    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, September 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays and Yankees play a doubleheader in New York, and the Seminoles begin their season with a game against Miami.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football finishes off their first week of action on Monday with a pair of games: Cincinnati at Rutgers, and Miami at No. 18 Florida State. The Scarlet Knights are pegged as 5-point favorites in the Big East matchup, with the total sitting at 48.5 points. Meanwhile, the ranked Seminoles are listed as 6-point home favorites against the Hurricanes. The total for that game sits at 47.5 points.

As well, the Canadian Football League has a pair of Labour Day contests on tap, with Toronto at Hamilton and Edmonton at Calgary. The Tiger-Cats (4-4 straight-up, 6-2 against-the-spread) are 5.5-point home favorites against the rival Argonauts (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) on Monday. Meanwhile, the Stampeders (4-4 SU, 2-6 ATS) sit as 5.5-point home favorites against the Eskimos (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS).

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Rays will use Matt Garza (7-9, 4.01 ERA) and Andy Sonnanstine (6-8, 6.62 ERA) in Monday's road doubleheader, while the Yankees go with A.J. Burnett (10-8, 4.29 ERA) and CC Sabathia (16-7, 3.48 ERA). Lefthander Sabathia has been on a roll for the Yankees, leading the team to victories in each of his last seven trips to the mound. However, Sabathia's last loss came against the Rays back on July 28, when he allowed five earned runs over his 5 2-3 innings pitched.

Rounding out the American League schedule for Monday: Minnesota at Toronto, the Angels at Kansas City, Texas at Cleveland, and Boston at the White Sox. Josh Beckett (14-5, 3.87 ERA) gets the ball for the BoSox in that last contest; righthander Beckett is 0-1 with three no-decisions over his last four trips to the mound (24 earned runs in 24 1-3 innings). The ChiSox counter with Mark Buehrle (11-7, 3.86 ERA); Buehrle remains winless since his July perfect game.

Over in the National League it'll be J.A. Happ (10-4, 2.77 ERA) vs. Brian Moehler (8-10, 5.11 ERA) on Monday afternoon as the Phillies play the Astros in Houston. Lefthander Happ is coming off consecutive losses to the Giants and Pirates, allowing seven earned runs over those 14 innings of work. Righthander Moehler took a hard-luck loss against the Cubs in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering just a single earned run on six hits over 5 1-3 innings in that game.

Elsewhere around the NL on Monday it's the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati at Colorado, the Dodgers at Arizona, San Diego at San Francisco, and St. Louis at Milwaukee. Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter (15-3, 2.28 ERA) will try to pick up his 16th victory of the season in that last contest; righthander Carpenter is 8-0 with two no-decisions over his last 10 outings. Dave Bush (3-6, 6.47 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Brewers; righthander Bush has been bothered by a sore arm lately.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's wagering tips

      Monday, September 7

See a penny, pick it up

The Red Sox dumped Brad Penny for his ineffectiveness, but most of that was against American League clubs. In four starts against NL teams this season, Penny is 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He pitched eight scoreless innings in his debut with the Giants, who are -168 against San Diego.

      Monday night football, Florida style

The annual rivalry game between Miami and Florida State could be decided by a pair of maligned units that will be going head-to-head. Miami's secondary will be without starter Vaughn Telemaque and senior reserve cornerback Ryan Hill, both of whom have shoulder injuries. The shorthanded group will try to match up with Florida State's speedy receivers, many of whom have seen limited playing time due to suspensions.

The Seminoles are giving 6.5 points and the total is 46.5. In three season openers between the schools from 2004-06, the teams never combined for more than 26 points, and the winning margin never was more than six points.

      Opening remarks

Novak Djokovic may have a 3-1 lifetime record vs. Radek Stepanek, but the players have split their only two meetings on hard courts, with both going the distance and four of the eight sets requiring tiebreakers. Djokovic needed five sets to get past Stepanek at the U.S. Open in 2007 and lost in three sets at Rotterdam in 2006. Djokovic is favored but is +225 to win in four sets and +500 to win in five.

Scarlet Knights keeping bettors in the dark

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano must have attended the Eric Mangini School of Naming Your Starting Quarterback. With less than 24 hours until the season opener vs. Cincinnati, Schiano still has not decided whether fifth-year senior Dom Natale or running threat Jabu Lovelace will get the call.

