    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, July 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox begin a series at Camden Yards, the Braves get a visit from the Dodgers, and the CFL continues Week 5.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

John Smoltz (1-4, 7.04 ERA) will be trying to hold onto a spot in the Red Sox rotation on Friday night when his team begins a series in Baltimore. Righthander Smoltz has been tagged with the loss in each of his last two outings, and he was beaten by the Orioles in his last trip to the mound (six earned runs over five innings). Baltimore will counter with righthander Jeremy Guthrie (7-9, 5.21 ERA), who is coming off a loss to Boston on July 25 (five earned runs in 6 2-3 innings).

Also on the American League schedule for Friday: Detroit at Cleveland, Kansas City at Tampa Bay, Seattle at Texas, the Yankees at the White Sox, Toronto at Oakland, and the Angels at Minnesota. Ervin Santana (3-6. 7.29 ERA) is slated to start for L.A.; righthander Santana gave up six runs over 3 2-3 innings against the Twins last time out. Nick Blackburn (8-5, 3.75 ERA) gets the ball for Minnesota; he was rocked by the Angels last time out (six runs in 3 2-3 innings).

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

Tommy Hanson (5-1, 2.95 ERA) will be on the hill for the Braves on Friday night as they host the Dodgers and Jason Schmidt (1-1, 7.88 ERA). Righthander Hanson took a hard-luck loss against the Brewers last time out, allowing just two earned runs over his seven innings of work. Righthander Schmidt lasted just three innings against the Marlins in his most recent outing, giving up five runs (four earned). Schmidt had beaten the Reds in his 2009 season debut on July 20.

Making up the rest of the NL slate for Friday: Washington at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Florida, Arizona at the Mets, Colorado at Cincinnati, Houston at St. Louis, Milwaukee at San Diego, and Philadelphia at San Francisco. Cliff Lee (7-9, 3.14 ERA) will make his Phillies debut in that contest. Lefthander Lee has won each of his last three starts, allowing four runs in 25 innings. The Giants will turn to Ryan Sadowski (2-3, 4.81 ERA), who has taken a loss in each of his last three outings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

There is one game on the Canadian Football League schedule for Friday, with British Columbia at Hamilton. The Tigers-Cats upset the Lions back in Week 2, pulling out a 31-28 road victory as a 13-point underdog. Heading into the Week 5 matchup Hamilton is 2-2 straight-up and 3-1 against-the-spread, while B.C. has disappointed at 1-3 SU and 1-3 ATS. For Friday night's contest the oddsmakers have the Lions listed as 2-point road favorites, with the total for the game at 50.5.

Finally, there is a single WNBA game on tap for Friday, as Detroit hosts Minnesota. The Shock last played on July 22, when they were edged 98-95 by Atlanta; that put Detroit at 5-9 SU and 5-9 ATS on the season. The Lynx fell 76-70 to Los Angeles in their last contest, which dropped them to 10-8 both SU and ATS on the season. Roneeka Hodges tossed in 14 points for the Lynx in that loss.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Cubs' Kevin Hart beat Houston 12-3, then was on his way east to join his new team, the Pirates- Chicago dealt him to Pittsburgh in a five-player trade that landed the Cubs lefty reliever John Grabow.

-- Lamar Odom decided to re-sign with the Lakers. Interesting choice.

-- Matt Holliday hit .520 in his first week as a St Louis Cardinal.

-- The great character actor Ed Lauter (prison guard in Longest Yard, hockey coach in Youngblood) guest stars on Psych August 7 on USA Network.

-- Brian McCann's homer in 10th inning gave Atlanta a 6-3 win against Florida, and let Braves avoid a sweep at the hands of the Marlins.

-- Matt Kemp's two-run single in 10th inning ended Dodgers losing streak-- LA beat the Cardinals 5-3 in St Louis.

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13......

The trading deadline is 4pm Friday, so any big deals that go down in the next 14 hours will render this article obsolete, but here goes anyway.... 13) Marlins-- Now that their new stadium is being built, would like to see them spend some cash and add a piece or two for the stretch run.

      12) Tigers-- Verlander has been dominant for much of this season; they have crafty skipper in dugout. Will be interesting to see if they going to do anything to upgrade their roster on Friday.

