    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, August 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers look for a win in New York, the Tigers take on the Angels, and the D-Backs and Giants meet on the west coast.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Kevin Millwood (9-8, 3.48 ERA) will get the ball for the Rangers on Tuesday night as they begin a series at Yankee Stadium. Righthander Millwood is coming off a rough outing against the Twins in which he gave up five earned runs over 5 2-3 innings in a loss; Millwood last won on July 20. New York will go with Joba Chamberlain (8-3, 3.98 ERA) on Tuesday. Righthander Chamberlain has given up eight runs over 11 innings over his last two outings against the M's and Jays.

Also on the American League schedule for Tuesday: Tampa Bay at Toronto, the White Sox at Boston, Baltimore at Minnesota, Cleveland at Kansas City, Oakland at Seattle, and Detroit at the Angels. Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 3.18 ERA) will start for the Tigers; the lefthander gave up six runs over six innings against Seattle last time out. John Lackey (8-6, 4.00 ERA) will try to pitch Los Angeles to a win; the righthander lost to Cleveland in his last start (six runs over his 5 1-3 innings).

The top pitching matchup in the National League on Tuesday will take place in San Francisco, where the Giants' Matt Cain (12-4, 2.43 ERA) battles the D-Backs' Dan Haren (12-8, 2.74 ERA). Righthander Cain took a no-decision against the Reds last time out, allowing just one earned run over his eight innings of work. Righthander Haren is coming off a loss to the Phillies (six runs in five innings), and he's only managed to get the win in two of his past five mound trips.

Rounding out Tuesday's NL slate: Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, San Diego at Atlanta, the Mets at Florida, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, Washington at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Colorado, and Houston at St. Louis. The Astros will send Wandy Rodriguez (12-7, 2.89 ERA) to the hill, while the Cardinals counter with Adam Wainwright (14-7, 2.61 ERA). Righthander Wainwright has given up two or fewer runs in each of his past 10 starts, with the Cards winning eight of those contests.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The WNBA returns to action with four games on the schedule for Tuesday: Detroit at Connecticut, Chicago at Los Angeles, Washington at Seattle, and Sacramento at Atlanta. The Monarchs are coming off a big 82-60 home win over Washington on Saturday, with Nicole Powell scoring 26 points. The Dream fell 91-87 to Los Angeles on Sunday, despite 26 points from Iziane Castro Marques. Chamique Holdsclaw missed Atlanta's game on Sunday because of a sore knee.

      Tuesday, August 25

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Helpful notes for today’s betting action
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Sans Santana

Mets ace Johan Santana was scratched from Tuesday's start at Florida due to a sore elbow. He will be examined by team physician Dr. David Altchek and replaced on the mound by Nelson Figueroa. When Santana pitched at Florida in April, the Mets were a -125 favorite. With Figueroa on the mound, they are -107 and moving toward becoming an underdog.

The list of injured players for the Mets makes a pretty good team that is only missing a catcher. Currently, Santana, one-time closer J.J. Putz, outfielders Carlos Beltran, Jeff Francoeur and Fernando Martinez, first baseman Carlos Delgado, second baseman Ramon Martinez, shortstop Jose Reyes and third baseman David Wright all are unable to play.

      Nice opening for new closer

Carlos Marmol, who became closer for the Chicago Cubs after Kevin Gregg tore the heart out of Cubs fans with three blown saves and a loss in a 17-day span in August, finally got a chance to seal a game Sunday and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth against the Dodgers, striking out Manny Ramirez to end the game. Marmol throws as hard as anyone in the game but has control problems; in 58 1-3 innings, he has allowed just 32 hits and struck out 69 but has issued 52 walks. The Cubs are back home Tuesday and a -240 favorite vs. Washington.

