    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, August 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Diamondbacks take on the Phillies, the Cardinals try to defeat the Dodgers, and the Blue Jays play host to the Red Sox.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Dan Haren (12-7, 2.50 ERA) vs. Cliff Lee (3-0, 1.13 ERA in the NL) on Wednesday as the Diamondbacks take on the Phillies in the night's marquee pitching matchup. Righthander Haren dominated the Dodgers last time out, holding them to one earned run on six hits over eight innings in the win. Lefthander Lee continued to pay dividends for the Phillies in his last start, giving up just one earned run over eight innings vs. the Cubs; Lee last lost on July 10.

Elsewhere around the National League on Wednesday it'll be Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Colorado at Washington, San Francisco at Cincinnati, Atlanta at the Mets, Florida at Houston, the Cubs at San Diego, and St. Louis at the Dodgers. Adam Wainwright (14-7, 2.62 ERA) will get the ball for the Cardinals; the righthander blanked the Padres over seven innings last time out. The Dodgers counter with Clayton Kershaw (8-7, 2.91 ERA); L.A. has lost his last five outings.

Over in the American League the top matchup has Boston and Clay Buchholz (1-3, 4.45 ERA) taking on Toronto and Roy Halladay (13-5, 2.65 ERA). Righthander Buchholz took a hard-luck loss against the Tigers last time out, surrendering one earned run on five hits over his seven innings of work. Buchholz beat the Jays back on July 17. Righthander Halladay has won two straight starts over the Rays and Orioles, and he picked up a complete-game victory over Boston on July 19.

Rounding out the AL slate for Wednesday: the Angels at Cleveland, Seattle at Detroit, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Texas, the Yankees at Oakland, and Kansas City at the White Sox. Royals starter Zack Greinke (11-7, 2.33 ERA) held the Tigers scoreless over seven innings last time out, but still took a no-decision; the righthander has just one win since the start of July. The White Sox go with Jose Contreras (4-11, 5.40 ERA) as he tries to keep a spot in the rotation.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are two WNBA games on tap for Wednesday, with New York at Connecticut and Minnesota at Los Angeles. The Lynx have been one of the coldest teams in the league lately, losing three straight contests to sit at 11-13 both straight-up and against-the-spread on the season. Minnesota fell 79-76 to Chicago last time out, despite 25 points from Roneeka Hodges. The Lynx last played the Sparks July 28, and they were defeated by a score of 76-70 at home.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

My take on the Brett Favre fiasco.......

-- What do the Vikings who gave up huge chunks of their offseason to practice think of a QB, the supposed team leader, who waltzes in and gets paid $12M without ever going through two-a-days, the offseason workouts or even the first preseason game? I'd say they don't like it.

-- This thing was etched in stone from the spring-- why else would the NFL schedule Favre's Vikings at Eric Mangini's Browns in Week 1? Is that a coincidence? Hell no.

-- Is scalping legal in Minnesota/Wisconsin? Those two games with the Packers and Vikings are going to a very hot ticket.

-- One of Minnesota's QBs has to go now; Jackson/Rosenfels both are nursing minor injuries, John David Booty is highly thought of. Teams (Denver? Denver?) are going to take a look at whomever they discard.

-- Minnesota has only five outdoor games this season, with games in domes of Arizona-Detroit-St Louis, as well as eight home dome tilts.

-- Brad Childress is 24-24 (0-1 in playoffs) in his three years as coach of the Vikings, which explains his desperation to upgrade at QB, so he can win a playoff game and keep his job, but it says here Childress will be back as an assistant coach in the NFL in 2010, and rightfully so.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) OK, the Nationals draw an average of 23,100 fans at home-- a sellout in DC is 41,888, so thats an extra 18,788 fans. Say the average ticket is $25 (no idea what it actually is), then the Nationals could recoup a cool $469,700 if they start Stephen Strasburg at home and game sells out, and that's before any parking or concession revenue is counted.

      12) Then add in money from t-shirts, hats, jerseys and season tickets to be sold, and the Strasburg signing figures to invigorate a franchise that had yet to prove to its fanbase that it was serious about winning. They have done that now. Only time will tell if it was worth it, but they had to take the chance and sign him, no doubt about that.

      11) By the way, Strasburg got signed 77 seconds before the deadline to sign players this season, so technically, they did not wait until the last minute to get a deal done, but pretty darned close.

