    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, June 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants and Cardinals both send big guns to the mound in St. Louis, and the Red Sox try to pick up a win in Baltimore.

Meeting up in the Junior Circuit . . .

John Smoltz (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will make his second start as a member of the Red Sox on Tuesday night when his team plays on the road against the Orioles and Rich Hill (3-2, 6.03 ERA). Righthander Smoltz was tagged with a loss in his season debut against the Nationals last time out, allowing five earned runs over five innings of work. Lefthander Hill also took a loss in his last trip to the mound, getting knocked around for six earned runs over his 4 1-3 innings by the Marlins.

Elsewhere around the American League on Tuesday it'll be Seattle at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Toronto, the Angels at Texas, Minnesota at Kansas City, Detroit at Oakland, and the White Sox at Cleveland. Clayton Richard (2-1, 4.33 ERA) will get the ball for Chicago; Richard has a no-decision in each of his last four outings. Cliff Lee (4-6, 2.92 ERA) will be on the hill for the Tribe; Lee has given up more than three earned runs in just one of his last 10 trips to the mound.

Taking the field in the Senior Circuit . . .

It'll be Randy Johnson (7-5, 4.68 ERA) vs. Chris Carpenter (5-2, 1.78 ERA) on Tuesday night when the Cardinals play host to the Giants. Lefthander Johnson impressed in a victory over the Athletics last time out, surrendering just one earned run on six hits over his seven innings of work. Righthander Carpenter was beaten by the Mets in his most recent start, despite allowing just three earned runs over seven innings. St. Louis is 1-3 in Carpenter's last four outings.

Also on the National League slate for Tuesday: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Washington at Florida, Philadelphia at Atlanta, Arizona at Cincinnati, Houston at San Diego, Colorado at the Dodgers, and the Mets at Milwaukee. New York will be turning to ace Johan Santana (9-5, 3.08 ERA) in that matchup; Santana beat the Cardinals last time out, allowing two runs over seven innings. The Brewers will counter with Mike Burns (0-1, 3.72 ERA); Milwaukee is 0-2 in his two outings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA offers up three games on Tuesday night as the league closes out its June schedule: Washington at San Antonio, Sacramento at Chicago, and Minnesota at Atlanta. The Lynx have won two straight games despite missing star guard Seimone Augustus (who is out for the season with a knee injury). Minnesota pounded Phoenix 109-80 in their last outing on Saturday; Roneeka Hodges and Candice Wiggins each poured in 22 points for the Lynx in the victory.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

The six toughest college football schedules for 2009, according to the great Phil Steele college football magazine

      6) Arkansas-- Road games- Bama, Florida, Ole Miss, LSU, so they're 0-4 before they start. Playing Texas A&M in Dallas. Good luck.

      5) Minnesota-- Syracuse-Air Force-Cal before Big 11 play starts, so a 2-1 start there is pretty much essential.

      4) Mississippi State-- Non-league home games vs Georgia Tech and Houston will be interesting- they go to both Vandy and Kentucky.

      3) Oklahoma-- Play 'canes in Miami, BYU in Jerry Jones' stadium, so they're not ducking anyone. Tulsa isn't a bad ballclub either.

      2) Florida State-- Just in September, Seminoles play Miami, visit BYU and host South Florida. Finale at Florida-- this is a tough schedule.

      1) South Carolina-- Playing NC State, Clemson out of conference is a little ambitious-- they play two ESPN Thursday night games.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      Late Night Update

Andre Ethier homered at 2:21am ET in the bottom of 13th inning, giving Dodgers a walkoff 4-2 win over Colorado, just 4th loss for the Rockies in their last 24 games (1-9 last ten against LA).

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Reason #4,598 why your kid should throw lefty-- Bruce Chen is in the major leagues again, this time with the Royals. Now on his 10th club in 11 major league seasons, Chen made his first big league start in three years in Pittsburgh Saturday night-- he has a 35-38 career record, and as recently as 2005, Chen won 15 games for the Orioles.

      12) Update on Jason Giambi, who hit .342 for the A's in 2001, with 38 homers, 120 RBI, then sold out to the Bronx Bombers, where he went in the ashcan after the steroids stuff came to light: He is hitting .200 so far this season, with 10 homers, 38 RBI. He is a horrendous first baseman; even though you hear he's a good guy, he's stealing Mr Wolff's $$$.

