Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees host the Blue Jays, the Sprint Cup Series races at Daytona, and the Williams sisters hit the court at Wimbledon.
Meeting up in the Junior Circuit . . .
The Yankees will be looking to get a second straight win from Chien-Ming Wang (1-6, 10.06 ERA) when they host the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon. Righthander Wang picked up his first victory of the season in a start against the Mets last time out, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 5 1-3 innings of work. Wang will be in tough Saturday, though, as the Jays counter with ace righthander Roy Halladay (10-2, 2.56 ERA), who has allowed three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 starts. Toronto has won 10 of Halladay's 15 starts this season.
Also on the American League's holiday slate for Saturday: Seattle at Boston, the White Sox at Kansas City, Oakland at Cleveland, Tampa Bay at Texas, Baltimore at the Angels, and Detroit at Minnesota. The Tigers will send Edwin Jackson (6-4, 2.49 ERA) to the mound against the Twins' Francisco Liriano (4-8, 5.62 ERA).
Taking the field in the Senior Circuit . . .
Tim Lincecum (8-2, 2.37 ERA) will be gunning for his third straight victory on Saturday afternoon when his Giants play host to the Astros and Russ Ortiz (3-3, 3.36 ERA). Righthander Lincecum has gone the full nine innings in three of his past four starts, allowing just four earned runs over his past 35 innings pitched. Righthander Ortiz has surrendered only seven earned runs over his past three outings (20 1-3 innings), but Houston managed to drop all three of the contests.
Rounding out the National League slate for Saturday: Atlanta at Washington, Milwaukee at the Cubs, St. Louis at Cincinnati, the Dodgers at San Diego, Pittsburgh at Florida, Arizona at Colorado, and the Mets at Philadelphia. New York's Fernando Nieve (3-1, 2.25 ERA) will take the mound in the battle of division rivals, while Philadelphia will counter with Jamie Moyer (6-6, 6.05 ERA).
Roaring around the track . . .
The Sprint Cup Series races under the lights on Saturday night, as Daytona International Speedway hosts the Coke Zero 400. Kyle Busch, the defending champion at this event, is pegged as the 5/1 Vegas favorite to visit victory lane again on Saturday, while Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are right behind him at 6/1. Tony Stewart rounds out the top tier of contenders to win the Coke Zero 400 at 8/1 odds; Stewart holds a 69-point lead on Gordon in the driver standings.
Rounding out the Roundup . . .
Finally, the Wimbledon women's final will be played out at the All England Club on Saturday, with Venus Williams taking on sister Serena for the title. Venus had no trouble dispatching top-seeded Dinara Safina in the semi-finals on Thursday, winning 6-1, 6-0. Serena, on the other hand, had to sweat out a 6-7, 7-5, 8-6 win over fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva. The oddsmakers like the elder Williams to get another Wimbledon title Saturday, as she's been pegged as the -150 favorite.

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, hit his club-record fourth grand slam of the season and 10th of his career as St. Louis beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-4.
-Brooks Conrad, Braves, smacked a pinch-hit, go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning to lead Atlanta past Washington for its season-high fifth straight victory.
-Rob Johnson, Mariners, doubled home two runs in the 11th inning and Seattle beat the Red Sox 7-6 on Friday night.
-Shin-Soo Choo, Indians, homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead Cleveland to a 15-3 victory over the Athletics.

MANNY RETURNS
Returning from his 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy, Manny Ramirez barely hit the ball out of the infield in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. He finished 0 for 3 with a walk.
THE SLAMMER
Albert Pujols hit his club-record fourth grand slam of the season and 10th of his career in St. Louis' 7-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. He snapped a tie with Hall of Famer Stan Musial for the Cardinals' career grand-slam record, and topped the single-season mark he shared with Jim Bottomley, Keith Hernandez and Fernando Tatis. The homer also was the 350th of Pujols' career, making him at 29 years, 168 days the third-youngest player in major league history to reach that mark. Only Alex Rodriguez (28 years, 282 days) and Ken Griffey Jr. (28 years, 308 days) were younger.
FIRST LOSS
Kansas City's Zack Greinke lost to the White Sox for the first time in three decisions this season - 5-0 Friday night - and hardly looked like the overpowering right-hander who began the year 6-0. Greinke gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings and his major league-leading ERA went from 1.95 to 2.00.
WALK THIS WAY
Jake Fox fouled off four pitches before working a two-out walk on a close 3-2 pitch from Mark DiFelice, sending the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 10 innings Friday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Tommy Hunter earned his first career victory on his 23rd birthday, leading Texas to a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay. Hunter was making his sixth career start and third this season. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out five in 5 1-3 innings.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
A few hours after his contract was purchased by Atlanta from Triple-A Gwinnett, Brooks Conrad smacked a pinch-hit, go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Braves beat the Washington Nationals 9-8 on Friday night for their season-high fifth straight victory. ... Jarrett Hoffpauir drove in the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning with his first career hit - a two-run single - as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-4.
STUBBORN STREAK
San Francisco's Ryan Sadowski has 13 scoreless innings, including seven in a 13-0 win over Houston on Friday night, to start his career. It's the longest such streak by a Giants pitchers since Mike Remlinger's 15 shutout innings in 1991, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
UNEXPECTED POWER
Pittsburgh's Brandon Moss hit his second homer of the season and Ramon Vazquez, starting a second consecutive game for injured second baseman Freddy Gonzalez, belted his first homer since July 31, 2008, leading the Pirates to a 7-4 victory over the Florida Marlins on Friday night.
BACK IN BUSINESS
Philadelphia's Rodrigo Lopez (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings in a 7-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night to earn his first win since beating the Phillies on July 7, 2007, when he played for Colorado. The right-hander was sidelined since having elbow ligament replacement surgery 23 months ago.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Outdoor baseball is tentatively set to return to Minneapolis on April 12 when the Minnesota Twins play their 2010 home opener against the Boston Red Sox. The date was contained in a draft schedule for next season that recently was sent to teams and revealed Friday to The Associated Press. This is the 28th and final season for the Twins at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Barring postseason play, the Twins play their final game there Oct. 4 against the Kansas City Royals.