      Connecticut not jonesin' for Asjha

The Connecticut Sun are 4-0-2 against the spread in their last six games despite missing their best player. Asjha Jones, the club's leading scorer, has missed the Sun's last three games, but Connecticut is 2-1 straight up and 1-0-2 against the number. The surging squad are 4-point faves tonight against the Shock. Jones isn't expect back for at least another week because of a sore Achilles tendon.

      Arsenal gunning for critics

Remember when Arsenal sold their best striker (Emmanuel Adebayor) and defender (Kolo Toure) to Manchester City and there were whispers the Gunners wouldn't be able to secure a place in the top four of the Premiership table?

Well, those whispers have silenced. Arsenal are undefeated in EPL and Champions League play so far and have outscored their opponents 12-2. They're -300 faves to win Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier against Celtic. Find out our soccer expert's pick for the match here.

      Getting the Joba done?

The Yankees constantly monitor the innings pitched by Joba Chamberlain, who is a -173 favorite vs. Texas. But based on recent outings, you have to wonder whether Chamberlain is wearing down. Since allowing just one run and five hits in 15 innings over consecutive starts vs. Oakland and Tampa Bay on July 24 and 29, Chamberlain has pitched just 16 innings in three starts and allowed 18 hits, 12 walks and 12 runs. In his last start, he threw 90 pitches, the first time in six starts he has been under 100.

      Quotable

"Isn't this like Chicken Little yelling 'The sky is falling' at the same time selling tickets to watch meteor showers?" - Judge Theodore McKee, noting that betting advice is given on the NFL Network on Sirius/XM Radio. Nevertheless, McKee and two other judges on an appeals court panel in Philadelphia ruled Monday that Delaware's plan to stage single-game sports betting violates federal law.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a late summer day.......

        13) It came to my attention today that Pluto is no longer a planet; not only didn't I know, but this happened three years ago, August 24, 2006. Where the hell was I? How did I not know this? Who decides this?

        12) Apparently, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided there needed to be a definition of what a planet actually was, and when they had one, the odd man out was Pluto. They took a vote at meeting in the Czech Republic, and nine planets became eight. Did anyone speak up for Pluto? Anyway, that put my Monday on tilt, for whatever reason.

        11) Closer to home, I've never seen so many dropped popups in major leagues as I have this season. Why is this? Good players too-- it makes you wonder what the hell is going on? Lack of concentration?

        10) Redskins' QB Jason Campbell was 1-7/10 yards passing Saturday against the Steelers, but the game was played in a downpour, so he got a pass from the writers I read. Problem is, Redskins play in NFC East, in a division where games are played in Philly and Jersey in December- there is crummy weather in the northeast late in the season. I think he is going to be good, but Campbell better learn to deal with wet footballs.

        9) Ryan Moore is 22nd on FedEx points list after winning his first PGA tournament Sunday-- he doesn't wear sponsors' logos on his clothes, so that makes him unique on Tour. Will be interesting to see if he picks up any sponsors now that hes broken into the win column.

        8) Arizona Wildcats hired a new grad assistant for the basketball program last week; kid named Luke Murray, who used to work for Quinnipiac and Post. Chances are you've heard of his dad, Bill Murray.

        7) When was the last time ESPN televised a Duke football game? Every basketball game the Blue Devils play is seemingly on TV, whether it is against the Tar Heels or Coastal Carolina, but we never see the pigskin Dukies play. Wonder why that is.

        6) Peter Karmanos is wealthy enough that he owns Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL; he was once a clerk in Detroit traffic court, but graduated from that job to being CEO of Compuwear. How many clerks in traffic court wind up owning a pro sports franchise?

        5) In the Texas high school football playoffs, the champs have to win six games to get a trophy. Around here, the whole season is nine games and then the state playoffs are three more games. Whole different world.

        4) Its coming out this year that more and more athletes are coping with depression; having a high profile, high paying job where your job stats gets posted in newspaper every day ain't as easy as it looks, especially with the increased amount of media coverage these days. People who aren't used to failure have a hard time coping with failing for the first time.

