    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, September 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Phillies try to bounce the Nationals, the Rays take on the Yankees, and the Mariners and Angels do battle in Los Angeles.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Phillies will try to remain unbeaten in Pedro Martinez's trips to the mound on Tuesday afternoon when they play in Washington against the Nationals and John Lannan (8-10, 4.09 ERA). Martinez (3-0, 3.52 ERA) is coming off a strong outing against the Giants in which he gave up one run over seven innings of work; Philadelphia is 5-0 in the righthander's five starts. Lefthander Lannan was knocked around by the Padres last time out, allowing five runs over five innings.

Also on the National League schedule for Tuesday: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Florida at the Mets, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Atlanta at Houston, Cincinnati at Colorado, the Dodgers at Arizona, and San Diego at San Francisco. Kevin Correia (10-10, 4.29 ERA) will take on Giants ace Tim Lincecum (13-5, 2.34 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Correia has won each of his last two starts, while righthander Lincecum has two losses in his past three mound trips.

Over in the American League the Rays and Yankees will continue their series in New York on Tuesday night, with David Price (7-7, 4.75 ERA) taking on Chad Gaudin (1-0, 4.08 ERA). Lefthander Price will be looking to bounce back from a loss to the Red Sox in which he surrendered four runs on six hits over just 5 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Gaudin went just 3 2-3 innings in his start against the Blue Jays last time out, allowing three earned runs on four hits in that game.

Rounding out Tuesday's AL slate: Texas at Cleveland, Minnesota at Toronto, Baltimore at Boston, Detroit at Kansas City, Oakland at the White Sox, and Seattle at the Angels. Felix Hernandez (14-5, 2.65 ERA) will be looking to pitch the Mariners to a road win in that last contest; righthander Hernandez blanked the Angels over eight innings last time out. Lefthander Scott Kazmir (8-8, 5.68 ERA) took the loss vs. Hernandez that day, giving up two runs over 6 1-3 innings.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

As well, there are a pair of WNBA games on tap for Tuesday, with Indiana at New York and San Antonio at Los Angeles as the league enters its final week of regular-season action. The Silver Stars (14-17 straight-up, 13-18 against-the-spread) will be looking to pick up their fourth straight win and move into a tie with the Sparks (15-16 SU, 15-16 ATS) for third place in the West standings. Los Angeles was beaten 89-72 in San Antonio when those teams met on Saturday.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, September 8

      For starters, it's Stafford

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Monday that top overall draft pick Matthew Stafford will be his starting quarterback in the season opener at New Orleans on Sunday. The Lions have been 13-point underdogs for some time, and Schwartz's announcement saw the line move a half-point in opposite directions at some books.

The Saints allowed just 38 points in four preseason games and plan on starting defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant, unless the NFL steps in and upholds their four-game suspensions for banned substances.

      How low can you go?

The under is 8-2-1 in Felix Hernandez's last 11 road starts. The under also has paid in Scott Kazmir's last three starts. The pitchers are facing each other for the second straight time and put together an under in their last meeting, when the total was 7.5 in Seattle. This time, the total is 8.0 in Anaheim.

      The real Homer Bailey

In his last start, Reds lefthander Matt Maloney returned from a stint in the minor leagues to show that not much has changed when it comes to his inability to keep the ball in the park. Maloney allowed two homers in three straight starts before being sent down and gave up two homers vs. the Dodgers on Aug. 29.

Maloney and the Reds are +216 vs. the Rockies at Coors Field, which is first in run rate and 13th in homer rate among all ballparks this season.

      Can Clijsters lose? Na

Kim Clijsters is coming off a victory over Venus Williams and is favored to win her quarterfinal match against Na Li. But the players have not faced each other since 2007, when they split a pair of matches on hard courts that each went three sets. Clijsters is +200 to win in three sets, while Li is +550 to advance in three sets.

      Ricky, Don't Abuse That Number

Blue Jays rookie lefthander Ricky Romero has been better than almost anyone could have expected, going 11-7 with a 4.15 ERA to boost an injury-ravaged rotation. But he is up to 155 innings in both the minor and major leagues and is showing signs of fatigue.

Romero pitched just 93 innings due to shoulder and elbow problems in 2007 and tossed a career-high 164 innings last year. In his last five starts, he has failed to last six innings three times while giving 21 runs (18 earned) and 18 walks in 25 1-3 innings. Toronto is -108 vs. Minnesota.

      Notable Quotable

"It is more difficult to plan for two (quarterbacks) than it is to plan for one. I'm not saying that's going to be the difference or not the difference, but I know that there is time allotted to that and you can't put the same amount of time into focusing on one player."

