    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, September 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mariners host the Angels, the Red Sox continue their series in Tampa Bay, and the Brewers take on the Cardinals' ace.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Scott Kazmir (8-7, 5.92 ERA) will make his Angels debut on Wednesday night as Los Angeles plays in Seattle. Lefthander Kazmir, acquired in a trade with the Rays last week, has pitched well in each of his past three starts, allowing just seven earned runs over 19 2-3 innings of work. The Mariners will counter with Felix Hernandez (13-5, 2.77 ERA). Righthander Hernandez is coming off a win over the Royals in which he gave up three earned runs in seven innings pitched.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: Kansas City at Oakland, the White Sox at Minnesota, the Yankees at Baltimore, Cleveland at Detroit, Toronto at Texas, and Boston at Tampa Bay. The Red Sox will go with Josh Beckett (14-5, 3.80 ERA) in that matchup. Righthander Beckett has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 18 1-3 innings pitched. Matt Garza (7-9, 3.95 ERA) gets the ball for the Rays; righthander Garza hasn't picked up a victory since July 24.

Over in the National League Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter (14-3, 2.20 ERA) will take the mound at home against the Brewers and Dave Bush (3-5, 5.88 ERA). Righthander Carpenter took a hard-luck loss against the Astros last time out, surrendering just two earned runs over his six innings of work. St. Louis is 8-2 in his last 10 starts. Righthander Bush has given up 18 earned runs over his last 11 innings of work; the Brewers have won just twice in his last seven mound trips.

Elsewhere around the NL on Wednesday it'll be Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Houston at the Cubs, Washington at San Diego, San Francisco at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Florida, the Mets at Colorado, and Arizona at the Dodgers. Max Scherzer (8-8, 4.26 ERA) takes on Chad Billingsley (12-8, 3.83 ERA) in that contest. Righthander Scherzer is coming off a shaky win over Houston (six runs in six innings), while righthander Billingsley has taken the loss in two straight outings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there's just one game on the WNBA's schedule for Wednesday, with Phoenix at Indiana. The Fever have a comfortable lead atop the Eastern standings, and they head into Wednesday's matchup with the Mercury at 20-8 straight-up and 17-11 against-the-spread. Indiana beat Phoenix 90-83 on the road when the teams met back on August 8. Katie Douglas had 28 points and 10 boards for Indiana in that win. Diana Taurasi tossed in 16 points for the Mercury.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's wagering tips

      Wednesday, September 2

The price is right. Or is it?

The Seattle Mariners are -130 against the Los Angeles Angels, which is about as low a price you are going to find when Felix Hernandez is pitching at Safeco Field. Hernandez's average home price this season has been -157, compared to just under -113 on the road.

But home is where Hernandez has been more beatable. Hernandez is 8-2 with a 2.06 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP on the road but "just" 5-3 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP at Safeco.

      Turn up the heat

The Mercury-Fever matchup pits the WNBA's best teams in a possible Finals preview. The recent history of the series has been very one-sided - both straight up and against the spread - for Indiana. The Fever has covered the number in the last four meetings, three times as an underdog. Indiana also has won the last three showdowns outright and is giving 3.5 points to Phoenix.

      Taking one for the team

When fifth-ranked Alabama faces seventh-ranked Virginia Tech in Atlanta in the marquee matchup of college football's opening weekend Saturday, it may be without senior starting defensive end Brandon Deaderick, who was shot in the arm and hospitalized, according to the Tuscaloosa News.

The report said Deaderick likely would be released after an overnight stay, but Alabama coach Nick Saban did not say when Deaderick would return to the team. He started every game last season, collecting four sacks.

Alabama was a 7-point favorite for the neutral site game, but the line has dropped to 6.5. The total is 38.

      No days off for Holliday

The hottest hitter in the National League since the All-Star break wasn't in the National League at the All-Star break. Matt Holliday, who was traded from Oakland to St. Louis on July 23, is batting .371 with 11 homers and 43 RBI since the break. He had eight homers and 43 RBI before the break.

