    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, July 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: NASCAR burns some rubber at Chicagoland Speedway, the Yankees take on the Angels, and the Cubs play host to the Cards.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

Andy Pettitte (8-4, 4.53 ERA) will take on Jered Weaver (9-3, 3.15 ERA) on Saturday afternoon as the Yankees continue their road series against the Angels. Lefthander Pettitte was knocked around for six earned runs over six innings in a loss to the Blue Jays in his last trip to the mound; the Yankees had been 3-0 in his previous three starts. Righthander Weaver is coming off a win over the Rangers in which he gave up four runs (three earned) in seven innings pitched.

Also on the American League slate for Saturday: Oakland at Tampa Bay, Cleveland at Detroit, Toronto at Baltimore, the White Sox at Minnesota, Texas at Seattle, and Kansas City at Boston. The Royals will turn to Gil Meche (4-8, 4.14 ERA) in their road game against the BoSox, while Boston will give the ball to John Smoltz (0-2, 6.60 ERA). Righthander Smoltz has given up 11 earned runs over 15 innings so far for Boston, and the team is 0-3 when he takes the mound.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The Cardinals and Cubs will hit Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon for the second meeting of their pre-break series, with Brad Thompson (2-5, 4.92 ERA) battling Ted Lilly (8-6, 3.32 ERA). Righthander Thompson has been tagged with a loss in each of his last three starts, allowing 13 earned runs over 16 innings of work vs. the Reds, Giants, and Mets. Lefthander Lilly picked up a win in his start against the Brewers last time out, surrendering two earned runs in 6 1-3 innings.

Elsewhere around the National League on Saturday it'll be Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, Washington at Houston, the Dodgers at Milwaukee, Atlanta at Colorado, Florida at Arizona, San Diego at San Francisco, and Cincinnati at the Mets. The Reds will go with Johnny Cueto (8-5, 3.45 ERA) on Saturday; the righthander was blasted for nine earned runs in just 2-3 of an inning vs. the Phillies last time out. The Mets will counter with Johan Santana (9-7, 3.29 ERA).

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series stays under the lights on Saturday with the LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Jimmie Johnson is pegged as the 4/1 Vegas favorite to take the checkered flag in this event, with Kyle Busch just behind him on the odds list at 5/1. Bush is the defending LifeLock.com 400 champion. Series points leader Tony Stewart is listed in third at 7/1 odds to get the victory on Saturday night. Stewart won the event at Chicagoland Speedway back in 2007. Jeff Gordon (10/1) and Carl Edwards (12/1) round out the Top 5 on the odds list.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League wraps up the second week of its schedule on Saturday afternoon with Toronto hosting Saskatchewan. The Argonauts and Roughriders are both coming off Week 1 victories (both straight-up and against-the-spread), with Toronto beating Hamilton 30-17 and Saskatchewan getting past British Columbia 28-24. The oddsmakers like the Argos at home on Saturday afternoon, pegging them as 3-point favorites. The total for the contest is at 51.5.

Finally, there are four games on the WNBA's schedule for Saturday, with Los Angeles at Washington, Detroit at Connecticut, Atlanta at New York, and Phoenix at Sacramento. The Mercury continue to pay off for their backers at 9-4 SU and ATS on the season, although they're just 2-3 SU and ATS on the road. The Monarchs sit at 3-9 SU and 4-8 ATS through their first dozen contests this season. Sacramento has won and covered in two of their four home matchups.

      Write-up

      Saturday, July 11

Saskatchewan (1-0) @ Toronto (1-0)-- Roughriders also turned ball over six times last week, and had 128 penalty yards, but they escaped with a win, outgaining Lions 314-217. Hard to tell if Argos pulled in reins after crushing Hamilton in first half last week- they completed just 14 of 29 passes, which isn't good, but they didn't turn ball over either.

      Saturday, July 11

Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) at Toronto Argonauts (1-0)

This will probably be the most exciting game of the week - one where the winner will be decided in the last seconds of the fourth quarter, if not in overtime.

