    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, August 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees begin a series in Toronto, the Red Sox take the field against the Rays, and the Dodgers try to top the Brewers.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Andy Pettitte (8-6, 4.51 ERA) will take on Roy Halladay (11-4, 2.68 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Yankees begin a short two-game series in Toronto. Lefthander Pettitte surrendered just a single earned run on five hits over 6 1-3 innings against the White Sox last time out, but had to settle for a no-decision in a New York loss. Righthander Halladay gave up three earned runs on 11 hits over seven innings in a loss to the Mariners in his most recent trip to the mound.

Also on tap around the American League on Tuesday: Minnesota at Cleveland, Baltimore at Detroit, Seattle at Kansas City, the Angels at the White Sox, Texas at Oakland, and Boston at Tampa Bay. Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester (9-7, 3.90 ERA) will try to get back into the win column in that contest; he took a no-decision against the A's last time out, allowing four earned runs in 5 2-3 innings. Righthander Matt Garza (7-8, 3.69 ERA) will counter for the Rays Tuesday night.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.84 ERA) vs. Johan Santana (12-8, 2.96 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Cardinals and Mets begin a series in New York. Righthander Pineiro has been on a roll for St. Louis lately, surrendering just five earned runs over his last five outings (all Cardinals victories). Lefthander Santana blanked the Rockies on four hits over seven innings in a win in his most recent outing; Santana has picked up the victory in three of his past four outings.

Elsewhere around the National League on Tuesday it'll be Arizona at Pittsburgh, Colorado at Philadelphia, Florida at Washington, the Cubs at Cincinnati, San Francisco at Houston, Atlanta at San Diego, and Milwaukee at the Dodgers. Yovani Gallardo (10-7, 3.13 ERA) will take the hill for the Brewers in that contest; the righthander has won two straight starts. The Dodgers will counter with righthander Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.44 ERA), who last picked up a victory on July 3.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The WNBA returns to action on Tuesday night with three games on the schedule: San Antonio at Los Angeles, New York at Detroit, and Phoenix at Seattle. The Mercury and Storm hold down the top two records in the Western Conference heading into their Tuesday matchup, with Phoenix at 15-6 (15-6 against-the-spread) and Seattle at 12-7 (9-10 against-the-spread). Those two teams last met back on July 1, with the Mercury pulling out a 93-81 home victory in that contest.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Today we take a look at the ACC's Atlantic Division

-- Clemson-- 15 starters back, but new QB and coach going through his first full season as head coach. All five starters on OL are back. Main reason TBowden got fired? Tigers haven't been in ACC title game yet.

-- Florida State-- Seminoles are just 7-13 vs spread as home favorite in last four years; they've got eight starters back from offense than ran it for 4.8 ypc LY. FSU is better but their '09 schedule is pretty tough.

-- Boston College-- Another new coach, four starters back on OL and a mobile QB. BC's new coach is defensive guru Spaziani-- his defense has held foes under three yards per rush in three of last four seasons. Eagles are 11-2 vs spread in last 13 tries as road underdog.

-- NC State-- Third year in Raleigh for O'Brien, whose Wolfpack have covered 21 of last 28 as road dog this decade. He's lost to his old club BC the last two years; this season, on Oct 17, O'Brien will beat BC.

-- Wake Forest-- Jim Grobe makes my list of top five college football coaches in America; he's 87-77, coaching at Wake/Ohio U, not exactly two football hotbeds. Deacons have a senior QB with 36 career starts.

-- Maryland-- Only nine starters back for Terp squad that won four of its last five bowl games; they're 3-12 as home favorite since '04. They are going to get spanked Sept 5, when Cal avenges last year's debacle.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

      13) First note is sad for me; most of you probably don't care, but the Arena Football League is going to declare bankruptcy and go away for good this week, a victim in part of its own success.

