    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, August 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants host the Rockies, the White Sox visit the Yankees, and the Patriots look for a preseason win down in Washington.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League has a pair of preseason games on tap for Friday, with Green Bay at Arizona and New England at Washington. The Patriots are pegged as 3-point road favorites in their matchup, after falling 7-6 to the Bengals in an uninspired game last time out. Tom Brady went 4-of-8 for 57 yards passing in that defeat. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 3-point home favorites against the Packers on Friday; Arizona was beaten 17-6 by the Chargers in their last outing.

As well, the Canadian Football League offers up Calgary at Toronto on Friday night, with the Stampeders listed as 7-point road favorites (and the total at 53.5). Calgary sits at 3-4 straight-up and 2-5 against-the-spread on the season, while the Argonauts have been struggling even more at 2-5 both SU and ATS this year.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Ubaldo Jimenez (12-9, 3.36 ERA) vs. Tim Lincecum (12-4, 2.43 ERA) on Friday night in a high-powered National League matchup between the Rockies and Giants. Righthander Jimenez has picked up the win in each of his last four starts, holding opponents to just seven earned runs over those 38 2-3 innings; Jimenez beat the Giants last Sunday. Righthander Lincecum was beaten by the Rockies in that Sunday matchup, allowing three earned runs over seven innings.

Also on the Senior Circuit slate for Friday: San Diego at Florida, the Mets at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, Washington at St. Louis, Houston at Arizona, and Atlanta at Philadelphia. The Braves will go with Tommy Hanson (9-2, 3.12 ERA) on Friday; righthander Hanson has won each of his last four starts. Pedro Martinez (2-0, 5.14 ERA) counters for the Phillies; righthander Martinez has allowed eight earned runs over 14 innings this season.

Josh Beckett (14-5, 3.65 ERA) seeks his 15th win of the season on Friday night as the Red Sox host the Blue Jays and Scott Richmond (6-7, 4.09 ERA). Righthander Beckett is coming off a terrible outing against the Yankees in which he was pounded for eight earned runs (and five home runs) over eight innings of work. Righthander Richmond was beaten by the Angels in his last start (four earned runs in seven innings), and Toronto is winless in his last four mound trips.

Rounding out the AL schedule for Friday: Cleveland at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at Detroit, Texas at Minnesota, Oakland at the Angels, Kansas City at Seattle, and the White Sox at the Yankees. Probable Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (11-7, 3.92 ERA) will be seeking his first victory since his perfect July 23 outing; Chicago is 1-5 in his last six starts. CC Sabathia (15-7, 3.59 ERA) has won five starts in a row, and the Yankees have picked up the victory in eight of his last 10.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's schedule for Friday, with Sacramento at Minnesota and New York at Chicago. The Liberty and Sky faced off back on August 17, with Chicago pulling out an 88-77 road victory. Sylvia Fowles (day-to-day with an ankle injury) had 22 points for the Sky in that win, while Shameka Christon tossed in 25 points for the Liberty. Chicago is 13-15 SU and 11-17 ATS on the season, and New York sits at 11-16 SU and 11-14-2 ATS.

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Federer to win the U.S. Open? Roger that

Roger Federer (even) is the No. 1 seed and has won the U.S. Open the past five years. Rafael Nadal, who is seeded No. 3, is the biggest threat to Federer, but found out at Thursday’s draw he could only possibly face him in the finals. Nadal (+700) has never made it past the semis at Flushing Meadows and hasn’t played in two months with tendinitis in both knees. Roger should run away with it.

San Jose doesn’t know the way

The Earthquakes aren’t the worst road team in the MLS – they’re the second-worst, with an away mark of 0-7-2. San Jose (+395) is a huge underdog in New England on Saturday and should be: The Revolution (-153) have a 5-2-3 home record, won their most recent home game over Chivas USA, 3-1, and beat the Earthquakes earlier this year, 1-0. Viva la Revolution.

      Packing in the points

Green Bay has a history of scoring tons of points in the preseason. The cheese heads have topped the number in seven of nine preseason games since the 2007-2008 season. Think 41 is a big number to surpass with the Cardinals on tap for Friday night? Think again. Green Bay is rebuilding into a 3-4 defense and the Cardinals are leaving their starters in the game through the third quarter. The scoreboard operator should be in mid-season shape.

      The Rockies can’t tap anything

Colorado has a dirty secret: the team can’t consistently score runs the past two weeks. The under is 6-3-1 in the Rockies past 10 games. If you take out a 14-11 win over the Giants, the team is averaging a meager 3.7 runs per game. Add in San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum and Rockies streaking hurler Ubaldo Jimenez on Friday, there seems very little chance the teams will be able to top the over/under of 6.5 runs.

