    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, July 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cardinals close out their series with the Astros, the Giants battle the Braves in Atlanta, and the Rays take on the ChiSox.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

James Shields (6-6, 3.75 ERA) will try to pitch the Rays to a win on Wednesday night when they continue their series in Chicago against the White Sox. Righthander Shields was blasted by the Royals last time out, surrendering seven earned runs on 11 hits over 5 1-3 innings of work; Shields' last win came on June 20. The White Sox originally had John Danks slated to pitch on Wednesday, but he was scratched with a finger injury. Call-up Carlos Torres will start in his place.

Elsewhere around the American League on Wednesday: Baltimore at the Yankees, Minnesota at Oakland, Seattle at Detroit, Cleveland at Toronto, the Angels at Kansas City, and Boston at Texas. The Red Sox will go with Tim Wakefield (11-3, 4.31 ERA) in their series finale; the knuckleballer has picked up a victory in seven of his last 10 trips to the mound. Vicente Padilla (7-5, 4.67 ERA), who lost to the Twins in his last outing, will take to the hill for the Rangers.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The top pitching matchup in the National League on Wednesday will take place in Houston, where the Astros' Roy Oswalt (6-4, 3.65 ERA) will battle the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter (8-3, 2.26 ERA). Righthander Oswalt shut down the Dodgers last time out, holding them to one earned run on four hits in a complete-game victory. Righthander Carpenter was dominant last time out as well, blanking the Diamondbacks on seven hits over eight innings while fanning seven.

Also on the NL slate for Wednesday: Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Arizona at Colorado, Florida at San Diego, the Mets at Washington, the Cubs at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at the Dodgers, and San Francisco at Atlanta. Tim Lincecum (10-2, 2.27 ERA) goes for the Giants in that matchup; the righthander has given up three or fewer earned runs in each of his last 11 outings. Jair Jurrjens (8-7, 2.77 ERA) will be gunning for his third straight win for the Braves.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA offers up five games on Wednesday, with Atlanta at Detroit, New York at Chicago, Sacramento at Connecticut, Los Angeles at Seattle, and Minnesota at Phoenix. The Mercury head into Wednesday's matchup with a West-best 12-4 straight-up (and 12-4 against-the-spread) record, and they beat Detroit 97-90 in their last contest. The Lynx fell 72-69 to Seattle last time out to sit at 9-7 both SU and ATS this season. Minnesota is also at 5-2 ATS on the road.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

Odds and ends from the old American Football League

-- AFL's first commissioner was a guy named Joe Foss, who got the Congressional Medal of Honor for gunning down 26 Japanese aircraft as a fighter pilot during World War II.

-- The first QB in Denver Broncos history was Frank Tripucka, who had a son named Kelly who later became a star in the NBA.

-- The longest field goal in AFL history? George Blanda, 55 yards.

-- In 1961-2, Oakland Raiders went 3-25, with 19-game losing streak. Al Davis took the team over in '63 and they immediately went 10-4.

-- Jets' Steve O'Neal has a record that may never be broken; he punted a ball 98 yards at Mile High Stadium in Denver.

-- Kansas City Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans; first player they ever drafted was a QB named Don Meredith, who wound up in the NFL with the Cowboys and later became famous as an analyst of sorts on ABC's Monday Night Football.

Wednesday's List of 13: Quick thoughts on a summer day.........

      13) Did something little different and went and saw Kevin Costner play with his band at a small club around here Tuesday night-- he has a band called Modern West and they're pretty good. Hundreds of 40-ish women swooning when he walked on stage, and I do mean hundreds.

      12) Their band was here Tuesday, in Connecticut Wednesday, then off to Iowa, Montana and Alberta over the next ten days. Not as glamorous as being a movie star, but he looked like he was having fun, and you can not put a pricetag on that.

      11) Interesting complete game shutout for Nationals' John Lannon-- he didn't walk anyone, struck out only one, and induced only four swings and misses, but he had the Mets eating out of his hand, winning 4-0. He threw 80 strikes, 26 balls-- you get hitters out by throwing strikes.

      10) Mets claim they didn't talk trade with Toronto, to which I say, why the hell not?!?!?!?!?! The best pitcher in baseball is available-- if you did not ask what it would take to get him, you're not doing your job.......if you don't trade for Halladay, so be it, but YOU HAVE TO ASK!!!!