      12) Instead of enjoying its popularity in the mid-sized markets like Des Moines and Albany (yes, we supported our team well here), a lawyer who ran the league (it is funny how lawyers wind up in the middle of disasters) decided to try and go into NFL markets like Indianapolis and Long Island, where people didn't give a rat's ass about the AFL, because there is so much else to do. So sadly, the league dies a quiet death.

      11) I'm going to do a bigger piece on the AFL later this week-- after all, I had season tickets to Albany Firebird games for 10 years-- it was fun.

      10) Its been 20 years since there's been an SEC-Pac 10 bowl matchup, which is surprising and disappointing, but at least LSU is going up to Seattle to play Washington, and Arizona State is going between hedges to play Georgia this fall. Games like this need to happen more often.

      9) Wonder why Penn State plays so many home games? Their smallest home crowd last year was 105,106 and that was against Temple. Six of the Nittany Lions' first seven games this year are in Happy Valley.

      8) Cool baseball moment on TV last week, when Willie McCovey spent an inning in Giants' TV booth; while he was on, Pablo Sandoval hit one into McCovey Cove, which doesn't happen much anymore since Barry Bonds retired. McCovey might have hit baseballs as hard as anyone I've ever seen play the game-- what power he had.

      7) We don't think about the physical wear and tear on umpires enough; take Mark Wegner, who worked the plate in Cardinals' 15-inning win against the Dodgers last week. Of the 453 total pitches in the game, 252 had to be called ball/strike, and it was a tense game, so each call is really important. Umpires never sit during games, so on a hot summer night in the midwest, calling 252 pitches ball or strike ain't easy. Wonder what he felt like when he woke up the next morning.

      6) Anyone have any idea why Orlando Cabrera is on his sixth team in the last six seasons? He ain't great, but he is closer to good than bad, and he plays every day plus he can hit a little bit. Must be some reason he never stays anywhere for too long.

      5) I've been hard on Bob Geren this summer, but he pushed every right button in ninth inning Monday, as A's woke up just in time to hand the Rangers a damaging 3-2 loss late Monday, first time Texas lost this year when they led after eight innings.

      4) With tying run on first, instead of pinch-running speedy Rajai Davis, he rewarded Davis' recent 10-25 hitting spurt by pinch-hitting him and pinch-running Bobby Crosby instead. Davis rewarded the move with a game-winning double to short right field, giving Oakland an unlikely 3-2 win, after they trailed 2-0 after eight, mustering just two hits. So this is a win you give to the manager and the rapidly improving Davis.

      3) Mike Scioscia is by far the best manager in baseball. Not close, and his Angels are my favorite team's biggest rival.

      2) Cubs lost Ryan Dempster's last nine road starts; not only that, their bullpen is 1-7 in games where Dempster doesn't get a decision.

      1) Underrated fact: Pittsburgh Steelers have had three head coaches in the last 40 years. Rams have had three coaches in the last ten months, but they're more the norm than a franchise like the Steelers.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bet
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Mercury at Seattle Storm (-2.5, 171.5)

By filling up the basket at a record-setting pace and giving little thought to defense, the Phoenix Mercury are starting to look like another fast-break team from their hometown … the NBA’s Phoenix Suns.

The major difference is that the Mercury appear to be able to pull off this style over the long haul. Their 92 points per game is the best in the league and their 88.6 points per game on defense is the WNBA’s worst. However, Phoenix’s blissful ignorance of defense doesn’t seem to matter.

Diana Taurasi and friends have won and covered in five of their past six road games, and have won eight of 10 overall. They face a Seattle Storm (12-7) team that boasts the league’s best defense at 71.3 ppg, but history is on the Mercury’s side.

Last week, Connecticut (15-6) had the WNBA’s top defensive squad before Phoenix came in and delivered a 95-80 beat down. Given that road venues and vaunted defenses don’t bother the Mercury a bit, it’s hard to go against them here.

        Pick: Phoenix

New York Liberty at Detroit Shock (-5, 147)

This game involves a tale of two teams struggling to find their way under new leadership amid a season of unfulfilled promise.