Florida's Hanley Ramirez failed to drive in a run for the first time in 11 games, going 0 for 4 in the Marlins' 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night. It was the longest consecutive-game RBI streak by an NL shortstop since the statistic began being officially kept in 1920. ... Arizona made three more errors in a 5-0 loss at Colorado, running their season total to a major league-leading 74. ... Tim Wakefield made his 383rd start for the Boston Red Sox, surpassing Roger Clemens for the top spot on the team's career list. ... The New York Yankees' Mark Teixeira has gone 68 at-bats without a home run since June 12.

1905 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored two runs in the 20th inning, giving Rube Waddell a 4-2 victory over Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox. Both pitchers went the distance. Young did not allow a walk.
1908 - George Wiltse of the New York Giants pitched a 10-inning, 1-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.
1912 - George Mullin of the Detroit Tigers celebrated his 32nd birthday by pitching a no-hitter over the St. Louis Browns.
1925 - Two of the great left-handers of their time - Herb Pennock of the Yankees and Lefty Grove of the Athletics - hooked up in a pitchers duel that New York won 1-0 in 15 innings. Pennock gave up four hits and walked none.
1939 - Jim Tabor of the Boston Red Sox hit three home runs, including two grand slams, in an 18-12 triumph over the Philadelphia Athletics in the second game of a doubleheader.
1976 - The Phillies' Tim McCarver lost a grand slam when he passed Garry Maddox on the basepaths. The Phillies still beat the Pirates 10-5 at Pittsburgh.
1983 - Dave Righetti of the New York Yankees pitched a 4-0 no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
1984 - Phil Niekro of the New York Yankees struck out five Texas Rangers to become the ninth player to pass the 3,000-strikeout plateau. No. 3,000 was Larry Parrish.
1984 - The New York Mets beat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings at Atlanta. The game went until just before 4 a.m. on July 5, and was followed by a fireworks display for the 10,000 still left in the stands.
2000 - St. Louis' Keith McDonald homered in his first major league at-bat as the Cardinals defeated Cincinnati 14-3.
2006 - Victor Martinez went 5-for-6 and Jhonny Peralta and Travis Hafner each hit two of Cleveland's six home runs, powering the Indians to a 19-1 rout of New York. The win was Cleveland's largest at home in more than 56 years, since a 21-2 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics on June 18, 1950.
2006 - Jose Contreras tossed 6 2-3 scoreless innings to win his 17th straight decision and lead the White Sox to a 13-0 victory over Baltimore.
2008 - Colorado homered six times to rally from a nine-run deficit for the biggest comeback in franchise history and an 18-17 victory over Florida. Chris Iannetta singled home the winning run off Kevin Gregg in the ninth inning. The Rockies and Marlins combined for 35 runs on 43 hits, 21 of them for extra bases with eight home runs.