The Roughriders stunned bettors by beating B.C. last week and Darian Durant was more than instrumental in that win. But the Argos have an improved offensive line and QB Kerry Joseph has many good targets to choose from, starting with Arland Bruce III. Running back Jamal Robertson has also been impressive in Week 1.

Despite the nice victory against B.C., they are still too many question marks regarding the Roughriders to think they could win this one in Toronto. This being said, the spread between the winner and loser will probably be minimal.

      Prediction: Toronto -3

      Last week: 2-2

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at New York Mets (-141, 7.5)

The math for this one should be simple: Johnny Cueto + Johan Santana + Citi Field equals an under.

Plus, add in the fact neither team could do much damage against a pitching machine right now they way they are hitting the ball. New York has scored 10 runs its past six games, including getting shutout twice. The Mets also are 19-21-2 against the total this season at home.

The Reds, who benched leading home run hitter Jay Bruce on Thursday and Friday, also have scuffled at the dish. Cincinnati has crossed home plate just 19 times the past six games and is 16-27-1 against the total on the road this year.

This game figures to be a pitchers duel where runs will be almost impossible to come by. In Santana’s past 10 home starts, the under is 7-3.

        Pick: Under

Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee Brewers (+102, 9.5)

Things couldn’t get much worse for the Milwaukee Brewers. Players calling for trades, a pitching rotation decimated by injuries and, oh yeah, the team has lost six of 10 to fall 2.5 games off the pace in the NL Central.

And then the Dodgers come to town. Los Angeles has won 15 of its past 19 games on Saturday and Milwaukee just wants to put together a complete game at the plate and on the mound.

The Brewers have the 24th ranked team ERA (4.48) and is as mediocre as it gets on offense, hitting just .254 as team. Meantime, the Dodgers have scored the sixth-most runs in the league (432) and have the second-best ERA (3.52).

It will take a Herculean effort for the Brewers to win, but a victory for the Dodgers should be just another day at the park.

        Pick: Dodgers -110

          Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streaking

          Brad Bergesen (Baltimore Orioles)

The Orioles' 23 year old wasn’t regarded as one of the team’s top pitching prospects at the beginning of the season. But as manager Dave Trembley prepares to make good on his word to shake up the rotation after the All-Star break, Bergesen appears more than safe.

Bergesen (5-3, 3.59 ERA) has allowed more than two earned runs only twice in his past eight starts and no more than four in any outing since May 24. In his last start, Bergesen went six innings, striking out four and yielding just three earned runs opposite Seattle’s Jarrod Washburn, who finished with a complete-game one-hitter.

In his two starts before that he was even better, allowing a combined two earned runs over 14 innings.

"He just looks like he knows what he's doing,“ Trembley told the Associated Press. “He looks very comfortable on the mound. He works fast and he can locate."

          Glen Perkins (Minnesota Twins)

The 26-year-old hurler appears to finally be putting it all together for the Twins as the race in the AL Central Division heats up.

Perkins (4-4, 4.38 ERA) has been nearly impossible to score runs off of in his past two outings. In wins over the Royals and Cardinals he combined to allow only two earned runs over 14 innings while walking none.

"It was just keeping the ball down and letting it move," Perkins told the Associated Press. "You get through the game quick and there's not a lot of pitches that you waste."

          Slumping

          Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers)

The ace of the Texas Rangers staff has looked more like a joker his past two outings.

Millwood (8-6, 3.34 ERA) was tagged in consecutive outings against the Angles last week, allowing 13 earned runs in just 11 1-3 innings.

The outings were by far the worst of the season for Millwood, who followed up each of his previous poor performances with a solid outing until this point.

"I didn't hit my spots,” Millwood told the Associated Press. "When I tried to go away, it would drift over the middle of the plate. And when I didn't hit my spots, they hit those mistakes."