      9) Werth's walkoff HR in the 13th gave Phillies their 10th win row, 4-1 over Cubs, as they threaten to run and hide from rest of the NL East.

      8) With the trading deadline nine days away, you wonder if management in Philly will think strip-mining their farm system to get Roy Halladay from Toronto is really necessary. Doesn't look that way right now.

      7) Interesting three days for A's, who lost 3-2 in 10 innings Tuesday, a night after their wild 14-13 win, which came day after they lost 1-0 to the Angels in 10 Sunday. They're not good, but they're interesting.

      6) Brewers are now 18-1 in their last 19 games against the Pirates.

      5) As usual, the Indians didn't hit much for Cliff Lee, but Martinez hit a two-run double in top of 9th, giving Tribe a 2-1 win in Toronto, driving another nail in the Blue Jays' coffin. Hard to believe Cleveland would be interested in trading Lee, but he's pitching great and would be cheaper to trade for than Roy Halladay.

      4) Rays scored twice in 9th inning off Bobby Jenks to win for 4th time in last five games (all late-inning comeback wins), 3-2 in Chicago. Tough pitching duel between Niemann/Richard wound up in the Rays' favor.

      3) JP Losman opted to sign with the UFL's Las Vegas team, rather than hook on as a backup with an NFL team. Interesting decision-- he'll play for Jim Fassel in Vegas, so he'll be getting quality coaching in the UFL.

      2) NFL commissioner Goodell should reinstate Michael Vick as soon as possible-- he has been punished enough.

      1) Quite a day in Albany area Tuesday; not only the Costner concert, but at the Times Union Arena downtown, a motivational seminar with Colin Powell and Rudy Giuliani drew 9,700 people and created one of the worst morning rush hour traffic jams Albany has ever seen.

-Erick Aybar, Angels, broke open a close game with a three-run triple and had seven hits in two games, helping Los Angeles complete a doubleheader sweep of the Royals with a 10-2 victory. Aybar had three hits and scored three runs as the Angels won the opener 8-5.

-Michael Cuddyer, Twins, hit a go-ahead triple in the 10th inning and Minnesota beat Oakland 3-2.

        SHOW ME THE PLAYERS

Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi has set a July 28 deadline to complete a deal for 2003 Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay. Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline is July 31. Ricciardi said July 6 he would field offers for Halladay, who is signed through 2010 and has a full no-trade clause. Ricciardi said he hasn't gotten an appropriate offer yet.

        OUCH

All-Star knuckleballer Tim Wakefield is headed to the disabled list because of a lower back problem. Manager Terry Francona said Wakefield, who turns 43 next week, got hurt throwing on the side Saturday.

        STINGER

Manny Ramirez is day to day after being hit by a pitch in the Los Angeles Dodgers 12-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. A team spokesman said Ramirez was hit on the side of his left hand by a pitch from Homer Bailey leading off the third inning Tuesday night. He was replaced by pinch runner Juan Pierre. Ramirez went to a hospital for precautionary X-rays, which were negative.

        SUSPENDED

Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum was suspended three games and fined an undisclosed sum for yelling at umpires after a game in Cinncinnati. Baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson cited Sveum's "inappropriate and aggressive actions'' toward the umpires after the Reds' 5-3 win Sunday night. The suspension began with Tuesday night's game at Pittsburgh.

        IN A LONG TIME

Sergio Mitre earned his first win since July 29, 2007, as the surging Yankees beat Baltimore 6-4. Mitre, who was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the game, allowed four runs, three earned, and eight hits over 5 2-3 innings in his first major league start since Sept. 15, 2007. Mitre missed the 2008 season and had elbow-ligament replacement surgery on July 15 last year. He agreed to a minor league contract with the Yankees during the offseason, then was suspended for the first 50 games after testing positive for a banned substance under the major league drug program. ... The Angels' Robb Quinlan hit first homer since May 4, 2008, against Baltimore, as Los Angeles beat the Royals 10-2 in the second game of a a doubleheader.

        SIDELINED

Washington Nationals left-hander Scott Olsen will have surgery Thursday to repair the labrum in his left shoulder and will miss the rest of the season. The Nationals put Olsen on the disabled list Sunday. The decision to do the surgery was made after he was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., Monday. Olsen made 11 starts for the Nationals, going 2-4 with a 6.03 ERA.

