Game of the day: Rays at Rangers
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers (+120, 10.5)

    East vs. West

The Rays and Rangers will hook up for the first time this season in Arlington Friday.

Only a half-game separates them in the American League standings, with the Rays holding the slim lead.

Tampa Bay took six of nine meetings a year ago, including four out of six in Texas. The Rays are now 11-5 in the last 16 matchups in the series.

    Pitching matchup

Game 1 matches Scott Kazmir against Tommy Hunter.

Kazmir made his first start since May 20 against Florida last Saturday. He was effective over five innings, giving up only four hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one.

The Rays left-hander was on a pitch count in that start, but should be able to work deeper into the ball game Friday.

Kazmir owns an ugly 7.28 ERA this season, but hasn't been nearly as shaky on the road, where he is 3-1 with an ERA just north of four.

In seven previous starts against the Rangers, Kazmir is undefeated. He helped the Rays go 3-0 against the Rangers last season, winning twice here in Texas.

Tommy Hunter's first taste of the big leagues was more sour than sweet.

In three starts with the Rangers last August, Hunter gave up six, five, and nine earned runs.

This year has gone much better for Hunter. In two starts this season, he has given up only five earned runs. The Rangers split those two games, defeating the A's 6-3 and losing to the Padres 2-0.

Not surprisingly, Hunter has never faced the Rays.

    Home on the range

The Rangers continue to make hay at home, where they're eight games above .500 this season.

The road hasn't been nearly as kind as Texas has suffered 18 losses compared to 17 victories.

They should have plenty of confidence after posting back-to-back wins against the rival Angels earlier this week, but don't tell that to Hank Blalock.

“If you think one game is more important than another, that means you’re not trying to win against a team with a worse record,” Blalock told the media. “You’ve got to take every game as serious as you can because once it gets later in the year, you start thinking about the games you let slip away.”

Even though Kazmir has owned them in the past, they have hit well against lefties at home this season, to the tune of a collective .284 BA.

    Rays on a roll

Things looked bleak for the defending AL champs back in May. Was their World Series run a fluke?

Since May 29, the Rays have looked every bit like the team that played into late October last season.

They're 21-9 over their last 30 games, pulling themselves within five games of the division leading Red Sox, and two-and-a-half games behind the Wild Card leading Yankees.

“We’re on a good roll right now,” Carl Crawford to reporters earlier this week. “Hopefully we can keep it up. We’re still climbing back up the standings. We’re just trying to get into a groove and stay there.”

They're still a losing club on the road at 18-23, but have won five of their last nine games away from Tropicana Field including back-to-back series wins in New York (Mets) and Toronto.

              WEEKEND POWER TRENDS
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major League Baseball reaches its halfway point of the 2009 season this weekend, and with the 4th of July holiday upon us, the sport will celebrate our Independence with a full slate of games. While the action doesn’t match any division leaders, or current playoff teams versus one another, there are still several intriguing series’ in which chasing clubs will be trying to make up key ground in various races. We’ll look a bit closer at some of those pairings. All three days this weekend will offer numerous baseball betting opportunities, so get prepared by utilizing our weekly Top Power Trends feature. You’ll find that at the conclusion of this piece. Good luck.

In the American League, two key series’ will garner most of the attention. In Minnesota, the Twins host the Tigers for three games, hoping to close the 3-game gap separating the clubs in the A.L. Central Division. As usual, the Twins gained some momentum by breezing through the N.L. in Interleague play, going 12-6. They will look to pick up where they left off back in mid-May against Detroit, when they swept the Tigers in three games. The current Central leaders are struggling a bit offensively, having topped the 5-run mark just four times in the last 20 games.

The other key A.L. series matches the Rays and Rangers from Arlington. Tampa bay, the defending A.L. champion, looked the part in a fabulous month of June, going 19-7 to move to 9-games over .500. However, the Rays still have a lot of ground to make up in the East Division, as Boston is setting a steady pace. The Rangers are still hanging around the top of the A.L. West and should get a huge boost this weekend with the expected return of Josh Hamilton to the lineup. Without him, they were 19-7 UNDER the total in June.

In the National League, the scuffling Cubs will continue a 4-game set against Milwaukee at Wrigley. In each of the past two years, Chicago used a home series around this time against the division-leading Brewers to build momentum. They will be looking for answers at the plate, as after leading the N.L. in runs scored in ’08, Chicago bats are hitting just .245 and producing just 4.15 runs per game. Milwaukee isn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard, but is getting a reliable effort from its rebuilt bullpen. The Brewers have been solid on the road this season, and boasted a 21-10 record against divisional foes heading into Thursday’s series opener.

The other key series to keep an eye on is in Philadelphia, where the Phillies welcome divisional rival New York for 3-games. The Mets have floundered without three of their biggest bats in the lineup and were just 9-18 in the month of June, yet because Philly hasn’t played well either, remain in striking distance. The Phillies will be looking to re-establish some home field advantage, as they have been horrific for bettors as hosts, going 13-22 while losing 17.9 units to date. The Mets own a 3-2 lead in the season series.

