    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, July 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Two of the American League's top pitchers take the mound on the road, while the Rockies try to knock around the Mets' ace.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Zack Greinke (10-6, 2.04 ERA) will try to edge his ERA back under 2.00 on Wednesday night when he takes to the mound in Baltimore against the Orioles and Chris Tillman (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Kansas City is 0-4 in Greinke's last four trips to the mound, but the righthander has surrendered just seven earned runs over 26 innings pitched in those outings. Righthander Tillman will be making his Major League debut for the Orioles; he was 8-6 with a 2.70 ERA with Triple-A Norfolk.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: Cleveland at the Angels, the Yankees at Tampa Bay, Oakland at Boston, Detroit at Texas, the White Sox at Minnesota, and Toronto at Seattle. Barring a trade, the Blue Jays will send ace Roy Halladay (11-3, 2.62 ERA) to the hill in that contest; righthander Halladay took a no-decision vs. the Rays last time out, giving up one earned run over nine innings of work. The Mariners counter with Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-1, 3.48 ERA).

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.96 ERA) will match up against Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.95 ERA) on Wednesday night as the Dodgers continue their series against the Cardinals. Lefthander Kershaw, also the subject of trade rumors, was stuck with a no-decision against the Marlins last time out despite giving up just two earned runs over six innings. Righthander Pineiro has won each of his last three starts for the Cardinals, giving up just two earned runs over those 22 innings of work.

Making up the rest of the National League slate for Wednesday: Houston at the Cubs, Pittsburgh at San Francisco, San Diego at Cincinnati, Atlanta at Florida, Washington at Milwaukee, Philadelphia at Arizona, and Colorado at the Mets. Jason Hammel (5-5, 4.28 ERA) will get the ball for the Rockies in that last matchup, while New York will counter with Johan Santana (11-8, 3.12 ERA). Santana lost to the Astros last time out, surrendering five runs over 6 2-3 innings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there's just one game on the WNBA schedule for Wednesday, with Los Angeles at Chicago. The Sky have been the least lucrative team in the league so far this season, going 5-13 against-the-spread (8-10 straight-up) through their first 18 games. However, Chicago has paid off for OVER bettors, as they sit at 13-5 OU on the season. The Sky fell 75-64 to Washington last time out, with Jia Perkins scoring a team-high 14 points and Candice Dupree tossing in 10 points.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- First of all, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Eagles and the family of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, who died Tuesday at age 68. Life is short, and age 68 is way too young to go.

-- Clemson basketball coach Oliver Purnell donated $100,000 to cancer research last year.

-- Angel pitchers threw 155 pitches Monday night; 15 were called strikes. Cleveland hitters got 20 hits on 39 balls they put in play. If Angels are going to do anything in October, they need pitching help.

-- Pinch-hitter Ross Gload hit a walk-off, 2-run tater in the 9th inning, giving Florida Marlins a 4-3 win over the Braves in south Florida.

-- Mark Buehrle threw five more perfect innings, set big league record by retiring 45 straight batters, before Minnesota got to him late, but a terrific stretch of pitching by the crafty lefthander.

-- Good to see A's manager Bob Geren show some fire Tuesday and get tossed for backing his pitcher, who was getting squeezed bigtime by home plate umpire Adrian Johnson. Suddenly spunky A's won 9-8 in 11 innings, getting 21 hits (five by Adam Kennedy).

Wednesday's List of 13: 13 things I'm looking for in next 3 months

Not that I'm counting, but there are 77 days until my Las Vegas trip, or 11 weeks. Here are 13 things I'm looking for in those 11 weeks.....

      13) What team is going to sign Michael Vick and what kind of shape is he in? What happens if none of the 32 NFL teams want him?

      12) I want to see Brett Wallace play third base for the A's. You trade Matt Holliday for a top prospect, I want to see the top prospect play.

      11) Where will Lamar Odom sign? If he goes to Miami, its been a lousy offseason for the champ Lakers, who also lost Trevor Ariza.

      10) I want to keep watching to see if speed is now the most important part of baseball in the post-steroids era.

