    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, August 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox face the Blue Jays' ace, the Phillies try to top the Braves, and the NFL preseason spotlight shines on Denver.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone NFL preseason game on Sunday is a good one - the Bears and new quarterback Jay Cutler will travel to Denver to take on the Broncos. The oddsmakers have the Broncos pegged as 2.5-point home favorites for Sunday's game, even though they are 0-2 so far during the preseason. Cutler's Bears enter the game at 1-1, as they beat the Giants 17-3 in Week 2 exhibition action. Cutler went 8-of-13 for 121 yards passing and a touchdown for Chicago that day.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Jair Jurrjens (10-8, 2.91 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.88 ERA) as the Braves meet the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball this week. Righthander Jurrjens had to settle for a no-decision against the Padres last time out, allowing just one earned run over his 7 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Blanton is coming off a no-decision as well; he gave up three earned runs over six innings against the Pirates last time out. Philadelphia is 2-3 over Blanton's last five starts.

Also on tap in the National League on Sunday: the Dodgers at Cincinnati, San Diego at Florida, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, Washington at St. Louis, the Mets at the Cubs, Houston at Arizona, and Colorado at San Francisco. Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.43 ERA) will take on Matt Cain (12-4, 2.39 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Hammel has given up three or fewer earned runs in each of his last five outings. Righthander Cain hasn't been able to pick up a victory since July 24.

Meanwhile, Roy Halladay (13-7, 3.03 ERA) will pitch at Fenway Park on Sunday against the Red Sox and Jon Lester (10-7, 3.60 ERA). Righthander Halladay was knocked around by Tampa Bay last time out (seven earned runs in six innings), and he was beaten by the BoSox on August 19. Lefthander Lester has given up three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 trips to the mound. Lester got an easy win over the Jays on August 20, allowing one earned run over eight innings.

Elsewhere on Sunday's American League schedule it'll be the White Sox at the Yankees, Cleveland at Baltimore, Texas at Minnesota, Oakland at the Angels, Kansas City at Seattle, and Tampa Bay at Detroit. The Rays will give the ball to righthander Jeff Niemann (12-5, 3.87 ERA) in that contest, while the Tigers send righthander Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.38 ERA) to the mound. Verlander is coming off a shaky win over the Angels, surrendering four earned runs over 5 2-3 innings.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of Formula 1 will remain in Europe this weekend for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix. Rubens Barrichello took the checkered flag last time out, winning the European Grand Prix in Spain. Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen finished second and third at that event, while points leader Jenson Button was seventh. Button now has a 72-54 lead on Barrichello in the drivers championship.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, it's Minnesota at Washington, Chicago at New York, and Connecticut at Los Angeles in WNBA action on Sunday. The Sparks fell to 14-14 straight-up and 14-14 against-the-spread on the season with a 98-90 loss to Phoenix in their last contest. Los Angeles was missing guards Kristi Harrower and Candace Parker in that defeat due to personal reasons; Parker is expected to be back in action on Sunday. Los Angeles was beaten 82-71 by Connecticut on the road on July 14.

      This Day in Baseball

On August 30 in Baseball History...

1905 - Ty Cobb makes his major league debut, doubling off Jack CheXXXo, as Detroit defeats New York 5-3. The double is the first of his 4,189 hits, a record topped by Pete Rose in 1985.

1906 - After pitching a shutout in his major league debut, right-hander Joe Doyle of the Highlanders becomes the first player to start out with two shutouts when he beats the Nationals, 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories, seven will be shutouts. He is nicknamed Slow because of his time-consuming pace on the mound.

1910 - Tom Hughes of the New York Yankees pitched a no-hitter for 9 1/3 innings before giving up a single to Harry Niles of the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees lost 5-0, with Hughes giving up seven hits in 11 innings.

1912 - Earl Hamilton of the St. Louis Browns pitched a 5-1 no-hitter against the Tigers at Detroit.

1916 - Dutch Leonard of the Boston Red Sox pitched a no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns for a 4-0 victory.

1918 - The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 1-0, in a game that took only 57 minutes to play.

1922 - After hitting number 28 in the first inning, Babe Ruth argues too strongly over a called strike on his next at bat, and he is thrown out of the game. He is suspended for the fifth time of the year and is out for three days.

1965 - Following his doctor's advice, Casey Stengel announces his retirement as manager of the Mets. He will head up Mets scouting in California. The 75-year-old Stengel has been in professional baseball since 1910.

1984 - In a 9-3 win over the Twins, Red Sox slugger Jim Rice grounds into his 33rd double play of the season to break the major league record set by Jackie Jensen in 1954. By season's end, Rice will extend his new record to 36.

1986 - Tommy John, 43, and Joe Niekro, 41, pitched a doubleheader for the New York Yankees against Seattle to become the first 40-plus teammate combo to start a doubleheader since Sept. 13, 1933, when the Chicago Cubs' Sam Jones, 41, and Red Faber, 44, pitched against the Philadelphia Athletics. John lost the opener and Niekro won the second game, 3-0.