On July 4 in Baseball History...
1905 - In the afternoon game of a doubleheader, Philadelphia's Rube Waddell bests Cy Young in a 25-inning marathon as the Athletics down Boston 4-2. A's catcher Ossee Schreckengost works twenty-eught innings in one day, a Major League record.
1911 - In the morning game between Chicago and Detroit, Ed Walsh stops Ty Cobb's 40-game hitting streak as the White Sox win 7-3. Cobb has batted .491 since the streak started on May 15.
1939 - A tearful Lou Gehrig tells 61,808 fans at Yankee Stadium, 'I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.' Gehrig's uniform number four is retired, the first Major League player so honored.
1960 - Mickey Mantle's three-run first-inning home run off Hal Woodeshick is the 300th of his career. Mantle becomes the 18th player to join the 300 club, but the Yankees drop a 9-8 decision to Washington.
1974 - Mike Marshall picks up a 3-2 win over Reds. Over the past 30 days, Marshall is 9-0 with three saves and a 1.82 ERA in twenty appearances.
1980 - Nolan Ryan fans Reds outfielder Cesar Geronimo to become the fourth pitcher ever to reach 3,000 career strikeouts. Geronimo was also Bob Gibson's 3,000th career strikeout victim. Despite the milestone, Ryan is tagged with the 8-1 loss.
1983 - Dave Righetti pitches the Yankees' first no-hitter since Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. He handcuffs the Red Sox 4-0 before a holiday crowd of 41,077 at Yankee Stadium.
1984 - Phil Niekro strikes out five batters in the Yankees' 5-0 win over Texas to become the ninth pitcher in major league history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.
1985 - In a marathon game that borders on the surreal, the Mets endure two rain delays and six hours and ten minutes of playing time to beat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings. Relief pitcher Rick Camp, an .060 career hitter, homers in the 18th inning to tie the game no pitcher has ever homered that late in a game. Keith Hernandez hits for the cycle in a game that ends at 3:55 a.m. on July 5, the latest finish in Major League history. At 4:01 a.m., the post-game fireworks display begins, causing some local residents to think the city is under attack.
1987 - In a seven-player swap, the Padres trade pitchers Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts and outfielder Kevin Mitchell to the Giants for third baseman Chris Brown and pitchers Keith Comstock, Mark Davis, and Mark Grant. In 1989, Mitchell will win the MVP Award for the Giants and Davis will win the Cy Young for the Padres.
1988 - Kansas City releases pitcher Dan Quisenberry, whose 238 saves are the fourth most in major league history. He will sign with St. Louis next week.
1989 - Cincinnati's Tom Browning is three outs from his second career perfect game when Dickie Thon doubles. Browning is eventually relieved by John Franco in a 2-1 win over Philadelphia.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals (+107, 9)
The White Sox are making their move in the AL Central – and they’re doing it with quality piching.
Chicago has allowed a meager 10 earned runs the past five games and is rapidly closing in on first-place Detroit. The White Sox have played dozens of low-scoring games this year and have an over/under record of 31-47-1 overall and 12-28 at home.
Combine those numbers with Kansas City’s 11-22-2 O/U mark on the road, and this one figures to be a snoozer for the fans hoping to see some early fireworks. Chicago also is 5-4 against the Royals this season, as six of their nine matchups have fallen below the number.
These Sox should leave the Royals hanging out to dry.
Pick: Under 9
Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies (-191, 10)
Home or away, the Diamondbacks are incredibly consistent – all they do is lose.
Arizona is just one of two teams in the NL – and one of four in the Majors – to have a losing record both home and on the road. And a trip to Coors Field is not what Arizona needs to turn its season around. The Rockies have the second-best run differential in the NL and are hitting the cover off the ball. Colorado, known for its homer-haven of a field, has used a balance offensive approach this year to score 392 runs entering the weekend, just two behind NL leader Philadelphia.
The two teams split six meetings earlier this year, but the Diamondbacks’ offense has been just as bad as its defense, and this Rockies team is playing much different than the one that started the season poorly.

Streaking
Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants)
The 25-year-old right-hander appeared to have a hangover from winning the NL Cy Young award to start the season. But after a dominant June, he looks poised to retain his award.
Lincecum failed to pitch at least seven innings only once in six starts last month, allowing a stingy eight earned runs over a staggering 48 2-3 innings. He finished the month 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA, upping his numbers on the year to 8-2 with a 2.37 ERA and a razor-thin 1.07 WHIP (walks + hits over innings pitched).
Houston, you’re going to have a problem.
"It takes some people longer to get ready for a season," Lincecum told the Associated Press. "I feel like I'm kind of getting into that zone right now. Things are coming easier. Mechanics are easier. I'm not thinking too much out there."
Aaron Cook (Colorado Rockies)
The key to Cook’s success last month is pretty obvious: get ground ball outs.
Cook (8-3, 3.77 ERA) has excelled at keeping the ball down, inducing 87 ground ball outs in June – just 19 less than he totaled in the first two months of the season combined.
In his past five starts Cook has yielded no more than one earned run while lasting at least six innings four times. His lone blemish was a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay in Denver in which he gave up all three run in seven innings. If Arizona doesn’t get to him early, the Diamondbacks are going to get grilled by Cook.
Slumping
Jason Berken (Baltimore Orioles)
The good news for Baltimore is that Berken finally has his ERA below a touchdown. But a 6.44 ERA also isn’t anything to stand up and cheer about.
Berken (1-5) is in the midst of a summer swoon, as he was absolutely abused by opposing hitters last month. In five starts he went 0-4 with an 8.51 ERA, allowing at least four earned runs in all but one outing. He averaged fewer than five innings per start and added a hideous 1.78 WHIP.
He’s going to have a devil of a time against the Angels.
"Every outing for me is a learning experience," Berken told the Associated Press. "The last thing I am going to do is sit here and feel sorry for myself. It's tough to pitch in the big leagues."
Vin Mazzaro (Oakland Athletics)
Oakland’s 22-year-old prospect looked phenomenal in his first two outings, yielding no runs in his first 13 2-3 innings in the majors early last month. But big-league lineups have been unkind to him in his past two starts, scoring seven runs on 12 hits over just 11 innings in a pair of loses.
Young pitching, however, has been the way of the Athletics this season, who start four rookies in their rotation. Mazzaro’s task won’t get any easier against the Indians, who can score runs in bunches and are due to break out of a hitting slump.

