          Thursday, August 27

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Thursday's NFL preseason action
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles (-7.5, 37 )

          Matchup stats and trends

          Starter/injury Report

With Michael Vick set to make his Eagles debut, the Jaguars will be flying under the radar in this matchup.

Former Viking Troy Williamson is the league leading in receiving yardage this preseason and veteran Torry Holt is manning the other starting wideout spot.

The offensive line is still a work in progress with as many as three starting spots up for grabs heading into the regular season.

Since this is the Jags third game in 11 days, Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio won't extend his starters as much as most squads will this week. The first-team units are expected to exit the game after the first half.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid said that Vick will mix in with his starting offense during the first three quarters of the game.

Philadelphia is healing up after getting banged up in training camp. No.2 quarterback Kevin Kolb will return to action and finish up in the fourth quarter against the Jaguars. Also, running back Brian Westbrook is expected to make his first preseason appearance after some offseason surgeries. Still, two starting offensive linemen are unlikely to get on the field this week.

          Line movement

The Eagles opened as a touchdown favorite with a total of 38. Philadelphia is now a 7.5-point favorite while the total is down to 37.5.

          Trends

Del Rio is 17-9 (15-10-1 ATS) in his preseason coaching career while Reid is just 14-28 (19-23 ATS) in exhibition action with the Eagles.

          Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 81 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain in Philadelphia.

St. Louis Rams at Cincinnati Bengals (-2.5, 35)

          Matchup stats and trends

          Starter/injury report

Neither team is expected to have its top signal caller on the field on Thursday. Marc Bulger of the Rams and Carson Palmer of the Bengals should return to action next week.

New head coach Steve Spagnuolo is trying to get his banged up run defense on track after it allowed 5.6 yards per rush to the Falcons last week. Defensive linemen Leonard Little and Adam Carriker are unlikely to play against Cincinnati.

With Bulger out, Kyle Boller (12-of-25 passing in preseason) will run the first-team offense for St. Louis. The Rams will be without starting wide receiver Donnie Avery. Spagnuolo has said that his starters will play at least through the first half.

The Bengals (sixth in NFL in total offense during preseason) have moved the ball in their two exhibition outings, but are dead last in scoring offense.

While Boller has struggled in his backup role in St. Louis, J.T. O' Sullivan has been sharp for the Bengals. He has a 136.3 QB rating this August. Head coach Marvin Lewis has indicated that O' Sullivan will start on Thursday and that Jordan Palmer would garner more playing time this week as the No.2 quarterback.

Wake Forest rookie Sam Swank will handle the kicking duties this week for the injured Shayne Graham.

          Line movement

The Bengals opened as a field goal choice in the matchup the total set at 35. Cincinnati is now a 2.5-point favorite in the game.

          Trends

Lewis is 13-13 (14-11-1 ATS) in his preseason coaching career.

          Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 82 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain in Cincinnati.

Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5, 35)

          Matchup stats and trends

          Starter/injury report

Miami head coach Tony Sparano will go with starting quarterback Chad Pennington through the first offensive series of the third quarter against the Bucs. Chad Henne is expected to finish the game under center on Thursday. Rookie Pat White is unlikely to play this week after some struggles in his first two exhibition contests.

The Dolphins will also continue to evaluate their two candidates for the starting kicking spot. It appears that incumbent kicker Dan Carpenter is going to hold off former Chiefs kicker Connor Barth for the starting spot.

Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris has delayed his starting quarterback decision for another week after a strong effort by Luke McCown in last week's win at Jacksonville. Now, the job could be won by default. The Bucs are reportedly shopping McCown and Byron Leftwich to other teams to gauge their trade value.

Leftwich will start against the Dolphins and will play into the second quarter before McCown enters the game. Morris said that both quarterbacks will gain the same amount of playing time with the first-team offense against Miami. Carnell "Cadillac" Williams will make his preseason debut as the starting running back but top receiver Antonio Bryant is still out of action until the regular season.

          Line movement

The Bucs opened as a 2.5-point favorite with the total set at 35. The opening numbers have held steady.

          Trends

Since losing his preseason debut a year ago, Sparano has reeled off five straight victories in exhibition action.

          Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 89 degrees with a 50 percent chance of rain in Tampa.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles [7:00 PM ET]

Jaguars: The Jaguars are 0-2 in preseason, but they entered this season having won 17 of 24 preseason games under Jack Del Rio. This is the most points they are taking in a preseason game since Del Rio became head coach in 2003. Normally the Jaguars would like to play their starters into the third quarter since is their third preseason game. However, that plan probably is going to be altered because this also marks Jacksonville’s third game in 11 days. The Jaguars have never specifically game-planned during the preseason under Del Rio. Jacksonville lost 24-23 to Tampa Bay at home on Saturday. The Jaguars were just 3-for-14 on third downs in the loss, but David Garrard was 10-of-16 passing for 216 yards and wide receiver Troy Williamson finished with 147 receiving yards. Garrard was 4-of-7 for just 22 yards in a 12-9 Game 1 loss to the Dolphins in Miami.

The Jaguars are 16-9-1 ATS under Jack Del Rio in preseason.

Key Injuries - Cornerback Sheldon Brown (ribs) and linebacker Omar Gaither (knee) are out.
Wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (ankle) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 14

Eagles (-7.5, O/U 37): Michael Vick is expected to see action. The last time he played was Dec. 31, 2006 against the Eagles as a member of the Falcons. Speculation has the Eagles using Vick at several different positions, including quarterback where he is listed on the depth chart behind Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb and A.J. Feeley. Kolb could play after missing the Eagles’ first two preseason games because of a knee sprain. He returned to practice this week. Also expected to play for the first time this season are star tailback Brian Westbrook and defensive end Trent Cole, the team’s best pass rusher. The Eagles expect to have three-fifth of their starting offensive line healthy for this matchup with only right tackle Shawn Andrews and left guard Todd Herremans not expected to suit up. Eagles coach Andy Reid has said he will play his starters for three quarters.

The Eagles are 8-2 to the over in their last 10 preseason games.

Key Injuries - Offensive tackle Shawn Andrews (back) is doubtful.
Defensive end Darren Howard (groin) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 23 (Side of the Day)

Miami Dolphis at Tampa Bay Buccaneers [FOX | 8:00 PM ET]

Dolphins: Game 3 in preseason is often a team’s dress rehearsal and that’s the case with the Dolphins. Miami coach Tony Sparano said starting quarterback Chad Pennington will play through midway in the third quarter and Miami’s starting offensive line will go three quarters. Second-string quarterback Chad Henne will play the rest of the game once Pennington leaves. The Dolphins rushed 28 times for 141 yards - a 5.0 yard per carry average - during a 27-17 win against Carolina last week. Miami’s top four running backs are all expected to see action – Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs and Lex Hilliard. Pennington was 8-for-11 in the victory for 105 yards with a touchdown pass. Miami is 14-9 lifetime versus Tampa Bay in its preseason series. Tampa Bay beat Miami, 17-6, last year in preseason. The teams face each other during the regular season on Nov. 15.

The Dolphins are 7-2-1 to the under in their last 10 preseason games.

Key Injuries - Defensive end Matt Roth (groin) is doubtful.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Buccaneers (-2.5, O/U 36): The big news for the Buccaneers in this matchup is the quarterback battle between Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown for the No. 1 spot, along with running back Cadillac Williams getting the start. Williams has had two major knee surgeries in his career. This will be his first appearance of the season. He’ll be the lead back for the first two series. The next back in the rotation – either Derrick Ward or Earnest Graham – also will get two series as the lead back followed by the third one. Graham should play after missing last week’s 24-23 win against Jacksonville because of an ankle injury. Leftwich is slated to play 1 ½ quarters as the starter followed by McCown, who also is expected to go about 1 ½ quarters. Leftwich started last week and went 6-for-12 passing for 63 yards, while McCown was 6-of-9 for 51 yards and two touchdown passes.

The Buccaneers are 7-3 to the over in their last 10 preseason contests.