      9) I want to see if Brett Favre becomes invisible. One can hope.

      8) Can the Mets regroup and contend? If some of their injured players ever get healthy, they could make September interesting, and also make Omar Minaya's life a lot less stressful.

      7) Will Jerry Jones sell out his ridiculously expensive new stadium?

      6) Can't wait to see minor league hockey in Glens Falls in October; the Glens Falls Civic Center is a great building-- remember a playoff game we went to in 1986-- game went triple OT, Adirondack Red Wings and Hershey Bears-- started at 7:30, ended at 12:40am. Concessions stands ran out of food-- we stood the whole game. A tremendous night.

      5) Looking to see which rookie head coaches will try to win exhibition games-- one nitwit (think Dennis Green) always goes all out, wins his preseason games by 20-30 points, and creates unrealistic expectations.

      4) I'm looking to see how many PGA tournaments have new sponsors in 2010-- the economy will hit golf, tennis harder than most sports.

      3) I'm anxious to watch the Tennessee Vols this fall, and see how Lane Kiffin reacts when his Vols are getting bounced all over the southeast in October-- his mouth has written checks his team can't back.

      2) I'm waiting for an over/under on games before Terrell Owens throws his QB under the bus-- I'm guessing 3.5 or 4.5. Going to be a long year for poor Trent Edwards, especially when the weather turns ugly.

      1) I'm most anxious to see the new-look Rams, who have a new coach, new front office, new team photographer and new janitors at its practice facility (seriously). All we need now are about 20 new players.

        SCOREBOARD

        Wednesday, July 29

Toronto at Seattle (4:40 p.m. EDT). With trade rumors swirling, Roy Halladay (11-3) is scheduled to start for the Blue Jays against Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-1) and the Mariners.

        STARS

        Tuesday

-Gary Matthews Jr., Angels, hit a tiebreaking three-run double in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles rallied for a 7-6 over the Indians.

-Cole Hamels, Phillies, pitched eight dominant innings giving up one run and four hits as Philadelphia beat Arizona 4-3.

-Ian Kinsler, Rangers, drove in three runs and Texas beat Detroit 7-3.

-Ross Gload, Marlins, hit a pinch-hit two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth to rally Florida over Atlanta 4-3.

-Rajai Davis, Athletics, singled home Mark Ellis in the ninth to send the game into extra innings, then did it again in the 11th and Oakland beat the Red Sox 9-8.

-Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners, had the first game-ending hit of his career with two outs in the ninth, and Seattle snapped a four-game skid with a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays.

-Adam Wainwright, Cardinals, pitched eight shutout innings to lift St. Louis to a 10-0 win over Los Angeles.

        PERFECT RECORD

Chicago White Sox ace Mark Buehrle set a major league record by retiring 45 straight batters Tuesday night. Coming off a perfect game in his last start against Tampa Bay, Buehrle retired the first 17 Twins batters to surpass the record of 41 straight set by and San Francisco's Jim Barr in 1972 and tied by teammate Bobby Jenks, a reliever, in 2007. The streak ended with two outs in the sixth and Minnesota went on to win 5-3.

        OUTFIELD EXCHANGE

In a swap of outfielders, the Boston Red Sox traded Mark Kotsay and cash to the Chicago White Sox for Brian Anderson. Kotsay hit .257 with one home run and five RBIs in 27 games for the Red Sox this year. He started out the season on the disabled list while recovering from back surgery. Anderson was hitting .238 with two homers and 13 RBIs when the White Sox sent him down to Triple-A Charlotte.

        SIDELINED UNIT

Randy Johnson has a torn rotator cuff and won't be able to throw for the San Francisco Giants for at least three weeks. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said the 303-game winner had an MRI on his injured left shoulder Monday and the test showed some tearing. The 45-year-old Johnson is 8-6 with a 4.81 ERA with the Giants this season but hasn't played since injuring himself while batting during a 7-1 loss to Houston on July 5.

        SEASON-ENDER

Yankees starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his injured right shoulder Wednesday. Wang is just 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA in 12 games this season, after missing time from April 19 to May 21 with a hip injury.

