    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, July 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers play host to the Red Sox, the Yankees take on the Orioles, and the Giants try to grab a road victory in Atlanta.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

The Red Sox begin a series in Texas against the Rangers on Monday night, with John Smoltz (1-2, 5.40 ERA) taking on Kevin Millwood (8-7, 3.46 ERA). Righthander Smoltz grabbed his first victory of the season last time out, holding the Royals to one run on four hits over five innings of work (while fanning seven). Righthander Millwood will be looking to break back into the win column on Monday; he's lost two consecutive starts, giving up 13 earned runs in 11 innings.

Elsewhere on the abbreviated American League schedule for Monday: the Angels at Kansas City, Tampa Bay at the White Sox, Minnesota at Oakland, and Baltimore at the Yankees. The Orioles will go with David Hernandez (2-2, 3.94 ERA) on Monday night; Hernandez has given up three or fewer runs in each of his last three starts. The Yankees will counter at home with Andy Pettitte (8-5, 4.85 ERA), who is coming off back-to-back losses to the Blue Jays and Angels.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

Jason Schmidt (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is slated to make his season debut for the Dodgers on Monday night as they open a home series against the Reds and Micah Owings (6-9, 4.94 ERA). Righthander Schmidt has been on the disabled list all year long with shoulder issues and hasn't pitched in a Major League game since June 16, 2007. Righthander Owings was knocked around by the Phillies in his last start, surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits over his 4 1-3 innings.

Rounding out the National League schedule for Monday: Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Philadelphia, the Mets at Washington, St. Louis at Houston, Arizona at Colorado, Florida at San Diego, and San Francisco at Atlanta. The Giants will go with Jonathan Sanchez (3-8, 4.69 ERA) on Monday night; Sanchez is coming off his no-hit win over the Padres in which he struck out 11 batters. The Braves will counter with unbeaten rookie Tommy Hanson (4-0, 2.85 ERA) in that game.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Oakland's Brett Anderson had a no-hitter in 7th inning, until Bobby Abreu broke it up; of course, we didn't get to see the game, because all the 4:00 games were blacked out on the Extra Innings package.

-- Why? Because freakin' ESPN shows the stupid ESPYs Sunday at 9, so they moved up Sunday Night Baseball to 6, which means they have exclusive rights on TV from 6-9, which knocked four games off TV.

-- If the ESPYs are so important, why not show them live on the night they happen, Wednesday night? Why wait to show them on tape?

-- I like to watch games, not award shows, but ESPN likes to pat itself on the back over and over, so they could care less what I like, even if I am paying extra money to watch those games. I'm the idiot here.

-- Bo Van Pelt won on PGA Tour for the first time in 229 tries when he beat John Mallinger in a playoff in Milwaukee.

-- Mets' starting lineup Sunday had a combined 18 homers this year; Reds' Jay Bruce had 18 by himself, and didn't hit .210 this season.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) There was a 16-year old amateur from Italy, a 21-year old, and a guy with an artificial hip in top 12 at the British Open. It made for good TV but will be interesting to see what the TV ratings were, with no Woods and no Mickelson involved.

      12) Commentators on ABC were too kind to say Tom Watson choked on the putt on 18 that would have won him another Claret Jug, but he did just that. Walking an extra four holes with an artificial hip couldn't have been too much fun for him either, after he missed the putt to win it.

      11) Consensus amongst golfers I know is they like the 4-hole playoff the British Open has, but no chance of seeing it in this country- the ends of American torunaments are shoehorned so close to the start of prime time TV that you would never have time for four extra holes before dark.

      10) I got the feeling this was Lee Westwood's chance to win a major, and at one point late Sunday morning, it was his tournament to lose, but he did just that. I mean, this was just second time Eldrick Woods missed a cut in a major, which opened the door for everyone else.

      9) Brown Deer Golf Club, where they hold the Milwaukee Open on the PGA Tour, is 6,759 yards, par-70, making it the shortest course on the PGA Tour, and one of the oldest, too.

