    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, August 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox and Rays meet again in Tampa Bay, the Tigers take on the Orioles, and the Padres try to top the Braves.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Brad Penny (7-5, 5.07 ERA) will take on David Price (4-4, 5.10 ERA) as the Red Sox conclude their two-game set against the Rays in Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. Righthander Penny will be looking to bounce back from his last outing, in which he surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits over five innings in a loss to the Athletics. Lefthander Price is coming off a strong start against the Royals in which he gave up just one earned run on five hits over seven innings of work.

Elsewhere around the American League on Wednesday it'll be the Yankees at Toronto, Minnesota at Cleveland, Seattle at Kansas City, the Angels at the White Sox, Texas at Oakland, and Baltimore at Detroit. Orioles righthander Jeremy Guthrie (7-10, 5.37 ERA) will get the ball in that contest; Guthrie has given up 11 earned runs over his last 13 1-3 innings of work. The Tigers will counter with Edwin Jackson (7-5, 2.64 ERA), who has only two victories in his last 10 outings.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

Tommy Hanson (5-2, 3.25 ERA) will take the mound for the Braves on Wednesday as they finish off their road series in San Diego. Righthander Hanson is coming off back-to-back losses to the Dodgers and Brewers, but allowed only six earned runs over 13 innings in those outings. The Padres will give the ball to Chad Gaudin (4-9, 4.76 ERA) on Wednesday night. Righthander Gaudin lasted just 1 2-3 innings versus the Brewers in his last outing, surrendering seven runs.

Also on the National League slate for Wednesday: St. Louis at the Mets, San Francisco at Houston, Arizona at Pittsburgh, Florida at Washington, the Cubs at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at the Dodgers, and Colorado at Philadelphia. The Rockies will try to get a win out of Jorge De La Rosa (9-7, 4.68 ERA) in that matchup; Colorado has won nine of the lefthander's past 10 trips to the mound. J.A. Happ (7-2, 2.97 ERA) will try to shake off a two-game skid for Philadelphia.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there is just one game on the WNBA schedule for Wednesday, with Chicago at Indiana. The Eastern-leading Fever are on a three-game winning streak which sees them at 15-4 straight-up and 12-7 against-the-spread on the season; they beat Washington 87-79 last time out. The Sky (10-10 SU, 7-13 ATS) have won each of their past two games, topping Connecticut 84-72 last time out. Indiana beat Chicago 84-74 when the teams last met back on July 15.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Evan Longoria tied game with 8th-inning HR, won game with 13th inning HR; he also was walked intentionally and whiffed four times.

-- Florida led 4-0 in 8th, then Nationals scored six times in bottom of 8th to beat the Marlins 6-4, the kind of game playoff teams don't lose.

-- Tom Gorzelanny won his first start as a Cub, 6-3 at Cincinnati.

-- Rays have dropped BJ Upton to 7th in batting order, as his season from hell continues. Jason Bartlett is now batting leadoff in St Pete.

-- Albert Pujols homered in 8th-10th innings, as Cardinals scored twice in 9th to tie game, then won 12-7 in 10, a brutal loss for the Mets.

-- Gio Gonzalez allowed 11 runs in 2.2 IP July 20; in three starts since then, against Bronx-Boston-Texas, he is 2-0, 1.89.

Wednesday's Den: Playing name association with NFC teams

This is purely subjective-- but this is what name I think of first when I think about each team. One name, number or stadium only.........we'll do the AFC teams tomorrow.

-- Arizona-- Seeing Larry Fitzgerald racing down middle of field with the go-ahead TD in last year's Super Bowl, it was like watching 70 years of futility disappear with one play. #11 is now the face of this franchise.

-- Atlanta-- For better or worse, it is Michael Vick, who is the first QB to win a road playoff game at Lambeau Field, but will be known forever for less positive reasons. Didn't have a good second option here.

-- Carolina-- Kicker John Kasay is last original Panther on the squad.

-- Chicago-- Lot of choices here, but since I'm a little older, Dick Butkus is my choice. Just the name-- Butkus-- makes you think football. Bears have an assistant offensive line coach, Luke Butkus, #51's nephew.

-- Dallas-- Had trouble with this one, but settled on Roger Staubach; to me, the three greatest QBs ever are Staubach, John Elway, Steve Young, and if I had to choose one guy with the ball on my own 20 at the 2:00 warning down three points, I'd take Staubach or Kurt Warner.