        SLIDE

Boston lost to Texas 4-2 and has lost four straight for the first time since last July, scoring only eight runs in the stretch. The Yankees beat Baltimore 6-4 to break the tie for the AL East lead.

        DANKS DOWN

John Danks will miss his scheduled start Wednesday for the White Sox against the Rays because of a blister on his left index finger. The White Sox do not expect Danks to miss more than one start, although the blister on his pitching hand has bothered him the past few outings. Losing Danks for an extended period would be a big blow for the White Sox. He is 8-6 with a 3.98 ERA.

        STATS

The Royals bullpen has allowed 27 earned runs over its last 26 innings after posting a 2.78 ERA the previous 18 games. ... Jack Cust's fourth-inning strikeout ended a stretch of 68 consecutive batters without a strikeout for Oakland, the club's longest such streak since doing so for 75 batters in a row from May 14-16, 1990.

        SPEAKING

"It's always great when you win a game, especially like this and especially for the guy who was on the mound. Cliff has been throwing the ball great for us and it's kind of sad to watch Cliff pitch and not get any run support.'' - Cleveland's Victor Martinez after hitting a two-run double in the ninth to make Cliff Lee a winner, 2-1 over the Blue Jays. The Indians came in averaging just 3.48 runs per game in Lee's 20 starts.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-110, 7.5)

You just don't get Tim Lincecum at this price.

The emerging favorite for the National League Cy Young Award, Lincecum is +102 for the series finale. It is his 20th start of the season and the first time he has been an underdog.

Lincecum's previous lowest price was -108 at Oakland on June 23, a 4-1 win in which he pitched a seven-hitter with 12 strikeouts, one shy of his season high.

Since losing April 12 at San Diego as a favorite of -115, Lincecum has won all five starts when his price has been -125 or lower, allowing six runs, 21 hits and nine walks while striking out 43 in 38 1-3 innings.

The righthander also is 4-0 in his last five starts and tossed eight scoreless innings vs. Atlanta on May 26.

                Pick: San Francisco

New York Mets at Washington Nationals (-111, 9)

The Washington Nationals aren't favored too often, and it's easy to see why.

The Nationals have been favored just four times in their last 32 games. Two of those have come in their current losing streak - a 5-0 loss at Houston in Manny Acta's final game as manager July 12 and a 6-2 setback in the opener of this series. They are 6-14 as a favorite this season.

Washington has not won since replacing Acta with Jim Riggleman over the All-Star break. They already have five losing streaks of at least five games and are one shy of matching their longest of the season, which they have done twice.

Already 40 games under .500, the Nationals will try to buck these trends with righthander Craig Stammen, who has lost both his starts against the Mets this season, including one as a favorite.

                Pick: New York

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds)

Arroyo had some rough stretches in the first half that saw his appearance in the bottom of this column on a couple of occasions. But the right-hander has turned it around of late.

Arroyo is working on 16 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just nine hits and two walks while striking out 11 in that span.

"I'm a roller coaster out there," Arroyo told the team's web site. "Right now, I'm going good. I'll take every zero on the board I can get. The more you go out there like that, you feel confident."

Matched up against the Dodgers, Arroyo will be trying to win three straight starts for the first time since the beginning of the season.

                  Vicente Padilla (Texas Rangers)

There are some obvious streaking pitchers going Wednesday, such as Felix Hernandez, Tim Lincecum and Chris Carpenter. And there are some not so obvious ones, like Padilla.

The right-hander's individual performances have been on a seesaw lately. In his last four starts, he twice has followed a one-run outing by allowing five runs.

But there have been two models of consistency from Padilla in his seven starts since early June. He has worked at least five innings and the total has been under each time.

                  Jamie Moyer (Philadelphia Phillies)

With the signing of Pedro Martinez and the continued pursuit of Roy Halladay, the Phillies clearly are looking for pitching. Maybe they should be looking more closely at Moyer, who has been delivering of late.

The 46-year-old lefty had a choppy start to the season but seems to have settled down. He has won five straight starts over the last month.

In his first 13 starts, Moyer had just two outings in which he allowed no more than one earned run. He's had three during his hot streak. He is coming off his best start of the season, allowing one hit in seven scoreless innings at Florida.

Moyer, who is susceptible to the long ball, hasn't surrendered a homer in five of his last eight starts.

                  Slumping

                  Jason Berken (Baltimore Orioles)

On May 26, the rookie righty won his major league debut. He hasn't won since and has had trouble keeping the ball down.

