    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, July 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox play host to the Rays, the Red Sox take on the Rangers, and the Cubs continue their series in Philadelphia.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Josh Beckett (11-3, 3.35 ERA) will be looking for his 12th win of the season on Tuesday night when his Red Sox continue their road series against the Rangers and Tommy Hunter (1-1, 2.35 ERA). Righthander Beckett has picked up the win in each of his last two starts, and Boston is 8-2 over his last 10 trips to the mound. Righthander Hunter had to settle for a no-decision versus the Mariners in his most recent start despite throwing six scoreless innings and allowing four hits.

Also on the American League schedule for Tuesday: Seattle at Detroit, Baltimore at the Yankees, Cleveland at Toronto, the Angels at Kansas City, Minnesota at Oakland, and Tampa Bay at the White Sox. Rays starter Jeff Niemann (8-4, 3.73 ERA) is coming off a stellar outing against the A's in which he tossed a complete-game shutout. Clayton Richard (3-3, 5.42 ERA) gets the ball for Chicago on Tuesday night; Richard has given up 10 earned runs over his last 4 2-3 innings.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Rich Harden (6-6, 5.06 ERA) taking on Joe Blanton (6-4, 4.44 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Cubs and Phillies continue their series in Philadelphia. Righthander Harden got back into the win column last time out, holding the Nationals to one unearned run on three hits over six innings of work. Righthander Blanton has come up big in each of his last two starts, allowing only one earned run on eight hits over 14 2-3 innings in those games against the Pirates and Mets.

Rounding out the National League slate for Tuesday: the Mets at Washington, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, San Francisco at Atlanta, St. Louis at Houston, Florida at San Diego, Cincinnati at the Dodgers, and Arizona at Colorado. Max Scherzer (5-6, 3.64 ERA) will get the ball for the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, while the Rockies counter with Aaron Cook (9-3, 3.85 ERA). Righthander Cook gave up just one earned run on eight hits over six innings versus the Padres last time out.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA offers up just one game on Tuesday night, with Indiana at Washington. The Fever saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday as they fell 67-61 to Connecticut. Indiana is now 11-3 straight-up and 9-5 against-the-spread on the season. The Mystics are coming off a slim 68-67 win over New York on Saturday, with Lindsey Harding providing a game-high 23 points. Washington is now 7-6 SU and 7-5-1 ATS through 13 games this season.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Odds and ends from the A's 14-13 win over Minnesota Monday, the greatest comeback in Oakland history (trailed 12-2 in third inning), a game played in front of 10,283 loyalists at the Oakland Coliseum......

-- Matt Holliday homered twice, doubled twice, knocking in six runs as the A's had the greatest comeback in team history, a day after they lost a 1-0 game in 10 innings to the Angels.

-- When was the last time a team won when their starting pitcher gave up 11 runs in 2.2 innings? Gio Gonzalez was treated like a piñata by the Minnesota batters, but A's bullpen gave up two runs in 6.1 IP.

-- The 3-4-5 hitters on both teams combined to go 19-26 for the nite.

-- Justin Morneau knocked in seven runs, Jason Kubel reached base all six times he came to bat, yet Minnesota still suffered a brutal loss that dropped them 2.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central.

-- Game ended when Michael Cuddyer tried to score from second on a wild pitch, but was called out on a very, very close play.

-- Best previous Oakland comebacks were from eight runs down in '06 at Toronto, and in 1993 against the Royals.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Mercifully, the A's put washed-up Jason Giambi on the DL with a sick bat-- I mean, with strained quadriceps. They gave no timetable for his return, which hopefully means never. Just go away. Please.

      12) New York papers reported last week that Mets GM Omar Minaya never once called Oakland to see whether Matt Holliday is available for a trade-- even if they can't afford Holliday or aren't interested, to me it is gross incompetence for a big market team not to call a small market club to talk trade, especially since the A's trade a lot with NL teams.

      11) Baseball can be a weird freaking game; the day after a demoralizing 10-inning, 1-0 loss to Angels, a game in which Brett Anderson retired the first 20 Angels but still didn't win, A's trailed 12-2 in the third inning, but showed grit and spunk in coming back for a 14-13 win, the greatest comeback win in the 42-year history of the Oakland A's. We have more on this bizarre baseball game in the box up above.

