    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, June 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Boston tries to get a win out of their knuckleballer, the Mets host the Yankees, and the Cubs and White Sox meet up.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Red Sox will send Tim Wakefield (9-3, 4.47 ERA) to the mound in search of his 10th win of the season on Saturday in Atlanta against the Braves and Javier Vazquez (5-6, 3.18 ERA). Boston has picked up a win in each of righthander Wakefield's last four trips to the mound, and the team is 8-2 in the knuckleballer's last 10 starts. Righthander Vazquez tossed 6 2-3 scoreless innings in a victory over the Cubs in his last start, but Atlanta fell in each of his previous five outings.

Meanwhile, the Yankees will turn to A.J. Burnett (5-4, 4.24 ERA) on Saturday in their road game against the Mets and Tim Redding (1-2, 6.08 ERA). Righthander Burnett is coming off a suspension to make this start; in his last trip to the mound on June 20 vs. the Marlins Burnett was tagged with a loss despite giving up just two runs (one earned) over 6 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Redding beat the Cardinals in his last start, surrendering four earned runs in seven innings pitched.

As well, it'll be Ryan Dempster (4-5, 3.83 ERA) vs. Mark Buehrle (7-2, 3.17 ERA) as the Cubs play on the road against the White Sox on Saturday. The Cubs have lost each of Dempster's last four starts, although the righthander gave up just six earned runs over 25 2-3 innings in that stretch. Righthander Buehrle grabbed a victory in his last trip to the mound against the Reds, tossing seven scoreless innings and giving up just five hits. The ChiSox are 6-4 in Buehrle's last 10 starts.

Also on MLB's Saturday interleague schedule: Philadelphia at Toronto, Minnesota at St. Louis, the Angels at Arizona, Kansas City at Pittsburgh, Detroit at Houston, Washington at Baltimore, Cincinnati at Cleveland, Florida at Tampa Bay, San Diego at Texas, Colorado at Oakland, and Seattle at the Dodgers. The NL-only matchup for Saturday has San Francisco on the road over in Milwaukee.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA rolls out four more games on Saturday, with New York at Indiana, Atlanta at Connecticut, Washington at Chicago, and Phoenix at Minnesota. The Mercury are coming off a 93-87 road win over Washington on Thursday night, with Cappie Pondexter scoring a game-high 24 points in the victory. The Lynx managed to pick up a 69-57 home win over New York in their last game on Tuesday night; Candice Wiggins tossed in 25 points in that victory.

      SCOREBOARD

      Saturday, June 27

Minnesota at St. Louis (1:10 EDT). Twins right-hander Kevin Slowey (10-2) goes for his major league-leading 11th victory against the Cardinals, who have lost three straight.

      STARS

      Friday

-Andre Ethier, Dodgers, had his first three-homer game and drove in a career-high six runs to lead Los Angeles to an 8-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

-Josh Beckett, Red Sox, pitched seven scoreless innings in Boston's 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves. He also threw a five-hit shutout at Fenway Park last week against the Braves.

-Brett Gardner, Yankees, had a career-high five hits, including his third homer of the season and a triple, in a 9-1 rout of the Mets.

-B.J. Upton, Rays, had two hits, stole a base and drove in three runs with a double that snapped an eighth-inning tie and helped Tampa Bay beat the Florida Marlins 7-3.

-Geovany Soto, Cubs, hit a tiebreaking three-run homer to help Chicago beat the White Sox 5-4, a day after it was revealed he tested positive for marijuana at the World Baseball Classic.

-Ricky Romero, Blue Jays, held Philadelphia hitless for six innings as Toronto topped the Phillies 6-1. Romero allowed two hits in seven shutout innings.

-Glen Perkins, Twins, worked seven innings of four-hit ball in 92-degree heat as Minnesota beat the slumping St. Louis Cardinals 3-1.

      STATS

Tampa Bay is close to becoming the first team in major league history to have 100 steals and 100 homers before the All-Star break. The Rays swiped three bases Friday night in a 7-3 win over Florida, giving them a baseball-best 114. They've also hit 98 homers. ... Miguel Cabrera and Placido Polanco hit home runs in Detroit's 5-4 loss at Houston, giving the Tigers homers in 10 consecutive games, their longest stretch in almost two years. ... Oakland is the only team in the majors without a complete game pitched. The A's are also gone 143 consecutive games without a starting pitcher lasting eight innings, the longest streak in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. ... Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki had his sixth straight multihit game, giving him a major league-leading 34 this season.