      11) How can the A's not have a decent 1B or 3B? I mean, Giambi is a complete stiff now, worse on defense than offense-- when Mark Ellis came off the DL, he moved Adam Kennedy to 3B, so Oakland has two 2B in its starting lineup, which is just freakin' terrific. They wasted ton of money on Eric Chavez, which is part of why they're terrible now.

      10) You'll see Matt Holliday's numbers go way up as soon as he leaves Oakland-- A's just don't have any decent tablesetters in front of him, and they have a guy hitting .200 behind him. If he has a half a brain, Holliday signs with a real good team, and finds himself in middle of potent lineup next year where he can show once again just how good he is.

      9) Arizona scored one run in five of Doug Davis' nine home starts.

      8) Mets' Fernando Nieve had rough night at Miller Park in 10-6 loss at Milwaukee; Brewers swung at 31 of his 68 pitches in 3.1 innings-- on the 18 balls they put in play, Brewers got 11 hits. Not good.

      7) Washington Nationals made a pitching change in 8th inning Monday, replacing Ron Villone with Julian Tavarez; Villone has pitched for dozen big league teams, Tavarez for eleven. They might be the best packers in the major leagues, either them or their wives.

      6) Villone has pitched in 45 different major league ballparks.

      5) This is how good Josh Greinke has been for Kansas City this year; Royals scored two runs in three of Greinke's starts- they won all three.

      4) Cardinals scored three or less runs in Joel Pineiro's last nine starts.

      3) Astros walked Adrian Gonzalez in 4th inning with first base open and two outs, leading 1-0. If Padres keep Gonzalez, and it looks like they're going to, they have to find decent hitter to bat behind him. Kouzmanoff isn't respected enough that they'll pitch to Gonzalez very often.

      2) I watch a ton of baseball, love the Extra Innings package, and as I sit here every night, it is obvious that two things are way down this season: attendance and scoring. Teams that fall out of contention are going to be playing in front of tons of empty seats the second half of the season.

      1) Watching CNN the last week, I'm thinking being rich and famous ain't all its cracked up to be. Not that I wouldn't like to give it a try.......

        SCOREBOARD

        Tuesday, June 30

Los Angeles Angels at Texas (8:05 p.m. EDT). The Angels' Joe Saunders (8-4, 3.66 ERA) gave up seven runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings in his last start in Arlington on May 15 in the Rangers' 10-8 win. He will be opposed by Texas' Scott Feldman (5-2, 4.06).

        STARS

        Monday

        - Tim Lincecum, Giants, threw a two-hitter for his third complete game of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.37 in San Francisco's 10-0 win over St. Louis.

        - Andre Ethier, Dodgers, hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning to give Los Angeles a 4-2 victory over Colorado.

        - Roy Oswalt, Astros, pitched a two-hitter and retired his final 18 batters for his second complete game in three outings, leading Houston to a 3-1 win at San Diego. Oswalt also helped himself with two hits at the plate.

        - Casey McGehee, Brewers, hit his first career grand slam to make up for an earlier fielding gaffe in Milwaukee's 10-6 win over the New York Mets.

        - Miguel Olivo, Royals, went 3 for 4 with a homer, a triple and two RBIs in Kansas City's 4-2 victory over Minnesota.

        - Gavin Floyd, White Sox, shut out Cleveland on five singles over 7 2-3 innings and Chicago held on to win 6-3.

        SEE YOU SOON

Ready or not, Manny Ramirez is headed back to the big leagues. The suspended slugger played what is expected to be his final minor league rehab game for Class-A Inland Empire, going 1 for 3 with two strikeouts. He is eligible to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night in San Diego after serving a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy.

        BIRD MEN

Boston starter Jon Lester continued his dominance of the Orioles with a 4-0 victory. Lester is 8-0 with a 2.18 ERA against Baltimore in 10 career starts. The only other pitcher to win his first eight decisions against the Orioles was Todd Stottlemyre (1988-93). Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon also has been masterful against Baltimore, going 20 for 20 on save chances with a 0.39 ERA. He got the final out with two on to earn his 132nd career save, tying Bob Stanley for the most in Red Sox history.