-- Browns coach Eric Mangini, who has yet to name a starting quarterback six days before the season opener vs. the Vikings. Cleveland is +4 at most books, but some have moved the line to +4.5 in the last 24 hours.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

Six ACC teams that lost non-conference games this weekend

-- Duke-- Had punt blocked for TD in loss to I-AA Richmond

-- Maryland-- Got butts kicked by very good Cal team, 52-13

-- NC State-- Lost 7-3 to South Carolina-- game was tough to watch

-- Virginia-- Al Groh in trouble after losing to I-AA William & Mary

-- Virginia Tech-- Outgained 498-155 in neutral field loss to Alabama

-- Wake Forest-- Lost at home to improved Baylor squad, 24-21

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.............

        13) Fine weekend of college football ended when Miami held on for dear life and upset Florida State 38-34, when Seminoles' pass into end zone feel incomplete as the game ended. Excellent game, but one where I got the feeling when it was over that the better team had lost.

        12) Whoever was keeping the clock with 0:23 left, if I played golf with him, I'd make sure I kept score. Clock started 0:05 late on that play.

        11) Freshman kicker drilled 52,45-yard field goals for Seminoles, but he looked horrible on extra points, duck-hooking one to left, banking one in off an upright. The missed PAT was big-- FSU could have kicked tying field goal on the last play, although there were lot of very tired players on both sides when game ended, so maybe it was for the best.

        10) Horrible day for Rutgers, which was picked to win Big East, then got pummeled 47-15 at home by Cincinnati team that had just one returning starter on defense. Pike kid that plays QB for Bearcats looked like Dan Fouts- he never played QB until he was a junior in HS. Very impressive.

Elsewhere in the world of sports.........
        9) Thought Bob Greise had been demoted to Cincinnati-Rutgers game, then I realize its his son Brian, who sounds exactly like dad. Not a bad debut for the recently-retired NFL QB-- he was pretty good on TV.

        8) In the last six NFL drafts, Raiders haven't drafted lower than 7th, so now you know why Patriots were happy to deal Richard Seymour out west for a first-round pick in 2011. Most figure the deal is a steal.

        7) Would it kill the Browns to name a starting QB? I mean, are the two choices so different that its going to screw the Vikings up if they don't know who's playing until Sunday? Why does everyone who worked for Bill Belichick act like football is a freakin' spy novel?

        6) I was surprised to learn that John Paul Wilson (former Alabama Qb) made the Falcons' roster at DJ Shockley's expense, a move that wasn't necessarily too popular with some Falcon players. Shockley was put on the Atlanta practice squad, for what thats worth.

        5) This is first time ever no American man made quarterfinals of the US Open tennis tournament. This isn't good, but not nearly as distressing as Maria Sharapova losing the other day, but now I'm rambling.......

        4) Michael Jordan gets inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame Friday; he did a very cool thing and chose his boyhood idol, David Thompson, to introduce him at the ceremony. For those of you too young to have seen Thompson play, he was "Jordan before Jordan", a great leaper who led North Carolina State to the 1974 national title. Classy move by MJ.

        3) Sometime in January, I'll probably post a pick or two on Long Beach State to win a college basketball game; why do I know this already? In November/December, the 49ers are playing West Virginia, Notre Dame, Texas, Kentucky and Duke-- they're going to be a battle-tested team.

        2) Pittsburgh Pirates clinched their 17th losing season in a row Monday, all-time record for futility in pro sports. I'd say congratulations, but....

        1) David Letterman makes $32M a year? Simon Cowell makes $36M a year? Ryan Seacrest $15M? And they say athletes are overpaid........

          SCOREBOARD

          Tuesday, September 8

Cincinnati at Colorado (8:40 p.m. EDT). The NL wild card-leading Rockies get to face Matt Maloney (0-3), who will be called up from Double-A to start at Coors Field.

          STARS

          Monday

          - Juan Uribe, Giants, homered twice, tripled and drove in five runs in San Francisco's 9-4 victory over San Diego.

          - Chris Carpenter, Cardinals, pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 to lead St. Louis to a 3-0 victory at Milwaukee.

          - Billy Butler, Royals, homered twice and had four RBIs in Kansas City's 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

          - Mark Teixeira, Yankees, had three hits, including two homers, and drove in four runs in New York's 11-1 win over Tampa Bay in the second game of a day-night doubleheader. The Yankees also won the opener 4-1.

          - Derek Lee, Cubs, homered twice and had three RBIs to carry Chicago to a 4-2 victory at Pittsburgh.

          - Joe Mauer, Twins, had three hits and keyed a five-run first inning for Minnesota in a 6-3 victory at Toronto.

