    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, July 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox play host to the Orioles, the Astros take on the Dodgers, and the Cardinals get a visit from the Diamondbacks.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Chicago's John Danks (7-6, 3.91 ERA) will take the mound on Friday night as his team begins their second-half schedule at home against the Orioles and Jason Berken (1-6, 5.87 ERA). Lefthander Danks had to settle for a no-decision last time out, surrendering four earned runs on four hits over 5 2-3 innings of work against the Twins. Righthander Berken gave up two earned runs over 5 2-3 innings vs. the Blue Jays last time out, and Baltimore has lost his last four starts.

Also on the American League schedule for Friday: Seattle at Cleveland, Detroit at the Yankees, Boston at Toronto, Minnesota at Texas, the Angels at Oakland, and Tampa Bay at Kansas City. James Shields (6-6, 3.42 ERA) will get the ball for the Rays in that contest; the righthander took a no-decision against the A's (three earned runs over 6 1-3 innings) last time out. Zack Greinke (10-5, 2.12 ERA) will try to end his two-game losing skid when he hits the hill for the Royals.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Roy Oswalt (5-4, 3.85 ERA) vs. Chad Billingsley (9-4, 3.38 ERA) when the Astros continue their road series against the Dodgers on Friday night. Righthander Oswalt is 2-0 with a no-decision in his last three trips to the mound, surrendering just five earned runs over 23 innings of work. Righthander Billingsley hasn't picked up a win since beating Texas in interleague play on June 14, but he's given up three or fewer earned runs in seven of his last 10 outings.

Rounding out the National League schedule for Friday: San Francisco at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Washington, Philadelphia at Florida, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, the Mets at Atlanta, Colorado at San Diego, and Arizona at St. Louis. The Diamondbacks will turn to Jon Garland (5-8, 4.53 ERA) on Friday night, with the team 2-0 in his last two outings. Chris Carpenter (7-3, 2.47 ERA) is slated to start for the Cards, and he's also picked up a victory in each of his last two starts.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League offers up a single game on Friday night, with Toronto at Calgary. The Argonauts were tagged with their first loss of the season last time out, falling 46-36 to Saskatchewan; Toronto is 1-1 both straight-up and against-the-spread. The Stampeders have fallen to both the Alouettes and Blue Bombers this year, and they're 0-2 SU and ATS. Oddsmakers have the Stamps listed as 7-point home favorites for Friday night, with the total sitting at 55 points.

Finally, the WNBA gets back on the court on Friday night with Connecticut at San Antonio, Seattle at Sacramento, and Atlanta at Indiana. The Fever are riding a 10-game winning streak into their matchup with the Dream, knocking off Chicago 84-74 on Wednesday night to extend that stretch to double digits. Tammy Sutton-Brown poured in 22 points for the Fever, while Ebony Hoffman added 18 points. Atlanta also won Wednesday night, beating Minnesota 91-77 in a road matchup.

          Week 3 CFL games

          Friday, July 17

Toronto (1-1) @ Calgary (0-2)-- Not much defense for Stampeders this year, giving up 40 points at home to Montreal, 42 at Winnipeg a week ago, when they also had 14 penalties for 132 yards- they have given up 319 rushing yards in two games. Argos were down 37-13 at half in home loss to Roughriders last week- they had 17 penalties for 141 yards.

          Saturday, July 18

Montreal (2-0) @ Saskatchewan (2-0)-- High-powered Alouettes scored 40-50 points in their first two games, completing 24-32 passes in both games (255-339 yards), while running ball for 294 yards. Riders are also 2-0, with 11 takeaways which offset their eight turnovers--they've been called for 21 penalties in two games-- they let up in 2nd half last week.

Winnipeg (1-1) @ Hamilton (1-1)-- Bombers have 305 rushing yards so far in two games, but they've completed less than half their passes both games, with former Louisville QB Lefors under center. TiCats got waxed at home by Toronto in opener, then went out west and shocked Lions as 13-point underdog. Favorites are 2-6 vs spread in CFL this season.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 3 preview and picks
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Friday, July 17

              Toronto Argonauts (1-1) at Calgary Stampeders (0-2) -7.5, 55

The Stampeders have been atrocious so far this season. Their offense has struggled, but should get back on track against the weakest defense in the East.

Expect the Argos to take advantage of Calgary’s difficulties containing the running game. The Stampeders are dead last in the CFL in stopping the run.

The Alouettes and the Blue Bombers piled up 319 yards on the ground against the Stamps in the first two games of 2009. Jamal Robertson, Toronto’s lead running back, gained 214 yards rushing in two games, averaging close to nine yards per carry.