Key Injuries - Wide receiver Antonio Bryant (hamstring), wide receiver Michael Clayton (hamstring) and kicker Matt Bryant (hamstring) are all out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 19 (OVER - Total of the Day)

New England Patriots at Washington Redskins [CBS | 8:00 PM ET]

Patriots (-3.5, O/U 37.5): All eyes remain on Tom Brady as he comes back from serious knee surgery. Brady is 14-of-23 for 157 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the Patriots’ two preseason games. “This week will be a really important step for us,” Brady said. “We’ll really get a good idea of where we’re at as a team after this game.” Brady and the Patriots are expected to attack Washington with four and five receiver sets targeting their two biggest threats, Randy Moss and Wes Welker. The Patriots also are expected to test the Redskins with running backs, Fred Taylor and Lawrence Maroney. The Patriots want to show more offense after losing last week at home to Cincinnati, 7-6. New England’s starting defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown during its opponent’s last nine possessions. The Patriots are expected to game plan, too, on defense utilizing both a 4-3 and 3-4 defense.

The Patriots are 26-16 to the under in their last 42 preseason games with Bill Belichick as the coach.

Key Injuries - Running backs Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk are doubtful and cornerback Shawn Spring is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 21 (Side of the Day)

Redskins: Redskins coach Jim Zorn said he plans on playing his starters for at least two quarters. It may turn out to be more if Washington’s offense doesn’t look much improved. The Redskins have yet to produce a touchdown in two preseason games with their first-string offense. Quarterback Jason Campbell has looked terrible. He was 1-for-7 for 10 yards in last week’s 17-10 victory against Pittsburgh. The Redskins were shut out in their first preseason game, 23-0, by Baltimore. Campbell was 3-for-6 in that game for 38 yards. The Redskins are averaging just 250 yards of total offense in their two preseason games. Campbell could be in danger of losing his starting spot to veteran Todd Collins. Rookie Chase Daniel is chasing Colt Brennan for the No. 3 quarterback position after throwing two touchdown passes in the victory against Pittsburgh. Cornerback Carlos Rogers (calf) won’t play.

The Redskins have gone under in 5 of their seven preseason games under Jim Zorn.

Key Injuries - Cornerback Carlos Rogers is out.
Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and wide receiver Santana Moss are questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Green Bay Packers at Arizona Cardinals [10:00 PM ET]

Packers: Green Bay has looked sharp in posting preseason home victories against Cleveland 17-10 and Buffalo 31-21. This is the Packers’ first road game, though, and it’s a 9 p.m. Green Bay start time. Aaron Rodgers has led Green Bay’s first-string offense to touchdowns in five of six possessions, going 13-for-19 passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Rodgers is expected to play at least the first half and possibly into the third quarter where he will be replaced by Brian Brohm. Second-string quarterback Matt Flynn is not likely to see any action because of a right shoulder injury. Brohm has struggled for the second straight season and the former No. 2 draft pick is in danger of being cut. The Packers are breaking in new starters at center, right guard and right tackle. Their defense is making the transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4.

The Packers have covered their past 4 preseason games.

Key Injuries - Linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring) is out.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 20

Cardinals (-3.5, O/U 41): The high-scoring Cardinals offense has managed to average just eight points during two preseason games. Their first-string offense, featuring quarterback Kurt Warner, has yet to produce a touchdown. The Cardinals hope to change that by using this game as their dress rehearsal. They plan to play their starters at least one half, if not into the third quarter. The Cardinals are 0-2 having lost to Pittsburgh 20-10 and to San Diego, 17-6. Rookie running back Chris Wells could see his first action, after missing the first two preseason games because of an ankle injury. However, Arizona isn’t likely to have its No. 2 and No. 3 wideouts as Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston aren’t expected to play because of injuries. The Cardinals’ first-string defense hasn’t yielded a point in two quarters of play. The Cardinals’ secondary appears much improved after surrendering a league-worst 36 touchdown passes last season.

The Cardinals are 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS in preseason under Ken Whisenhunt.

Key Injuries - Wide receivers Anquan Boldin (hamstring) and Steve Breaston (knee) are doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 24 (OVER - Total of the Day)

What bettors need to know: Friday's NFL preseason action
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New England Patriots at Washington Redskins (+3.5, 37.5)

                  Starter/injury Report

The Redskins will be without several big-name starters due to injuries.

Cornerback Carlos Rodgers will not play because of a lingering calf injury and will be replaced in the starting lineup by Fred Smoot.