      8) They're having a day in Kansas City, a morning where for $300, you can take batting practice with former Royals pitching, and shag fly balls in the outfield-- you get a breakfast and some other stuff too, and meet lot of Royals' alumni. Kind of a mini-fantasy camp. Have to believe even I could come up with something better to do than that for $300.

      7) Weird to hear at least three announcers on local baseball broadcasts over weekend say on the air that they didn't watch the All-Star Game-- all three were from small markets, but still, you'd think they'd keep it to themselves. If they wanted to jazz up the All-Star Game, they'd drop the idea that it counts for anything and play US against the World.

      6) Watching the Nationals the last couple of weeks, it is unfathomable how the Pirates traded Nyjer Morgan-- the guy's a good player.

      5) Speaking of the Nationals, they were batting Christian Guzman sixth but he is hitting just .143 in that spot, compared to .300 at leadoff and .379 in the second spot in the order. With Morgan in DC, he ain't going to be batting leadoff anymore, and looks like Riggleman wants to get a few more at-bats for Johnson/Zimmerman rather than Guzman.

      4) San Diego Padres have a kid named Kyle Blanks who is 6-6, 285 but never played football, said his mom wouldn't let him, which probably made her popular with the other moms in the neighborhood. Blanks was a basketball player, and is now a 1B/OF prospect for the Friars.

      3) Phillies had an outstanding weekend, going 3-0 in Florida, as JA Happ blanked the Marlins 5-0 Sunday. Phils now lead the Fish by 7 games.

      2) Tennessee Vols' hoop coach Bruce Pearl missed the early part of the July recruiting period so he could coach in the Maccabiah Games over in Israel; well, it cost him a recruit this weekend, when a top-10 guard from Class of 2010 de-committed from Tennessee, re-opening his recruitment. No word on where the kid will go; the way teenagers are, he could still wind up in Knoxville, but Pearl will have his hands full once he gets back in this country, in time for the rest of the July recruiting period.

      1) Basketball recruits are funny; I remember talking to Buzz Peterson at the Summer Nationals in Orlando; he had just flown in from Vegas, but said he had to "babysit" a kid from Alabama who already committed to his Tennessee Vols. So he sat and watched the kid, and was glad to talk to me, since he was seriously jetlagged. Turns out Jeff Lebo stole the kid away anyway-- he went to Auburn instead of Tennessee, Buzz got fired at Tennessee, which is how Bruce Pearl got the Vols' job in first place.

        SCOREBOARD

        Monday, July 20

Cincinnati at L.A. Dodgers, (10:10 p.m. EDT). Jason Schmidt, who hasn't pitched in the majors since July 16, 2007, will be activated by Los Angeles from the 60-day DL to start against the Reds.

        STARS

        Sunday

-Roy Halladay, Blue Jays, pitched a six-hitter to win for the first time since June 7, leading Toronto past Boston 3-1.

-Joel Pineiro, Cardinals, pitched seven sharp innings and hit a two-run double to lead St. Louis over Arizona 2-1.

-Ian Kinsler, Rangers, hit both a leadoff and a game-winning homer in Texas' 5-3 victory against Minnesota in 12 innings.

-Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners, had three hits, scored twice and made a game-saving catch to help Seattle to a three-game sweep of Cleveland with a 5-3 win.

-Jason Marquis, Rockies, threw eight strong innings and drove in two runs to become the majors' first 12-game winner in Colorado's 6-1 victory at San Diego.

-Bobby Abreu and John Lackey, Angels. Abreu homered with one out in the 10th and broke up rookie Brett Anderson's bid for a perfect game with a seventh-inning single, and Lackey allowed three hits over nine scoreless innings in leading Los Angeles over Oakland 1-0.

-Matt Kemp, Dodgers, hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and scored four times for Los Angeles in a 4-3 win over Houston.

-Gregg Zaun, Orioles, homered and drove in four runs, helping send Baltimore to a 10-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.

        SAD DAY

Sue Burns, a part owner of the San Francisco Giants who was close friends with home run king Barry Bonds, died early Sunday of complications from cancer, the team said. She was 58. Burns was diagnosed with the disease July 10 and missed Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter for the Giants that night - a rare absence from the ballpark. "We all have heavy hearts,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. "Sue was such a beautiful lady who gave us her unwavering support all the time.''