        WELCOME BACK

Carl Crawford hit a two-run homer and Tampa Bay ruined Roy Halladay's return with its sixth straight victory, 4-1 over Toronto. Halladay (10-2) came in having won his past seven decisions, the longest streak in the majors, but lost for the first time since April 21. He was starting for the first time since June 12, when he left his start against Florida with a sore groin that landed him on the disabled list. Halladay allowed two runs and five hits in six innings against the Rays, walking two and striking out seven.

        WILD WEST

Juan Rivera and Kendry Morales hit consecutive homers that put Los Angeles ahead and the AL West-leading Angels beat Texas 5-2 for their sixth straight victory. The Rangers have lost eight of 11, a slide that cost them the division lead they had held since May 5 - by 5 1/2 games four weeks ago. Los Angeles, which has won 13 of 16 overall, took over first place Saturday and now leads by 2 1/2 games.

        BACK IN THE SWING

Mark Ellis hit a two-run homer in his second game back from a two-month injury absence, and Ryan Sweeney homered and drove in two runs for Oakland in a 7-1 victory over Detroit. The last-place Athletics snapped a five-game skid with a rare 11-hit effort from a club that's last in the AL in batting average, hits, total bases and homers.

        ON THE MEND

Ervin Santana could be back in the rotation for the Los Angeles Angels by the weekend. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the right-hander had no problems during a 45-pitch rehab assignment Sunday night in the Arizona Summer League. An All-Star last season, Santana is 1-3 with a 7.47 ERA in six starts this year. He missed the first six weeks of the season with a sprained ligament in his right elbow and has been out since June 12 due to an inflamed right triceps.

        SIDELINED

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell had fluid drained from his ailing right hip Monday in Boston, and received an injection that might relieve inflammation in his surgically repaired joint. The Red Sox will wait at least a couple of days to determine whether the treatment was successful or whether Lowell needs to be placed on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona said before Monday night's 4-0 loss to the Orioles.

        STATS

Andre Ethier leads the Dodgers with 15 home runs this season, 14 at home. He also has four walk-off hits. ... The Rockies are the only team in the majors without an extra-inning victory (0-4). ... Giants ace Tim Lincecum leads the majors with 132 strikeouts, in 114 innings. Over his past eight starts, the 2008 NL Cy Young Award winner is 5-1 with a 1.27 ERA. ... Roy Oswalt improved to 10-2 with a 2.68 ERA against the Padres in 15 career appearances, including 13 starts. His .833 winning percentage is the highest among active pitchers with at least 10 decisions against San Diego. ... The Cubs have won 20 of their last 25 games in Pittsburgh. ... Ricky Nolasco retired his final 13 batters and won his third straight start for Florida, which is 7-0 against Washington.

        SO LONG

Houston placed pitcher Brandon Backe on waivers. The 31-year-old right-hander, who is 0-0 with a 10.38 ERA in 13 innings for the Astros this season, rejected an assignment to Triple-A Round Rock. He will likely become a free agent and receive all of his $1.5 million salary after three days. Backe was a regular member of Houston's postseason rotation in 2004 and '05, pitching well in October both years and helping the Astros reach the 2005 World Series. He tossed seven shutout innings in Game 4 of that Series against the Chicago White Sox.

        SPEAKING

"We're a below-average team. Period.'' - New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel after his injury-depleted club fell under .500 (37-38) for the first time since May 5 with a 10-6 loss in Milwaukee.

1995 - Eddie Murray of the Cleveland Indians became the second switch-hitter and the 20th player in baseball history to reach 3,000 hits when he singled against the Minnesota Twins. Murray joined Pete Rose, the career hits leader with 4,256, as the only switch-hitters to get 3,000.

2008 - Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate, hitting his second grand slam in four games and adding a solo shot to lead the Chicago White Sox past Cleveland, 9-7.

Today's birthdays: Delwyn Young 28; Chan Ho Park 36; Garret Anderson 38.

          This Day in Baseball

On June 30 in Baseball History...

1908 - Cy Young's third career no-hitter is an 8-0 Boston win over New York. At 41 years and three months, he is the oldest pitcher to turn the no-hit trick. Nolan Ryan will beat him in 1990 at the age of 43.