            Weekend MLB cheat sheet
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            (Published 7-9-09)

The final weekend on the basepaths before this year’s All-Star break finds teams in both circuits fighting hard for position. That’s because teams in first place at the break go on to make the playoffs 70 percent of the time.

FYI: teams that find themselves 1 to 5 games back at the break are just a 47 percent proposition to land a spot in the postseason while teams of more than five games out hold a less than 10 percent chance of gaining an extra paycheck.

With that, let’s take a look at four of the bigger series on tap this weekend. Remember, all results are within the series and all pitcher records are ‘team starts’ (the team’s record in games in which the pitcher starts) versus this opponent.

            Enjoy the weekend.

                SCOREBOARD

                Saturday, July 11

Atlanta at Colorado (8:10 p.m. EDT). First-time All-Star Jason Marquis (11-5) goes for his major league-leading 12th victory against the Braves' Jair Jurrjens (6-7).

                STARS

                Friday

-Jonathan Sanchez, Giants, pitched the majors' first no-hitter this season, recording a career-high 11 strikeouts in San Francisco's 8-0 win over the San Diego Padres.

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, hit his 32nd homer and drove in two runs in St. Louis' 8-3 victory at the Chicago Cubs.

-Dan Haren, Diamondbacks, tossed a four-hitter for his second career shutout, leading Arizona to an 8-0 win over the Florida Marlins.

-Jon Lester, Red Sox, pitched eight sharp innings to lead Boston to a 1-0 win against the Kansas City Royals.

-Jeff Niemann, Rays, struck out six in his second shutout of the season, lifting Tampa Bay to a 6-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

-Matt Kemp, Dodgers, hit a 10th-inning grand slam and made a fantastic catch for the final out in Los Angeles' 12-8 victory at Milwaukee.

-Bronson Arroyo, Reds, pitched a four-hitter for his second career shutout, helping Cincinnati to a 3-0 win at the New York Mets.

-Joe Nathan, Twins, worked a perfect ninth inning to preserve Minnesota's 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox, earning his 23rd save and lowering his ERA to 1.31.

-Kendry Morales and Erick Aybar, Angels, each hit a three-run homer to help Los Angeles rally for a 10-6 victory over the New York Yankees.

                THIS ONE'S FOR DAD

Jonathan Sanchez had quite the night in San Francisco's 8-0 victory over San Diego on Friday, pitching the majors' first no-hitter since Carlos Zambrano for the Chicago Cubs against Houston in Milwaukee on Sept. 14, 2008. Sanchez nearly tossed a perfect game - the only runner the Padres managed came on an error by third baseman Juan Uribe in the eighth. It was perfect timing, too; his father, Sirgfredo, was visiting from Puerto Rico and arrived in San Francisco on Thursday night.

PITCHING, PITCHING AND MORE GOOD PITCHING

Sanchez's no-hitter was just one in a slew of impressive pitching performances. Arizona's Dan Haren, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo and Tampa Bay's Jeff Niemann each threw a shutout. Boston's Jon Lester outpitched Brian Bannister in a 1-0 victory over Kansas City at Fenway Park. Brett Cecil worked six innings in Toronto's 2-0 win at Baltimore. Atlanta's Derek Lowe, Detroit's Edwin Jackson and Philadelphia's Joe Blanton also turned in solid efforts.

                QUITE THE CELEBRATION

Jayson Werth drove in two runs on the day he was named to his first All-Star team, helping the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Werth, picked by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel to replace injured New York outfielder Carlos Beltran on the NL roster, hit a two-run double in the third to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead.

                WHEELING & DEALING

The New York Mets traded Ryan Church to the Atlanta Braves for Jeff Francoeur and cash in a swap of outfielders who had fallen out of favor with their teams. ... The Kansas City Royals shored up their infield, acquiring Yuniesky Betancourt from the Seattle Mariners for a pair of minor league pitchers.

                QUITE A BONUS

It pays to be an All-Star. The initial 68 picks for Tuesday's game in St. Louis will receive $2.3 million in bonuses, with Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay leading the way at $125,000. Four players earned $100,000 each, and three of them were on the collapsing, injury-decimated New York Mets: center fielder Carlos Beltran, closer Francisco Rodriguez and pitcher Johan Santana.