Despite all that, I’m still picking the home side. I can’t see a Calgary team this talented starting the campaign 0-3.

              Pick: Calgary

              Saturday, July 18

              Montreal Alouettes (2-0) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-0) +4.5, 57.5

The only two unbeaten teams left in the CFL face each other Saturday afternoon in Regina. The Roughriders won their first two against the Lions and the Argonauts, but neither opponent has legitimate Grey Cup hopes for 2009.

The Als, on the other hand, rolled over the two West foes who are considered real contenders. Montreal showed it still has one of the deadliest offenses in the CFL and a much more efficient defence than last season. Running back Wes Cates, who missed the Riders’ first two games recovering from offseason shoulder injury, will probably be in the lineup. Hugh Charles filled in admirably in his absence, but Saskatchewan is a better team when Cates is on the backfield.

The Roughriders are always tough to beat in Regina, but I think Montreal is good enough to win and cover the number.

              Pick: Montreal

              Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-1) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-1) +1, 54

A Winnipeg scout was ejected on Tuesday after being caught taking notes during Hamilton’s practice. The news has created a Spygate-like controversy north of the border. But honestly, who wants to spy on the Ticats?

This will be a running back showdown between Winnipeg’s Fred Reid and CFL Offensive player of the week DeAndra’ Cobb. The Tiger-Cats will have more difficulty stopping Reid than Winnipeg will against Cobb. MLB Barrin Simpson and LB Siddeeq Shabazz have been impressive and Winnipeg’s defense already has eight takeaways after two games.

              Pick: Winnipeg

              Last week: 1-3

              Season: 3-5

                  STARS

                  Thursday

-Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez, Phillies. Howard hit his 200th career home run and Ibanez homered twice in Philadelphia's 4-0 win at Florida.

-Chipper Jones, Braves, hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning of a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets.

-Prince Fielder, Brewers, hit a three-run homer to lead Milwaukee to a 9-6 victory at Cincinnati.

-Derrek Lee, Cubs, had three hits, including a homer, in Chicago's 6-2 win at Washington.

-Clint Barmes and Seth Smith, Rockies. Barmes hit a three-run homer and Smith added a two-run shot to lead Colorado to a 10-1 victory over San Diego.

                  WELCOME BACK TO MANNYWOOD

Slugger Manny Ramirez played at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night for the first time since the end of his 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy. Ramirez arrived about five hours before the team opened a 10-game homestand against Houston. He finished 1 for 4 in the Dodgers' 3-0 loss.

                  SLUGGING 200

Ryan Howard hit his 200th career home run, reaching the milestone in fewer games than any player in major league history. The Phillies' slugger achieved the feat in his 658th game, hitting his 23rd homer of the season in the sixth inning of Philadelphia's 4-0 win at Florida. Ralph Kiner was previously the fastest player to reach 200 home runs. He did it in 706 games.

                  STRONG STARTS

The Phillies' Jamie Moyer allowed one hit in seven innings of a 4-0 win at Florida. The veteran left-hander walked one and struck out four to improve to 13-2 in his career against the Marlins. ... The Indians' Cliff Lee pitched a nine-hitter in a 4-1 victory over Seattle for his second complete game of the season. The left-hander hadn't won since a three-hit shutout against St. Louis on June 14, a game in which he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

                  ROGER WHO?

Former Houston-area gym owner Kelly Blair says he never supplied Roger Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs and is looking forward to meeting with a grand jury investigating whether Clemens lied to Congress. Blair said Thursday night that he's never met Clemens, any members of the Clemens' family or anyone representing the former pitcher. Blair, who received a subpoena on Tuesday and will testify before a grand jury in Washington on Aug. 4, is the former owner of 1-on-1 Elite Personal Fitness in Pasadena.

                  A'S BEATER

The Angels' Ervin Santana ended a three-start losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Athletics and improved his record to 10-1 with a 1.34 ERA against Oakland.

                  SIGNING

The Cubs signed former Toronto closer B.J. Ryan to a minor league deal. Released by the Blue Jays earlier this month, the 33-year-old Ryan will first report to the Cubs' spring training complex in Mesa, Ariz. If all goes well, he'll join Triple-A Iowa.

                  ON THE MEND

Padres right-hander Jake Peavy had a protective boot removed from his right ankle and will begin a rehabilitation program. Peavy, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon in the ankle, threw for the first time since going on the DL and said that he feels well.

                  MOVING

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies plan to move their spring training operations to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Phoenix in 2011. Under terms of an agreement announced Thursday, the tribe has agreed to build an 11,000-seat ballpark and a complex that includes 12 practice fields, training facilities and offices. It is believed to be the first major league spring training facility on tribal land. The deal is for 25 years with options to extend the pact.