      10) Some guy in Miami stole identities of 130,000,000 people, but got caught, which begs the question, why don't people use cash anymore? Hard to steal your identity if you're using good ol' paper money.

      9) Syracuse becomes an interesting college football team to watch after they named Duke basketball player Greg Paulus starting QB this year. Paulus is from Syracuse, was once a blue-chip QB recruit, but that was five years ago. To me, its a signal of how bad the Orange program is, and how far they have to go to become relevant again.

      8) New coach Marrone is an NFL guy, coming from the Saints, so he's buying a year to recruit a QB while Paulus holds down the fort. Take a pen and draw a 200-mile circle around Syracuse-- not a lot of high school football hotbeds in that circle,. It’s hard to recruit to frigid Syracuse.

      7) From 1977-2008, Denver Broncos went 304-197-1 under four head coaches, a great run of success, but this year isn't looking so hot, after they let two-time Super Bowl winner Shanahan go, replaced him with a 32-year wunderkind who then immediately alienated the star QB, who demanded and got a trade. Nobody seems to like the coach-- they open in Cincinnati, which becomes a "damn-well-better-win" game in Week 1.

      6) Padres' rookie slugger Kyle Blanks (6-6, 285) was at Charger practice Tuesday; his mom never let him play football, and after watching Bolts go thru a contact practice, Blanks seemed glad she didn't let him play. Young Blanks hit an inside-the-park HR in bottom of 8th Tuesday- is he the biggest guy in baseball history to hit an inside-the-park home run?

      5) For the second year in a row, Aaron Crow was a 1st-round pick in the baseball draft who didn't sign with the pros. Guess he likes college life.

      4) There is a new football offense a high school in Texas uses that plays with two QBs in game at once, at times. You wonder if Andy Reid will give that high school coach a call and pick his brain some, to get ideas on how best to utilize the presence of McNabb/Vick in his offense.

      3) Former Iona basketball coach Jeff Ruland is back in the college game as head coach at U of District Columbia, which is movng up from D-II to D-I. Ruland was most recently an assistant with the Philly 76ers.

      2) Michael Jackson still hasn't been buried; why, I have no idea, but it seems ridiculous that these geniuses are waiting until his 51st birthday (a week from Saturday) to finally let the man rest in peace.

      1) I know it’s a free country, and people can do as they see fit, but there is also a right way and wrong way to do things. Being part of a team is a great thing, but it entails making the same sacrifices your teammates are making, its part of how you bond as a team. I guess Brett Favre would disagree with me, but he's thumbed his nose at both his teammates and his coaches by coming into camp so late after training camp started.

        SCOREBOARD

        Wednesday, August 19

St. Louis at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 p.m. EDT). The first place Cardinals finish off a three-game set with the NL West-leading Dodgers.

        STARS

        Tuesday

-Joe Mauer, Twins, homered twice to help Minnesota beat Texas 9-6.

-David Ortiz, Red Sox, homered and scored three times, including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to help Boston beat Toronto 10-9.

-Jamie Moyer, Phillies, pitched six scoreless innings in relief of Pedro Martinez after a rain delay, leading Philadelphia past Arizona 5-1.

-Derek Jeter, Yankees, had his third straight three-hit game in New York's 7-2 win over Oakland.

-Ryan Garko, Giants, hit a two-run double in the 10th inning to complete San Francisco's comeback from a four-run deficit in an 8-5 victory over Cincinnati.

-Chad Billingsley, Dodgers, allowed three hits over six innings and added an RBI single to help Los Angeles snap St. Louis' five-game winning streak with a 7-3 win.

        - Billy Butler, Royals, doubled three times, had two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run in Kansas City's 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.

-Ricky Nolasco, Marlins, struck out 10 in his second complete game of the season, leading Florida to a 6-2 win over Houston.

-Kyle Blanks, Padres, hit a two-run inside the park homer to help San Diego beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3.

        .300 CLUB

All nine Angels hitters in the starting lineup of their 5-4 win in Cleveland on Tuesday night are batting .300 or better for the season. It was close: Maicer Izturis went 1 for 4 and Mike Napoli needed to go 2 for 4 in order for both to finish right on .300.

        QUALITY FINISH

Jamie Moyer pitched six scoreless innings in relief of Pedro Martinez, who took his spot in the starting rotation, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 Tuesday night. Moyer hadn't appeared in relief since June 24, 2004, when he entered in the 15th inning of Seattle's 9-7 loss to Texas in 18 innings. He hasn't pitched regularly out of the bullpen since 1996 with Boston.

