    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, August 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees take on the Blue Jays, the Red Sox look to tame the Tigers, and the Dodgers clash with the division-rival Giants.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

The Yankees return to action on Tuesday night as they open a home series against the Blue Jays. Joba Chamberlain (8-2, 3.73 ERA) will get the ball for New York in that contest; the righthander has won four straight starts, and he beat the Red Sox in his last trip to the mound (four runs in five innings). The Blue Jays will counter with Scott Richmond (6-6, 3.97 ERA), who has lost two starts in a row. The righthander gave up six runs in three innings against the A's in his last outing.

Also on the American League schedule for Tuesday: Oakland at Baltimore, Texas at Cleveland, Kansas City at Minnesota, Tampa Bay at the Angels, the White Sox at Seattle, and Detroit at Boston. Rick Porcello (10-7, 4.30 ERA) will make that start for the Tigers; the righthander beat the Orioles last time out, and his team is 7-3 in his last 10 starts. Junichi Tazawa (0-1, 10.80 ERA) is slated to start for Boston; the righthander has made just one bullpen appearance this year.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

J.A. Happ (8-2, 2.74 ERA) will clash with Rich Harden (7-7, 4.41 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Phillies begin a set in Chicago against the Cubs. Lefthander Happ dazzled the Rockies in his last trip to the mound, tossing nine shutout innings and giving up just four hits (while fanning 10). Righthander Harden took a hard-luck loss against the Reds in his most recent trip to the mound, as he surrendered three runs (two earned) over his six innings of work.

Elsewhere around the National League on Tuesday it'll be Houston at Florida, Washington at Atlanta, San Diego at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at Colorado, the Mets at Arizona, and the Dodgers at San Francisco. Randy Wolf (5-6, 3.55 ERA) is on tap for Los Angeles in that contest; the lefthander gave up four runs in seven innings versus the Braves last time out. Joe Martinez (2-0, 5.87 ERA) will try to remain unbeaten in a start for the Giants.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA has three games on tap for Tuesday, with Detroit at Washington, New York at Los Angeles, and Sacramento at San Antonio. The Monarchs remain the coldest team in the league, having lost two straight games to sit at 5-17 straight-up and 6-15-1 against-the-spread. The Silver Stars are a middling 10-11 both SU and ATS on season; San Antonio beat Minnesota 89-87 last time out, with Becky Hammon pouring in a team-high 22 points in the victory.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Aaron Boone had open heart surgery May 27; he is doing his rehab assignment now, hopes to re-join the Houston Astros September 1.

-- Rescue crews used an aerial ladder truck to remove 32 people stuck on a roller coaster at Great America Theme Park in Santa Clara, CA.

-- Eldrick Woods won 30 of the last 70 tournaments he played in.

-- Last year, Mark Reynolds was first major leaguer since 1965 to lead the big leagues in both strikeouts and errors.

-- Phillies moved Jamie Moyer to bullpen, will start Pedro Martinez on Wednesday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

-- Want to know why the ballpark in Arizona has a roof? It was 105 in the shade in Phoenix Monday afternoon.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a summer night........

      13) Its fun to watch NFL exhibition games, but don't get carried away with their meaning; the last two summers, the Rams went 4-4, then went a putrid 5-27 in the regular season. Everything is relative.

      12) I'm confused why Tampa Bay Bucs fired their coach and GM and basically started over; they've won their division three of the last seven years, and won a Super Bowl. Why such drastic changes for a team that has been so successful? All four NFC South teams have won division in the last five years, so three titles in seven years is pretty good.

      11) Giants-Cowboys-Eagles took turns winning the NFC East the last three seasons; Redskins haven't won the division since 1999.

      10) Since 1991, 61 NFL teams have had a turnover ratio of -12 or worse; of those 61 teams, 49 had better records the next season. Broncos, 49ers are in that boat this season.