The defending-champion Shock have struggled to regain their form under Rick Mahorn, who took over when Bill Laimbeer resigned. Some Shock players have publicly admitted having difficulty in adjusting to Mahorn’s lower-key temperament.

Detroit (6-10) picked up some momentum with a 91-83 home win over the Minnesota Lynx, but was then routed by the Connecticut Sun 83-65 in Detroit.

The underachieving New York Liberty (6-12) fired coach Pat Coyle last week after the latest in a series of uninspired efforts. Coyle was replaced by Anne Donovan.

“I just felt with a full half of a season left perhaps a new voice would jump-start us to get us game by game out of the hole,” Liberty president and general manager Carol Blazejowski said.

Although both clubs continue to struggle, the Liberty have kept four of their past five losses to six points or fewer. They have also covered in two of their past three road games, despite losing and leaving bettors empty-handed in four straight overall.

One of these teams will come away with a renewed outlook on its season, while the other likely will start looking toward next year.

        Pick: New York

          SCOREBOARD

          Tuesday, August 4

Boston at Tampa Bay (7:08 p.m. EDT). Jon Lester (9-7, 3.90 ERA) faces Tampa Bay's Matt Garza (7-8, 3.69) in the opener of a two-game series at Tropicana Field. The Red Sox have won four consecutive games.

          STARS

          Monday

-Rajai Davis, Athletics, had a pinch-hit triple down the right field line to drive in two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and lift Oakland to a 3-2 victory over Texas .

-Clete Thomas, Tigers, homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Detroit a 6-5 win over Baltimore.

-Randy Wells, Cubs, took a shutout into the eighth inning and helped Chicago beat the Reds 4-2.

-Mark Reynolds, Diamondbacks, hit two home runs to lift Arizona to a 6-5 win over the New York Mets.

-Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals, homered to help Washington rally to beat Pittsburgh 8-4 .

-Carl Crawford, Rays, had three hits and three RBIs to lead Tampa Bay to a 10-4 win over Kansas City.

          SURGERY

Arizona Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb had shoulder surgery Monday, putting an end to a difficult season for the usually durable right-hander. Arizona was expected to be a playoff contender this year with Webb and Dan Haren at the front of its rotation. But Webb never pitched again after a no-decision against Colorado on opening day and the Diamondbacks quickly fell off the pace in the NL West.

          WILD THING

Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw lost for the first time since June 10, issuing a season-high six walks, including four straight in the fourth inning to bring in two of his three runs allowed. Kershaw had an 0.79 ERA in his previous nine starts.

          SNAPPED

Matt Cain lost for the first time in the last six games he started with the Giants' 4-3 defeat to Houston. Cain (12-3) failed in his bid to become the fourth pitcher in Giants history to win 13 of his first 15 decisions in a season. He allowed two homers in a game for the first time since June 9.

          STRUGGLING

Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang lost his ninth straight decision with the Reds' 4-2 defeat by Chicago. Harang (5-13), who leads the majors in losses, hasn't won since May 25. It's the deepest slump of his career and the longest losing streak by a Reds pitcher since Danny Graves lost 10 straight between the 2003 and 2004.

          STATS

Alex Gonzalez was out of the Reds' starting lineup and ended an 0-for-20 slump when he homered in the eighth inning. ... The A's won for the third time in 53 games when trailing after the eighth inning. ... Oakland outfielder Rajai Davis has 16 RBIs since the All-Star Break. ... Zack Greinke allowed six runs and 10 hits over five innings, and is 0-4 in six starts since his last win on June 28 at Pittsburgh. He is 0-3 in five career games, including four starts, at Tropicana Field. ... Royals 3B Alex Gordon, hitless in 11 at-bats in the first three games of the series, was out of the starting lineup. Gordon is 0 for 34 overall at Tropicana Field.

