    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, August 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The PGA Championship hits its final round, the Sprint Cup Series runs at Michigan, and the Braves take on the rival Phillies.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL's preseason slate takes Sunday off this week, but the league will be back on Monday with Jacksonville at Miami (-3) and Carolina at the Giants (-3).

There is one football game on tap for Sunday, though, as Hamilton travels to Saskatchewan to play the Roughriders in Canadian Football League action. The Tigers-Cats are the league's biggest surprise at 4-2 straight-up and 5-1 against-the-spread this season, while the Riders sit at 3-3 both SU and ATS in six games. Oddsmakers have Saskatchewan as a 6-point home favorite for Sunday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Sunday Night Baseball game this week has Philadelphia at Atlanta, with the Phillies' J.A. Happ (8-2, 2.75 ERA) taking the mound against the Braves' Javier Vazquez (10-7, 2.90 ERA). Lefthander Happ has given up just four earned runs over his last three starts (21 innings), with Philly going 2-1 in those contests. Atlanta is 8-2 over Vazquez's last 10 starts. Happ and Vazquez matched up back on July 2, with both of those pitchers taking no-decisions in a 5-2 win by Atlanta.

Also on the National League schedule for Sunday: San Francisco at the Mets, Washington at Cincinnati, Houston at Milwaukee, San Diego at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Colorado at Florida, and the Dodgers at Arizona. Los Angeles will go with Randy Wolf (6-6, 3.43 ERA) in that contest; lefthander Wolf beat the Giants in his most recent trip to the mound. The D-Backs counter with Yusmeiro Petit (2-6, 5.87 ERA); the righthander was beaten by the Nats last start.

Meanwhile, the AL's Sunday slate features Kansas City at Detroit, the Angels at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Boston at Texas, Cleveland at Minnesota, the White Sox at Oakland, and the Yankees at Seattle. Joba Chamberlain (8-2, 3.85 ERA) will make the Sunday start for the Bronx Bombers; New York has won each of his last five outings. The Mariners will go with Doug Fister (0-0, 0.00 ERA); the righthander has tossed seven scoreless innings to begin his big-league career.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series are at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the Carfax 400. Points leader Tony Stewart is the 4/1 Vegas favorite to take the checkered flag at the event, with Jimmie Johnson right behind him on that odds list at 5/1. Denny Hamlin is then pegged at 6/1, followed by Mark Martin at 8/1; Martin visited victory lane in the LifeLock 400 at Michigan earlier in the year. Carl Edwards won this race last year; he's listed at 15/1 odds.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There's just one game on the WNBA's schedule for Sunday, with Washington playing host to New York. Both the Mystics and the Liberty were last in action on Friday night, with Washington beating Connecticut 91-89 in double-overtime and New York falling 88-77 to Chicago. The Mystics and Liberty last met on July 30 in New York, with Washington holding on for a 78-75 road victory. Alana Beard had 28 points for Washington in that win; Janel McCarville scored 28 for the Liberty.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the 2009 PGA Championship wraps up on Sunday, with Tiger Woods holding a two-shot lead on both Padraig Harrington and Y.E. Yang. Woods shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday, while Yang made his move with a 5-under 67. Henrik Stenson and Lucas Glover are tied for fourth at the tourney, four back of Woods.

      Six-pack for Sunday

Taking a look at teams in the ACC's Coastal Division

-- Virginia Tech-- Hokies play Bama, Nebraska, Miami in September; they've got nine starters back on offense, seven on defense-- offensive line has 90 starts back. Hokies covered 7 of last 10 as an underdog.

-- Miami-- Most experienced OL they've had in while, but QB Harris has only two starts. 8 starters back on offense, 7 on defense, but their schedule is nasty, opening with FSU-Ga Tech-Va Tech-Oklahoma.

-- Georgia Tech-- 18 starters back for team that ran ball for 273 yards a game LY, Johnson's first at Tech. Four starters are back on OL, so this team should be ever better this season. 12-3 as road dog since '04.

-- North Carolina-- Five of top six WRs graduated, but they've got nine starters back on defense, three more on OL. Are just 8-17 as favorite at home this decade. UNC 0-2 vs State since O'Brien got to Raleigh.