1959 - In Chicago, two balls are in play at the same time. On a wild pitch from pitcher Bob Anderson, Stan Musial draws a walk. As the pitch gets by catcher Sammy Taylor, Musial tries for second base. Umpire Vic Delmore puts another ball in play by mistake. Taylor promptly throws the ball into center field. Third baseman Al Dark, who chased down the original ball, throws to shortstop Ernie Banks, who tags out a confused Musial. After a 10-minute conference, the umpires agree that Musial is out. Delmore will be fired because of the boner.

1962 - With the aid of 13 strikeouts and a Frank Howard home run, Sandy Koufax no-hits Bob Miller and the Mets 5-0 in Los Angeles.

1970 - A sellout crowd of 51,050 is on hand for the dedication of Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, but Hank Aaron spoils the show as he hits the park's first home run. The Braves win 8-2.

1978 - Larry Doby becomes the second black major league manager, replacing Bob Lemon as skipper of the White Sox. Chicago has a 34-40 record at the time, and will go 37-50 the rest of the way.

1988 - Alarmed by the White Sox' threatened move to St. Petersburg, Florida, lawmakers in Illinois grant state subsidies for a new stadium to replace venerable but decaying Comiskey Park.

1994 - Giants center fielder Darren Lewis commits his first major league error to break his record of 392 flawless games in the outfield.

1995 - Eddie Murray collects his 3,000th career hit against Minnesota's Mike Trombley in a 4-1 Cleveland win at the Metrodome. The Indians slugger is the 20th player to reach the milestone and the third in franchise history to do it wearing a Cleveland uniform.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Florida Marlins (-153, 9.5)

Back at .500 following Monday's victory, the Florida Marlins have been anything but average against the Washington Nationals lately.

The Marlins look for their ninth consecutive victory over the Nationals and 10th straight home series win against them on Tuesday night when they continue a three-game set at Land Shark Stadium.

Florida (39-39) defeated Washington 4-2 on Monday, snapping a three-game slide behind a solid outing from Ricky Nolasco. The right-hander gave up two runs and four hits over eight innings, winning his third consecutive start.

"It just feels good to have that feeling,'' Nolasco said after setting down the final 13 Nationals he faced. "I'm just trying to be consistent. That's the main goal.''

Since Sept. 11, 2007, Florida is 23-3 versus Washington. The Marlins have not lost a series to the Nationals at home since dropping two of three from April 14-16, 2006.

Hanley Ramirez needs to drive in a run Tuesday to set a franchise record with an RBI in nine consecutive contests. The Marlins shortstop - a lifetime .362 hitter at home versus the Nationals - is batting .424 (14 for 33) with four homers and 18 RBIs during this stretch.

                  Pick: Florida -153

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (+116, 10)

As excited as he was about his Boston Red Sox debut, John Smoltz is looking forward to getting back into a normal routine.

The veteran right-hander looks for his first AL victory on Tuesday night at Camden Yards where the AL East-leading Red Sox go for their ninth straight win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Making his season debut and first major league start not in an Atlanta Braves uniform, the 42-year-old Smoltz (0-1, 9.00 ERA) allowed four runs in a 34-pitch first inning before settling down in Thursday's 9-3 loss at Washington.

"This was bigger than one start,'' said Smoltz, who went 210-147 with 154 saves for the Braves from 1988-2008.

Smoltz struck out the side in the fifth as he finished with five runs and seven hits allowed.

"There's been so much going on in the last eight days, I'm kind of glad it's over so I can resume the five-day rotation and do what every pitcher does,'' he said, "and that's make improvements from game to game."

Smoltz is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles. This is his third appearance and first career start at Camden Yards. Smoltz was 2 for 2 in save opportunities in Baltimore in 2004, when he recorded 44 saves.

"He's a warrior," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said of Smoltz on the team's Web site, "and a big game pitcher. I'd love to talk to him. He's got to be one tough son of a gun, mentally, to be able to come back from the injuries that he's had and be so successful in one area and then another. The guy's a horse."

Boston (47-29) improved to 5-2 on its nine-game trip with Monday's 4-0 series-opening victory over the Orioles.

                  Pick: Boston -124

                    Slumping

                    Derek Lowe (Atlanta Braves)

Derek Lowe (7-6, 4.53) will try to pick up where Hanson left off as he attempts to end a personal three-game losing streak, during which he's posted a 12.34 ERA.