      10) Weird to watch a game from the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and see Sam Cassell coaching the Wizards' team. Not weird to see him politicking with refs, but odd to see him in street clothes, coaching.

      9) According to New York coaches, Knicks' draft pick Jordan Hill has to work on his 15-foot jump shot, to which I ask, what the hell did he do at Arizona for three years? College teams practice a lot, for a kid not to be able to make a 15-footer? Yikes. Teams don't practice shooting enough, and kids really, really don't work on shooting enough in the offseason.

      8) Not sure what to make of Timberwolves talking to Colorado Buffs' coach Jeff Bzdelik about their head coaching opening. It creates a lot of questions on different fronts that will have to be answered.........
-- Would Bzdelik leave Boulder to go back to the NBA?
-- Is he using the publicity to help his recruiting at Colorado?
-- What would Colorado do if he did leave for the NBA?
-- How does Minnesota not have a head coach with summer league going on, a full month after the NBA Draft?
-- Is Minnesota interesting in Bzdelik, or were they gathering info on other candidates?
-- Does the Ricky Rubio signing have anything to do with this delay?
-- Do the Timberwolves have any idea what they're doing?
Only time will provide the answers to these seven questions.

      7) Shaquille O'Neal is the guest host on WWE Raw next Monday night, and I really wish I was making that up, but its true.

      6) Tampa Rays are 9-0 with Matt Garza starting when they score four or more runs; they're 0-10 when they score less than four runs.

      5) Tigers have to pay Magglio Ordonez $18M next year if his total plate appearances for 2008-9 reach 1,080, but he's platooning more lately, so its less likely he'll hit the 1,080 PAs he needs for the $18M to kick in. Ordonez' production has been down, but still, can't be good for morale, although being in first place usually trumps most morale issues.

      4) Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw has allowed one run in 24 IP so far this month, allowing only eight hits, 11 walks with 21 strikeouts.

      3) Brandon Arroyo is 2-0, 0.00 in his last two starts (16 IP), after being 0-3, 13.50 in his previous three outings. Someone learned a new pitch, or some new pitching trick to turn things around so quickly.

      2) I've never seen American Idol, but I read where Simon Cowell makes $36M a year on that show, and Ryan Seacrest, whoever he is, makes a cool $15M a year (seriously, if he came up to me and said hi, I wouldn't have a clue who he is), so Paula Abdul must have an 8-figure salary too, right? So no wonder she's not happy producers of the show don't seem too anxious to bring her back for this year, which begins with auditions on August 6th, or so I am told. Must be nice to be a TV star.

      1) Its been forty years since we put a man on the moon but I still can't get the NFL Network on my cable system. So much for progress.

Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia (7:05 p.m. EDT). A matchup of NL clubs that have won consecutive division titles. Rich Harden is on the mound for the Cubs against Joe Blanton and the Phillies, going for their first 10-game win streak since 1991.

        STARS

        Monday

-Manny Ramirez, Dodgers, hit his 537th home run to pass Mickey Mantle and move into 15th place on the career list as Los Angeles beat Cincinnati 7-5.

-Matt Holliday, Athletics, hit a tying grand slam in the seventh inning and drove in six runs, helping Oakland rally from a 10-run deficit to beat Minnesota 14-13.

-Tommy Hanson, Braves, struck out 11 to remain unbeaten at 5-0, giving up three runs and five hits in seven innings as Atlanta beat San Francisco 11-3 in Jonathan Sanchez's first start since tossing a no-hitter.

-Jorge De La Rosa, Rockies, gave up one run on four hits over seven strong innings in his fifth straight win and drove in two runs, helping Colorado beat Arizona 10-6.

-Hideki Matsui, Yankees, homered off Jim Johnson in the ninth inning to beat Baltimore and give streaking New York 2-1 wins in three straight games for the first time in 18 years.

-Livan Hernandez, Mets, threw seven solid innings, allowing two runs and five hits to end a four-game losing streak and lead New York to a 6-2 victory over Washington.

-Rick VandenHurk, Marlins, pitched six strong innings to earn his first win in more than a year, leading Florida to a 3-2 victory over San Diego.