-- Virginia-- Only 11 starters back for team whose last three bowl tilts were all decided by three points, with an average total of 65. A senior QB with 22 starts and four starters back on OL are a positive sign.

-- Duke-- 15 players came down with swine flu this week for program whose last bowl was in 1990, last bowl win in '60. Senior QB with 33 starts, but three new starters on OL. 4-15 as home dog since 2005.

Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Tough day for ballplayers getting hit in the head; David Wright got drilled by a 94-mile-an-hour fastball; Hiroki Kurooda got drilled in head by a batted ball. Wright walked off the field, Kuroda didn't. Both went to the hospital for observation-- we wish them well.

      12) The ball that hit Kuroda became the shortest ground-rule double in baseball history-- it ricocheted off Kuroda's head and went in the stands behind home plate on the fly. Scary thing to see.

      11) A's Adam Kennedy is first player since 1941 to go 5-5 in a game in which his team scored zero or one run. 19-freakin'-41. Rajai Davis had a couple hits batting behind Kennedy, but Kennedy didn't score a run.

      10) Twins' Orlando Cabrera is hitting well (.284 BA) but he's one of the guys that hits .284 with a .319 OB%, so he's not helping all that much.

      9) Then there's Matt Holliday, who is batting .475 as a Cardinal, with an unlikely .505 OB%. Imagine what he'd hit batting ahead of Pujols.

      8) Carl Crawford is up to .320 with an OB% of .377 and he never bunts, which would add 30-40 points to his average, easily, with his speed.

      7) Buffalo Bills are using a no-huddle offense this season.

      6) Cleveland Browns got shut out, so neither Anderson or Quinn got the leg up on that QB derby-- wouldn't be completely stunned if Brett Ratliff wound up starting there- he was impressive last summer for Jets.

      5) Carson Palmer sprained his left ankle against the Saints Friday, so it is doubtful we'll see a whole lot of him next week against the Patriots.

      4) Lions won their preseason opener 27-26 against Atlanta but they had a 4-0 preseason last year, then went 0-16 when it counted. Like the new uniforms though-- they look pretty sharp.

      3) Chiefs' first five series resulted in 18 plays, 42 yards. Texans scored on their second possession, a 94-yard drive. Texans went 16-16 in last two seasons despite a -23 turnover ratio-- they're a good sleeper team.

      2) Nationals have until Monday to sign Stephen Strasburg, the fireballer from San Diego State; if they don't sign him, they'll get a top-10 pick in the next draft, then the kid will have three options-- Japan, independent league ball, or back to college for another year. Actually if he doesn't get signed, he should fire his scumweasel, money-grubbing agent.

      1) As far as golf goes, Eldrick Woods=Globetrotters; the other 143 guys in the tournament=Washington Generals.

HAMILTON TIGER CATS AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (-5, 52.5)

It’s an interesting showdown in Regina between these surprising squads who lead the CFL in points against after six games. Not exactly what they are used to in Saskatchewan. DeAndra Cobb is a solid running back and he should inflict some damage to the Riders but I doubt that it will be enough. Hamilton this season has played with discipline avoiding giving costly turnovers or taking bad penalties. The Roughriders should make note of that, especially after last week when QB Darian Durant threw two interceptions in a 35-20 loss to B.C. Home advantage should be a big factor in this one.

        Pick: Saskatchewan -5

          SCOREBOARD

          Sunday, August 16

Houston at Milwaukee (2:05 p.m. EDT). The Astros' Roy Oswalt (6-4, 3.87 ERA) and Brewers' Braden Looper (10-6, 4.99 ERA) face off as the teams try to gain ground in the NL Central.

          STARS

          Saturday

-Julio Borbon, Rangers, had four hits and four of Texas' club-record eight stolen bases in a 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.

-Nick Swisher, Yankees, hit a two-run homer and New York beat the Seattle Mariners 5-2 for their 12th win in 13 games.

-Bengie Molina, Giants, homered in the 10th inning to give San Francisco a 5-4 victory at the New York Mets.

-Brian McCann, Braves, hit a two-run homer in Atlanta's 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

-John Lackey, Angels, allowed one run in seven innings and Los Angeles beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 at Camden Yards.