There’s other great action on the diamond to choose from as well. Be sure to take advantage of all the great info on the Matchup pages, then when you’re ready to take that next step toward baseball betting stardom, head over to the FoxSheets and put trends like these to work for you everyday:

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lady Luck: Today’s WNBA best bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Mystics at Atlanta Dream (-3.5, 164)

For the Mystics, there is no place like the road. Washington has been a force away from the MCI Center this season, tying Minnesota for the best road record in the league with an away mark of 3-2.

The reason for the team’s success on the road has been the play of its offense. The team has topped the 75-point plateau in four of its games in opponents’ gyms.

Pacing the Washington assault is guard Alana Beard, who averages 19.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. In a 77-71 win over Atlanta earlier this year, Beard dropped a game-high 27 points, making 11-of-13 free throws and 8-of-16 field goals.

Beard should give the Dream plenty of nightmares.

                    Pick: Washington +3.5

Chicago Sky at San Antonio Silver Stars (-6, 144.5)

It’s not often you see a 3-4 team a six-point favorite over a 6-3 squad in the hunt for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

But let me introduce you to the overachieving Chicago Sky. Taking advantage of a mediocre schedule and a 5-0 home record, the Sky’s overall mark masks a dreadful 1-3 road record and a suspect 4.5-point margin of victory.

Meantime, the Silver Stars record is deceiving, as star Becky Hammon (19.8 ppg) missed pair of losses competing for the Russian national team.

Her absence in those games is also another reason the team’s 70.4-point per game average is deceiving. Hammon might be a fake Russian, but the Silver Stars are for real.

                    Pick: Silver Stars -6

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Bettor's Overview of the WNBA So Far
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The WNBA betting season has almost a month's worth of games under its belt. That means we have enough data has been accrued to help sports bettors decipher which teams have been kind to the betting public and which haven't.

Let’s take a look at the best and worst WNBA teams, as well as the best ‘over' and ‘under' teams.

                      Who's hot?

Indiana Fever (6-2 ATS, 6-2 SU)

The Fever has proven to be the most lucrative wager in the WNBA throughout their first eight games by getting decent production at both ends of the court. The offense comes in ranked seventh in the league in scoring with an average of 74.9 points per game while the defense ranks third limiting opponents to 71.1 ppg

Purdue Boilermaker product Katie Douglas is the team's best scoring threat averaging 18.1 PPG, while Tennessee standout Tamika Catchings leads the team in rebounding (6.5/game) and steals (3.1/game).

Washington Mystics (5-2 ATS, 4-3 SU)

The second best bet in the women's league is surprisingly the Mystics led by head coach Julie Plank. This franchise struggled enormously a year ago, winning 10 of its 34 lined games while covering the number just 12 times.

This past season's overhaul of the team, which included replacing the general manager and head coach, has seen the Mystics already win four games. They started the season off 3-0 both SU (straight up) and ATS (against the spread) with wins against two of the Eastern Conference's best teams from a year ago, the Detroit Shock and Connecticut Sun.

Duke sensation Alana Beard is the offensive standout averaging close to 20 PPG (19.3), while Crystal Langhorne leads the league in rebounding hauling down an average of 8.4 per game.

                      Who's not?

Sacramento Monarchs (1-7 ATS, 1-7 SU)

Since winning the WNBA Championship back in 2005 and losing to the Detroit shock in the Finals the following season, the Monarchs have struggled losing in the Conference semifinals each of the last two seasons.

After compiling 18-16 SU and 18-15-1 ATS marks a year ago, the Monarchs have stumbled out of the gates losing seven of their first eight games both SU and ATS.

Since dropping a 71-61 decision in their season opener as 2-point home chalks against Seattle, the Monarchs have been underdogs every game since. Both the offense and defense ranks in the bottom half of the league.

Look for Sacramento to continue to struggle if they don't at the very least find their way at one end of the court.

Detroit Shock (2-5 ATS, 2-5 SU)

The Shock closed out their respective 2008 WNBA betting campaign in style by sweeping the San Antonio Silver Stars to capture the third championship in the franchise's history. The defense of the title has been rough to say the least.

Though it's only been outscored by an average of 2.4 PPG throughout its first seven games, Detroit's won and covered just two games for its wagering supporters. In the early going, it looks as if WNBA bettors should look to fade the Shock on the road (0-3 SU & ATS) and only look to play them at home (2-2 SU & ATS).

                      Lighting it up!

                      Phoenix Mercury (8-2 O/U)

The Mercury have closely resembled Phoenix Suns teams from the past that were all about outscoring their opponents and leaving a ton to be desired at the defensive end of the court.