      MILESTONE

Alex Rodriguez hit his 564th home run in the New York Yankees' 9-1 win over the Mets on Friday night to pass Reggie Jackson for 11th place on the career list.

      BRAVE DOMINANCE

Boston's Josh Beckett (9-3) has faced Atlanta twice in the past seven days and still hasn't given up a run after beating the Braves 4-1 on Friday night. He threw a five-hit, no-walk shutout at Fenway Park last weekend. This time, he allowed six hits, struck out six and didn't walk anyone before turning it over to the bullpen. In his past seven starts against Atlanta, Beckett is 6-0 with a 0.38 ERA.

      STREAK STOPPER

Miguel Tejada had a double and drove in two runs to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-4 victory over Detroit on Friday night, ending the Tigers' seven-game winning streak.

      LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Tony Gwynn Jr. hit the first home run of his career in the San Diego Padres' 12-2 loss at Texas on Friday night. The homer was the first in his 161 career games, 31 with the Padres, and came 12 years to the day after his father, Tony Gwynn, hit an inside-the-park grand slam for San Diego.

      FUN & GAMES

Milton Bradley attacked the cooler in the dugout after he flied out in the top of the sixth inning of the Chicago Cubs' 5-4 win over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday night, leading to an angry exchange in the tunnel with manager Lou Piniella, who told him to get dressed and go home.

      OOPS

The New York Yankees took advantage of three errors by Mets infielders that led to a four-run second inning in a 9-1 win Friday. Third baseman David Wright, shortstop Alex Cora and first baseman Nick Evans contributed to the Mets' first three-error inning in five years.

      COMING UP ACES

Yovani Gallardo (8-4) provided a big lift to a team that had lost five of its previous six games and is missing two starters by outdueling San Francisco's Matt Cain in a 5-1 victory Friday night. After giving up a first-inning home run to Pablo Sandoval, Gallardo settled down to retire 16 Giants in a row between the second and seventh innings. He gave up one runs and four hits in 7 2-3 innings.

      HUNTING THE A.L.

Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer to cap an eight-run second inning and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Diamondbacks 12-3 on Friday night and improved to a major league-best 12-4 in interleague play with only two games against Arizona remaining.

      GOING LONG

Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season, carrying a one-hitter into the seventh as the Indians beat Cincinnati 9-2 on Friday night. He allowed two runs and six hits in his longest outing since Sept. 9, when he went eight in a win at Baltimore.

      FIRSTS

Pittsburgh's Virgil Vasquez made his first major league start in 22 months and went six innings for his first big league win as the Pirates beat Kansas City 5-3 on Friday night. The 27-year-old right-hander, recalled by the Pirates after Thursday's game to make his first start since Aug. 31, 2007, allowed two runs and four hits while striking out seven.

      SHOWING UP

A crowd of 45,024 - the biggest at Camden Yards since opening day - watched the Baltimore Orioles rout the Washington Nationals 11-1 on Friday night in an interleague matchup between last-place clubs. ... The New York Mets drew their second straight sellout, a Citi Field record crowd of 41,278, in their 9-1 loss to the Yankees. After selling out the opener, the Mets fell short for 34 consecutive games before a discount-assisted full house Thursday afternoon against St. Louis.

      BUSTED

Kansas City Royals pitcher Sidney Ponson tested positive for a stimulant during the World Baseball Classic and was banned from international competition for two years. Major League Baseball will not suspend Ponson. Under the drug rules, he will be treated as a first-time offender and is subject to a medical review and fine.

      SIDELINED

Toronto catcher Rod Barajas injured his right hamstring in the second inning of the Blue Jays' 6-1 win over Philadelphia on Friday night, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the game. ... Atlanta outfielder Nate McLouth was day to day after leaving the Braves' 4-1 loss to Boston in the eighth inning. He strained his left hamstring running to first base.