-- Detroit-- The number 20. I'd like to know another franchise where one number was worn by three better players than Lem Barney, Billy Sims and Barry Sanders. If you can think of one, please let me know.

-- Green Bay-- Vince Lombardi. Seeing as NFL championship trophy is named after the man, and he won five titles in nine years, there's not lot of room for discussion here.Best coach in NFL history? Maybe.

-- Minnesota-- I was in Twin Cities in 1998, went to **** of America, a terrific ****. Little did I know this **** was built where Metropolitan Stadium once stood. God I hated that place, where my Rams lost their best chances to win Super Bowls back in the 70's. When I think of the Vikings, I think of that damn cold outdoor stadium.

-- New Orleans-- Saints were incredibly inept before Jim Mora was the coach, but he made them winners quickly, and for most part, they have been good ever since. Some interesting choices here-- Archie Manning, Drew Brees, the city itself, but Mora turned the Saints around.

-- NY Giants-- Lot of history here; first instinct was to say Bill Parcells but he's bounced around so much its hard to associate him with just one team. I'm going to say Lawrence Taylor, the dominant personality on the Super Bowl title teams in the late 80's/early 90's.

-- Philadelphia-- Andy Reid has made the Eagles a perennial contender, keeping the Birds up near the top in a city that is totally hungry for the first Eagle championship since 1960. He seems like a nice guy, but also has had to battle some off-field problems with his kids.

-- Rams-- I was in the Edward Jones Dome in January 2000 when Kurt Warner hit Ricky Proehl for NFC-winning TD with 3:00 left, then sat and held my breath as the Ram defense stopped Tampa Bay and won an NFC title. As a Ram fan, there is only one choice here: Kurt Warner.

-- San Francisco-- Jerry Rice is by far the greatest receiver in history of the NFL; his presence opened up plays for teammates, and always made his QBs look just a little bit better than they were. What a great player.

-- Seattle-- My friend Phil is a huge Jim Zorn fan, but my choice here is Steve Largent, who went from Hall of Fame WR to Congressman. Did anyone ever get more out of his talent than Largent? What great hands.

-- Tampa Bay--When I think of the Bucs I think defense, and Derrick Brooks was a great defensive player for a long time by the Bay. I'm not even sure I've ever heard the guy speak-- all he did was play ball.

-- Washington-- Redskins won three Super Bowls with three different QBs under the tutelage of Joe Gibbs, so even though two of those titles came in strike-plagued seasons, there is no other choice here.

            SCOREBOARD

            Wednesday, August 5

Milwaukee at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 p.m. EDT). Fresh off his longest outing in a few years, Jason Schmidt (2-1) will try to lift the Dodgers to another victory. Schmidt lasted six innings, giving up one hit in a 5-0 win over the Braves on July 31.

            STARS

            Tuesday

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, hit two homers including a grand slam in the 10th inning of a 12-7 victory over the New York Mets.

-Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp, Dodgers. Ramirez ended his 10-game RBI drought with a homer and a two-run double, and Kemp homered and finished with four hits and five RBIs in Los Angeles' 17-4 victory over Milwaukee.

-Evan Longoria, Rays, hit two homers, including the game-winning two-run shot in the bottom of the 13th inning of a 4-2 victory over Boston.

-Scott Podsednik, White Sox, had an RBI single with two outs in the ninth to lift Chicago to a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

-Adam Dunn, Nationals, hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in a 6-4 victory over Florida.

            NEAR NO-NO

Arizona's Yusmeiro Petit took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and combined with Leonel Rosales on a one-hitter in a 6-0 win at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. Petit, who snapped a seven-game losing streak with his first victory in more than 11 months in his previous start, walked three and struck out four in eight innings. The right-hander threw a season-high 107 pitches - 73 for strikes - in going longer than seven innings for the first time in his career.

            STRONG STARTS

Scott Baker allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings of Minnesota's 10-1 victory at Cleveland on Tuesday night. He struck out four and walked one. ... Tom Gorzelanny allowed one run and three hits in 7 1-3 innings and had an RBI single in the Chicago Cubs' 6-3 victory at Cincinnati. ... Jonathan Sanchez gave up four singles and struck out eight in seven scoreless innings to snap a nine-game road losing streak in San Francisco's 8-1 victory at Houston. ... Javier Vazquez gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings, winning his fourth consecutive decision as the Braves beat the Padres 9-2. ... Gio Gonzalez took a no-hitter into the fifth before finishing with 6 2-3 strong innings in Oakland's 6-0 win over Texas. ... Andy Pettitte limited Toronto to one run and four hits in 6 2-3 innings, helping the New York Yankees to a 5-3 victory over the Blue Jays.

