    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, August 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox and Yankees continue their set in New York, the Cardinals meet the Pirates, and the Braves take on the Dodgers.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Josh Beckett (13-4, 3.27 ERA) will be matched up against A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.89 ERA) on Friday night as the Red Sox and Yankees continue their series at Yankee Stadium. Righthander Beckett has managed to pick up the win in seven of his past 10 trips to the mound, with Boston 8-2 in those contests. Righthander Burnett has wins in five of his past seven starts, but he was pounded for seven earned runs on 10 hits over 4 2-3 innings in his last outing against the White Sox.

Elsewhere around the American League on Friday it'll be Minnesota at Detroit, Baltimore at Toronto, Oakland at Kansas City, Texas at the Angels, Tampa Bay at Seattle, and Cleveland at the White Sox. The Tribe will turn to lefthander Jeremy Sowers (3-7, 4.97 ERA); Cleveland is 3-7 in his last 10 outings. Mark Buehrle (11-5, 3.79 ERA) gets the ball for the ChiSox; the lefthander has lost his last two outings since his perfect game, allowing 12 runs over his 10 2-3 innings.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The Cardinals will go with Chris Carpenter (10-3, 2.10 ERA) on Friday night when they play on the road against the Pirates and Paul Maholm (6-6, 4.75 ERA). Righthander Carpenter has been dominant over his past two outings, allowing just two earned runs over 16 innings in wins over the Astros and Dodgers. Lefthander Maholm hasn't had the same level of success over his past two starts, losing to both the Nats and the Giants (eight runs over 12 1-3 innings).

Making up the rest of the NL schedule for Friday: Florida at Philadelphia, Arizona at Washington, Milwaukee at Houston, the Cubs at Colorado, the Mets at San Diego, Cincinnati at San Francisco, and Atlanta at the Dodgers. Jair Jurrjens (9-8, 2.85 ERA) will start for the Braves; the righthander fell to the Dodgers last time out, allowing four earned runs in five innings. Righthander Chad Billingsley (11-6, 3.82 ERA) will gun for a second consecutive victory over Jurrjens and his Braves.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League kicks off Week 6 of its season on Friday night with Toronto at Montreal and Saskatchewan at British Columbia. The Argonauts sit at the bottom of the East with a 2-3 straight-up (2-3 against-the-spread) mark through the first five weeks of the season, and they're big 13.5-point road 'dogs against the Alouettes (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS). The Lions are 1.5-point home favorites in the late game; B.C. is 1-4 SU and ATS, and Saskatchewan is 3-2 SU and ATS.

Finally, there's a trio of games on the WNBA schedule for Friday, with Detroit at Washington, Connecticut at Minnesota, and New York at Sacramento. The Liberty are the coldest team in the league, as they're riding a five-game losing streak into Friday's matchup on the west coast; New York is 6-13 SU and 6-12-1 ATS on the season. The 5-16 Monarchs have the fewest wins in the entire league, and at 6-14-1 ATS they've also had problems paying off for bettors so far.

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13......

      13) Mariners-- Four games over .500 despite being outscored by almost fifty runs this season. Adding Snell, French will offset Washburn's trade and might even help in long run. They're having a very positive season.

      12) Tigers-- Washburn had been on fire in Seattle, but lost his debut in Detroit. 34-17 at home, 23-33 on the road, lead AL Central by couple of games over the White Sox, who figure to get a boost from Jake Peavy.

      11) Rockies-- Contending despite not getting much for Holliday-- if they had hung on to him this year, couldn't they have gotten more than Street Gonzalez and Greg Smith this summer? They've done an excellent job in gathering a starting rotation that can pitch in Coors Field.

      10) Cubs-- Gorzelanny was 14-10 for the Pirates two years ago; how in the name of Danny Murtaugh do Bucs trade him to division rival? Hart had been decent as a starter for Cubs. Interesting to see if it works out.

      9) Rangers-- Had chance to grab Wild Card lead this week, but lost three of four in Oakland. Have to get Kinsler back healthy. Young fireballing reliever Feliz throws 100, but Kennedy took him deep Wednesday.

      8) Rays-- Their bullpen is solid, they win a lot at home, but they're not good enough on road to make the playoffs, unless Boston's pitching just implodes down stretch. They're within 1.5 games of Wild Card now.

      7) Red Sox-- Victor Martinez gives them tremendous flexibility in their lineup, but their pitching is hurting, with Matsuzaka/Wakefield on DL. Smoltz experiment has been a failure; he should have stayed in NL.

      6) Cardinals-- Addition of Holliday gives Pujols lineup protection, but is their pitching good enough to hold off Cubs in NL Central?