      New Jersey gets Spanish flair

Sergio Garcia finally looks ready to win a tournament. Garcia is tied for the lead at 6-under par at The Barclays in Jersey City. The Spaniard has just two Top-10 finishes this year, but came in fourth at the Wyndham Championship last week and is playing his best golf of the season. He’s won the event twice and is a legit threat to claim the hat trick.

        Six-pack for Friday

Notes about teams the year after they lose the Super Bowl

-- Since 2002, the team that lost LY's Super Bowl is 1-8-1 against the spread when favored by 10 or more points.

-- Since '00, those same teams are 23-43-1 as single digit favorites.

-- Super Bowl losers are 10-19-1 vs spread as a favorite of three points or less, over the last nine years.

        -- Since 2000, they're 10-19-1 vs spread in game following a win.

-- One area they excel in: Super Bowl losers are 22-15-1 vs spread in a game following a loss- thats since 2004.

-- Since 2000, Super Bowl losers are 28-53-2 vs spread as a favorite.

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13......

        13) Mariners-- Have allowed one more run than Texas, but played one more game. Wakamatsu has done excellent job in first year as manager.

        12) Marlins-- Good race between Nationals (magic #8), Orioles (9) for right to be the first team officially eliminated from playoff contention.

        11) Tigers-- I've seen them play 8-10 games this season, and they've been awful in most of those games, but they're in first place in a division that lacks any real strong teams. Leyland is crafty, will be tough in October.

        10) Rangers-- They must really dislike Vicente Padilla, who signed with the Dodgers and pitched well in Colorado Thursday. Who gives away a decent starting pitcher in this day and age?

        9) Giants-- Benjie Molina came hobbling off the bench Wednesday and hit a dramatic homer to help Giants beat Arizona. Kirk Gibson is coach for the Diamondbacks, and it was a slightly Gibson-like moment.

        8) Rays-- They've given away too many road games this season. They needed Billy Wagner more than the Red Sox do.

        7) Rockies-- Easy to forget they were in the World Series two years ago, so their core players have played in lot of big games.

        6) Red Sox-- Ortiz is heating up, but they need Matsuzaka to give them a little something in September for the $9M he's making this season- the pitching needs depth in the rotation.

        5) Angels-- Would have grabbed Wagner if Red Sox hadn't. Were they the team that claimed Trevor Hoffman off waivers Thursday?

        4) Dodgers-- Won in Colorado the last two days to get their lead back up to four games, after a 15.5-game lead had been melted down to just two.

        3) Cardinals-- Carpenter/Wainwright are potent 1-2 combo in rotation, and Pujols/Holliday are same on offense. This is a dangerous team.

        2) Phillies-- Pirates drew 24,470 for game with Phillies Thursday night; Dallas Cowboys drew over 26,000 for a practice session.

        1) Bronx Bombers-- Sure they have some problems, but all the 31 other teams would gladly trade their problems for the Bombers' problems.

          SCOREBOARD

          Friday, August 28

Colorado at San Francisco (10:15 p.m. EDT). Giants ace Tim Lincecum and Ubaldo Jimenez face off again in the opener of a three-game series between the NL West rivals. Jimenez beat Lincecum with eight strong innings in a 4-2 win Sunday.

          STARS

          Thursday

-Andy Marte, Indians, hit a two-run homer on a full-count pitch with two outs in the ninth inning, giving Cleveland a 5-4 victory over Baltimore.

-Garrett Jones, Pirates, hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help Pittsburgh rally for a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia.

-Ian Kinsler, Rangers, homered twice, and Texas became the first visitor to win a series at Yankee Stadium since mid-June, beating New York 7-2.

-Matt Kemp, Dodgers, hit his career-high 19th homer and Los Angeles beat Colorado 3-2.

-Jeff Keppinger, Astros, hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lead Houston to a 4-3 victory at St. Louis.

-Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn, Nationals, each homered to power Washington past the Chicago Cubs 5-4 at Wrigley Field.

          INFIELDER IS A PITCHER

Red Sox infielder Nick Green pitched two scoreless innings for Boston in a 9-5 loss to the White Sox. Green, who started 78 games at shortstop this season, threw 90 mph fastballs on his first two pitches and walked three in two hitless innings. His last pitch was an 88 mph fastball.