      SPEAKING

"This has been a common occurrence and I've looked the other way a lot and I'm tired. I'm not into discipline, I'm really not. I'm going to put his name in the lineup tomorrow and that's it.'' - Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella, who sent outfielder Milton Bradley home Friday. The two got into an argument after Bradley attacked the cooler in the dugout after he flied out in the top of the sixth inning of a 5-4 win over the White Sox.

      SEASONS

      June 27

1917 - Catcher Hank Gowdy of the Braves became the first major league player to enter military service in World War I.

1939 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Braves played a 23-inning, 2-2 tie. Whit Wyatt pitched the first 16 innings for the Dodgers. Both clubs played a 26-inning tie in 1920 at the same Braves Field.

1958 - Billy Pierce of the Chicago White Sox retired 26 straight Washington batters before pinch-hitter Ed Fitzgerald hit a double just inside the right-field line for the only hit. Pierce then struck out Albie Pearson on three pitches and beat the Senators 3-0.

1973 - David Clyde, a $125,000, 18-year-old bonus baby with the Rangers, pitched five innings, struck out eight and allowed one hit in his first major league start. Texas beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 before 35,698 fans - the Rangers' first home sellout at Arlington Stadium.

1980 - The Los Angeles Dodgers' Jerry Reuss pitched a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants in an 8-0 victory at Candlestick Park. The only player to reach base was Jack Clark in the first inning on a throwing error by shortstop Bill Russell.

1986 - San Francisco rookie Robby Thompson set a major league record when he was caught stealing four times in the Giants' 7-6, 12-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Catcher Bo Diaz threw out Thompson in the fourth, sixth, ninth and 11th innings.

1993 - Anthony Young of the New York Mets set a major league record by losing his 24th straight decision, 5-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals.

1999 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 27th homer and robbed Juan Gonzalez of a three-run shot with a spectacular over-the-fence catch as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 in the final game at the Kingdome.

2003 - Boston set a major league record by scoring 10 runs before the first out. The 50-minute, 91-pitch first inning came during a 25-8 victory over Florida. The Red Sox also tied an AL record with 14 first-inning runs. Johnny Damon matched a major league mark with three hits in an inning.

2007 - Ryan Howard hit his 100th career homer in his 325th game, becoming the fastest player to reach that total. Howard's three-run shot off Cincinnati's Aaron Harang gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. The 505-foot drive was the longest in the four-year history of Citizens Bank Park.

2008 - Carlos Delgado of the New York Mets homered twice, including a grand slam, and set a franchise record with nine RBIs in a 15-6 rout of the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the opener of the teams' two-ballpark doubleheader. The Yankees beat the Mets 9-0 at Shea Stadium in the night game.

      Today's birthday: Jim Johnson 26.

        This Day in Baseball

On June 27 in Baseball History...

1959 - With the players voting, Henry Aaron gets a unanimous vote for the All-Star Game, making him the first player so selected.

1973 - David Clyde, 18 and fresh out of Houston's Westchester high school, makes his eagerly awaited debut with Texas before 35,698, the largest Rangers' crowd of the year. Clyde, the number one pick in the draft, walks the first two Twins he faces, then gets Bob Darwin, George Mitterwald, and Joe Lis on swinging third strikes. Clyde goes five innings and gives up only one hit — a two-run home run — walks seven and strikes out eight. He is the winner, 4-3.

1977 - Willie McCovey smashes two home runs in the sixth inning to pace a 14-9 Giants victory over the Reds. McCovey becomes the first player to twice hit two home runs in one inning, having also done it on April 12, 1973. He also becomes the all-time N.L. leader with 17 career grand slams.

1980 - Jerry Reuss pitches an 8-0 no-hitter for the Dodgers against the Giants at Candlestick Park. Reuss, who strikes out only two but doesn't walk a batter, is deprived of a perfect game when shortstop Bill Russell throws wildly to first base on Jack Clark's easy grounder in the first inning.

1986 - Give him an 'A' for effort. San Francisco second baseman Robby Thompson is caught stealing four times in the Giants' 7-6, 12-inning win over the Reds, establishing a new major league record. Thompson was thrown out by Bo Diaz in the fourth, sixth, ninth and 11th innings.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Toronto Blue Jays (-101, 9.5)

Let’s just say the Phillies were lucky not to run into the Blue Jays in last year’s World Series.