The Cardinals are -290 to visiting Milwaukee. They have won seven of eight overall, playing to the under six times, and have won four of the last five meetings.

      Penny for your thoughts

The Giants are wasting no time with Brad Penny, starting him against the Phillies. In his last five starts with the Red Sox, Penny was 0-4 with a 9.11 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. However, in three straight starts against National League clubs in June, he was 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA. San Francisco is +185 and the total is 8.5.

      Silver & black & blue

It has been a rough preseason for the Oakland Raiders, and it just got rougher. Nnamdi Asomugha, perhaps the best cornerback in the NFL, will miss two weeks with a chipped bone in his left wrist, according to ESPN.com. The injury could limit Asomugha's ability to bump receivers and possibly make plays on the ball.

Asomugha is not expected to play in the preseason finale at Seattle Thursday, in which the Seahawks are 3-point favorite. He also could miss the season opener against San Diego on Sept. 14, where the Raiders are 9-point home underdogs.

      Notable quotable

"When you go to sleep and think about how good or bad you are, you're not lying. I'm not lying to myself. Do we have a shot? Of course. If we keep playing like (this), are we going to have a shot? No chance."

-- Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, refuting the notion that the team has given up on the season with the trade of Jim Thome. The White Sox have lost eight of nine and are six games out of first place in the AL Central with 30 games to play.

        Eight-pack for Wednesday

Some NFL trends to consider with the season approaching........

-- Over the last five seasons, Cowboys are 18-26-2 against the spread the week after a win.

-- Giants are 28-15 vs spread when favored the last four seasons.

-- Eagles covered nine of their last twelve games as an underdog.

-- Despite having biggest stadium in NFL, Redskins are just 5-10-1 vs spread in their last sixteen games as a home favorite.

-- Since 2006, Bills are 12-5 vs spread if the spread is 3 points or less.

-- Since 2003, Dolphins covered just four of 26 as a home favorite.

-- New England covered 21 of its last 29 games as a road favorite.

-- Since 2003, Jets are 5-14-1 as road dog in non-divisional games.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a late summer day....

        13) This is how the NFL tries to protect the crummy teams: of Detroit's 16 games this season, five of them are against teams that played Monday night games the previous week. This is no coincidence.

        12) Vikings have 11 dome games, five outdoor games this year, but the late December game at Soldier Field in bad weather against the Bears is going to be huge. I disagree with most of the mainstream media, which likes the Favre move right now. I don't think it'll turn out well. There is something special about a team that has bonded well. Minnesota hasn't.

        11) Alabama officials have approved an $80 million expansion that will bring seating at Bryant-Denny Stadium from 92,138 to over 101,000, starting with the 2010 season-- it includes 36 luxury boxes. As long as they keep Nick Saban happy, they're printing money in Tuscaloosa.

        10) 13 of the top 22 players on Florida State's defense are freshmen or sophomores, which makes for a really, really young defense.

        9) Those "Legends Seats" in prime locations in the Bronx ballpark that cost $2,500 during the regular season will cost $275 for the playoffs and $415 if the Bombers get into the World Series (hopefully not). Will be interesting to see what the greedy bastards charge for those seats in '10.

        8) OK, I feel old. Stanford has a quarterback named Andrew Luck whose dad Oliver played at West Virginia and with the Oilers in the NFL-- the elder Luck is four months younger than me..........

        7) Jacoby Ellsbury made two great catches in centerfield Tuesday, one with the bases loaded and one out in the 8th inning with Red Sox nursing a 7-4 lead. Both were going to his right, so it helped that he's lefty.

        6) Am looking forward to Georgia-Oklahoma State game this weekend; what a great game for the first weekend. Would like the Dawgs to win if they just had a more experienced QB. Think Georgia will try to run the ball down OSU's throat, but can QB Cox hit couple of big plays when the Cowboys stack the line to stop the running game?