Running back/kick returner Rock Cartwright is still suffering from a groin injury that has plagued him most of training camp, and isn’t expected to play. Devin Thomas, a second-year pro who returned kicks at Michigan State, will replace Cartwright on special teams.

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and wide receiver Santana Moss are both listed as questionable and will be game-time decisions.

The first-team offense continues to be a big concern for the Skins. The unit has yet to score a touchdown through two preseason games and quarterback Jason Campbell has looked particularly awful. He was just 1-of-7 for 10 yards in last week’s 17-13 win over Pittsburgh.

Zorn said the plan is to play the first-unit as long as it takes for them to find a consistent rhythm.

Chase Daniel and Colt Brennan, who are in a heated battle for third-string quarterback, will come in after Campbell.

The Patriots have gone into regular season mode and are expected to have close to their full complement of players, according to head coach Bill Belichick. He said his players are “getting used to the scouting report…the different ways we break down our opponents and get into more of a weekly preparations schedule, as opposed to a training camp practice routine.”

Tight end Ben Watson, who had been out with an undisclosed injury, returned to practice this week and is expected to play.

                  Line movement

The Patriots have remained 3.5-point road favorites at Legends.com and the total has dipped slightly from 38 to 37.5.

                  Trends

The Redskins are 3-4 ATS and the over/under is 2-5 in preseason games under Jim Zorn. The Patriots are 19-17-3 ATS in the preseason and their over/under record is 16-26 with Belichick on the sidelines.

Green Bay Packers at Arizona Cardinals (-3, 42.5)

                  Starter/injury report

It’s been a near picture-perfect preseason so far for the undefeated Packers and the news on the injury front is limited. The biggest question mark surrounds backup quarterback Matt Flynn. The second-year signal caller suffered a bruised shoulder in the Packers win over Buffalo last week and is listed as questionable.

Starter Aaron Rodgers is expected to play the entire first half and if Flynn is unable to go, Brian Brohm will take over under center.

The Packers defense, which seems to be adjusting well to the 3-4 scheme installed by new defensive coordinator Dom Capers, could gain the services of linebacker Nick Barnett for the first time this preseason. Barnett returned to the practice field this week for the first time since having ACL surgery last November.

The Packers will be without first-round rookie pass rusher Clay Mathews (hamstring) and defensive tackle Justin Harrel also appears unlikely to play.

The high-octane offense that led the Cardinals to last year’s NFC championship has been M.I.A so far this August. The Cardinals have just 16 points and one touchdown so far and the first-team offense has yet to reach the end zone.

The Cardinals offense is trying to get on track possibly without the services of a pair of productive receivers. Anquan Boldin is questionable (hamstring pull) and Steve Breaston also might not play because of a knee injury.

Arizona first-round pick Beanie Wells is expected to make his long-awaited debut after showing no ill effects from an injured ankle this week at practice. Reports out of Arizona have described the running back’s performance this week at practice as “explosive.”

                  Line movement

The Cards opened as 3-point favorites and have been bet to -3.5 at Legends.com. The over/under opened at 42 and has been bet down to 41 points.

                  Trends

The Cardinals are 3-7 ATS in preseason games under Ken Whisenhunt with a 5-5 over/under mark. The Packers have gone 7-7 ATS under Mike McCarthy and the over/under is 10-4.

What bettors need to know: Saturday's NFL preseason action
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indianapolis Colts at Detroit Lions (+3, 40)

The Colts (4-16 in last 20 preseason games) are expected to go with their starters until early in the third quarter Saturday. It appears that Curtis Painter will be the backup at QB. Veteran backup Jim Sorgi has returned to practice but will likely be held out until next week.

Among the other key players who aren't expected to play against the Lions are OL Ryan Lilja, DB Kelvin Hayden, DB Bob Sanders and K Adam Vinatieri.

While the starting QB spot is still open in Detroit, Daunte Culpepper (83.0 QB rating) will open the game under center against the Colts. Matthew Stafford (43.4 QB rating) will also play with first-team personnel. Each QB will play a quarter and a half.

On the injury front, RB Kevin Smith and both starting cornerbacks are questionable to play against the Colts.

