    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, August 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NFL offers up four more preseason games, the PGA Championship continues, and the D-Backs take on the Dodgers.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are four more NFL preseason games on the schedule for Friday night, with Minnesota at Indianapolis, St. Louis at the Jets, Cincinnati at New Orleans, and Denver at San Francisco. The Saints and Niners are both pegged as 3-point home favorites in their preseason openers, with the Jets listed as 3.5-point favorites. Meanwhile, the Vikings/Colts line has swung in the road team's favor, with Minnesota now giving 1 point to the home team. Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will be battling for the Vikings' top quarterback spot in the preseason.

As well, the Canadian Football League has a single game on the schedule for Friday, with British Columbia at Toronto. The Lions and Argonauts both sit at the bottom of their respective division standings at 2-4 straight-up (and 2-4 against-the-spread) through six weeks. Oddsmakers, though, like B.C.'s chances on the road on Friday, as they're a 3-point favorite. The total for the game is 46.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Roy Halladay (12-5, 2.73 ERA) vs. James Shields (7-8, 3.79 ERA) on Friday night as the Blue Jays begin a series in Tampa Bay. Righthander Halladay got back into the win column last time out, holding the Orioles to two earned runs over eight innings of work; Toronto had lost his previous three starts. Righthander Shields is also coming off a victory, as he surrendered three earned runs on eight hits over 5 1-3 innings in his start against the Mariners on Saturday.

Also on the American League schedule for Friday: the Angels at Baltimore, Kansas City at Detroit, Cleveland at Minnesota, the White Sox at Oakland, the Yankees at Seattle, and Boston at Texas. Jon Lester (9-7, 3.67 ERA) will start for the Red Sox; the lefthander has allowed just six earned runs over his last three starts (all no-decisions). The Rangers counter with Kevin Millwood (9-7, 3.38 ERA); the righthander beat the Angels last outing, allowing two runs in six innings.

Meanwhile, the NL slate offers up Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Colorado at Florida, San Francisco at the Mets, Washington at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Atlanta, Houston at Milwaukee, San Diego at St. Louis, and the Dodgers at Arizona. Los Angeles sends Clayton Kershaw (8-6, 2.73 ERA) to the mound in that matchup; the lefthander hasn't won since July 18 despite giving up just six runs over his last four outings. The D-Backs will counter with ace Dan Haren (11-7, 2.57 ERA).

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The WNBA has three games on the schedule for Friday, with Connecticut at Washington, Sacramento at Los Angeles, and Chicago at New York. The Sky will be looking to bounce back from a 64-58 loss to Detroit in their last outing; Candice Dupree had a team-high 16 points in that defeat. The Liberty knocked off Los Angeles 65-61 last time out, with Shameka Christon tossing in 11 points.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, Tiger Woods enters the second round of the PGA Championship as the leader - the world's top player shot a 5-under 67 in Thursday's opening round, and he's one stroke up on Padraig Harrington. Hunter Mahan, Vijay Singh, and David Toms are in a group of golfers at 3-under heading into action on Friday. Phil Mickelson struggled with a 2-over 74 on Thursday to sit seven strokes back.

      Six-pack for Friday

Why Rik Aalbert (Bert) Blyleven should be in the Hall of Fame.......

-- He won 287 games for a .534 win percentage; add up all the teams he played for-- they won .517 of games- he outperformed his teams.

      -- 3,701 strikeouts, the 5th-most ever.

-- Played for two world champs: '79 Pirates, '87 Twins.

-- His postseason pitching record-- six starts-- 5-1, 2.47.

-- He allowed 4,632 hits in 4,970 IP, mostly in games with a DH; he started 685 games and finished 242 of those, with 60 shutouts.

-- He didn't just hang on at the end-- at age 39, he went 17-5, 2.73 for the '79 Angels.

Don't hate on him because he played mostly for small market teams; this guy deserves to be enshrined in Cooperstown.

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13......

Our normal Friday baseball list, but we ramble on other subjects instead of giving reasons for our rankings.......

      13) Tigers-- Wouldn't you love to know what Donovan McNabb really thinks about Michael Vick getting $8M from the Eagles??? Me too.

      12) Cubs-- Glad to hear Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen lost 105 pounds since last season, and he did it through diet, not through an operation. Losing weight through diet is the healthier way to do it.

      11) Marlins-- Wake Forest has beaten Florida State in football the last three seasons. Wake coach Grobe is one of the best in the country.

