      Tips and Trends
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Padres: The Padres have been playing good ball, winning eight of their last 11. However, they are 2-11 in their last 13 meetings at Dodger Stadium. San Diego has been hitting well away from Petco Park batting above .300 in team batting average in its last 16 away contests. Right-handed starter Tim Stauffer has performed better than his 3-6 record. Stauffer has won his past two starts and has a 3.76 ERA on the season. The Padres have scored four or less runs for him in nine of his last 11 starts. Stauffer displayed good life on his fastball in his last outing, a 3-1 victory against Washington last Monday. Stauffer gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. It was the first time in a month Stauffer had worked past five innings. He has a 4.35 ERA in his last six road starts.

San Diego is 14-44 in its last 58 road games versus a team with a winning mark.
San Diego is 2-11 in its last 13 National League West games.

Key Injuries - Kyle Blanks (foot) is on the DL.

      PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-$2.10, O/U 8.5 under -$1.15): Los Angeles is 66-30 in its last 96 games as a home favorite. The Dodgers have gone over in nine of their last 12 home games versus the Padres. Los Angeles is 8-4 in its last 12 Sunday contests. Manny Ramirez is batting just .239 in his last 20 games after getting Saturday night off. Hiroki Kuroda (5-5, 4.08 ERA) says he is fine to make his first start since suffering a concussion after being hit in the head by a line drive at Arizona on Aug. 15. Kuroda allowed one unearned run in five innings of a minor league rehab start. Kuroda is 4-1 with a 2.97 ERA during his major league career in September. He is just 2-6 when pitching on Sunday, though. The under has cashed in 13 of the last 17 games when the Dodgers have faced a right-handed starter.

The Under is 19-8-2 in the Dodgers’ past 29 games.

Key Injuries - Casey Blake is day-to-day with tightness in his hamstring.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

        Six-pack for Sunday

-- Brad Lidge blew his 10th save Saturday, most on majors; no way should the Phillies have him as their closer in the playoffs next month.

-- Cardinals won in Pittsburgh with Pujols/Holliday both taking night off; Pujols got off the bench to win game with homer in the 10th.

-- Seth Smith is 7-9 last two nights, is now hitting .315 with an OB% of .403; how about letting the guy play every day?

-- Angels allowed eight runs total in their last six games.

-- Hasn't been a good year for the Reds, but they're 6-0 this week.

-- John Senden got a double eagle Saturday, third on Tour this year.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up first college pigskin Saturday

        13) From the Unmitigated Disasters department, we give you Sooners of Oklahoma, who not only lost as a 20-point favorite to BYU, but lost its QB, Heisman winner Sam Bradford, with a bad throwing shoulder. Now thats a very bad day.

        12) Sometime in next couple of years, some QB will leave school early whether he's ready or not, because of what happened to Bradford.

        11) Navy had a great shot at taking Ohio State to OT Saturday, but the tying 2-point play was a pass, not the normal Navy option, and when Buckeyes picked off the pass and ran it back for two points, they had avoided a shocking upset. Now USC visits Columbus next week.

        10) Teams that lost to I-AA teams this week: Temple-Duke-Virginia.

        9) Horrific week for ACC, as Duke/Virginia had their disasters, while Virginia Tech was losing to Alabama, NC State lost an awful game 7-3 to South Carolina Thursday, Wake Forest lost to Baylor, only Clemson beat a D-I team, beating Middle Tennessee 37-14. Miami-Florida State on Monday will close out a dismal week for the ACC.

        8) Most disappointing team of the week had to be Illinois, which lost to Missouri for fifth straight time, 37-9, despite Mizzou suffering so many losses to graduation, while Illini has a lot of retunring players this year. Very bad loss for Roon Zook and the Illini.

        7) Had to be a little impressed by point guard-turned-QB Greg Paulus, who was OK in Orange's 23-20 OT loss to Minnesota. Paulus threw a bad INT in overtime that cost Syracuse, but the kid last played football in high school four years ago, so he has to be at a little rusty.

        6) My question-- if Duke played Syracuse in football this season, who would Mike Krzyzewski root for?

        5) Opelt kid on Toledo was 41-69 for 423 yards passing in a 52-31 loss at Purdue Saturday; Rockets were 10-19 on third down, but gave up 315 yards on the ground to the Boilermakers.

        4) Notre Dame-Michigan play next week; they both looked sharp in '09 debuts, routing Nevada/Western Michigan by combined score of 66-7.

        3) Was impressed by Washington in their 31-23 loss to LSU; winless in 2008, the Huskies had some bounce, they've got talent on offense, and they hung with LSU for most of this game, before superior speed won out. Gutty scheduling by the Tigers, going up to Seattle for a game.

        2) From the you-never-know department: LSU coach Les Miles met his future wife in a parking lot. So Mrs Miles met a guy in a parking lot and wound up marrying him, and guy winds up a millionaire. It is further proof that in this life, you just never know.

        1) Cal Bears looked very tough Saturday night, avenging last year's loss to Maryland by pounding the Terps, 52-13. This running best Best is really, really good. The Cal-USC game should be excellent this year.
