    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, September 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sooners take on the Cougars, the Trojans battle the Spartans, and Giants try to pick up a victory over the Brewers.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The college football season gets underway in earnest on Saturday, with a few ranked matchups highlighting the day's schedule. First up is No. 13 Georgia at No. 9 Oklahoma State, with kickoff set for 3:30pm ET. The Cowboys are pegged as 4.5-point favorites in that contest, with the total at 61 points. Later on it'll be No. 20 BYU at No. 3 Oklahoma; kickoff will be at 7:00pm ET at a neutral site - Cowboys Stadium. The Sooners are big 22-point favorites, with the total at 66.5.

Finally, No. 5 Alabama will play No. 7 Virginia Tech at 8:00pm ET in another neutral-site matchup - at Atlanta's Georgia Dome. The Crimson Tide are getting the oddsmakers' support in that one - they're 6.5-point favorites with a total of 38.

Top-ranked Florida will play host to unheralded Charleston-Southern on Saturday night, while No. 2 Texas will take on LA Monroe. That Gators game doesn't have a line posted, while the Longhorns are huge 41.5-point favorites. Other games that involve ranked teams on Saturday: San Jose State at No. 4 USC (-33), Navy at No. 6 Ohio State (-22), Akron at No. 9 Penn State (-27), No. 11 LSU (-18) at Washington, Maryland at No. 12 California (-21), Jacksonville State at No. 15 Georgia Tech (no line), Citadel at No. 21 North Carolina (no line), Northern Iowa at No. 22 Iowa (no line), Nevada at No. 23 Notre Dame (-14.5), Florida Atlantic at No. 24 Nebraska (-22.5), and Northern Colorado at No. 25 Kansas (no line).

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

John Lackey (9-7, 3.92 ERA) will try to pitch the Angels to a win on Saturday when he takes the mound in Kansas City against the Royals and Zack Greinke (13-8, 2.32 ERA). Righthander Lackey dominated the Athletics in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just a single unearned run on five hits over eight innings of work. Righthander Greinke was even better last time out vs. the M's; Greinke held Seattle scoreless on just a single hit in a complete-game victory that night.

Also on the AL schedule for Saturday: the Yankees at Toronto, Texas at Baltimore, Minnesota at Cleveland, Detroit at Tampa Bay, Seattle at Oakland, and Boston at the White Sox. Junichi Tazawa (2-3, 6.65 ERA) gets the ball for Boston; righthander Tazawa was shelled for nine runs on four hits by the ChiSox in his most recent start. Gavin Floyd (10-9, 3.97 ERA) goes for Chicago; righthander Floyd held Boston to two runs over six innings in his August 26 start.

Over in the NL, Matt Cain (12-4, 2.50 ERA) will battle Yovani Gallardo (12-10, 3.56 ERA) when the Giants take on the Brewers on Saturday. Righthander Cain hasn't picked up a win since July 24, going 0-2 with five no-decisions in his last seven trips to the mound despite his low ERA. Righthander Gallardo took a no-decision against the Pirates last time out, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work. Gallardo has allowed just 11 earned runs in his last five outings.

Elsewhere in the Senior Circuit on Saturday it'll be the Cubs at the Mets, St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Florida at Washington, Cincinnati at Atlanta, Arizona at Colorado, San Diego at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at Houston. Joe Blanton (9-6, 3.77 ERA) will take on Roy Oswalt (8-5, 3.80 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Blanton is 2-0 with two no-decisions in his last four starts, allowing eight total runs. Houston is 8-2 over righthander Oswalt's last 10 trips to the hill.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, the WNBA offers up three games on Saturday, with Los Angeles at San Antonio, Seattle at Minnesota, and Atlanta at Phoenix. The Mercury remain the most lucrative team in the league, posting 21-10 records both straight-up and against-the-spread as the regular season nears its end. However, Phoenix was blasted 106-76 on the road by Atlanta when the teams last met back on July 30. Erika Desouza picked up nine points and 14 rebounds in that win for the Dream.

      Bulldogs still have bite

Oklahoma State kicks off the season against Georgia having won 13 straight home openers. The Bulldogs, however, counter with eight straight road wins, yielding an average of just 11.2 points in their past five. Georgia also returns seven of its top nine tacklers and the Cowboys are without tight end Jamal Mosley and quarterback Zac Robinson is dinged up. The Bulldogs have a lot to wag about at +5.5 points and +180 straight up.