"I just got to find a way to be more consistent down in the zone, that way when mistakes do happen, there's less chance that I will be hurt with it," Berken told the team's web site.

Berken is 0-7 in his last nine starts, and the Orioles have won just one of those games. They have lost the last five times he has taken the mound.

During his slide, Berken has worked into the sixth inning just twice. In 45 1-3 innings, he has given up 57 hits and 16 walks for a WHIP (walks + hits per inning) of 1.61.

                  Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles Dodgers)

Ever since Billingsley's name was mentioned in a possible package for Halladay - which no longer looks like it will happen - he hasn't been the pitcher who was dominant over the first three months of the season.

Billingsley's last two starts have been his shortest and worst of the season. He has given up 14 hits, four walks and 11 runs in just 6 2-3 innings.

Between those starts, Billingsley pitched one inning in the All-Star Game, giving up a run and two hits and costing NL five-inning players a win. He is still carrying the high price that comes with his reputation.

Tampa Bay Rays at Chicago White Sox [8:10 PM ET]

Rays (-$1.35 O/U 9): Tampa Bay pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday to slip past the White Sox as a $1.20 road favorite, 3-2. The combined five runs ducked well ‘under’ the 10-run closing total, enabling the ‘under’ to cash in the first two games of this four-game series. The Rays entered the outing by dropping four of the first five meetings of the season against the Pale Hose. The Rays are now a sparkling 36-23 versus right-handed starters and 14-15 in one-run games. Though the Rays captured Tuesday’s game, they have scored three runs or less in five of the six series meetings. James Shields (6-6, 3.75 ERA) will toe the rubber in Wednesday’s contest. The Rays' No. 1 starter is 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA in four career starts against the White Sox, including a 6-5 victory as a $2.10 home favorite earlier this season (April 17). The 27-year-old allowed five runs on seven hits (two homers) in 7 1/3 innings. The combined 11 runs leaped ‘over’ the 8 ½-run closing total.

The Under is 13-3 in the Rays’ last 16 road games.

                          Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

White Sox: Chicago saw its record in one-run games fall to 11-14 after Tuesday’s 3-2 setback. The loss also lowered the club’s record at U.S. Cellular Field to 25-23. Ozzie Guillen’s troops are also just 30-34 versus right-handed starting pitchers. With John Danks sidelined by a blister problem on his left index finger, 26-year-old Carlos Torres will be called up from Triple-A Charlotte to make his Major League debut. Torres enters with an 8-4 record and an impressive 2.20 ERA as the Knights' staff ace. The right-hander has started in 67 of his 157 career Minor League appearances. He has 96 strikeouts and 38 walks in 98 innings this season, allowing just 72 hits and three home runs. This situation could be a one-and-back-down for Torres, with Bartolo Colon expected to come off the disabled list on Friday. The White Sox should continue to get a lift from the return of slugging outfielder Carlos Quintin. The 26-year-old finished 15-for-40 with four doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs over 14 combined rehab contests with the Knights and Class A Kannapolis.

The White Sox are 7-3 in their last 10 home games.

                          Key Injuries - None

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Sacramento Monarchs at Connecticut Sun (-8, 142)

Last week, the Monarchs changed coaches, hoping to jump-start a team that reached the playoffs a year ago. It hasn't worked.

Since GM John Whisenant replaced Jenny Boucek on the sidelines, the Monarchs are 0-3 straight up and against the spread, extending both streaks to five games. They are shooting less than 36 percent from the field since the coaching change.

Sacramento has the worst record aganist the spread (ATS), overall record, home record and road record in the league.

The Monarchs were swept by the Sun a year ago, losing twice by a combined 39 points.

                            Pick: Connecticut -8

Minnesota Lynx at Phoenix Mercury (-3.5, 178.5)

Lynx forward and leading scorer Simeone Augustus has been sidelined since June 12 with a knee injury. Mercury guard and WNBA leading scorer Diana Taurasi will serve the second game of her two-game team suspension for a DUI arrest.

Their absences should have no effect on the league's top two offenses.

Phoenix leads the league in scoring at 93.4 points per game, ringing up 97 without Taurasi on Sunday. Minnesota is second at 81.7 points, with three players averaging at least 13 points per contest.

These teams have the top two records against the over this season and have exceeded the total in their last nine meetings, with one team scoring at least 90 points in all of those games.

                            Pick: Over 178.5
