    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, July 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox send their ace to take on the Twins, the Yankees meet up with the Rays, and the Dodgers battle the Cardinals.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Mark Buehrle (11-3, 3.28 ERA) will try to follow up his perfect game with another strong outing on Tuesday night when his White Sox play on the road against the Twins and Scott Baker (8-7, 5.04 ERA). Lefthander Buehrle has picked up the win in five of his last seven trips to the mound, and has only lost once in his past nine outings. Righthander Baker had to settle for a no-decision in his start against the Angels last week despite allowing just two runs over his five innings.

Also on the American League schedule for Tuesday: Kansas City at Baltimore, Oakland at Boston, Detroit at Texas, Cleveland at the Angels, Toronto at Seattle, and the Yankees at Tampa Bay. CC Sabathia (10-6, 3.67 ERA) will get the ball for New York in that contest; the lefthander beat the Athletics in his last outing, surrendering three earned runs over seven innings. Scott Kazmir (4-6, 6.69 ERA) will be trying to win for the first time since May 9 when he pitches for Tampa Bay.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Chad Billingsley (10-5, 3.72 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (11-6, 2.95 ERA) on Tuesday night when the Dodgers continue their series in St. Louis. Righthander Billingsley finally got back into the win column last time out, holding the Reds to two earned runs on seven hits over six innings of work; that was his first win since June 14. Righthander Wainwright is coming off an easy win over the Nationals in which he surrendered only one earned run over his six innings.

Making up the rest of the National League slate for Tuesday: San Diego at Cincinnati, Atlanta at Florida, Colorado at the Mets, Houston at the Cubs, Washington at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at Arizona. The Phillies will send Cole Hamels (6-5, 4.66 ERA) to the mound in that contest; Philadelphia has won each of the lefthander's last four outings. Dan Haren (10-5, 2.14 ERA) will counter for the D-Backs; Haren last lost on June 24.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The WNBA returns to action on Tuesday with four games on the schedule: Washington at Indiana, Seattle at San Antonio, Phoenix at Connecticut, and Los Angeles at Minnesota. The Sparks will be looking to end a three-game losing skid in that contest; Los Angeles fell 98-87 to Seattle last time out and sit at 4-9 straight-up and 5-8 against-the-spread on the season. The Lynx, who are coming off a 99-86 win over Phoenix, are 10-7 SU and 10-7 ATS through their 17 games.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Sizing up the Big 12 North this season.......

-- Nebraska-- Its been seven years since Huskers beat a team ranked higher than 20th in country; they're 5-11 as a road dog since 2002, but they were 9-4 LY despite being -11 in turnovers.

-- Colorado-- Just 2-12 on road in three years under Hawkins, who is on hot seat in year where his son starts his third year as starting QB. Covered four of last 14 as road dog; have 9 starters back on offense.

-- Kansas State-- Snyder was 136-68 in Little Apple; returns after his three-year absence; has to break in new QB, but has eight starters back on defense. Dog covered nine of their last eleven road games.

-- Kansas-- Has quality senior QB, but defense was bad LY (allowed 28.8 ppg, 397 ypg). Jayhawks will start two freshmen and sophomore on OL-- they're 16-6 as home favorite under Mangino.

-- Missouri-- Very young at QB, OL (three sophs start on off. line); they've won three of last four bowl games, scoring 38-38-38-30 pts, but they lost seven defensive starters, so they're retooling in 2009.

-- Iowa State-- Nine starters back on offense (QB has 18 starts), plus a chip on shoulder after Chizik bolted Ames after going 5-19 in 2 years. Rhoads hired quality coordinators, Cyclones should be better in '09.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day.....

      13) Unusual amount of news for a Monday; Mets fired assistant GM Tony Bernazard for various bizarre incidents; in process of announcing the firing, GM Omar Minaya accused a Daily News reporter of trying to get a job in Mets' player development department, which would be a huge no-no for any reporter. Very strange day in Queens, but.......

      12) ...... the Mets won third straight game for first time in two months, moving within 6.5 games of the Wild Card lead, so as long as they keep winning, no one will care about Omar or the reporter/personnel guru.

      11) Judging by the way the Mets' injuries have gone this season, maybe the reporter should have tried to get a job as a trainer with the Mets.

      10) As a New York taxpayer, I'd prefer my tax dollars didn't go toward paying for the incarceration of Plaxico Burress, who the outgoing DA in New York City wants to put away for two years-- the damn fool shot himself in the leg, he wasn't committing a crime (other than possessing a firearm), fine him $10 mill and lets get on with our lives. The state could use the money, believe me. Putting him in jail would be a political act, a last blaze of glory for a DA who had the job for 34 freakin' years.