      5) Giants-- Adding Garko/Sanchez gives their offense needed boost, and they still have the best starting pitching. They'll probably play Phillies in first round of NL playoffs, very tough for the World Champs.

      4) Angels-- Am concerned with their bullpen; how could they possibly get through the trading deadline without adding an arm to bolster a shaky pen? They need to add someone who will get thru waivers this month.

      3) Bronx-- Very imposing lineup, especially in their $1.5B Little League park, where everything in the air to right field results in "SEE YA!!!!!!"

      2) Phillies-- World Champs have already gotten two terrific starts out of Cliff Lee; they're seven games up in division. I hope Ibanez gets support in the MVP balloting; he deserves it.

      1) Dodgers-- Still six games up in NL West; will be interesting to watch how they distribute ABs with their four outfielders.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 6 picks
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Friday, August 7

Toronto Argonauts at Montreal Alouettes (-14, 51.5)

        Matchup trends and stats

The Alouettes (4-1) offense was slowed down last week in Edmonton leading to the club’s first loss of the campaign. Some were wondering if Montreal would lose a game after the way it came out on fire. After four consecutive weeks of generating 400-plus yards, the Als were kept to only 331 last week.

Defense is the Argos’ (2-3) saving grace this summer. Toronto’s D will need to cause a few turnovers to try and keep this one close. The turnover margin was the difference in the Argos’ loss the Blue Bombers last week.

        Pick: Alouettes

        Saskatchewan Roughriders at B.C. Lions (-1, 58.5)

        Matchup trends and stats

Everyone knew coming into the season the Lions (1-4) would be behind the eight ball because of a series of injuries. But nobody expected Wally Buono’s team to find so many ways to beat itself. The Lions have been guilty of poor discipline, careless turnovers, sloppy run defense and a lack of imagination in the opponents’ red zone.

Is this team as bad as its 1-4 record suggests? I don’t think so.

But the Roughriders (3-2) did win in their last 10 trips to Vancouver and, strangely, have been more successful on the road so far this season. It should be a close one but this time the home team should prevail.

        Pick: Lions

        Saturday, August 8

        Edmonton Eskimos at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1, 52)

        Matchup trends and stats

Both stop units participating in this game are above average. Ricky Ray has been dominant in his last two games for the Eskimos (3-2) and his offensive line, after an atrocious start, is finally giving him some time.

The Tiger-Cats (3-2) hope RB DeAndra Cobb, who ran for 167 yards against B.C. last week, can be as successful against the Eskimos, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if a Ti-Cat fan. Edmonton’s defense has stepped up in the last two games and proved capable of stopping the run.

        Pick: Eskimos

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (-14.5, 50.5)

        Matchup and trends

Michael Bishop brings more power to Winnipeg’s (2-3) offence and the Bomber defence, led by Siddeeq Shabazz, is in good shape. But the Bombers are still inconsistent putting points up on the board.

Calgary QB Henry Burris has helped the Stampeders (2-3) score the league’s second-highest season point total. The fact that the Bombers have lost their last eight games at Calgary can’t be reassuring to Winnipeg backers.

        Pick: Stampeders

        Last week: 1-3

        Season: 9-11

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-119, 9.5)

A quick glance at the stats shows the Twins are a terrible road team, who are entering the series against the Tigers on a two-game losing streak. But look even closer.

Minnesota has owned Detroit this year, going 6-2 against the Tigers. Only two of the games in the season series were played in the Motor City so far, which the teams split, but the Twins have left little doubt who was the better team earlier in the year.

The Twins are averaging 6.5 runs per game against the Tigers, with their average margin of victory coming by three runs. Detroit enters the series having taken three of four from the lowly Orioles, but dropped its previous two series to the Indians and Rangers.

"That's a pesky team,” Tigers pitcher Edwin Jackson said of the Twins to the Associated Press. “That's a team that when you go out, you know you're going to have to battle against them.”

              Pick: Twins +111

Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers (-130, 7.5)

The Dodgers are one of the best home teams in baseball, but haven’t been playing like it, losing four of their past six at home and six of 10 overall.

Bad time to play the Braves. Atlanta has won six of its past 10 road games and two straight overall. On the road, the Braves are sixth in team ERA (4.05) and have amassed 378 strikeouts against 180 walks. The team also hits better on the road then at home. Atlanta is hitting .266 overall, but rakes at a .271 clip in an opponent’s yard.

The Dodgers offense hasn’t had much to brag about lately. A 17-run outburst against the Brewers masks the fact the team has scored five or fewer runs in eight of its past 10 games.