-Mark Reynolds and Miguel Montero, Diamondbacks, hit back-to-back homers off Jonathan Broxton in the ninth and Arizona rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in 10 innings.

-Carl Crawford, Rays, hit a two-run double during Tampa Bay's four-run third and the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3 to end a five-game skid.

-Carlos Guillen, Tigers, homered and drove in four runs in Detroit's 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

-Matt Holliday, Cardinals, hit a two-run homer to power St. Louis to a 7-4 victory over the San Diego Padres.

-Tom Gorzelanny, Cubs, struck out eight in five effective innings, helping Chicago to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

-Adrian Gonzalez, Padres, had three hits, including his 31st home run, in San Diego's 7-4 loss at St. Louis.

-Mike Burns, Brewers, pitched seven solid innings and Milwaukee beat the Houston Astros 6-2 for its third straight victory.

-Alberto Gonzalez and Elijah Dukes, Nationals, each had two hits and three RBIs in Washington's 10-6 win at the Cincinnati Reds.

-Gavin Floyd, White Sox, pitched seven strong innings to help Chicago to an 8-1 win at the Oakland Athletics.

          OUCH

Mets slugger David Wright, Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler all got hit in the head with the ball. Wright and Kuroda each sustained a concussion and were expected to spend Saturday night in the hospital. Wright was hit squarely in the helmet by a 94 mph fastball from Giants starter Matt Cain. Kuroda was hit by Arizona pinch-hitter Rusty Ryal's line drive. Kinsler stayed in after he was hit in the helmet by Boston's Fernando Cabrera in the eighth.

          THAT'S STEALING

The Texas Rangers set a club record with eight steals in a 7-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The eight stolen bases matched the most in the majors this season. Boston also allowed eight against Tampa Bay on May 3. Julio Borbon swiped four bags, Elvis Andrus finished with three and Ian Kinsler had the other one. The Rangers also stole six bases against the Red Sox on July 22.

          SWEET

Adam Dunn hit his first homer against his former team, leading the Washington Nationals to a 10-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Dunn, known for his tape-measure shots to right field, started the second with a drive that barely reached the first row of seats in left. Dunn made his major league debut with Cincinnati in 2001 and was one of the club's regular outfielders until he was traded to Arizona last August. He signed with Washington in the offseason.

          IN THE FOLD

The Florida Marlins reached an agreement with left-hander Chad James, the 18th overall pick in the June draft, that includes a $1.7 million signing bonus. Rob Martin, James' agent, said his client passed a physical and will sign the deal Monday in Oklahoma City.

          WORTH NOTING

Brad Lidge committed two errors on one play and picked up his eighth blown save in Philadelphia's 4-3 loss at Atlanta. ... St. Louis has won seven of eight and is a season-high 14 games over .500. ... The New York Yankees have won five straight and 12 of 13. ... Minnesota is 4-10 in its last 14 games. Half of those losses have come to the Indians and Royals, teams already looking ahead to next season.

          SPEAKING

"I'm just happy that the losing streak is over. I'm glad we were able to get the win because we needed it. Everybody came and did their job. Usually when we're all clicking like this we're a pretty tough team to beat.'' - Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford after the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays to end a five-game skid.

          SEASONS

          Aug. 16

1920 - Shortstop Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians was hit in the head with a pitch in the fifth inning by New York's Carl Mays. Chapman suffered a fractured skull and died the next day. It was the only on-field fatality in major league history.

1927 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees became the first player to clear the roof at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Ruth's home run came off White Sox pitcher Tommy Thomas in the 8-1 win.

1947 - Ralph Kiner hit three successive home runs to become the first Pirates player to accomplish the feat as Pittsburgh beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12-7 at Forbes Field.

1948 - Babe Ruth died of cancer in New York, at the age of 53.

1950 - Hank Thompson hit two inside-the-park home runs in the Giants' 16-7 rout of the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds.

1964 - Curt Flood of the St. Louis Cardinals had eight straight hits in a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers won the first game 3-0 and the Cardinals took the second, 4-0.

1967 - Jim Maloney of Cincinnati retired 19 consecutive Pirates but had to leave the game after he injured his ankle by stepping in a hole at Forbes Field. Billy McCool allowed two hits over the final 2 2-3 innings to give the Reds a 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh.