1987 - Kirby Puckett goes 6-for-6 with two home runs in Minnesota's 10-6 win over Milwaukee, tying the American League record for hits in a nine-inning game. Combined with yesterday's 4-for-5, two-home run performance, Puckett has a major league-record-tying ten hits in two games.

1988 - Kent Tekulve becomes the second pitcher in major league history to appear in 1,000 games by pitching 2 innings in Philadelphia's 7-5 win over San Francisco.

1995 - Detroit teammates Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell play in their 1,914th game together in a 10-7 loss to the White Sox. The pair tie the American League record for most games appeared in together.

          Sunday, August 30

          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox (-165, 8)

The Red Sox are not what the Doctor ordered.

Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay has not been himself in recent games and another date with the BoSox won’t help matters. Halladay is coming off back-to-back losses with one of those defeats credited to Boston.

The Red Sox got to Halladay for four runs on five hits in a 6-1 victory August 19. The crafty right-hander managed to strikeout seven batters but allowed two dingers in his worst showing against the AL East rival since the beginning of last season.

In his last starts, Halladay was hit hard by the Tampa Bay Rays. He allowed seven earned runs in six innings of work. Those two starts pretty much nixed any shot Halladay had of winning the AL Cy Young.

"I was trying to make quality pitches and I just didn't do it," Halladay told the press of his most recent starts. "I just did a bad job of pitching ahead, aggressively."

Heading into Saturday’s game, Boston has won four in a row against Toronto.

          Pick: Boston -165

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (-230, 10.5)

Total bettors are looking at the ChiSox for a little help this weekend. Anyone betting the over has cursed Chicago’s feeble offense, which has accounted for just two runs in the first two games of their series with the New York Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers even hung 10 runs on the board Saturday, leaving the White Sox to score just one run to push with 11-run total. However, Chicago registered just one hit and struck out six times in a 10-0 shutout loss. The White Sox didn’t let the score keepers take the night off – they did commit three errors Saturday.

"When you've got more errors than hits, you better look yourself in the mirror and start second-guessing yourself,” manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters. “But I'm second-guessing myself right now, making the wrong lineup every day. I second-guess myself bringing in the wrong guys to pitch, second-guess myself [in that] we work so hard to put this team together, all the way from Spring Training, and when I look on the field ... It gets to the point where [if] you are a veteran player -- and I have a lot of respect for them -- you appreciate what they [have done] for you in the past, but this is not Major League Baseball, sorry."

The Yankees pitching a defense has done a good job nullifying opponents’ bat, staying below the total in their past three games. For Chicago, this was the ninth time in the last 11 games the final score has been under the number.

          Pick: Under 10.5

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

            Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds

Maybe it’s that Rock Star attitude or all the “legal” substances coursing through his veins. Whatever it is, Reds starter Bronson Arroyo is red hot.

Since the All-Star break, the right-hander is one of the best arms in the National League. He’s posting a 2.54 ERA with a WHIP of 1.15 during that span. But, due to poor run protection and bad bullpen, Arroyo has only two wins since the break.

In his most recent start, Arroyo went seven innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits for a no-decision.

            Ross Ohlendorf, Pittsburgh Pirates

Ohlendorf apparently missed the memo on the Pirates packing it in for 2009. The righty is pitching like a postseason ace in his recent starts. He’s allowed more than two runs in just three of his past 10 starts and owns a 2.74 ERA since the All-Star break.

"He's fun to watch - the way he has developed, the way he has taken to everything," manager John Russell told reporters. "He has really grown as a pitcher, and it's been enjoyable to watch him grow. He just keeps taking it every outing and continuing to make great strides forward."

In his last three appearances, the Bucs are 3-0 with Ohlendorf pitching more than 19 innings in those wins. He went just over six innings against the heavy-hitting Philadelphia Phillies in his last starts, giving up just two earned runs (both home runs) for a no-decision.

            Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals

If the Cardinals are going to make noise this postseason, Adam Wainwright will be playing the crash symbols. The righty is 7-2 in his last 10 starts and owns a 1.27 ERA since the break.

In his last three starts, Wainwright has bookended a two-run, no-decision with shutout efforts. His most recent appearance was a eight-inning clean sheet against the Houston Astros in which he allowed only three hits and struck out five batters.

            Slumping

            Jeff Suppan, Milwaukee Brewers

Ah, what a difference a year makes. Around this time last season, C.C. Sabathia was pushing the Brew Crew into the Wild Card spot. Fast forward to 2009 and Jeff Suppan is toeing the rubber in Milwaukee – going winless since the middle of June.

Suppan has watched his ERA balloon to 9.00 in his four starts since the All-Star break. He spent a month on the injured list, making his return this past Tuesday. He went just over four innings and watched his pitch count pile up with five walks to his one strikeout. Suppan gave up nine hits which turned into four runs for a no-decision.