          WELCOME BACK

Mark Reynolds homered and drove in two runs in his return to Arizona's lineup in an 11-0 win over the Giants. Reynolds missed Arizona's three previous games with the flu and received an IV treatment in San Francisco on Tuesday. The veteran slugger didn't play in the first two games of the series against the Giants but returned Thursday to lead the Diamondbacks to their third-highest run total since the All-Star break.

          HIT IT

Through 7 1/2 innings of the Rangers' 7-2 lead over the Yankees, only 33 of 66 batters overall managed to put the ball in play. By the end, the teams combined for 25 strikeouts and 11 walks. A.J. Burnett struck out a season-high 12 in six innings. Texas' Dustin Nippert was pulled after walking seven in 3 2-3 innings.

          HALO HALL

Chuck Finley and Brian Downing, teammates on the Angels' 1986 AL West championship team, were inducted into the franchise's Hall of Fame. Finley spent his first 14 seasons with the Angels, going 165-140 with a 3.72 ERA, 57 complete games and 14 shutouts. Downing hit .271 with 222 homers and 846 RBIs in 1,661 games over 13 seasons with the Angels.

          OUCH

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury sustained a high sprain of his left ankle in the bottom of the fifth inning of Boston's 9-5 loss to the White Sox sliding into home as he tried to score from second base on a wild pitch. Manager Terry Francona said the injury doesn't appear to be serious.

          LEGAL TROUBLE

Dodgers relief pitcher Ronald Belisario pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving. He was arrested in Pasadena early on June 27 after California Highway Patrol officers said they saw him talking on his cell phone while driving and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was released on $5,000 bail. The 26-year-old rookie right-hander is with the team in Colorado and did not appear in court.

          LITTLE SUPPORT

Less than 5,000 spectators turned out for the Mets 10-3 win at the Marlins, but there were enough transplanted New Yorkers to muster an occasional chant of "Let's go Mets.''

          HUDSON STARTS

Braves pitcher Tim Hudson will make his first big league appearance in more than a year on Monday, replacing Kenshin Kawakami for a start against the Florida Marlins. Hudson was the ace of the Atlanta staff before his season-ending elbow ligament-replacement surgery on Aug. 8, 2008.

          DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

The Cubs have gone 6-15 since Aug. 5 to fall nine games behind St. Louis in the NL Central. Before that skid, they had won 14 of 19 and were tied for first place. The Nationals are 20-21 under interim manager Jim Riggleman after going 26-61 for Manny Acta, who was fired last month. They are 14-11 in August.

          BAD BREAK

Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan is expected to miss the rest of the season after breaking a bone in his left hand while sliding headfirst into third base during their 5-4 victory over the Cubs. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Morgan broke the second metacarpal bone and will fly back to Washington to visit a hand specialist. Rizzo called it a "six-week injury.''

          POWER SURGE

Yuniesky Betancourt, Brayan Pena, Alberto Callaspo and David DeJesus homered for the Royals in their first four-homer game this season, an 8-4 win over the Mariners. The last time they hit four was May 23, 2007, against Cleveland.

          SPEAKING

"I didn't really want to do it, but because of the situation today I had to do it. When he told me Manny (Delcarmen) was going to work two, Ramon (Ramirez) one, I said, `I'm going in in the eighth inning? Who's going to pitch the ninth?''' - Red Sox shortstop Nick Green after pitching two hitless innings in a 9-5 loss to the White Sox. Green reached 90 mph with his fastball.

2003 - Eric Gagne set a major league record with his 44th straight save this season as Los Angeles beat Houston 6-3. Gagne eclipsed Tom Gordon's 1998 record of 43 in a row to begin a season. Gagne has 52 consecutive saves, two short of tying Gordon's record of 54.

2008 - Cristian Guzman of the Nationals became the second player to hit for the cycle since the franchise moved to Washington, driving in three in an 11-2 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This Day in Baseball

On August 28 in Baseball History...

1884 - Mickey Welch of the New York Gothams sets the all-time major league record by fanning the first nine Philadelphia batters he faces. Welch wins 39 games this year and in just 13 seasons will win 307.

1921 - Babe Ruth starts a record streak in which he gets at least one extra-base hit in nine straight games.

1926 - Dutch Levsen of the Cleveland Indians pitched two complete-game victories over the Boston Red Sox, 6-1 and 5-1. He did not strike out a batter in either game. The Indians used the identical lineup in both games.

1932 - The Red Sox eclipse the Indians in the second game of a doubleheader 4-3 in 11 innings. The game was previously scheduled for August 31, but a solar eclipse was due and blackened the ballpark for twenty minutes, so the game is played today instead.

