    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, July 7

Today in the one-year anniversary of the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox take on the A's, the Yankees take on the Twins, and the Cards meet the Brewers.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

The Red Sox will hand the ball to Josh Beckett (9-3, 3.67 ERA) on Tuesday night as they play host to the Athletics and Dana Eveland (1-2, 7.40 ERA). Righthander Beckett gave up five earned runs over seven innings in a no-decision against the Orioles last time out, but Boston is 8-2 in his last 10 outings. Lefthander Eveland was recalled from Sacramento on Monday to replace Dallas Braden (bereavement list) in the rotation; Eveland last started on May 1 against the Mariners, giving up seven earned runs over 4 2-3 innings.

Elsewhere around the American League on Tuesday it'll be Kansas City at Detroit, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Cleveland at the White Sox, Texas at the Angels, Baltimore at Seattle, and the Yankees at Minnesota. New York lefthander CC Sabathia (7-5, 3.85 ERA) will take the mound in that last contest; he was tagged with a loss by the Mariners (six runs in 5 2-3 innings) last time out. The Twins will counter with Scott Baker (6-6, 4.99 ERA), who has won each of his last two starts.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The marquee matchup on the National League schedule for Tuesday is St. Louis at Milwaukee, with Adam Wainwright (8-5, 3.32 ERA) taking on Yovani Gallardo (8-5, 2.75 ERA). Righthander Wainwright gave up just one earned run over nine innings of work against the Giants last time out (striking out 12), but had to settle for a no-decision. Righthander Gallardo is coming off a hard-luck outing as well, allowing just one earned run on five hits over seven innings in a loss to the Mets.

Making up the rest of the NL slate for Tuesday: Cincinnati at Philadelphia, the Dodgers at the Mets, Atlanta at the Cubs, Pittsburgh at Houston, Washington at Colorado, San Diego at Arizona, and Florida at San Francisco. The Marlins will go with righthander Josh Johnson (7-1, 2.76 ERA) in that west-coast matchup; Florida is 7-1 in Johnson's last nine starts. Barry Zito (4-8, 4.82 ERA) takes the hill for the Giants, after getting tagged with a loss by the Cardinals last time out.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA offers up four games on Tuesday, with San Antonio at Seattle, Connecticut at Atlanta, Washington at Minnesota, and Chicago at Sacramento. The Sky (6-4 straight-up, 3-7 against-the-spread) were defeated 85-72 by the Silver Stars last time out, with Armintie Price tossing in a team-high 17 points off the bench. The Monarchs (2-8 SU, 3-7 ATS) are coming off a rare victory, getting 21 points from Nicole Powell in a 74-68 win over the Lynx last Thursday evening.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Brett Anderson's shutout in Fenway last night ended A's 151-game streak without one of their pitchers tossing a complete game.

-- Tough night for Johnny Cueto: he faced 11 hitters, and nine of them scored, as Reds lost 22-1 in Philly.

-- Jason Marquis is 11-5, 3.61 after beating Nationals 1-0 in Denver.

-- Seattle's Jarrod Washburn one-hit the Orioles 5-0 at Safeco Field.

-- Arizona came from behind and beat the Padres, making them 2-15 in the game after Dan Haren pitches-- not sure why that is, but it is.

-- Arizona TV guys are going nuts campaigning for Mark Reynolds to be voted onto the NL All-Star team. Pablo Sandoval leads voting now.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      Thought of the Day

Has anyone involved with the Michael Jackson fiasco ever heard of the phrase "rest in peace"?
The guy passed away June 25th, for Pete's sake, but still hasn't been buried. Enough already.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Famous people, obscure facts........

      13) The late Farrah Fawcett's first appearance on a TV series was on the old TV show I Dream of Jeannie, back in 1968.

      12) Barry Bonds was walked intentionally 688 times in his career, the most of any player ever.

      11) Jim Carrey started his standup comedy career at a club in Toronto called Yuk Yuks; his big break was being discovered by the late Rodney Dangerfield. Carrey now commands as much as $20M for a movie.

      10) In the 20 years since the NBA Draft was reduced to two rounds, it is these schools that have had the most players drafted:
      -- Arizona 31, Duke 29, UCLA 28, North Carolina 25, UConn 23.

      9) Comedian/writer Al Franken, now a US Senator from Minnesota, is one of the co-writers of a terrific movie, When a Man Loves a Woman, which starred Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia.