        LOW-HANGING FRUIT

The White Sox struggled again with the Kansas City Royals, falling 5-4 Tuesday night. The last-place Royals are 7-7 against the White Sox - and 40-65 against the rest of the major leagues.

        WELCOME BACK

CC Sabathia finally gave his friends and family a start to cheer about in Oakland, pitching eight sharp innings to win in Oakland for the first time in six years, leading the New York Yankees to a 7-2 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night. His last win in Oakland, near his childhood home of Vallejo, was July 30, 2003, with Cleveland.

        DYE ANOTHER DAY

On a night Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon arrived at the ballpark with his silver hair dyed black, Gabe Gross hit a two-run homer, and Pat Burrell and B.J. Upton added solo shots to lead the Rays past the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Tuesday. Maddon's color change was in preparation for next week's Johnny Cash-theme road trip, and was an attempt to keep his team loose. The Rays started Tuesday four games behind AL wild-card leader Texas.

        TEN AGAIN

Florida reached 10 hits for the 14th consecutive game on Tuesday night, in the Marlins' 6-2 win over the Houston Astros. Florida's streak of 10-hit games is the longest since the 1937 St. Louis Browns reached the total in 15 straight, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

        TURNAROUND

Gary Sheffield doubled twice in an eight-run fourth inning and the New York Mets battered Derek Lowe, rebounding from an early deficit for a 9-4 victory over the Braves on Tuesday night.

        SPEAKING

"At times we always preface our remarks by saying, 'For a big man.' I told him I'm not saying that anymore.'' - Padres manager Bud Black, after 6-foot-6, 285-pound Kyle Blanks scored on an inside-the-park homer in San Diego's 6-3 win over the Cubs.

"It was a fun night. You never know what you're going to get when you put two old goats out there. I enjoyed it.'' - Pedro Martinez, who was relived by Jamie Moyer after his start was cut short by a rain delay in Philadelphia's 5-1 win over Arizona on Tuesday night.

        SEASONS

        Aug. 19

1909 - The Philadelphia Phillies were rained out for the 10th consecutive day, a major league record.

1913 - The Chicago Cubs tagged Grover Alexander for nine straight hits and six runs for a 10-4 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1921 - Detroit's Ty Cobb got his 3,000th career hit at age 34, the youngest player to reach that plateau. The milestone hit was a single off Elmer Myers of the Boston Red Sox.

1951 - Eddie Gaedel, a 65-pound midget who was 3-foot-7, made his first and only plate appearance as a pinch-hitter for Frank Saucier of the St. Louis Browns. Gaedel wearing No. 1/8 was walked on four pitches by Detroit Tigers pitcher Bob Cain and then was taken out for pinch-runner Jim Delsing. The gimmick by Browns owner Bill Veeck was completely legal, but later outlawed.

1957 - New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham announced that the team's board of directors had voted 9-1 in favor of moving to San Francisco.

1965 - Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds no-hit the Cubs 1-0, in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Chicago. Leo Cardenas homered in the 10th for the Reds. Earlier in the year, Maloney lost 1-0 in 11 innings after holding the Mets hitless for 10 before Johnny Lewis homered leading off the 11th.

1969 - Ken Holtzman of the Cubs blanked the Atlanta Braves with a 3-0 no-hitter at Wrigley Field. Ron Santo's three-run homer in the first inning provided the Cubs' offense.

1990 - Bobby Thigpen recorded his 40th save as the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 4-2. Thigpen became the eighth - and fastest - to accomplish this feat.

1992 - Bret Boone made history when he became part of the first three-generation family to play in the major leagues. Boone is the grandson of Ray Boone, who played from 1948-60, and son of Bob Boone, who played from 1972-90. Bret, 23, started at second base for the Seattle Mariners against Baltimore.

2000 - Houston's Jeff Bagwell became the eighth player in major league history to record five straight seasons with 30 home runs, 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored. He hit two homers and drove in five runs in a 10-8 win over Milwaukee.

2002 - In a rare occurrence, all 10 major league games took less than three hours to play. The shortest was Bartolo Colon's two-hitter, which took just 1 hour, 55 minutes as Montreal defeated San Diego 4-0.

2005 - The Kansas City Royals dropped their 19th straight game, 4-0 to the Oakland Athletics, to move within two defeats of the American League record.