1996 - With 23,699 fans at the 25,644-seat Estadio Monterrey, the San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets 15-10 in the first major league regular-season game played outside the United States or Canada.

2005 - Bobby Bragan became the oldest manager of a pro baseball game when the 87-year-old guided the Fort Worth Cats of the Central League for one game against Coastal Bend. Hall of Famer Connie Mack previously held the record, but Bragan eclipsed Mack by eight days. Bragan was tossed out of the game in the third inning after he went on the field following the ejection of a player.

2006 - Bruce Froemming umpired his 5,000th major league game - second-most in big league history. Bill Klem worked 5,374 games from 1905-40.

Today's birthdays: Daric Barton 24; Matt Harrison 24; Ryan Hanigan 29

            This Day in Baseball

On August 16 in Baseball History...

1873 - At Baltimore's Newington Park, Baltimore Canaries outfielder Lip Pike races against a horse. Pike has a short lead after 75 yards when the trotter breaks into a run. Pike holds on to win in 10 seconds flat.

1890 - It's a bad day for Pittsburgh's Bill Phillips as he becomes the only pitcher in major league history to give up two grand slams in one inning. Tom Burns and Malachi Kittridge each hit one in the fifth inning en route to an 18-5 victory at Chicago's West Side Park.

1920 - At the Polo Grounds Cleveland shortstop Ray Chapman, 29, is beaned by a Carl Mays pitch. A right-handed batter who crowds the plate, Chapman freezes and fails to get out of the way of the submarine delivery. He is carried from the field and he dies the next day from a fractured skull.

1927 - Babe Ruth inaugurates the newly-constructed Comiskey Park grandstand roof by cranking a Tommy Thomas pitch over the addition.

1947 - Ralph Kiner hits three successive home runs for the Pittsburgh Pirates, for a 12-7 win over the Cardinals in a game in which the two clubs bang out 10 homers. Kiner matches the major league marks of seven home runs in four games, six in three games, five in two games, and four in consecutive at bats.

1950 - Hank Thompson hit two inside-the-park home runs in the Giants' 16-7 rout of the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds.

1954 - In a throwing contest between Jim Piersall and Willie Mays before a Red Sox-Giants charity game in Boston, Piersall hurts his arm. He starts the game but leaves midway. He wakes up the following morning with a sore arm that stays with him a year, and he will never throw quite as well again.

1964 - Curt Flood of the St. Louis Cardinals had eight straight hits in a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers won the first game 3-0 and the Cardinals took the second, 4-0.

1964 - Sandy Koufax (19-5) hurts his elbow sliding into second base in a 3-0 win against St. Louis. He will miss the rest of the season. In the nightcap, Curt Simmons matches Sandy Koufax with a 4-0 shutout of the Dodgers. Cards center fielder Curt Flood has eight straight hits in the doubleheader split.

1966 - Willie Mays hits his 534th home run, matching Jimmie Foxx's record for right-handed batters, as Gaylord Perry beats the Cardinals 3-1.

1967 - Jim Maloney of Cincinnati retired 19 consecutive Pirates but had to leave the game after he injured his ankle by stepping in a hole at Forbes Field. Billy McCool allowed two hits over the final 2 2/3 innings to complete a 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh.

1976 - With the help of three picked-off Oakland runners at first base, the first such occurrence in the American League since 1910, the Brewers beat Oakland 4-3. Another oddity happens when Oakland's Billy Williams is called out on strikes after refusing to enter the batter's box. He is then thrown out of the game.

1984 - After nearly six years, Pete Rose is reunited with his hometown Cincinnati Reds when the Expos trade him for infielder Tom Lawless. The Reds immediately name him player-manager, replacing Vern Rapp.

1996 - The Padres and Mets play the first regular season major league game ever played in Mexico, and it isn't pretty. The Padres take a big lead in support of Mexican native and starting pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, but the Mets close the gap with seven runs in the ninth inning in a 15-10 Padres triumph. The series is moved from San Diego because of a perceived conflict with the Republican National Convention. The Padres take two of three games in "La Primera Serie" in Monterrey, Mexico.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners (+172, 8.5)

The New York Yankees are running at full speed this month – posting an 11-2 record heading into Saturday. It seems like nothing can slow the club down, besides maybe injuries.