The right-hander lasted only three innings Thursday, surrendering eight runs and 11 hits in an 11-7 loss to the New York Yankees.

"Terrible," Lowe said. "Three in a row. Obviously, (Thursday) was a disaster."

Lowe, though, is 5-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last seven starts against the Phillies. He was outstanding against them April 5, yielding two hits in eight scoreless innings of a 4-1 win.

                    Rich Hill (Baltimore Orioles)

Baltimore gives the ball to left-hander Rich Hill (3-2, 6.03), who looks for his first win at home in 2009. In his last start, Hill yielded six runs and a season-high eight hits over 4 1-3 innings in Thursday's 11-3 loss at Florida. Hill gave up two homers after surrendering only one in his first seven starts.

Hill, who has pitched 4 1-3 innings or fewer in four of eight starts, has no record and a 12.27 ERA in two starts at Camden Yards. This is his first appearance against Boston.

The Orioles' last win over the Red Sox was 11-6 at home on Aug. 20, 2008.

                    Clayton Richard (Chicago White Sox)

The White Sox starters have posted a 2.73 ERA their last 14 games, and they look to left-hander Clayton Richard (2-1, 4.33) to continue that trend.

Richard, however, has not made it through six innings since earning a win May 29 in Kansas City, and is 0-1 with a 6.04 ERA in his last five starts. He lasted 4 1-3 innings Thursday against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and was pulled after allowing four runs and hitting three batters.

Richard made it only 3 1-3 innings May 12 in Cleveland and is 0-1 with a 8.59 ERA in two starts against Cleveland - both at Progressive Field.

                    Streaking

                    Dan Haren (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Haren will try to help the Diamondbacks end a season-high five-game slide after they fell 12-8 to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. They last dropped six in a row Sept. 5-10.

The NL's ERA leader didn't get much help in his last trip to the mound Wednesday, allowing two runs and four hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 2-1 loss to Texas. Haren had gone 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA in his previous five starts.

"I know it's a broken record, but I go out to give the team the best chance to win. I go out with a plan, and I work hard in between starts, and I go out and execute that plan," Haren told the Diamondbacks' official Web site. "Wins and losses, I put that aside. I'm very proud of the way I have pitched my first 15 starts, and if I can have another 20 or 18 starts like that, I'd be very happy at the end of the year."

Haren gave up three runs and six hits, including a homer to Phillips, in seven innings of a 3-1 loss to the Reds on May 12. The right-hander fell to 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA in five games - four starts - against them.

                    Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals)

The Cardinals will have ace Chris Carpenter on the mound Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, where he'll square off with Randy Johnson and the Giants in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners as the teams continue their four-game set.

Carpenter (5-2, 1.78 ERA), who won the NL Cy Young Award in 2005, will have to hope for a better fate than he experienced in his most recent start. Matched up against two-time winner Johan Santana, Carpenter gave up three runs and four hits over seven innings and suffered a 3-2 loss.

"The guy's no slouch,'' Carpenter said. "He knows how to pitch.''

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Mariners: Seattle is playing well, winning nine of its last 12. However, the Mariners have a bad history playing on the road against the Yankees and will be minus star third baseman Adrian Beltre. He’s expected to miss from six to eight weeks following surgery to remove bone spurs from his left shoulder. The Mariners also are without injured shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who is on the DL with a knee injury. The Mariners have lost 20 of their past 27 games in New York. This is their first game at the new Yankee Stadium. Converted reliever Brandon Morrow (0-3, 5.64 ERA) gets the start. This will be his fourth start following 16 relief appearances. His last outing, against San Diego, was his best start of the season. The right-hander limited San Diego to three runs and six hits in five innings during Seattle’s 4-3 victory.

The Mariners are 14-32 in their last 46 road games versus a right-handed starter.
The Under is 19-7-1 in Seattle’s last 27 road contests.