      11) Rockies-- Best starting pitching this team has ever had, and Street has been upgrade at closer over Fuentes. Un-Rockie-like 28-26 on road.

      10) Rays-- Funny team; Shields, Navarro, Pena are having down years, but they're still playoff contenders. Starting rotation is under .500 for the year- where are all the young starting pitchers we've heard about?

      9) Cubs-- Hart had been a plus for them, but they exiled him to western PA for lefty specialist Grabow; playing better since the All-Star break.

      8) Giants-- If Freddy Sanchez' knee is sound, they upgraded the offense bigtime this week. At end of the day, starting pitching still rules.

      7) Rangers-- Starting rotation has been hampered by illness; they tried to get Holland a complete game Thursday, but he fell one out short after he threw 118 pitches against Seattle. Washington had done a terrific job.

      6) Angels-- I'll be stunned if they do nothing at the deadline; this team is going to be in the playoffs, but they desperately need bullpen help.

      5) Red Sox-- This rating improves if they add Victor Martinez or Adrian Gonzalez at the deadline. Lowell's durability is a concern, and Ortiz is a declining star. 8-0 vs Bronx this season, still trail them by 2.5 games.

      4) Phillies-- World champs added Cliff Lee without subtracting anyone off their major league roster; well done. Blue Jays have to be sick to get totally left out of the trading activity.

      3) Cardinals-- Go-ahead run on third, two out, bottom of 8th, tie game, Pujols is up. Dodgers walk him intentionally. Then they walked Matt Holliday too, so Kuo could strike Ankiel out on three pitches. Thats the level of respect Joe Torre has for the Cardinals' latest acquisition.

      2) Bronx Bombers-- Hard to believe they'll stand pat before 4pm July 31, but they've been playing really well and may not need tinkering.

      1) Dodgers-- Stumbled on road this week (Ramirez was 3-18 with six strikeouts in St Louis), but added Sherrill Thursday to bolster bullpen. Still one of the teams mentioned to have shot at Roy Halladay.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bet
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Lynx at Detroit Shock (-4, 157.5)

Maybe President Obama should have offered the Detroit Shock a bailout. However, it’s unlikely the team would have accepted.

Fresh off a visit to the White House on Monday to celebrate their third WNBA title in the past six seasons, Shock players say they have nobody but themselves to blame for a 5-9 start that has been marked by injuries and an inability to finish close games.

There was also a shake-up on the sidelines, with longtime coach Bill Laimbeer leaving the bench and leaving the job to fellow former Bad Boy Rick Mahorn.

“The struggles we had at the beginning of the season have been on us, really,” Deanna Nolan said. “I think we’ve been beating ourselves. We have to play for 40 minutes. We just weren't closing out games. We were making mistakes, defensive errors. It’s those things we have to re-tune.”

The Shock have played three overtime games in July, losing three of them. A key defensive stop, clutch rebound or timely basket here and there could have changed the outcomes and the outlook of the season. Detroit lost 98-95 at home to the Atlanta Dream.

Detroit faces a Minnesota (10-8) team that started hot, but has lost five of its past seven. The Shock are the league’s best rebounding team at 36.2 per, while Minnesota is 10th in 13-team league at 31.3.

This game appears to present Detroit with an excellent opportunity to start the second half of the season on a positive note.

        Pick: Detroit

          B.C. Lions (1-3) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-2) +2, 51

Three weeks ago, the Tiger-Cats shocked the CFL followers by winning at B.C. place. Last week, the Lions were crushed 48-10 by Calgary and their owner felt the need to apologize to the fans.

The Tiger-Cats proved to be the toughest opponent the Alouettes faced in the first month of action. Now Hamilton is not only playing host to the Lions, but the club will also feature its new receiver Arland Bruce.

          Pick: Hamilton

          Saturday, August 1

          Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-2) at Calgary Stampeders (2-2) -10, 61

The Stamps are back on track after losing their first two games this season. They outscored their last two opponents by 92 points. The Riders, meanwhile, have allowed 81 points in their last two games, which should be a serious indicator of the game we can expect between these two.

The Stamps learned some very bad news yesterday: Their star receiver Ken-Yon Rambo won’t play again this season because of a right knee injury. Nonetheless, Calgary QB Henry Burris has other options and the Grey Cup defending champions have much more depth than their rivals from Regina.

