    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, July 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Golf's best try to fend off Tiger at Turnberry, while Major League Baseball returns from its break with a partial set of contests.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

There are just two games on the American League schedule for Thursday, with Seattle at Cleveland and the Angels at Oakland. The battle of AL West rivals will see Los Angeles' Ervin Santana (1-5, 7.81 ERA) taking on Oakland's Dallas Braden (7-7, 3.12 ERA). Righthander Santana has lost each of his last three starts, allowing 15 earned runs in 13 2-3 innings. Lefthander Braden has won his last two starts, and he's given up three or fewer earned runs in 17 of 18 outings.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The National League offers up six games on Thursday, with the Cubs at Washington, the Mets at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Florida, Colorado at San Diego, and Houston at the Dodgers. The Astros will send Wandy Rodriguez (8-6, 2.96 ERA) to the mound to take on the Dodgers' Randy Wolf (4-3, 3.45 ERA). Houston is 4-0 in Rodriguez's last four outings, while Wolf has surrendered just two or fewer earned runs in five of his last six trips to the hill.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Tiger Woods is pegged as the 5/2 Vegas favorite to pick up a victory this week in the British Open at Turnberry in Scotland. The world's top player will be looking for his 15th win in a major tournament at Turnberry; his last major victory was at the 2008 U.S. Open, and he last won the British Open in back-to-back years in 2005 and 2006. Woods won the AT&T National in his last outing two weeks ago.

Second on the odds list for the event is Sergio Garcia at 15/1, with each of Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey, and Padraig Harrington pegged at 20/1. Harrington won the British Open in each of the past two seasons, but has missed the cut in four of his last five PGA Tour events. Retief Goosen, Ian Poulter, Jim Furyk, Geoff Ogilvy, and Rory McIlroy make up the next tier of contenders at 25/1 odds.

Finally, the Canadian Football League kicks off its third week of action on Thursday night with British Columbia visiting Edmonton. The Lions have stumbled out of the gate at 0-2 both straight-up and against-the-spread, while the Eskimos are 1-1 SU (and 0-2 ATS) heading into Thursday night. Oddsmakers have Edmonton listed as a 4.5-point home favorite, with the total pegged at 52.5.

Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on All-Star festivities.....

      13) Slightly different hitting approaches in the All-Star Game-- awful lot of guys swinging at first pitch- thats how you get games that last 2:31.

      12) Some fans in Anaheim aren't thrilled Chone Figgins got summoned to St Louis at the last minute, then never got in the game. Should be easy to get Figgins in the game- he can play just about any position.

      11) To me, its incredibly stupid that the outcome of the All-Star Game decides home field in World Series-- I've said this before, but whatever leagues wins interleague play should get home field in World Series.

      10) Tim Wakefield didn't get in because of the home field in World Series rule-- knuckleball pitcher would be risky for an inning, since his catcher doesn't have that much experience catching one (Twins have RA Dickey, but still......). Joe Maddon stuck with the power pitchers, and won.

      9) I'm guessing Derek Jeter is a good guy, and he's a first ballot entrant in the Hall of Fame, but does FOX have to show him every 90 seconds in the dugout, after after he's been taken out of games? Its like there's a timer in production truck; when it runs out, they show Jeter on camera.

      8) American League has now outscored NL teams 76-48 in last thirteen All-Star Games, one of which was a tie. AL won the other twelve.

      7) President Obama was fifth sitting US President to throw out the first ball in an All-Star Game-- the NL had won the previous four games.

      6) Let me get this straight-- Lance Armstrong dumped Sheryl Crow? He must have been spending too much time on that bicycle.

      5) The night after the All-Star Game is one of the worst TV nights of the year-- how about showing a Japanese baseball game on TV? Would be an interesting thing to see what their games are like.

      4) When the NBA has its 3-point contest, they bring in specialists to be in the contest-- Jason Kapono, Fred Hoiberg, Dell Curry-- why doesn't Home Run Derby do the same thing? Russell Branyan, Adam Dunn are sluggers who aren't All-Stars, but wouldn't they be great in HR Derby?

      3) Cal Ripken Jr broke his nose at 1996 All-Star Game, waiting in the outfield for the team picture to be taken. Got hit by a ball hit in batting practice by a National League player.

      2) Think fans in Oakland were on edge of their seats, waiting for Andrew Bailey to get in the game? Or Pirate fans for Freddy Sanchez? 27 guys got in the game for the NL, they couldn't get the only Pirate on the field?

      1) San Diego's Heath Bell had never made an All-Star team at any level, not tee ball, Little League, Babe Ruth, high school. Must be some really good baseball played in Oceanside, CA, where Bell grew up.