      8) Tennis star Roger Federer has now gotten to at least the semifinals in his last 21 Grand Slam tournaments-- his 15 Grand Slam championships came against 11 different opponents in the finals.

      7) The pallbearers for pitchman Billy Mays' funeral wore blue shirts and khaki pants at the funeral, much like Mays wore when he advertised his products; Mays was supposedly wearing a shirt with the Oxi-Clean logo on it when he was buried.

      6) Dwyane Wade was a basketball star at Marquette, but the only other schools who recruited him out of high school? Illinois State and DePaul.

      5) From age 10-13, CNN's Anderson Cooper modeled with Ford models for Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Macy's.

      4) Jim Nantz of CBS went to University of Houston, where he was on the golf team with future pros Blaine McCallister and Fred Couples.

      3) Actor Kevin James was on the wrestling team at Ward-Melville HS on Long Island; one of his teammates was future WWE star Mick Foley.

      2) When the Chargers traded the first pick in the 2001 draft to Atlanta, the Falcons picked Michael Vick-- San Diego wound up with four other players-- Reche Caldwell, Tay Cody, Tim Dwight and a running back who turned out OK, LaDainian Tomlinson.

      1) The first President Bush, George H. Bush, played college baseball at Yale and played in the first two College World Series.

        SCOREBOARD

        Tuesday, July 7

Oakland at Boston (7:10 p.m. EDT). Red Sox All-Star Josh Beckett goes for his 10th win against the Athletics, the AL West's worst team.

        STARS

        Monday

-Pablo Sandoval, Giants, hit his first career grand slam in San Francisco's 5-4 win over the Florida Marlins.

        OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE

Chase Utley hit a three-run homer and Shane Victorino and Greg Dobbs each had two-run shots during a 10-run first inning, helping the Philadelphia Phillies rout the Cincinnati Reds 22-1 on Monday night. The Phillies tied a club record for most runs in the first inning. It was the most runs by Philadelphia since a 26-7 win over the New York Mets at the old Veterans Stadium on June 11, 1985. The 22 runs were the most in the six-year history of Citizens Bank Park.

        PITCHING PERFORMANCE

Jarrod Washburn piled up some impressive numbers during his one-hitter. The Seattle Mariners left-hander faced one batter over the minimum, issuing no walks and striking out three in his 110-pitch effort. Nick Markakis' two-out single in the fourth was Baltimore's only hit in the 5-0 loss. It was the second one-hitter at Safeco Field and 10th in franchise history.

        WELLS DONE

Randy Wells pitched six solid innings to win his fourth consecutive start and the Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 for their sixth victory in eight games. Wells (4-3) gave up two runs and seven hits. Wells is the first Cubs rookie to win four straight starts since Kerry Wood in 1998, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

        SAD STATS

Since Carlos Beltran's last game on June 21, the New York Mets have gone 5-9 with a .234 batting average. They scored three runs or fewer in 10 of 14 games, including three shutouts and three one-run games. David Wright went 11 for 52 (.212) with one homer, three RBIs and 15 strikeouts over that span. In two series against Yankees and Phillies, Wright went 0 for 22 with eight strikeouts and three grounded into double plays as the Mets lost all six games.

        COMPLETE MASTERY

Mike Hampton pitched seven solid innings to lead the Houston Astros to a 4-1 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hampton allowed one run and three hits to improve to 14-3 with a 2.20 ERA in 20 career starts against Pittsburgh dating to 1995. He has won 10 consecutive starts against the Pirates.

        HE'S BACK

Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez returned to the lineup after missing two months with a dislocated left shoulder. He went 0 for 4 in Chicago's 4-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves. ... Rangers center fielder Josh Hamilton was 2 for 4 with a double and two strikeouts in his first game after abdominal surgery, but Texas lost 9-4 to the Los Angeles Angels.

        SPEAKING

"You don't know how things are going to play out. There's no script for that one. I think what you saw out there was just pure emotion, from the fans, from myself.'' - former Red Sox star Nomar Garciaparra, who tipped his helmet and tapped his chest as he received a one-minute standing ovation before his first at-bat as an opponent at Fenway Park. Garciaparra singled twice and drove in the first run in the Oakland Athletics' 6-0 victory at Boston.

        SEASONS

        July 7

1923 - Lefty O'Doul, pitching for the Boston Red Sox, allowed 13 runs in the sixth inning to the Cleveland Indians, who won 27-3. In 1928, he returned to the majors as a great hitting outfielder.