      9) How about Sage Rosenfels? He signs with Vikings as a free agent, and has to sit and watch the Brett Favre fiasco play out; after Favre backs out of playing, one of Minnesota's front office people starts pumping up third-stringer John David Booty's potential. Makes a guy wonder why the hell he decided to play there.

      8) Hard to believe over the last four years, Miami/Florida State have a combined 21-27 record in conference games.

      7) People vote USC in the top 5 out of habit; Trojans have a new QB, two new coordinators and eight new starters on defense. No way is USC one of the five best college football teams right now.

      6) Cal Bears coach Jeff Tedford is 59-30 in Berkeley; Bears were 4-18 in the two years before Tedford got to Cal, so he's an underrated coach.

      5) Boise State is 98-17 this decade, with three different head coaches.

      4) Chase Adams, a point guard at Centenary who was the defensive player of the year last season in the Summit League, is transferring to Pitt for his senior season and will be eligible immediately. Adams doesn't have to sit out a season because Centenary is dropping from Division I to Division III. Panthers are very thin at PG, so Adams will help.

      3) 77 Canadian kids played Division I college basketball last season.

      2) Quick memo to NFL owners/players: if there is no NFL in 2011, the people who support you will find other things to do, and maybe they'll like those things better. Find a way to divide the pie-- its big enough. .

      1) Atlanta Falcons went 11-5 last year; in their 43 years of existence, the Falcons have never had back-to-back winning seasons. Never.

        SCOREBOARD

        Tuesday, August 11

Philadelphia at Chicago Cubs, (8:05 p.m. EDT). Rookie sensation J.A. Happ (8-2) and the Phillies open a series against the NL rival Cubs and Rich Harden (7-7).

        STARS

        Monday

-Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies, hit for the cycle and had a career-high seven RBIs to help Colorado beat the Chicago Cubs 11-5.

-Vladimir Guerrero, Angels, homered twice, including the 400th of his career to put Los Angeles ahead in the seventh inning of an 8-7 victory over Tampa Bay.

-Kyle Lohse, Cardinals, won for the first time since injuring his forearm more than 2 1/2 months ago, working six effective innings for St. Louis in a 4-1 win over Cincinnati.

-Nick Green, Red Sox, hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and one of Boston's three homers as the Red Sox beat Detroit 6-5 to end a six-game losing streak.

-Matt Kemp, Dodgers, hit a three-run double to back a strong effort from Hiroki Kuroda and help slumping Los Angeles win the opener of the key three-game series with San Francisco 4-2.

        CYCLING

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki became the sixth player in the majors to hit for the cycle this season. He had five hits and drove in a career high seven runs in an 11-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. It was the eighth time in Coors Field history a player has hit for the cycle. Fred Lewis of San Francisco was the last one to do it, on May 13, 2007. The last Colorado player to hit for the cycle was Mike Lansing, who did it on June 18, 2000.

        ROAD TO RECOVERY

Less than five months after open-heart surgery, Aaron Boone is back playing baseball, appearing in a minor league game in Texas. Boone batted second Monday night for the Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. He swung at the first pitch and popped up to the first baseman in foul territory. Boone played third base against Midland and was hitless in two at-bats before leaving the game.

        WE'll TAKE HIM

Alex Rios showed up at Yankee Stadium and saw his name in the starting lineup Monday night. He left the ballpark a few hours later, on his way to join the White Sox and a pennant race. The two-time All-Star was claimed off waivers by Chicago and learned the news about 30 minutes before the first pitch between New York and Toronto. The White Sox will be responsible for the remainder on the seven-year, $69,835,000 contract he signed in 2008.

        NO PROBLEM

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen doesn't expect to be punished by Major League Baseball for saying his team will retaliate if any more of his batters get hit by pitches. Guillen said before his team's game against the Mariners he hasn't heard from league officials, nor does he expect to. Guillen went off on Sunday after three of his players were hit by Indians pitchers Saturday.

