    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, August 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono, Philly battles the Giants, and the Angels close out a set with the Twins.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Mark Buehrle (11-4, 3.45 ERA) will be trying to pitch the White Sox to a win over the Yankees on Sunday afternoon when he takes the mound at home against CC Sabathia (10-7, 3.83 ERA). Lefthander Buehrle followed up his perfect game by giving up five earned runs over 6 1-3 innings in a loss to the Twins last time out. Lefthander Sabathia is also coming off a losing effort; he surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits over 5 2-3 innings against the Rays on Tuesday night.

Also on the American League schedule for Sunday: Detroit at Cleveland, Boston at Baltimore, Kansas City at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Oakland, Seattle at Texas, and the Angels at Minnesota. Los Angeles will send Jered Weaver (10-3, 3.71 ERA) to the mound in that last matchup; the righthander last picked up a win on July 11, but the team is 5-0 in his last five starts. The Twins will counter with lefthander Glen Perkins (6-6, 5.42 ERA), who beat the White Sox in his last start.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Chad Billingsley (10-6, 3.96 ERA) vs. Jair Jurrjens (9-7, 2.69 ERA) as the Dodgers take on the Braves in Atlanta on ESPN's primetime matchup. Righthander Billingsley was knocked around by the Cardinals in his last start, giving up six earned runs over 5 2-3 innings of work in a loss. Righthander Jurrjens took a no-decision against the Marlins last time out after allowing two earned runs in six innings; Jurrjens had won each of his previous three outings.

Elsewhere on the NL slate for Sunday it's Colorado at Cincinnati, Arizona at the Mets, Washington at Pittsburgh, Houston at St. Louis, Milwaukee at San Diego, the Cubs at Florida, and Philadelphia at San Francisco. Cole Hamels (7-5, 4.42 ERA) is Philly's pitcher for Sunday; the lefthander is 3-0 with two no-decisions in his last five outings, with his team winning all those games. Barry Zito (6-10, 4.54 ERA) goes for the Giants; he's allowed only two runs over his last 12 2-3 innings.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Tony Stewart is pegged as the 4/1 Vegas favorite to win Sunday's Sprint Cup Series event, the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. Stewart won the Pocono 500 on that track earlier this season, and he holds a 192-point lead on Jimmie Johnson in the driver standings heading into the race. Johnson, who took the checkered flag at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last week, is next on the list at 5/1 odds to win the Pennsylvania 500. Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards are pegged at 7/1, with Denny Hamlin and Mark Martin at 10/1

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA has just two games on the schedule for Sunday, with Connecticut at Detroit and Indiana at Washington. The Fever have won two straight games, which moved them to 14-4 straight-up and 11-7 against-the-spread on the season (tops in the Eastern Conference). The Mystics, who are trying to catch Indiana in the conference standings, are coming off a 78-75 win over New York in their last game. Washington is 10-8 SU and 11-6-1 ATS so far.

        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (+104, 9.5)

The Tigers must get excited when they see Cleveland on their schedule. Entering the weekend, Detroit had taken seven of 10 from the Tribe. Detroit leads the AL Central, but the club needs a chance to get back on track after dropping four of five.

The Tigers tout a streaky lineup, but it has been their pitching that has failed them the past few games. Detroit hurlers have given up an average of almost six runs a night.

But Cleveland is no fan of Detroit pitching. The Indians have scored three or fewer runs against the Tigers six times this season, including two shutouts.

Detroit’s bats should do just enough to help their pitchers get back in the winning swing.

        Pick: Tigers

Los Angeles Angels at Minnesota Twins (+114, 10)

When these two teams meet, runs are guaranteed to be scored.

Seven of the team’s eight meetings have easily passed the total this year, with the two teams combining to average 11 runs per game. This offensive production is typical of the Angels, who lead the majors in batting average (.288) and are second in runs scored (566). But it may shock some to find out the Twins also swing a pretty big stick.

Minnesota is ninth in the majors in batting average (.266) and runs scored (501) and has a 29-23 over/under mark in the Metrodome.

The Angels are one of the best plays to beat the total this year, posting an over/under mark of 60-37-4 overall and 28-19-2 on the road.

        Pick: Over

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streaking

          Jon Garland (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Garland’s record doesn’t show it, but he is becoming one of the most consistent pitchers in the National League.