      9) Michael Vick got reinstated, kind of; now all he needs is a team that needs a backup QB who was 31st in NFL in completion percentage and 20th in passer rating in 2006, the last season he played. He also ran for 1,000+ yards that season, but what kind of shape is he in now, after a couple of years in the big house? This will be very interesting to follow.

      8) Then there's Pete Rose, who may be reinstated to baseball soon, but if he thinks the Veterans' Committee is going to elect him to the Hall, I'd disagree with him. I only live 80 miles from Cooperstown, I love going there, but have pretty much boycotted the place because of the hideous way Rose has been shunned. The guy has the most hits in the history of baseball, he belongs in the Hall of Fame.

      7) If I owned the Minnesota Vikings, I'd call a news conference and then apologize to Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson, the Vikings' QBs; then I'd announce to the world that the Vikings won't be needing Brett Favre's services this season. Enough already; the guy obviously isn't in it with both feet, so who the hell needs him??????

      6) Weird college football scheduling: Halloween in San Antonio, Notre Dame against Washington State. Get a map, plot San Antonio, Pullman, WA and South Bend, IN. None of the three are close to each other.

      5) Tampa Rays' bullpen is 19-9; their starting pitchers are 35-37.

      4) Zach Greinke is 0-3, 3.12 in his last four starts; Royals scored a total of three runs in those four games.

      3) Angels had three consecutive homers (Rivera-Morales-Napoli) in the second inning, but Cleveland scored four times in ninth and won again, this time 8-6 in Anaheim. Tribe has now won six of last seven games.

      2) Tim Lincecum struck out 15 Pirates in his 4-2 win late Monday.

      1) Josh Willingham is first big leaguer since Bill Mueller in 2003 to hit a pair of grand slams in same game, as Nationals drilled Brewers, 14-6.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants (-135)

No sooner did the ink dry on his mega-contract, than the magic seemed to fall out of Barry Zito’s curveball.

A record of 27-40 and a spot at the end of the rotation surely wasn’t what the Giants had in mind when they signed the left-hander to a nine-figure deal after Zito became a perennial All-Star for the Bay Area rival Oakland A’s.

Though you wouldn’t expect light-hitting Pittsburgh to be among the opponents to stymie Zito (6-10, 4.68 ERA), the Pirates have done just that. He has lost three straight starts against Pittsburgh, despite giving up just seven earned runs in those starts. He gave up just two runs July 18 in Pittsburgh, but still ended up tagged with the loss.

Although there is nothing in his performance to indicate he is on a downward swing, you have to worry about Zito’s confidence. His body language in recent losses suggests the mounting close calls are taking a toll, and that’s never a good sign.

              Pick: Pirates

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels (-210)

The Indians just completed a bizarre, historic run in which they faced left-handed starters in nine straight games. Their recent offensive production probably has them wishing that the lefties would keep coming.

After a few tweaks of their lineup were made to adjust to the onslaught of southpaws, the Indians managed to score 31 runs in a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.

The adjustment back to right-handers won’t come easily, as Cleveland faces one of the league’s hottest starters in the Angels’ Jered Weaver (10-3, 3.50 ERA). Weaver should have enough to slow down Cleveland’s buzzsaw.

              Pick: Angels

                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox

While the perfect game in his last outing gave Mark Buehrle some overdue national recognition, the perennial ace of the Chicago White Sox staff makes a living off of his consistency.

Buehrle (11-3, 3.28) might not scare batters with overpowering stuff, and his numbers don’t always jump off the page. But when it comes to getting guys out and giving his team a chance to win the game, there are few better in the majors.

The reliable lefty is 5-1 with one no-decision in his past seven starts. In this span, he has given up more than three earned runs just once, and his perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays is among his two shutouts in this span. His previous outing was an eight-inning effort in which he allowed one run against the Baltimore Orioles in another victory.

                Roy Oswalt, Houston Astros

Houston’s high-profile hurler doesn’t appear to have much for his efforts this season, but his recent numbers suggest Oswalt (6-4, 3.66 ERA) has been doing some of his best work of late.

The 31-year-old righty has posted a record of 3-0 with three no-decisions in his past six starts. He has gone at least six innings and given up three or fewer earned runs in each of these starts.

Overall, the two-time 20-game winner has yielded just 10 earned runs in his past six starts, and has struck out 37 batters while walking seven.

                Slumping

                Vin Mazzaro, Oakland A’s

Mazzaro was put in the difficult position of trying to help plug leaks in a patchwork rotation for what quickly became another lost season for the Oakland A’s. The 22-year-old right-hander is learning the hard way.

