    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, August 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sprint Cup Series races at Bristol, the Red Sox host the Yankees, and the NFL offers up 10 more preseason contests.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are 10 National Football League preseason games on the schedule for Saturday, including the Giants at Chicago. New York won its exhibition opener 24-17 over Carolina last time out, getting a fumble-return TD from Tommie Hill at the end of the fourth quarter to secure the win. The Bears fell 27-20 to Buffalo last week, with prized acquisition Jay Cutler going just 5-of-10 for 64 yards passing and an INT. Chicago is pegged as a 2-point home favorite for Saturday.

Elsewhere, it'll be Carolina at Miami (-3), Detroit at Cleveland (-3), Tampa Bay at Jacksonville (-3), Buffalo at Green Bay (-3), New Orleans at Houston (-3), Oakland at San Francisco (-3), San Diego at Arizona (-2), Denver at Seattle (-3), and Pittsburgh at Washington (-3). Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suffered a scare in practice on Thursday afternoon when his foot was stepped on by a teammate; Big Ben is reportedly fine, but the team will be cautious with him.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

A.J. Burnett (10-6, 3.69 ERA) will take on Junichi Tazawa (1-2, 5.40 ERA) on Saturday afternoon as the Yankees continue their series at Fenway Park. Righthander Burnett blanked the Red Sox on one hit over 7 2-3 innings of work back on August 7, but had to settle for a no-decision in a 2-0 New York victory. Righthander Tazawa appeared in relief in that 15-inning August 7 contest, taking the loss for the Red Sox after surrendering two earned runs in his 1 2-3 innings.

Also on the American League schedule for Saturday: the Angels at Toronto, Seattle at Cleveland, Baltimore at the White Sox, Minnesota at Kansas City, Detroit at Oakland, and Texas at Tampa Bay. The Rangers will go with Tommy Hunter (6-2, 2.64 ERA) in that matchup, while the Rays counter with Matt Garza (7-8, 3.73 ERA). Righthander Hunter has picked up the win in each of his last three starts, while righthander Garza hasn't earned a win since back on July 24.

Meanwhile, the NL slate for Saturday has the Cubs at the Dodgers, Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at Washington, Arizona at Houston, Florida at Atlanta, Philadelphia at the Mets, San Francisco at Colorado, and St. Louis at San Diego. Chris Carpenter (13-3, 2.27 ERA) will get the ball for the Cardinals; righthander Carpenter is 8-0 with a no-decision in his last nine trips to the mound. Padres righthanded starter Kevin Correia (8-9, 4.32 ERA) blanked the Cubs over six innings in a no-decision last time out; San Diego is 3-0 over his last three starts.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night for the Sharpie 500. Kyle Busch won the Food City 500 at Bristol earlier in the season, and he's pegged as the 5/1 Vegas favorite to get the checkered flag this time around as well. Jimmie Johnson follows him on that list at 6/1, with Jeff Gordon at 7/1, and Tony Stewart at 8/1. Denny Hamlin is then listed at 10/1 odds to get the win, with defending champion Carl Edwards behind him at 12/1 odds.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, there are four games on the WNBA schedule for Saturday, with Minnesota at Connecticut, Detroit at Chicago, Washington at Sacramento, and Indiana at Seattle. The Fever picked up a rare loss last time out, falling 67-62 to Sacramento on Thursday despite 21 points from Katie Douglas. That put Indiana at 19-6 straight-up and 16-9 against-the-spread on the year. Seattle sits at 14-11 SU but just 9-15-1 ATS; they beat Detroit 79-75 in their last outing Tuesday night.

      This Day in Baseball

On August 22 in Baseball History...

1886 - Just as he reaches the ball on a long hit by Jimmy Wolf, Reds center fielder Abner Powell's pants are grabbed by a stray dog. Wolf circles the bases with the homer that wins the game for Louisville 5-3 in eleven innings.

1917 - Pittsburgh's Carson Bigbee set a major-league record — since tied — with 11 at-bats in a 22-inning game against Brooklyn. Pirate Elmer Jacobs pitched 16 2/3 innings in relief. The game was also the fourth consecutive extra-inning game by the Pirates for a total of 59 innings, a National League record.

1926 - After three games with the Tigers are rained out at home, Connie Mack and Tom Shibe get a court injunction and play the first Sunday game ever seen in Philadelphia. A light rain holds the crowd to 10,000 while Lefty Grove defeats the White Sox 3-2. A court later rules that Sunday baseball is still illegal; it will be 1934 before the law changes in Philadelphia.