        STATS

Thirteen of the 16 homers allowed by the New York Yankees' Andy Pettitte this year have been at home. ... Carl Crawford's inside-the-park homer in the White Sox's 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday was the first at U.S. Cellular Field since Chris Singleton hit one for Chicago against Kansas City on Sept. 29, 2000. Seattle's Marc Newfield hit one on June 25, 1995. ... The New York Mets' Livan Hernandez improved to 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA against Washington this season, and 8-1 with a 2.74 ERA against the Nationals in his career. ... San Diego has lost 15 of 19 and has the majors' worst record since June 1 at 12-31.

        STORMING BACK

Matt Holliday homered twice, including a tying grand slam in the seventh inning, and Jack Cust followed with another shot, helping the Athletics rally from a 10-run deficit - the largest comeback in Oakland history - and beat the Minnesota Twins 14-13 in a slugfest Monday night that featured eight home runs. The game ended when Michael Cuddyer was thrown out trying to score from second on Michael Wuertz's wild pitch.

        PHANTASTIC PHILLIES

Raul Ibanez hit a three-run homer, Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard each went deep to back Rodrigo Lopez, and the Philadelphia Phillies won their ninth straight, 10-1 over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. The Phillies have a shot at their first 10-game winning streak since 1991.

        NO NO-NO

San Francisco's Jonathan Sanchez struck out eight over six solid innings in the Giants' 11-3 loss to Atlanta on Monday night. It was his first game since throwing a no-hitter against San Diego on July 10. He gave up three runs and four hits to the Braves in the no-decision.

        LONG TIME COMING

Delwyn Young and Garrett Jones homered to help the Pittsburgh Pirates end a 17-game skid against the Milwaukee Brewers with an 8-5 victory. The Pirates snapped the majors' longest losing streak against a single opponent in 39 years. The Baltimore Orioles won 23 straight against the Kansas City Royals from 1969-70.

        SERVING 'EM UP

Boston's John Smoltz gave up three homers in an inning for only the second time in his 21-year career, allowing shots by Michael Young, David Murphy and Jarrod Saltalamacchia in a 6-3 loss to Texas on Monday night. He hadn't allowed a home run in 25 innings this season until Young's. Smoltz allowed four homers in the first inning June 19, 1994, vs. Cincinnati when pitching for Atlanta. He hadn't allowed three homers in a game since June 8, 1997, at San Francisco.

        STREAKING

The New York Yankees (55-37) tied Boston atop the AL East for only the second time since early June with a 2-1 win - their third straight by that score - over Baltimore. They also stretched their post All-Star-break winning streak to four and moved 18 games over .500 for first time since the end of 2007 season (94-68). The Yankees hadn't won three straight 2-1 games since July 11-13, 1991, at Anaheim.

        WELCOME BACK

Making just his seventh start for the Dodgers since signing a three-year, $47 million contract in December 2006, Jason Schmidt threw 91 pitches over five innings and allowed three runs and five hits in Los Angeles' 7-5 win over Cincinnati. He missed the 2008 season after undergoing shoulder surgery on June 20, 2007, and had arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Sept. 10, 2008. ... Chicago's Carlos Quentin went 1 for 4 after missing nearly two months with plantar fasciitis in his left foot as the White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3.

        SOLID START

Gavin Floyd (8-6) went seven innings in the Chicago White Sox's 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays to improve to 6-2 in his last 11 starts. Floyd gave up three hits - all solo homers. Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria went deep and Carl Crawford had an inside-the-park homer.

        STRONG IN DEFEAT

Justin Morneau hit his second grand slam this season and a three-run homer for a career-high seven RBIs, but the Minnesota Twins couldn't hold a 12-2 lead and matched their biggest collapse with a 14-13 loss at Oakland. They also blew a 10-run lead on Sept. 28, 1984, at Cleveland.

        STRUGGLING

Washington has lost six straight following a 6-2 defeat to the New York Mets on Thursday night to lower its major league-worst record to 26-66. The Nationals are 0-5 since Jim Riggleman became interim manager a week ago.

        LOPSIDED RIVALRY

Carlos Lee's three-run homer in the fourth inning of Houston's 3-2 win over St. Louis was the fifth of his career against Kyle Lohse, the most of any player. Lee has a career .352 average against Lohse, who made his second start since coming off the disabled list.

