Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bet
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Dream at San Antonio Silver Stars (-4, 155)

The Dream have emerged as a legitimate contender for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. But to become elite, the team must learn to win on the road, where it has had the same, reoccurring nightmare this season.

Atlanta is just 3-7 away from home this year and has dropped five of its past seven on the road. The team’s most recent road win was a 98-95 victory over a floundering Shock squad. The seven losses in opponent’s gyms, however, have come by an average of fewer than six points per game.

Meanwhile, the Silver Stars have been playing great at home, winning six of nine overall, including their past two. San Antonio is led by MVP candidate Becky Hammon, who averages 20.9 points, 4.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

The Dream will keep it close, but the nightmare on the road continues.

    Pick: Silver Stars

Seattle Storm at Los Angeles Sparks (+2.5, 136)

Despite losing five of seven games, Lisa Leslie believes the Sparks are close to returning to an elite status.

"I feel like we're really close to getting over that hump," Leslie, who recently returned from a seven-week absence due to injury, told the Associated Press. "I know we have the best rebounders in the world. We just have to commit to going to the boards every time."

And Los Angeles has dominated the boards against the Storm this season, out-rebounding them in two of their three meetings. But it has been Seattle that’s won the battle on the scoreboard two out of three times, winning once in overtime, once by a field goal and getting blown out by 27 in its only trip to the City of Angels.

The Storm has split their past two games overall with both going to overtime, but should have enough to make it three out of four against the Sparks.

    Pick: Storm

      Len's Top 5

Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for August 6, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

      1. Quick Hits

The Red Sox and Yankees begin a 4 game series tonight at Yankee Stadium. (See #3)

The highlight of yet another loss for the Kansas City Royals, was a cat running around the field in fair territory. A one minute feline delay in the 5th inning.

Phil Mickelson returns to the golf tour today in Akron Ohio after a 6 week absence. He said his wife and mother are doing well in their fight against breast cancer.

The New York Observer reports that once again Roger Federer will stay in his $3,075 per night suite at the Carlyle Hotel during the U.S. Open. He'll rest his head on custom R.F. monogrammed pillows.

      2. You're the Mann

So if you had to choose a player who should be the highest paid player in NFL history, who would you pick? If you had to choose the greatest quarterback in NFL history, who would he be? How about the best quarterback now playing? Where would Eli Manning rank on your three lists? Doesn't matter. He is now numero uno. A $97.5-million extension over 6 years. See what one little Super Bowl victory in New York can do for your bank account?

      3. World War III

You've got it all in the Bronx tonight. The Yankees begin their series with the Red Sox leading Boston by 2 1/2 games. Before it's over, it could be a battle for first place. Throw into the mix David Ortiz being outed for performance enhancing drugs. Red Sox ownership tweaking the Yankees over their "Yankee Universe" slogan. And then
there's the minor detail that Boston is 8-0 vs. the Yankees this season. I think the umps are going to have their hands full as soon as a batter gets drilled by a pitch. Maybe to set the mood, Muhammad Ali is being honored before the game.

      4. Huh?

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith ran up lots of hills in the off season. He said " I wanted more lower-body explosion." Hmm. He wanted diarrhea?

      5. You Cannot be Serious!

They think they've finally found the next British Wimbledon champ. There's a kid in Leicestershire named Jonah Ziff. They love his forehands, backhands and serves and they're impressed that he beats players who are 4 years older. Jonah is 2 and still wears diapers, so no need for potty breaks during his matches.

Happy Birthday: The Admiral, former NBA center David Robinson. 44.
Bonus Birthday: Punky Brewster. Actress Soleil Moon Frye. 33.

Today in Sports: The Pirates Willie Stargell hits the first fair ball completely out of Dodger Stadium (506 feet). 1969.
Bonus Event: The atom bomb is dropped on Hiroshima. 1945.