        MILESTONE

Vladimir Guerrero's second home run of the Angels' 8-7 win over the Rays was the 400th of his career. He also extended his hitting streak to a season-high 12 games a week after coming off the disabled list for the second time this season. The slugger is one of seven active major leaguers with at least 400 homers and 2,000 hits.

        BRING ON BALTIMORE

The Athletics are 4-0 against Baltimore this season, and their nine-game run against the Orioles is the longest in Oakland history. The A's are 64-27 (.703) versus Baltimore since the start of the 1999 season - the best winning percentage by any AL team against the Orioles in that span.

        SIDELINED

All-Star Dodgers pitcher Chad Billingsley will miss his scheduled start against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday with a strained left hamstring. ... Chicago Cubs starter Tom Gorzelanny left Monday night's game against the Colorado Rockies with a right foot contusion after getting hit by a hard grounder in the second inning. ... Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto injured his left hip running out a grounder in the top of the third inning Monday night and was removed from the game.

        STATS

Robinson Cano and Jerry Hairston hit back-to-back homers in the Yankees' 5-4 loss to Toronto, the 12th set of consecutive homers for New York this season. ... Seattle's Kenji Johjima hit his first home run since May 25, a tie-breaking two-run shot in the Mariners' 6-4 win over the White Sox.

        G'DAY MATE

Trent Oeltjen had no idea playing in the big leagues would be this much fun. The outfielder from Down Under hit his third home run in four major league games, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks send the New York Mets to their ninth loss in 12 games, 7-4 on Monday night.

        SPEAKING

"Our biggest thing was - we're back home, just play the rest of the season as hard as we can and whatever happens happens. But were going to remain positive. There's a lot of games left.'' - Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia said after the Red Sox returned home to beat Detroit 6-5 after being swept four straight in New York.

          This Day in Baseball

On August 11 in Baseball History...

1907 - In the second game of a doubleheader, shortened to seven innings by prior agreement, St. Louis Cardinal hurler Ed Karger pitches a perfect game, 4-0, against Boston.

1926 - Tris Speaker of Cleveland hit his 700th career double but the Indians lost to the Chicago White Sox, 7-2. The double came in the third inning off Jim Joe Edwards.

1928 - Carl Hubbell's first major league victory is a 4-0 shutout of the Phillies. He'll be 10-6 down the stretch and will pitch 16 years with the Giants.

1929 - At League Park, Babe Ruth hits home run number 500 off Willis Hudlin of Cleveland.

1950 - Hitting just .279, Yankee great Joe DiMaggio is benched for the first time in his career. He is currently languishing in a 4-for-38 slump.

1951 - Robin Roberts of the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Giants, 4-0, dropping the Giants 13 1/2 games behind the first-place Brooklyn Dodgers.

1961 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves scattered six hits to beat the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, for his 300th career victory.

1962 - The Dodgers protest the wetting down of the field at Candlestick, a tactic they claim is to stop Maury Wills. The Giants win 5-4, but the watering ploy earns Giants manager Alvin Dark the sobriquet The Swamp Fox.

1968 - Satchel Paige, 62 years or so old, and needing 158 days on a major league payroll to qualify for a pension, is signed by the Braves. He will not pitch a regular-season game for Atlanta and will become a coach on September 30.

1969 - Don Drysdale retires because of damage to his right shoulder. Drysdale is the last Los Angeles player left from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Bob Aspromonte, who will retire in 1971, is the last active former Brooklyn Dodger.

1970 - Jim Bunning notches his 100th NL victory, a 6-5 Phillies win over the Astros. Bunning is the first pitcher since Cy Young to win 100 games in each league.

1982 - Terry Felton (0-11) is the losing pitcher in Minnesota's 6-3 loss to the Angels, dropping his career record to 0-14, the worst individual start in major league history. Felton will never win a major league game, finishing his career with an 0-16 record.

1986 - Cincinnati player-manager Pete Rose singled four times and doubled to set a National League record with the 10th five-hit game of his career. The 45-year-old Rose drove in three runs in a 13-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants, to move one ahead of Max Carey for the record.