            SNAPPED

Adrian Gonzalez's consecutive games streak of 314 games ended Tuesday night when the Padres' All-Star was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game to give him extra rest. But unlike Monday night, when he extended the longest active streak by entering the game in the ninth as a defensive replacement, Gonzalez stayed on the bench during San Diego's 9-2 loss.

            START AND FINISH

Ichiro Suzuki homered on the second pitch of the game then ended it with a great sliding catch as the Seattle Mariners outlasted Kansas City 7-6 on Tuesday night, snapping a five-game losing streak against the Royals. Kansas City loaded the bases with two outs against Seattle closer David Aardsma with two singles and a walk. John Buck lifted a high fly ball to right and Suzuki went into a feet-first slide to make the game-ending catch in foul territory.

            WINNING DEBUT, LOSING DEBUT

Brian Matusz won his major league debut, pitching five strong innings in Baltimore's 8-2 victory at Detroit, spoiling Jarrod Washburn's first start with the Tigers. Matusz, the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft, allowed a run and six hits, walking three and striking out five. Washburn, acquired from Seattle on July 31, gave up six runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings.

            ALL OR NOTHING

Evan Longoria went 2 for 6 with two homers - including a game-ending two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning - and struck out four times in the Rays' 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. Longoria homered in the eighth off Daniel Bard, tying the score 2-2, then hit the tiebreaking shot off Takashi Saito five innings later.

            EVERYDAY INDEED

Texas' Eddie Guardado appeared in his 900th game, pitching a scoreless seventh in the Rangers' 6-0 loss at Oakland on Tuesday night. Guardado became the fifth left-hander to appear in as many games, and ranks third among active pitchers in games.

            SHUT DOWN

Troy Glaus' bulging disk in his lower back has not responded to treatment, forcing the St. Louis Cardinals to end the third baseman's minor league rehab assignment. Glaus had arthroscopic shoulder surgery in January and hasn't played all season. Glaus was examined by team doctors in St. Louis over the weekend and the club said it will be a week to 10 days before he's able to resume baseball activities. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Glaus may be able to return to the majors in September.

            SPEAKING

"I'm human. I'm not a machine. I work hard. I'm ready every day. I didn't put my head down. I don't change myself and I don't change my approach.'' - St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols, after snapping out of an 0-for-13 skid with two homers, including a grand slam in the 10th inning of the Cardinals' 12-7 victory over the New York Mets.

            SEASONS

            Aug. 5

1921 - Pittsburgh radio station KDKA and announcer Harold Arlin provided listeners with the first broadcast of a major league game. The Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5.

1932 - Detroit pitcher Tommy Bridges lost his bid for a perfect game on a bloop single by the 27th Washington batter, pinch-hitter Dave Harris. The Tigers beat the Senators 13-0.

1940 - John Whitehead of the St. Louis Browns pitched a rain-shortened, six-inning no-hitter for a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader.

1942 - Don Kolloway's two-out steal of home in the fifth inning was the only run as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0.

1969 - Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell became the only player to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium. Stargell's shot off Los Angeles' Alan Foster cleared the right-field pavilion and landed 506 feet from home plate. Stargell hit the right-field pavilion roof on May 8, 1973, off Andy Messersmith.

1973 - Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves pitched a 9-0 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

1984 - Cliff Johnson of the Blue Jays hit his 19th career pinch homer to set a major league record as Toronto beat the Orioles 4-3 at Memorial Stadium.

              This Day in Baseball

On August 5 in Baseball History...

1879 - After Providence pitcher Bobby Mathews gives up six runs in the first two innings, he switches positions with third baseman John Ward, who pitches shutout ball the rest of the way to rally the Grays to a 7-6 win. Captain George Wright will successfully employ this pitching scheme several more times during the season.

1921 - Radio station KDKA and announcer Harold Arlin provided the first broadcast of a major league game. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Phillies, 8-5, in Philadelphia.