        ONLY ONE NO. 14

Jim Rice's No. 14 is up on the facade at Fenway Park along with the team's other Hall of Fame greats. Rice was inducted into the Cooperstown, N.Y., shrine over the weekend, and on Tuesday night the Red Sox retired his number. Rice walked in from left field, where a giant "14'' was mowed into the grass. Rice played parts of 16 seasons for the Red Sox, batting .298 with 382 homers.

        IS SOMEONE WATCHING OVER THEM?

The Los Angeles Angels survived another meltdown by All-Star closer Brian Fuentes for their major league-leading 33rd comeback victory, 7-6 over the Indians. Fuentes, the major league leader with 30 saves, fell apart for the second straight night, giving up two runs and failing to close out the scrappy Indians.

        SICK

The Houston Astros placed reliever LaTroy Hawkins on the 15-day disabled list because of shingles in his back. Hawkins last pitched in Monday night's 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs and was ejected by home plate umpire Mike Everitt in the eighth inning for arguing balls and strikes. He was ejected after Everitt called his second pitch to Aramis Ramirez a ball. Hawkins is 1-4 with a 2.32 ERA. He has 10 saves in 13 opportunities.

        TWO IN A ROW

The Royals' second straight win over the Orioles, 4-3, to open the series gave them their first winning streak since a three-game run on July 4-6.

        STATS

The Yankees' CC Sabathia fanned Carl Crawford in the fifth inning for his 1,500th career strikeout in a 6-2 loss to the Rays. ... Seattle's Ronny Cedeno is mired in an 0-for-24 slump. ... Arizona starter Dan Haren has a career ERA of 4.10 after All-Star break - more than a run higher than his 3.08 ERA in the first half of the season. Haren has lasted only five innings in each of his first two starts since the break - his two shortest outings. ... The Rockies still haven't figured out how to win in New York, where they have lost four straight to the Mets and 20 of 22 overall.

        SPEAKING

"It's just one of those things where you kind of appreciate and sit back and realize how hard it is to throw a no-hitter or a perfect game. Because you see today that I made some good pitches and they put them in play and got base hits off them. It's just frustrating.'' -The White Sox's Mark Buehrle after he threw 5 2-3 perfect innings one start after he became the 18th pitcher to throw a perfect game and went on to lose 5-3.

          This Day in Baseball

On July 29 in Baseball History...

1900 - With all the National League teams in the east, and no Sunday games allowed, one-hundred players gather in New York. Their demands are: release of players who are not going to be used rather than farming them out, and players to share in the purchase price when they are sold.

1908 - Rube Waddell struck out sixteen as the St. Louis Browns beat the Philadelphia A's 5-4.

1909 - National League president Harry Pulliam, despondent over his inability to handle the problems and controversies of the league, dies of a self-inflicted pistol wound.

1911 - Joe Wood of the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Browns with a 5-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader. Wood fanned twelve and allowed three baserunners.

1915 - At 41, Honus Wagner becomes the oldest player in this century to hit a grand slam. It is inside the park against Jeff Pfeffer of Brooklyn in an 8-2 win. The record will stand until Tony Perez hits a grand slam on May 13, 1985, one day short of his 43rd birthday.

1921 - As part of Cleveland's 125th anniversary celebration, Cy Young, 54, makes a two-inning appearance on the mound at Old-Timers' Day. Chief Zimmer, 60, is his catcher.

1928 - The Cleveland Indians scored eight runs in the first inning and nine more in the second and went on to beat the New York Yankees 24-6 at Dunn Field.

1955 - Smoky Burgess of the Cincinnati Reds hit three home runs and drove in nine runs in a 16-5 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Crosley Field.

1978 - A surprise announcement at Old-Timers Day in Yankee Stadium: Billy Martin will return to manage the Yanks in 1980. The fans go wild with joy.

1983 - Steve Garvey's consecutive-game streak ends at 1,207 when he dislocates his left thumb in a home-plate collision with Braves pitcher Pascual Perez. The injury keeps him from playing the second game of the doubleheader.