The right-hander is 5-10 with a 4.42 ERA, numbers that won’t set the world on fire. But, he has turned in a quality start in five of his past six outings. His ability to eat up innings and hold opponents to three or fewer earned runs on a consistent basis gives his club a great chance to win every night.

In his most recent outing, he was his typical self, giving up just three earned runs over six innings while striking out two against the Phillies.

“I think over my last six or seven, I've gone out and given my team a pretty darn good chance to win the ball games," Garland told the Associated Press. "That's my job.”

          Cole Hamels (Philadelphia Phillies)

The 25-year-old lefty is finally starting to look like the postseason star we saw last October.

Hamels (7-5, 4.42 ERA) has won three straight decisions and the Phillies have won his past five starts overall. In his previous three outings, he has allowed a combined five earned runs over 20 innings.

In his most recent start, a 4-3 win over Arizona, he yielded only one run on four hits over eight innings with nine strikeouts and no walks.

With an impressive 105:21 strikeout-to-walk ratio, look for his resurgence to continue.

"Hamels is getting there," Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's real close. I'm looking for him to throw shutouts and no-hitters."

          Slumping

          Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels)

Not many people are happier to see July end than this young right-hander.

Weaver (10-3, 3.71 ERA) finished the month with a brutal 6.38 ERA. He allowed no fewer than three runs in each of his starts during the month and never lasted past the seventh inning.

In each of his past three starts, Weaver allowed at least four runs and lasted an average of just over five innings. Weaver’s most recent outing saw him give up four runs on eight hits over five innings, including two walks and two home runs.

          Carlos Villanueva (Milwaukee Brewers)

Milwaukee’s pitching situation has gotten so bad, that even a bad reliever seems like a good option.

With injuries to starting pitchers Jeff Suppan and Dave Bush, the struggling Villanueva was called on to make his first start of the year last week against the Nationals. And it wasn’t pretty.

He was tagged for five runs on eight hits in just four innings, including a pair of homers. Villanueva (2-8, 6.61 ERA) was just as bad in his previous two stints out of the bullpen, giving up a run in each of those appearances.

Sunday Night Baseball: Dodgers at Braves
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday Night Baseball: Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves

A hot August night in Atlanta sets the scene for the ESPN Sunday night showdown between the Braves and the Dodgers at Turner Field.

Dodger All-Star Chad Billingsley (10-6 3.96 ERA) matches serve with Jair Jurrjens (9-7 2.69 ERA) in a battle of promising right-handers.

            Second-half track

Coasting along with the biggest lead at the All-Star break, the Dodgers headed into Atlanta at 7-7 post-break, including 1-3 away from Chavez Ravine.

Meanwhile, the Braves’ 9-5 mark since the break, including 6-2 at home, has put them back in the in the National East chase, trailing the second place Florida Marlins by two games.

Leading the surge has been outfielder Garret Anderson. Heading into the series opener on Friday, Anderson was riding an MLB-best .465 batting average in 12 games since the All-Star break, including four home runs and eight RBIs.

            Black-and-blue

Be sure to check out the status of outfielder Ryan Church, shortstop Yunel Escobar and second baseman Martin Prado. All three players were on the pine nursing injuries prior to the start of this series.

Church was scratched in favor of Matt Diaz. Diaz has been good against the Marlins historically, and Church is still experiencing some soreness in his hyper extended right elbow. He was not available to pinch-hit.

Escobar (sore right wrist) left Thursday’s game in Florida.

Prado took a Matt Diaz line drive off his left ankle during batting practice Thursday. He was not available off the bench because of swelling.

"He makes the lineup go,” said manager Bobby Cox on Prado, who has sparked the Braves' offense since becoming the starting second baseman and batting second in the order.

            Missing pieces

Both teams made moves to bolster their roster before the non-waiver trade deadline.

L.A. acquired former All-Star closer George Sherrill from Baltimore on Thursday. Sherrill is most welcome considering the Dodgers bullpen had pitched a staggering 354 innings this season prior to the start of this series. The key is that Sherrill has pitched just 41 1-3 innings, far fewer than any of the relievers who have been in the Dodgers’ bullpen continuously since opening day.

However, the move didn’t please shortstop Rafael Furcal. He was hoping the Dodgers would add a main arm to the starting staff.

"Right now, this team is special, very special. It reminds me of some of those really good teams I played for in Atlanta,” Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal told reporters.