1938 - On Connie Mack Day at Shibe Park, the A's win a doubleheader from the White Sox, setting a league record by playing their seventh successive twinbill in eight days.

1950 - Earle and Roy Mack, Connie's sons by his first marriage, purchase 54 percent interest in the Athletics from Connie Mack, Jr., their younger brother from a second marriage. Earle, Roy and Connie Mack now own the club outright.

1951 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Giants 2-0, snapping the Giants' 16-game winning streak. The streak enabled the Giants to cut the Dodgers 13 1/2-game lead to six.

1967 - Boston signs free-agent outfielder Ken Harrelson. Harrelson reportedly receives a $75,000 bonus and salary package for 1967 and 1968. He will finish the year with 40 home runs to become the first second baseman since Rogers Hornsby in 1925 to lead the league in that category.

1992 - The Milwaukee Brewers set an American League record with 31 hits and 26 singles in a 22-2 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Chicago Cubs (-220, N/A)

If the Cubbies can’t gain ground on the division-leading Cardinals playing against the Mets and Nationals, they might as well throw in the towel.

The underachieving Baby Bears wouldn’t concede the playoffs following their 15-6 loss to Washington on Tuesday.

“I don’t think anybody’s packing it in. I don’t see that,” Chicago manager Lou Piniella told the Chicago Sun-Times afterwards. “Remember these teams are getting paid to play, too. We’re not playing a beer-league team from across town. We’re playing a professional team that’s got professional players, and they’re getting paid to play and beat you, too.”

Thanks for clearing that up, Lou.

Luckily for Cubs backers, there are a number of circumstances that make Friday’s matchup with the Mets an attractive situation.

Chicago is 22-6 in Ted Lilly’s last 28 home starts, while the Mets are 3-12 in their last 15 games going against a left-handed starter.

                  Pick: Cubs -220

Los Angeles Dodgers at Cincinnati Reds (+167, 9)

Of all the moves Ned Colletti has made as the Dodgers GM, the best may have been the move he didn’t make.

Young outfielders Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier were constantly coming up in trade talk, but Colletti held firm and stuck with his prospects. The front office has been rewarded with the patience.

Sure, Manny Ramirez gets all the headlines, but Kemp and Ethier are the heavy lifters in the Dodger lineup. Kemp is among the best two-hole hitters and no player in the majors has delivered more late-inning theatrics than Either.

“Two or three years ago, I was not only fighting to help the team win but also to keep my job,” the right fielder told the Los Angeles Times after hitting his 26th and 27th home runs Wednesday night. “When people show more confidence and belief in you, you can be enhanced by that.”

Expect more good things from the franchise’s cornerstone players along with another Dodger win Friday night.

                  Pick: Dodgers -175

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Ubaldo Jimenez (12-9, 3.36 ERA), Colorado Rockies

This righty is one of many Colorado players who have been playing outstanding during the club’s hot streak. Jimenez bested Tim Linecum in his last outing, allowing just two runs in eight innings of work.

It was the third consecutive start he pitched eight innings and pushed his six-inning start streak to 22 games.

He’s 5-0, owns 34-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio along with a 1.63 ERA in the month of August. The under is also 8-2 in his last 10 trips to the mound.

                    C.C. Sabathia (15-7, 3.59), New York Yankees

Here’s another pitcher who’s enjoying the late summer. Sabathia is 5-0 with a 39-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 2.65 ERA in his last five starts. The boom pushes his record in August to 20-2 since 2005.

He delivered two peak performances against the Red Sox helping his club build its lead in the AL East.

The big lefty doesn’t come cheap for N.Y. backers, especially at Yankee Stadium. Still, pinstripe supporters have cashed out in seven of Sabathia’s last eight starts.

                    Slumping

Josh Beckett (14-5, 3.65), Boston Red Sox

The flame-throwing righty was one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball this season, but in his last two starts he has given up 15 earned runs.

The big fly is the root problem. The former World Series MVP has been taken out of the park 10 times in his last three outings.

The Yanks clubbed out five big flies in Beckett’s last start.

“These are humbling deals,” the hurler told reporters after the game. “That was a whupping I got today. That’s the only words I’ve got to sum it up.”

Under bettors are also taking a whooping with Beckett toeing the rubber. The under is 0-3 in his last three starts.

Mark Buehrle (11-7, 3.92), Chicago White Sox

It’s been over a month since this lefty threw a perfect game. Things aren’t going so well for Buehrle since that magical day. He carries a 6.22 ERA over his last six starts and his team is just 1-5 in those contests.