        5) USC has had a lot of injuries in preseason camp; they have a pair of new coordinators and a freshman QB starting who threw 18 INTs last season, when he was in high school. I'm sure Trojans still have a ton of talent, but hard to believe they're fourth best team in country right now.

        4) Army Cadets have a 6-10, 297-pound WR who was a lineman until the new coach moved him to receiver. Wasn't aware service academies could have kids who were that big. Back in the 80's, David Robinson grew several inches after he got to the Naval Academy.
        3) Good news for tennis fans (ahem) like myself; Maria Sharapova won her first round match at the US Open. As long as she keeps winning, we will keep watching. Gotta love women's tennis.

        2) A's switched to a 6-man starting rotation as a way of limiting innings for their terrific young prospects Anderson/Cahill. Plus, they're buried in last place, another dismal September, but at least now they have put up a framework of what could be a contending team the next few years.

        1) Have to feel bad for Bengal fans; first they drafted Alabama lineman Andre Smith, who slipped in the draft after some off-field issues, then he holds out most of the summer, now he breaks his foot in the first week he practices. Young man showed up out of shape for the combine back in February, which I guess should have been a red flag for his new team.

          SCOREBOARD

          Wednesday, September 2

Los Angeles at Seattle (6:40 p.m. EDT). Scott Kazmir will make his first start for the Angels after being acquired from Tampa Bay on Friday. He will face Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who has 13 wins and a 2.77 ERA.

          STARS

          Tuesday

-Cole Hamels, Phillies, pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts for his fourth career shutout in a 1-0 victory over San Francisco. The left-hander extended his scoreless innings streak to 19, tying a career best, and won for the first time since July 28.

-Josh Hamilton, Rangers, snapped out of his extended power drought with two home runs, leading Texas past Toronto 5-2 for a doubleheader sweep. The Rangers won the opener 5-2.

-Jorge Posada, Yankees, homered twice and New York beat Baltimore 9-6.

-Tim Hudson, Braves, returned to the majors and pitched Atlanta to a 4-3 victory at Florida after a rain delay of 2 hours, 50 minutes. Hudson gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings in his first big league start since having elbow ligament replacement surgery almost 13 months ago.

-Jose Morales, Twins, had a pinch-hit single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Minnesota a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

-Placido Polanco and Carlos Guillen, Tigers, homered on successive pitches, lifting Detroit to an 8-5 win over Cleveland.

          SIDELINED

Mariners outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. had an MRI that showed inflammation in his balky left knee but no structural damage. Griffey had arthroscopic knee surgery in October. He had the knee drained earlier this season. Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said Griffey likely will not play until Thursday.

          WELCOME BACK

All-Star third baseman David Wright was activated from the disabled list and played his first game for the Mets since getting hit in the head by a fastball from San Francisco's Matt Cain on Aug. 15. Wearing his bulky, new protective batting helmet, Wright went 1 for 3 with a single and scored a run during New York's 8-3 loss at Colorado. ... The Cardinals activated third baseman Troy Glaus, sidelined all season following shoulder surgery in January, from the 60-day disabled list although manager Tony La Russa couldn't promise him regular playing time.

          BAD TIMING

A pair of All-Stars got injured in the thick of the pennant race. Texas third baseman Michael Young strained his left hamstring while running out a grounder in the second game of a doubleheader against Toronto. An MRI was scheduled Wednesday for Young, the longest-tenured Rangers player. He's in his ninth full season and has never reached the playoffs. Down in Florida, shortstop Hanley Ramirez left the Marlins' 4-3 loss to Atlanta with a tight left hamstring. The team said he is day to day. Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said the "cramp'' likely had a lot to do with a long rain delay, and doesn't think the injury will sideline his star slugger.