                HURTING

Roy Oswalt left Houston's 6-5 victory over Washington in the seventh inning with numbness in two fingers on his right hand. ... Center fielder Josh Anderson and reliever Joel Zumaya both left Detroit's 5-1 victory against Cleveland with injuries. Anderson had a bruised right triceps after being hit with a Cliff Lee pitch. Zumaya threw just two pitches in the eighth before leaving with a cut on the top of his right thumb.

                SPEAKING

"On film he throws the ball hard, but it looks like he doesn't know where it's going. Today he looked exactly like he knew where it was going.'' - San Diego's Tony Gwynn Jr. after going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against San Francisco's Jonathan Sanchez in the majors' first no-hitter of the season, an 8-0 victory by the Giants.

                SEASONS

                July 11

1914 - Babe Ruth made his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox and received credit for a 4-3 victory over Cleveland. He was removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh, and Duffy Lewis' single led to the winning run.

1944 - Phil Cavaretta set an All-Star game record by reaching base safely five straight times - triple, single, three walks - to lead the NL to a 7-1 victory over the AL at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

1950 - The All-Star game returned to Comiskey Park, the site of the first game, and was won by the NL 4-3 on Red Schoendienst's 14th-inning home run off Ted Gray. It was the first extra-inning All-Star game, the first time the NL won at an AL park and the first All-Star game shown on network television.

1961 - Despite a record seven errors and pitcher Stu Miller getting blown off the Candlestick Park mound by a gale wind, the NL edged the AL 5-4 in the first of two All-Star games played that year.

1967 - Tony Perez's home run off Catfish Hunter in the 15th inning gave the NL a 2-1 win in the longest game in All-Star history. The game was played in California's Anaheim Stadium.

1973 - Jim Northrup of Detroit knocked in eight runs, batting in the leadoff spot, to lead the Tigers to a 14-2 romp over the Texas Rangers.

1978 - Steve Garvey keyed the NL's 7-3 All-Star victory at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium with a game-tying, two-run single and a triple that sparked a four-run eighth inning.

1985 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first pitcher in major league history to reach the 4,000-strikeout mark when he fanned New York's Danny Heep leading off the sixth inning. The Astros beat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings on Bill Doran's fifth hit of the game.

1995 - Jeff Conine's solo shot in the eighth inning gave the NL a 3-2 victory in the All-Star game. Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza also homered for the NL.

2000 - Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored as the AL defeated the NL 6-3 in the All-Star game. Jeter became the first Yankee to win the All-Star game MVP.

2006 - With the American League down to its final strike, Michael Young hit a two-run triple off Trevor Hoffman for a 3-2 victory that kept the Americans unbeaten in the All-Star game for the past decade. The NL took a 2-1 lead into the ninth behind David Wright's homer and some daring, old-style baserunning.

2008 - Chris Volstad became the sixth pitcher since 1971 to get a victory as a starter and a reliever in his first two big league appearances when he came within one out of a shutout in a 3-1 win over the Dodgers. Volstad was making his first career start, after throwing two innings of scoreless relief at Colorado on July 6.

Today's birthdays: Blaine Boyer 28; Javier Lopez 32.

                  This Day in Baseball

On July 11 in Baseball History...

1914 - Babe Ruth breaks in with Boston, pitching a 4-3 win over Cleveland. In his first Major League at-bat, Ruth strikes out. He will be 2-1 with Boston, spending most of the year in the International League at Providence.

1939 - With another Yankees-dominated lineup, the American League defeats the National League 3-1 in the seventh All-Star Game, at Yankee Stadium. Cincinnati outfielder Ival Goodman fractures his shoulder diving for a ball.

1944 - Phil Cavarretta of the Cubs sets an All-Star Game record by reaching base five successive times on a triple, single, and three walks in a 7-1 National League romp.