          SPEAKING

"This is one of my favorite starts of my career. In the past, I would have fallen apart - when I struggled in the first, I would never make it out of the fourth. Tonight, I went eight and kept us in the game.'' - Detroit starter Justin Verlander, who gave up five runs in the first inning before settling down to stymie the Orioles the rest of the game.

          SEASONS

          August 4

1910 - Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia A's and Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox hooked up in a 16-inning scoreless tie. Coombs struck out 18 and allowed three hits.

1929 - The Cleveland Indians, down to their last out and trailing 6-5, scored nine runs in the ninth inning for a 14-6 victory over the New York Yankees.

1955 - Chicago's Ernie Banks hit three home runs at Wrigley against three Pirates pitchers to lead the Cubs to an 11-10 win.

1963 - New York's Mickey Mantle, batting for the first time in two months after breaking his left foot, hit a pinch home run as the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-10 for a split of a doubleheader.

1982 - Joel Youngblood became the first player in major league history to play and get a base hit for two different teams in two different cities in the same day. In the afternoon, his hit drove in the winning run for the New York Mets in a 7-4 victory at Chicago. After the game, he was traded to the Montreal Expos and played that night in Philadelphia. He entered the game in right field in the fourth inning and later got a single.

1985 - Tom Seaver, 40, became the 17th 300-game winner in major league history with a six-hitter - all singles - as the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 on Phil Rizzuto Day. Seaver walked one and struck out seven, giving him 3,499 in his 19-year career.

1985 - Rod Carew of the California Angels got his 3,000th hit in a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins, his first major league team.

1989 - Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost consecutive no-hit bids with two outs in the ninth inning last September, came within one out of a perfect game before settling for a two-hit 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees. Roberto Kelly's double spoiled Stieb's bid.

1997 - Brad Radke of Minnesota posted his 12th straight victory, pitching seven strong innings in the Twins' 9-3 win over Toronto. Radke became the third pitcher since 1950 to win 12 consecutive starts.

2006 - Chase Utley went 0-for-5 in Philadelphia's 5-3 victory over the New York Mets, ending a 35-game hitting streak that tied him for the 10th longest in major league history and the fourth longest in National League history.

2007 - Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player in major league history to hit 500 home runs with a first-inning homer in a 16-8 victory over Kansas City. Rodriguez's homer came eight days after the slugger celebrated his 32nd birthday, eclipsing Jimmie Foxx (32 years, 338 days). A-Rod became the 22nd player to reach the mark.

Today's birthdays: Scott Linebrink 33; Bob Howry 36

            This Day in Baseball

On August 4 in Baseball History...

1901 - Cincinnati and Pittsburgh players are clocked while running from home plate to first base. The fastest time for the 90-foot sprint is three seconds flat, by Pirates outfielder Ginger Beaumont.

1903 - Nap Lajoie is so furious that umpire Tommy Connolly has put an old black ball into play that he hurls the ball over the grandstand. His act results in Cleveland forfeiting the game to Detroit.

1909 - Umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting at Athletics second baseman Eddie Collins, who had questioned a call. This incident eventually leads to Hurst's banishment from baseball two weeks later.

1910 - Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia A's and Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox hooked up in a 16-inning scoreless tie. Coombs struck out 18 and allowed three hits.

1929 - The Cleveland Indians, down to their last out, scored nine runs in the ninth inning for a 14-6 comeback victory over the New York Yankees.

1941 - In the third inning, catcher Mickey Owen catches three foul flies, the first time in the major leagues that feat has been recorded. His Dodgers whip the Giants 11-6.

1963 - New York's Mickey Mantle, batting for the first time in two months after breaking his left foot, hit a pinch home run in the ninth inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-10 and give the Yankees a split of a doubleheader.

1983 - While warming up before the fifth inning of the Yankees 3-1 win over the Blue Jays game at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium, New York outfielder Dave Winfield accidentally kills a seagull with a thrown ball. After the game, Winfield is brought to the Ontario Provincial Police station on charges of cruelty to animals and is forced to post a $500 bond before being released. The charges will be dropped the following day.

