    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, July 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Tiger Woods hits the links in the Buick Open, the Red Sox play host to the A's, and the Phillies begin a series in San Francisco.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Jon Lester (9-7, 3.79 ERA) will try to pitch the Red Sox to a win over the Athletics on Thursday afternoon in a light day around the American League; Boston is 8-2 in the lefthander's last 10 trips to the mound. Lester's opponent in that contest will be lefthander Gio Gonzalez (2-2, 7.75 ERA), who beat the Yankees last time out. There are just three other games on the AL slate for Thursday, with Kansas City at Baltimore, Seattle at Texas and then finally the Yankees at the White Sox.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Rodrigo Lopez (3-0, 3.09 ERA) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (3-9, 4.92 ERA) on Thursday night as the Phillies begin a series in San Francisco. Righthander Lopez has given up just eight earned runs over his 23 1-3 innings of work so far this season, and Philadelphia is 4-0 in his four starts. Lefthander Sanchez has put up middling results since pitching a no-hitter back on July 10, allowing eight earned runs over his last 11 innings of work. The Giants lost his last two outings.

Also on the National League schedule for Thursday: Colorado at the Mets, San Diego at Cincinnati, Washington at Milwaukee, Houston at the Cubs, Atlanta at Florida, and the Dodgers at St. Louis. Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.57 ERA) gets the ball for Los Angeles in that matchup; righthander Kuroda hasn't won since July 3, but the Dodgers are 3-0 in his last three starts. The Cards counter with righthander Kyle Lohse (4-6, 4.35 ERA); St. Louis has won just two of Lohse's last 10 outings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour returns to the United States on Thursday for the opening round of the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Tiger Woods is pegged as the even-money Vegas favorite to get the win at the tournament despite his poor showing at the British Open two weeks ago. His biggest competitor, Jim Furyk, sits second on the list at 10/1 odds to grab the victory. Justin Leonard, Brian Gay, and Nick Watney trail those two at 20/1 odds.

The Canadian Football League begins its fifth week on Thursday night with Montreal at Edmonton. The Alouettes remain perfect at 4-0 on the season (3-1 against-the-spread), and they're pegged as 6.5-point road favorites for Thursday's matchup. The Eskimos sit in a three-way tie atop the CFL's West Division with a 2-2 mark through their first four games - although they're only 1-3 ATS on the year. The oddsmakers have Thursday's total pegged at 54.5 points.

Finally, the WNBA offers up four games on Thursday, with San Antonio at Sacramento, Connecticut at Indiana, Washington at New York, and Phoenix at Atlanta. The Mercury got past Connecticut 95-80 last time out to move to 14-5 SU and ATS on the season; Cappie Pondexter exploded for 29 points in that contest. The Dream sit at 8-10 SU but a lucrative 11-5-2 ATS on the season after topping Detroit 98-95 last time out. Ivory Latta tossed in 22 points in that victory.

      Six-pack for Thursday

Because this is a full-service website, here are America's six best cities for singles, according to that singles' authority, Forbes Magazine.......

      6) Atlanta-- Cost of living is lower than most big cities; there are a lot of cultural activities and the weather is usually real good.

      5) Washington, DC-- Unemployment (6.2%) is lower than most of the country (nat'l average 9.1%). Good place for ambitious singles.

      4) Seattle-- If you don't mind 280 days of rain a year, the music scene is Seattle is excellent-- lot of coffee houses for singles to meet/mingle.

      3) Chicago-- Third-biggest metro area in country; if you don't mind a harsh winter, there are lots of arts/music events all summer long.

      2) Boston-- 40+ colleges means there are ton of young people around; lot of wine bars, pubs, as well as Cape Cod just down the road.

      1) New York City-- 3,800 bars, 734 museums are good place to hang out in a sleepless city where 28% of the population is single.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) I've said this before but was reminded of this again last week, that in Albany, we're lucky to be close to many big cities (NYC, Boston, Philly and Montreal all within four hours), plus there's lot of good places to eat here. But if you like sports, good food, nice people and attractive ladies, there is no better spot in the northeast than Graney's Irish Bar and Grill on New Scotland Ave. in Albany.

      12) If you don't believe me, read this article and scroll near the bottom.

      11) Gas prices are $2.69 a gallon, after being $2.82 most of June, then down to $2.72 around July 4th. Last July, gas was $4.33 a gallon for a while, so while $2.69 seems high, it’s a lot better than last year was.

      10) They have 10-cent superfecta betting now, where you can pick the first four winners in a horse race-- seems like you can get lot of action for not so much money. I'll have to ask one of my racing guys about it.

      9) Speaking of which, don't forget to check out the college football page on this site for our three handicappers' daily selections during six-week long Saratoga Thoroughbred meeting. DDLohaus got off to a good start on Wednesday, doubling his $50 investment for Day 1.