1950 - Making a leaping, off-the-wall catch of a Ralph Kiner drive, Ted Williams fractures his left elbow in the All-Star game at Chicago. Remaining in the game, he puts the American League ahead, 3-2, with an RBI single. Kiner's ninth-innving home run ties the game, and Red Schoendienst's blast in the fourteenth inning wins it.

1960 - Home runs by Ernie Banks and Del Crandall pace the National League to a 5-4 win over the American League at Kansas City's Municipal Stadium in the first of two All-Star Games. Bob Friend notches his second All-Star win.

1961 - Strong winds dominate the first All-Star Game of 1961. A capacity crowd sees pitcher Stu Miller blown off the mound in the ninth inning at Candlestick Park. A balk is called, and it enables the American League to forge a 3-3 tie before losing 5-4 in ten innings.

1962 - For the first time since 1938, when the Waner brothers pulled the trick, brothers Hank and Tommie Aaron homer in the same inning. Both were hit in the last of the ninth, and Hank's grand slam provides the winning margin in a 8-6 Braves win over the Cards.

1968 - Earl Weaver, who never played in the Majors, replaces Hank Bauer as manager of the Orioles. Weaver will become famous for his boisterous temper and run-ins with umpires, but his 1,480 wins and .583 winning percentage in Baltimore will land him in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

1976 - In a pre-game promotion at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, thirty-four couples are married at home plate. The nuptials are then followed by Championship Wrestling in an evening billed as 'Headlocks and Wedlocks.' The Braves then pin a 9-8 loss on the Mets.

1978 - At San Diego, the National League wins the All-Star Game 7-3. Steve Garvey singles and triples to earn the game's MVP trophy. Vida Blue starts for the National League, becoming the first pitcher to start for both leagues. Blue also started in 1971 and 1975 for the American League.

1985 - Nolan Ryan becomes the first pitcher to record 4,000 strikeouts, fanning Danny Heep in the sixth inning of Houston's 4-3 win over the Mets. Ryan finishes with eleven strikeouts in seven innings, but gets no decision.

1987 - Billy Ripken, 22, joins his brother Cal in the Orioles starting lineup in Baltimore's 2-1 loss to the Twins. Orioles manager Cal Ripken, Sr., is the first to manage two sons in the Majors.

1989 - Bo Jackson and Wade Boggs lead off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back home runs off Rick Reuschel to spark the American League to a 5-3 win in the All-Star Game at Anaheim Stadium. Jackson earns MVP honors.

                    Six-pack for Saturday

Here are bonuses that certain big leaguers got for being All-Stars:

-- $125,000 Halladay-- A going away present from the Blue Jays?

-- $100,000 Hunter-Beltran-FRodriguez-Santana-- How do guys who make what the three Mets make have this incentive in their contract? For what they make, they damn well better be All-Stars.

-- $75,000 Marquis-Lilly-- Colorado might have made the best signing of last winter-- Marquis has been a real ace for the Rockies.

-- $50,000-- 22 different guys get this amount for being All-Stars.

-- $20,000-- 20 other guys are calling their agents and wondering why they didn't have the $50,000 incentive in their contract.

                    -- $0-- 14 All-Stars don't have an All-Star incentive in their contract.

                    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a Friday night of baseball......

                    13) Jonathan Sanchez was 0-4, 7.53 as a starter in June, and because of it, he lost his spot in the rotation, getting another chance only because of Randy Johnson's injury. We all deserve a second chance, and Sanchez made the best of his, no-hitting the Padres 8-0 Friday night by the Bay.

                    12) Sanchez had never pitched a shutout or a complete game in the big leagues; his dad flew in from Puerto Rico and saw his kid pitch in major leagues for the first time. The Giants might never let him leave.

                    11) Only San Diego baserunner reached on a Uribe error in 8th inning-- he had moved from 2B to 3B for defensive purposes-- whoops. Aaron Rowand saved the no-hitter with a leaping catch against fence in ninth. It was Giants' first no-hitter since John Montefusco in Atlanta in 1976.