Key Injuries - Adrian Beltre (shoulder) is out and Yuniesky Betancourt (knee) is on the DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Yankees (-$2.50, O/U 10 under -$1.20): The Yankees have beaten Seattle eight straight times at home, averaging nine runs and batting .348 during their winning streak. The Yankees have defeated the Mariners in nine of their last 11 meetings. Overall, New York has won five in a row. The Yankees are 15-7 in their last 22 games. Right-hander Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 3.81 ERA) earned a win in his last outing, giving up three runs – two earned – and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of an 8-4 Yankees win against Atlanta on Wednesday. The Yankees have won eight of the past 10 times Chamberlain has pitched at home. Chamberlain has never faced the Mariners. The Yankees lost in their lone matchup last season against Seattle starter Brandon Morrow. The Yankees were held to one run and one hit in 7 2/3 innings by Morrow at Seattle last Sept. 5.

The Yankees are 11-4 during their last 15 home games versus a right-handed starter.
The Under is 13-6-1 in New York’s past 20 games.

Key Injuries - Left fielder Johnny Damon is questionable because of illness.

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (Side of the Day)

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves [7:10 PM ET]

Phillies: The Phillies love playing at Turner Field, having won 14 of their last 17 there, including going 9-0 last season. Still, Philadelphia is 3-9 in its last 12 games and three-time All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins is hitless in his last 19 at-bats. Rollins, a career .274 hitter, is batting .211 this season. He’s expected to start after sitting out the Phillies’ past four games in an effort to finally get going. Joe Blanton (4-4, 5.06 ERA) is on the mound. The Phillies have lost his past four starts, providing him with just nine runs during that span. Blanton was solid in his last outing, giving up two runs and six hits, while fanning 10 in seven innings during a loss on Wednesday to Tampa Bay. Blanton is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in three career starts versus Atlanta. The Phillies are 7-3 in Blanton’s past 10 road starts.

The Phillies are 14-5 in their last 19 road games versus a right-handed starter.
The Over is 8-3-2 in Blanton’s past 13 games against National League East clubs.

Key Injuries - Raul Ibanez (groin) is on the DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Braves (-$1.30, O/U 8.5 under -$1.20): The Braves have dropped 20 of their last 26 home contests to the Phillies. Braves starter Derek Lowe is seeking to end a personal three-game losing streak, during which he’s posted a 12.34 ERA. He lasted only three innings on Thursday, while yielding eight runs and 11 hits to the Yankees in an 11-7 loss. The Braves have lost five of Lowe’s past six starts. Lowe, however, has a good recent history against the Phillies. He’s 5-0 versus Philadelphia with a 2.14 ERA in his last seven starts against the Phillies. Lowe was extremely sharp facing the Phillies on April 5 in a 4-1 victory. The right-hander held the Phillies scoreless for his eight innings of work, allowing just two hits. Chipper Jones is only 11-for-61 (.180) in his last 17 games with two RBIs. The under has cashed in eight of Atlanta’s last 10 home games.

The Under is 25-10-4 in Atlanta’s last 39 games versus a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Nate McClouth (hamstring) and Yunel Escobar (hip) are questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Even their worst offensive performance of the season couldn't keep the Chicago Sky from extending the best home start in franchise history. The WNBA's worst team may not be able to stop them, either.

The Sky look to improve to 5-0 at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday when they take on the Sacramento Monarchs, owners of the league's worst record.

Chicago (5-3), which hasn't finished with a winning record in its first three seasons of existence, is in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind Indiana. Almost all of that success can be attributed to the Sky's play at home, where they improved to a franchise-record 4-0 on Saturday, beating Washington 68-63.

The Sky won despite shooting a season-low 37.5 percent for the game, and scoring only eight points in the opening quarter. Candice Dupree led the way with 23 points, while Jia Perkins added 14 points and eight steals, and Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"It's nice to have more than one player who likes to put the team on her back,'' Dupree said. "Syl had some huge rebounds and I was trying to crash the offensive boards. It was a total team effort.''

Chicago's effort has been vastly improved at home, where it went 17-34 over its previous three seasons. The Sky are averaging fewer points at home (72.8) than on the road (79.3), but they are giving up an average of 26 fewer points at the UIC Pavilion.

"This year we're more consistent (at home)," Fowles said. "Anytime last year it might have been 'Yeah, whatever,' but we're very focused this year and want to win."

Fowles and the Sky could have an easy time against Sacramento (1-7), which is winless in five road games including the first three of its current five-game trip.