        SPEAKING

"When you give up 22 hits, you're not supposed to win anyway. We gave up 22 hits, 14 runs and the amazing thing was we still should have won the game.'' - Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire after the Twins blew a 10-run lead and lost at Oakland 14-13 on Monday night.

        SEASONS

        July 21

1921 - The Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees combined for an AL record 16 doubles as the Indians won 17-8. Cleveland had nine doubles and New York seven.

1945 - The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics battled 24 innings and ended in a 1-1 tie. Les Mueller pitched 19 2-3 innings for the Tigers.

1956 - Brooks Lawrence of the Cincinnati Reds had his 13-game winning streak broken as Roberto Clemente's three-run homer led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory.

1970 - San Diego's Clay Kirby held the New York Mets hitless for eight innings but was lifted for a pinch hitter by manager Preston Gomez. With the Padres trailing 1-0 with two out in the eighth, Gomez elected to go for the win instead of letting Kirby finish the game. The Padres lost the no-hitter and the game, 3-0.

1973 - Hank Aaron of Atlanta hit his 700th home run in the third inning of an 8-4 Braves loss to Philadelphia. Aaron connected on a 1-1 fastball off Phillies pitcher Ken Brett.

1975 - Joe Torre of the New York Mets grounded into four double plays in a 6-2 loss to the Houston Astros. Felix Millan had four singles, but was wiped out each time by Torre.

2001 - In their highest-scoring game in 58 years, the Los Angeles Dodgers routed Colorado 22-7. The 22 runs were the most scored by the Dodgers since Brooklyn beat Pittsburgh 23-6 on July 10, 1943, at Ebbets Field.

2006 - Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player to reach 450 home runs when he homered in the New York Yankees' 7-3 loss to Toronto. Rodriguez also recorded his 2,000th career hit.

2008 - Detroit's 19-4 victory at Kansas City marked the third time this season the Tigers scored 19 runs. The Boston Red Sox were the last team to accomplish that feat, scoring 19 or more four times in 1950. Detroit beat Texas 19-6 on April 23 and Minnesota 19-3 on May 24.

        Today's birthday: CC Sabathia 29.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays (+110, 8.5)

The Indians have the worst team ERA in the majors at 5.32. You can’t blame their staff ace Cliff Lee for failing to do his part.

The 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner has a tough-luck record of 5-9; when you look at his 3.31 ERA, it’s clear to see the cause of his misfortune – inadequate run support.

Lee has yielded four or fewer runs in nine of his last 10 starts, yet he has just a 2-3 record with two no-decisions to show for his efforts in that span. In his one start against the Blue Jays this season, Lee put up a respectable outing but lost a 5-4 decision to Roy Halladay and Toronto.

Lee’s opponent Tuesday, Toronto’s Brett Cecil (3-1, 5.40 ERA) has benefited from the type of support Lee has failed to receive. He has give up five or more earned runs in three of his past five starts but has just one loss to show for it, notching a win against Baltimore and no decisions in his other three starts.

              Pick: Indians

Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia Phillies (-135, 9)

The red-hot Phillies won 12 of their past 13 games heading into this home stand against the inconsistent Cubs. They have quietly started to pull away from the rest of the National League East, and you can bet the 2008 World Series champions are aware that the rest of the NL East is on the proverbial ropes.

A few more wins and the Phillies might take the division by knockout. The Cubs come to Philadelphia off a four-game sweep of the hapless Washington Nationals, but there’s a good chance their momentum could stall in this road trip against perhaps the hottest team in baseball.

There appears to be value in backing Phillies starter Joe Blanton (6-4, 4.44 ERA), last year’s late-season acquisition who has yielded four earned runs or fewer in nine of his last 10 starts to post a record of 5-1 with four no decisions in that span. Chicago’s injury-prone and erratic Rich Harden (6-6, 5.06) has slumped to a 2-5 mark with one no-decision in his past eight starts.

Harden has given up four or more runs four times in this span, which might be an ominous sign against a surging Phillies lineup that has scored five or more runs in six of its past 10 wins.

              Pick: Phillies

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Wandy Rodriguez (Houston Astros)

The left-hander has been unbeatable for a month and untouchable over his last three starts as he learns to pitch to his strengths from game to game.