1985 - The 40-year-old Tom Seaver became the 17th 300-game winner in major league history with a six-hitter — all singles — as the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 on Phil Rizzuto Day. Seaver walked one and struck out seven, giving him 3,499 in his 19-year career.

1993 - Tony Gwynn has six hits against the Giants. It is the Padres outfielder's fourth game of 1993 with five or more hits. He becomes only the third person to get five hits or better that many times in a season.

1996 - Jim Bunning and Earl Weaver are inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

1997 - Brad Radke of Minnesota got his 12th straight win, pitching seven strong innings in the Twins' 9-3 victory over Toronto. Radke became only the third pitcher since 1950 to win 12 consecutive starts.

On the heels of an embarrassing three-game home sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels, the good news for the Minnesota Twins is that they are headed to face one of the few teams in Major League Baseball with a less-decorated pitching staff.

Welcome to Cleveland, where what’s left of the staff after the trade of Cliff Lee has an MLB-worst ERA of 5.19. The Twins are 25th at 4.66 after a weekend in which they were outscored 35-15 by the Angels in dropping all three games.

Minnesota has a little more mojo in its favor. The club is 4-0 in its last four against the AL Central and 8-1 in its last nine Tuesday games. The Twins also have won their last six games in which starter Scott Baker is a mild favorite.

                    Pick: Twins

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (-110)

For even money or the general neighborhood, you have to like the value that the Red Sox present in this game.

The David Ortiz steroid controversy hasn’t distracted them from the task at hand. The Sox are 4-0 since the news broke and have outscored their opponents 36-20 during this span. The addition of catcher Victor Martinez was Boston’s signature late-season move, and Boston appears to be rounding into postseason form with its latest outings.

Although the Rays aren’t out of it by any stretch, their failure to make a trade-deadline move was seen as a sing of no confidence by some fans and local media.

They are 5-5 in their last 10, but looked outclassed most of the time last week in dropping two of three at home to the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

                    Pick: Red Sox

                      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

                      Johan Santana, New York Mets

New York’s marquee starter appears to have shrugged off some early-season struggles and reminded the Mets’ fans and management why he is deserving of his enormous contract.

Santana (12-8, 2.96 ERA) has done his part to help lead New York’s moderate resurgence by going 3-1 in his past four starts. Although he gave up five earned runs in a loss at Houston, Santana sandwiched that outing with three shutout performances in which he blanked the opposition for 21 straight innings.

The 30-year-old lefty gave up four hits over seven innings his last time out in a win over the Colorado Rockies. He has struck out 21 batters and walked seven during this streak.

                      John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels

Long the anchor of the Angels’ rotation, Lackey (7-4, 4.00 ERA) has returned to his reliable form just in time to help the red-hot team’s 26th-ranked pitching staff.

After battling a forearm injury for much of the early season, Lackey has won his past four starts while allowing just seven total earned runs in this span.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander has gone at least seven innings during this run, which includes a complete-game shutout of the Oakland A’s on July 19.

                      Slumping

                      Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees

New York’s rock-solid veteran lefty has lost a bit of his touch of late, going 0-3 with two no-decisions in past five trips to the hill.

Pettitte (8-6, 4.51 ERA) endured back-to-back outings against the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels in which he was tagged for six earned runs. The 37-year-old also has put some pressure on New York’s bullpen by failing to get past the sixth inning in four of his five previous outings.

                      Jose Contreras, Chicago White Sox

Contreras (4-10, 4.80 ERA) has been nearly as bad as his record indicates, but he has been just inadequate enough to come out on the losing end of close contests.

The 37-year-old right-hander has gone 2-5 in his past seven starts and has lost his past three decisions. Contreras has yielded 11 earned runs and 20 hits over 15-plus innings in this span, which includes a loss to the Minnesota Twins in his last performance.

Keeping up the success rate for pitchers in each month is always a good game plan. Each month I try to help out by showing which pitchers are good bets and which ones should be avoided.