Through their first 10 games of the season, the Mercury have scored a league best 90.4 PPG mostly due to having the league's second highest scorer in former UConn Husky Diana Taurasi.

That saidm they're the worst ranked defense of the 13 WNBA teams. If you're looking for some fast paced high scoring action, set your sights on the desert where the Mercury are 5-1 to the ‘over' on the year.

                      Snooze alert...

                      Los Angeles Sparks (2-6-1 O/U)

The Sparks have been all about defense to start their respective 2009 WNBA campaign. This ultimately has allowed sports bettors to cash the under at a 75 percent clip throughout their first nine games.

L.A. boasts the second-best defense in the league allowing an average of just 69.9 PPG while allowing opponents to convert at a 41.1 percent clip from the field. With the offense just barely surpassing the 70-point plateau (70.4 PPG), it's no wonder the Sparks have been the best ‘under' team to kickoff the WNBA season.

With the Sparks first six games averaging out to a 154-point ‘total', oddsmakers have since released each of their last two games at 137 meaning they've caught onto the Sparks ‘under' tendency. Be on the lookout for some value on the ‘over' in the coming weeks, especially against teams that are flawed defensively and excelled offensively.

The Tour de France starts tomorrow in Monaco. Lance Armstrong has unretired and is seeking his 8th championship.

Bees delay game for 52 minutes yesterday in San Diego.

Tomorrow is the 70th anniversary of the most famous speech in sports, Lou Gehrig's "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." The speech will be read at every Major League ballpark during the 7th inning stretch.

There goes the neighborhood. According to Bloomberg there could be a record 4 Jews in baseball's All Star Game: Kevin Youkilis (Boston), Ryan Braun (Milwaukee), Ian Kinsler (Texas) and pitcher Jason Marquis (Colorado).

                          2. Battle of the Superstars

Interesting long distance chatter between NFL great Jim Brown and Tiger Woods. Brown calls Tiger "terrible" when it comes to social issues. Tiger responds that his foundation helps millions of kids. There are those who believe the Michael Jordans, Derek Jeters and Tiger Woods' of the world should be less vanilla when it comes to activism, but the truth is they've all done their part in helping the less fortunate. While I greatly admire Brown and his passion, calling Tiger "terrible" comes off as unfair.

                          3. The Perfect Storm

If you think with two new baseball stadiums in New York and the economy in the tank, this was the "Perfect Storm," think again. As they say in sports, "wait til next year." Tons of season ticket holders who thought they would make a killing this season by re-selling their seats, took a bath. And it'll only get worse. The tickets are way over-priced and a season ticket holding friend of mine says for every Yankee game there are at least 11,000 seats available on Stub Hub. Season ticket holders will be bailing out next year in droves.

                          4. Friday Mailbag

R.Q. writes: "It is embarrassing to watch this crew of minor leaguers and over-the-hill players."
Editor's Note: Always nice to hear from Mets fans.

J.S. fumes: "I’m offended that Lorena Ochoa still chooses to have (and presumably accept the endorsement revenue from) a Citigroup logo on her hat. This doesn’t sit well with me considering OUR TARP money that went to this ‘financially challenged’ entity deemed too big to fail. I don’t feel anyone should be paid for wearing Citi’s
                          logo."
Editor's Note: I'm sure the Mets don't agree.

As for the story about poor sportsmanship on the handshake line at a kids ballgame, M.M. writes: My boys were all soccer players. We encountered lots of "unsportsmanlike" behavior. After a win, one player who shook my son's hand, spit in his face at the same time!"

R.K. made a good point when I talked about a harness racer who used bear grease to scare off the other horses. He asks, "If I knew my opponent was allergic, is it ethical or sportsmanlike for me to eat, say, a peanut butter sandwich, before the game, knowing it may incapacitate?" He wonders, where do you draw the line?
Editor's Note: The bad guys, and my readers, will always think up ingenious ways to cheat.

And as for the TV commercial for a casino at a racetrack where it appears a woman singer has a "thing" for a horse, T.B writes: "Maybe she was just looking for an inside tip!"
Editor's Note: What a lovely holiday thought.

                          5. Genius of the Week

Actually, lets make it Geniuses of the week. It's not unusual for a couple to decide they never want to see each other again. But on their wedding day? In Hannover Germany, a Polish couple tied the knot and then the fun began. A fight ensued which resulted in the groom trying to cut his bride's hair with a kitchen knife. Goodbye marriage. The groom spent his wedding night in a homeless shelter. On that happy note, have a great 4th of July holiday everyone.

Happy Birthday: Former outfielder Moises Alou. 43.
                          Bonus Birthday: Tom Cruise. 47.

Today in Sports: Jackie Robinson becomes the first black inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. 1962.
Bonus Event: Hey Abbott! Abbott and Costello debut on NBC Radio.
                          1940.

The Top 5 is going on summer vacation next week. We'll return Monday July 13th. Have a great week everyone!