2007 - Johan Santana finished with a franchise-record 17 strikeouts in eight innings to help Minnesota edge Texas 1-0.

        Today's birthdays: J.J. Hardy 27; Lance Cormier 29

          This Day in Baseball

On August 19 in Baseball History...

1909 - The Philadelphia Phillies were rained out for the 10th consecutive day, a major league record.

1911 - The Reds finally get to Christy Mathewson after 22 straight losses, beating him for the first time since May, 1908. Matty, after saving the 5-4 opener, starts the nightcap, goes five innings, and loses 7-4.

1913 - The Chicago Cubs tagged Grover Alexander for nine straight hits and six runs in a 10-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1917 - Coaching third in a 1-1 game against Washington, Detroit's Ty Cobb gives Tiger base runner George Burns a shove when Burns stops at third on a long hit. Burns keeps going and scores the winning run for the Tigers. Clark Griffith protests, and Ban Johnson upholds him; the rules now ban coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed, and Washington wins 2-0.

1921 - Ty Cobb gets hit number 3,000 off Boston pitcher Elmer Myers. At 34, he's the youngest ever to do so.

1931 - Lefty Grove wins his 16th consecutive game, tying the American League record set by Walter Johnson and Joe Wood in 1912.

1941 - Umpire Jocko Conlan ejects Pittsburgh Pirates manager Frankie Frisch from the second game of a doubleheader when he appears on the field with an umbrella to protest the playing conditions at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. The rainy argument is later portrayed in a famous oil painting by artist Norman Rockwell.

1945 - In the second game of a doubleheader against the Reds, 37-year-old slugger Jimmie Foxx pitches the first seven innings for Philadelphia. He leaves with a 4-1 lead, and Andy Karl saves Foxx's only major league decision. His ERA in 10 major league appearances is 1.52.

1951 - In his most interesting promotional stunt, Bill Veeck signs a three-foot, seven-inch midget, Eddie Gaedel, who goes to bat wearing the number 1/8 in the first inning of the nightcap with the Tigers. Lefty Bob Cain laughingly walks him on four pitches. Jim Delsing then pinch runs. Two days later the commissioner bars Eddie Gaedel from appearing in any more games.

1957 - New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham announced that the team's board of directors had voted 9-1 in favor of moving to San Francisco.

1965 - Reds pitcher Jim Maloney's second no-hit effort of 1965 is another 0-0 duel through nine innings, until Reds shortstop Leo Cardenas homers off the left field foul pole in the tenth at Wrigley Field. Jim Maloney's sets a no-hit record by allowing ten walks. He also fans twelve in Cincinnati's 1-0 win.

1969 - Ken Holtzman of the Cubs blanked the Atlanta Braves with a 3-0 no-hitter at Wrigley Field. Ron Santo's three-run homer in the first inning provided the Cubs' offense.

1990 - Bobby Thigpen recorded his 40th save as the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 4-2. Thigpen became the eighth — and fastest — to accomplish this feat.

1992 - Bret Boone made history when he became part of the first three-generation family to play in major league baseball. Boone is the grandson of Ray Boone, who played from 1948-60, and son of Bob Boone, from 1972-90. Bret, 23, started at second base for the Seattle Mariners against Baltimore.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers

The Tigers added some insurance to their slim two-game lead over the American League Central by adding slugger Aubrey Huff to the lineup in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday.

Huff, who is hitting .253 with 13 home runs this season, will settle into the designated hitter spot in Detroit’s lineup. The veteran infielder should give the Tigers offense some extra pop heading into the final month of the season and playoffs. Detroit currently ranks 16th in the majors in average runs (4.62) and 22nd in batting average (.258).

"He adds another lefthanded bat to our ballclub and is a middle-of-the-lineup type hitter," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters. "We've worked on trying to get a bat for a while."

The Tigers have played under the total in three of their last four games as of Monday. But for the month, they have an over/under record of 11-5. Heading into Tuesday, Detroit and Seattle have also played over the posted total in 10 of their last 13 games in the Motor City, including going 2-1 over/under in April.

                Pick: Over

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets

Mets third baseman David Wright joined fellow superstars Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado on the disabled list after taking a fastball to the head this past weekend.

Wright, who had never been on the 15-day DL in his six-year MLB career, suffered a concussion Saturday and isn’t sure when he’ll be cleared to play by team doctors.