It may not matter; the Bearcats have a new defensive coordinator and 10 new starters, although none will be freshmen. Host Rutgers is -4.5 with a total of 47.

      Re-enter Sandman

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who has not pitched since Sept. 1 due to a recurring groin injury, pronounced himself fit to return prior to Sunday's game at Toronto. The Yankees took a 14-8 pounding, so there was no need to use him.

The Yankees have a day-night doubleheader vs. Tampa Bay on Monday. Rivera, who is 38-of-39 in save opportunities, could pitch in both games. The Yankees are -185 in the opener and -230 in the nightcap.

      Three to get ready

The final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship - the only PGA Tour event with a closing round scheduled for a Monday - will begin with Steve Stricker, Retief Goosen and Sean o'Hair tied for the lead. Stricker, who won the John Deere in July and tied for second at last week's Barclays Championship, is the top choice at +300.

Goosen, who won the Transitions Championship in March and lost a playoff at the Canadian Open in July, is +400. O'Hair, who won the Quail Hollow Championship in July but has been no better than 65th in his last five events, is +500.

The second choice at +350 is Padraig Harrington, who is one shot off the lead alongside Kevin Na and Scott Verplank. Harrington tied for second at Bridgestone and the Barclays in the last month. However, he had poor final rounds at the Bridgestone and the PGA Championship, where he tied for 10th.

      Long tosses

White Sox lefthander Mark Buehrle is winless in eight starts since his perfect game. The White Sox are +115 vs. Boston. ... Yankees righthander A.J. Burnett is winless in his last seven outings. New York is -230 vs. Tampa Bay. ... Cardinals righthander Chris Carpenter is 10-0 in his last 12 starts. St. Louis lost his two no-decisions in that stretch. The Cards are -230 at Milwaukee. ... In the last 11 starts made by Vicente Padilla, the total has been under 10 times. The total is 9.0 for the Dodgers-Diamondbacks matchup.

      Notable Quotable

"When she's playing like this, I don't think there's anybody that can beat her. ... She's been able to always focus so well on the slams. You don't see her playing like this in a normal tournament that often. When (a grand slam) comes, it brings the best out of her."

-- 22nd seed Daniela Hantuchova, after receiving a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing from defending chmapion Serena Williams in a fourth-round match at the U.S. Open. Williams is tracking her 12th grand slam title.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- Colorado's Seth Smith went nuts against Arizona this week, hitting three HRs with nine RBI-- he was 9-13 in the three-game series.

-- Brewers pulled off their first triple play in 10 years and got walkoff homer from Prince Fielder as they beat the Giants 2-1 in 12 innings.

-- Phillies are 51-15 this season when Jimmy Rollins scores a run.

-- Reds were a perfect 7-0 this week, sweeping Pirates, Braves.

-- In their last 28 games, Rays' bullpen is 2-8 with eight blown saves.

-- Giants are 13-1 at home in one-run games, 5-19 on the road.

Monday's List of 13: Happy Labor Day, everyone..........

        13) First of all, a huge thanks to the three fellas who picked horses for me over the last six weeks-- Dennis Dapolito, Dan Taft, Craig MacNeal, who worked really hard and put a lot of thought into their work, trying to do the almost-impossible and pick winners of horse races almost 24 hours before they take place. They did better and provided more insight than a lot of guys in newspapers who get paid to do it.

        12) Clubhouse/grandstand admission for last day of the Saratoga meeting is free Monday-- too bad parking isn't free; costs more to park your car than it does to get in the damn clubhouse, twice as much, actually.

        11) Do the nitwits who make the baseball schedule realize Labor Day is a national holiday? Eight teams don't play on Monday.

        10) Carrier Dome in Syracuse is named for an air conditioning company, but the dome isn't air conditioned.

        9) Former Raider QB Todd Marinovich's little brother is a linebacker for the Orangemen-- he got mentioned a lot during the Minnesota game.

        8) NFL needs the rule where a defensive team that runs an INT back all the way during a 2-point conversion try gets the two points themselves. They have it in college and its a fun rule.

        7) Surprised to see a Virginia Tech player wearing #7 Saturday-- thought they retired Michael Vick's old number.

        6) Would have love to have known Landry Jones' pulse rate when he got into the game in place of injured Sam Bradford Saturday. Kid's heart had to be beating out of his chest-- he almost pulled off game-winning drive, but Oklahoma fell about 10 yards short of field goal range.