      8) #125 on the PGA Tour money list is Chris Dimarco, with $453,144 in earnings this year. So far in 2009, 56 golfers have earned $1M+.

      7) Jonathan Broxton blew his first save since May 14 in Philly.

      6) How did the Phillies land Cliff Lee without giving up either Drabek or Happ? Is anyone in Cleveland paying attention? Now, Victor Martinez is likely to be traded. Home games by Lake Erie should be lot of fun in the last two months of the season.

      5) We rip the Pirates a lot here, but can't kill them too much for dumping Wilson/Sanchez Wednesday; both players had turned down extensions, so they were going to bolt, and Alderson is a legit pitching prospect they need. Sad to say, the only major leaguer they got from Seattle is in 0-24 slump, and Clement is a DH-type headed to the NL, but after all, these are the Pirates, so what did you expect?

      4) Think Ian Snell could be a steal for Seattle-- he burned bridges with the Pirates with his attitude, but he was dominant in AAA after he was sent down, so a reprieve and a new city should be a boost to his career.

      3) Its cool how many people wear red to Cardinal home games.

      2) Dodgers, Redbirds played an awesome game Wednesday, going extra innings with Cardinals finally winning in 15th on a Pujols single. There is no way Dodgers pitch to Albert with men on 1st and 2nd, two out if not for Holliday standing in the ondeck circle.

Rasmus, Ethier both made diving catches to save runs from scoring in extra frames, and Ludwich threw Manny out from rightfield to end the top of 12th, after Ramirez had robbed Ryan of a homer with a leaping catch in the 7th. Just a terrific ballgame.

      1) If you're headed to upstate New York for any reason, it would be a wise thing to bring an umbrella. And waterproof shoes.

        SCOREBOARD

        Thursday, July 30

L.A. Dodgers at St. Louis (8:15 p.m. EDT). Hiroki Kuroda matched a season high with nine strikeouts in his last start for the Dodgers. The Cardinals send Kyle Lohse to the mound in this match up of division leaders.

        STARS

        Wednesday

-Ken Griffey Jr., Mariners, doubled twice and drove in the decisive runs in the seventh inning, and Seattle beat the Blue Jays 3-2.

-Matt Cain, Giants, pitched nine scoreless innings for the Giants in a 1-0, 10-inning win over the Pirates.

-Josh Johnson, Marlins, hit a three-run homer and allowed three runs in six solid innings, lifting Florida to a 6-3 victory over the Braves.

-Joba Chamberlain, Yankees, pitched eight scoreless innings to lead New York to a 6-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

-Curtis Granderson and Justin Verlander, Tigers. Granderson led off the game with a home run and connected again in the second inning, and Verlander equaled a career high by striking out 13 as Detroit beat the Rangers 13-5.

-Randy Wells, Cubs, gave up six hits in eight, leading Chicago to a 12-0 victory over Houston.

-Justin Upton, Diamondbacks, homered and drove in three runs as Arizona defeated the Phillies 4-0.

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, lined an RBI single over the head of center fielder Matt Kemp with two outs in the 15th inning, giving St. Louis a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers.

        SWAP MEET

Looking for an ace to bolster their so-so rotation, Philadelphia acquired Cliff Lee from the Indians. The defending World Series champions also received outfielder Ben Francisco. The Indians got Triple-A pitcher Carlos Carrasco, infielder Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson along with Class-A pitcher Jason Knapp. ... The Giants acquired infielder Freddy Sanchez from Pittsburgh. The teams announced the trade right after the Giants beat Pittsburgh 1-0 in 10 innings. San Francisco sent minor league pitcher Tim Alderson to the Pirates. ... The Pirates also sent shortstop Jack Wilson and pitcher Ian Snell to Seattle for shortstop Ronny Cedeno, Triple-A catcher-first baseman Jeff Clement and three minor league pitchers in return.

        TAKE THAT

Tampa Bay's Matt Garza hit New York Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira with a fifth-inning pitch in a 6-2 loss, then said he did it because he's tired of opposing pitchers throwing at Rays All-Star Evan Longoria. "I hate to be that guy, but someone had to take a stand and say we're tired of it,'' Garza said.

        ALL PUTOUTS

Kansas City did not have an assist in a 7-3 loss to the Orioles. The last team to go a game without an assist was Tampa Bay on May 17, 2003, also in a loss - eight innings in the field - to Baltimore, according to STATS LLC. Only five teams in big league history have done it for at least nine innings. Cincinnati was the last, in 1997.