1987 - Mark McGwire of the Athletics broke Al Rosen's American League rookie record by hitting his 38th home run in Oakland's 8-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

1991 - Wilson Alvarez hurls a no-hitter in his first big league start as the White Sox stop Baltimore 7-0.

1998 - Mark McGwire homers off Bobby Jones in an 8-3 Mets win. The home run tops Hack Wilson's 1930 National League record of 46 home runs hit before September 1. In McGwire's 162 games with the Cardinals since a trade with Oakland on July 31, 1997, McGwire has a .275 batting average with 71 home runs and 146 runs batted in with 165 walks.

              Tuesday, August 11

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels (+118, 9.5)

The Angels’ bats finally cooled off a bit. Los Angeles played over the total in 13 straight games from July 21 to Aug. 2, but the club struggled to touch home in its series against the White Sox and Rangers.

Mike Sciosica’s squad registered just three hits during Sunday’s 7-0 shutout loss to Texas.

Over bettors should expect another pay out on Tuesday, though. Vladimir Guerrero is starting to find his home run swing and shortstop Erik Aybar has been a revelation at the top of the batting order.

Expect the Angels to get to Tampa Bay starter David Price early and continue to hit the Rays bullpen hard.

              Pick: Over

Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians (-116, 9.5)

The Rangers continue to surprise in the AL West. Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that the Rangers would be 14.5 games above .500 and 3.5 games back of the division-leading Angels.

Texas has been baseball’s best bet this season and it’s crystal clear that pitching has been the difference. The Rangers owned the worst team ERA (5.36) in 2008. But in 2009 the club owns a respectable 4.18 ERA, good for ninth best in the majors.

As a result, no team in baseball cashes the under as often as Texas.

Look for the Rangers to limit the light-hitting Indians on Tuesday.

              Pick: Under

                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There aren’t really any pitchers scheduled to start on Tuesday that are setting the world on fire. Because of that, we’re going to focus on hurlers making their big league debut or returning from injury.

                Returning

Roy Oswalt (6-4, 3.61 ERA), Houston Astros

The veteran righty makes his first start since leaving a game earlier on July 28 because of a strain in his lower back. Oswalt said he had no pain in his back after throwing a 40-pitch session on Sunday.

“The biggest thing is just command right now,” he told the Houston Chronicle. “In the bullpen, it’s OK, but you can tell when you get in the game if your command is going to be there.”

After a rough start to the campaign, Oswalt has lowered his ERA to a nifty 3.61. The Astros have won in each of the Mississippi native’s last six appearances.

                Debuting

Junichi Tazawa (0-1, 10.80), Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox rookie actually made his big league debut in relief during Friday’s loss to the Yankees. He gave up four hits (including a walk-off home run to Alex Rodriguez) and two earned runs over 1 1-2 innings.

Since Tim Wakefield and Daisuke Matsuzaka are both still on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona was left with few options to fill John Smoltz’s spot in the rotation.

Tazawa will be pitching on three days’ rest, but he only threw 35 pitches in Friday’s outing.

“If he’d have thrown more [pitches], we wouldn’t have done this,” Francona told the Boston Globe about Tazawa’s Friday appearance.

                Slumping

Ervin Santana (4-6, 7.20), Los Angeles Angels

At least you know what you’re getting with this flame-throwing righty. It’s almost a given that he’s going to pitch six innings and surrender five to six runs in the process.

Santana strikes out a good number of batters (58 in 70 innings pitched) but he struggles with his location. He walked five in his last start and has been taken out of the park eight times in his last six starts.

The Halo offense has been good enough to cover for Santana’s shortcomings. Los Angeles has won in four of his last five starts with the total cashing in five straight as well.

Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves [7:10 PM ET]

Nationals: The Nationals were idle on Monday, which could hurt their momentum. They have won eight in a row, their longest winning streak since 2005. The Nationals are averaging 7.1 runs during their winning streak and their much-maligned bullpen has a 2.31 ERA during this span. Ryan Zimmerman is batting .479 during a 13-game hitting streak with seven homers and 15 RBIs, while Cristian Guzman is riding a 15-game hitting streak and Elijah Dukes has driven in 10 runs during the last three games. However, the Nationals are 14-47 (23 percent) in their last 61 away contests. John Lannan (8-8, 3.39 ERA) is 6-3 with a 2.80 ERA since the beginning of June. He has 15 quality starts this season. The under has cashed in 11 of Lannan’s last 15 starts overall. He has held Atlanta to three runs in 15 innings this season.

The Nationals are 5-16 in Lannan’s last 21 road starts.
The Over has cashed in 13 of Washington’s past 16 games.

Key Injuries - Austin Kearns (thumb) is on the DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Braves (-$2.00 O/U 8.5 under -$1.20): Atlanta is playing well, too, and was idle on Monday. The Braves have won 24 of 38 games since June 28 and just concluded a 5-2 West Coast trip, closing with three straight victories against the Dodgers. Atlanta is 11-4 in their past 15 games at Turner Field. Rookie Tommy Hanson (6-2, 3.22 ERA) hasn’t been as sharp during his past five starts going 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA as he was during his previous five outings when he allowed three earned runs in 29 innings. The right-handed entered the season ranked as the fourth-best prospect in baseball according to Baseball America. He faced the Nationals once, getting a no-decision on July 4 when the Braves lost 5-3. The under has cashed in seven of Hanson’s last 10 starts. The Braves are 38-17 in their last 55 meetings against the Nationals in Atlanta.

The Under has cashed 5 of the last six times between these two clubs.

Key Injuries - Chipper Jones (oblique) and Nate McLouth (hamstring) are both questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox [7:10 PM ET]

Tigers: The Tigers have had their problems on the road lately, dropping 10 of their last 12 away contests. They are 7-20 in their past 27 games at Fenway Park, including dropping five of their last six there. Rick Porcello (10-7, 4.30 ERA) is slated to make his first start at Fenway. The rookie right-hander faced Boston once before, giving up three runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings at Comerica Park on June 2. Porcello allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings during his last start, which came last Thursday against Baltimore. Porcello didn’t allow a hit for the first four innings before giving up four hits in a 7-3 victory. Porcello is 5-4 with a 3.72 road ERA compared to 5-3 with a 4.92 ERA at home. The Tigers are 7-2-1 to the under during their past 10 games at Fenway Park.

The Under is 13-4-1 in Detroit’s last 18 games versus a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - Joel Zumaya (shoulder) is on the DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Red Sox (-$1.35, O/U 10): Boston ended its six-game losing streak on Monday beating the Tigers. The Red Sox are just 9-14 since the All-Star break and have been outscored 40-20 in their past seven games. David Ortiz is in a two-for-29 slump. The Red Sox have defeated the Tigers in eight of the last nine meetings, including sweeping a three-game road series from them from June 2-4. Junichi Tazawa (0-1, 10.80 ERA) is set to make his first big league start. The 23-year-old right-hander made his big league debut in relief on Friday against the Yankees throwing 35 pitches giving up a two-run homer to Alex Rodriguez that gave New York the victory. Tazawa put up dazzling numbers in the Industrial League in Japan, but had never pitched in pro baseball before this season. He was 9-7 with a 2.55 ERA in 20 minor league starts this year.

The Red Sox are 41-15 in their last 56 games versus American League Central Division teams.

Key Injuries - Jed Lowrie (wrist) and Tim Wakefield (back) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

New York Liberty at Los Angeles Sparks (-4.5, 136.5)

If the Sparks are going to make the playoffs, their push has to start now.

Los Angeles (7-11) is fifth in the Western Conference but even in the loss column with third-place Minnesota and fourth-place San Antonio. The top four teams make the playoffs.