          Pick: Calgary

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-3) at Toronto Argonauts (2-2) -4.5, 44.5

Michael Bishop is back in the CFL and is hoping to jump start Winnipeg’s anaemic offence. It might be too little, too late. The Bombers have deeper problems than a simple lack of production at quarterback.

The Argos have problems of their own. They just gave away their best receiver to Hamilton (Arland Bruce III) and have too many injured bodies. Adriano Belli has a serious knee injury and receiver Andre Talbot needs crutches to walk (ankle).

I expect the Argos to prevail but it won’t be pretty.

          Pick: Toronto

            SCOREBOARD

            Friday, July 31

Philadelphia at San Francisco (10:15 p.m. EDT). Cliff Lee will make his National League debut for the Phillies after being acquired from Cleveland on Wednesday.

            STARS

            Thursday

-Derek Holland and Michael Young, Rangers. Holland took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning and Young hit two of Texas' five home runs in a 7-1 win over Seattle.

-DeWayne Wise, White Sox, hit a game-ending RBI single in the ninth inning to give Chicago a 3-2 victory over the Yankees.

-Johan Santana, Mets, threw seven sharp innings, striking out eight, and New York beat the Rockies 7-0 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. The Mets dropped the second game, 4-2.

-Will Venable, Padres, hit a three-run homer among his four hits and had a career-high four RBIs, and San Diego romped to a 7-4 win over the Cincinnati.

-Kosuke Fukudome, Cubs, reached base five times and had four RBIs in a 12-3 win over Houston.

-Brian McCann, Braves, hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning, giving Atlanta a 6-3 victory over the Marlins.

-Matt Kemp, Dodgers, hit a two-run single in the 10th inning for his third hit, helping Los Angeles end a season-worst four-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals.

            TESTING POSITIVE

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz became the latest star implicated in baseball's ever-growing drug scandal, acknowledging that the players' union confirmed he tested positive in 2003. Shortly after hitting the go-ahead home run that beat Oakland 8-5, Ortiz responded to a story on The New York Times' Web site that he and former teammate Manny Ramirez tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs six years ago. Ramirez, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently served a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy. In 2003, 104 major leaguers tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs; the results were supposed to be anonymous and are now under court seal.

            SWAPPED

Looking to add a big arm to their bullpen, the NL West-leading Dodgers acquired former All-Star closer George Sherrill from the Baltimore. The rebuilding Orioles received third baseman Josh Bell and right-hander Steve Johnson, both of whom were at Double-A Chattanooga. ... The Chicago Cubs acquired left-hander John Grabow and lefty Tom Gorzelanny from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a five-player trade. Locked in a tight race atop the NL Central, the Cubs sent right-handers Kevin Hart, who got the win for the Cubs Thursday, and Jose Ascanio and minor league infielder Josh Harrison to the Pirates. ... The Royals have acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Detroit Tigers for cash.

            I'M SORRY

Mets general manager Omar Minaya said he apologized to New York Daily News reporter Adam Rubin for questioning his motives and credibility during a bizarre press conference. But the GM didn't retract his remarks when asked repeatedly if he stood by his critical comments Monday while announcing the firing of executive Tony Bernazard. After announcing Bernazard's dismissal, Minaya said Rubin had "lobbied'' him and others in the front office, including Bernazard, for a job in player development. Rubin denied he had asked Minaya for a job and insisted he had merely sought career advice.

            SETBACK

Arizona pitcher Brandon Webb has had another setback with his ailing right shoulder, raising the possibility the Diamondbacks ace may need surgery. Webb has consulted numerous doctors but has been unable to relieve stiffness and soreness in the shoulder. The 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner has not pitched since opening day and has been limited to throwing off flat ground.

            SEASON OVER

Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is scheduled to have season-ending shoulder surgery in August. Zumaya, who has had shoulder problems since an offseason injury in late 2007, last pitched on July 18 against the New York Yankees. The hard-throwing 24-year-old is 3-3 with a 4.94 ERA in 29 appearances this season. He has been on the disabled list in each of the last three seasons.

            SEVEN UP

Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa set a franchise record by winning his seventh consecutive start, a 4-2 win over the Mets in the second game of a day-night doubleheader. The left-hander allowed three hits to improve to 9-1 in his last 10 starts, the only loss coming on June 16 against Tampa Bay. He is 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA in six games this month, including his only relief appearance of the year on July 12 against Atlanta.