The long MLB schedule is starting to wear on the Yankees. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who is hitting .273 BA with five RBI in August, was scratched from Friday’s game due to back spasms. Rodriguez missed the series opener Thursday because of a bruised elbow.

"I've never had a pain like that in my back," Rodriguez told the Daily News. "I went down and I was dizzy a little bit. I kind of braced myself. I didn't really feel it until an hour later. I was thinking about (the elbow). ... Hopefully I'll be ready to go (this weekend)."

A-Rod isn’t the only player in pinstripes feeling aches and pains. Shortstop Derek Jeter missed time this week with a bruised right foot after getting hit by a pitch. He was back in the lineup the past two games, going 3-for-8 with a home run and two RBI.

Even Sunday’s starter Joba Chamberlain is feeling a little worn out. He was supposed to skip his spot in the rotation this week to rest but will go against the Mariners to help ease the bullpen’s work load. Chamberlain has pitched 121 2-3 innings this season and is close to surpassing the work limit the club set for him this season.

                Pick: Mariners +172

San Francisco Giants at New York Mets (+105, 8.5)

Giants veteran shortstop Edgar Renteria is pulling a page out of Ozzie Guillen’s playbook. He put the word out to opposing pitchers that San Fran slugger Pablo Sandoval would not be bullied.

"I think they're trying to scare Pablo because he's young," Renteria told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I told Pablo already, 'You're such a good hitter. You can't be intimidated by anybody or you'll never hit again.' If they do something to him, we have to do something. I'm not talking for the skipper. I'm talking for myself."

Those comments came after Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher James McDonald hit Sandoval with a pitch, prompting an infield mêlée between the NL West rivals. Renteria barreled out of the Giants dugout and went toe-to-toe with Dodgers catcher Russell Martin.

Renteria went on to say that the San Francisco pitching staff should take it upon themselves to protect the club’s lone big bat and go after opponents’ top hitters if they try to intimidate the burly infielder.

The scare tactics might be working. Sandoval is batting .340 BA in August, but in the past week he is hitting just .208 BA and has no home runs or RBI. San Francisco has lost five of seven and is averaging only 2.5 runs in that span.

                Pick: Under 8.5

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Aaron Laffey (Cleveland Indians)

The left-hander is emerging as the staff ace since the departure of Cliff Lee.

Laffey has not allowed an earned run in three of his last four starts, going 3-1 in that span without surrendering a homer.

Despite being roughed up by the Los Angeles Angels July 29, Laffey has a 2.10 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in his last four outings. He is 2-0 this year vs. Minnesota, his opponent today.

                  J.A. Happ (Philadelphia Phillies)

The Phillies have the best road record in baseball and Happ is a key to their success.

In his last five road starts, the left-hander has pitched at least six innings without allowing more than two earned runs and deserves better than his 2-1 mark in that span.

Happ has a 1.54 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP in his last five road starts, twice holding his oppoonent scoreless while allowing just two homers in 35 innings.

                  Justin Lehr (Cincinnati Reds)

The journeyman right-hander doesn't have a huge body of work, having made just three starts. But he's been very good in the last two.

Lehr tossed a four-hit shutout against the Cubs, then followed up by somehow dancing around 11 hits and a walk in six innings, allowing just one run in a win over Albert Pujols and the Cardinals. He has walked just two in his last 15 innings.

With Edinson Volquez out for the season and Johnny Cueto slumping, the Reds should be taking a long look at Lehr for the rest of the season.

                  Slumping

                  Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles)

The right-hander won his first start after the All-Star break and has not won since.

Guthrie has lost four in a row, giving up hits, homers and walks in bunches. During his recent stumble, he had allowed 34 hits, five homers and eight walks in 25 1-3 innings.

Guthrie has given up season highs in hits twice in his last three starts.

                  Nick Blackburn (Minnesota Twins)

There apparently will be no second-half surge by the Twins this season, who have tumbled out of contention partially due to Blackburn's poor pitching.

The right-hander won his last two starts before the All-Star break, but the Twins are 0-5 in his second-half starts. Blackburn is 0-3 and has worked almost exclusively as a favorite, costing bettors.