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants [4:05 PM ET]

Rockies: The Rockies enter this matchup having lost four games in a row, tying their longest streak of the season. They are 0-6 the past six times they have been a road underdog. Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.43 ERA) will try to end the skid. He has been on a roll during his past two starts. The right-hander pitched seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball at Washington and followed that up by holding the Dodgers to two runs in seven innings this past Tuesday. Hammel did throw a career-high 118 pitches in that start, though. Hammel has been far more effective on the road than at home. Away from Coors Field he is 6-4 with a 2.88 ERA this season, compared to 2-3 with a 6.47 ERA at home. Hammel faced the Giants at San Francisco in May. He held them scoreless in six innings getting a no-decision in a 1-0 loss.

The Rockies are 16-6-1 to the under in their last 23 games following a loss.

Key Injuries - Outfielder Dexter Fowler (knee) and pitcher Aaron Cook (shoulder) are on the DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$1.40, O/U 7.5 under $1.15): San Francisco is very tough at home. The Giants are 42-17 in their last 59 games as a home favorite at AT&T Park. They have won 42 of their last 62 home games when facing a right-handed starter. Matt Cain (12-4, 2.39 ERA) has a 2.72 ERA in his last six starts, walking just nine during this span while giving up only 36 hits in 46 1/3 innings. However, the right-hander doesn’t have a win to show for his efforts during this stretch. Cain is 6-2 with a 2.28 ERA at AT&T Park this season. He’s 5-2 with a 2.04 ERA when pitching during the day. He’s also 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts versus Colorado this season. Cain usually goes deep into his games, too. He has pitched at least seven innings in all eight of his starts since the All-Star Game.

The Under is 15-5 the last 20 times the Giants have been favored.

Key Injuries - Infielder Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) is on the DL.
Catcher Bengie Molina (quadriceps) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Total of the Day is in the "NFL Trends and Indexes - Preseason Week 3" thread today.

                        BACK TO EARTH

Atlanta handed Cliff Lee his first loss with Philadelphia, roughing up the Phillies' new ace in a 9-1 win. Lee (5-1) had been practically unhittable for the NL East-leading Phillies, entering with an ERA of 0.68 and having surrendered just 24 hits and held .175 average. Lee (5-1) was making his sixth start with Philadelphia since being traded from Cleveland on July 29. He left after giving up 10 hits and six runs in five innings.

                        HAPPY TRAILS

Luis Gonzalez announced his retirement as a player Saturday and joined the Arizona Diamondbacks as a special assistant in the front office. The most popular player in the franchise's 12-year history, "Gonzo'' will always be remembered for hitting the winning bloop single off New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series - still Arizona's only major sports championship.

                        GOT YOUR BACK

Jake Fox hit his first career grand slam and finished with a career-high five RBIs - all in his final two at-bats - to lead the Cubs to an 11-4 win over the New York Mets on Saturday after telling manager Lou Piniella that he'd come through.

                        THAT'S 20

Claudio Vargas pitched a scoreless inning for Milwaukee on Saturday night, helping the Brewers to their 20th straight win over the Pirates in Miller Park, beating Pittsburgh 7-3 on Saturday night. Vargas was the starter when Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh on May 4, 2007.

                        REMEMBER ME?

Seattle's Mike Sweeney hit a two-run double against Kansas City to spark the Mariners' four-run first inning on the way to an 8-4 win Saturday night. Sweeney played 13 seasons for the Royals.

                        CHEDDAR

Clay Buchholz's first batter of the game may have provided an indication that the Red Sox starter had good stuff: Jose Bautista ducked out of the way as a curveball broke over the plate for a called third strike. Buchholz went on to allow just three hits in 8 1-3 innings in Boston's 3-2 win over Toronto on Saturday night.

                        SPEAKING

"I watched Little League this morning and they played better. This is not major league ball. I'm getting a lot of money to manage this team, and I feel like I'm stealing money from Jerry Reinsdorf.'' - White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen after Chicago lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Sky at New York Liberty (-3.5, 146.5)

The bottom-feeding Liberty would love to play the role of spoiler during the final games of the WNBA season.

New York is in last place (11-17) and is coming off a loss to the Sky Friday. Chicago is fighting for its first-ever playoff berth, currently sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Sky have struggled without injured star center Sylvia Fowles but got a big boost from reserve Kristi Toliver, who scored 25 points off the bench in Friday’s win. Fowles’ status for Sunday is unknown.

New York could miss their starting center as well Sunday. Janel McCarville has missed the past two games for the Liberty due to a sprained left ankle. She puts up almost 13 points and grabs six rebounds per game this season.

                          Pick: Chicago

Connecticut Sun at Los Angeles Sparks (-4.5, 146)

The Los Angeles Sparks had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Phoenix Mercury Thursday night. However, they were missing one of their biggest stars.

Reigning MVP Candace Parker could not play due to “personal reasons” but told the media she would be in action against the Sun Sunday.

“I needed to be at home," she told reporters after practice Saturday. "I appreciate the Sparks' organization for understanding and for being there."

Parker was mired in a bit of a slump this season, following the birth of her first child. But in recent games, the forward was finding her form, averaging over 20 points in her past three contests. On the year, Parker is scoring just over 12 points per game.

                          Pick: Los Angeles