            Write-up

            Week 3 CFL games

            Thursday, July 16

BC Lions (0-2) @ Edmonton (1-1)-- Brutal start to year for Lions, who lost first two games by combined total of seven points, including losing to 13-point underdog Hamilton last week. Edmonton was -3 in turnovers in both of its first two games; they've been outrushed 280-95 so far this season. Eskimos have been outscored 46-20 in second half of games.

            Friday, July 17

Toronto (1-1) @ Calgary (0-2)-- Not much defense for Stampeders this year, giving up 40 points at home to Montreal, 42 at Winnipeg a week ago, when they also had 14 penalties for 132 yards- they have given up 319 rushing yards in two games. Argos were down 37-13 at half in home loss to Roughriders last week- they had 17 penalties for 141 yards.

            Saturday, July 18

Montreal (2-0) @ Saskatchewan (2-0)-- High-powered Alouettes scored 40-50 points in their first two games, completing 24-32 passes in both games (255-339 yards), while running ball for 294 yards. Riders are also 2-0, with 11 takeaways which offset their eight turnovers--they've been called for 21 penalties in two games-- they let up in 2nd half last week.

Winnipeg (1-1) @ Hamilton (1-1)-- Bombers have 305 rushing yards so far in two games, but they've completed less than half their passes both games, with former Louisville QB Lefors under center. TiCats got waxed at home by Toronto in opener, then went out west and shocked Lions as 13-point underdog. Favorites are 2-6 vs spread in CFL this season.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 3 preview and picks
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Thursday, July 16

                B.C. Lions (0-2) at Edmonton Eskimos (1-1) -4.5, 53[/b]

The Eskimos’ offensive line got crushed last week in Montreal, allowing the Alouettes to sack QB Ricky Ray six times. The same thing may happen against the B.C. Lions, who registered seven sacks in their first two games.

The Lions have their own issues on the O-line after releasing import left tackle Walter Stith earlier this week. He will be replaced by Daren Heerspink who was signed 10 days ago. Can he do a better job protecting Buck Pierce in his first game with the Lions?

Expect both defensive units to dominate this game by neutralizing the opposing quarterback. This game will be a close one, but the loss of kicker Paul McCallum might be too much for B.C. to overcome.

                Pick: Edmonton

                Friday, July 17

                Toronto Argonauts (1-1) at Calgary Stampeders (0-2) -7.5, 55

The Stampeders have been atrocious so far this season. Their offense has struggled, but should get back on track against the weakest defense in the East.

Expect the Argos to take advantage of Calgary’s difficulties containing the running game. The Stampeders are dead last in the CFL in stopping the run.

The Alouettes and the Blue Bombers piled up 319 yards on the ground against the Stamps in the first two games of 2009. Jamal Robertson, Toronto’s lead running back, gained 214 yards rushing in two games, averaging close to nine yards per carry.

Despite all that, I’m still picking the home side. I can’t see a Calgary team this talented starting the campaign 0-3.

                Pick: Calgary

                Saturday, July 18

                Montreal Alouettes (2-0) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-0) +4.5, 57.5

The only two unbeaten teams left in the CFL face each other Saturday afternoon in Regina. The Roughriders won their first two against the Lions and the Argonauts, but neither opponent has legitimate Grey Cup hopes for 2009.

The Als, on the other hand, rolled over the two West foes who are considered real contenders. Montreal showed it still has one of the deadliest offenses in the CFL and a much more efficient defence than last season. Running back Wes Cates, who missed the Riders’ first two games recovering from offseason shoulder injury, will probably be in the lineup. Hugh Charles filled in admirably in his absence, but Saskatchewan is a better team when Cates is on the backfield.

The Roughriders are always tough to beat in Regina, but I think Montreal is good enough to win and cover the number.

                Pick: Montreal

                Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-1) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-1) +1, 54

A Winnipeg scout was ejected on Tuesday after being caught taking notes during Hamilton’s practice. The news has created a Spygate-like controversy north of the border. But honestly, who wants to spy on the Ticats?

This will be a running back showdown between Winnipeg’s Fred Reid and CFL Offensive player of the week DeAndra’ Cobb. The Tiger-Cats will have more difficulty stopping Reid than Winnipeg will against Cobb. MLB Barrin Simpson and LB Siddeeq Shabazz have been impressive and Winnipeg’s defense already has eight takeaways after two games.

                Pick: Winnipeg

                Last week: 1-3

                Season: 3-5

                  PRESIDENT'S PITCH

President Barack Obama threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the All-Star game, barely reaching the plate. St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols helped the president, moving up on the plate and reaching out to scoop the low toss. Obama began the day by greeting Wimbledon champion Serena Williams at the White House, then picked up Hall of Famer Willie Mays in Michigan for the flight to St. Louis.

                  SPEAKING

"It was definitely probably the best catch I ever made.'' - Tampa Bay outfielder Carl Crawford on robbing Colorado slugger Brad Hawpe of a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning of the American League's 4-3 victory over the NL in the All-Star game in St. Louis.