        5) Some good QBs are out on the street, AJ Feeley, Jeff Garcia-- some NFL teams are going with two QBs, figuring if you're down to your #3 guy, its probably curtains anyway. Then there are the Jets, who look to be keeping four QBs, for some unknown reason. Then again, they got suckered into giving up a 3rd-round pick for Brett Favre last season, so nothing they do is really that surprising.

        4) Jets have former Patriot QB O'Connell, Redskins have former Giant backup Woodson-- you wonder if they're just picking the brain of former division rivals, or are they really interested in that player?

        3) Hard to believe that Carl Crawford doesn't have a bunt hit this year; guy is lefty, runs like the wind, but never learned to bunt the right way. As they pointed out in Bull Durham, you add one hit a week to a batting average, and thats fifty points over the course of a season.

        2) Listening to Mets games this season, the reverent way they talk about Alex Cora, there's no doubt he'll be a big league manager someday.

        1) When I was a kid, I hated Labor Day, because it meant one and only one thing-- school was starting in 2-3 days. Now I laugh at little people trudging back to classrooms, and I'm glad when it is Labor Day, because that means football season is here, and I love football season.

          SCOREBOARD

          Monday, September 7

Tampa Bay at New York Yankees (7:05 p.m. EDT). CC Sabathia (16-7, 3.48 ERA) tries to become the American League's first 17-game winner in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

          STARS

          Sunday

-Brandon Inge, Tigers, hit a grand slam with one out in the ninth inning that rallied Detroit over Tampa Bay 5-3. He had struck out in each of his first three at-bats.

-Chris Young, Diamondbacks, hit three home runs in Arizona's 13-5 loss to Colorado. He began the game at Coors Field with only seven homers in 340 at-bats this season.

-Seth Smith, Rockies, homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs to lead Colorado over Arizona 13-5.

-Prince Fielder, Brewers, hit a game-ending home run in the 12th inning to lift Milwaukee past San Francisco 2-1. Earlier, the slugging first baseman caught a relay to complete Milwaukee's first triple play in 10 years.

-Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth that lifted Washington past Florida 5-4.

-Garrett Jones, Pirates, hit an RBI single to cap a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth against St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin to lead Pittsburgh to a 6-5 win. The Pirates ended a nine-game skid.

-Jon Lester, Red Sox, pitched seven shutout innings and struck out eight in Boston's 6-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. He became the 10th different Boston pitcher to fan 200 in a season.

-Scott Hairston, Athletics, hit a grand slam in the seventh inning that sent Oakland over Seattle 5-2.

-Kevin Kouzmanoff and Adrian Gonzalez, Padres. Kouzmanoff had a run-scoring grounder in the first and a two-run single in the third, and Gonzalez hit a solo homer in the fifth to help San Diego beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3.

          SWINGING

Ichiro Suzuki got his 2,000th hit in the majors Sunday. He became the second-fastest player to reach the mark, doing it in 1,402 games; Al Simmons did it in 1,390. The 35-year-old Suzuki also got 1,278 hits while playing in Japan.

          SCARY

In a season filled with beanings, Toronto rookie Randy Ruiz and Reds reliever Micah Owings were hit in the head by pitches Sunday. Ruiz was struck in the cheek by the Yankees' Josh Towers and was able to walk away without assistance. Owings was hit in the helmet by Atlanta's Kenshin Kawakami and expects to be OK.

          SLUGGING PAIR

Evan Longoria hit his 28th home run for Tampa Bay on Sunday. The 2008 AL Rookie of the Year joined teammate Carlos Pena in reaching 100 RBIs, marking the first time two Tampa Bay players hit the mark in the same year.

          SPECTACULAR

Cubs shortstop Andres Blanco turned in a terrific play against the Mets on Sunday, diving to stop Jeff Francoeur's grounder up the middle and throwing to first from the seat of his pants as he rolled over on the outfield grass. "That's as good a play as I've ever seen made at the major league level,'' Cubs manager Lou Piniella said.

          SLUMPS

Alex Rios struck out three times for the White Sox on Sunday, leaving him in a 4-for-46 rut. ... Kansas City's Luke Hochevar, the first pick in the 2006 draft, is 0-6 with an 8.12 ERA in eight starts since a July 25 victory over Texas.