1936 - The NL won its first All-Star game 4-3 at Braves Field in Boston.

1937 - Lou Gehrig drove in four runs with a home run and a double to pace the AL to an 8-3 victory over the NL in the All-Star game at Washington's Griffith Stadium. President Franklin D. Roosevelt attended the game.

1959 - At Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, the first of two All-Star games played that season went to the NL, 5-4. The NL scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the eighth when Hank Aaron singled in a run and scored on a triple by Willie Mays.

1964 - The NL beat the AL 7-4 in the All-Star game on Johnny Callison's two-out, three-run homer off Dick Radatz in the bottom of the ninth inning at New York's Shea Stadium. The win pulled the NL even with its rivals (17-17-1) for the first time since the series began.

1982 - Harold Baines of Chicago hit three successive home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the White Sox to a 7-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1998 - Coors Field lived up to its billing as a hitter's haven as the American League beat the Nationals 13-8 in the highest-scoring All-Star game in major league history. The 21 runs broke the record set in the AL's 11-9 win in 1954.

2003 - Shea Hillenbrand had his first three-homer game - tying a major league record by homering in three consecutive innings - and drove in seven runs as Arizona beat Colorado 14-6.

2004 - Kazuhisa Ishii pitched a one-hitter in Los Angeles' 11-0 victory over Arizona. Ishii retired his first 12 batters before giving up a leadoff walk in the fourth to Luis Gonzalez and a line single by Shea Hillenbrand. No one else reached base against Ishii, who went the distance for the second time in 72 starts.

2006 - Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner became the first player in major league history to hit five grand slams before the All-Star break when he connected in the second inning of a 9-0 win over Baltimore.

2008 - Hiroki Kuroda of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitched seven perfect innings before giving up a double to Mark Teixeira in the eighth inning. Teixeira was the only baserunner allowed by Kuroda in his 91-pitch complete game 3-0 win over Atlanta.

Today's birthdays: Brandon McCarthy 26; John Buck 29.

          This Day in Baseball

On July 7 in Baseball History...

1900 - Boston hurler Kid Nichols notches his 300th career victory, beating Chicago 11-4. The win comes two months before his 31st birthday, making him the youngest to ever reach the magic figure.

1914 - Suffering heavy losses from Federal League competition in Baltimore, Jack Dunn, owner of the International League Orioles, offers Babe Ruth (plus Ernie Shore and catcher Ben Egan) for $10,000 to old friend Connie Mack. Mack refuses, pleading poverty. Cincinnati, which has a working agreement giving them the choice of two players, takes outfielder George Twombly and shortstop Claud Derrick. Dunn finally peddles his threesome to new owner Joe Lannin of the Red Sox for a reported $25,000.

1922 - Pirates outfielder Max Carey is the busiest man on the field in a 9-8, 18-inning loss to the Giants. He gets six hits, draws three walks, has three stolen bases (including one of home), and catches seven flies.

1923 - Cleveland scores in every inning against the Red Sox, but playing at home, the team does not bat in the ninth of a doubleheader opener. They run up an A.L. record twenty-seven runs, including 13 in the sixth inning, for a 27-3 win. The Indians keep it up, scoring three in the first inning of the second game en route to an 8-5 win.

1936 - The N.L., having lost the first three All-Star Games, wins 4-3 at Fenway Park. After Dizzy Dean and Carl Hubbell each pitch scoreless three-inning stints, Curt Davis is hammered by the A.L., allowing Lou Gehrig's home run, but Lon Warneke shuts the door.

1937 - Lou Gehrig leads the A.L. All-Stars over the NL 8-3 with a home run, double, and four RBI. President Franklin D. Roosevelt attends the game in Washington. Dizzy Dean's toe is fractured by a drive off the bat of Earl Averill. After the injury Dean is unable to pitch with the same delivery. He uses an unnatural motion, causing an arm injury from which he never recovers.

1942 - A military All-star team that includes Bob Feller, Cecil Travis, Sam Chapman, Benny McCoy, Johnny Sturm, and Frankie Pytlak loses 5-0 to A.L. stars in a game at Cleveland in front of more than 60,000 fans. Military relief receives $160,000.

1948 - The Indians sign Satchel Paige, fabulous veteran Negro League pitcher. Ridiculed as a Bill Veeck publicity stunt, the move pays as the 42-year-old Paige finishes 6-1.

1958 - At the N.L. meeting, William Shea outlines plans for a $12 million stadium at Flushing Meadows, the eventual site of Shea Stadium.