Bulldogs QB Joe Cox is under the weather heading into the weekend. He didn't travel with the team but is expected to play despite flu-like symtoms. Cox is filling the massive void left by Matthew Stafford, who went first overall in the NFL Draft. Sophomore Logan Gray is Georgia's backup should Cox's condition get worse.

      Bulldogs still have bite II

Call it the week of the Bulldog. Louisiana Tech won’t be scared to open its season against Auburn. The Bulldogs are 2-2 ATS against BCS opponents each of the past two years, including a 22-14 win over Mississippi State to start last fall. Meantime, Auburn still is trying to figure out an offensive identity, as the Tigers are a horrible 1-9 ATS in their past 10 overall. La Tech getting 13.5 points? Bow WOW.

      No defense for the defense

A disastrous game of musical chairs isn’t as messy as what could happen to the United States backline in its World Cup Qualifier against El Salvador Saturday. American center backs Oguchi Onyewu and Jay DeMerit are both out, meaning Carlos Bocanegra likely will have to move back inside and the horrible Steve Cherundolo is put into the lineup at left back. El Salvador figures to pack it in and try to play for the draw, putting Los Cuscatlecos at a great value at +2 goals for even money, or the total under three goals at -125.

      What a Georgia Peach

Why can’t Melanie Oudin keep stunning the world? The Georgia native is listed at +400 in her mid-morning matchup against Maria Sharapova (-900). The heavily-favored Russian, however, has yet to win a tournament this year, including losses in the French Open and Wimbledon to much lesser players before even reaching the semis. Oudin made it into the fourth round at Wimbledon and, with a win over Elena Dementieva earlier this week, she has proven she has the potential to be great.

      Enough is enough

Cleveland Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore is packing it in to have season-ending elbow surgery. Sizemore has been playing through the pain after missing time this season. He led the team with 18 home runs and was hitting .248 on the year. Sizemore will also have surgery below the belt (yikes!) to repair a lingering groin injury that has slowed his since the winter.

The Tribe giving Sizemore the green light on surgery is a sure sign that the club is packing it in on the season. Cleveland is currently 14 games out of the AL Central lead and had lost four in a row heading into Friday.

Toronto should make Rapids see Red

The Colorado Rapids are without top striker Connor Casey – away with the U.S. national team – and top midfielder Pablo Mastroeni – yellow card accumulation. Toronto, however, is at nearly full strength as midfielder Carl Robinson is expected to play. The Reds also beat the Rapids, 1-0, and 3-1 last season. This first meeting this year should go to Toronto, which is a steal at +280.

      Atlanta or bust

Carl Edwards should give gymnast Keri Strug a call if he plans on doing a back flip out of his car this weekend. The always exciting No. 99 will start his engine at Atlanta Sunday night with a broken foot. Edwards suffered a fracture in his right foot while playing Frisbee this week.

"I know this probably sounds ridiculous to a lot of people and I could hardly believe it myself," Edwards said in statement. "I was playing frisbee with a couple of buddies and we both went for the Frisbee at the same time. I put my foot on it, my friend dove for it, and the next thing you know ... we all heard a pop.

"I knew it was broken and we all kind of looked at each other in disbelief that of all things, I would break my foot playing frisbee."

Despite the injury, Edwards is scheduled to start the Pep Boy Auto 500. He has three wins at Atlanta in just 10 career starts at the half-mile oval. In his most recent running at AMS, Edwards finished third in the Kobolt Tools 500 back in March. Edwards sits fifth in the points standings despite not having won a race this season.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 10 preview and picks
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Sunday, September 6

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-7, 51.5)

The Blue Bombers are coming to Saskatchewan with a renewed energy following their domination of the Lions. Even more so, since the Roughriders defence is a far cry from what it used to be, allowing 256 points after eight games - the most by any CFL team. At the start of the season, nobody feared the Bombers attack but since the arrival of Michael Bishop and with the domination of RB Fred Reid, things have changed. But can Reid and Yvenson Bernard manage to be as productive in this game as they were against the Lions? Let me doubt it. The Roughriders attack is also more diversified, less predictable and, at home, they are always a very tough team. The oddsmakers have established the Riders as 7-point favorites but I doubt they will cover the spread. They should win but it will be a close game until the final whistle.