          SLOPPY

The Yankees, with the best record in the majors, made a season-high four errors Sunday in a 14-8 loss at Toronto. The infield was especially shoddy - first baseman Mark Teixeira misplayed a grounder at first, and third baseman Jerry Hairston Jr., second baseman Robinson Cano and backup shortstop Ramiro Pena all made throwing errors.

          ON THE MEND

Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran went 1 for 5 and struck out three times for Class A Brooklyn. Out 2 1/2 months because of a knee injury, he said he was ready to rejoin New York on Tuesday. ... Minnesota lefty Francisco Liriano (arm fatigue) threw in the bullpen. He is scheduled to pitch a simulated game Tuesday in Toronto and may be activated Thursday.

          SPEAKING

"When I was spitting blood, I thought I probably broke my nose. After a while, when I looked in the mirror, I thought, 'Ah, my face is swollen. I'm fine now.' Nothing growing up in New York City that I haven't experienced.'' - Toronto rookie Randy Ruiz, who walked away without assistance after being hit in the face by a pitch Sunday.

          SEASONS

          Sept. 7

1908 - Walter Johnson pitched his third consecutive shutout in four days with a 4-0, two-hit victory over the New York Highlanders.

1911 - Rookie Grover Cleveland Alexander of the Philadelphia Phillies took a 1-0 thriller from 44-year-old Cy Young, who was closing out his career with the Boston Braves.

1916 - The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-1 to start their 26-game winning streak, a major league record.

1923 - Howard Ehmke of the Boston Red Sox tossed a 4-0, no-hit victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Philadelphia's Slim Harriss hit a ball to the wall for a double, but was called out for missing first base, preserving the no-hitter.

1962 - Maury Wills of Los Angeles stole four bases and set a National League record with a total of 82 for the season. The Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the Mets struck out Ron Cey of the Chicago Cubs in the second inning for No. 228 to set a National League record for a rookie. Gooden passed Grover Cleveland Alexander, who set the mark with 227 in 1911. New York coasted to a 10-0 victory behind Gooden's one-hitter.

1993 - Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals had the greatest game at the plate in major league history in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Cincinnati. In the 15-2 win, Whiten hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs to become the only player to accomplish both feats in one game.

1998 - Ken Griffey Jr. homered twice against Baltimore, giving baseball three 50-homer players in a season for the first time. Griffey joined Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth as the only players to hit 50 or more in consecutive seasons. Ruth did it in 1920-21 and 1927-28, and McGwire hit 50 or more the last three years.

2001 - Alex Rodriguez broke his own American League record for homers by a shortstop with his career-best 43rd as Texas beat Kansas City 8-2.

2007 - Curtis Granderson hit his 20th home run in Detroit's 6-1 win over Seattle, making him only the sixth major league player since 1900 with at least 20 home runs, 20 doubles and 20 triples in one season.

2007 - Colorado used nine relievers after starter Elmer Dessens left with a strained left hamstring in the third inning of a 10-4 win over San Diego. The 10 total pitchers was a National League record for a nine-inning game.

Today's birthdays: Brian Stokes 30; Jason Isringhausen 37

            This Day in Baseball

On September 7 in Baseball History...

1889 - The most controversial game in American Association history is held in Brooklyn. The St. Louis Browns hold a 4-2 lead in the ninth over the Bridegrooms and claim it is too dark to continue. The lighted candles in front of their bench make umpire Fred Goldsmith determined to finish the game no matter what. Several St. Louis players are hit with bottles as they leave the grounds. The Browns will forfeit the game the next day because they fear for their safety.

1908 - Walter Johnson pitched his third consecutive shutout in four days, a 4-0, two-hitter over the New York Highlanders.

1911 - Rookie Grover Alexander of the Philadelphia Phillies beat 44-year-old Cy Young 1-0, as Young ended his career with the Boston Braves.

1912 - Eddie Collins steals six bases in the Athletics' 9-7 win over Detroit, a 20th-century-record. Remarkably, on September 22, he will repeat with six against the Browns.

1916 - The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-1 to start their 26-game winning streak, a Major League record.

1918 - On one day's rest, Hippo Vaughn gives up only seven hits, but Carl Mays wins a 2-1 duel for the Red Sox. Game Three of the World Series ends with the Charlie Pick of the Cubs caught in a rundown between third base and home while trying to score on a passed ball.

1945 - Joe Kuhel hits an inside-the-park home run, the only homer hit by a Senator all season at Washington's Griffith Stadium. The Nats hit twenty-six on the road.