        CLOSE

Rookie Mat Latos and two relievers combined on a one-hitter and San Diego beat the Reds 7-1. Greg Burke and Mike Ekstrom both pitched one inning to complete the Padres' second one-hitter this year. Matos allowed only Jerry Hairston Jr.'s homer in the fourth inning.

        DEJA VU

The AL West-leading Angels beat Cleveland 9-3 and reached the 100-game mark with a 60-40 record, one win shy of last season at this stage. They have played better than .500 ball during the first 100 games in each of Mike Scioscia's 10 seasons as manager, reaching 60 wins three times.

        GOOD FIT

Alfonso Soriano, the Cubs' former leadoff hitter, has settled in nicely as Chicago's No. 6 hitter. Batting sixth exclusively the last 12 games, he has a .383 average with five homers and 15 RBIs, including Monday's 13th-inning grand slam. He hit a three-run homer in Chicago's 12-0 win over the Astros on Wednesday.

        BALKY BACK

Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt has received an injection to treat an irritated disk in his lower back and could have his next start pushed back. Oswalt left Tuesday night's game against the Chicago Cubs in the second inning with lower back discomfort. Officials hope he responds well to the injection and can make his scheduled start Sunday, but caution that it may have to be postponed depending on his progress.

        STATS

San Diego won two straight games for the first time since June 27-28. ... In 17 games since his return from a three-week demotion to Triple-A Salt Lake, Howie Kendrick is batting .383 (23 for 60) with 14 RBIs. ... Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer and had five RBIs in an 8-6 loss to Oakland. ... In the first innings of his 18 starts this season, Mike Hampton has allowed 24 runs - an ERA of 12.00, compared to 4.04 from the second inning on. He allowed six Wednesday in a 12-0 loss to the Cubs. ... Aarong Harang hasn't won since May 25, going 0-8 in 12 starts. It's the longest losing streak of his career and the longest by a Reds pitcher since Danny Graves lost eight straight decisions in 2003.

        SPEAKING

"Our offense is not such that we can come right back and score a lot of runs. He settled down, but it was too late. That's totally unacceptable. It's embarrassing. It's pitiful to watch. It's terrible. We've got to get after them. They're taking it to us right now. They're not a good club, and they're beating us, so what does that make us?'' - Manager Dusty Baker after the Reds were one-hit in a 7-1 loss to the Padres.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets (+112, 8.5)

The Mets have been a disapointment this season, but still have the best home record in the NL East.

New York is hitting a respectable .270 with a .345 on-base percentage at Citi Field this year. The team has struggled to generate power with a lineup decimated by injuries, but it still has rattled off 14 triples in its own park.

Meantime, the Rockies, who are hitting a meager .242 away from Coors Field, must contend with ace pitcher Johan Santana. The hurler has won three of his past four home starts, lasting at least seven innings each time.

Overall, the Mets have taken their past four at home, while the Rockies are just 3-3 on the road since the All-Star break. Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader should go to the home nine.

                  Pick: Mets

Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles (-148, 8.5)

You’ve met the Baltimore Orioles this season, but let me introduce you to the team you might not know. The team that is the best home hitting side in baseball.

Baltimore leads the majors with a .292 average at home, to go with 57 homers and 89 doubles this year and Camden Yards. The team’s pitching staff also takes a dramatic turn when the players are able to sleep in their own beds.

Oriole pitchers have a horrendous 4.92 ERA on the season, but that number drops to just 4.13 at home. Not that it matters to the Royals. Kansas City has scored 23 fewer runs on the road (153) than any other team in the majors.

                  Pick: Orioles

                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

                    Gavin Floyd (Chicago White Sox)

The 26-year-old right-hander appears to be hitting his stride at the right time for Chicago.

Floyd (8-6, 4.24 ERA) has struck out at least seven batters in each of his past three starts, proving the command that made him one of the best pitcher’s in the AL last season is returning. If he can cut down on his walks – 46, the 11th-most in the league – he will be back among the elite.

In his most recent start, he allowed only one earned run on six hits in 6 2-3 innings against the Tigers. Overall, he has yielded just four earned runs in the past 13 2-3 innings. He also has won four of his past five decisions.

"Outstanding," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said of Floyd to the Associated Press. "The last three or four starts he has been great.”

                    Javier Vasquez (Atlanta Braves)

Don’t let it fool you that Vasquez allowed four runs in his most recent start against the Brewers. He still managed to strike out nine against just three walks and went seven strong innings.

Vasquez (8-7, 2.98 ERA) has won each of his past three starts and the team is finally starting to give him the run support he's lacked.

The right-hander is second in the NL in strikeouts (150) and fourth in WHIP (walks + hits over innings pitched) at 1.07. Over the past 40 2-3 innings, he has allowed just nine earned runs and struck out 38.