1933 - William Veeck, president of the Chicago Cubs, urges a midsummer series of interleague games. He also proposes a split season. While some owners are in agreement on interleague play, Washington owner Clark Griffith opposes it.

1934 - Pitcher Wes Ferrell hit two home runs to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox in 12 innings. Trailing 2-1, Ferrell hit a home run in the eighth inning to tie the score and with two out in the 12th, Ferrell connected again for the game-winner.

1946 - Clubs approve a change to a 168-game schedule, but they will rescind the decision at another meeting September 16. Television is first recognized, with clubs given rights to their own games. Players jumping to outlaw leagues will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement for five years.

1961 - Roger Maris becomes the first player to hit his 50th home run in the month of August, as the Yankees lose to the Angels 4-3.

1965 - San Francisco's Juan Marichal, batting against Los Angeles' Sandy Koufax, complains that catcher Johnny Roseboro's return throws are too close. He then turns and attacks Roseboro with his bat. A 14-minute brawl ensues before Koufax, Willie Mays, and other peacemakers can restore order. Roseboro suffers a considerable cut on the head. Juan Marichal is suspended eight playing days and levied a National League-record $1,750 fine.

1984 - New York Mets right-hander Dwight Gooden, at 19, fanned nine San Diego Padres to become the 11th rookie to strike out 200 batters in one season.

1989 - Nolan Ryan strikes out Rickey Henderson in the fifth inning of a 2-0 loss to Oakland to become the first pitcher in major league history to strike out 5,000 batters.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals (-104, 9.5)

Yankee Stadium isn’t the only ballpark in the majors putting up big numbers. Bats have gotten a slight boost from a renovated Kauffman Stadium. Buildings added along the outfield have closed in the stadium and kept winds swirling about, giving balls a bit more giddy up.

"I'll be standing there and feeling the wind blowing against my pants one way and the next thing you know, the same inning a few batters later, it'll be blowing my pants the other way," left fielder David DeJesus told MLB.com. "You've just got to keep your eye on it."

Heading into Thursday, there have been 103 home runs at Kauffman Stadium in 2009 compared to the 96 dingers registered in the first 61 home games in 2008. The Royals have 48 home runs at home this season. Last year at this time, they had just 38 round-trippers inside Kauffman Stadium. Triples are also on the rise at Kauffman, with 40 three-baggers – third most in the bigs.

Kauffman Stadium has always been considered more of a pitcher’s park until this year. The ballpark currently ranks as the third-best hitter's park in the majors with a 1.166 rating. (Anything above 1.000 is considered a hitter's park.)

That bump in power may not seem like a lot but it’s produced a 32-26-2 over/under mark at Kauffman Stadium. That’s a huge difference when compared to Kansas City’s 20-35-4 over/under record on the road.

            Pick: Over 9.5

Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays (+102, 10)

The Blue Jays have got the runs.

No, not the type of runs you get when mixing a tainted $12 ballpark footlong with eight $10 ballpark beers. We’re talking the type of runs that cause a team to hemorrhage score after score.

Toronto has sharted out 37 runs during its five-game losing skid, including handing over 24 scores in a three-game sweep to the Boston Red Sox. The Jays have a collective ERA of 5.54 in the past week and have watched their starters get beat up and their bullpen give up late runs.

Now, Toronto faces the best hitting team in baseball when the Angels enter the Rogers Center Friday for a three-game weekend stay. Los Angeles is averaging just under six runs per game and hitting a major league-best .289 this season.

The Halos are 23-10 versus the American League East and have won seven of their last 10 meetings with the Blue Jays.

            Pick: Los Angeles -110

              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Aaron Laffey, Cleveland Indians (7-3, 3.61 ERA)

Here’s a guy oddsmakers haven’t caught on to yet. The 24-year-old lefty has won four of his last five starts and the highest odds he saw during that stretch was -114.

Laffey was recalled from Columbus Triple-A in April and has been competing with a group of other prospects to stay in the bigs for the remainder of this season and next. His ERA is just 1.35 over his past three starts and he has shown a knack for getting himself out of jams.

Laffey doesn’t punch out a ton of batters but he also doesn’t give up many long balls. He has only given up three home runs in 17 appearances this season.

Tommy Hunter, Texas Rangers (6-2, 2.64)

For Hunter’s first six games, in what is really his rookie season, he was God’s gift to under bettors. The under went 6-0 and oddsmakers were slow to bump him down from lofty totals like 11 and 10.5.

That’s changed now. But the good news is that he’s winning. The Rangers have won seven of Hunter’s 10 starts. He’s especially impressive on the road, where he is 2-0 and carries a 0.87 ERA.