1952 - Johnny Mize hits a pinch-hit grand slam to give the Yanks a 5-1 win at Washington. He has now homered in each one of the fifteen Major League parks, including Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, while in each league.

1953 - Roy Campanella sets the Major League record for RBI by a catcher when he smacks a three-run home run in a 6-3 Dodgers win over the Phils. Campy's 125 breaks Yogi Berra's Major League record of 124 set in 1950, and he will finish the season with 142. Yesterday Roy broke Gabby Hartnett's record for home runs by a catcher in a season with his 38th.

1955 - Whitey Ford continues his mastery with his second consecutive one-hitter, beating the A's 2-1. Jim Finigan hits a two-out single in the seventh for the Nats' only hit. The Yankees southpaw is the fifth Major League pitcher to throw consecutive one-hitters.

1962 - Maury Wills of Los Angeles stole four bases, setting a National League record with a total of 82 for the season. The Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1.

1970 - The White Sox use a Major League record 41 players in a doubleheader with Oakland, but lose both games, 7-4, and 7-5.

1975 - The Reds clinch the National League West flag with an 8-4 win over the Giants. It is the earliest clinching date in league history.

1978 - The Yankees, four games behind the Red Sox in the American League East, arrive in Boston for a crucial four-game series. The Yanks begin the "Boston Massacre" with a 15-3 rout.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets struck out Ron Cey of the Chicago Cubs in the second inning - his 228th of the season setting a National League record for a rookie. Gooden passed Grover Alexander, who set the mark with 227 in 1911. New York won 10-0 behind Gooden's one-hitter.

1993 - Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals had one of the greatest offensive games in Major League history in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Cincinnati. In the 15-2 win, Whiten hit four home runs and drove in twelve runs, becoming the only player ever to accomplish both feats in one game.

1998 - Ken Griffey, Jr. homered twice against Baltimore, giving baseball three 50-homer players in a season for the first time. Jr. joined Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth as the only players to hit fifty or more in consecutive seasons.

1998 - Mark McGwire, who had become the third player in history to reach 60 home runs, hits his record-tying 61st against Cubs pitcher Mike Morgan. McGwire's pursuer in the home run chase, Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa, applauds McGwire, as does the adoring sold-out crowd in St. Louis.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (-230, 10)

                  The Rays are done.

Tampa Bay arrives at Yankee Stadium having lost four in a row, including Sunday's 5-3 setback to Detroit where it used five relievers in a four-run ninth and wasted a sparkling major league debut by Wade Davis. It was the second straight game in which Tampa Bay blew a late lead.

"When you have leads and when you can't hold leads late, that's the part of the game that's most difficult to endure," manager Joe Maddon told the team's web site.

The Rays are 6 1-2 games behind Boston for the American league wild card - seven in the loss column - and begin a stretch of 11 games on the road, where they are just 29-38 this season.

Matt Garza starts the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader. His current stretch of seven starts without a win began with a loss to the Yankees on July 29.

                  Pick: New York

Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies (-250, 9.5)

It doesn't matter where Ubaldo Jimenez pitches, or whom he faces. He knows how to keep the score down.

One of the better pitchers in the National League this season, Jimenez has made seven consecutive starts in which the total was under.

In his last seven starts - four on the road and three at home - Jimenez is 6-1. He has worked at least 6 2-3 innings and allowed no more than two runs in each of those outings, while the total has not climbed above eight.

Jimenez hasn't exactly been matched up with aces, either. Some of the guys he has faced were Tim Redding, Craig Stammen, Kevin Hart and Sean Marshall.

He also has made two starts against San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum, with the totals coming in below 8.0 in the first matchup and under 6.5 in the second meeting.

                  Pick: Under

                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

CC Sabathia (16-7, 3.48 ERA), New York Yankees

CC Sabathia is showing Yankees fans why he was worth the millions of dollars New York paid to get him. The Yanks are 9-1 in the big lefty’s last 10 starts, including last week’s 10-2 'W' over the Orioles.

“I’ve been saying it for a long time, I’ll take a World Series trophy over a Cy Young any day,” Sabathia told Newday after allowing one run and striking out nine against the Orioles. “That’s my goal, to win a World Series.”

If you think the price is too steep to back the Yanks Monday, consider the runline. The Bronx Bombers have covered the number in seven straight Sabathia starts.