Wright was one player keeping the injury-prone Mets afloat for most of the season. He was hitting a team-best .324 BA with eight home runs and 55 RBI along with solid play in the infield. Now, without the All-Star third baseman, New York’s lineup features bats like Fernando Tatis, Dan Murphy and Anderson Hernandez.

The futile offense was outscored 10-1 Monday by the San Francisco Giants, who are one of the worst hitting teams in the majors. In the four games against the Giants, the Mets scored just 11 runs and are hitting a combined .267 in August heading into Tuesday’s game with Atlanta. The Braves open this series with a 4-1 mark in their last five games against New York.

                Pick: Atlanta

                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Adam Wainwright (14-7, 2.62 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

If it weren’t for Tim Lincecum, Wainwright would be the frontrunner for this year’s National League Cy Young award.

The towering righty has gone 10 straight starts without surrendering more than two earned runs. He hasn’t walked a batter in his last three starts and he leads the NL with 14 wins.

                  Need more?

He’s pitched at least six innings in each of his last 23 starts. The Cards have also won seven of his last eight outings.

Cliff Lee (10-9, 2.86 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

                  Halladay who?

This former Cleveland ace is loving life in the Senior Circuit. The Phillies have won each of Lee’s three starts and the southpaw owns a sparkling 1.13 ERA with his new club.

He’s pitching deep into games and is striking out batters by the handful. The under has cashed in seven of his last eight appearances and he still hasn’t been priced higher than -170.

                  Slumping

Jose Contreras (4-11, 5.40 ERA), Chicago White Sox

Is there any pitcher in baseball less deserving of a $10 million price tag?

The Cuban product hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning since July 24. He got dinged for six runs over 4 1-3 innings last time out and he hasn’t produced a quality start since the beginning of last month.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Baseball betting's best under umps
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Betting baseball’s boys in blue is a seldom-used practice that can lead to huge profits, especially when wagering on MLB totals.

The umpires working the lowest-scoring games come in all categories - big and small, young and experienced, argumentative and passive.

However, the ones at the top of the list are providing consistent returns better than any team totals play on either side. The best are operating at nearly 75 percent.

There are nearly seven weeks left in the season, leaving plenty of time to track the men in blue with the best under records and collect a little coin.

We used a cutoff of 20 games, so honorable mention goes to Brian Runge, the only third-generation umpire in history who worked Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter. The under is 14-5 when Runge is behind the plate.

                    James Hoye (Seven years)

The least experienced of the group with seven years (He was a substitute ump for five years), Hoye was a computer science major who once drove a beer truck in the offseason.

Hoye has the highest average total of anyone on this list at 8.6 runs. But that is a very low number league-wide. The under is 19-8 when Hoye works the plate, including 7-1 when the number is 8.5 or lower.

                    Jeff Kellogg (16 years)

The under is 17-8 with Kellogg, who called Anibal Sanchez's no-hitter in September 2006. He also worked last year's World Series.

Kellogg's strike percentage of 61.0 is the lowest of any umpire who has been behind the plate at least 20 times. That's somewhat odd considering he also is tied for the lowest average total of 7.8 runs.

                    John Hirschbeck (25 years)

The only crew chief in this group, Hirschbeck and brother Mark were umps from 1988-2003, the first set of umpiring brothers. He is best known for get spat on by Roberto Alomar during a heated argument in 2006.

Hirschbeck has worked two World Series and also was behind the plate for Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th home run. He is tied for the best under mark at 17-6.

                    Andy Fletcher (Nine years)

The only ump to wear a mouthguard to protect against concussions, Fletcher gave Coco Crisp a three-ball walk about a year ago. However, he also is credited with using Terry Francona as a conduit to teach a hopeful minor leaguer named Michael Jordan how to respectfully disagree with umps while working in the Southern League in the 1990s.

Fletcher, who has never worked the postseason, is tied with Kellogg for the lowest total average at 7.8 runs. When he works the plate, those games average just 1.40 homers, the second-lowest mark. Both of those stats help contribute to his under mark of 15-7.

                    Ted Barrett (12 years)

A former amateur boxer and devout Christian (How's that for a dichotomy?), Barrett is one of the best young umpires in the game, working six Division Series, an ALCS and a World Series. In his first full season, he called David Cone's perfect game in 1999.