Hunter visits the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday.

              Slumping

Tim Redding, New York Mets (1-4, 6.53 ERA)

The Mets are stinking it up so bad right right now, they’re turning to an arm they relegated to the bullpen even though he’s given some of his worst relief efforts lately.

Redding gave up three runs in each of his last two outings despite only pitching a total of four innings. But the move is necessary after the Mets dumped Livan Hernandez Thursday, in part to make room for returning closer Billy Wagner. They also have three starting pitchers on the DL, so they’re forced to go with the journeyman for at least one start.

Redding faces a red-hot J.A. Happ and the Phillies Saturday.

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Saturday, Aug. 22

St. Louis at San Diego (4:05 p.m. EDT). The Cardinals' Chris Carpenter goes for win No. 14. The Padres send Kevin Correia (8-9) to the mound.

                    STARS

                    Friday

-Hideki Matsui, Yankees, homered twice and had a career-high seven RBIs, and New York had 23 hits in a 20-11 victory over Boston.

-Brian Roberts, Orioles, hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning and had a solo shot in the third to lead Baltimore to a 5-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.

-Jeff Francoeur, Mets, homered among his three hits to help New York to a 4-2 victory over Philadelphia.

-Roy Oswalt, Astros, allowed three hits in seven innings and Houston handed Arizona its sixth straight loss with a 1-0 win.

-Ryan Raburn, Tigers, homered in his first two at-bats and Detroit beat Oakland 3-2.

-Scott Kazmir, Rays, took a shutout into the eighth inning and Tampa Bay beat Texas 5-3.

-Orlando Cabrera, Twins, hit a run-scoring triple in the 10th inning after a rare blown save by Joe Nathan in the ninth, helping Minnesota rally for a bizarre 5-4 victory over Kansas City.

-Nick Hundley, Padres, hit a three-run homer to back Clayton Richard and lead San Diego to a rare win over St. Louis, 4-0.

                    WELCOME BACK

Jerry Remy is working in the Boston Red Sox broadcast booth for the first time in more than three months. The color analyst on the team's telecasts returned Friday night for Boston's game against the Yankees. He took a leave of absence in early May after developing an infection and pneumonia following surgery for lung cancer late last year.

                    PUTTING ON A SHOW

Stephen Strasburg watched the fireworks explode over Nationals Park during his over-the-top welcome to the nation's capital. Four days after awarding him a record-breaking contract for a draft pick, the team set up a raised platform near third base for an on-field news conference attended by anyone willing to show up five hours early for the evening's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. A few hundred fans took the bait.

                    STATS

Jacoby Ellsbury swiped a base to tie the Red Sox record of 54 steals set by Tommy Harper in 1973. ... The Yankees broke a seven-game losing streak at Fenway Park. ... Hideki Matsui is batting .366 (15 for 41) with two homers and 10 RBIs against the Red Sox this season. ... Kansas City leads the majors with 70 wild pitches. ... The Padres pitched their third shutout of the season with a 4-0 win over St. Louis, moving them into a tie with Chicago and Washington for the fewest in the NL. ... The 20 runs were the most allowed by the Red Sox since the Yankees scored 22 on June 19, 2000 at Fenway Park. The combined 31 runs are the most scored in a game between the two franchises, surpassing the 29 in the New York Highlanders 15-14 win over the Boston Americans on July 29, 1903 in Boston.

                    SIDELINED STARTERS

Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook was removed from the game against San Francisco in the fourth inning with a sore right shoulder. Cook, who has been bothered by a sprained big toe on his right foot that may have been the culprit in a mechanical flaw he discovered in his delivery, left after walking Nate Schierholtz on four pitches to start the fourth. ... St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse was forced out of Friday night's game at San Diego after straining his left groin running out a single in the fifth inning.

                    SADNESS

Justin Duchscherer's agent says the Oakland Athletics right-hander won't pitch this season so he can concentrate on his treatment for depression. Duchscherer has been out all year after undergoing right elbow surgery in March. He made the All-Star team as a reliever in 2005 and as a starter last season.

                    SPEAKING

"When we play the Royals, it's a mess. It always is a mess because neither team gives up, neither team quits and there's always strange things happening during the games. It was just another typical Twins and Royals game.'' - Twins manager Ron Gardenhire after Minnesota beat Kansas City 5-4 in a bizarre game.