      10) Rays-- Thumbs down on golf as an Olympic sport-- this is pathetic try by Olympic organizers to latch onto the Eldrick Woods money train. Everything he touches turns to gold, and even though Olympics talk about amateur stuff, they like money as much as anyone else.

      9) Giants-- Weird seeing Drew Carey hosting The Price Is Right-- back in the day, I remember when that show first came on the air, with ol' Bob Barker as host. Barker hosted the show until he was about 80-- its just weird to see someone else doing it. Good trivia-- way back when, it was Dennis James who hosted the nighttime Price Is Right.

      8) Rangers-- Home prices in the second quarter of 2009 are down 15.6% from the second quarter of 2008. So a house that sold for $250,000 last June went for about $211,000 this June. Good time to buy.

      7) Rockies-- How happy are the Lakers that Pau Gasol broke his finger playing with the Spanish National Team, but still wants to play in the European Championships in Poland, starting September 7?

      6) Angels-- Imagine Paula Abdul's husband-- she comes home, tells him she quit American Idol even though they offered her $10M a year. Now I don't even know if she's married, but what the hell is she thinking???

      5) Red Sox-- A high school kid in San Diego is skipping his senior year in high school to play pro ball in Israel-- he's getting paid $150,000, but is the move in the kid's best interest longterm? He is eligible for the draft in 2011, so he is skipping one year of high school, one year of college for a payday that isn't all that great. It'll be an interesting case to study.

      4) Cardinals-- Don't mess with Roger Goodell. Courts took it easy on Donte Stallworth, giving him 30 days in jail, but the NFL suspended him for a full season, without pay. Goodell seems like he is trying to do the right thing for the league, not just the league's image.

      3) Phillies-- Damn, I always wanted to go to the Final Four in Dover, but now that the NCAA said that states that have sports betting can't host NCAA championship events, Delaware will never host the Final Four. Oh wait, they were never going to host the Final Four anyway. It'll be great to go to Delaware and wager on some ballgames. Good for them.

      2) Bronx Bombers-- New York Giants sold space on practice jerseys to Timex; problem is, Eli Manning has an endorsement deal with Citizen watches. Compromise is that Eli won't do any interviews with practice jersey on. Why would a company buy space on practice jerseys?????

      1) Dodgers-- Second year in row, USC's starting QB got hurt in August as Aaron Corp is out for two weeks with bum knee. Trojans have depth at QB, with prize freshman Barkley, Arkansas transfer Mustain.

        Friday, August 14

BC LIONS AT TORONTO ARGONAUTS (+3, 46.5)

No matter who starts at quarterback, if the offensive line doesn’t do the job, you won’t win a football game. Cody Pickett will try to ignite the Argos offence but how will he do that if he has no time to find his receivers and throw the ball? And how is he to perform miracles when his head coach, Bart Andrus, seems way over his head when play calling three-down football? Calling a sweep on the weak side on a third and short situation last week in Montreal comes to mind. It’s even worse when the entire team gives yardage by the ton through terrible penalties. The B.C. Lions have had their fair share of problems and a QB controversy of their own. But they are a much better team than the Argonauts at this point and should win this one.

        Pick: B.C. -3

        Saturday, August 15

MONTREAL ALOUETTES AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (+8, 48)

Winnipeg will try to run the ball and with backs like Fred Reid and Yvenson Bernard, they should. The problem is that it is exactly what the Alouettes will be expecting and have prepared for during practice. Will Michael Bishop be able to create chaos in Montreal’s secondary by throwing deep and take advantage of tall WR Adarius Bowman against two cornerbacks that are only 5-foot-9? That might be the key. But Bishop will need his offensive line to contain the Alouettes front seven if he is going to take advantage of that apparent mismatch. The defensive unit will also need to step up to slow down Anthony Calvillo and his impressive arsenal of receivers. The Bombers have the second-worst offensive record in the CFL and are facing the second most potent attack.

        Pick: Montreal -8

        Sunday, August 16

HAMILTON TIGER CATS AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (-5, 52.5)

It’s an interesting showdown in Regina between these surprising squads who lead the CFL in points against after six games. Not exactly what they are used to in Saskatchewan. DeAndra Cobb is a solid running back and he should inflict some damage to the Riders but I doubt that it will be enough. Hamilton this season has played with discipline avoiding giving costly turnovers or taking bad penalties. The Roughriders should make note of that, especially after last week when QB Darian Durant threw two interceptions in a 35-20 loss to B.C. Home advantage should be a big factor in this one.