1959 - The N.L. defeats the AL 5-4 in the All-Star Game at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Willie Mays knocks in Hank Aaron with the deciding run. Don Drysdale pitches perfect ball the first three innings.

1964 - Johnny Callison's ninth-inning three-run home run off Dick Radatz caps a four-run rally and gives the N.L. a 7-4 win in the All-Star Game at Shea Stadium. This evens the series at 17 wins apiece.

1991 - Nolan Ryan misses his eighth no-hitter when California's Dave Winfield singles in the eighth inning. His 7-0 win, however, puts Texas in first place at the All-Star break.

1993 - Tom Browning decides that he has seen the view from the dugout often enough, so he leaves Wrigley Field and watches the Reds beat the Cubs 4-3 from the roof of a three-story building across Sheffield Avenue. He is fined $500 for leaving the dugout - not to mention the ballpark - during a game.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets (130, 8.5)

Just call them the New York Mess.

The Mess, sorry Mets, are banged up, beaten and barely hanging on in the race for a National League postseason spot.

Lineup regulars Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes are on the DL and not expected back anytime soon. The rotation is missing John Maine and Oliver Perez.

With no protection in the lineup, slugging third baseman David Wright is 5-for-40 with just three RBI and 14 strikeouts in his last 10 games.

"For us to score, I have to swing the bat better," Wright told the team's website.

And when Wright isn't hitting, the Mets don't hit. The Mets have lost eight of 10 and have been held to two runs or less seven times in that span. Over the weekend, the Mets were swept in Philadelphia, becoming the first team to be held without an extra-base hit in consecutive games at Citizens Bank Park.

On Tuesday, the Mets host the Dodgers, the best team in baseball. Los Angeles swept New York on the West Coast in mid-May, allowing just six runs in three games.

                Pick: Los Angeles -134

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers (-230, 8.5)

When the Detroit Tigers were last at home, they were unbeatable. With Justin Verlander on the mound, they just might be untouchable.

After a 3-6 road trip, Detroit is back at Comerica Park, where it has not lost in over a month. The Tigers have won eight straight home games, all as the favorite, averaging 6.1 runs.

Detroit’s last loss at home was June 5, when Verlander allowed no runs in eight innings of a 2-1 setback to the Los Angeles Angels. That is the closest the right-hander has come to losing at home this season.

Verlander is arguably the best home pitcher in baseball. He is 4-0 with a 1.11 ERA, best among qualified starters in home games. In 40 2-3 innings, he has 51 strikeouts.

He matches up against the Kansas City Royals, who are 3-9 in their last dozen meetings with Verlander.

                Pick: Detroit -230

                  Tuesday, July 7

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers)

Kershaw has pitched way better than his 5-5 record indicates. Over his last four starts, batters have almost been better off waiting him out for a walk rather than swinging for a hit.

The 21-year-old left-hander has been next to untouchable, going 2-0 with a 0.76 ERA during that span while the Dodgers have won all four games. In three of those outings, he did not give up a run.

Kershaw has given up 14 hits and issued 13 walks, which have been a problem for him throughout his brief career and impacts his pitch count and ability to work deeper in games.

“Sometimes when you’re not able to throw strikes consistently, it’s going to be like that,” he told the team’s website.

On the other hand, Kershaw has given up just one homer since April 26.

                  Slumping

                  Paul Maholm (Pittsburgh Pirates)

The lefthander is 1-2 in his previous four starts for last-place Pittsburgh, which appears to be slipping into its annual midseason swoon. But that doesn’t tell the whole story about Maholm.

After three straight starts of seven innings, Maholm has gotten past the fifth inning just once in his last four outings. Over his last four starts, Maholm has given up 38 hits and 21 earned runs in just 21 1-3 innings for an ugly 8.86 ERA. In his last outing, he gave up six runs and 11 hits to the punchless Mets.

About the best that can be said of Maholm lately is that he still isn’t giving up homers. He has allowed just one during the slump and five all season.

                  Debuting

                  Marc Rzepczynski (Toronto Blue Jays)

Rzepczynski has made a quick ascent through the minor leagues since the Blue Jays drafted the lefthander in the fifth round two years ago.

He did not lose a game at Single-A Auburn in 2007 and spent 2008 with Single-A Lansing, going 7-6 with a 2.83 ERA. He began this season with Double-A New Hampshire before being promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas.