              Pick: Braves +122

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants)

When the reigning NL Cy Young winner takes the mound on Friday, it will have been 16 days since a team scored an earned run against him.

Lincecum (12-3, 2.18 ERA) allowed a pair of unearned runs in a 4-2 win over the Pirates on July 27. He allowed just four hits and struck out 15 (yes, 15) over nine innings. In his most recent start, a 2-0 win over the Phillies, he gave up seven hits but allowed no one to cross home plate in eight innings of work.

And you especially don’t want to face him at home. Over the past 55 2-3 innings at AT&T Park, Lincecum has allowed a meager six earned runs.

“Tim did a marvelous job yet again,” Giants closer Brian Wilson told reporters. “Whatever he seems to do doesn't baffle us - he never ceases to amaze.”

                Ricky Nolasco (Florida Marlins)

The Marlins couldn’t wait to get out of Washington after falling apart in their series against the Nationals. But for Nolasco, it doesn’t really matter who he faces lately.

Nolasco (7-7, 5.00 ERA) has churned out three straight quality starts, allowing just three earned runs over the past 20 1-3 innings. In his most recent start, he allowed only one run on four hits over seven innings in a victory against the Cubs. In the win, he also struck out eight against only one walk on just 97 pitches.

The right-hander is 1-0 over his past three starts with a 1.33 ERA, 0.89 WHIP (walks + hits over innings pitched) and 23 strikeouts. Not bad for a guy demoted to the minors earlier this year.

“A couple of guys I fell behind and ended up walking, but once I was ahead, the slider was there and they just kept swinging over the top of it so I kept throwing it,” Nolasco told the Associated Press of a recent start. “It was late, sharp. So, I'm going to keep throwing it until guys prove they can hit it."

                Slumping

                Jason Berken (Baltimore Orioles)

Each start is like a reoccurring nightmare for Berken: hordes of players simply smacking his pitches for line drives over and over again.

Berken (1-9, 6.93 ERA) is allowing opponents to hit .315 against him as he has allowed at least seven base runners in each of his past seven outings. In his most recent start, an 18-10 loss to the Red Sox, he lasted just 1 1-3 innings after he coughed up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks.

And it’s hard to find any encouraging numbers for the 25-year-old. He has struck out just 33 against 25 walks and has an astronomical 1.71 WHIP.

"I think he's stuck and we have to do something to get him out of neutral," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said of his young hurler.

                Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox)

The way the left-hander has pitched in his past two starts, it feels like his perfect game was last year, not last month.

Since extending his MLB-record consecutive outs streak to 45 against the Twins, he has allowed 12 earned runs over his next five innings with no strikeouts. In his most recent start, an 8-5 loss to the Yankees, he was tagged for seven earned runs on 12 hits in just 4 1-3 innings.

"You go out there and get 45 straight guys out, and then today, I can't get two guys out in a row," Buehrle said.

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Friday, August 7

Texas at L.A. Angels (10:05 p.m. EDT). Scott Feldman tries for his 11th win as the Rangers try to gain ground on the AL West-leading Angels, who send Joe Saunders to the mound in search of his 10th win.

                    STARS

                    Thursday

-Andre Ethier, Dodgers, hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Atlanta closer Rafael Soriano to give Los Angeles a 5-4 victory.

-Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals, had four hits and finished a double short of the cycle, driving in three runs in a 12-8 victory over the Marlins.

-Cliff Lee, Phillies, allowed one run in seven innings in his first home start since his trade to Philadelphia, and struck out nine in a 3-1 victory over the Rockies.

-Michael Young, Rangers, homered and drove in two runs to run his hitting streak to 13 games in a 6-4 win over the Athletics.

-Adrian Gonzalez, Padres, hit a two-run homer in a four-run third inning and drove in three runs, leading San Diego to an 8-3 win over the Mets.

-Alex Romero, Diamondbacks, had a two-run double in the 12th inning among his four hits and Arizona won its fifth straight, 11-6 over the Pirates.

                    BIG PAPI'S BIG MEETING

David Ortiz and incoming players' union head Michael Weiner have planned a news conference for Saturday at Yankee Stadium before the Red Sox play New York. Big Papi said last week that the union confirmed his name is on the list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. Ortiz said he's still waiting for more information on the result.

                    ON THE BOARD

New York ended a nine-game skid against Boston dating to last season, with a 13-6 win. It was the Yankees' longest drought in one of baseball's most heated rivalries since they lost 17 straight from Oct. 3, 1911, to July 1, 1912.

                    MONEY IN THE BANK

Cliff Lee made an impressive debut at Citizens Bank Park, pitching seven strong innings in the Phillies' 3-1 win over the Rockies. Lee allowed one run and six hits, striking out nine in his first home start since the reigning AL Cy Young winner was traded from the Indians.