After winning his first two starts with shutout performances over the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, Mazarro (2-7, 4.75 ERA) has gone 0-7 with one no-decision in his past eight starts.

His last two efforts have been far from encouraging; he gave up 14 total runs to the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees while failing to get past the fourth inning in either blowout loss.

                Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds

Although Arroyo leads the Reds with 10 wins, his inconsistency can be maddening for those who back this club.

Sandwiched around a two-win, 16-inning scoreless streak are four ugly losses in which Arroyo (10-9, 5.21 ERA) gave up at least five earned runs and lasted past the fifth inning just twice.

His last outing resulted in a five-inning losing effort against the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he gave up five earned runs.

                  Monday

-Josh Beckett, Red Sox, became the American League's first 12-game winner, allowing three runs and eight hits in seven innings as Boston beat Oakland 8-3.

-Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, hit a game-winning grand slam in the 13th inning to lead Chicago past Houston 5-1.

                  STATS & STREAKS

Beginning a stretch in which they'll play 19 of 26 on the road, the New York Yankees beat Tampa Bay 11-4 on Monday night and showed no signs of a letdown following the club's best homestand (9-1) since June 2004. They've won 23 of their last 29, climbing a season-best 23 games over .500. ... Oakland is 1-9 in its last 10 games in Boston, including an 8-3 loss Monday. ... The Philadelphia Phillies beat Arizona 6-2 to improve to a majors-best 30-15 on the road.

                  AIN'T IT GRAND?

Washington's Josh Willingham became the 13th player to hit two grand slams in a game, achieving the feat in the Nationals' 14-6 win at Milwaukee on Monday night. He's the first to do it since Boston's Bill Mueller hit one from each side of the plate on July 29, 2003, against Texas. Willingham's eight RBIs were the most in Nationals history and tied the franchise mark. There were two other slams hit Monday night: by the Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano and the New York Mets' Fernando Tatis.

                  THROWING STRIKES

San Francisco's Tim Lincecum struck out 15 in a 4-2 win over Pittsburgh on Monday night, marking the sixth time this season and 17th in his young career that Lincecum struck out 10 or more. He's only the third Giants pitcher since 1958 to strike out 15 or more and first since Jason Schmidt had 16 on June 6, 2006.

                  NAILING IT

St. Louis' Chris Carpenter improved to 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA in July with a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. He bounced back after dropping three of his last four starts in June, and his 2.19 ERA is second in the NL.

                  SORRY-ANO

Alfonso Soriano had an embarrassing moment in the 11th inning of the Chicago Cubs' 5-1 win over Houston, when he hit a slow bouncer to third with one out and a runner on first. He didn't run, even though the ball was fair, and continued to stand in the box after he was thrown out at first and booed by the fans, saying the ball hit him on his foot. Two innings later, he hit a walkoff grand slam to win it.

                  STORMING BACK

Victor Martinez hit a three-run homer off Los Angeles closer Brian Fuentes in the ninth inning, and the Cleveland Indians rallied for an 8-6 victory over the Angels on Monday night.

                  HOME SWEET HOME

In his last five starts at Fenway Park, Josh Beckett is 5-0 with a 1.19 ERA and 36 strikeouts, while allowing 23 hits and four walks. For the season, he is 7-0 in 10 starts at home, including an 8-3 victory over Oakland on Monday night. ... Minnesota beat Chicago 4-3, improving to 12-2 at the Metrodome against the White Sox.

                  DOUBLE VISION

Newly acquired Matt Holliday doubled in the first inning of St. Louis' 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night, becoming the first Cardinals player to get two-baggers in each of his first four games, according to statistics dating to 1954.

                  STOPPER STOPPED

Seattle's Felix Hernandez allowed seven runs - tying a career worst - and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings, taking the loss in an 11-4 defeat against Toronto on Monday night. He had won a career-best seven consecutive decisions and was 10-2 with a 1.94 ERA following a Mariners loss this season.

                  GEERING UP

Cincinnati hit three of its four home runs in a 6-4 win Monday night off San Diego's Josh Geer, who has given up an NL-high 27 long balls. Geer fell to 0-4 in eight road starts this season with a 7.33 ERA. He has never won in 10 road starts over the last two seasons.

                  NEW YORK MESS

Mets GM Omar Minaya called a mid-afternoon news conference Monday to announce the firing of Tony Bernazard, the club's vice president of player development who was dismissed after a series of high-profile incidents. The news conference took a strange turn when he questioned the motives of beat writer Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, who had reported on the recent turmoil and who Minaya said had lobbied him for a job. Rubin called the allegation "deplorable'' and said he had merely asked Minaya and Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon for career advice.

