  • Nascar question

I watch a lot of Nascar and i have never seen or heard anyone ever talk about this.

Why can't they put a spedometer in the car? It would solve all speeding penalties wouldn't it? I know they might not go up to 200 or whatever but after all these years they can't figure out how to get one in a car? They can't add that much weight to the vehicle.

I think it's because it is just something else for the drivers to look at and get distracted with. And whether you're reading 45 mph or 4,000 RPM on the tach, it really doesn't matter.

It seems like an easy fix to me. Like you said kb, they are looking down at gauges anyway so why not? I've never heard a reason why.

It's just as easy to look down and see 4,000 RPM on the tachometer as it is to see 45 mph, so I guess the teams look at it as something they don't need.

I wouldn't trust the tach with all different makes & models out there

... and, the tach obviously doesn't work that well because EVERY week we have speeding penalties and most times the guys freak out and say they were not speeding. The only thing that would show them their speed is something that actually shows them their speed. You would think after having 1,000 of these penalties, somebody would come up with something better ...... like a spedometer!

Speedometer's can be off just like tach's can. They all freak out cause they're pissed off and know any chance of winning the race is usually gone! They'd be saying the same thing with a speedometer in the car as a tach imo.

I know but c'mon, if you have gauges in there, add the one that shows your damn speed so you know. It is seriously one of the dumbest things i see in Nascar. A sport where the fastest car is what you want but you can get speeding penalties. Fix something because having a speeding penaly cost a guy a race is seriously one of the tackiest and dumbest things going when you are in a "Race".

They don't serve any purpose imo. You can get all the info you need from it off a tach. They already have a bunch of gauges to look at anyway.

kb, Since i've been watching Nascar, every time a problem persists, they look in to ways of fixing it. I and you could list 100 things as an example. This is not a once in a while problem, it is a WEEKLY problem. It happens too often. We all have tachs on our cars but who the hell uses them to judge their speed? These guys may think they have it figured out by the tach but guess what, they CLEARLY don't and the way to solve that and keep the guess work out is a spedometer. Every one of us use it to judge our speed so it is an obvious answer to me. There is not another problem during a race (Penalty wise) that comes up as often as this. Nothing even close. That tells me the tach is not as accurate as a spedometer would be and i'm shocked that no team has looked in to trying something different.

I think what you would find is the speedometer would cause just as many problems as the tach. Nascar loosening up the rules a bit would be the only solution to this problem imo.

A speedometer wouldn't do them any good going down pit road. They might be right on 55 but with someone talking in your ear plus other cars in front of and beside and pulling out in front of you plus looking for you own pit box.Next thing you know they could be going 45 or 65.It's not like they can just drive and keep there head down looking at the speed

Well if it can cost you a race, maybe they should pay more attention to it. Speeding on pit road is just as bad as missing your pit box but that doesn't happen 10 times a race.