New Orleans Saints at Oakland Raiders (+2.5, 41)

The Saints are expected to play their starters until early in the third quarter against the Raiders.

New Orleans is a little banged up in the backfield. Pierre Thomas could be out until the start of the regular season while Reggie Bush is questionable to play Saturday.

Oakland head coach Tom Cable has indicated that his starters will play the first half and, possibly, into the third quarter against the Saints. With only one series under his belt this preseason, veteran QB Jeff Garcia is set to play most of the second half Saturday.

On defense, the Raiders are still looking to finalize starting spots at linebacker and cornerback as the regular season approaches.

Buffalo Bills at Pittsburgh Steelers (-6, 36)

Buffalo's no-huddle offense will be without Terrell Owens (toe) for the third straight game Saturday. The new offense will try to get their running game (2.9 yards per carry in preseason) on track against the Steelers.

Dick Jauron is expected to play his starters through the first half against Pittsburgh. Rookie DL Aaron Maybin is set to make his Bills debut in the contest.

After missing last week's game, Ben Roethlisberger is back in the fold for Pittsburgh. Head coach Mike Tomlin has said that his starters will play at least the first half against Buffalo.

Roethlisberger could be missing a couple of weapons in his return to action. Running back Willie Parker and WR Santonio Holmes are questionable for the game.

Tennessee Titans at Cleveland Browns (-1, 37.5)

Tennessee will play their starters through at least the first half Saturday.

The Titans will keep a close eye on their wide receivers against the Browns after Nate Washington's hamstring injury this week. He could miss the start of the regular season.

The Browns will mirror Detroit's gameplan in regards to their quarterbacks this week. Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn will get equal playing time with the first-team offense against Tennessee but head coach Eric Mangini hasn't decided on a starter for Saturday's matchup.

San Diego Chargers at Atlanta Falcons (-2.5, 42)

San Diego head coach Norv Turner has said that his starter could play up to three quarters Saturday. However, a couple of big offensive guns could be out of the lineup.

Turner is hesitant to expose RB LaDainian Tomlinson (12 carries, 28 yards in preseason) and TE Antonio Gates to the turf field surface at the Georgia Dome.

Atlanta's Mike Smith will also have his starters on the field into the third quarter Saturday. After missing last week's game, backup QB Chris Redman will return to action this week for the Falcons.

On defense, recent first-round choice Jamaal Anderson is trying to retain his starting spot on the defensive line heading into the regular season.

Seattle Seahawks at Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5, 39)

The Seahawks are expected to have their first-team units on the field through at least the first half against Kansas City. The game could mark the Seattle debut of the NFL's 11th all-time leading rusher, Edgerrin James.

The offensive line is a concern after last week's injury to starting center Chris Spencer (out 4-6 weeks) and the uncertain status of Walter Jones for the regular season.

Kansas City will go with their first-team offense until at least the first series of the third quarter. While QB Matt Cassel (92.9 QB rating in preseason) made some progress last week, RB Larry Johnson (2.8 yards per carry) is trying to bust loose in exhibition action.

On defense, the Chiefs are still looking for their starting nose tackle in their 3-4 defensive formation.

New York Jets at New York Giants (-3, 36)

With a tropical storm (70 percent chance of rain) heading to the Meadowlands on Saturday, Mark Sanchez could have something else to deal with besides the elite defensive line of the Giants. On a short week, Jets head coach Rex Ryan is unlikely to send Sanchez and his other starters out beyond the first half.

The Giants had hoped to use the traditional dress rehearsal for the regular season to further develop their inexperienced wideouts but the weather may alter those plans.

The defense will be without key veterans Antonio Pierce and Aaron Ross Saturday.

Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers (-3, 34.5)

With their third game in 10 days, Baltimore (second in NFL in total offense and defense in preseason) hasn't been able to install a complete gameplan for this week's matchup.

Special teams will be a focal point Saturday, with starting spots at kicker and kick returner still up for grabs.

Without any road games until the second week of the regular season, the Panthers can unpack for awhile. Head coach John Fox has indicated that his starters are likely to play at least through the first half.

Offensive standouts Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are banged up for Carolina. Smith and Williams are in better condition to play than Stewart Saturday.