        Pick: Saskatchewan -5

-Bronson Arroyo, Reds, tossed a two-hitter with three strikeouts in a 7-0 victory over the Nationals. Arroyo allowed only one runner as far as second base to win for the first time since beating Milwaukee on July 17.

-Cliff Lee, Phillies, allowed one run and six hits over eight innings, striking out eight in Philadelphia's 6-1 win over the Cubs. Lee won his third straight start since joining the Phillies, who wrapped up their first sweep at Wrigley Field in 25 years.

-Josh Hamilton, Rangers, went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in Texas' 4-1 victory over Cleveland. Hamilton is batting .522 with six RBIs against Cleveland this season.

-Justin Verlander, Tigers, scattered four hits over eight innings with eight strikeouts to lead Detroit to a 2-0 victory over the Red Sox. It was his 15th game with eight or more strikeouts.

-Joakim Soria, Royals, got the final six outs for his 19th save of the season as Kansas City took two of three games from Minnesota with a 5-4 victory.

-CC Sabathia, Yankees, struck out 10 and allowed one run in eight innings as New York routed Seattle 11-1.

          TRIPLE THE FUN

The Reds' Jonny Gomes homered in his first three at-bats and drove in five runs in a 7-0 victory over the Nationals. Gomes hit two-run homers in the second and fourth innings and added a solo shot in the sixth before striking out in the eighth. It was the second three-homer game in his career, the first coming against Kansas City on July 30, 2005.

          BELOW THE BELTRE

Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre was put on the 15-day disabled list with a bleeding testicle, one day after taking a hard one-hopper off the bat of Chicago's Alexei Ramirez to his groin area. Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said the Gold Glove infielder is out indefinitely, and could need surgery. Beltre does not wear a protective cup because he says it's uncomfortable.

          CALLING ALL UNITS

Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino filed a police report Thursday, a day after getting doused with beer while making a catch at Wrigley Field. John Macchione of Bartlett, Ill., was charged with one count of battery and one count of illegal conduct within a sports facility. Victorino was hit with a cup of beer thrown from the bleachers in the Phillies' 12-5 win over the Cubs. The All-Star outfielder received an apology from Cubs management.

          TWINS TROUBLES

Gil Meche pitched Kansas City to a 5-4 victory over the Twins and their first series win since a trip to Houston on June 23-25. The Royals won two of three from Minnesota, their first win in a series of at least three game since taking two of three in the Metrodome on May 1-3.

          THROWING SOME HEAT

Rangers starter Scott Feldman improved to 8-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 10 road starts this season. ... The Reds' Bronson Arroyo tossed a two-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Washington, his first win since July 17. ... Cliff Lee won his third straight start since joining the Phillies, 6-1 over the Cubs. The AL Cy Young Award winner has won six straight overall.

          BRINGING SOME WOOD

The Cubs' Ryan Theriot reached a career-high 46 RBIs with his single in a 6-1 loss to Philadelphia. He drove in 45 in 2007. ... Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 16 games during a 7-0 loss to Cincinnati. He had a 30-game streak earlier this season. ... Florida has at least 10 hits in a club-record 10 straight games, after pounding Mike Hampton in a 9-2 win over the Astros.

          MINOR MENTIONS

Cleveland traded infielder Andy Cannizaro to the White Sox for cash considerations, and he'll be assigned to Triple-A Charlotte. ... Cubs pitcher Ericdervid Martinez and outfielder Gregorio Robles were suspended 50 games after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. They were both playing in the Dominican Summer League.

          SPEAKING

"That's a horse. That's a brilliant performance. The eighth inning was textbook, No. 1-type pitching. To do what he did in that inning, at that point in the ballgame, there's not many guys who can do that.'' - Detroit manager Jim Leyland after starter Justin Verlander struck out Jason Bay with two 100 mph fastballs in the eighth inning of a 2-0 victory over the Red Sox.

          SEASONS

          Aug. 14

1937 - The Detroit Tigers scored 36 runs (16-1 and 20-7) against the St. Louis Browns in a doubleheader sweep to set a major league record. Pete Fox of the Tigers scored eight of the runs in the doubleheader.

1958 - Vic Power of the Cleveland Indians stole home twice, in the 8th and 10th innings, in a 10-9 win over Detroit. He had only three steals all year.

1961 - The Philadelphia Phillies dropped their 17th straight game, a 9-2 loss to Dick Ellsworth and the Chicago Cubs. It was also the 11th consecutive complete game thrown against the Phillies.

1969 - On an off-day after a three-game sweep by the Astros in Houston, the New York Mets fell to third place, 9 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs.