          - Manny Ramirez, Ronny Belliard and James Loney, Dodgers, all hit solo homers to give Los Angeles a 7-2 victory at Arizona.

          - Hunter Pence, Astros, homered and drove in three runs in Houston's 4-3 win over Philadelphia.

          DUBIOUS RECORD

The Pittsburgh Pirates were assured of a record-breaking 17th straight losing season, falling to the Chicago Cubs 4-2 Monday. By losing their 10th in 11 games, the Pirates dropped to 54-82 and will finish below .500, just as they have every season since 1993. The string of losing seasons - which followed the Pirates' three consecutive NL East titles from 1990-92 - is the longest for any team in the four major North American pro team sports. Only the Phillies (1933-48) have had as many as 16 losing seasons in a row.

          STILL 3 HITS AWAY

Derek Jeter went 0 for 8 with a walk in the Yankees' 4-1 and 11-1 doubleheader sweep of Tampa Bay on Monday, remaining at 2,718 career hits - three behind Lou Gehrig for the franchise record.

          A WIN FOR BUEHRLE

Mark Buehrle outpitched Boston's Josh Beckett, limiting the Red Sox to one run and eight hits in seven-plus innings in the Chicago White Sox's 5-1 victory on Monday. Buehrle (12-7) won for the first time since pitching a perfect game on July 23, going 0-4 with a 5.44 ERA in eight starts since. Beckett (14-6), who hasn't won since Aug. 12, gave up three runs and six hits over seven innings.

          SNAPPED

Kansas City's 6-3 win over Los Angeles on Monday snapped the Royals' nine-game losing streak against the Angels. ... The Twins' 6-3 win over the Blue Jays ended their seven-game losing skid in Toronto. ... Colorado's 4-3 win over Cincinnati snapped the Reds' seven-game winning streak.

          SLUMP

Alex Rios went 0 for 3 in the White Sox's 5-1 win over Boston on Monday, extending his slump to 4 for 49.

          OUCH!

Tampa Bay slugger Carlos Pena broke two fingers when he was hit by a pitch from CC Sabathia in the opener of Monday's day-night doubleheader against the Yankees. Pena was hurt on an 0-1 offering in the first inning of a 4-1 loss, with the ball hitting his left hand and then his bat. Pena broke the middle and index fingers. He was to return to Florida on Tuesday and meet with the Rays medical staff before a determination is made whether he needs surgery.

          ANOTHER SHOT

Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton has received a second shot for the pinched nerve in his back, and is not expected to return until at least next weekend. Hamilton was back in Texas, where he had another injection Monday while the Rangers opened a three-game series in Cleveland. Hamilton will wait for the Rangers to come home for the start of a nine-game homestand Friday.

          SURGERY

Cleveland All-Star outfielder Grady Sizemore has been scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow at the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday. Team physician Dr. Mark Schickendantz will perform the operation. Sizemore also needs to undergo lower abdominal surgery, but no timetable has been set for that procedure. Sizemore, who had missed only nine games over the previous four seasons, played with pain all season until being shut down Friday.

          SPEAKING

"I knew when the ball hit me it was going to be bad. You don't take a 95 mph fastball on the finger and live to tell about it - or the finger live to tell about it.'' - Tampa Bay slugger Carlos Pena after breaking two fingers when he was hit by a pitch from CC Sabathia in the first inning of a 4-1 loss to the Yankees in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

1998 - Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris' 37-year-old home run record, lining historic No. 62 just over the wall in left field with two outs in the fourth inning. McGwire's shot off the Chicago Cubs' Steve Trachsel set off a wild celebration in Busch Stadium.

2002 - The Atlanta Braves won their 11th straight division title when second-place Philadelphia lost to the New York Mets 6-4.

2007 - Alex Rodriguez homered in consecutive at-bats to set a single-season record for a third baseman with 51 homers, helping the New York Yankees overpower Kansas City 11-5. He became the first Yankees player to reach 50 homers in a season since Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle did it in 1961.

2008 - Pinch-hitting Mark Saccomanno homered on the first pitch he saw in the major leagues to help Houston beat Pittsburgh. Saccomanno hit a solo shot in the fifth inning.

Today's birthdays: Bobby Parnell 25; Nick Hundley 26; Gil Meche 31

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (+120, 9)

Brewers righthander Manny Parra has struggled with consistency and control all season. But for some reason, he seems to put it all together against the Cardinals.

In four starts against the NL Central leaders, Parra is 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA - more than four earned runs lower than his season mark. He has allowed just one homer in 26 innings vs. the Cardinals compared to one every 5.7 innings against everyone else.