        QUICK ONE

The Angels needed 10 innings to beat the A's 1-0, but it came in a breezy 2 hours, 17 minutes, thanks to fine pitching performances by Oakland's Brett Anderson and Los Angeles ace John Lackey. Anderson allowed two hits over eight innings, taking a perfect game into the seventh, and Lackey pitched three-hit ball for nine innings.

        SWAPS

The Brewers acquired second baseman Felipe Lopez from Arizona for two minor leaguers, giving Milwaukee a much-needed threat at the top of the order. Milwaukee has been without starting second baseman Rickie Weeks after he had season-ending surgery on his wrist in May. The 29-year-old Lopez was hitting .301 with six homers, 25 RBIs and six stolen bases in 85 games in his first season with the Diamondbacks. He can become a free agent after the season. ... San Diego acquired infielder Oscar Salazar from Baltimore for right-handed reliever Cla Meredith.

        SWING AND A MISS

The AL-worst Indians struck out 12 times in a 5-3 loss to Seattle, putting their season total at 709. They became the third team, following Texas and Tampa Bay, to fan 700 times this season.

        FANTASTIC PHILLY

Unbeaten rookie J.A. Happ allowed five hits in seven innings, and the Phillies extended their longest winning streak since 2006 to eight games by beating Florida 5-0 - their 12th victory in 13 games. Happ (7-0) also singled with two outs to start a three-run rally in the second. The Phillies have won eight in a row in Miami.

        STATS

The Yankees' Mariano Rivera issued his fourth walk in 40 innings this season before finishing for his 26th save in 27 opportunities and third of the series against Detroit. ... DeWayne Wise hit his first homer since Sept. 19, 2008, for the Chicago White Sox in a 10-2 loss to Baltimore. ... The Royals stranded 13 and went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position during a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay. ... Adam Dunn hit his 24th homer but Washington dropped to 0-4 under new manager Jim Riggleman with an 11-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

        STAR WATCHING

Matt Cain held the Pirates to one run over seven innings, outpitching All-Star replacement Zach Duke in San Francisco's 4-3 victory at Pittsburgh. Cain (11-3) was pitching for the first time since he was hit on the right arm by a line drive July 11, making him unavailable for the All-Star game due to a bruised elbow. Cain was replaced on the NL squad by Duke (8-9).

        SIGNED

Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek agreed to a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins, providing a possible veteran presence later in the season. Grudzielanek has played 14 major league seasons with five teams. He ended last season on the disabled list for Kansas City after hurting his ankle Aug. 1. A .290 career hitter, Grudzielanek played 1,772 games for Montreal (1995-98), the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2002), Chicago Cubs (2003-04), St. Louis (2005) and the Royals (2006-08). He was an All-Star in 1996 and won a Gold Glove in 2006.

        BREAKING LOOSE

Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer keyed a seven-run fourth inning and the Cubs completed a four-game sweep at Washington with an 11-3 rout. Jake Fox had three hits and a career-high four RBIs. Soriano's 16th home run, his second in two games after a drought of 120 at-bats, began the biggest inning of the season for Chicago.

        SPEAKING

"The only thing that was in my mind as soon as the bat made contact was to catch it. Just like a dog chasing after a Frisbee.'' - Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki on his leaping catch at the fence that ended a 5-3 victory at Cleveland.

        Today's birthday: Ben Molina 35.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-160, 8)

Most fans will look at the string of zeros Jonathan Sanchez has put up lately - a no-hitter in his last start, 12 scoreless innings overall, the opponent failing to score in the last three games where he has appeared.

Here's a different string of zeros - the number of wins Sanchez has in seven road starts this season, going 0-7 with a 6.27 ERA.

While the mandatory Vander Meer Watch will be on Sanchez, there's something else to keep an eye on. The three games this season in which he's allowed five or more walks have all come on the road, and five of the seven homers he served up have also been away from home.

              Pick: Atlanta -160

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates (-116, 9.5)

Does anybody want to play for the Pirates?

Trapped in another season of going nowhere, the Pirates are last in the NL Central and haven't finished above .500 since their last postseason appearance in 1992. This season-long skid was punctuated by Sunday's news that Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson rejected multi-year contract extensions without making a counteroffer.