Price allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings during a 5-2 victory against Florida on Sunday. In his two previous starts versus the Rockies and Phillies, Price had given up 10 earned runs on 17 hits in 11 1/3 innings. Price has had bouts of wildness, walking 18 batters in his last five starts, as he attempts to achieve consistency and last deeper into games. Price reached the seventh inning on Sunday for just second time in seven starts. The Rays have won their past eight games on Saturday. The under has cashed in eight of Tampa Bay’s past nine road contests. Tampa is 7-2 in its last nine overall games, but just 7-21 in their last 28 games when favored on the road.
The Rays are 11-23 in their last 34 away games versus a left-handed starter.
The Under has cashed in 4 of the past 6 meetings between the two clubs in Arlington.

Rangers: Improved pitching and defense along with reduced power have made the Rangers a strong under the total club. Texas is 45-18-1 to the under in its last 64 games. Rookie southpaw Derek Holland (1-5, 6.20 ERA) struck out eight in his last start, but also gave up six earned runs on 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 7-3 home loss to San Diego last Saturday. That marked the first time in 56 years a pitcher had yielded 13 hits to go with eight strikeouts in less than six innings. The Rangers are 0-5 in Holland’s last six starts. Holland is 1-4 at home with a 9.00 ERA when pitching at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The Rangers have scored four or fewer runs in 10 of their last 14 games. The right-hander has surrendered six home runs in his last 12 2/3 innings. Petit was 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA in five stars for Triple-A Reno while working his way back into shape. In his last outing with Reno, Petit pitched three innings and gave up three runs (two earned) and five hits. Arizona is 7-3 in its last 10 games at Coors Field.

They beat him up on Opening Day, scoring six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings at Chase Field. Colorado is 1-7 in Cook’s last eight starts versus a team with a losing record. 13) I don't have kids; if I did, wouldn't know how to explain how Barry Bonds is treated like a leper, while Manny Ramirez is treated like a hero when the two of them have done basically the same things.
12) Ramirez went 0-3 with a walk in his return from suspension; he was a big reason why they had 42,217 people at Petco Park, many of whom were Dodger fans.
11) Jason Marquis is 10-5 with a strikeout ratio of 4.20 per nine innings; over the last 20 years, the guy with the lowest strikeout ration who won 20 games was Bill Gullickson (3.62) back in 1991.
10) Mets weren't close to trading for Mark DeRosa because they would not part with reliever Bobby Parnell. To get good players, you have to give up good players, but the crippled Mets continue to stand pat.

8) The world is strange-- Barack Obama earns $400,000 a year to be the President of United States-- Rafael Furcal turned down $40M for four years from the A's last winter, then signed for less with LA. Go figure.
7) Bill Welke called a terrific pitch ball four Friday, giving the Cubs walk with bases loaded in 10th inning, and a 2-1 win over the Brewers. Hard to believe a major league ump would miss such a critical pitch.
6) The great Bob Uecker threw out the first ball and sang Take Me Out to the Ball Game during the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley.
5) Giants led Houston 13-0 in third inning, as Sadowski tossed shutout ball for second consecutive start since being called up from the minors.
4) Only 15 of 63 strikes Scott Kazmir threw were put in play by Texas Friday night, which is part of why Kazmir only lasted five innings; his 13 swings/misses were the most in the major leagues last night.
3) Mariano Rivera has 500+ saves now, but only had 139 when he got to his 30th birthday; Francisco Rodriguez has 229 saves-- he isn't 30 yet.
2) Pretty sad when Sports Center runs features on Joey Chestnut and Kobiyashi to promote its telecast of Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, as if competitive eating was an actual sport. Its really kind of gross.
1) They even showed a guy named Crazy Legs Conti, who works for the Penthouse Gentlemen's Club in New York, but also competes in these eating contests. Guy looks like Weird Al Yankovic. What a country.