San Francisco 49ers at Dallas Cowboys (-7, 38)

Shaun Hill has indicated that he is ready to go on Saturday despite suffering a back strain in practice this week.

San Francisco is expected to play their starters into the third quarter against Dallas. Veteran Damon Huard would likely start at QB, if Hill is unable to go.

The Cowboys should have their starters on the field through at least the first half. Wide receiver Roy Williams is out of action after suffering a shoulder injury in practice this week.

New York Jets at New York Giants [8:00 PM ET]

Jets: The Jets enter this border rivalry on a short week having played an emotional game on Monday night against Baltimore, the former team of Jets coach Rex Ryan. The Jets have named rookie Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback. Sanchez has thrown just 12 passes during preseason. His first pass against the Ravens was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Sanchez finished 3-for-8 for 43 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to running back Leon Washington. The Jets’ defense needs work after giving up 23 points to St. Louis in their opener and 24 points to Baltimore. Linebacker Vernon Gholston, the Jets’ No. 1 draft pick from a year ago, is slated to make his first NFL start. The 0-2 Jets hope to have back cornerback Darrelle Revis (hamstring) and nose guard Kris Jenkins (calf) along with kicker Jay Feely (groin), all of whom missed Monday’s loss.

The Jets are 1-9 to the under in preseason during Week 3 the past 10 years.

Key Injuries - Right offensive tackle Damien Woody (concussion) is questionable.
Running back Shonn Greene (ribs) is doubtful.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 16

Giants (-3, O/U 36): Giants coach Tom Coughlin is eager to have his team play better after last week’s embarrassing 17-3 loss to the Bears. The Giants could be the more motivated team. Coughlin would like to use this game as his dress rehearsal while also testing his team’s passing attack trying to see if he has a wide receiver who can replace Plaxico Burress. However, there is a 70 percent chance of rain, wind and even a tropical storm. That could alter the Giants’ game plan forcing more running plays. Eli Manning is 9-of-13 for 93 yards during preseason without a touchdown throw. Weather permitting Coughlin would like to see if receivers such as Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden can hook up well with Manning. No Giants wideout has more than three catches during preseason. The Jets nipped the Giants, 10-7, in last year’s preseason contest.

The Under has cashed in 12 of the Giants’ last 18 preseason games.

Key Injuries - Defensive tackles Jay Alford (knee) and Chris Canty (hamstring) are out.
Cornerback Aaron Ross (hamstring) is out.
Linebacker Antonio Pierce (foot) is questionable.

San Diego Chargers at Atlanta Falcons [CBS | 8:00 PM ET]

Chargers: The Chargers installed a mini game plan and piped in crowd noise during their Thursday practice as they prepare for this nationally televised matchup in the Georgia Dome. Chargers coach Norv Turner could use his starters up to three quarters. But Turner probably doesn’t have enough incentive to risk running back LaDainian Tomlinson and tight end Antonio Gates on artificial turf. Tomlinson hadn’t played in preseason for three straight seasons until this year. He has 12 carries in San Diego’s first two games for 28 yards. Gates missed three practices this week because of soreness. The Chargers bounced back from a 20-14 Week 1 loss to Seattle to beat the Cardinals on the road last week, 17-6. The Chargers are anxious to look at their No. 1 draft pick linebacker Larry English. He could make his NFL debut after missing San Diego’s first two games because of a hamstring injury.

San Diego has gone Under in 5 of its last seven preseason games.

Key Injuries - Running back LaDainian Tomlinson (groin) is doubtful.
Tight end Antonio Gates (ankle and Achilles) is doubtful.
Defensive end Jacques Cesaire (calf) is doubtful.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 20

Falcons (-3, O/U 42): Atlanta coach Mike Smith could have his starters play into the third quarter as they are expected to see their most extensive work of the preseason. Atlanta’s first-stringers were sharp last week in opening a 14-0 first quarter lead on St. Louis. Matt Ryan has had a strong preseason with a quarterback rating of 120.6. Ryan was 7-of-8 throwing for 81 yards last week, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez. The Falcons out-rushed the Rams, 162-29, with Michael Turner carrying seven times for 65 yards, including a one-yard touchdown run. The Falcons defeated the Rams 20-13 after being nipped in Week 1 by Detroit, 27-26. This is Atlanta’s first home game. Backup quarterback Chris Redman is slated to relieve Ryan and probably play the rest of the game after missing last week’s action. Third and fourth-string quarterbacks D.J. Shockley and John Parker Wilson are not likely to play.