In two starts in the hitter-friendly PCL, Rzepczynski was lights out, giving up one run and seven hits with 16 strikeouts in 11 1-3 innings.

In 254 2-3 minor league innings, Rzepczynski has 277 strikeouts. He is being given a shot at Toronto’s fifth starter slot, replacing the ineffective Brad Mills.

                  Dustin Nippert (Texas Rangers)

A 6-foot-8 right-hander who pitched primarily in relief last season, Nippert is making his first start of the year for the Rangers.

Nippert has missed the entire campaign with a muscle strain in his shoulder. His rehab has included five minor-league outings, including a start for Triple-A Oklahoma City Wednesday where he allowed one run and two hits in five innings.

“I feel like I’m able to locate all my pitches and throws strikes,” he told the Rangers’ website.

Nippert made six starts at the end of last season, going 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA. One of those was a loss to the Los Angeles Angels, his opponent Tuesday.

                  Returning

                  Erik Bedard (Seattle Mariners)

Bedard is another left-hander who has pitched better than his numbers, although he hasn’t pitched in a while.

He did not allow more than three runs in any of his first 11 starts but won just five of them, taking four no-decisions. In both his losses, the Mariners – among the worst hitting teams in the majors - didn’t score.

Bedard won three straight starts before going on the DL just under a month ago with shoulder inflammation. He also had shoulder issues last year that ended his season before the midway point.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Series of the week: Dodgers at Mets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets

                    Season series

The Dodgers swept the Mets in a three-game series May 18-20 out in L.A. The Dodgers didn’t have Manny Ramirez for that series. New York, meanwhile, was just 3-for-27 in the three games with runners in scoring position. And the Mets didn’t have a homer in the entire set.

However, Los Angeles is just 2-7 in the past nine meetings in the Big Apple. This will be L.A.’s first look at new Citi Field.

                    Welcome home?

Ramirez was raised in New York, but here’s guessing he doesn’t get a warm reception from his fellow New Yorkers following that drug suspension. Manny returned last Friday in San Diego, but there seemed to be more Dodger fans in Petco Park than Padres fans, so all Ramirez heard were cheers (in an odd coincidence, the locker area that Manny used at Petco was the same one that Barry Bonds occupied on his visits to San Diego).

Padres pitcher Chris Young was upset that Ramirez, a cheater, got all those standing ovations.

"I think it sends the wrong message to kids," Young told reporters. "Juan Pierre should be the one getting those ovations, in my opinion."

Ramirez didn’t start Sunday’s game because Manager Joe Torre said he wanted Ramírez to rest his legs after being out so long. Manny did pinch-hit in the 11th inning and flew out; he was 1-for-7 in the series, with that one hit a solo home run Saturday. Ramirez also was lifted in the first two games after batting in the sixth inning.

Torre said he would continue to ration Ramirez’s playing time at least up to the All-Star break.

"It's his legs -- he's not in game shape yet,” Torre said to the media. “He has to get his legs under him. Running back and forth to the outfield, it takes some time. By the time the second half starts, he should be all the way back.”

                    The pitchers

Tuesday: Dodgers (Clayton Kershaw, 5-5, 3.49) at Mets (Mike Pelfrey, 6-3, 4.26) – Los Angeles has won Kershaw’s past four starts. But Kershaw's ERA on the road this season is 5.54, compared to 1.85 at Dodger Stadium. Pelfrey is coming off his best start of the season and has an ERA of 3.91 at home. Neither guy pitched in the first series between these clubs in May.

Wednesday: Dodgers (Hiroki Kuroda, 3-4, 3.91) at Mets (Oliver Perez, 1-2, 9.97) – This is Perez’s first start since May 2. He went on the DL with tendinitis in his right knee May 3. Perez takes Tim Redding’s spot in the rotation, with Redding now in the bullpen.

Thursday: Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 3-3, 3.49) at Mets (Livan Hernandez, 5-4, 4.56) – Wolf faced the Mets May 18, getting a no-decision despite allowing just two runs in 7 2-3 innings. That remains his longest outing of the season. Hernandez faced L.A. May 20, also getting a no-decision despite allowing one run in seven innings.

                    A few numbers

The Dodgers have the majors' best winning percentage in one-run games at .692 (18-8). They took two of three from San Diego over the weekend, but the bullpen allowed 11 runs in the final two games to the weak-hitting Padres.

In the three games since Ramirez returned, Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal is 8-for-16 with four runs scored. However, second baseman Orlando Hudson is in a 0-for-22 slump.