1931 - Detroit pitcher Tommy Bridges lost his bid for a perfect game on a bloop single by the 27th Washington batter, pinch-hitter Dave Harris. The Tigers beat the Senators, 13-0.

1940 - John Whitehead of the St. Louis Browns pitched a rain-shortened, six-inning no-hitter for a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader.

1955 - After playing 274 straight games at second base, Nellie Fox is given a day off by White Sox manager Marty Marion. Fox will come back the next day and start a streak of 798 consecutive games.

1957 - The Brooklyn Sports Authority gets an engineering report on a 50,000-seat stadium in the downtown area. It will cost an estimated $20.7 million, including the land site. Indications are that there will be trouble finding a market for the bond issue.

1964 - After weeks of negotiating, Ford Frick tells the league presidents and club owners he will not run for another term as commissioner.

1969 - Willie Stargell is the first to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium. The shot off Alan Foster over the right field pavilion roof travels 506 feet.

1973 - Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves pitched a 9-0 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

1975 - The first eight Phillies hit safely in a game against Bill Bonham and the Cubs, setting a major league record. The Phils win easily 13-5.

1979 - Willie Mays, Warren Giles, and Hack Wilson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1980 - Expos manager Dick Williams wins his 1,000th career game, an 11-5 victory over the Mets at Olympic Stadium.

1984 - Toronto's Cliff Johnson hits his 19th career pinch home run, breaking the major league record of 18 he had shared with Jerry Lynch. Johnson's eighth-inning blast gives the Blue Jays a 4-3 win over the Orioles.

1986 - The Reds pound the Giants' new pitcher Steve Carlton for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings to win 11-6. Carlton records his 4,000th strikeout to join Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers to reach that plateau. The Giants release Carlton after this start and he joins the White Sox.

1990 - Hall of Fame induction ceremonies for Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan are rained out in Cooperstown, New York. The ceremony was conducted the following day at a local high school.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets (+120, 8.5)

Can we just go ahead and call 2009 a lost season for the Mets?

Barring a miraculous hot streak over its final 56 games, New York will be watching the postseason from home for a third straight season.

Injuries to the everyday lineup as well as the starting rotation and bullpen are the chief culprits for this season’s disappointing showing.

And while there remains hope that All-Stars Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran will return sometime this month, you have to question the three core players’ motivation to get back.

The atmosphere in the Cards' locker room is much more optimistic. The club is humming along in the NL Central, and its newest acquisitions (LF Matt Holiday and 2B Mark DeRosa) are loving life in St. Louis.

                      Pick: Cards

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (-126, 9.5)

For those of you who watched the Rays’ 10-4 win over the Royals, you may have gotten a sneak peek at Tampa Bay’s new batting order.

Manager Joe Maddon gave leadoff man B.J. Upton and designated hitter Pat Burrell the day off Monday.

Maddon, instead, threw shortstop Jason Bartlett into the No. 1 hole and let Willy Aybar take his cuts at DH. Both players were key contributors in the victory.

Maddon was noncommittal on whether the moves would become permanent, but there’s reason to think they will. Aybar has three more homers than Burrell in 71 fewer at-bats, while Upton’s on-base percentage has dropped to a puke-invoking .318.

Expect the Rays to take this game while the Red Sox daydream about the following day’s contest versus the Yankees.

                      Pick: Rays

                        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Jorge De La Rosa (Colorado Rockies)

No member of the Rockies has benefited more from the midseason managerial change to Jim Tracy than De La Rosa.

The lefthander is 9-2 in 11 starts since Tracy took over in late May. He has won his last seven outings, working at least 5 2-3 innings in all of them while allowing no more than three earned runs in any of them.

"He's dealing with adversity a lot better," Tracy told the team's web site. "He's not overthrowing the ball, not rushing, he can get his pitches in the strike zone. When he does that with the stuff that he has, he's a very tough guy."

During his unbeaten streak, De La Rosa has a 2.70 ERA despite making five starts in hitter-happy Coors Field. One reason for De La Rosa's prolonged success has been his ability to limit the long ball. He has given up just three homers in his last 46 2-3 innings as a starter after allowing four in his previous 15 innings.

                        Rich Harden (Chicago Cubs)

The right-hander is in his best stretch of the season, even though his win-loss record may not reflect it.

In his last four starts, Harden is 2-0 with a pair of no-decisions in which the Cubs managed just three runs. He has gone four straight starts without allowing three runs for the first time this season.