Noelle Quinn understands the urgency. Quinn has had season highs in her last two games, scoring 13 points in a loss to San Antonio and 23 in an overtime win over Seattle, the first two games of a five-game homestand.

Averaging just 7.5 points per game, Quinn is picking up the slack with Lisa Leslie and Betty Lennox out with injuries and Candace Parker continuing to play her way into shape.

The game against the Liberty starts a stretch of three in a row against last-place teams for the Sparks, who are 4-2 straight up and against the spread at home.

The Liberty (7-14) changed coaches last week, replacing Pat Coyle with Anne Donovan prior to a five-game road trip. New York is 1-3 on the trip (2-2 ATS) and has lost the finale of its previous two trips this season.

                            Pick: Los Angeles

Sacramento Monarchs at San Antonio Silver Stars (-7, 152)

In Sacramento's last six games, the total has cleared the over five times by an average of better than 19 points. The only exception was a 59-56 loss to Los Angeles on Aug. 1.

In San Antonio's last eight games, the total has cleared the over seven times by an average of better than 17 points. The only exception was a 63-59 loss at Los Angeles on Aug. 4.

Those averages are certainly helped by Sacramento's 101-93 home overtime win over San Antonio on July 30, when the total line was 144.5 - and the teams surpassed it late in the third quarter.

In fact, these teams have exceeded the total in five of their last six meetings.

                            Pick: Over

                              Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for August 11, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

Parting is such sweet sorrow. The Red Sox got out of the Bronx and promptly broke their 6 game losing streak beating Detroit. Without having Boston to beat up on, the Yankees had their 7 game winning streak snapped by Toronto.
When Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hit for the cycle last night (single, double, triple and home run in the same game) he became just the second player in Major League history to have hit for the cycle and turned an unassisted triple play in his career.
That'll teach him. The PGA will fine Tiger Woods for critical comments he made after Sunday's win in Akron. His twosome was placed "on the clock" for slow play, and Tiger wasn't happy about it. Just wondering how much of a fine makes an impact on Tiger's wallet?

                              2. Upon Further Review

Thank you to subscriber Clarkson F. who wrote that the John Sterling call of the "A-bomb from A-Rod" that ended the marathon game Friday night wasn't so cool after all. He points out that the homer was hit off a Japanese relief pitcher. And the real A-bomb was dropped on Japan in the month of August.
God I miss Mel Allen. "Going, going, gone," even though a catch phrase, seemed so much more relevant.

                              3. Not My Fault

Did you hear that Little League baseball had to fork over $125-thousand to a lady who sued them? She claimed her precious little kid, who tore up his knee sliding into second base, wasn't given the proper training. Reminds me of the guy who jumped out of a hotel window on vacation and missed the swimming pool. They sued, claiming the pool was too far away from the building.

                              4. What a Hoser

You can categorize athletes by sport. Hockey players, who can be animals on the ice, are the most genteel off. All they wanna do is skate around and then have a couple of brews. That's what makes the Patrick Kane story so puzzling. The Chicago Blackhawks star is charged with beating up a Buffalo cabbie because he didn't have 20-cents change. Maybe too many brews, eh?

                              5. Paging Dr. Doolittle

I'm told there's a casting call for a new documentary. They're looking for animal mind readers or animal psychics. I'm guessing tons of crackpots will apply. The "legitimate" ones are too busy cleaning up at the track.

Happy Birthday: The Melkman, Yankees centerfielder Melky Cabrera. 25.
Bonus Birthday: Terry Gene Bollea (Hulk Hogan). 56.

Today in Sports: Ya' mean they can do stuff like that? The Giants saturate the Candlestick Park infield with water to slow down base-stealer Maury Wills. The Dodgers protest. 1962.

Bonus Event: Rolling Stone Magazine calls "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band" the best album made during the last 20 years. 1987.

And a special salute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who passed away today. She founded the Special Olympics which represents all that's right in the world of sports.