The Mets were held to just three runs in three games by the struggling Phillies’ staff over as New York was swept the weekend. It was the Mets’ fifth three-game sweep of the year – only the Nats have been swept more in the National League. New York third baseman David Wright was hitless in 11 at-bats in the series and is just five hits in his last 41 trips to the plate.

New York set a dubious mark Sunday, becoming the first visiting team at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park to go consecutive games without an extra-base hit.

Both teams were off Monday, and the Mets have won the past five times they have played following a scheduled day off and eight times in the nine such occurrences. The Dodgers are 4-1 in their past five following a day off and have won the past four openers of a series.

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Dodgers (-$1.35 O/U 8.5 under -$1.15): The Dodgers are 22-8 when Manny Ramirez has been in the lineup, but they have lost seven of their past nine games to the Mets in New York. Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw (5-5, 3.49 ERA) has given up just two runs in his last four starts, while striking out 26 in 23 2/3 innings. The Dodgers have won each of Kershaw’s last four starts. Kershaw didn’t get a decision in his last outing on Wednesday during a 1-0 victory versus Colorado. Kershaw held the Rockies to one hit and had five strikeouts, but also gave up five walks in five innings before being lifted after 97 pitches. The lefty has faced the Mets only once and that was on May 30 of last year. He lasted only 2 2/3 innings, yielding four runs on five hits. The Dodgers have won six of the past eight times Kershaw has been favored.

The Over is 25-10-4 in the Dodgers’ last 39 games versus a team with a losing record.
The Over has cashed 7 of the last 8 times Kershaw has pitched against a club with a losing mark.

                            Key Injuries - None.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Mets: The injury-racked Mets are cold having lost eight of their last 10. The Mets were out-scored, 13-3, in their last series against the Phillies. If you discount a nine-run performance versus the Pirates, the Mets have scored just 19 runs in their last 10 games. However, the Mets are 12-5 the last 17 times Mike Pelfrey has been an underdog. Pelfrey (6-3, 4.26 ERA) scattered six hits in 7 2/3 innings during his last start, a 1-0 road win on Wednesday versus the Brewers. Pelfrey has faced the Dodgers just once, a 3-2 Mets victory on May 31 of 2008. Pelfrey gave up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Mets third baseman David Wright is five-for-40 in his last 10 games with three RBIs. But he is hitting .427 with 34 RBIs in 36 career games against the Dodgers.

The Over is 14-5-3 in Pelfrey’s last 22 starts versus a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - Carlos Beltran (knee), Jose Reyes (calf) and Carlos Delgado (hip) are all on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins [8:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-$1.35, O/U 9 under -$1.15): The Yankees have won 10 of their last 12 games, averaging 6.6 runs during this span. They have won seven in a row when facing a right-handed starter. CC Sabathia (7-5, 3.85 ERA) is 12-8 with a 3.12 ERA in 27 lifetime starts against the Twins. He has posted a 1.24 ERA in winning his last four starts versus the Twins. But the big lefty also is off one of his worst outings, giving up six runs and a season-high 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in an 8-4 loss to Seattle last Thursday. Sabathia was 6-1 with a 2.82 ERA during his previous 10 starts. Mark Teixeira is batting .609 in six games against the Twins, while teammate Alex Rodriguez is batting .370 with 21 homers in 55 games at the Metrodome. Rodriguez has blasted five homers in his last 11 games at Minnesota.

The Yankees are 19-7 in their last 26 games versus American League Central Division clubs.

Key Injuries - Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder) is on the DL

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Twins: The Twins are a season-high three games above .500 and even though they are underdogs, they have multiple angles going for them. They are 22-7 in their last 29 games following an off day. They are 37-14 in their last 51 home games versus a team with a winning record and they are 60-28 overall in their past 88 games at the Metrodome. San Antonio Silver Stars at Seattle Storm (-5.5, 142)

The Silver Stars-Storm matchup in Seattle is either a gimme or a trap.

The Silver Stars are 0-3 straight up and against the spread on the road, where they have lost by double digits each time and failed to cover despite getting generous numbers.

San Antonio is averaging just 66 points in road games compared to 76.6 at home.

The Storm are 3-0 straight up and 2-1 ATS at home, where they have won twice by double digits and covered sizable numbers. This is the lowest number they have faced at home.

Seattle is averaging nearly 80 points in home games compared to 73 on the road.

                              Sounds like a gimme.

                              Pick: Seattle -5.5