1996 - Tom Lasorda calls it quits after twenty seasons as manager of the Dodgers following a heart attack and an angioplasty procedure in June. Bill Russell takes over for the man who won two World Series, four National League pennants and seven division titles.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (+112, 8.5)

No team plays below the total more than the Detroit Tigers - except the Texas Rangers.

The total has been under in Detroit's last seven games, during which the Tigers are averaging 2.6 runs. Longer trends include 15 of the last 17 and 21 of the last 25.

Overall, the under is 61-35-2 in Detroit's games this season. That is the second-best mark, trailing only the 61-32-4 in games involving Texas.

Texas is averaging 3.6 runs in its last 12 games, and the under is 11-0-1 in that stretch. Since June 5, Rangers games have a 33-10-1 mark against the under.
The mound matchup of Justin Verlander and Scott Feldman pits starters who have not given up more than three earned runs since July 1.

                Pick: Under

Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners (+165, 7.5)

One way or another, the Roy Halladay trade talk will be over by the weekend. For the Toronto Blue Jays, it can't end soon enough.

Since GM J.P. Ricciardi admitted he would listen to offers for Halladay on July 7, the Blue Jays have been in a funk, losing 10 of their last 16 games with three three-game slides.

During that span, Toronto is averaging 4.4 runs, but 39 of its 71 runs have come in four games. It has been held to three runs or less nine times and is 0-6 in one-run games.

Even the normally unflappable Halladay appears to have been affected. He has not pitched poorly, but is 1-1 in three starts since Ricciardi's declaration and again will be making another potential "last start for the Blue Jays."

Toronto is just 1-5 in Halladay's last six outings.

                Pick: Seattle

                  Wednesday, July 29

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants)

In July, batters almost have been better off trying to work Cain for a walk rather than figuring out how to hit him.

The righthander has made five starts this month. Over 29 1-3 innings, he has given up just 20 hits and 11 walks.

“He’s really emerged, I think, as a terrific pitcher,” Giants manager Bruchy Bochy told the team’s web site. “He’s not trying to power his way through guys and he has great poise out there.”

Cain is 3-0 in his last five starts, allowing no more than one earned run in any of them. He also appears to be unaffected by the line drive he took off his elbow vs. San Diego on July 11.

                  John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels)

It has been a trying season for the veteran righthander, who spent the first six weeks on the disabled list and the next six trying to develop some consistency. He finally appears to have found it.

Lackey has won three straight starts for the first time in nearly a year, compiling a 1.52 ERA while beating CC Sabathia, red-hot Brett Anderson and Francisco Liriano.

The Angels have won five of Lackey's last six starts.

                  Debuting

                  Chris Tillman (Baltimore Orioles)

Tillman will be making his major league debut against the Kansas City Royals. The 21-year-old righthander also will be auditioning for the role of Baltimore’s fifth starter because Rich Hill and Jason Berken have pitched poorly of late.

Originally a 2006 second-round pick of Seattle, Hillman was acquired in the Erik Bedard trade, a heist that also included All-Star Adam Jones and closer George Sherrill. He was 11-4 with a 3.18 ERA for Double-A Bowie in 2008 and 8-6 with a 2.70 ERA for Triple-A Norfolk this year.

In the minors, Tillman was a strikeout pitcher, having rung up 253 in 232 1-3 innings since the start of the 2008 season. He has averaged better than a strikeout per inning at every stop in the minors.

                  Slumping

                  Aaron Harang (Cincinnati Reds)

The righthander has lost his last three starts, giving up 12 earned runs and 24 hits in 16 innings for a 6.75 ERA. He also has a 1.75 WHIP during that span.

But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Harang is winless in his last 11 starts since May 25, allowing 12 homers in 62 2-3 innings. He began the season by surrendering just seven homers in 64 1-3 innings.

                  Zack Greinke (Kansas City Royals)

If Greinke doesn’t win the AL Cy Young Award, he can lay the blame squarely on his teammates, who seem to lay down when he takes the mound and offer him little support.

Greinke has not pitched poorly in his last four starts. In fact, he has pitched rather well, allowing seven earned runs with 32 strikeouts in 26 innings. But the Royals have lost all four outings, and Greinke is 0-3 with a no-decision because he has received just three runs of support.