        3) Here is how hard it is for small market baseball teams to stay good; it takes creativity and cajones, as well as more than a little luck........

Mark Mulder pitched five years for the A's, who then traded him to the Cardinals for three players (Barton/Calero/Haren). Tremendous steal by the A's, as Mulder broke down, while Haren gave A's three super years, Calero gave them four OK ones and they still have Barton.

Oakland then flipped Haren to Arizona for six players-- journeyman pitcher Dana Eveland and five prospects. Brett Anderson is already best pitcher on A's at age 22; Carter is having a huge year in AA, Gonzalez and Greg Smith were moved to Colorado in the Matt Holliday trade and Aaron Cunningham has been back and forth between majors and AAA.

Oakland then moved free agent-to-be Holliday to St Louis for Wallace, a solid 3B prospect, and two more prospects who were high draft picks.

Its not that much fun rooting for a team that always loses its best guys to free agency, but if your team is creative, they find ways to compete.

        2) Former UNLV point guard Danny Tarkanian is running for US Senator from Nevada, challenging incumbent Harry Reid. Tark the Shark's son ran for Secretary of State in Nevada three years ago, but lost. Polls have him in the lead in this race, which would be very bad news for the NCAA.

        1) I got mixed reaction to claiming that I think Tim Tebow is best college football player ever. It may have been premature before he plays out his senior season, but I think no matter who you think is best, Tebow has earned the right to be in the conversation.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (-138, 7)

The Giants are starting a series and a homestand, which has been a winning formula all season.

The Giants won the opener of their first six series at Pacific Bell Park and are 14-5 overall in series openers.

When starting a homestand, the Giants are even better. San Francisco won the opening game of a homestand eight straight times before losing its last one to Cincinnati on Aug. 7.

Did we mention that the Diamondbacks have lost nine of their last 10 road games? Or that Cy Young Award candidate Matt Cain is pitching for the Giants?

              Pick: San Francisco

Cleveland Indians vs. Kansas City Royals (-163, 8)

For the Indians, the kids are all right.

Cleveland has won five of its last eight games with the help of hot hitting from a pair of youngsters.

Second baseman Luis Valbuena, who hit less than .200 through the first two months of the season, is batting .305 since July 1. He is riding a six-game hitting streak (8-for-23) with four runs, two homers and four RBI.

Outfielder Matt LaPorta has hit safely in all four games since his recall from the minor leagues, batting .333 with three doubles, four runs and four RBI.

To keep their hitting streaks alive, Valbuena and LaPorta have to get the better of slumping Royals ace Zack Greinke, who has won just one of his last nine starts.

              Pick: Cleveland

                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.86 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

This righty gets forgotten sometimes on Philly’s southpaw dominated starting rotation. But sharp bettors know the good work the hefty hurler is providing.

Blanton has delivered a quality start in nine of his last 10 outings, dropping his once bloated ERA under 4.00.

The under is 7-2-1 in his last 10 outings and the Phils are 6-2 in his last eight starts.

“He’s a bulldog who comes right after you,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters following his last start.

                Slumping

Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 3.18), Detroit Tigers

The move to acquire this lefty hasn’t worked out as well has the Tigers had hoped. The former Mariner had 2.48 ERA at Seattle’s home park this year, but he’s not finding the confines as friendly in Detroit.

Washburn has allowed 17 earned runs in just four starts for the Tigers – all of which were at Comerica Park.

“It hasn’t gone the way I wanted so far,” Washburn said of his Tiger career following his latest poor showing.

He got the early hook in his last start after giving up six runs and four dingers against his former team. Washburn is 0-1 with a 6.04 ERA in a Detroit uniform.

                Returning

Carlos Zambrano (7-4, 3.35), Chicago Cubs

This fiery righty makes his return from the disabled list tomorrow against the Nationals. A sore back has kept Zambrano out of the Cubs lineup since Aug. 1.

He drew some headlines shortly after making his way to the DL. He admitted to reporters that his back was acting up because he was too lazy to strengthen his abdominal muscles.

