Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs [8:05 PM ET]

Brewers: The Brewers are playing their first road game in 11 days. They have been all or nothing hitting during their past six games, getting shut out twice while averaging seven runs in the other four contests. Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder have combined to drive 131 runs, the most of any teammates in the majors. However, the Brewers haven’t received consistency from the rest of their hitters. They’ll take on the Cubs having won 16 of their last 21 games during the first game of a series. Seth McClung (3-1, 3.55 ERA) starts. McClung allowed three runs on six hits in four innings on Saturday against the Giants in his first start of the season. McClung didn’t factor in the decision, a 7-6 Milwaukee victory. The right-hander has made 10 relief appearances against the Cubs. He is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA versus them in 17 2/3 innings of work.

The 2 teams are 13-6-2 to the Over in their last 21 head-to-head meetings.

Key injuries - Richie Weeks (wrist) is on the DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cubs (-$1.45, O/U 9): The Cubs ranked first in the National League in pitching during June with a 3.18 ERA. Still the Cubs went 11-14 during the month, their worst month since August of 2007. The problem for the Cubs is lack of scoring. They’ve scored seven runs in their last four games being shut out twice during this span. That could change once Aramis Ramirez returns to the lineup, which could come Monday. Cubs starter Ryan Dempster (4-5, 4.09 ERA) is off his second-shortest stint of the season. The right-hander gave up five runs on eight hits over five innings in an 8-7 road loss to the White Sox last Saturday. The Cubs are 0-5 in Dempster’s last five outings and 0-6 in his last six starts versus National League Central Division foes. Dempster hasn’t won on the road since April 12, but is 3-1 with a 4.14 ERA at Wrigley Field.

The Under has cashed 17 of the past 25 times the Cubs have faced a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Aramis Ramirez (shoulder) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Orioles: The Orioles have not fared well versus American League West clubs, especially when facing the Angels. Baltimore has lost 20 of its past 27 meetings with the Angels. The Orioles are 5-16 in their last 21 games when meeting AL West teams. Baltimore is 29-28 when playing at night. The Orioles’ record is so bad because they are a major-league worst 6-15 during day games. The Orioles have lost 10 of the last 14 times Jeremy Guthrie (6-7, 5.11 ERA) has taken the mound. Guthrie, though, hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in any of his last four starts. He beat Washington in his previous outing on Saturday, 6-3, surrendering three earned runs and five hits in five innings. Center fielder Adam Jones expects to play after missing Wednesday’s game because he was shaken up on Tuesday following a collision with the wall.

The Orioles are 14-38 in their last 52 games as a road underdog.
The Over is 7-2 in Guthrie’s last nine road starts versus a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - Adam Jones (head) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Angels (-$1.60, O/U 9.5 under -$1.15): Closer Brian Fuentes has been good, but the Angels have the worst bullpen in the majors with an ERA of 5.41. That means right-hander John Lackey (2-3, 5.06 ERA) probably is going to need to pitch well against an Orioles lineup laced with dangerous left-handers. The Angels have been favored in each of Lackey’s last five home starts – and have lost each time. Los Angeles is 5-11 in Lackey’s past 16 overall starts. Lackey, however, is off his best start of the season. The 31-year-old held Arizona to no runs on five hits in seven innings pitching on the road last Saturday. Lackey struck out nine and walked three, but didn’t factor in the decision. Lackey looked strong late in the game punching out six of the last seven batters he faced. Lackey is 6-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 10 career meetings against the Orioles.

The Over is 10-3-1 the past 14 times the Angels have been favored.

              Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total of the Day)

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sacramento Monarchs at Minnesota Lynx (-6.5, 159.5)

Yes, the Monarchs are that bad.

The worst team in the league continues its shuffle toward the top draft pick by taking its 1-8 record on the road. Sacramento is 0-6 on the road this season and is allowing a staggering 79.1 points per game as it has topped the total five times in nine games.

Minnesota (7-3), which sits alone atop the Western Conference standings, has a ridiculous 9-1 over/under mark as it averages 85.3 points per game, second-best in the league. There will be plenty of points in this game, but don’t look for Sacramento to be scoring them.

                Pick: Over

Detroit Shock at New York Liberty (-3.5, 143.5)

When these two teams meet tonight there will be a title on the line: the loser gets crowned worst team in the Eastern Conference.

The Shock have battled suspensions and injuries but have floundered to a 2-5 record as they have lost four of five and are averaging a horrendous 72 points per game. It doesn’t get much prettier for the Liberty, which at 2-6, has failed to bounce back from losing its first three games because of a dreadful offense. And if you think the Shock can’t score, wait until you see New York’s feeble attempts to hit its hideous, 70.4-point average.

                Pick: Liberty

Former boxing champ and Mayor of Managua, Alexis Arguello, was found shot to death at his home in Nicaragua. It was reportedly suicide. He was 57.

                    2. The Conquered Hero?

Something new in baseball tomorrow night. A superstar returns after a 50-game in season suspension for drugs. Manny Ramirez is eligible to play for the Dodgers in San Diego. So how do you react to a cheat? They'll boo in San Diego, and boo some more in New York next week when he plays the Mets. But when he returns to Dodger Stadium on July 16th expect a standing ovation. That's the way it goes. Just like Barry Bonds in San Francisco. He's a creep, but he's our creep.
By the way, the Dodgers are bringing back the left field promotion called Mannywood when Ramirez returns. Shouldn't they call it Mannyroid?

                    3. A Matter of Time

Thanks to subscriber Eric H. for passing this along. A 13-year old football player has "committed" to play at Tennessee. His older brother is a star for the Vols. While the "commitment" isn't actually legal, where is this going to lead?
It calls to mind the movie City Slickers as Bruno Kirby's character dates younger and younger women. Quips Billy Crystal's character, "soon, you'll be dating sperm."

                    4. Not so Sweet Lou

Sports Illustrated asked players which Manager they would least like to play for. The winner, or loser, Lou Piniella of the Cubs. Wow. How could you not want to play for Lou? Isn't he passionate? Doesn't he kick and throw bases with the best of them? Didn't he make one of the great "saves" in baseball with his play in right during the playoff game at Fenway Park in 1978? I guess none of that matters. I'm just partial. I once sat at the same table with Lou at a bar mitzvah, and there's not another sports figure I can say that about.

                    5. Touchdown Cowboys!

Butch Franklin lives near Dallas. He is mentally challenged and makes about $30 a week doing odd jobs. Thieves recently broke into his apartment stealing his TV, PlayStation and Dallas Cowboys memorabilia. Friends replaced what they could, but how do you replace sports memorabilia? Easy. A couple of Dallas Cowboys showed up bringing tons of signed stuff not only from the players but from their famed cheerleaders. Very cool.