Brian Moehler (8-10, 5.11), Houston Astros

Value hunters pay attention to this journeyman righty. The 37-year-old big league vet has strung together three consecutive impressive starts for the Astros. Although he came up on the losing end of Tuesday’s 4-1 setback to the Cubs, Moehler gave his club a good chance for the win.

“I thought [Moehler] deserved a better fate,” Houston manager Cecil Cooper told the club’s web site. “I thought he threw the ball well, hit his spots well and moved the ball around. He did a good job.”

The Astros are still 2-1 in Moehler’s last three appearances. The under is 4-0 in his last four trips to the mound.

                    Slumping

Josh Beckett (14-5, 3.87), Boston Red Sox

We took some slack for not including Beckett in the slumping section in his last start and the criticism was validated soon afterwards.

The former World Series MVP went six innings and struck out nine without issuing a walk, but the long ball was the big story again. Beckett was tagged for four earned runs along with two solo bombs.

It marked the fifth straight start that the righty allowed multiple homers. Opposing batters have taken Beckett out of the park 14 times over his last 26 1-3 innings pitched.

“He’s not hurt. He’s not throwing 79 mph,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters a little over a week ago. “He’s had a couple of outings that aren’t up to his standards.”

Betting against the Sox with Beckett on the bump is still risky (Boston is 3-2 in his last five starts). If you’re looking for a more reliable bet, as far as trends are concerned, take a peek at the total. The over is 5-0 in Beckett’s last five outings.

Scott Richmond (6-8, 4.61), Toronto Blue Jays

If you are looking for a possible parlay pitcher, the young righthander may fit the bill.

In his last six starts, Richmond is 0-4 with a 6.81 ERA. He has 18 walks in that span, inflating his WHIP to 1.85.

And in his last five outings, the total has gone over, with a minimum of 10 runs scored in each game.

Dave Bush (3-6, 6.47), Milwaukee Brewers

The righthander is listed as questionable with a triceps injury. Questionable is also a good word to describe his recent performances.

Bush was sidelined nearly two months with arm woes before returning late last month. He has lost both his starts, allowing 13 runs, 15 hits and five walks in eight innings. That's a staggering 2 1-2 baserunners per inning.

Going back to before his injury, Bush is winless in his last seven starts, lasting more than five innings just once.

This is his second straight start against the Cardinals, who tattooed him for 11 hits and eight runs in 3 1-3 innings last time.

Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians [6:05 PM ET]

Rangers (-$1.60, O/U 9.5 under -$1.15) Minus All-Stars Michael Young and Josh Hamilton, the Rangers are having trouble scoring runs, going 15 straight innings without a run. Young has missed the past four games with a hamstring injury. Hamilton is dealing with a pinched nerve in his neck that he suffered on Tuesday. He was batting .359 during his last 30 games before suffering the injury. Texas is 20-8 in its last 28 games as a favorite. The Rangers have defeated the Indians in five of the last six meetings. Rangers starter Tommy Hunter has been a nice surprise going 7-3 with a 3.14 ERA. Hunter beat the Blue Jays at home last Wednesday in his previous start, 6-4, allowing four earned runs and five hits in seven innings. The right-hander was tagged for two home runs. Hunter has been better on the road with a 2-1 record and 2.20 ERA.

The Under is 37-15-2 in Texas’ last 54 road contests.
The Under is 42-19-4 in the Rangers’ last 65 games versus a right-hander.

Key Injuries - Michael Young (hamstring) is questionable.
                              Josh Hamilton (back) is doubtful.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Indians: Right-hander Carlos Carrasco is hoping for a much better result in his second big-league start. Carrasco was shelled in his major league debut on Tuesday at Detroit. The Tigers got to him for six earned runs on nine hits – including three homers – and drew three walks in just three innings. “My biggest problem was my fastball,” said Carrasco, a right-hander. “My other pitches were wrong, the slider and the change, just not the fastball.” Carrasco was 11-10 with a 4.64 ERA in Triple-A Columbus this season. The Indians obtained him from the Phillies in the Cliff Lee deal. Closer Kerry Wood has a 2.45 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings since the All-Star break. The Indians are without Grady Sizemore, who is scheduled for elbow surgery and won’t play again this season. The Indians have gone under the past five times hosting Texas.

The Under is 21-7-1 in the Indians’ last 29 home games.
The Under has cashed 7 of the past eight times the Indians have been a home ‘dog.

Key Injuries - Grady Sizemore (elbow and groin) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