          CLOSE IT OUT

Jonathan Papelbon bailed Boston out of an eighth-inning jam to help the Red Sox beat the Rays 8-4. Papelbon entered with two runs in and the bases loaded with no outs and shut down the AL champions with help from a diving catch by center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Papelbon, who struck out B.J. Upton for the first out, got Carl Crawford to foul out to end the inning. The right-hander pitched a perfect ninth for his 33rd save.

          TOP BIRDS

Matt Holliday's three-run homer snapped a seventh-inning tie, lifting Joel Pineiro (14-9) to his eighth straight win as St. Louis beat Milwaukee 7-6. Albert Pujols added his major league-leading 42nd homer for the Cardinals, a major league-best 26-9 since acquiring Holliday in a July 24 trade with Oakland. They are 30-4 since July 1 in starts by their big three - Adam Wainwright, Chris Carpenter and Pineiro.

          BRAVE HEART

Aaron Boone returned to the major leagues, rejoining the Houston Astros five months after having open-heart surgery. The 36-year-old third baseman was activated off the disabled list. "It's good to be in this position and back here after all that has gone through in my life this year. I'm excited about it,'' he said. Boone was not in the lineup against the Chicago Cubs, but will play soon, manager Cecil Cooper said.

          INAUSPICIOUS START

Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco, making his major league debut, gave up six runs and nine hits in three innings, walking three and striking out three in an 8-5 loss to Detroit. Carrasco, obtained from Philadelphia in the Cliff Lee deal, allowed three homers after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus.

          MONEY MEN

Hours after signing a two-year contract extension, Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin wrapped up a 7-6 victory over Milwaukee for his NL-leading 37th save in 39 chances. Franklin's new deal runs through 2011 and is worth $6.5 million plus incentives. The 36-year-old right-hander was selected to his first All-Star team in July. St. Louis also signed left-handed specialist Trever Miller to a new two-year deal for this year and 2010 worth $2 million in base salary per season. His old contract for this year, signed as a free agent last November, had been worth $500,000.

          POWER ON

Texas' Josh Hamilton had gone 23 games and 99 at-bats since his previous homer Aug. 7 until a 435-foot drive over the Rangers' bullpen in right-center on the first pitch of the fourth inning in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Toronto. An inning later, Hamilton pulled a two-run shot down the right-field line.

          ON A ROLL

The Yankees beat Baltimore 9-6 to move 36 games over .500 (84-48) for the first time since finishing the 2004 season 101-61. It was New York's 22nd win in 28 games.

          MEAGER OFFENSE

The Mariners beat the Angels 2-1. It was the 43rd time in 133 games the AL's lowest-scoring team managed two runs or fewer. Yet Seattle improved to 29-16 in one-run games, the most such decisions and wins in baseball.

          THREE BAGGER

Billy Butler hit the Royals' major league-best 43rd triple in a 4-3 win over Oakland. It was his first since Aug. 30, 2007, against Detroit in Kansas City - a span of 1,030 at-bats and 278 games.

          STREAKS AND STATS

Matt Kemp homered for the fourth consecutive game in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-3 victory over Arizona. ... Randy Wells (10-7) allowed an unearned run and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-1 victory over Houston, becoming the first Cubs rookie to reach 10 wins since Kerry Wood in 1998. ... With a 4-1 victory, San Diego beat the Nationals for the 30th time in 39 games. Washington has lost five straight and 12 of 15 overall.

          SPEAKING

"I was hoping I remembered how to jog around the bases. ... There was a sense of relief. I was glad I proved myself, that I've still got game pop instead of just batting practice pop.'' - Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton, who homered twice in a 5-2 win over Toronto to cap a doubleheader sweep. Hamilton had gone 23 games and 99 at-bats without a long ball.

          SEASONS

          Sept. 2

1952 - Mike Fornieles of the Washington Senators, in his major league debut, pitched a one-hitter for a 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics in the second game of a doubleheader.

1965 - Ernie Banks hit his 400th home run as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 at Wrigley Field. The blow came off Curt Simmons in the third inning.