        Pick: Bombers +7

        Monday, September 7

Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-6, 47.5)

The Tiger Cats have been playing disciplined football and, within the limits of their talent, it has proven positive since the start of the season. The Argos, despite the fact they seem more talented on paper, have found ways to shoot themselves in the foot and it becomes more obvious each week that their head coach Bart Andrus is no Marc Trestman and that he struggles to master the subtleties of 3-down football. Kevin Glenn and Quinton Porter have proved more accurate than Kerry Joseph, rookie DeAndra’ Cobb is a better running back than Jamal Robertson and defensively, the Tiger Cats play with more cohesion. It won’t be easy, it won’t be pretty but Hamilton should again take advantage of their opponent’s mistakes to steal a victory. The six points, however, is another story.

        Pick: Toronto +6

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-6, 60)

Ricky Ray has been on fire in the past month and the Eskimos are finally playing to their potential, having won four of their last five - three of them after trailing late in a game. This team has character, no doubt about it. Arkee Whitlock, who had a tough start, is becoming a solid and versatile running back. He rushed for 302 yards in his last two games, scoring three touchdowns for the Eskimos. But can they beat the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium? They only did so once in their last four visits in Calgary. The Eskimos are, in my humble opinion, the best team in the West. But when they meet their Alberta rivals, in Calgary, logic doesn’t prevail.

        Pick: Calgary -6

        (Last Week 2-0, season 19-13)

          SCOREBOARD

          Saturday, September 5

San Francisco at Milwaukee (4:10 p.m. EDT). All-Star right-hander Matt Cain (12-4, 2.50 ERA) faces Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo (12-10, 3.56 ERA) in the second game of the weekend series. Cain is 0-2 with a 3.10 ERA in his last seven starts.

          STARS

          Friday

-Ryan Ludwick, Cardinals, homered twice to help St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 14-7.

-Vladimir Guerrero, Angels, hit a two-run single in the eighth inning off Kansas City's beleaguered bullpen, lifting Los Angeles to a 2-1 win.

-Bengie Molina, Giants, homered on the first pitch of the eighth to rally San Francisco over Milwaukee 3-2.

-John Baker, Marlins, homered and matched a career high with four RBIs in Florida's 9-6 win over Washington.

          HALLADAY WEEKEND

Roy Halladay pitched a one-hitter to snap a three-start losing streak and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees 6-0, ending New York's winning streak at seven games.

          SHUT-DOWN SIZEMORE

Cleveland Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore will miss the remainder of the season because of soreness in his left elbow that will require arthroscopic surgery. He'll also have lower abdominal surgery on an injured groin a week after the elbow operation.

          EFFICIENT

The Royals had 11 hits, the Angels three - but Los Angeles beat Kansas City 2-1 when Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run single in the eighth inning.

          ROAD WARRIOR

Scott Feldman tied a franchise record for road wins, giving up one run and four hits in 6 2-3 innings of Texas' 5-1 victory at Baltimore to improve to 11-1 on the road. The only other Texas pitchers to win as many away games in one season were Rick Helling (1998) and Vicente Padilla (2008). Feldman also matched Bobby Witt's team record of seven straight road victories, set in 1990.

          OFF THE CLIFF

Cliff Lee struggled for the second straight start after an eight-game winning streak. The left-hander lasted only three innings Friday in a 7-0 loss at Houston, giving up six runs and nine hits in three innings. He allowed a total of three runs in winning his first five starts with the Phillies, then gave up six runs on 10 hits in last weekend's loss to Atlanta before his early exit on Friday.

          IN A PINCH

Jason Giambi came through again Friday, delivering a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning to lift Colorado to a 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The veteran has driven in at least one run, and four total, in all three of his pinch-hitting appearances since joining the Rockies earlier this week.

          APPROACHING 2K

Ichiro Suzuki had two hits in Seattle's 6-3 victory over Oakland to move within four of 2,000 for his career. He is likely to become the second-fastest player in history to reach that plateau. Al Simmons did it in 1,390 games while Suzuki has played in 1,391. George Sisler is currently second on the list in 1,414 games.

          SWEET SIXTEEN

Justin Verlander got his 16th win of the season - just barely. Verlander (16-7) needed Adam Everett's tiebreaking RBI single during a three-run ninth and then had to sweat through Fernando Rodney's two-run ninth before the AL Central-leading Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Friday night.

          STATS

Last-place Pittsburgh lost its eighth straight, wasting a comeback against 17-game winning Adam Wainwright in a 14-7 loss to St. Louis. ... Florida won its third straight game by beating Washington 9-6. The Nationals have lost seven in a row. ... Cincinnati matched a season high with its fifth straight win, 3-1 over Atlanta. It was the Braves' third straight loss. ... Houston's Wandy Rodriguez (13-9) won his fifth straight home decision with the Astros' 7-0 victory over Philadelphia.