He threw five scoreless innings in a minor league start last week and pronounced himself healthy afterwards. Chicago had won Zambrano’s last five starts prior to the DL detour

Right-hander Kevin Millwood (9-8, 3.48 ERA) seeks his second win in nine career starts against New York. The Rangers are 9-27 in Millwood’s past 36 road outings. Millwood struggled in his last appearance, giving up five earned runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings versus Minnesota on Wednesday. He has only one victory in his last eight starts. Texas has switched first basemen, calling up Chris Davis to start and putting slumping Hank Blalock on the bench. Davis was batting .312 in Triple A, while Blalock was batting .238 and had just seven hits in his last 43 at bats. The Rangers have won 10 of their last 13 games against American League East clubs.

Key Injuries - Jarrod Saltalamacchia (arm) is on the DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Yankees (-$1.85, O/U 9.5): New York is 27-9 since the All-Star break. The Yankees have won 10 of their past 11 series since the break and 15 of the last 17 series during the past two months. They have won 25 of the last 32 times they’ve faced a right-hander. Hideki Matsui has three homers and seven RBIs in five games versus Texas. Right-hander Joba Chamberlain (8-3, 3.98 ERA) is making his first start since Aug. 16. Chamberlain was the loser in his last start, a 10-3 loss to Seattle. The 23-year-old surrendered four runs on seven hits in five innings. He is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in his last three starts. Chamberlain had a no-decision in his lone start versus Texas this year giving up three runs in four innings back in late May at Texas. The Yankees are 14-2 in Chamberlain’s last 16 starts at Yankee Stadium.

The Over is 17-8-2 in New York’s last 27 games versus American League West teams.
The Over has cashed 8 of the last 10 times when Chamberlain has started.

Key Injuries - Brett Gardner (finger) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Astros: The Astros are 4-1 in their last five games, but now take to the road. Houston has lost 12 of its past 16 road games. The Astros are 1-7 in their last eight games against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Wandy Rodriguez is 12-7 on the season with a 2.89 ERA. The southpaw is 7-1 with a 2.38 ERA in his last 11 starts. He defeated the Marlins at home on Thursday, 4-1. Rodriguez pitched eight innings allowing one run and four hits. Rodriguez is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA in four starts in St. Louis. Rodriguez has been much better at home going 7-2 with a 1.73 ERA compared to 5-5 with a 4.21 ERA on the road. Houston is 6-20 in Rodriguez’s last 26 road starts when playing teams with a winning record. The teams are 18-6-1 to the under in their last 25 meetings.

The Over is 6-1 in Houston’s last seven road games.

Key Injuries - Mike Hampton (shoulder) is on the DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cardinals (-$1.70, O/U 7 over -$1.15): Despite batting just .223 the Cardinals went 5-2 on their recently concluded 5-2 road trip. They may not need to score too much with Adam Wainwright (14-7, 2.61 ERA) on the mound. Wainwright goes for a career-high 15th win and is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts versus Houston this year. The right-hander has a 1.44 ERA in his last 11 outings. He has issued just one walk this month in four starts. Wainwright pitches deep into games, too, going at least six innings in each of his last 24 starts. The Cardinals are 39-16 in Wainwright’s past 55 starts. St. Louis is 7-1 in Wainwright’s past eight starts versus the Astros. St. Louis has won nine of its last 11 when facing a left-handed starter. Albert Pujols is just 3-for-25 (.133) in his career facing Wandy Rodriguez. St. Louis is 19-6 in its last 25 games.

Chicago Sky at Los Angeles Sparks (-7, 141.5)

The Sparks finally have found some consistency at just the right time.

Needing to make a charge for the playoffs, the Sparks have won five straight games, going 4-1 against the spread and playing under the total four times. Prior to this streak, they had won consecutive games just once.

Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie both have had to play themselves into shape this season and weren't even on the court together until Aug. 4. During the winning streak, Parker - the WNBA Player of the Week - is averaging 16.4 points and 9.8 rebounds and Leslie is averaging 16.0 and 6.6.

Parker and Leslie may have their way inside as Sky center Sylvia Fowles has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and is not expected to play. Chicago is 0-7 straight up and ATS when Fowles is sidelined.

                          Pick: Los Angeles

Sacramento Monarchs at Atlanta Dream (-4, 165.5)

The Atlanta Dream are going to have to make part of their playoff push without Chamique Holdsclaw.

The Dream's veteran leader and top scorer has missed most of the last two games with a sore knee and said she would be out for a week. Atlanta (14-12) is tied for second in the Eastern Conference but plays six of its last seven games on the road.

"It’s just really, really sore," Holdsclaw told the Tennessee edition of Scout.com. "(The doctor) didn’t want me to play, because it was really sore in areas that shouldn’t be as tender."

"We’re just not taking any chances with her," Atlanta coach Marynell Meadors told the web site.

The Dream may have a capable replacement in rookie Angel McCaughtry, who has scored in double figures in nine straight games and has totaled 57 in the last two contests, picking up the slack for Holdsclaw. She scored in double figures nine times in the first 17 games.

                          Pick: Atlanta

                            Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for August 25, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                            1. Quick Hits

Mets ace Johan Santana will miss tonight's start in Florida because of elbow pain. Why chance things? Just shut him down... like the rest of the team.
High rent district. San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers gets a 6 year deal for $93-million. A shade under Eli Manning.
All bets are off. An appeals court says Delaware can't conduct sports betting starting September 1st. They rule it violates federal law.
Caster Semanya the he/she track star received a hero's welcome upon returning home to South Africa. Former first lady Winnie Madikizela-Mandela told the cheering crowd, ''We are here to tell the whole world how proud we are of our little girl.''
Today is the first day of classes for the new George Steinbrenner High School outside Tampa. There is no truth to the rumor that the principal has already been fired.

                            2. Getting One's Goat

It's official. Brett Favre has driven people over the edge. A Minnesota Vikings fan was found with a live goat in her trunk. It was painted purple and gold and had the #4 shaved into both sides of its torso. Charges are being considered, but the insanity defense works for me.

                            3. Name that Tune

At Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway the other night NASCAR drivers were introduced to their favorite music. Ryan Newman, for example, chose "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy." Jeff Gordon: "Start me Up" by the Rolling Stones. Nobody selected the Beatles "Drive My Car." For that matter drivers for some reason also ignored "Here we go round the Mulberry Bush."

                            4. 60 Minute Man

I hope you saw the 60 Minutes tribute Sunday night to the father of 60 Minutes, the late Don Hewitt. What a giant in my industry.
As an aside, one of Don's proteges, Mike Wallace, came up to me at the U.S. Open tennis tournament a few years back. He said, "I watched you the other night on TV and was wondering, my God, how long have you been doing this?" And I'm thinking, here's the guy who had an exclusive interview with Noah after the flood, and he's asking me how long I've been in the business?

                            5. This Just In

Yesterday's bonus event was the downgrading of Pluto to a "dwarf planet." Subscriber Frank R. sent along a website with a "Pluto Petition." Over 26,000 voted that Pluto is a planet. Only 5600 demurred. The website, PlutoPetition.com includes a "News Flash under the poll. It reads, "Scientists say the Knicks are no longer a basketball team."
And I always thought scientists were a little slow to catch on.

Happy Birthday: Hall of Fame reliever and mustache possessor, Rollie Fingers. 53.
Bonus Birthdays: 007, Sean Connery. 79. And Reege, Regis Philbin. 78.

Today in Sports: 20-year old Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest pitcher to win 20 games. 1985.
Bonus Event: Elsewhere in Queens, the great Arthur Ashe becomes the first (and only) black man to win the U.S. Open tennis tournament. 1968.