The Astros have won the last five games started by Rodriguez, who is 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA during that span to move among the National League leaders in ERA.

Over his last three outings, Rodriguez is 3-0 with an 0.41 ERA, allowing 17 hits and five walks while striking out 22. Two of those came against Manny Ramirez in his last outing.

"I used a lot more breaking balls because I saw a couple of hitters couldn't hit my breaking ball," Rodriguez told the team's web site.

Rodriguez has pitched 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

                Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox)

The righthander appears to be making a Cy Young Award push.

The Red Sox are 8-1 in Beckett's last nine starts, all as a favorite. In his last outing, Beckett had a price of -300 and kept his brave backers very much at ease as he overpowered Kansas City with a three-hit shutout. Boston is 3-0 when the price on Beckett is -200 or more.

The win over Kansas City marked the sixth time in his last 10 outings that Beckett has not allowed an earned run. Although he has been roughed up a bit twice in that stretch - both on the road - Beckett has lasted at least six innings every time out, with two complete games.

Beckett will be on nine days rest.

                Returning

                Sergio Mitre (New York Yankees)

It has been a long trip back to the mound for Mitre, who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since September 2007.

A 28-year-old righthander, Mitre has undergone Tommy John surgery, served a 50-game suspension after a positive test for a banned substance and done a stint in the minors. He went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA for Class-A Tampa and 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, making nine total starts.

Mitre is 10-23 with a 5.36 ERA in 78 career games, including 52 starts. He could be in the rotation for a while. He is a fill-in for Chien-Ming Wang, who is on the DL with shoulder woes and felt pain playing catch Monday.

                Slumping

                Bruce Chen (Kansas City Royals)

Kansas City's next win with Chen as starter will be its first. The lefthander came back in late June after missing all of last season with an injury and has regressed since his return.

In four starts, Chen has pitched progressively fewer innings while his location has gotten worse and he has become more prone to giving up the long ball. His pitches per inning have more than doubled.

Chen had a one-inning relief stint in his last outing but hasn't started since July 12.

                Rich Hill (Baltimore Orioles)

Hill has been off his game for nearly a month. Over his last four starts, he has allowed 30 hits and nine walks in 19 innings for an astronomical WHIP of 2.05. Hill lost only one of those starts, primarily because Baltimore's bats provided 24 runs of support.

In fact, Hill has been bailed out all season. He has five no-decisions in which he has allowed at least as many earned runs as innings pitched.

The lefthander lost a start over the All-Star break and pitched in relief in his last outing. He was no better in that role, giving up two runs while getting just one out.

Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

Mariners: Seattle traveled to Cleveland after the All-Star break and, after losing the first game of the four-game series against the Indians, promptly captured the next three. All four games ducked ‘under’ the closing total, enabling the ‘under’ to cash in each of Seattle’s last six outings. In fact, the Mariners have not allowed more than four runs in any of those four contests. The run of low-scoring games has lifted the ‘under’ to 55-35-2 in Seattle’s first 92 games. A win in Tuesday’s opener against the Tigers would raise Seattle’s road record to .500. Garrett Olson (3-3, 4.53) will get the pitching nod in the opener. The 26-year-old southpaw never got going last Thursday against Cleveland, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks before the Indians chased him in the third inning en route to a 4-1 win. In two starts against Detroit last season, Olson was tagged for 10 earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks in 7 2-3 innings. The Mariners are 4-5 in Olson’s nine starts this season, with the ‘under’ going 6-2-1. Seattle is six games above .500 despite getting outscored this season by 13 runs (376-363).

Seattle is 6-2 in its last eight road games.

                        Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Tigers (-$1.25 O/U 9): Detroit picked the wrong team to open the season’s second half, as they were swept in a three-game series by the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The Tigers continued to struggle on offense, scoring just five runs in the three-game set and going a remarkably dismal 1-for-26 with runners in scoring position. The Tigers do have two things going for them in Tuesday’s opener against Seattle. Jim Leyland’s troops are a fine 27-13 at Comerica Park and 18-11 against southpaw starters. Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.14) will make his first start since July 5, the result of the Tigers' effort to hold down his workload as the 20-year-old enters the second half of his rookie season. He pitched 125 innings last year in his only full pro season, and he's at 87 innings now. Porcello beat these Mariners, 8-2, on April 19 for his first Major League win. He tossed seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits as a $1.00 road underdog. The Tigers are 11-6 in Porcello’s first 17 starts, with the ‘under’ going 10-7.