Atlanta is 5-1 ATS in preseason under Mike Smith.

                      Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 23 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Chicago Bears at Denver Broncos [NBC | 8:00 PM ET]

Bears: The focus on this nationally televised matchup is on Jay Cutler returning to Denver where he played for three seasons. Cutler is downplaying the significance saying, “It doesn’t count for anything. We just want to go out there and play well and execute our offense.” The Bears have a quick turnaround hosting Cleveland on Thursday in their final preseason game. Cutler led the Bears to scores on the first three possessions – his only three series of the game – in last week’s 17-3 victory against the Giants. Cutler was 8-for-13 for 121 yards with a one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Desmond Clark. The game is important for several Chicago wide receivers that are on the bubble of making the team. Among them are Devin Aromashodu, Brandon Rideau, and veteran Rashied Davis along with tight end Michael Gaines and running back Adrian Peterson.

The Over has cashed in 10 of Chicago’s last 14 preseason games.

Key Injuries - Defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek (knee), cornerback Charles Tillman (back) and safety Danieal Manning (hamstring) are out.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 19

Broncos (-1.5, O/U 38): Kyle Orton isn’t getting the media attention Jay Cutler is, but he, too, is going against his former club. Orton was 21-12 as a starter for the Bears from 2005-2008. Orton began preseason with his new team throwing interceptions on each of his first three series in a Week 1 loss to San Francisco. He rebounded last week to go 18-for-26 for 182 yards with a touchdown and interception in a 27-13 loss to Seattle. Now he faces the Bears. “I know what they do,” Orton said about the Bears. “It’s not too hard to figure out. They are a very simple defense and they do what they do really well. I certainly know the personnel, so I hope it will be an advantage.” Backup quarterback Chris Simms is out with an ankle injury so sixth-round draft pick Tom Brandstater and newly-signed Ingle Martin will follow Orton.

Denver is 4-2 to the over in its last six preseason games.

Key Injuries - Quarterback Chris Simms (ankle) is out.
Running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) is doubtful.

What bettors need to know: Vikings at Texans
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Vikings at Houston Texans (-3.5, 39)

                          Hogging the spotlight

As if Brett Favre hasn't received enough media attention already, he'll be front and center on Monday Night Football this week.

Favre made a cameo appearance for the Vikings last week, completing only one of four passes for four yards. That was really nothing more than a dog and pony show for the Vikings fans.

On Monday we should see a little more from Favre. He's expected to play the entire first half.

The Vikings haven't played since last Friday so Favre has had the better part of two weeks to learn the Vikings offensive playbook.

That's the same playbook that he's more than likely had a copy of on his coffee table all summer, but I digress.

This week we've heard reports indicating that the Vikings locker room is divided, with some supporting Tarvaris Jackson over No. 4.

                          Favre shrugged off those rumors

"Once again, I will continue to work on that part of it. I think my experience can only go so far on the field, but I think it can pay huge dividends off the field and in the locker room and how to adjust. You know what? You've got to be yourself. I'm pretty content with my personality. I think it's able to fit in with just about everyone."

                          Talking defense

Even though their starting unit has seen limited action, the Vikings defense appears to be in mid-season form.

In its preseason opener against the Colts, Minnesota gave up only 142 total yards.

The Chiefs cracked the 300-yard plateau against the Vikings last week, but they were still held to only 13 points.

You have to go back to Aug. 8, 2008 to find the last time Minnesota gave up more than 16 points in a preseason game. The under is 4-1 in its last five exhibition matchups.

                          Looking for redemption

The Houston Texans were embarrassed in front of their home faithful last week, losing 38-14 to the New Orleans Saints.

Maybe they shouldn't hang their heads so low after the Saints follow-up performance left Oakland spinning.

Head coach Gary Kubiak wants his players to take these so-called 'meaningless' games seriously.

