    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, August 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees close out their series with Toronto, the Cards take on the Reds, and Pedro Martinez debuts for the Phillies.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.67 ERA) will take the hill for the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon as they complete a home series against the Blue Jays and Ricky Romero (10-5, 3.66 ERA). Righthander Burnett dominated the Red Sox in his last trip to the mound, holding the rival club scoreless on one hit over his 7 2-3 innings of work. Lefthander Romero was beaten by the Orioles in his last start, surrendering four earned runs on five hits over his six innings pitched that night.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: Oakland at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at the Angels, Texas at Cleveland, Detroit at Boston, Kansas City at Minnesota, and the White Sox at Seattle. Mark Buehrle (11-6, 3.89 ERA) will try to snap his three-game losing streak for the ChiSox; the lefthander hasn't won since pitching his perfect game on July 23. The M's counter with righthander Felix Hernandez (12-4, 2.84 ERA), with Seattle a stellar 9-1 in his last 10 outings.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The Phillies will send Pedro Martinez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday as the righthander makes his season debut on the road against the Cubs and Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 6.29 ERA). Martinez had been pitching in the minor leagues in recent weeks; Jamie Moyer was sent to the bullpen to make room for him in the rotation. Righthander Samardzija has appeared in 16 games so far this season for the Cubs, all in relief; he replaces injured Carlos Zambrano.

Rounding out the National League slate for Wednesday: the Mets at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Francisco, Houston at Florida, Washington at Atlanta, San Diego at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at Colorado, and Cincinnati at St. Louis. The Reds will send Homer Bailey (2-3, 7.11 ERA) to the hill in that matchup; the righthander has allowed 10 earned runs over his last 11 1-3 innings. Chris Carpenter (11-3, 2.26 ERA) is set for the Cardinals; the righthander has won his last three outings

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Kevin Youkilis got tossed for charging the mound Tuesday; he was replaced by Mike Lowell, who homered his next two times up.

-- Jamie Moyer has highest ERA of any regular starting pitcher in the major leagues, so he should just go to the bullpen and be quiet.

-- Fernando Tatis batted 3rd for the Mets last night, first time he has batted third in a big league game since 2001 with the Expos.

-- Giants are only team in top seven of NFL over/under win totals that plays in the NFC.

-- 21 of 120 I-A college football teams have new head coaches in '09.

-- Hazeltine National, host of the 91st PGA Championship, will play as a 7,674 yard, par-72 layout. It will be the longest course in major championship history, and will play 319 yards longer than it did for the 2002 PGA Championship.

          This Day in Baseball

On August 12 in Baseball History...

1887 - At the Metropolitans' grounds on Staten Island, Athletic batter Gus Weyhing hits an apparent triple that right fielder Eddie Hogan kicks onto the stage of the play The Fall of Babylon. Since the ground rules at the park call for a double on hits into the theatrical set, the American Association umpire orders Weyhing back to second. After a futile argument, the Athletics leave and forfeit the game.

1921 - Philadelphia's George Smith gave up 12 hits and still pitched a shutout as the Phillies beat the Boston Braves 4-0.

1934 - Making a farewell appearance in Boston, Babe Ruth draws a record 46,766 fans, with an estimated 20,000 turned away, at Fenway Park, the place where he began his career as a pitcher twenty years earlier. Ruth leaves the field to standing cheers in the eighth inning of the second game of the doubleheader.

1936 - The largest crowd ever to watch a baseball game, between 90,000 and 125,000, sees a demonstration game at the Berlin Olympics. The world amateurs beat the U.S. amateurs 6-5.

1948 - The Cleveland Indians beat the St. Louis Browns 26-3 with a 29-hit barrage. The Indians set a major league record as 14 different players had hits.

1954 - Eddie Yost of the Senators draws his 100th walk for the fifth year in a row.

1963 - Stan Musial announces he will retire at the end of the year.

1964 - Mickey Mantle homers from each side of the plate in the same game for the tenth and final time, a major league record, as New York beats Chicago 7-3 at Yankee Stadium.

1966 - Art Shamsky of the Cincinnati Reds hit three home runs in a 14-11, 13-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Crosley Field. Two of the homers came in the 10th and 11th innings. 1970 - Curt Flood loses his $4.1 million antitrust suit against baseball, as Federal Judge Irving Ben Cooper upholds the legality of the sport's reserve clause. Cooper does recommend changes in the reserve system, to be achieved through negotiation between players and owners. In fewer than six years, this recommendation would become a reality.