          SPEAKING

"I wasn't throwing the ball. It's grenade launching.'' - Nationals stand-in starter Garrett Mock, who took the place of Craig Stammen and allowed allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings.

          SEASONS

          Sept. 5

1908 - Brooklyn's Nap Rucker pitched a 6-0 no-hitter against Boston. Rucker struck out 14 and walked none.

1918 - Babe Ruth pitched a six-hitter as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 in the opening game of the World Series. The Series was started early due to World War I.

1954 - Roswell's Joe Bauman of the Longhorn League hit three home runs to give him 72 for the season. Bauman never made it to the majors.

1955 - Brooklyn pitcher Don Newcombe connected for his seventh homer of the season for a National League record for home runs by a pitcher. The Dodgers, behind Newcombe's power and 20th win, beat the Phillies 11-4.

1971 - J.R. Richard tied Karl Spooner's major league record by striking out 15 San Francisco Giants in his first major league game as the Houston Astros beat the Giants.

1982 - Roy Smalley hit a pair of three-run homers, one from each side of the plate, as the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 18-7.

1998 - Mark McGwire became the third player in baseball history to reach 60 home runs, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-0. He joined Babe Ruth and Roger Maris with 60 homers in a single season.

2001 - Roger Clemens became the second player in major league history to win 19 of his first 20 decisions, leading the New York Yankees over Toronto 4-3.

2002 - Alex Rodriguez became the fifth player in major league history to record successive 50-homer seasons, hitting two in Texas' 11-2 rout of Baltimore. Rodriguez, who hit 52 homers last season, joined Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr.

2003 - Mike Maroth became the first major league pitcher in 23 years to lose 20 games in a season when Detroit lost to Toronto 8-6. Maroth (6-20) allowed eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings. Oakland's Brian Kingman went 8-20 in 1980.

2006 - For the first time in more than three decades, there were seven shutouts in the major leagues on one day. It was the most shutouts on one day since there were a record eight on June 4, 1972, when 16 games were played. Thirteen games were played.

            This Day in Baseball

On September 5 in Baseball History...

1908 - Brooklyn's Nap Rucker pitched a 6-0 no-hitter against the Boston Braves at Washington Park. Rucker struck out fourteen and walked none. The Dodgers made three errors.

1918 - The Cubs switch their home games to Comiskey Park with its larger seating capacity for the World Series. Babe Ruth/A>, having completed thirteen scoreless innings in his first World Series two years ago, adds nine more in edging Hippo Vaughn 1-0 in the opener. During the seventh-inning stretch, a military band plays "The Star Spangled Banner." From then on, it is played at every World Series game, every season opener, and whenever a band is present to play it, though it is not yet adopted as the national anthem. The custom of playing it before every game will begin during World War II, after the installation of public address systems.

1921 - Walter Johnson breaks Cy Young's career strikeout mark by fanning seven Yankees to run his total to 2,287.

1954 - Joe Bauman, playing for Roswell of the Longhorn League, hit three home runs to give him 72 for the season. Bauman never made it to the majors.

1955 - Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers hit his seventh homer of the season for a National League record for home runs by a pitcher. The Dodgers beat the Phillies 11-4.

1971 - J.R. Richard tied Karl Spooner's Major League record by striking out fifteen San Francisco Giants in his first Major League game as the Houston Astros beat the Giants.

1979 - Matt Keough of the A's beats the Brewers 6-1 for his first victory after 14 straight losses. He ended 1978 with four defeats and barely avoided tying the American League record of nineteen consecutive losses.

1982 - Roy Smalley hit a pair of three-run homers, one from each side of the plate, as the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 18-7.

1998 - Mark McGwire became only the third player to reach sixty home runs, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-0. He joined Babe Ruth and Roger Maris with sixty homers in a single season.

                Friday, September 4

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Baltimore Orioles (+138, 9.5)

                Everyone loves throwback night.

But since acquiring veteran catcher Ian Rodriguez from the Astros last month, every night has been throwback night in Texas.

Rodriguez, who was only supposed to take the role of a backup catcher/team leader (think Tom Berenger in Major League), has found the fountain of youth in his return to Arlington.

Heading into Friday, the former AL MVP is hitting .286 with five doubles and one home run through his first 10 games with the Rangers. He’s caught six out of the last seven games, as of the opener against the Orioles.

“Absolutely. I love to play and I’ll be ready,” Rodriguez told the Associated Press. “You know me, I’ve been doing it for 19 years. I’m going to continue doing it.”