Meanwhile the Braves sent Casey Kotchman to the Red Sox for Andy LaRoche in a swap of first basemen.

LaRoche, who previously played for the Braves from 2004-06, has hit at least 20 homers each of the past four seasons, while Kotchman hit a total of eight in the 130 games he played for the Braves.

            The arms have it

Jurrjens allowed two runs on seven hits, walked one and had five strikeouts Tuesday night against the Marlins in Florida. He settled for a no decision. Jurrjens, who could easily be 13-3 on the season with a little better run support, is 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA his last three home starts

Billingsley had a one-hitter through five innings before coming apart in a 10-6 loss at St. Louis on Tuesday. The game was delayed for nearly an hour and a half because of a threat of heavy rain that never came.

Billingsley was tagged for four hits, six runs and six walks in 5 2-3 innings. The All-Star has struggled of late on the road where he is 2-3 with a 6.37 ERA his last five road starts.

            Courageous call

While the Dodgers have won six games in a row away from home on Sundays, they had dropped six of their previous seven games at Turner Field prior to the start of this series.

It’s hard to overlook a pitcher who has been perfect in his MLB career against tonight’s opponent (Jurrjens, 2-0 1.38 ERA) versus another that is winless lifetime (Billingsley, 0-2 7.86 ERA) against Atlanta. Be brave and back Atlanta.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves [8:10 PM ET]

Dodgers: The rubber game of this three-game series will be the featured ESPN Sunday night telecast. The Dodgers captured Friday’s opener 4-0 before suffering their sixth loss in the last nine days when they dropped Saturday’s 4-3 decision at Atlanta. The loss lowered the Dodgers’ road record to 30-23 and saw their record in one-run games slip to 20-11. The setback was especially painful because it occurred against Derek Lowe, who held his former teammates to three runs on five hits in six innings. Chad Billingsley (10-6, 3.96 ERA) breezed through five innings against a loaded Cardinals lineup during a scoreless duel in his most recent start. The right-hander was cruising with a one-hitter, but then imploded with a pair of walks and couldn't get out of the sixth inning. He was charged with six earned runs and six walks (two intentional) en route to a 10-0 loss. It was the second time in three starts that he's allowed six runs. He has one win since June 14 and is 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA lifetime against the Braves. However, the Dodgers are 14-8 in Billingsley’s first 22 starts this season, with the ‘over’ going 11-7-1.

The Over is 5-0 in Billingsley’s last five road starts.

                        Key Injuries - None

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Braves (-$1.25 O/U 8.5): Chipper Jones, Nate McLouth and Adam LaRoche each had two hits for Atlanta in Saturday’s victory. The narrow win enabled the Braves to improve to 18-15 in one-run games and to 28-24 at home. McLouth scored twice and Jones had two RBIs. LaRoche scored the tying run in the sixth in his return to Atlanta following Friday's trade with the Red Sox. Jair Jurrjens (9-7, 2.69 ERA) was denied his bid to win a fourth consecutive start on Tuesday night when he allowed the Marlins two runs over six innings and was dealt a no-decision. The 23-year-old right-hander might be sad to see the calendar flip over to August, as he was 4-1 with a 2.09 ERA in his six July starts. Jurrjens went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers last year. The Braves are 11-11 in Jurrjens’ first 22 starts this season, with the ‘under’ going 14-7-1.

The Braves are 7-3 in their last 10 games as a favorite.

                        Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

                            SCOREBOARD

                            Sunday, Aug. 2

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox (2:05 p.m. EDT). CC Sabathia will head to the mound against Mark Buehrle in the finale of the four-game series between the teams. Buehrle broke the major league record for consecutive batters retired after following up his perfect game with another five perfect innings on Tuesday.

                            STARS

                            Saturday

-Andrew McCutchen, Pirates, homered three times and had a career-high six RBIs to help Pittsburgh rout Washington 11-6.

-Tim Lincecum, Giants, won his 12th game, blanking the Phillies for eight innings in San Francisco's 2-0 victory over Philadelphia.

-Josh Beckett, Red Sox, pitched seven innings of six-hit ball for his major league-leading 13th win in Boston's 4-0 victory over Baltimore.

-Matt Holliday, Cardinals, hit two solo homers and Chris Carpenter tossed an eight-hitter for his second complete game of the season in St. Louis' 3-1 victory over Houston.