The Phillies may have had their way with Tampa Bay, but Toronto has owned the defending champions, winning five straight against them heading into this weekend’s series, including claiming three straight last week. During that sweep in the City of Brotherly Love, the Jays scored 23 runs on 31 hits and drew 19 walks, battering the Phillies pitching staff.

Aaron Hill continues to lead the team’s offense. He is hitting .306 BA with 52 RBI and already has equaled a career-high with 17 homers.

He's the last person the Phillies want to see. They have lost eight of their past 10, including yielding 17 runs in their final two games of last week’s series against Tampa Bay.

Bird is not the word for the Phillies.

            Pick: Blue Jays

Florida Marlilns at Tampa Bay Rays

Don’t look for these Fish to fry in Florida this weekend.

The Marlins entered the weekend winners of seven of their past 10 games and can thank the return of their offense. The team has scored at least five runs in each of its past four games – all wins. In those games, the team has combined to score 28 runs on a staggering 51 hits, getting clutch at-bats from virtually every player in the lineup.

Hanley Ramirez has been the catalyst for the team’s offensive surge, as he is hitting .335 BA with 11 home runs, 47 RBI and 46 runs scored.

The Rays did take two of three from the Marlins earlier this year, outscoring them by a combined 29-10, but Florida is playing much better this time around.

Look for the Rays to sleep with the fishes.

            Pick: Marlins

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

              Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners)

King Felix has given up fewer earned runs this month (four) than most people have fingers on their hand.

Hernandez (7-3, 2.74 ERA) has rebounded from a dreadful May to be nearly flawless this month. In four starts, he has lasted 30 1-3 innings, going at least seven strong each time out. During that span, he has allowed just 21 hits and struck out 26 batters against 11 walks. Good luck Dodgers.

"You could always tell he was going to be good," Mariners catcher Jamie Burke told the Associated Press. "But he is starting to mature and you can see it in his pitching. He doesn't seem like he's 23."

              Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles)

Guthrie (5-7, 5.09 ERA) has struggled to look the part of an ace for much of the season. But since lasting just 2-3 of an inning on June 5 in Oakland, in which he gave up six earned runs on seven hits, he's giving his best performances of the season.

The right-hander allowed just one earned run over seven innings in his last start, a 2-1 win at Philadelphia. That effort came on the heels of two straight quality starts following the disaster in Oakland.

Guthrie’s key to a win against the Nationals is getting outs early. He has allowed 28 runs in the first two innings this season, but just 27 from the third inning on.

              Slumping

Jorge De La Rosa (Colorado Rockies)

Don’t be fooled by the hard-throwing left-hander’s 3-1 record this month.

De La Rosa (3-7, 5.85 ERA) hasn’t made it out of the sixth inning in each of his past two starts, combining to go just eight innings while yielding 11 earned runs on 18 hits. He did strike out 10 batters over that span, but also walked four and allowed three home runs.

It’s hard to expect a hurler owned in a meager 3.3 percent of ESPN’s fantasy leagues to stifle Oakland’s offense.

              Homer Bailey (Cincinnati Reds)

It will be a victory for Bailey against the Indians if he doesn’t live up to his first name.

In his lone start of the season on May 23, Bailey went just 4 1-3 innings, yielding six earned runs and walking six. Since that disaster, he was optioned to Triple-A Louisville, where he has compiled a 4-0 record with an 0.47 ERA in his past five starts before being recalled this week.

But playing well in Triple-A and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee and little else, especially against a lineup as potent as Cleveland’s. And the team that shelled him and sent him to the minors last month? Yup, that was the Indians.

Detroit Tigers at Houston Astros [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers (-$1.15, O/U 9.5 under -$1.20): Houston halted the Tigers’ seven game-winning streak on Friday night coming back from a 4-0 deficit against Justin Verlander to win, 5-4. But the Tigers still homered for the 10th consecutive game, their longest stretch in nearly two years. Detroit is 52-22 (70 percent) in its last 74 interleague contests. The Tigers are 14-7 the past 21 times they’ve faced a team with a losing record during interleague competition. The Tigers also have won on 10 of the last 12 Saturdays. Alfredo Figaro makes his second big league start. Figaro defeated the Brewers in his big-league debut last Saturday, 9-5. Figaro gave up two runs on eights hits. He walked two, while striking out seven. That was the most strikeouts by a Tiger pitcher in his first start since 1999. The 24-year-old right-hander showed four pitches, including a fastball that topped out at 97 mph.