“They better all take on the same meaning,” Kubiak said. “They better all be just as important to each player every week.”

The good news is, the Texans haven't lost both preseason home games since going 0-4 in 2003, which was just their second year in the league.

                          Dynamic duo

The Texans' defense remains a work in progress, but their offense should look much sharper with Kubiak playing his starters into the second half on Monday.

As Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson go, so do the Texans.

Schaub is 18-of-23 for 167 yards and a touchdown so far this preseason. Johnson hasn't seen a great deal of action, catching only five passes for 53 yards.

Dan Orlovsky will play the entire fourth quarter with Rex Grossman recovering from a pulled hamstring.

                          Welcome back

The Vikings may have the motivational edge in the second half. Sage Rosenfels is not only battling Tarvaris Jackson for the backup QB role, but also making his return to Houston, where he spent the last three seasons.

Rosenfels was held out of last week's preseason game due to an injured ankle, but is expected to play in the second half on Monday.

He left Houston for Minnesota hoping to earn a starting job, but if the prospect of playing second or third fiddle to Favre is bothering him, he isn't letting it show.

“I'm working as hard as I can to get ready,” Rosenfels said. “If the team needs me, I want to be ready to play and to play high-caliber football. I'm going to keep working, keep my head up and be ready to go when they need me.”

Tarvaris Jackson did his best to seal up the backup spot in Rosenfels' absence, completing 12-of-15 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns in last week's win over the Chiefs.

                          By the numbers

The Texans opened as 2.5-point favorites but have since been bet up to -3.5 at most books.

The total has dropped a full two points since opening at 41.

Minnesota Vikings at Houston Texans [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

Vikings: After barely playing last week, Brett Favre is slated to play the first half. Favre, who signed with Minnesota on Aug. 18, was 1-for-4 for four yards last week in a 17-13 victory against Kansas City. The Vikings opened preseason with a 13-3 road win against Indianapolis. Minnesota’s defense held the Colts and Chiefs to a combined average of 228 yards of offense. However, Peyton Manning barely played against the Vikings and the Chiefs are struggling on offense. Tarvaris Jackson was the Vikings’ star versus the Chiefs completing 12-of-15 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Sage Rosenfels is competing with Jackson for the backup quarterback spot. He missed last week with an ankle injury, but could play against the Texas. Rosenfels played for the Texans from 2006-2008. Minnesota may be without its best wide receiver Bernard Berrian (hamstring) and top pass rusher Jared Allen (ankle).

The Vikings are 9-5 ATS the past four years in preseason.

Key Injuries - Wide receiver Bernard Berrian (hamstring) is doubtful and defensive end Jared Allen (ankle) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Texans (-3, O/U 39): The Texans shouldn’t lack for motivation with a rare nationally televised home game and off an embarrassing 38-14 loss to New Orleans last week. The Texans are 3-0 against the spread during their dress rehearsal preseason game under Gary Kubiak, winning by 21 points against the spread. Kubiak plans on playing his starters for three quarters. “They’re going out there for three quarters and if you’re a starter, you better play like one because there’s some good competition going on,” Kubiak said. “You’ll see some new faces playing with the starters, and we’ll see how we come out of it.” The Texans have their offense nearly in place behind quarterback Matt Schaub, but their defense is unsettled with starting competition going on at linebacker, tackle and safety. The Saints piled up 420 yards of offense against Houston. Cornerback Dunta Robinson has yet to report to camp due to salary dispute.

The Over has cashed 8 of 10 times in preseason under Gary Kubiak.

Key Injuries - Linebacker Brian Cushing (knee), linebacker Cato June (arm) and defensive tackle Travis Johnson (sports hernia) are out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 21(UNDER - Total of the Day)

                              Matt Cassel-QB- Chiefs Aug. 30 - 12:24 am et

X-rays on Matt Cassel's knee came back negative after he left the Chiefs' Saturday night preseason game early.
Cassel left the field without assistance, but was noticeably limping. His status for the preseason finale is uncertain, and we can probably expect a secretive approach from the Chiefs about Cassel's Week 1 availability. Kansas City's new GM, Scott Pioli, hails from the Bill Belichick tree.