There's more. In addition to a 1.50 ERA, Harden has allowed just 18 hits and walks while striking out 32 in 24 innings, including a season-high 11 in just five frames in his last outing.

Among pitchers with at least 90 innings, Harden is second in the NL in strikeout ratio, averaging 10.56 per nine innings.

                        Returning

                        Joe Martinez (San Francisco Giants)

The rookie righty will face Houston in his first major league start. He pitched twice in relief in April but took a line drive to the forehead off the bat of Milwaukee's Mike Cameron. He suffered a concussion, three hairline skull fractures, internal bleeding and a black eye.

Martinez underwent multiple CAT scans and was hospitalized for several days. More than a week after the incident, he still had no memory of it.

After a period of inactivity and eight rehab starts at three different levels of the minor leagues, Martinez is back in the majors with the Giants still searching for rotation consistency behind Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain.

Martinez was 0-1 with a 3.35 ERA in 37 2-3 minor league innings. He was 10-10 with a 2.49 ERA for Double-A Connecticut in 2008.

                        Kyle Davies (Kansas City Royals)

Davies has not pitched since June 19, after getting sent to the minor leagues because a prolonged stretch of poor outings. Davies is taking the rotation spot of Sidney Ponson, who was designated for assignment.

In his last seven starts before his demotion, Davies was 1-6 with a 6.30 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP (walks + hits per inning). He allowed eight homers in that stretch, and his only win came in a contest where he pitched the minimum five innings.

In eight starts at Triple-A Omaha, Davies was 4-2 with a 2.14 ERA. He was sent to the minors to work on command of his fastball.

"We still want to see it be better," Royals manager Trey Hillman told the team's web site. "It's just time to get him back up here and ride it out, get him back in the rotation and, hopefully, he performs well."

                        Slumping

                        Sergio Mitre (New York Yankees)

Take a good look at the journeyman right-hander filling the fifth spot in the rotation. He is getting worse with every outing, which is not a good sign for a team already monitoring Joba Chamberlain's innings.

In Mitre's first start, he worked his way through 5 2-3 innings to get a win. In his next start, he gave up four runs and nine hits in just five innings but received no decision. In his last outing, he was roughed up for five runs and seven hits in three innings and took the loss.

The innings are shortening, the runs are growing and the price on Mitre is shrinking. Those are telltale signs of a slumping pitcher.

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds [7:05 PM ET]

Cubs (-$1.65 O/U 9): Tom Gorzelanny celebrated his first win in his first start with the Cubs and Kosuke Fukudome smacked his first career leadoff home run to lead the Cubs to Tuesday’s 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the middle game of this three-game series. The win allowed the Cubs to stay tied with the Cards atop the NL Central standings and lifted Chicago’s road record to 24-29. The Cubs have now won 14 of 19 games since the All-Star break, the best mark in the National League. Rich Harden (7-6, 4.50 ERA) matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in his last start against the Marlins, but didn't get the win. The right-hander threw 99 pitches over five innings and left with the score tied. Harden has now fanned 11 batters three times in his career and has nine double-digit strikeout games. Harden allowed the Marline two runs on five hits and three walks in a game the Cubs eventually lost, 5-2. The Cubs are now 9-9 in Harden’s first 18 starts, with the ‘under’ going 9-7-2. The ‘under’ is 56-45-4 in Chicago’s first 105 games, including 30-20-3 in the club’s first 53 road encounters. Harden has won both starting assignments against the Reds this season (5-2 and 7-2), allowing a combined three runs on nine hits and fanning 16 batters in 12 innings. Both games were played at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are 10-3 in their last 13 games.

                              Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Reds: Cincinnati has now lost 14 of its last 15 games, including the last eight in a row. The loss lowered the Reds’ home record to 23-29. Cincinnati has also lost eight of 11 meetings against the Cubs this season, including the last six in a row. In addition, the Reds have failed to score more than three runs in any of the last four setbacks. After nine relief appearances this season, Justin Lehr's first starting assignment Friday against the Rockies ended earlier than he had hoped after the right-hander walked six batters in just five innings encompassing 97 pitches. Lehr allowed two runs in the first and then walked the bases loaded in the second before escaping with just one run. He settled down over the next three innings and didn't allow a run. Lehr will make his second career start, and look for his first win against the Cubs.

The Reds are 6-23 in their last 29 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Scott Rolen (head) is doubtful.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4