            SCORED ON

Yankees reliever Phil Hughes had his scoreless innings streak stopped at 25 1-3 innings in the 3-2 loss to the White Sox. Hughes came in to the game having not given up a run in his last 16 appearances. ... Guillermo Mota's scoreless stretch ended at 20 1-3 innings when he gave up a leadoff homer to Rick Ankiel in the eighth inning of the Dodgers' 5-3 win over St. Louis.

            OUCH

Orioles rookie Brad Bergesen allowed one run in seven innings, then hobbled off the mound after being hit with a line drive on his final pitch of Baltimore's 7-3 win over Kansas City. Bergesen was struck in the shin by Butler's sharp hit. Catcher Matt Wieters picked up the loose ball and threw out Butler to end the inning. X-rays were negative.

            STAYING POWER

Umpire Joe West, worked his 4,000th game, the Brewers' 7-3 win over Washington. West is the 19th man to work 4,000 games and fifth among active umpires.

            SPEAKING

"I've just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I lived my life I'm surprised to learn I tested positive.'' - Red Sox slugger David Ortiz after learning he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.

              This Day in Baseball

On July 31 in Baseball History...

1897 - Brooklyn pitcher Brickyard Kennedy becomes so upset at umpire Hank O'Day that he throws the ball at him. The baseball misses O'Day, who has his back turned, allowing George Davis to score the winning run for the Giants.

1909 - For the second time in two years, Bill Burns has a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the ninth, when Washington's Otis Clymer singles. Burns and the White Sox win 1-0. Burns is the only pitcher to suffer this fate twice until Dave Stieb of Toronto does on September 24 and 30, 1988.

1930 - Lou Gehrig drove in eight runs with a grand slam and two doubles as the New York Yankees outlasted the Boston Red Sox 14-13.

1932 - Cleveland's Municipal Stadium opened and Lefty Grove and the Philadelphia A's beat the Indians 1-0 before 76,979 fans.

1934 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 8-6 in 18 innings at Cincinnati as Dizzy Dean and Tony Freitas both went the distance.

1935 - The Reds oversell their night game, and 30,000 jam in for the match against the Cards. Kitty Burke, a female fan, slips under the ropes around the infield and grabs a bat. Paul Dean lobs a pitch and she grounds out. St. Louis manager Frankie Frisch demands it count as an at bat.

1935 - Two American League pitchers, Wes Ferrell and Mel Harder, each hit two home runs in a game.

1954 - Joe Adcock hit four home runs and a double to lead the Milwaukee Braves to a 15-7 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Adcock's eighteen total bases is a new Major League record.

1961 - The All-Star Game ended in a 1-1 tie at Fenway Park as heavy rain halted play. It is the only tie in All-Star history.

1962 - The National League rejects Commissioner Ford Frick's proposal for interleague play in 1963.

1972 - Dick Allen becomes the first player since 1950, and the seventh in history, to hit two inside-the-park homers in a game. Chicago beats the Twins 8-1.

1978 - Pete Rose singles off Phil Niekro to extend his streak to forty-four games, as the Reds edge the Braves 3-2. Rose ties Willie Keeler's 81-year-old National League record, achieved when foul balls didn't count as strikes.

1981 - The second baseball strike ended after forty-two days.

1983 - Brooks Robinson, Juan Marichal, George Kell, and Walter Alston are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York, bringing the total number of inductees to 184.

1988 - Jose Canseco belts two home runs in the A's 6-2 win over Seattle to become the first player to hit thirty or more home runs in each of his first three Major League seasons.

1989 - The Twins trade American League Cy Young Award winner Frank Viola to the Mets for five players, including pitchers Rick Aguilera, David West and minor leaguer Kevin Tapani. Viola is the first Cy Young winner to be traded during the following season.

1997 - The trading deadline makes for a busy day. One big name goes (Mark McGwire to St. Louis); one stays put (Ivan Rodriguez signs a five-year, $42 million contract with Texas); the Mariners trade away two of their best prospects (Jose Cruz, Jr., Jason Varitek) for three mediocre relievers (Mike Timlin, Paul Spoljaric, Heathcliff Slocumb); and a couple of veteran pitchers find their way to Cleveland (John Smiley, Jeff Juden). But no trade is as shocking as the one pulled off by the Giants, who get Wilson Alvarez, Roberto Hernandez, and Danny Darwin for six minor leaguers.