Below is the list of arms to watch throughout the month of August. Note that the win-loss records are those of the team in which the listed pitcher started over the previous three seasons.

Here’s the list of the best and worst pitcher performance records during the month of August over the past three years. Note: a handful of pitchers on this list are currently on the disabled list but could return to the rotation sometime this month. Keep a close eye on their status.

                        August’s best pitchers:

A.J. Burnett 11-5 (New York Yankees), David Bush 11-5 (Milwaukee Brewers), Josh Johnson 7-3 (Florida Marlins), Brett Myers 9-3 (Philadelphia Phillies), Roy Oswalt 14-2 (Houston Astros), Brad Penny 10-4 (Boston Red Sox), Ervin Santana 10-4 (Los Angeles Angels), Johan Santana 14-4 (New York Mets), Jake Westbrook 9-2 (Cleveland Indians), Randy Wolf 10-2 (Los Angeles Dodgers).

                        August’s worst pitchers:

John Danks 2-9 (Chicago White Sox), Kyle Davies 3-8 (Kansas City Royals), Zach Duke 2-8 (Pittsburgh Pirates), Jeremy Guthrie 4-9 (Baltimore Orioles), Gil Meche 4-12 (KC), Scott Olsen 5-12 (Washington Nationals), Nate Robertson 4-12 (Detroit Tigers), Jarrod Washburn 5-13 (Detroit), Chris Young 3-8 (San Diego Padres).

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: The Yankees dropped the first three games of a four-game road series against the White Sox before finally winning Sunday’s finale, 8-5. Since New York’s hurlers were tagged for 32 runs during the four-game set, it not surprising the ‘over’ went 3-1. Andy Pettitte will get the ball for New York in Tuesday’s opener of this brief two-game set. The veteran southpaw received another tough no-decision on July 30 at Chicago, hurling six innings of one-run ball before taking an unfortunate slip on the infield that set up Chicago’s go-ahead run. The Yankees eventually suffered a 3-2 loss, lowering their record to 13-8 in Pettitte’s first 21 starts. However, the ‘under’ improved to 14-7 when Pettitte takes the mound. In his past three starts, Pettitte has limited opponents to six earned runs in 20 innings, a 2.70 ERA, with little to show for it. Pettitte has split two starts against the Blue Jays this season, allowing a combined eight runs on 10 hits in 12 innings. The success occurred on May 13 when he allowed two runs on five hits in six innings en route to an 8-2 win as a $1.02 road favorite. Both starts against Toronto have leaped ‘over’ the closing total.

The Over is 8-3 in the Yankees’ last 11 road games.

                              Key Injuries - None

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Blue Jays (-$1.45 O/U 8 under -$1.15): Toronto returns home after going 3-3 during a six-game West Coast excursion through Oakland and Seattle. The last three games against the A’s all jumped ‘over’ the closing total. The Blue Jays are 29-23 through their first 52 home games, but just 15-22 against southpaw starters and 12-20 in one-run games. Extra innings also doesn’t seem to agree with the Jays, evidenced by a 4-10 mark. Roy Halladay (11-4, 2.68 ERA) makes his third start against the Yanks this season. Halladay, whose name was included in countless trade rumors, remains the ace of Toronto's rotation. Lately, the right-hander has been taking the hill without the luxury of run support. Over his past four starts, in which Halladay has fashioned a 2.25 ERA, he has posted a 1-2 record due to having just nine runs from his offense. Halladay has just one win over his past seven outings and is 1-3 with a 3.00 ERA during that span. He is 1-1 against the Yanks this season. The success occurred May 12 when he registered a 5-1 win as $1.27 home favorite. Holliday allowed just one run on five hits in a complete-game effort that required just 103 pitches. Curiously, the Blue Jays are just 11-9 in Holliday’s first 20 starts, with the ‘over’ also going 11-9.

The Under is 11-2-2 in Toronto’s last 15 home games.

                              Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