"They are not interested in even the foundation that we've laid," Pirates GM Neal Huntington told MLB.com. "The response is such that they don't even feel we are in the same ballpark because they feel like years, dollars, the foundation is so far off their expectations that it's not worth countering."

This will step up efforts by Huntington to trade Sanchez and Wilson, who could be free agents at the end of the season. Sanchez can activate a 2010 option with plate appearances, but Wilson will be gone.

Pittsburgh's first sign of surrender this season came with the June trade of young outfielder Nate McLouth to Atlanta. At the time, several Pirates players, including Sanchez, questioned the team's commitment to winning.

Now the Pirates take the latest business bombshell into a home game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, who have beaten Pittsburgh 17 straight times.

              Pick: Milwaukee +108

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Rodrigo Lopez (Philadelphia Phillies)

How long Lopez remains in the rotation may depend on two factors: When Pedro Martinez says he is ready to pitch, and how well Lopez continues to pitch.

The right-hander missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery in 2007 and began this year in the minors. But in both his starts this month, Lopez has pitched effectively, limiting baserunners and keeping the ball inside Citizens Bank Park.

Last week, the Phillies signed Martinez, who could bump Lopez from the rotation. Lopez, who left his last start with an achy shoulder, would have two or three starts before Martinez is expected to be ready.

"Whatever happens, I think it's something I can't control," Lopez told the team's website. "But trying to pitch good and being healthy, that's the thing I can control."

                Sean O'Sullivan (Los Angeles Angels)

The rookie right-hander has a brief body of work since being called up from the minor leagues earlier this year. But he hasn't lost yet and neither have the Angels when he takes the mound.

The team has won all four starts made by the 21-year-old O'Sullivan, who has picked up two wins and worked at least five innings each outing. He has helped stabilize a rotation hit hard by injuries this season.

O'Sullivan has also received 28 runs of support, although, he has not needed nearly that much. He worked as a favorite for the first time in his last start.

                Returning

                Jason Schmidt (Los Angeles Dodgers)

There are comebacks, and then there are comebacks like the one Schmidt is making. Schmidt hasn't pitched in the majors since June 16, 2007. He has been out of baseball for so long that baseball-reference.com has a mention of his "final game" on his career stats page.

The 36-year-old right-hander was a three-time All-Star and twice finished in the top five in NL Cy Young voting in five-plus seasons in San Francisco, going 78-37. He signed with the Dodgers after the 2006 season but made just six starts before needing right shoulder surgery for a torn labrum and frayed biceps tendon.

In five starts at Triple-A Albuquerque this year, Schmidt was 2-0 with a 3.94 ERA.

"Velocity-wise, we all know he's not what he once was," Dodgers manager Joe Torre told the Los Angeles Times. "His experience in knowing how to pitch is something that he's going to have really rely on."

                Slumping

                Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals)

A month ago, Meche was riding a streak of 16 scoreless innings. In his next start, he was pounded for nine runs while getting just 10 outs and has been in a freefall ever since.

The Royals are 1-4 in the last five games started by Meche, who during that span has a staggering WHIP of 2.07 (31 hits, 18 walks, 23 2-3 IP).

Even more alarming is the nine homers Meche has given up in that stretch. He allowed just two in his first 14 starts.

                Kyle Lohse (St. Louis Cardinals)

You can't spell Lohse without l-o-s-e.

The Cardinals are 1-6 in the last seven starts by the right-hander, who spent more than a month on the disabled list with a forearm injury before returning July 12. The lone win in that stretch was over punchless Kansas City nearly two months ago.

Lohse has also been prone to the long ball. He gave up one homer in 32 innings in April but has allowed seven in his last 29 1-3 innings. The total has gone over in five of his last six starts.

Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Cubs: A four-game series with the lowly Washington Nationals was just what the Cubs needed to start the second half. Alfonso Soriano smacked his second homer in as many days to spark a seven-run fourth inning and rookie Jake Fox drove in a career-high four RBIs, three on his fifth homer, to power the Cubs to an 11-3 victory Sunday and a sweep of the Nationals. Chicago outscored Washington 26-11 over the four games. Ted Lilly (9-6, 3.18 ERA) was pushed back from Saturday's scheduled start because of inflammation in his left knee. He picked up his 100th career win in his last start against the Cards by going eight innings and allowing just four hits. It was Lilly’s 14th quality start this year. However, Lilly is just 3-5 with a 4.66 ERA on the road compared to 6-1 with a 1.86 ERA at Wrigley Field. Over his last 54 2/3 innings, Lilly has walked seven and fanned 49. The Cubs are 12-6 in Lilly’s 18 starts this season. This will be Lilly’s first start against the Phils this year.

The Under is 21-9 in the Cubs’ last 30 road encounters.

                          Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Phillies (-$1.15 O/U 9.5): The Phils extended their season-high winning streak to eight games with Sunday’s 5-0 blanking of the Marlins. The win enabled the Phils to improve to 51-38 and extend their lead in the NL East to seven games. However, the Phils are just 22-23 in their first 45 home contests. Facing veteran southpaw Ted Lilly shouldn’t be much of a concern, as the Phils are 21-11 against lefty starters this season. Rodrigo Lopez will get the ball for the Phils in Monday’s opener. The journeyman right-hander left his start on July 8 after five innings because of right-shoulder inflammation. But after some rest with the All-Star break, the Mexico native is ready to make his third start of the season in a fluctuating No. 5 spot of the Phillies' rotation. In 11 1/3 innings this season, Lopez has allowed four runs, and the Phillies have won both of those games. In his lone career start against the Cubs, Lopez - pitching on 11 days' rest for the Rockies- yielded eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The Under is 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings between the Phils and Cubs.

                          Key injuries - None.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                            Len’s Top Five

Happy Monday everyone, here's my Top 5 for July 20, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                            1. Quick Hits

Stewart Cink wins his first major after beating Tom Watson in a 4 hole playoff at the British Open. Watson, at age 59, had a chance to win in regulation but missed an 8 foot putt on 18.
The Yankees sweep Detroit and close to within one game of Boston.
The Phillies are the hottest team in baseball. 8 straight wins, and a 7 game lead in the NL East.
The bloom is off the rose. David Beckham was booed by his hometown soccer fans. One fan had to be restrained from going after Beckham, who apparently motioned to the fan to "come on."
Don Zimmer came to Yankee Stadium yesterday for Old Timers' Day. Time heals all wounds. I once asked Zim what he would do if George Steinbrenner ever called him, he said: "Hang up!"

                            2. Oops!

I loved the New York Times piece last week that showed the 4 outfits Tiger Woods would be wearing at the British Open. Nike planned his wardrobe a year in advance. They didn't count on one small item, Tiger not making the cut. So two of the outfits weren't needed. In our golf game we call what Nike did, poultry inventory. (Counting your chickens....)

                            3. Let's Go the to Videotape

NASA admits they erased their tape of man landing on the moon 40 years ago today.
Actually, it's not that unusual. Remember all the early Johnny Carson shows that were lost? And then there was Super Bowl I. It was televised by both CBS and NBC. And none of those tapes exist either. You can land a man on the moon, but saving video tape?

                            4. Uncle Walter

We ate dinner, and then watched Walter Cronkite. That was the routine. When I wanted to go into broadcasting my dad thought it was a bad idea. He said "there's only one Walter Cronkite." I once met him at a Giants game. I was taken with what a regular guy he was. Here was the "most trusted man in America," and he was just a guy, talking about guy stuff. It's true. There was only one Walter Cronkite, and it feels like we've lost a member of our family.

                            5. Cornering the Market

Great idea. Bet every combination at the dog track and get rich. Why didn't I think of it? They were offering a jackpot of around $180-thousand at the track in Sheffield England. So a couple bet every combo of 6 dogs in 6 races....and it only cost... around $77-thousand. Bingo, an easy score of around a hundred grand. Except for one tiny glitch. Two others also had the winning combination, so the jackpot got split 3 ways. The couple won $55-thousand, for a net loss of roughly $22-thousand. Hey they won some, they lost some.
