    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, June 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockies continue their series in Los Angeles, the Diamondbacks host the Rangers, and the Phillies take on the Rays.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Jason Marquis (9-4, 3.71 ERA) will be gunning for his 10th win of the season on Wednesday night when his Rockies play on the road against the Angels and Joe Saunders (7-4, 3.80 ERA). Colorado has a 6-1 record in Marquis' last seven trips to the mound, and the righthander held the Pirates to three earned runs over 8 2-3 innings of work in his last start. Lefthander Saunders took a no-decision against the Dodgers in his last outing, giving up four earned runs in 6 1-3 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks' Dan Haren (6-4, 2.23 ERA) will get the ball at home on Wednesday against the Rangers and Vicente Padilla (5-3, 4.79 ERA). Righthander Haren has surrendered two or fewer earned runs in each of his past five outings, giving up just 22 hits in 38 innings of work. Righthander Padilla was stuck with a no-decision in his last outing against the Astros, allowing three earned runs over his six innings. The Rangers are 7-3 in Padilla's last 10 outings.

Back east, the Phillies will send Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.28 ERA) to the mound in Tampa Bay on Wednesday night against the Rays and Matt Garza (4-5, 3.83 ERA). Righthander Blanton has surrendered only seven earned runs over his last three starts, but Philadelphia went 0-3 in those three contests. Righthander Garza hasn't picked up a victory since beating the Indians back on May 16, with his team going 2-4 in his last six starts. Garza lost to the Rockies in his last start.

Elsewhere on the diamond on Wednesday it'll be St. Louis at the Mets, the Cubs at Detroit, Cleveland at Pittsburgh, Boston at Washington, Cincinnati at Toronto, Baltimore at Florida, the Yankees at Atlanta, Minnesota at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at the White Sox, San Francisco at Oakland, and San Diego at Seattle. As well, the Royals will continue their three-game set in Houston, with KC's Luke Hochevar (2-3, 6.61 ERA) set to take on Astros ace Roy Oswalt (3-4, 4.48 ERA).

      Six-pack for Wednesday

Bottom six college football teams last year in turnover margin........

-- Washington State, -25-- 2-11 in Wulff's first season, beating a I-AA team and 0-12 Washington in the Apple Cup game.

-- Wyoming, -24-- Fired coach Glenn, who was 30-41 in six years but could never quite get over the hump in Laramie.

-- Washington, -22-- Fired Ty Willingham after rash of injuries; there is some talent here for new coach Sarkisian, including QB Locker, one of the best in the country. I predict he'll have a very big 2009.

-- North Texas, -22-- Former Longhorn QB Dodge is 3-21 in his two years in Denton, after dominating high school ball in Dallas area.

-- Army, -14-- Changed coaches, bringing in Ellerson, who had a solid program out at Cal Poly. West Point is tough place to win.

-- Idaho, -14-- Sarah Palin's alma mater is 18-75 since 2001, 3-21 last two seasons. They usually don't fire head coaches because they quit first. Vandals have had a hard time holding onto their coaches.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Cleaning out a cluttered mind........

      13) Manny Ramirez is suspended for 50 games, but is playing in rehab games in the minor leagues; in my humble opinion, he shouldn't be able to do this until the 50-game suspension is over, but that’s just me. Only good part of this is Albuquerque franchise cleans up for two nights with very big crowds- they drew 15,321 Tuesday, a huge crowd for them.

      12) If you care about such things, Ramirez went 0-2 against southpaw Manny Parra, who was in the big leagues until recently.

      11) Last year's Mets were first team in 40 years to have four guys start 158+ games; three of those four guys are on the DL right now.

      10) Texas beat LSU 5-1, evening the College World Series 1-1, with the championship game Wednesday night in Omaha. Can't say that college pitchers coddle their pitchers-- freshman threw complete game for the Longhorns, after he had pitched briefly in relief Monday night. Wow. If a minor league manager ever did that, his butt would get fired.

      9) We've started looking at college football stuff for this fall-- Nebraska Cornhuskers are -43 in turnovers the last five years, going 9-4 LY, even though they were -11 in turnovers. They could make a quantum leap to top of Big 12 North just by turning around that turnover stat.

      8) Minnesota Gophers are supposed to be better this fall; their turnover ratios the last three years: +18/-15/+12, with records of 6-7/1-11/7-6. If they can have a positive TO ratio this fall, they might go to decent bowl.

      7) Totally underrated fact is that Navy is 50-25 in football the last six years, showing that if you have a dominant running game, you can beat people. Middies don't have offensive balance, but they still win.

      6) Timberwolves traded Foye and Miller away Tuesday, now have the #'s 5,6,16,28 picks in Thursday night's NBA draft. Safe to say they're thinking this is a pretty deep draft. Wizards are happy to have Foye and Miller so their perimeter shooting will be better.

      5) Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio looks like Pete Maravich, but can he play? Lot of debate on that subject. Its also going to be expensive to get him out of his Spanish contract, all for a guy shrouded in mystery.

      4) Which reminds me that I once kept a guard named Milos Vujanic on my fantasy league team for two years; kept reading how good he was-- he was once involved in a Knicks-Suns trade, but he never came here to play. Only guy in the history of the world who didn't want to play ball in the best league in the world. I still wonder how good he was/wasn't.

      3) Clemson's Trevor Booker led ACC last winter in blocks/rebounds, the first player to do that since Tim Duncan. You'd think he'd be preseason Player of Year in ACC, but since he isn't on Duke/North Carolina, it is doubtful he will be, even though he's a damn good player.