                  GIANTS GET GARKO

The San Francisco Giants acquired first baseman Ryan Garko from the Cleveland Indians on Monday in exchange for Class-A left-hander Scott Barnes. Garko was batting .285 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. Barnes, considered a Top-20 prospect in San Francisco's organization, was 12-3 with a 2.85 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 18 starts and 98.0 innings.

                  SPEAKING

"Do I want to tell you the version, the truth that's going to get me in trouble or am I going to be the nice guy? Well, I thought it was a strike and I told him, 'Come on, I need that pitch. You don't need any help.' And he said, 'Knock it off.' And I waved him off and he threw me out of the game. Maybe he was having a bad day. I thought he had determined who he wanted to win the game anyway.'' - Houston reliever LaTroy Hawkins, who was ejected by plate umpire Mike Everitt in the eighth inning of the Astros' 5-1 loss in 13 innings at Chicago.

Atlanta Braves at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]

Braves (-$1.30 O/U 8.5): Atlanta has captured eight of 11 games since the All-Star break to move within 3 1/2 games of the lead in the National League Wild Card chase. There are three teams either in front or tied with the Braves for the Wild Card spot, including a Marlins team that they will face Tuesday in the first game of a three-game series. The acquisitions of Derek Lowe, Javier Vazquez and Kenshin Kawakami have provided the Braves with a starting rotation that has produced a Major League-best 3.62 ERA this year. Dating back to June 26, Atlanta's rotation has gone 13-6 with a 2.84 ERA. Jair Jurrjens (9-7, 2.67 ERA) matched up with Giants ace Tim Lincecum last Wednesday and recorded a 4-2 victory as a $1.10 home favorite. The right-hander tossed 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on three hits while fanning a season-high nine batters. Jurrjens has allowed just five hits in his last 12 2/3 inning. After going winless in June, Jurrjens has won four of five starts in July and has won his last three in a row. Against the Marlins on May 7, Jurrjens went seven innings and allowed just two runs on three hits in a Braves win. Chipper Jones is 9-for-16 (.563) with three homers and three doubles lifetime against Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco. Brian McCann is 7-for-19 with two homers off the Florida right-hander.

The Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings with Florida.

                          Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Marlins: Florida returns home after a very successful West Coast trip that saw the team take five of the six outings. Florida has tightened its defense considerably, evidenced by the club committing just one error on the road excursion. The Marlins swept a three-game series against Atlanta in April, outscoring the Braves 21-7 in the process. Ricky Nolasco (7-7, 5.42 ERA) gets the ball in Tuesday’s opener. The 26-year-old struck out 10 Padres in 6 1/3 innings during his last start en route to a 5-0 victory as a $1.45 road favorite. In four July outings, the right-hander has struck out 35 batters in 26 1/3 innings. He's also won five of his last six decisions. Though this is his first appearance this year against the Braves, Nolasco is just 1-4 lifetime against them with a bloated 5.18 ERA. A year ago, he was 0-3 with a 10.57 ERA against the Braves. Dan Uggla is 5-for-11 (.455) off Jurrjens, while Ramirez is 4-for-12 (.333) with three home runs and a triple.

Florida is 10-4 in its last 14 home games.

Washington Mystics at Indiana Fever (-7.5)

Although the Fever have been one of the league’s hottest teams, they likely are in for a tough home game against the surging and motivated Mystics.

Washington is coming off impressive back-to-back wins in which it got balanced efforts on both ends of the court.

Crystal Langhorne had 19 points to lead four players in double figures in their 87-73 win over Sacramento Monarchs. Three Mystic players also scored in double figures in their 75-64 win over Chicago.

The Mystics will be looking to avenge last week’s 82-70 loss to Indiana, the Fever’s lone win in a recent three-game road swing.

Washington is 7-2 against the spread in its last nine road games; the points appear to have some value here.

                            Pick: Washington

Phoenix Mercury at Connecticut Sun (-3)

This appears to be the Something Has to Give game of the season thus far in the NBA. Diana Taurasi and the league’s top-ranked offense face the league’s top-ranked defense in Connecticut.

Both teams have momentum working in their favor; the Mercury have won and covered in their past three road games, while the Sun have won and covered in five of their past six home tilts.

The Mercury’s offense has lit up the scoreboard at a whopping 93.1 points per game but faces a Sun defense that holds opponents to just 70.1. Connecticut also leads the league in field-goal and 3-point percentage defense.

What’s more, the Sun have enough offense of their own (74.2 ppg, eighth in the league) to hang in a fast-paced game.

                            Pick: Connecticut