                    Slumping

                    Derek Holland (Texas Rangers)

A move back into the starting rotation may not have been the best thing for the young lefty.

Holland (3-6, 6.13 ERA) has struggled to the point where Dustin Nippert is ready to take his spot in the rotation if he is unable to come up with at least a quality outing. In each of his past two starts, he has failed to make it out of the fifth inning.

In his most recent outing, a 6-3 loss to the Royals, he gave up four runs on seven hits in 4 2-3 innings. He also allowed a home run and walked two. He has allowed a home run in eight of his nine starts this season.

"It's frustrating, but also it's a learning process," Holland told reporters. "I'm only 22. These guys have been around and they know what to expect. I'm still learning.”

                    Kyle Lohse (St. Louis Cardinals)

After missing nearly all of June on the disabled list, Lohse was supposed to bolster the Cardinals rotation during the stretch run. Instead, he is helping to blow up the team's postseason hopes.

Lohse (4-6, 4.35) has given up 10 earned runs in his past 16 innings and picked up the loss in three of his past four starts. In his most recent outing, a 14-6 loss to the Phillies, he gave up three runs on four hits and three walks in just four innings.

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets [12:10 PM ET]

Rockies: The Rockies are looking to avoid a third consecutive loss for the first time since a four-game slide from May 31-June 3. Colorado’s offense has been sputtering offensively the last couple days, evidenced by the team's three total runs in the two losses to the Mets. Jason Hammel (5-5, 4.28) will get the call in Thursday’s makeup game in the hopes that he can win for the first time since a 4-2 victory at Oakland on June 26. The right-hander, who is getting his first start against the Mets, is 0-2 with a 4.45 ERA in his last five outings. However, he's received two runs or fewer of support in four of those starts, including one in each of the last two. Hammel got the start Friday after a blister caused Jason Marquis to be skipped in the rotation, and he allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings of a 3-1 loss to San Francisco. Hammel has been at his best on the road, going 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 10 appearances, eight of them starts.

The Rockies are 19-7 in their last 26 games as an underdog.

                          Key Injuries - None

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (-$1.40 O/U 7.5 under -$1.30): Despite the off-field distractions, New York extended its winning streak to four games by beating Colorado ace Jason Marquis on Tuesday, 4-0, one night after a 7-3 victory in the series opener. The Mets haven't won five straight since a season-high seven-game run May 4-10. Facing the Rockies appears to be helping. The Mets have won 20 of the last 22 meetings between these clubs in New York, including each of the last five. Johan Santana (11-8, 3.12 ERA), who has never faced Colorado, is looking to rebound from a sub-par performance by continuing his outstanding success at Citi Field. The two-time Cy Young Award winner is 7-2 with a 1.86 ERA in 10 starts at the Mets' new home. He wasn't close to that effectiveness in last Friday's 5-4 loss at Houston, getting tagged for five runs and 12 hits before getting pulled with two outs in the sixth. That outing came after he won his previous two games - both at home - by allowing 10 hits in 14 scoreless innings. Santana has not faced Colorado this season.

The Under is 7-1-1 in the Mets’ last nine meetings with the Rockies.

Key Injuries - Jeff Francoeur (hand) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Phoenix Mercury at Atlanta Dream (+1.5, 188)

Cappie Pondexter is making everyone forget about teammate Diana Taurasi.

The guard dropped a career-high 29 points in a 95-80 win over Connecticut on Tuesday, draining 12-of-18 shots. The win improved the Mercury to 6-0 against the Eastern Conference this season. The performance by Pondexter was especially big for Taurasi (17 points), who still is finding her rhythm after returning from a two-game suspension.

"I didn't have the best offensive outing the last game, so I just wanted to come out focused and give my team some energy today," Pondexter said. "We're very focused on this road trip. We want to start the second half off right, and these games are very important."

Atlanta is 5-3 straight up at home this season, but has won just four of its past 10 overall and is allowing nearly 82 points per game.

                            Pick: Mercury

Connecticut Sun at Indiana Fever (-4.5, 143.5)

Do the Sun have the Fever’s number?

Indiana easily handled Connecticut to the tune of a 14-point win earlier this year, but the Sun stunned the entire league by posting a 67-61 win over the Fever to snap their franchise-record 11-game win streak.

In the win, the Sun were paced by Lindsay Whalen, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists. But the Sun needed every ounce of Whalen’s effort, thanks to her team's season-high 26 turnovers.

"The fact that they got 50 percent of their points off our turnovers is incredible," Sun coach Mike Thibault said after the game. "We lead the league in fewest turnovers, but on nights we have them, we throw them around. We should start autographing them for the people in the stands. It's terrible."

Look for the Fever to make the most of the Sun’s errors this time, and the final result to look much more like the team’s first meeting