Pudge’s biggest impact has been behind the plate. On top of mentoring the Rangers young pitchers, he helped spark those arms in recent games. Texas swept the Blue Jays in three games earlier this week, with the pitching staff allowing just eight total runs.

“He’s going to help all of our young guys, our young catchers, help our pitchers to get another vantage point, how to work guys,” right-hander Kevin Millwood told reporters. “It’s probably going to make us all better.”

                Pick: Texas -148

Detroit Tigers at Tampa Bay Rays (-165, 9)

Jim Leyland has his Tigers by the toe.

The surly manager has timed his team’s play perfectly and has them peaking at the right time. Detroit swept the Cleveland Indians this week, securing its lead in the American League Central. Heading into Friday’s opener with the Rays, the Tigers have a five game cushion over the Twins.

But Leyland hasn’t allowed them to get too cozy at top the standings. According to The Detroit News, the manager doesn’t want his players thinking about the standings or getting fat and happy after a tree-game sweep.

"I don't like comments like that," Leyland told reporters. "Just go play the game. Don't start talking about anything. I want them feeling good about themselves, but by that I mean continuing to concentrate, competing as hard as you can and not doing a lot of talking."

                Pick: Detroit +155

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Joe Blanton, Philadelphia Phillies

Blanton is following suit in the Phillies rotation. Along with Hamels, Lee and a revitalized Pedro Martinez, Blanton has Philadelphia rolling toward another solid September.

He has given up three or fewer runs in 12 straight starts and owns a 2.54 ERA and 1.09 WHIP since the break. In his most recent start, Blanton went seven innings against the Braves, giving up one run on three hits. That was his 10th quality start in a row.

                  Randy Wolf, Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers bullpen should send Wolf a card and some flowers for blowing a win in the left-hander's most recent outing. Unfortunately, Hallmark has yet to tap into the “Sorry we pissed away your awesome arm” demographic.

Wolf put in his fifth straight quality start, allowing just two runs through six innings while striking out seven batters. That letdown handed Wolf a no-decision and spoiled his four-game winning streak. It also snubbed the starter of his 100th career victory.

Since the All-Star break, Wolf is 5-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 55 strikeouts.

                  Slumping

                  Brett Cecil, Toronto Blue Jays

Cecil’s final start of 2009 couldn’t come quick enough. The youngster has been shelled in his past two starts, allowing 12 earned runs in just over eight innings of work.

Cecil was supposed to be shut down for the year last week, but manager Cito Gaston granted the southpaw a chance to redeem himself and end the year on a high note. Despite allowing seven runs in five innings his last time out, Cecil still earned a "W" against the Rangers thanks to the 18 runs Toronto put on the board.

Don’t expect the Jays to match that output this weekend. Toronto’s recent efforts have locals pining for the start of the hockey season. And if you’re a Maple Leafs fan, you know things in the Rogers Centre must be bad.

                  Mat Latos, San Diego Padres

Latos is another young arm getting his final start of 2009. The Padres right-hander was looking good early in his most recent trip to the bump, but was lit up for four runs in the fourth inning against the Marlins, giving Latos his third loss in his past four starts.

Latos showed promise in a seven-inning shutout effort versus the Braves on Aug. 25. But that performance has been bookended by nightmarish showings. In his last three games, Latos posts a 5.79 ERA.

Seattle Storm vs. Minnesota Lynx (pick, 153)

The good news for the Seattle Storm is they only need one more win to tie up home-court advantage. The bad news is they’ll have to do it without their top player, Lauren Jackson.

Jackson has been out the past three games with a back injury and it finally caught up with the Storm in their most recent effort. Seattle fell to Washington 78-67, which ended a six-game winning streak and a six-game undefeated streak against the spread.

Sue Bird has been filling in with over 17 points per game in Jackson’s absence but the Lynx aren't her favorite kitties. Bird scored just seven points combined in the last two meetings with Minnesota.

                              Pick: Minnesota pick

Atlanta Dream vs. Phoenix Mercury (-4.5, 190)

You've got to love the WNBA sometimes. By early Friday afternoon, oddsmakers had already set a line for this game, even though Atlanta was scheduled to play Sacramento Friday night.

You’d never see that in the NBA. What you do see, however, is an total of 190.

That is an absolutely staggering total by lady ball standards and the highest number that either team has seen this season. The reason?

The last seven games have jumped over the total for Atlanta heading into Friday night’s game and three of the last four have gone over for the Mercury. They also happen to be the two highest scoring teams in the league by a decent margin.

                              Pick: Over 190