1971 - Cesar Cedeno's 200-foot fly ball in the fifth inning fell for an inside-the-park grand slam as second baseman Jim Lefebvre and right fielder Bill Buckner of the Dodgers collided. The hit helped the Houston Astros beat Los Angeles 9-3.

1972 - Milt Pappas of the Chicago Cubs retired 26 consecutive San Diego Padres before walking pinch-hitter Larry Stahl on a 3-2 pitch. Pappas then retired Gary Jestadt to finish his 8-0 no-hitter.

1987 - Houston's Kevin Bass went 4-for-4, including home runs from both sides of plate, and drove in three runs as the Astros posted a 10-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Bass became the first National League player to homer from both sides of the plate twice in one season.

1990 - Dave Stieb, who had lost three no-hit bids with one out to go in the previous two seasons, finally pitched one as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Cleveland 3-0. It was the record ninth no-hitter of the season.

1993 - The expansion Colorado Rockies drew 47,699 fans for their 6-1 loss to Montreal to set a single-season NL attendance record with a 62-game total of 3,617,863. Los Angeles set the previous record of 3,608,881 in 1982. Toronto set the major league record of 4,028,318 in 1992.

1996 - Mike Greenwell set a major league record by driving in all nine Boston runs, the final one on a 10th-inning single to give the Red Sox a 9-8 victory over Seattle.

1999 - Cal Ripken hit his 400th career home run, connecting off right-hander Rolando Arrojo in the third inning of the Baltimore Orioles' game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

2001 - New York's Mike Mussina came within one strike of pitching the first perfect game in the 89-year history of Fenway Park in a 1-0 win over Boston. Mussina's bid was broken up by pinch-hitter Carl Everett's clean single.

2002 - Miguel Tejada had his second straight game-ending hit when he singled home Terrence Long with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and Oakland tied the longest winning streak in AL history with a 7-6 victory over Kansas City. Oakland, which overcame a 5-0 deficit, equaled the 19 straight wins by the 1906 Chicago White Sox and the 1947 New York Yankees.

2003 - Eric Gagne set a major league record with his 55th consecutive save in Los Angeles's 4-1 victory over Houston.

2004 - Gary Sheffield became the second player in history to drive in 100 runs for five different teams, picking up three RBI in the New York Yankees 9-1 win over Cleveland. Sheffield and Hall of Famer Dan Brouthers (1887-94) are the only players to accomplish the feat. Sheffield previously drove in 100 runs for San Diego (1992), Florida (1996), Los Angeles (1999-01) and Atlanta (2003).

Today's birthday: Jason Hammel 27; Rich Aurilia 38.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins (-105, 8.5)

The Minnesota Twins have risen from the ashes in the American League Central to pull just 3.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the division.

Minnesota wrapped August with an 8-2 record in its last 10 games heading into Tuesday’s Game 2 with the White Sox. Chicago’s current funk has also helped the Twins' surge. The ChiSox have plummeted in the standing after posting an 11-17 record last month.

The biggest force pushing the Twins to within striking distance of the division title has been the team’s pitching staff. After underachieving all summer, the Minny arms posted a collective 3.17 ERA last week and made up for the lack of offense. The Twins managed to score just 20 runs on .255 hitting.

"We're playing pretty good and trying to keep it going," catcher Joe Mauer told the media. "We're worried about us winning games instead of looking at the scoreboard."

Minnesota took Game 1 4-1 Monday night and has won 20 of the past 26 meeting with the White Sox at the Metrodome heading into Tuesday.

                  Pick: Minnesota

Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics (-160, 9)

When the cat’s away the mice will play.

The Kansas Royals are hoping this age-old adage proves true with manager Trey Hillman away from the team following the death of his father in-law. Hillman left Sunday and is expected to miss all three games with the A’s this week.

Bench coach and former Toronto Blue Jays skip John Gibbons has taken the reigns in Hillman’s absence. He took one on the chin Monday, losing 8-5 in Game 1 in Oakland. That loss was Kansas City’s 81st of the season and seventh in the past 10 games heading into Tuesday.