1974 - Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 and walks only two as the Angels top the Red Sox 4-2.

1977 - For the second straight day, Oakland's Manny Sanguillen foils a no-hit bid. Today's single is off the Orioles' Jim Palmer, who settles for a two-hit 6-0 victory. Yesterday's hit was off Mike Torrez, who finished with a 3-0 two-hitter for the Yankees.

1984 - Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell, Don Drysdale, Pee Wee Reese, and Luis Aparicio are inducted into the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York.

1988 - The Red Sox beat the Tigers 9-4 for their 23rd consecutive win at home, breaking the American League record held by the 1931 A's. Boston has not lost at Fenway Park since June 24.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox (-230, 9)

Detroit manager Jim Leyland sometimes comes off as a crotchety old fart.

And it’s not just because he looks like an unmasked bad guy from Scooby Doo. Leyland is legendary for his tirades. His most recent grumblings came after the Tigers bullpen allowed the Boston Red Sox to steal a 6-5 win Monday.

Relievers Fu-Te Ni and Zach Miner allowed two runs including a home run after starter Edwin Jackson struggled to get out of the blocks in the series opener. This past weekend, Detroit’s bullpen gave up a total of 12 runs in three games against the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers managed to win 2-of-3 contest but nearly blew those victories late in the game.

"Those guys have to do a job," Leyland told the Detroit News. "You can't use Lyon, Seay and Fernando Rodney every night. It just doesn't work like that.”

All three of those weekend tilts played over the oddsmakers’ total as well as Monday’s opener with the Red Sox. The Tigers have an over/under mark of 8-2 in August and a hefty team ERA over 6.00.

                Pick: Over 9

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels (+107, 10.5)

Just like the A-Team, the Los Angeles Angels love it when a plan comes together.

The pieces are falling in place for the Halos, who appear ready for a late-season push which would put them in full stride for the postseason. The first sign of this cohesion is the red-hot bat of designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero.

Guerrero knocked two home runs out of Angel Stadium against the Rays Monday and has hit four dingers in his last five games heading into Tuesday. For August, the free-swinging veteran is batting over .300 and is almost fully recovered from a laundry list of ailments.

“He’s made a career out of hitting pitchers’ pitches and balls off the plate, and he does damage with them,” Rays reliever Russ Springer, who gave up Guerrero’s second home run, told the media. “I threw the ball where I wanted to throw it and he hit the right field foul pole with it.

“I’ve never faced in my career a guy that covers as much of an area that he does … When he’s locked in, he has a big area that he can make contact with.”

Adding to the Angels’ growing momentum is improved production from the bottom of the order, continued power from Kendry Morales and the probable return of Torii Hunter this weekend.

                Pick: Los Angeles +107

                  Tuesday, August 11

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox)

The right-hander has eight outings this season in which he has not allowed an earned run, including his last two and five of his last nine starts.

Beckett has a string of 14 consecutive scoreless innings, giving up 10 hits and four walks while striking out 12 batters. He had strings of 18 2-3 and 16 scoreless innings in June.

Beckett has not lost at Fenway Park this season.

                  Bud Norris (Houston Astros)

While other established pitchers such as A.J. Burnett and Ricky Nolasco are in nice grooves, this rookie right-hander is off to a solid start.

Norris has surrendered just eight hits and struck out 12 batters in 13 innings in his two starts, both of which were wins. He has had a little trouble with control and needed 105 pitches to get through six innings his last time out.

Norris walked 53 hitters in 120 innings at Triple-A Round Rock, where he had a 2.63 ERA. He has lasted six innings in his last 12 starts at both levels.

                  Debuting

                  Jeff Samardzija (Chicago Cubs)

Yeah, we know about the guy Samardzija is facing. But the former Notre Dame football standout is making his first major league start.

A 6-foot-5 righty, Samardzija has made 42 relief appearances over his first two seasons. He was sharper as a rookie last year, beginning this season in the minor leagues.

The Cubs have tried to stretch out Samardzija with three outings of at least three innings, including a four-innings stint in his last appearance August 7. He was scored on in all three of those outings.

                  Trevor Bell (Los Angeles Angels)

The 22-year-old right-hander is making his major league debut, taking the rotation spot of Joe Saunders, who went on the DL with shoulder tightness.

"Trevor's shown the command and stuff that we hope he can do at least, or maybe more, than some guys (on the club) who are options," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times, adding that Bell would get more than one start.