“I’m making some pitches and they’re finding some holes and then when you make a mistake they’re hitting the ball hard,” Buehrle said after his latest setback. “It’s just one of those funks I’m in and I need to come out of it sooner than later.”

Fading the 30 year old until he returns to form might be the best strategy.

Back to the futures: Reviewing World Series odds
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only a month to go in the Major League Baseball season, take a look at this year's likeliest candidates for a World Series title:

                        New York Yankees +200

The Bronx Bombers have lived up to that nickname this season. New York features only two players hitting over .290 (Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano), but is second in the Majors in runs because it has hit the most home runs in baseball.

The Yankees struggled without Alex Rodriguez at the beginning of the season, losing 15 of their first 28 games. Though A-Rod is having an off season by his lofty standards, the protection he provides others in the lineup has helped the Yankees go 66-32 since his return. Ace C.C. Sabathia makes the Yankees even tougher to beat in a short playoff series.

                        Philadelphia Phillies +400

The defending World Series champions got even stronger at the deadline with the addition of Cliff Lee. Lee, last year's AL Cy Young winner, has gone 5-0 with a 0.58 ERA since joining the Phils. He's even hit for a .312 average in those games. Surprising rookie J.A. Happ (10-2, 2.59 ERA) and last year's NLCS and World Series MVP Cole Hamels join Lee to give Phillies the best left-handed starting trio in baseball.

Philadelphia is the most balanced of the top six teams in the majors, ranking fourth in runs per game and seventh in team ERA. The club's biggest cause for concern is closer Brad Lidge (0-6, 7.33 ERA, nine blown saves). The Phillies are 4-1 versus the Cardinals this season, but have lost four of seven against the Dodgers.

                        Los Angeles Dodgers +400

The Dodgers won 40 of their first 60 games this season, but have since gone 35-32. Part of their slowdown could be attributed to the 50-game suspension of Manny Ramirez (use of banned substance). But Ramirez hasn't exactly set the world on fire since his return, batting .265 with four homers and 17 RBI since the All-Star break.

If Manny isn't Manny in the playoffs, L.A. will struggle to generate offence. The Dodgers have gone over the total only once in their past nine games. Fortunately for Los Angeles, its pitching should keep the team in games. The Dodgers staff has the lowest WHIP and second-lowest ERA in baseball.

                        St. Louis Cardinals +500

Pitching is also the strength of the Cardinals, who have the third-lowest team ERA in the majors. Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter head up the rotation, while Joel Pineiro has also been excellent this year. If pitching coach Dave Duncan's latest reclamation project, John Smoltz, can turn his season around, St. Louis will be even more dangerous.

The Cardinals offence, even with all-world slugger Albert Pujols, could be the team's Achilles’ heel. St. Louis ranks 20th in baseball with 4.45 runs per game. The midseason addition of Matt Holliday has certainly helped. St. Louis is 22-8 since acquiring the outfielder from the Oakland A's.

                        Boston Red Sox +600

Boston is perceived as one of the top teams in baseball, but the Red Sox have been a pedestrian 18-19 since July 17. The club's pitching depth, considered a strength at the beginning of the season, has thinned dramatically. The John Smoltz experiment didn't work out, Brad Penny has struggled over the past month and Daisuke Matsuzaka has been injured all year.

Boston's offence has helped overcome some of those pitching deficiencies. Despite a down season from David Ortiz, the Red Sox still rank third in the majors in runs and fifth in homers. Boston lost four of six matchups with the Angels this season, all played in Anaheim. The Red Sox still own a 9-6 edge on the Yankees this year but lost six of the last seven showdowns.

                        Los Angeles Angels +700

This year's Angels squad looks nothing like manager Mike Scioscia's teams of the past. Scioscia, a former catcher, has always emphasized pitching and defense. But it's the Angels' bats that have carried them to a 46-21 record over their past 67 games.

The Halos' top-ranked offence is masking the struggles of their pitching staff. Los Angeles has the 27th-ranked team ERA in the majors and its bullpen is ranked 28th. Jered Weaver has a 5.50 ERA this month, Joe Saunders has been ineffective and Kelvim Escobar is out for the season. If good pitching stops good hitting, the Angels could be in trouble in the playoffs.

                        Other notables:

                        Colorado Rockies +1500
                        Detroit Tigers +1600
                        Texas Rangers +1800
                        San Francisco Giants +2000
                        Chicago White Sox +2000