The Monarchs average 72.4 points per game - fifth-fewest in the WNBA - and they've been held to 69.0 points on the road. Sacramento has also lost five in a row overall, including an 86-72 defeat at Detroit on Sunday. It closes this trip Thursday at Minnesota.

                            Pick: Under 144

Washington Mystics at San Antonio Silver Stars (-3, 146)

Becky Hammon's return has given the San Antonio Silver Stars an immediate lift. Now she'll try to help the defending Western Conference champions move above .500 for the first time this season Tuesday night when they host the Washington Mystics.

Hammon missed two games for San Antonio (3-3) earlier this month while playing with the Russian national team in the European women's championships. Without her, the Silver Stars suffered double-digit losses at New York and Connecticut.

San Antonio has won both games since its leading scorer returned, beating Phoenix 91-87 last Tuesday and defeating Sacramento 62-52 on Friday. After scoring 19 points against the Mercury, Hammon had a season-high 26 on Friday to go with her five rebounds, six assists and five steals.

"I thought Becky really thought the game out well, as she put us in some situations that were really good," Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said.

Hughes' team jumped out to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but had to hold off a rally by Sacramento in the fourth. The Silver Stars shot only 39.7 percent, but outscored the Monarchs 13-3 at the free-throw line. Hammon was 10 of 10 at the line.

Despite scoring fewer than 65 points for the fourth time this season, San Antonio is hoping Hammon's return will improve an offense which is among the league's worst at 69.0 points per game.

Hammon averaged 24.0 points as the Silver Stars won both meetings last season with Washington (4-3).

The Mystics were held below 75 points for the first time this year in their last game, falling 68-63 at Chicago on Saturday for their second straight loss following a 4-1 start.

                            Pick: Under 146

                              Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 30, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

They are down to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Serena, Federer, Roddick and Andy Murray are all alive. Venus is the first into the semis.
The Centre Court roof was closed for for the first time yesterday because of rain during a match between Amelie Mauresmo and Dinara Safina. The roof closing received a standing ovation. I can only imagine how they'd react if they saw a Zamboni in person.
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming could miss all of next season with his broken foot, and it might be career threatening.
The Mets hold their breath as star outfielder Carlos Beltran goes to Vail Colorado for a 2nd opinion on his injured knee.
One of the most common misspellings on the internet is, "paperview boxing" instead of pay-per-view boxing.

                              2. Babe-a-licious

Say it ain't so. Which women get to play on Centre Court Wimbledon? Babes, that's who. They called it the "Battle of the Babes" when Victoria Azarenka from Belarus played against Sorana Cirstea from Romania. They were seeded 8th and 28th. The second seed, Serena Williams was shuttled off to a side court. Same thing happened to the top seed Dinara Safina. If you'd like to judge for yourself if you consider Azarenka and Cirstea to be babes, click through: Len Berman
By the way, Azarenka has made it to the quarterfinals so she's not just a pretty face.

                              3. Rainbow Card

A Turkish soccer ref has been fired. Then it was leaked to the media that he was gay. So what did the ref, Halil Ibrahim Dincdag, do? He fought back. He sued and went public saying "The crowds shout 'faggot' at referees whose decisions they don't like. Well, here I am." Other refs have come to his support, fans are signing petitions on his behalf. The Turkish John Madden of soccer announcers chimed in, "I reckon would have a tendency to give more penalties to good-looking, tough footballers."
Keep the ref, fire the announcer.

                              4. Value Ad-ed

So it's really starting to annoy me. I'm listening to the ballgame on radio and when some player is safe at home the announcer without missing a beat says "you can be safe at home too with some kind of insurance...blah blah." But in truth its always been that way. Marty Glickman's successful basketball shots were "Good, like Nedick's." And Mel Allen's Yankee home runs were Ballantine blasts. I guess I'm just getting cranky.

                              5. Fundamentals

In Portland Maine a man tried to run over his wife with a dump truck. He missed and crashed into some trees. He fled on foot, and was later caught. Sounds like yet another major leaguer who botched the hit and run.

Happy Birthday: Swimmer Michael Phelps. 24.
Bonus Birthday: Boxer Mike Tyson. 43.

Today in Sports: Sandy Koufax pitched the first of his 4 no-hitters against the Mets (who else?) 1962.
Bonus Event: The first Corvette rolled off the assembly line. Pricetag: $3250. 1953.