1998 - The annual trading deadline results in several significant deals, but none is bigger than the last-second swap between Houston and Seattle. The Astros get Randy Johnson shortly before midnight in return for minor leaguers John Halama, Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen. Two days later, Johnson wins his Astros debut against Pittsburgh.

                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Pittsburgh Pirates (+110)

Bad teams, like bad relationships, come with their own unique level of misery.

                      Meet the Pittsburgh Pirates.

As if losing their past five games while scoring a total of four runs wasn’t bad enough, the Pittsburgh faithful get the privilege of greeting their home team with the fresh news that the club has just plunged into further depths of Major League Baseball oblivion.

Although it’s difficult to call such a talent-deprived team a “seller” at the trade deadline, the Pirates always are willing to give anyone that a fellow team is willing to take. Pittsburgh’s annual dump sent Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson out of town, giving Pirates fans another reason to skip a trip to the ballpark.

The Nationals, although still the worst team in baseball record-wise, at least have a little more reason for hope. They have won four of their past six and have generally been playing a respectable brand of baseball of late.

Starter John Lannan (7-7, 3.25 ERA) has been solid, allowing three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 starts. A decent effort from him should be enough to topple what’s left of the downtrodden Pirates.

                      Pick: Nationals

Los Angeles Angels at Minnesota Twins (-145)

Tempo is usually a much bigger part of fast-paced sports such as basketball and football. However, it means everything to Twins starter Nick Blackburn.

When all of his pitches are working, Blackburn mows down opponents at a near record-setting pace. Two of his past four home starts have resulted in complete-game victories in which he gave up just one run. He barely clipped the 2-hour mark in each game.

“He’s been great,” Minnesota closer Joe Nathan said of Blackburn. “He’s been the guy that has been going out, being very consistent, going deep into games. Our game times are usually a lot quicker. He’s got a good pace going. We like it when he’s on the hill.”

Blackburn is 5-0 with an ERA of 2.67 at home this season. He has gone at least seven innings in eight of his past 10 starts. Angels starter Ervin Santana was blasted for six earned runs July 26 against the Twins in his last start.

                      Pick: Twins

                        Friday, July 31

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

                        Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves

After a forgettable debut to his Major League career, Hanson is showing why the Braves label him as their best pitching prospect to come along in years. Hanson gave up five earned runs and took a no-decision in his debut; since, he is 5-1 with two no-decisions and has yielded just 12 earned runs in that span.

The 22-year-old right-hander (5-1, 2.95 ERA) lost his last outing against the Milwaukee Brewers despite giving up just two runs in seven innings. In his pervious start, he struck out 11 San Francisco Giants in earning the win.

                        Braden Looper, Milwaukee Brewers

The former reliever has been a valuable addition to the struggling rotation of the Brewers, posting a record of 4-1 with two no-decisions in his past seven outings.

The 34-year-old Looper (9-5, 4.79) has been reliable in his 21 starts this season. He has given up three or fewer earned runs in five of his past seven starts, and the right-hander has logged at least six innings in all but one of those starts.

                        Slumping

                        Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians

Carmona’s struggling ways followed him through a demotion to the minors, but the trade of Cliff Lee has given him another chance. Cleveland fans better hope he makes the most of it.

The former 19-game winner was sent to the minors after a June 4 start against the Minnesota Twins in which he was scorched for seven earned runs. In his past three starts in the majors, Carmona (2-6, 7.62 ERA) gave up 16 earned runs and secured his ticket out of town.

                        A Triple-A Columbus, the 25-year-old was 1-3 with a 3.55 ERA in five starts.

                        Ryan Sadowski, San Francisco Giants

While the rest of the Giants starting staff could qualify for the “streaking” category, Sadowski has struggled as they look for one more reliable starter.

Sadowski (2-3, 4.81 ERA) win his first two starts but has lost his past three in ugly fashion. The 27-year-old righty gave up eight earned runs to the Atlanta Braves, and followed it up with a loss to the Colorado Rockies in which he was yanked early after spotting them three runs. He has failed to make it past the fourth inning in each of his past two starts.

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