In this awful stretch, Blackburn has an ERA of 8.87 and a WHIP of 1.93. He has allowed 12 hits in one start, 13 in another and lasted a season-low 1 2-3 innings in another.

                  Rich Harden (Chicago Cubs)

The bottom line is the Cubs have lost the right-hander's last three starts. But that doesn't tell the whole story.

Harden is just 0-1 in that stretch while receiving a measly five runs of support. His ERA is 3.00, his WHIP is 1.11 and he has 26 strikeouts in 18 innings.

The Cubs have not lost four straight games started by Harden all season.

Sunday Night Baseball: Phillies at Braves
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves (-120, 8)

A key clash in the National League East pennant chase takes center stage when Atlanta hosts Philadelphia at Turner Field Sunday night.

The Braves send surging right-hander Javier Vazquez (10-7 2.90 ERA) to the hill against left-handed Philly phenom J.A. Happ (8-2 2.75 ERA).

                    Trading places

Braves 1B Andy LaRoche was traded twice at midseason, first from Atlanta to Boston and then back to Atlanta. He played in six games for the Red Sox, batting .263 BA with a homer, two doubles and three RBI.

The Red Sox decided they needed Victor Martinez and were willing to re-ship LaRoche back to Atlanta as part of a three-way deal.

"I feel like I've never left this place," LaRoche told reporters. "For the most part, it just feels like I took a break and came back. I'm never sure anymore.”

LaRoche went on to elaborate, saying "I'm not unpacking yet. But I think with the deadline past, chances are pretty good that I'm staying here."

                    Francisco treat

When Philly OF Ben Francisco homered to lead off the 12th inning against Cubs closer Kevin Gregg in a 4-3 Philadelphia victory over Chicago Tuesday night, it put more than a smile on manager Charlie Manuel’s face.

Gregg had entered the contest with a 0.79 career ERA against the Phils. Francisco was acquired along with LHP Cliff Lee in a trade with the Indians just prior to the trade deadline last month.

“He can play all three outfield positions, and he can spell any of those guys out there,” Manuel beamed, referring to Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth. “I’m going to try and get him in the lineup when I can.”

                    Alternative measures

An array of injuries to the Philadelphia pitching staff signaled the acquisitions of Lee and veteran right-hander Pedro Martinez.

Former starters Antonio Bastardo (strained left shoulder) and Brett Myers (torn labrum in right hip), along with relief pitcher J.C. Romero (left forearm strain), all currently reside on the DL.

Neither Bastardo nor Myers figures to rejoin to the starting lineup when they return. Romero’s return this season is uncertain.

                    Nate the Great

Braves CF Nate McLouth was back in the starting lineup for the series opener Friday.

McLouth has missed four starts and three entire games with a sore left hamstring. He was acquired from Pittsburgh on June 3. His bat is critical to Atlana’s hopes of catching Philadelphia in the NL East.

An All-Star last season, McLouth is on pace for a 20-homer/20-stolen base campaign.

                    Choose your weapon

Despite rumors of him headed to the bullpen with the recent acquisition of Martinez, Happ remains in Philadelphia’s starting rotation.

The rookie has pitched like a veteran and continues to impress. He threw 100 pitches in six inning of work in a 4-3 win at Chicago Tuesday night.

Happ has cashed in four of his last six team starts, sporting a 2.19 ERA along the way. He has developed an interesting pitching pattern this season.

In his nine road starts, the Phillies are 5-4, going W-L-W-L-W-L-W-L-W, the most recent W being the victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Vazquez picked up his seventh straight team start win in his most recent effort, an 8-2 win at Los Angeles last Sunday.

He owns a sharp 3.17 ERA in his last seven contests, issuing nine walks against 46 strikeouts in those games.

With the victory over the Dodgers, Vazquez reached double digits in wins for the 10th consecutive season. He also has at least 150 strikeouts for the 10th year in a row.

He has thrown 98 or more pitches in all but two of his 23 starts this season. His 171 strikeouts are the second-most in the NL behind Tim Lincecum's 198 for the Giants. In 155.3 innings of work this season, Vazquez has issued only 35 walks.

While it’s tough to fade a Philadelphia squad that owns the best road mark in the Big Leagues and is 13-3 away on Sundays, look for form to prevail over function Sunday.