In his last start at St. Louis, Parra stopped the Cardinals on two runs and five hits over 6 1-3 innings of a 4-3 win.

The Brewers have been held under three runs in their last four games, their longest such stretch of the season.

                  Pick: Milwaukee

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants (-260, 6.5)

In Giants righthander Tim Lincecum's last 10 starts, the total has been 7.0 or less seven times and has never been higher than 8.0.

Although the under window appears to be virtually closed when the Cy Young candidate takes the hill, the total still has come in under eight times in that span.

Lincecum is 3-3 with a 2.97 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 72 2-3 innings during that span. He has had better 10-start stretches this season, but at no time has he pitched more effectively against the total, nor have the totals been consistently as low.

Lincecum's mound foe is Kevin Correia, who pitched 7 2-3 scoreless innings in his last start and is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts this season against his former team.

The teams have played under the total in six of their last eight meetings.

                  Pick: Under

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Pedro Martinez (3-0, 3.52 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies expected a lift when they signed the veteran righthander, but no one in the organization could have imagined a spotless record after five starts.

Philadelphia has won all five games started by Martinez, who has had two abbreviated outings but appears to be getting stronger. He allowed one run and five hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings in his last start, outdueling Tim Lincecum.

"You can see that he knows what he's doing and he's not just winging it up there hoping that he's getting outs," Lincecum told the Phillies' web site. "He's pitching with a purpose. He knows how to get guys out."

Martinez has 23 strikeouts and just three walks in 23 innings.

Brian Duensing (2-1, 3.81), Minnesota Twins

The Twins might have a better chance of catching the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central if they had showed more patience with their rookie lefthander as a starter, which has been his role since entering the organization in 2005.

Called up for good in early July, Duensing did mop-up relief work before being given a start July 29. He allowed two homers in five innings and was sent back to the pen, where he again was ineffective.

In 30 1-3 innings as a reliever, Duensing had 20 strikeouts, 16 walks and three homers allowed.

Duensing got another start Aug. 22 and has stayed in the rotation. In three starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. In 19 innings, he has 18 strikeouts, four walks and no homers allowed.

                    Returning

Bruce Chen (1-6, 5.24), Kansas City Royals

The veteran lefthander won his first game in nearly four years on Aug. 6, then was bumped from the rotation when Gil Meche returned from back spasms.

Chen has made five relief appearances since, allowing at least a run in each but stretching out to work four innings with 70 pitches on Sept. 2.

After pitching just 10 total innings in 2007 and 2008 due to arm problems, Chen is 1-6 with a 5.40 ERA as a starter this season, allowing opposing hitters to hit .304.

                    Slumping

Rick VandenHurk (2-2, 4.91), Florida Marlins

The 6-5 righthander has alternated good and bad starts in his last four outings and is due for a bad one.

On Aug. 5 at Washington, he gave up three homers and five earned runs in four innings. On Aug. 16 vs. Colorado, he surrendered three homers and six earned runs.

since returning in late July from elbow surgery, VandenHurk has been ripped for nine homers in just 36 2-3 innings.

Billy Buckner (2-6, 8.29), Arizona Diamondbacks

The righthander's last start marked his return from a mid-season demotion, but he picked up where he left off, losing his fifth straight outing.

During that stretch, Buckner has an 11.09 ERA, a 2.01 WHIP and has given up seven homers in 24 1-3 innings, including at least one in each start.

Indiana Fever at New York Liberty (-2.5, 141.5)

Over the last two years, this series has been very one-sided, both straight up and against the spread.

The Fever have won eight of the last nine meetings. They have covered the number in all of the wins, including four games where they were giving at least 6.5 points.

The only time Indiana has not covered against New York was a 102-96 road loss in triple OT on June 26, 2008. As a three-point underdog, it ran out of gas and did not score in the final two minutes.

The Fever has won the last four meetings, holding the Liberty to less than 60 points in three of them.

                              Pick: Indiana

San Antonio Silver Stars at Los Angeles Sparks (-5.5, 148)

The Silver Stars (13-17) have won three straight games - including an 89-72 thumping of the Sparks on Saturday - to get within one game of Los Angeles (14-16) for third place in the Western Conference.

But those wins were at home. The Silver Stars are a much different team on the road, where they have lost four in a row straight up and against the spread, allowing an average of 91 points.

In two home-and-home sets where the Silver Stars have won the first game, they have lost the second game by a combined 23 points.

In two home-and-home series where the Sparks have lost the first game, they have bounced back to win the second game by an average of 22 points.

                              Pick: Los Angeles