"I've got a good idea how (Hillman) does things and what he wants to do," Gibbons told reporters. "So I'll just run with that."

Perhaps Gibbons should try doing the opposite of his superior given that the Royals are on pace for another 100-loss season and have a tough schedule facing them in the final weeks of the season.

Going to the bump for Gibbons is struggling righty Brian Bannister. He’s been roughed up in his recent outings and has just one win in his nine starts since the All-Star break.

                  Pick: Oakland

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Tim Lincecum (13-4, 2.33 ERA), San Francisco Giants

It’s kind of hard to believe this kid was almost traded for Alex Rios. The Giants were looking for a good young bat and Rios, then with the Blue Jays, was coming off an All-Star season.

San Francisco fans should let out a huge sign of relief that the trade never materialized.

Lincecum’s stuff is – to borrow a line from Chicago Bulls radio man Chuck Swirsky – sick, wicked and nasty.

He pitched eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the Rockies his last time to the bump. The Giants won just once over his last four road starts, but the price is nice.

If you don’t like want to back the away team, think about the under. Seven of the last nine times Lincecum took the bump, the game has finished below the total.

Ted Lilly (9-8, 3.35), Chicago Cubs

This lefty has pitched great over his last three starts, but his slumping teammates have given him little support. Lilly has allowed just four earned runs and 3 in his last 19 1-3 innings. The under has cashed in each of those three outings

September has proved to be a good time to back the 33-year-old California native. Lilly went 4-1 with a 3.30 ERA last September and 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA the year before.

                    Slumping

Brian Bannister (7-11, 4.60), Kansas City Royals

You’re rolling the dice anytime you decide to back this streaky starter. Of course with the way he’s pitching and the way his team’s playing right now, the odds are stacked against Bannister bettors.

The righty hurler saw his ERA grow after a forgettable August. The Royals went 1-5 in his five starts and 2-4 on the runline.

He’s delivered quality starts in only two of his last nine trips to the mound. The over is 3-0 in his last three starts as well.

David Bush (3-5, 5.88), Milwaukee Brewers

Bush looked good in his first start since coming off a two-month stint on the DL last week. But he lost control of the game in the fifth inning when it looked like he ran out of gas.

“It’s frustrating, disappointing, whatever you want to say,” the righty said after getting charged with five runs in the 8-5 loss.

If you like the price of the Brewers today against Carpenter-led Cardinals, you might want to play the first five innings instead. Bush doesn’t look like his stamina is up to par yet after the long layoff.

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees (-$2.20, O/U 9.5 under -$1.15): The Yankees are winning at a blistering pace. They are now 36 games above .500 for the first time since going 101-61 in 2004. New York is 22-6 in its last 28 games. The Yankees are 29-9 in their last 38 games when facing a right-handed starter. New York is averaging 7.4 runs in its last 13 games. Combine this run-scoring with CC Sabathia on the mound and it’s easy to see why the Yankees are better than 2-to-1 favorites in this matchup. Sabathia (15-7, 3.56 ERA) has been huge in his last five starts with a 1.93 ERA and a 44-to-six strikeout-to-walk ratio. Sabathia hasn’t lost since July 28, a span of six starts in which he has gone 5-0 with a 2.64 ERA. The big lefty last faced Baltimore on May 7 at Camden Yards and threw a complete game four-hit shutout.

The Yankees are 27-8 in their last 35 meetings versus American League East clubs.