                    10) Now the Padres aren't good; they didn't get a hit in first six innings against Tim Lincecum Thursday night, and face Matt Cain Saturday. It has been a long season for Bud Black, who brought up Saratoga native Tim Stauffer from AAA to pitch for the Friars in Saturday's game.

                    9) Its amazing how horrible the Cubs are playing- they got booed off the field by the home fans during an 8-3 loss to the Cardinals at Wrigley.

                    8) Cubs had eight guys on All-Star team LY; they have one this year.

                    7) Indians lost 5-1 in Detroit, ninth time in Cliff Lee's 19 starts Tribe has scored two or less runs.

                    6) Bronx Bombers have to be concerned about Joba Chamberlain, who in 4.1 innings gave up five runs and nine hits on the 18 balls the Angels put in play. The Halos hit pair of 3-run homers after Bronx Bomber errors. Bombers have now lost 15 of last 20 games in Anaheim.

                    5) Mets told Nick Evans he was being sent to AAA at 4:00, then made the Church/Francoeur trade, so they had a roster spot open for Friday's game, and Evans didn't go to Buffalo. Even more bizarre, they put him in the starting lineup. No wonder they're 3-11 in their last 14 games.

                    4) Royals only gave up three hits at Fenway, but still lost 1-0 to Boston Lester tossed eight shutout innings for the Red Sox, spoiling an excellent performance by Kansas City's Brian Bannister.

                    3) Internet voting for the last All-Star spot in each league got ridiculous; over 15,000,000 votes were cast for Shane Victorino-- there weren't any limits to how many times a person could vote. Every person in Hawai'i must have carpal tunnel syndrome this weekend.

                    2) Friday was third time Albert Pujols had a triple/homer in same game.

                    1) There were six shutouts in the big leagues Friday night; 11 of the 30 starting pitchers finished the 7th inning, a good night for pitchers, with Jonathan Sanchez having by far the best night out of all of them.

Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies [8:10 PM ET]

Braves: Jair Jurrjens (6-7, 2.91 ERA) has pitched well throughout the season, but the Braves haven’t supported him. Atlanta is 1-6 in the right-hander’s last seven starts. Jurrjens has a 3.40 ERA during this span. In his last start on Monday, Jurrjens surrendered four earned runs in six innings during a 4-2 loss to the Cubs. It was just the third time in 18 starts this season Jurrjens has yielded more than three earned runs in a game. The Braves have lost five of the past seven times at Coors Field. The Braves have a couple of infield injuries. Second baseman Kelly Johnson is on the DL and shortstop Yunel Escobar did not play on Friday because of a lower back strain. Chiepper Jones did return to the starting lineup on Friday after not starting the last three games due to a groin injury.

The Under is 13-6-1 in Jurrjens’ last 20 starts.

Key Injuries - Yunel Escobar and Javier Vazquez (abdominal) are day-to-day.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rockies (-$1.45 O/U 9 under -$1.15): Colorado has been the hottest team in baseball since June 4 going 26-8. The Rockies are 15-5 in their last 20 games at Coors Field. The Rockies have won 22 of their last 31 against a right-handed starter. Jason Marquis (11-5, 3.61 ERA) goes for his major league-high 12th victory. Marquis hasn’t allowed a run in his last 17 innings. He shut out the Nationals, 1-0, in his last start on Monday scattering seven hits in eight innings. Marquis’ sinker was in top form as he induced 13 groundball outs. If you discount his June 24 performance against the Angels when he allowed seven earned runs, Marquis has given up just six earned runs in his past five starts. Marquis has never won more than 15 games in a season. Marquis’ ERA’s the past three years are 6.02, 4.60 and 4.53. Is a correction due soon?

Mariners: The Mariners have been a solid under home team lately going 15-7 under in their last 22 games at Safeco Field. They are 8-2 to the under in their last 10 matchups versus American League Western Division clubs.