The Under has cashed 23 of the past 32 times in Detroit’s road games versus a team with a losing home record.

Key Injuries - Carlos Guillen (shoulder) is on the DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Astros: Rookie Felipe Paulino is slated to come off the DL today and get the starting nod. Paulino was forced to leave his last start on June 7 against the Pirates in the second inning after having only thrown 34 pitches. He was put on the DL with a strained groin. He had allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings, while striking out four Pirates. Paulino came into the Pittsburgh game having gone 0-4 in his previous five starts with a 5.33 ERA. Houston has lost six of Paulino’s last eight starts. This will be Paulino’s second interleague start. He gave up four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings against Texas not factoring in a decision in a 6-5 home loss on May 22. The Astros have lost nine of their last 13 home games when meeting a team with a winning record.

The Astros are 9-18 in their last 26 interleague games versus a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Geoff Blum (hamstring) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

New York Yankees at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-$1.65, O/U 9 over -$1.15): The Yankees are just 12-11 this month, but rate a solid edge with A.J. Burnett and the Mets missing three key everyday players. Burnett is on a strong roll having surrendered just seven earned runs in his last five starts. He held Florida to one run in his previous start last Saturday. Burnett struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings. He has struck out at least seven batters in six of his past seven starts. In his second-to-last start, Burnett shut out the Mets, 15-0. He allowed four hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts. Alex Rodriguez has four hits, two homers and six RBIs in his last two games after being in a 1-for-25 slump. The Yankees, though, are 9-21 in their last 30 interleague road games against a team with a winning record. They also are 3-7 in their last 10 away contests versus a right-handed starter.

The Under has cashed in 14 of the Yankees’ last 20 interleague games.

Key Injuries - Derek Jeter (illness) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

Mets: The Mets have struggled in June going 9-14. Injuries to Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado have taken a toll. The Mets also have been without starting pitchers John Maine and Oliver Perez. Their absence has giving an opening to Tim Redding. The Mets are 2-5 in Redding’s last seven starts. Redding did win his last start, though. He beat the Cardinals, 6-4, on Monday. He allowed four runs in seven innings, giving up five hits while striking out four and walking one. Redding did allow two homers in that game. Even with that decent start, Redding’s ERA is 6.08. He has never faced the Yankees. Redding is 2-3 with an 8.00 ERA in 16 interleague appearances, including 13 starts. The Mets have won 11 of their last 16 home games when facing a right-handed starter. The Mets are 2-5 in their last seven games versus the Yankees.

The Over is 23-10-4 in the Mets’ last 36 interleague games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Jose Reyes (calf), Carlos Delgado (hip) and Carlos Beltran (knee) are all on the DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phoenix Mercury at Minnesota Lynx (+2.5, 178.5)

The Lynx really miss Seimone Augustus.

Tearing her ACL just 24 hours after dropping 30 points in an 86-83 win at Sacramento, the Lynx watched their star and the team’s leading scorer go down for the remainder of the season. And the squad has greatly missed Augustus’ 21 points per game, as it has dropped two of its past three after winning four of five to start the season.

If Minnesota (5-3) is to regroup and continue its push for the playoffs, it must get past Phoenix (6-3), which has used its up-tempo attack to rocket to first place in the Western Conference standings.

For Minnesota to have a chance, it must get a standout performance from Candice Wiggins (13.3 ppg) to counter Phoenix star Diana Taurasi (22.6 ppg).

                            Pick: Mercury -2.5

Washington Mystics at Chicago Sky (-5.5, 151)

The sky is the limit for Chicago as long as they have Jia Perkins.

Perkins again saved the Sky when she buried the game-winning jumper in a 99-98 win over the Atlanta Dream. She finished the game with 20 points, further cementing the fact her season averages of 17.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and four assists per game are no fluke.

"She is one of our All-Stars, even though she hasn't been voted in yet," Chicago coach Steven Key told the Associated Press. "Jia put us on her back."

If the Sky are to remain perfect at home, they must take advantage of the mediocre Washington defense which yields 78 points per game.

                            Pick: Sky -5.5

                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