1971 - St. Louis right-hander Bob Gibson pitched a no-hitter, blanking the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-0. Jose Cruz made a running catch of Milt May's 400-foot drive to center in the seventh inning and third baseman Joe Torre made a leaping stab of Dave Cash's bad-hop grounder in the eighth inning.

1981 - Jeff Burroughs of the Seattle Mariners hit three home runs in a 13-3 rout of the Minnesota Twins in the second game of a doubleheader.

1982 - Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies, in his first at-bat of a 15-11 victory over the Montreal Expos, passed Hank Aaron and moved into first place on the career at-bat list with 12,365.

1987 - Oakland's Mark McGwire set a major league rookie record with his 39th homer of the season to help the A's to a 7-6, 12-inning victory over the California Angels. McGwire gave the A's a 5-3 lead in the sixth when he hit the two-run homer off Don Sutton.

1998 - Baltimore's Chris Hoiles became the ninth major leaguer and first catcher to hit two grand slams in one game against the Cleveland Indians. Hoiles homered in the third inning off Charles Nagy and in the eighth against Ron Villone to lead the Orioles to a 15-3 victory.

2002 - Trevor Hoffman became the first reliever in major league history to have 30 or more saves in eight straight seasons in San Diego's 6-2 win over the New York Mets.

2006 - Matt Diaz went 4-for-5 with a homer, tying an NL record by hitting safely in 10 consecutive at-bats, and Chipper Jones homered in three straight plate appearances to lead Atlanta to a 10-4 victory over Washington.

2007 - Atlanta manager Bobby Cox set a dubious record in the Braves' 5-4 victory over San Francisco. Cox was tossed after the fifth for arguing a called third strike, his 132nd career ejection breaking the mark set by Hall of Famer John McGraw.

2008 - Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Juan Uribe hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning to tie a major league record and the White Sox beat the Royals 9-2. Thome hit a two-out, three-run shot off Joel Peralta. Konerko followed with his 12th homer and Ramirez hit his 11th before Robinson Tejeda came on to pitch. Uribe, homerless in his 107 previous at-bats, greeted him with his fourth of the year.

2008 - Oakland reliever Brad Ziegler started his career by not allowing a run in 39 consecutive shutout innings - including the eighth - to tie a 59-year-old major league record for relievers set by Cleveland's Al Benton in 1949. Tampa Bay's B.J. Upton ended Ziegler's run with an RBI double in the ninth.

Today's birthdays: Clay Buchholz 25; Leo Nunez 26; Juan Pierre 32; Mark Loretta 38.

            This Day in Baseball

On August 14 in Baseball History...

1888 - Tim Keefe winning streak is stopped at nineteen games when Gus Krock and the Chicago White Stockings beat the Giants before a crowd of 10,240 in New York.

1932 - John Quinn, at 49, becomes the oldest pitcher to win a major league game. Quinn earns the decision for Brooklyn in relief against the Giants.

1933 - Jimmie Foxx hits for the cycle and drives in nine runs to break the American League record, as the A's beat the Indians 11-5. A record eight players will hit for the cycle in 1933.

1937 - The Detroit Tigers scored 36 runs against the St. Louis Browns in a doubleheader to set a major league record. Pete Foxof the Tigers scored eight of the runs.

1958 - Vic Power of the Cleveland Indians stole home twice in the same game. He had only three steals all year.

1961 - The Philadelphia Phillies dropped their 17th straight game, a 9-2 loss to Dick Ellsworth and the Chicago Cubs. It was also the 11th consecutive complete game pitched against the Phillies.

1969 - On an off-day after a three-game sweep by the Astros in Houston, the New York Mets fell to third place, 9 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs.

1971 - Before 30,678 Pittsburgh fans, Cardinals ace Bob Gibson, 35, hurls the first no-hitter of his career, an 11-0 shellacking of the Pirates. Gibson walks three and strikes out 10, and paces the offense with three RBI.

1981 - Jeff Burroughs of the Seattle Mariners hit three home runs in a 13-3 rout of the Minnesota Twins.

1982 - Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies, in his first at-bat of a 15-11 victory over the Montreal Expos, passed Hank Aaron and moved into first place on the all-time at-bat list with 12,365.

1987 - Oakland's Mark McGwire slugs his 39th home run of the season in a 12-inning 7-6 win over California, breaking the major league record for rookies shared by Wally Berger and Frank Robinson. McGwire will finish the season with 49 homers, most in the American League.