-Angel Pagan, Mets, hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning and New York beat Arizona 9-6.

-Scott Podsednik and Gordon Beckham, White Sox, had four RBIs apiece and Chicago finished with 17 hits in a 14-4 rout of the New York Yankees.

-Ken Griffey Jr., Mariners, hit his 622nd career home run and Seattle beat Texas 7-2.

                            FLEXING

With his 25th homer, Aaron Hill became the first American League second baseman to reach that milestone since Alfonso Soriano in 2005. He is fourth in the league behind Justin Morneau (27), Mark Teixeira (26) and Carlos Pena (26).

                            SUPER START

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday hit two solo homers in St. Louis' 3-1 win over Houston. He also singled in the fourth and is hitting .606 with 10 RBIs in nine games since he was acquired from Oakland on July 24. Holliday is 7 for 8 in the first two games of the series with four RBIs and three runs scored. He struck out against Jeff Fulchino in the sixth.

                            SLUGGING

When the Angels hit three homers in the sixth inning of their 11-6 victory over Minnesota, it marked the first time the Twins gave up three homers in an inning since Aug. 17 of last season against Seattle. Conversely, it was the second time the Angels have hit three homers in an inning. They had three against Cleveland last season on July 27.

                            HONORING RICKEY

The Oakland Athletics retired Rickey Henderson's No. 24, honoring the prolific leadoff hitter less than a week after he was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. Henderson, who grew up in Oakland, repeated a line he used in Cooperstown, saying he was "very, very humbled.'' Henderson became the fifth Oakland player to have his number retired by the team, joining Dennis Eckersley (43), Rollie Fingers (34), Catfish Hunter (27) and Reggie Jackson (9).

                            THROWING ZEROS

The San Francisco Giants threw their major league-leading 15th shutout of the season when Tim Lincecum pitched eight scoreless innings and Brian Wilson closed out a 2-0 win over Philadelphia. The next closest team has nine.

                            WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?

There were 650 dogs in attendance for the "Dog Days'' celebration before the Giants' 2-0 win over the Phillies. Joining in the celebration, starter Tim Lincecum brought his 1-year-old French bulldog, Cy, to the ballpark. He stayed in the clubhouse during the game.

                            OUCH

Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano and Aramis Ramirez all left the Cubs-Marlins game early with injuries. None appeared to be serious. The Marlins shortstop bruised his left leg after being hit by a pitch. Zambrano had a tight back, and Aramis Ramirez was hit on the forearm by a pitch.

                            SPEAKING

"I've been dying to get a win. I really am. I've been working really hard. I think I'm making progress. I felt like today I could have won, but I just got beat.'' - Royals starter Bruce Chen (0-6), who had elbow ligament-replacement surgery in 2007, and last won in the majors on Oct. 2, 2005, at Tampa Bay with Baltimore.

                            SEASONS

1906 - The "Hitless Wonder'' Chicago White Sox began their AL record 19-game winning streak with a 3-0 win over Boston. The record would be tied by the 1947 New York Yankees.

1907 - Walter Johnson made his major league debut with the Washington Senators and lost 3-2 to the Detroit Tigers. The first hit he yielded was a bunt single by Ty Cobb. The Tigers beat "The Big Train'' 7-6 exactly 20 years later on Walter Johnson Day in the nation's capital.

1933 - Mickey Cochrane of the Philadelphia A's hit for the cycle in a 16-3 win over the New York Yankees.

1938 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals used a yellow baseball in the first game of a doubleheader as an experiment. The two teams went back to the white ball in the second game as the Dodgers swept the doubleheader 6-2 and 9-3.

1959 - Bill Bruton of Milwaukee hit three triples, including two with the bases-loaded, to lead the Braves to an 11-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

1987 - Eric Davis led off the bottom of the 11th inning with his 30th home run of the season to give the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Davis' homer made him the seventh - and earliest player in major league history - with 30 homers and 30 steals in the same season.

1998 - The Cuban national team claimed its 22nd gold medal at the World Baseball Championships, beating South Korea 7-1 and extending its winning streak at the event to 41 games since 1986.

2007 - Jermaine Dye homered twice and doubled twice, including a go-ahead drive that led the Chicago White Sox to a 13-9 victory over the New York Yankees. The White Sox and Yankees each scored eight runs in the second inning. It was the second time in major league history that both teams scored eight or more in an inning.