                  TAKING ANOTHER LOOK

Brewers right-hander Dave Bush was sent for another medical exam after a poor showing in his latest rehabilitation start. Bush has been on the disabled list since June 23 with a small tear in his right triceps. He made his second medical rehab start on Wednesday for Double-A Huntsville and gave up six hits and five runs in only three innings, struggling to throw strikes. The Brewers decided on Thursday to have him checked again.

                  SEEING GEORGE

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner spent three hours in his office at the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., and said he was feeling well. Steinbrenner, who celebrated his 79th birthday on July 4, has kept a low profile since turning over the daily operations of the Yankees to his sons, Hank and Hal, almost two years ago.

BATTER UP IN THE HOLY LAND?

Israeli baseball authorities say they've reached a deal giving a group of American businessmen a two-year option to operate a pro league in Israel. The group is headed by Marvin Goldklang, a minority owner of the New York Yankees, and Jeff Rosen, an American businessman who owns the Haifa Heat in Israel's pro basketball league. Israeli baseball official Nathan Pomerantz says the Americans are conducting "due diligence'' on the venture. He hopes the league will be ready for play in 2010 or 2011. The announcement comes two years after a separate group of Americans tried to bring professional baseball to Israel. The Israel Baseball League folded after one season.

                  SPEAKING

"There's positives to take out of it but at the end of the day we're not here to just get positives. They're paying us stinking boatloads of money to go out there and win baseball games and we've got to be better. We're not going to make this ship right in three hours.'' - Nationals catcher Josh Bard after Washington lost its first game under Jim Riggleman, 6-2 to the Cubs.

                      Len’s Top Five

                      Friday, July 17

                      Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for July 17, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                      1. Quick Hits

What's more surprising after the first round of the British Open? Soon to be 60-year old Tom Watson shooting 5-under, or Tiger Woods not breaking par (1-over) on a beautiful summer day in Scotland? The weather got much more Scottish for the start of the second round today, and scores were all over the place.

The second half of the baseball season is underway. As expected Manny Ramirez got treated like royalty coming back from his drug suspension in L.A. He laughed, "This is my town." He went 1-4 as the Dodgers lost to Houston 3-0.

The great David Beckham played at Giants Stadium last night and the fans mostly yawned. His team won, but empty seats abounded. I guess he's not the "American soccer savior" after all.

                      2. Kiss and Tell

Wow, I can hear it now. Tennis player Richard Gasquet got cleared of his drug suspension. They bought his story that the cocaine in his body came from kissing a babe at a nightclub. What next, all the baseball players somehow got tainted by exchanging bodily fluids with steroid crazed groupies?

                      3. Teddy Ballgame

I caught HBO's Ted Williams documentary. His prickliness with the Boston media was legendary. I got to interview him several times long after his playing days. He was the best interview.....ever. Forceful, insightful, colorful, and when he talked about hitting, mesmerizing. That's how I'll remember him. Too bad his kids screwed things up so badly after he died fighting over his remains.

                      4. Friday Mailbag

When I pointed out that Mark McGwire was persona non grata at the All Star Game in St. Louis, A.B. tweeted: "Yeah but they still have the Big Mac sign in the stadium."
Editor's Note: They also still have Mark McGwire highway. Selective memory.

R.K. suggests that Mariano Rivera's record for 4 All Star saves may never be broken. After all, he had to be picked by 4 different managers, with 4 different leads, to be the closer.
Editor's Note: Can't argue with that.

D.R. sounded bored this week. "The day after the MLB All Star game, is Vacuum Day, the one day of every year when there are no sports: no baseball, football, hockey or basketball.
Editor's Note: Maybe that's a good thing. (Christmas Eve is another.)

B.L. noted: "Woody Hayes did have a bit of a temper, and yes he was a little too liberal with the use of his hands, but as a 1969 OSU graduate I am proud to say that we covered every football game's spread my senior year."
Editor's Note: You certainly have your priorities in order.

                      5. Genius of the Week

A 13-year old Polish girl got home from her Egyptian vacation with a souvenir. She was pregnant. Her mom says she didn't meet any boys on vaco, so she decided that her daughter got pregnant thanks to some stray sperm floating around the hotel pool. Naturally, she's suing the hotel. Is that what they mean by water boarding?

Happy Birthday: Trots. 4-time Islander Stanley Cup Champ Bryan Trottier. 53.

Bonus Birthday: Funny lady Phyllis Diller. 92.

Today in Sports: The Bronx Zoo. Reggie Jackson refuses to bunt so Yankee manager Billy Martin suspends him. Good times. 1978.

Bonus Event: The left coast version. Disneyland opens. 1955.