Barrett is tied with Hirschbeck for the best under mark at 17-6, including a 5-1 record when the number is 8.5 runs or lower. His 8.1 average runs are second-lowest among this group and his average homers (1.58) is third behind Fletcher and Larry Vanover (1.38).

As an added bonus, Barrett and Fletcher have worked in the same crew many times this season.

Minnesota Twins at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Twins: Minnesota has struggled since the All-Star break going 12-18. The Twins need a big game from Scott Baker (10-7, 4.54 ERA) since their last three starters only went a combined 12 1/3 innings leaving their bullpen with a high fatigue rating. Baker delivered in his last performance, giving up two hits in shutting out Cleveland, 11-0, last Friday. However, in his previous outing the right-hander was tagged for six runs on nine hits by the Tigers in just 4 1/3 innings. Baker is 1-0 versus the Rangers this season, allowing one run in eight innings. Minnesota is 7-3 in Baker’s last 10 starts versus a team with a winning record. The Twins could be without three-time All-Star Justin Morneau. He missed Tuesday’s victory against the Rangers because of an inner ear infection. The Twins are 11-1-1 to the over in their last 13 road contests.

The Twins are 3-7 in their past 10 away matchups versus a team with a winning record.
The Over is 9-1 in Minnesota’s past 10 away games when facing a right-handed starter.

Keey Injuries - Justin Morneau (ear) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Rangers (-$1.40, O/U 9): Texas has won 17 of its last 23 games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Texas is 7-3 in its last 10 home contests versus a right-handed starter. Outfielder Josh Hamilton has been hot batting .500 in his last eight games with eight RBIs, six runs scored and six doubles. Kevin Millwood (9-7, 3.31 ERA) has struggled in his career when facing Minnesota. He’s 0-6 with a 6.00 ERA in 10 lifetime starts against the Twins. He is the only pitcher not to get a victory against the Twins with at least 10 starts against them. Millwood is holding lefties to a .217 batting average, but right-handers are batting .281 against him. The veteran right-hander is 2-3 with a 4.68 ERA during his last nine overall starts. Millwood is 7-1 at home with a 2.46 ERA in 12 starts. The Rangers are 21-8 in Millwood’s last 29 home outings.

The Under is 45-18-2 in Texas’ last 65 games.
The Under is 12-4-1 in Millwood’s last 17 home starts.

Key Injuries - Jarrod Saltalamacchia (arm) is on the DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Cardinals: Adam Wainwright doesn’t draw much Cy Young talk, but Wainwright has been as steady as any pitcher going 14-7 with a 2.62 ERA. Wainwright has gone at least six innings in 23 consecutive starts. St. Louis is 24-4 in his last 28 starts when facing a team above .500. The Cardinals also are 25-10 in Wainwright’s past 35 road outings. St. Louis is 9-2 in its last 11 games, winning five of their last six. The Cardinals are 9-4 in their last 13 road meetings against the Dodgers. The under has cashed four of the past five times the teams have met at Dodger Stadium. Albert Pujols has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, with five homers and 13 RBIs during the streak. Matt Holliday has five homers and 22 RBIs, while batting above .430 since joining St. Louis following a July 24 trade with Oakland.

The Over is 10-3-2 in Wainwright’s last 15 road starts.

Key Injuries - Troy Glaus (back) is on the DL.
                          Colby Rasmus (tonsils) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-$1.20, O/U 7.5 -$1.30): The Dodgers are having trouble producing runs lately. They have dropped seven of their last 11 games, scoring two runs or fewer in each of their defeats. The Dodgers have been held to under four runs in four of their last six games. Manny Ramirez is 2-for-16 in his last three games. He has only four RBIs in his last 11 games. The Dodgers are 2-4 versus the Cardinals this year. Clayton Kershaw (8-7, 2.91 ERA) gave up more than three earned runs in his last start for the first time since May 12. The Diamondbacks got to him for four runs in 4 1/3 innings last Friday. Kershaw struck out nine, but allowed six hits and four walks. Prior to that, Kershaw hadn’t surrendered more than two earned runs in 10 of his previous 11 appearances. Los Angeles is 0-5 in Kershaw’s past five starts.

The Under has cashed 12 of the last 16 times the Dodgers have hosted a team with a winning road mark.

Key Injuries - Matt Kemp (flu) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (OVER - Total of the Day)

If Tips and Trends fixes their little screw-up, we'll post it again. You have to figure they meant SOD is Rangers and TOD is under. We'll see.