Key Injuries - Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder) is on the DL.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Orioles: Right-handed rookie Jason Berken (4-11, 6.33 ERA) faces a huge challenge. Berken has won three of his last five decisions, including the past two, after enduring nine straight losses. He’s pitching better since switching from a four-seam fastball to a two-seam sinker. He gave up two earned runs and five hits last Friday in a 13-4 victory over Cleveland. The under has cashed in eight of Berken’s past 10 home starts. The Orioles, though, are 3-10 in Berken’s last 13 overall starts. The Orioles have lost six of their last nine games. They are 13-29 in their past 42 games and 19-56 in their last 75 contests versus American League Eastern teams. Baltimore is 7-21 in its last 28 meetings against the Yankees. All-Star center fielder Adam Jones left Tuesday’s 9-6 loss with a sprained ankle. The under is 4-1 in the last five games between the two teams.

The Under is 7-2 in the Orioles’ last nine games on grass.

Key Injuries - Adam Jones (ankle) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks had a five-game winning streak snapped last night. They continue to struggle on the road, losing 12 of their past 15 away contests. Arizona is 2-10 in its last 12 road games when going against a right-handed starter. Justin Upton is red-hot going 15-for-28 with four doubles and three homers since coming off the disabled list last Wednesday. Max Scherzer is a big strikeout pitcher who is 8-8 with a 4.26 ERA. He has a 30-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his last four starts. The 25-year-old righty has intriguing potential, but has already worked 139 1/3 innings this season after pitching 109 innings last year when he was with Triple A Tucson and the Diamondbacks. Arizona is 5-12 in Scherzer’s past 17 road outings. The Diamondbacks have managed to win just twice in nine games when Scherzer has pitched on the road against a team with a winning record.

The Under is 8-3 in Scherzer’s last 11 starts versus National League West teams.

Key Injuries - Chad Qualls (knee) is on the DL.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-$1.70, O/U 8 over -$1.15): The Dodgers play the Diamondbacks with a great deal of confidence at home having posted 10 victories the past 12 times they’ve hosted them. The under is 7-2-2 the past 11 times these two teams have met. Right-hander Chad Billingsley, 12-8 with a 3.83 ERA, usually is tough versus teams under .500. Los Angeles is 17-4 in Billingsley’s last 21 home starts against a team with a losing mark. The Dodgers are 9-2 in Billingsley’s last 11 starts versus a team with an under .500 record. Los Angeles also is 12-2 in Billingsley’s past 14 starts versus National League West squads. Billingsley did lose in his last start, giving up four earned runs, seven hits and four walks in a 4-2 loss at Cincinnati last Friday. Matt Kemp has smacked a home run in four straight games. The Dodgers are 52-24 in their last 76 games versus NL West foes.

The Under is 14-3-2 in Los Angeles’ last 19 games.

Key Injuries - Hiroki Kuroda (head) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Phoenix Mercury at Indiana Fever (-3.5, 176.5)

The Phoenix Mercury are getting into postseason form with just four games left on the schedule. But now face the best team in the East with the WNBA’s top seed and home-court advantage for the entire playoffs on the line.

Heading into Tuesday’s game with the Detroit Shock, the Mercury took back-to-back wins over the Sun and Sparks to put some space between them and the Seattle Storm in the Western Conference standings. They are 8-3 SU and ATS against the Eastern Conference this year, as of Tuesday.

"We have a goal to have the best record, we fought this far to get to a position where we have an opportunity to do something really good in the regular season," leading scorer Diana Taurasi told the media following Saturday’s win over Connecticut. "I think that always carries over into the postseason, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Wednesday’s games pit the Mercury’s top-ranked offense against the premier defensive club in the WNBA. The Fever are allowing a league-low 72.1 points per game this season and held Phoenix to 83 points – almost 10 points below their season average – when the teams met in Arizona in early August. Indiana won that matchup 90-83 as a 4-point road underdog.

"We're not going to get the same Phoenix team we got out in Phoenix," Fever guard Katie Douglas told the Indianapolis Star. "We're not going to be assured that just because we're playing them at home that we're going to get a win. We know they're an explosive team."

The Fever have won and covered in the last three clashes with the Mercury and have a covered the spread in seven of their last 10 meetings going back to 2004. Indiana owns a 13-2 record at home and has covered in 10 of those games.

                              Pick: Indiana