                    SEASONS

                    Aug. 22

1886 - Cincinnati outfielder Abner Powell was literally brought down by the dog days of summer. Chicken Wolf of the Louisville Colonels hit a deep drive and Powell took off after it, joined by a dog that had been sleeping by the fence. The dog bit Powell's leg before the outfielder could get to the ball and wouldn't let go as Wolf scored on a game-winning inside-the-park homer.

1917 - Pittsburgh's Carson Bigbee set a major league record - since tied - with 11 at-bats in a 22-inning game against Brooklyn. Pirate Elmer Jacobs pitched 16 2-3 innings in relief. The game was also the fourth consecutive extra-inning game by the Pirates for a total of 59 innings, a National League record.

1934 - Pitcher Wes Ferrell hit two home runs to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox in 12 innings. Trailing 2-1, Ferrell hit a home run in the eighth inning to tie the score. Ferrell connected again for the game-winner with two out in the 12th.

1959 - Cincinnati's Frank Robinson hit three consecutive homers in an 11-4 win over St. Louis.

1961 - Roger Maris, en route to his 61-home run season, became the first player to hit his 50th homer in August. He connected off California pitcher Ken McBride in a 4-3 loss to the Angels.

1965 - In the third inning of a game against Los Angeles, pitcher Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants hit catcher John Roseboro of the Dodgers in the head with his bat. A 14-minute brawl ensued and Roseboro suffered cuts on the head. Marichal thought Roseboro threw too close to his head when returning the ball to Sandy Koufax.

1984 - New York Mets right-hander Dwight Gooden, at 19, fanned nine San Diego Padres to become the 11th rookie to strike out 200 batters in one season.

1989 - Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers became the first pitcher to strike out 5,000 batters. Ryan struck out 13, walked two and allowed only five hits in a 2-0 loss to Oakland. Ryan began the night needing six strikeouts and fanned Rickey Henderson swinging, leading off the fifth inning, for the record.

1998 - Mark McGwire set a major league record for most home runs in three consecutive seasons, connecting for his 52nd homer of 1998 in the first inning of the St. Louis Cardinals' 14-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. McGwire hit 162 homers in three seasons, including 52 in 1996 and 58 in 1997, to pass Babe Ruth, who had 161 from 1926-28.

1999 - Mark McGwire became the first player to hit 50 homers in each of four consecutive seasons, hitting Nos. 49 and 50 in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets.

2000 - Colorado tied an NL record by using 10 pitchers in a 7-6, 12-inning win over Atlanta. Catcher Brent Mayne worked a scoreless 12th inning to become the first position player to win a game since the Yankees' Rocky Colavito on Aug. 25, 1968.

2006 - Nick Markakis homered in his first three at-bats to lead Baltimore to a 6-3 victory over Minnesota.

2007 - The Texas Rangers became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game, setting an American League record in a 30-3 rout of the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader. It was the ninth time a major league team scored 30 runs, the first since the Chicago Colts set the major league mark in a 36-7 rout of Louisville in a National League game on June 28, 1897. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez each homered twice and finished with seven RBIs. The 30 RBIs set a major league record. Texas also won the nightcap 9-7.

Today's birthdays: Ryan Feierabend 24; Randy Wolf 33; Jeff Weaver 33; Carl Yastrzemski 70

                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Lynx at Connecticut Sun (-5, 159.5)

The Lynx are tumbling out of the Western Conference playoff race.

Coming out of the All-Star break, Minnesota was 10-7 and within striking distance of first place as it targeted its first playoff berth. The Lynx have lost seven of eight games overall and against the spread.

One thing the Lynx have been able to count on is offense. Even without injured star Simeone Augustus, Minnesota has been second in the WNBA in scoring virtually all season.

But in their current four-game slide, the Lynx have scored fewer points each time out, dropping from 87 to 63 and falling to third in the league in offense.

Minnesota has not won in Connecticut since July 22, 2004.

                              Pick: Connecticut -5

Detroit Shock at Chicago Sky (-3, 148)

The Sky are getting healthy at the right time. They expect to have All-Star center Sylvia Fowles back, which may be why they are favored vs. the Shock for the first time since entering the league in 2006.

Fowles, who missed five games in July (all losses) with a knee injury earlier this season, sat out Wednesday's 106-99 home loss to Phoenix with a sprained left ankle.

Shyra Ely started for Fowles and scored a career-high 26 points. After the game, Sky coach Steven Key said Fowles should play in the next game.

Chicago also got back reserve forward Brooke Wyckoff, who missed two games with an illness. And the Sky signed forward Mistie Bass, who was cut in preseason but re-signed to replace center Chen Nan, who was diagnosed with a back injury and was waived.

                              Pick: Chicago -3