                    ETHIER SAID THAN DONE

The Dodgers' Andre Ethier hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Atlanta closer Rafael Soriano for his major league-leading fifth walkoff hit of the season and a 5-4 win over the Braves.

                    GOOD COMPANY

Bobby Abreu homered leading off the fifth inning in the Angels' 9-5 victory over the White Sox, extending his hitting streak to 12 games and giving him 250 career home runs. He joined Willie Mays, Rickey Henderson, Joe Morgan, Barry Bonds and Craig Biggio as the only players with 250 homers, 2,000 hits, 1,000 runs, 1,000 RBIs, 1,000 walks and 300 stolen bases.

                    WE HAVE A WINNER

Kansas City's Bruce Chen, who had lost his past 13 decisions, earned his first victory since Oct. 2, 2005, while with the Baltimore Orioles. Chen held the Mariners to two runs, despite giving up 10 hits and a walk in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-2 win.

                    THERE'S NO "I'' IN TEAM ...

The Nationals went 7 for 12 with runners in scoring position in their 12-8 win over the Marlins. ... Detroit is a baseball-best 19-6 at home since June 6. ... The Orioles have lost 15 of 20 since the All-Star break.

                    ... BUT THERE'S A "ME''

The Phillies' Jimmy Rollins has a 12-game hitting streak, and is batting .338 since an 0 for 28 slump. ... The Tigers' Rick Porcello (10-7) became the second pitcher in franchise history with double-digit wins by the age of 20 or younger, joining Dave Rozema.

                    THE GREATEST

Muhammad Ali received a warm welcome at Yankee Stadium before New York's game against the Red Sox. The boxing great pointed and waved to the crowd as he rode along the warning track in a golf cart, and the cheers grew louder as he approached home and the crowd chanted " Ali! Ali!'' The former heavyweight champ fought across the street at the old Yankee Stadium in 1976, beating Ken Norton in a 15-round unanimous decision. His adopted son, Asaad Ali, is a catching prospect who was drafted by the Angels in the 40th round of the June draft.

                    FEELS LIKE HOME

Seattle's Mike Sweeney hit his 100th home run at Kauffman Stadium in an 8-2 loss. Sweeney played his first 13 years in the majors with the Royals.

                    NEGATIVE POSITIVES

Outfielder Edgardo Baez and shortstop Ofilio Castro of the Nationals' Double-A team at Harrisburg have been suspended for 50 games each under baseball's minor league drug program after testing positive for an amphetamine. There have been 48 suspensions this year under the minor league program and four under the major league program.

                    MORE PUNISHMENT HANDED OUT

Brewers star Prince Fielder and Dodgers pitcher Guillermo Mota have been fined for their run-in this week. MLB will not suspend them and the amounts of the fines were not disclosed. Mota hit Fielder with a pitch in the ninth inning of a 17-4 Dodgers victory, presumably as payback for Milwaukee pitcher Chris Smith grazing Manny Ramirez. After the game, Fielder charged across a hallway toward the Dodgers' clubhouse before he was restrained by teammates.

                      This Day in Baseball

On August 7 in Baseball History...

1888 - At a stormy meeting in Philadelphia, American Association owners finally vote to allow 25 cent admission again. They drop the percentage system of paying visitors and replace it with a $130-per-game guarantee.

1893 - Facing a left-handed Brooklyn pitcher, New York first baseman Roger Connor bats right-handed for the first time in his career and slugs out two homers and a single in a 10-3 win.

1907 - Walter Johnson pitched the first of his 416 victories as he led the Washington Senators over the Cleveland Indians 7-2.

1915 - As Brooklyn's rookie pitcher Ed Appleton steps to the mound, St. Louis manager Miller Huggins, coaching at third base, calls for the ball. The rookie tosses the ball to him, Huggins steps aside, and the Cardinal runner scores. A change in the rules will prevent such trickery in the future.

1922 - Ken Williams of the St. Louis Browns hit two home runs in the sixth inning of 16-1 victory over the Washington Senators.

1923 - Cleveland's Frank Bowerman went 6-for-6 with a double and five singles as the Indians routed the Washington Senators 22-2.

1950 - White players Lou Chirban, Stan Mierko, and Frank Dyle of the Chicago American Giants are barred by police from playing in the Negro American League against the Birmingham Black Barons.

1956 - The largest crowd in minor league history, 57,000, saw 51-year-old Satchel Paige of Miami beat Columbus in an International League game played in the Orange Bowl.