Under bettors have cashed in Greinke’s last six starts.

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: New York has split the first two games of this three-game series against Tampa Bay and is now 5-5 against the Rays this season. Tuesday’s 6-2 loss saw New York’s road record dip to 26-22. Joba Chamberlain (6-2, 3.86 ERA) looks for his third straight victory and hopes to remain undefeated in his past six starts when he takes the mound in Wednesday’s finale. Chamberlain beat the A's on July 24 in New York with seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball, walking three and striking out six. He faced the Rays and Matt Garza on June 7 and took a no-decision, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings during the Yankees' 4-3 win as a $1.35 home favorite. The combined seven runs ducked Under the 9 ½-run closing total. The Yanks are 13-6 in Chamberlain’s first 19 starts this season, with the Over going 11-7-2.

The Yanks are 40-27 against right-handed starters.

                          Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Rays (-$1.10 O/U 9): After losing last week to Chicago's Mark Buehrle, who hurled a perfect game, Scott Kazmir was strong enough to win for the first time in eight starts Tuesday by tossing seven-plus innings, allowing the Yanks one run on five hits with four strikeouts en route to a 6-2 win. The victory lifted Tampa Bay’s record at Tropicana Field to 31-16. Matt Garza (7-7, 3.68) will be on the hill in Wednesday's rubber game. Garza matched up with Roy Halladay in his last start and came away with his seventh win of the season after allowing just two runs in nine innings. The 25-year-old right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA in seven career appearances against the Yankees. However, Garza is 11-6 with a 3.09 ERA in 25 career starts at Tropicana Field. The Under is 14-5-1 in Garza’s first 20 starts this season.

The Under is 13-3-1 in Garza’s last 17 starts.

                          Key Injuries - None

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Tigers (-$1.20, O/U 8.5): Detroit lost its seventh straight road game Tuesday by dropping a 7-3 decision at Texas. The setback saw the Tigers’ road record slip to 21-31 compared to 31-16 at home. Jim Leyland’s troops have now scored three runs or less in each of their last eight losses. The Tigers will try to salvage one game of this three-game series by sending ace right-hander Justin Verlander (11-5, 3.12 ERA) to the mound. Verlander is among the AL leaders in wins, despite some of the low-scoring no-decisions and losses he has taken over the past month. The Tigers gave him an early lead in his last start, and he went the distance with it for a complete-game six hitter, having allowed a lone unearned run. But the road presents a particular test for Verlander, who owns a 4-5 record and 4.76 ERA away from Comerica Park compared with 7-0 and 1.15 at home. Verlander has faced the Rangers once this season (April 11) and was not involved in the decision after allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. The Tigers eventually won as $1.65 home favorites, 4-3.

The Under is 21-7-1 in Detroit’s last 29 road games.

                          Key Injuries - None

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rangers: Texas will go for the sweep of this three-game series by sending ace right-hander Scott Feldman (9-3, 3.39 ERA) to the mound. The Rangers are a nifty 12-5 in Feldman’s first 17 starts, with the Under going 13-4. Feldman pitched eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Royals on Friday, his longest outing in 42 career starts. Feldman is now 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA in his last six starts. He is 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 11 games, including nine starts, at home this season. Feldman has a 6.43 ERA in five relief appearances and one start against the Tigers during his career. The Rangers are now 34-19 through their first 53 home dates.

Texas is 8-1 in its last nine overall outings.

                          Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Is Candace Parker ready to be Candace Parker?

The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year and MVP has had a tough time regaining her form. She began the season on the sidelines, recovering from giving birth to her first child. In five games since her return, she is averaging just 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Parker may be turning a corner, however. In her last game before the All-Star break, she had her first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, adding six blocks and five assists in 48 minutes - all season highs - of an overtime loss at Seattle.

She also did not play in the All-Star Game, allowing her a couple of days to catch her breath and regroup for the second half.

Last year against Chicago, Parker averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks as Los Angeles swept the two-game series.

                            Pick: Los Angeles