Bell should be ready. He was 4-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 11 starts for Double-A Arkansas and 3-4 with two shutouts and a 3.15 ERA for Triple-A Salt Lake in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He is not a strikeout pitcher, collecting just 89 K's in 140 innings.

                  Slumping

                  Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox)

                  Mr. Perfect?

                  Really?

                  Yes, really.

The left-hander has been awful since his masterpiece against Tampa Bay. In his last three starts, he has been pounded for 17 runs and 28 hits in just 18 1-3 innings, taking three straight losses.

Not a big strikeout pitcher, Buehrle had six in his perfect game. He has had five since.

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs [8:05 PM ET]

Phillies (-$1.15 O/U 10): Three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez makes his Phillies and 2009 debut. The 37-year-old right-hander last pitched in the majors on Sept. 25 of 2008 for the Mets against the Cubs. Martinez went 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA and 16 strikeouts in three minor league rehab appearances spanning 12 1/3 innings. Philadelphia has defeated Chicago in five of its last six meetings. Jimmy Rollins has hit safely in 23 of his last 26 games, smacking six homers and driving in 20 runs during this span. However, the Phillies’ four leading home run hitters – Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez and Jayson Werth – have combined for one home run this month. The Phillies are 3-6 in their last nine games. Their bullpen faces fatigue issues after Tuesday’s extra-inning win with relief pitchers J.C. Romero and Clay Condrey both on the DL.

The Phillies are 36-16 in their last 52 games versus National League Central Division clubs.
The Under is 7-2-1 in the Phillies’ last 10 games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - J.C. Romero (elbow) and Clay Condrey (oblique) are on the DL.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Cubs: The Cubs have dropped five of their last six games. Chicago has won 33 of its last 53 games at Wrigley Field, including eight of its last 11 there. Jeff Samardzija is set to make his first big-league start. The former Notre Dame football standout is 1-1 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 relief appearances for the Cubs spanning 24 1/3 innings. The right-hander pitched 1 2/3 innings against the Phillies on July 21 and took the loss after surrendering a three-run homer to Jayson Werth. Samardzija pitched four innings of relief in his last outing, Friday against the Rockies giving up two runs. Samardzija was 5-3 with a 3.72 ERA in the minors this season with 12 of his 13 outings coming as a starter. Milton Bradley is nine for his last 17 since being moved to second in the batting order.

The Under is 11-4-3 the last 18 times the Cubs have hosted the Phillies.

Key Injuries - Aramis Ramirez is not expected to play having missed the last three games with shoulder soreness.

Chicago White Sox at Seattle Mariners [10:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Since tossing the 18th perfect game in Major League history, White Sox lefty Mark Buehrle has struggled. Buehrle (11-6, 3.89 ERA) is 0-3 with an 8.35 ERA since he made history on July 23. Buehrle wasn’t sharp in his last start on Friday, yielding six runs on 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings against the Indians. Buehrle allowed at least one runner to reach base in every inning, but was helped by six double-play grounders, the most since 1972. Buehrle has pitched better at home, where he’s 7-3 with a 3.33 ERA, than on the road where his record is 4-3 with a 4.81 ERA. Lifetime against the Mariners, Buehrle is 7-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 14 appearances. Chicago is 2-8 in its last 10 games versus a right-handed starter. The White Sox have lost eight of their last 11 at Safeco Field.

The Under has cashed 7 of the past nine times the White Sox have been on the road against a team with a winning home mark.

                              Key Injuries - None

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mariners (-$1.35, O/U 7.5 under -$1.15): Felix Hernandez hasn’t been as sharp at home as he has been on the road. The right-hander is 4-3 with a 4.05 ERA at Safeco Field compared to 8-1 with a 1.96 ERA away from home. Overall, Hernandez is 12-4 with a 2.84 ERA. Hernandez, though, wasn’t sharp in his last game Friday at home against Tampa Bay. The Mariners managed to win, but Hernandez didn’t get the decision after giving up three earned runs, five hits and six walks in six innings. Despite the abbreviated start, Hernandez still threw 113 pitches. In his last three outings, Hernandez has yielded 12 earned runs in 18 2/3 innings giving up 22 hits and 11 walks, while allowing four homers. Hernandez was dominant in his lone start against the White Sox this season, holding them scoreless for eight innings while giving up four hits and striking out nine.

Seattle is 2-7 in its last nine versus a left-handed starter.
The Over has cashed in 7 of the Mariners’ last eight games.

Key Injuries - Erik Bedard (shoulder) is on the DL.