1968 - Joe Keough of the Oakland A's pinch hit a home run in his first major league at-bat in the eighth inning against the New York Yankees and the A's won 4-3 in 10 innings.

1971 - The New York Mets bombarded the Braves at Atlanta Stadium, 20-6. Ken Boswell led the Mets with four hits and five RBIs including a grand slam off Mike McQueen.

1978 - Eddie Mathews, Addie Joss, and Larry MacPhail are inducted at Cooperstown.

1985 - Commissioner Peter Ueberroth announced a tentative agreement ending a two-day strike. The season resumed Aug. 8.

1992 - The Giants announce that the team has been sold to Tampa Bay investors for a reported $110 million and will move to St. Petersburg for the 1993 season. Other owners will block the move in November, but one benefit is that the 1992 season finale becomes the first sellout at Candlestick since the 1989 World Series.

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Reds: The Reds have lost 14 of their last 16 games. They have dropped eight in a row on the road and have yet to win in California, having been swept in three-game series at San Diego and Los Angeles. The Reds are 9-26 in their last 33 away from home. They have dropped 13 of their last 16 against National League West Division clubs. It’s asking a lot of Homer Bailey to right Cincinnati’s sinking ship. Bailey (2-3, 7.06 ERA) has yet to come close to becoming the ace the Reds once envisioned him to be. Cincinnati is 5-17 in Bailey’s 22 starts. The right-hander gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings during his last start, a 6-2 loss to Colorado on Saturday. Bailey gave up one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings during his previous visit to San Francisco two years ago.

The Reds are 1-10 in Bailey’s last 11 starts versus a team with a winning record.
The Under is 6-1 in Bailey’s last seven road starts.

Key Injuries - Jay Bruce (wrist) and Chris Dickerson (shoulder) are on the DL.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$3.00 O/U 7.5 over -$1.25): This is the highest the Giants have been favored all season. Their previous high was when Tim Lincecum (12-3, 2.18 ERA) was -$2.45 at home against the Padres and Joshua Geer on July 9, in a game the Giants won, 9-3. Lincecum is 7-2 with a 1.39 ERA and 96 strikeouts in his last 10 starts, spanning 77 2/3 innings. He has struck out at least eight in each of his past 10 starts. The right-hander shut out the Phillies on Saturday in his last start going eight innings in a 2-0 victory. San Francisco has won eight of its last 10. Freddy Sanchez is 7-for-18 (.389) with four runs scored since coming to the Giants from the Pirates. The Giants are 19-7 in Lincecum’s last 26 starts as a home favorite. The Giants have the best home mark in baseball at 37-16.

The Under is 20-7-2 in the Giants last 29 games as a favorite.
The Under has cashed 7 of the last 10 times when Lincecum has been a home favorite.

Key Injuries - Nate Schieholtz (hip) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Tampa Bay Rays at Seattle Mariners [10:10 PM ET]

Rays: Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.62 ERA) is a solid candidate for American League Rookie of the Year. The Rays right-hander is 8-2 with a 2.70 ERA since May 13. The Rays are 14-3 in Niemann’s last 17 starts. They are 9-2 in his last 11 road starts. Niemann’s road figures, though, are 6-3 with a 4.12 ERA compared to 4-2 with a 2.89 ERA at home. The Rays have lost eight of their last 11 away contests versus teams with a winning home record. However, Tampa Bay is 5-1 in its last six games. The Rays were idle on Thursday. That means they have a rested a bullpen. Their relief pitchers rank fourth in the majors in ERA. Tampa Bay starters have turned in eight quality starts in a row. The under has cashed 10 of the past 11 times the Rays have been ‘dogs.

The Under is 20-6 in the Rays’ past 26 road contests.

Key Injuries - Akinori Iwamura (knee) is on the DL.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mariners (-$1.35, O/U 8 under -$1.20): Seattle is 24-8 (75 percent) the past 32 times it has been chalk. A big reason is Felix Hernandez (12-4, 2.78 ERA). Seattle is 9-1 in his last 10 starts. The Mariners also are 17-8 the past 25 times Hernandez has started the opener of a series. The right-hander, though, has better numbers on the road than at pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. Hernandez is 8-1 on the road with a 1.96 ERA, while 4-3 with a 4.01 ERA at home. This is Hernandez’s first start against Tampa Bay this season. He held the Rays to one run in eight innings during his lone start against them last year. Hernandez has given up a combined nine earned runs, 17 hits, three home runs and five walks with four strikeouts in his last two starts spanning 12 2/3 innings facing Toronto at home and Texas on the road.

The Under is 44-22-2 in Seattle’s last 68 games.

Key Injuries - Endy Chavez (knee) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