1988 - Detroit pounds the Red Sox 18-6 at Fenway Park to end Boston's American League record home winning streak at 24 games. Boston was just two wins shy of the major league record held by the 1916 Giants.

1997 - Lights out! The Orioles and Mariners wait out a power outage of nearly two-and-a-half hours in varying degrees of light and darkness before the game is finally postponed. It results in the Mariners having to play back-to-back doubleheaders in different cities.

                Friday, August 14

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles (+135, 10)

The Halos are on a cross-country tour of the American League East and Central divisions, starting Friday in Baltimore. Los Angeles boasts one of the best road records in the majors, going 17-5 in its last 22 tilts away from home, and is an overwhelming 20-9 versus the AL East this season.

The Angels are fresh of a dominating performance against the division’s reigning champs, the Tampa Bay Rays, and own a 21-7 record in their past 28 meetings with the Orioles – including taking five of six games against Baltimore this year. The Angels hit a collective .314 BA and outscored Baltimore 39-25 in those contests.

Los Angeles’ bats led the way versus Tampa Bay, scoring 24 total runs during its three-game sweep. The Halos lineup is hitting a major-league best .289 BA and is averaging just under six runs per game.

“We did a good job this series, and it's carried over from the last 50 to 60 games or so," manager Mike Scioscia told the media following Wednesday’s series finale. "And it needs to continue. So it was a good series, but we need to take it on the road this weekend."

                Pick: Los Angeles -143

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves (-133, 8.5)

The long MLB schedule is taking its toll on Atlanta Braves starter Jair Jurrjens.

The young righty was one of the best-kept secrets in baseball at the start of the year, but has shown signs of wearing down in recent outings.

Jurrjens has allowed eight earned runs in his past two starts (both against the Los Angeles Dodgers), seven of which came in the fifth inning. He failed to pitch more than five innings in each outing and allowed two home runs after keeping the ball in the park in his previous three starts.

"I wasn't throwing my slider for strikes, so I just had two pitches to throw," Jurrjens told the media last week. "They make it really difficult on you. I threw some close pitches and it got my pitch count up."

The 23 year old’s frustrations boiled over in his most recent start, when he was ejected by home plate umpire Eric Cooper after giving the official a piece of his mind while leaving the game.

His last two appearances have played over the total and Atlanta has an over/under record of 7-4 this month heading in Friday’s series opener.

                Pick: Over 8.5

                  Friday, August 14

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Adam Wainwright (St. Louis Cardinals)

Wainwright (13-7, 2.73 ERA) has a streak of nine straight quality starts dating back to June 21. During that streak, he has lasted at least six innings each time out and never allowed more than two earned runs.

The key for the 27-year-old hurler? He’s allowed only one home run during the streak and has a 62:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

His most recent start was rock solid, as he gave up only one run over 6 2-3 innings against the Pirates. He also struck out six and issued no free passes.

                  Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees)

As fall approaches, that can mean only one thing – Andy Pettitte is getting into postseason form.

Pettitte (9-6, 4.14 ERA) had a first half to forget, but has failed to notch a quality start only once since the All-Star break. The left-hander has a 1.87 ERA since the mid-summer classic, leading the team to wins against AL East foes Toronto, Boston and Baltimore.

In his most recent start, a 5-2 win over Boston, Pettitte just five hits over seven innings as he didn’t allow a runner to cross home plate.

"Andy has pitched in so many big games for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told the Associated Press. "He was great.”

                  Slumping

                  Dan Haren (Arizona Diamondbacks)

It appears like the right-hander is human after all.

Haren (11-7, 2.57 ERA) looked like a Cy Young candidate in early July. But it’s been all downhill since then. The right-hander has been tagged for five runs in each of his past two starts and hasn’t had a quality start since July 18. Over the past 23 innings he has allowed 17 runs.

His most recent outing, a 5-2 loss to the Nationals, saw him allow a pair of home runs in a game for the first time since May 23.

                  Bobby Parnell (New York Mets)

Manager Jerry Manuel apparently really has it in for this kid. Parnell (2-4, 3.94 ERA) appeared to finally find a groove in the team’s suspect bullpen, but due to other player’s repeated failure and various injuries, he had a shot to make his first start of the year last week.

That was, until Manuel showed zero faith in him by yanking him as soon as he got into trouble. Parnell lasted just 2 1-3 innings against the Padres, as he yielded two earned runs on four hits and three walks.

The real wager for his start on Friday against the Giants, is: will he last seven innings or give up seven runs before he’s pulled this time?