Detroit is 20-8 in its last 28 home games.

                        Key Injuries - None

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                            Indiana at Washington
The Fever look to take advantage of a Washington team that is just 2-9 ATS in its last 11 games when playing with 2 days rest. Indiana is the pick (-1 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Fever favored by 6. Dunkel Pick: Indiana (-1 1/2). Here are all of today's picks.

                            TUESDAY, JULY 21

                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Fever at Washington Mystics (-1.5, 143.5)

If the Indiana Fever are looking for a little motivation, they won't have to search very hard.

In addition to having a franchise-record 11-game winning streak snapped in their last game, the first-place Fever may be feeling a bit snubbed by the announcement Monday of the All-Star reserves.

The Fever already had Tamika Catchings and Katie Douglas named as starters and Lin Dunn serving as coach. But none of their players were chosen as reserves, even though the Fever (11-3) have the best record in the WNBA and legitimate candidates in Tammy Sutton-Brown and Ebony Hoffman, both of whom average better than 10 points and five rebounds per game.

By comparison, the Chicago Sky are just 8-8 but have three All-Stars. The Atlanta Dream are 7-10 but have as many All-Stars as the Fever.

Expect Indiana take its frustrations out Tuesday night and improve on its recent, 6-1 record against Washington.

                            Pick: Indiana +1.5

                              Len’s Top Five

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for July 21, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

Pittsburgh Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault in Las Vegas. He denies it.
Michael Vick was released from federal custody yesterday. The ball is now in the NFL's court. He has served this time, is he now free to play football in the NFL?
Manny Ramirez hits home run #537 and moves ahead of my hero Mickey Mantle into 15th place all time.
The chase is on. The Yankees and Red Sox are now tied for first with 70 games to go.
Game of the night, the A's trailed the Twins 12-2 in the 3rd inning and won 14-13.
Mets ownership assures General Manager Omar Minaya and Manager Jerry Manuel that their jobs are safe. (If they don't get injured like all their players.)

                              2. Picky Picky

According to the New York Post the Yankees don't like one fan's creativity. Long Island's Steve Lore trademarked the phrase "the house that juice built" as his own little steroid protest. His T-shirt design includes the Yankee logo with a syringe instead of a baseball bat. The Yankee legal team is on the prowl. In honor of the Babe, maybe they'd prefer that Yankee Stadium be known as "the house that booze built?"

                              3. Fan-atic

You heard about David Beckham nearly coming to blows with a fan at a soccer game, but in Colombia things were far worse. A fan was heckling a soccer player and threw a stone at the player's car. So the soccer player got out and brandished a pistol to scare the guy. Next thing you know, the pistol accidentally went off..... several times, killing the fan. The soccer player now says he was drunk but faces 50 years in prison nonetheless. Something to chew on next time you want to take out your frustration on an underperforming athlete near you.

                              4. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

Paul McCartney finishes up his Citi Field gig tonight. I was there Saturday night and it would be much too easy to say it's the most noise Citi Field will hear all season, and certainly the most hits. Several years back McCartney was caught on camera singing along to one of his hits during a Yankee playoff game. I dubbed him "the fan of the month" on Spanning the World. Paul requested a copy of the tape. Yeah, he hasn't been honored much over the years. What a career thrill for him!

                              5. Knocking your Shot Stiff

Thanks to subscriber N.M. for tipping us off to a unique miniature golf course in Palatine, Illinois. It's in the basement of a funeral home. You go to a wake, and "play your respects." Some of the obstacles include coffins and tombstones and to add to the mood they play spooky music and screams. It's free and the owners say kids love it. Ya know it's never too early to associate golf with a slow painful death.

Happy Birthday: Former middleweight champ Gene Fullmer, who beat Sugar Ray Robinson in 1957. 78.
Bonus Birthday: Funny guy Robin Williams. 58.

Today in Sports: Althea Gibson becomes the first black woman to win a major U.S. tennis title. 1957.
Bonus Event: The first train robbery netted Jesse James and his gang $3,000. 1873.