      2) SI.com reported Tuesday that Bo Ryan is teaching some zone defense to his World University Games team-- in his entire career, Ryan's teams haven't played one possession of zone defense, but he's been told that in international ball, its good to mix things up. Ryan is a brilliant coach who won four national titles at the Division III level, before becoming coach of the Wisconsin Badgers, where he wins fairly regularly.

      1) Sad to report the passing of the great Ed McMahon at age 86; he was King of the Sidekicks, a likeable man who made being second banana into an art form. What a great laugh he had. I'm sure he had an ego, we all do, but he put his away for an hour every night and got rich doing it.

        SCOREBOARD

        Wednesday, June 24

Colorado at Los Angeles (10:05 p.m. EDT). Jason Marquis will look for his 10th win of the season as the sizzling Rockies close out a three-game set with the Angels. He will face Joe Saunders, who already has seven wins this season.

        STARS

        Tuesday

-Chase Utley, Phillies, homered and drove in four runs to help Philadelphia rout Tampa Bay 10-1 in the first regular-season meeting between the teams since last year's World Series.

-Tommy Hanson, Braves, won his third straight start as Atlanta beat the New York Yankees 4-0.

-Jason Bay, Red Sox, had four hits, including his 19th homer and a two-run single that broke open the game in the eighth inning of Boston's 11-3 rout of Washington.

-Zack Greinke, Royals, pitched eight sharp innings for his first win in almost a month as Kansas City beat Houston 2-1.

-Joel Pineiro, Cardinals, pitched a career-best two-hitter to end a five-start losing streak for St. Louis in a 3-0 win over the New York Mets.

-Ryan Raburn, Tigers, hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Detroit to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs.

-Tim Lincecum, Giants, pitched a seven-hitter, striking out 12 as San Francisco beat Oakland 4-1.

-Justin Upton, Diamondbacks, homered, doubled and drove in three runs as Arizona topped Texas 8-2.

        SIDELINED

Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez had back surgery Tuesday, a season-ending procedure he hopes will salvage his career. The six-time Gold Glover, on the 60-day disabled list with a herniated disk and strained right forearm, had the operation performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles. It was the second back surgery for Chavez - the same microdiscectomy surgery in a different spot - and his fifth operation overall since Sept. 5, 2007. He has also had three shoulder operations.

        MANNY RETURNS

Manny Ramirez began a minor league stint to ease his way back into playing shape after a 50-game drug suspension. He went hitless in two at-bats for the Albuquerque Isotopes. He wore No. 99 for the Dodgers' top farm club and played four innings. Fans lined the walkway from the clubhouse as Ramirez entered the field. They gathered near the dugout, clustering for autographs, and they seemed ready to forgive Ramirez for violating baseball's drug rules.

        SLUGGER'S RETURN

Philadelphia's Ryan Howard returned to the starting lineup as the designated hitter after being hospitalized over the weekend with acute sinusitis. He missed Sunday's 2-1 loss to Baltimore, ending his consecutive games streak at 343. It was the longest active streak in the majors. "Am I 100 percent? No,'' Howard said before Tuesday's game. "But I'm a lot better. 75-80 percent. Right now it's mostly congestion.''

        PRESIDENTIAL PITCH

President Barack Obama plans to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the All-Star game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on July 14. The White House says Major League Baseball's focus on community service matches with Obama's service initiative this summer, known as United We Serve. Obama, a White Sox fan, will be the fourth president to throw out the first pitch at an All-Star game, following John F. Kennedy (1962 in Washington), Richard Nixon (1970 in Washington) and Gerald Ford (1978 in San Diego).

        WELCOME BACK

The A's hosted a reunion to honor their 1989 World Series champion team that swept the Giants in an earthquake-interrupted Series. Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, Series MVP Dave Stewart, Dave Henderson and current A's pitching coach Curt Young were among the 12 in attendance. Giants hitting coach Carney Lansford was a captain on that team. Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire were no-shows. A greeting from then-A's skipper Tony La Russa showed on the main scoreboard.

        DENIED

Major League Baseball president Bob DuPuy has denied the formal protest filed by the New York Yankees after a disputed loss to the Florida Marlins. New York manager Joe Girardi protested Sunday's 6-5 defeat at Florida because of a Marlins substitution mix-up.

        HOLDING ON

The Indians, who blew a pair of five-run leads and a seven-run lead during their losing streak, led 5-0 going into the ninth before nearly giving up another big lead. The Pirates scored four times and loaded the bases before Adam LaRoche, who homered to start the comeback, flew out to right field on a 3-2 pitch by Kerry Wood to end the game.

        HISTORIC VISIT

The Red Sox visited the Smithsonian's American history museum before the game and donated two World Series items: a third base bag used in 2004 and a jersey worn by Jon Lester in 2007.

        MILESTONES

Ken Griffey Jr's home run in the sixth inning was the 5,000th home run in Seattle Mariners franchise history. Griffey is the franchise leader in home runs with 406. Edgar Martinez (309) and Jay Buhner (307) follow.

        SPEAKING

"It's hard to win when you get only four hits. We're just not swinging the bats.'' - New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi after a 4-0 loss to Atlanta.

        SEASONS

        June 24

1936 - Rookie Joe DiMaggio hit two homers in the fifth inning and added two doubles in the New York Yankees' 18-4 victory over the St. Louis Browns.

1950 - Wes Westrum of the New York Giants hit three home runs and a triple in a 12-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

1955 - Harmon Killebrew hit his first major league homer, off Billy Hoeft at Griffith Stadium, but the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Senators 18-7.

1962 - Jack Reed, a substitute outfielder, hit a homer off Phil Regan in the 22nd inning to give the New York Yankees a 9-7 win over the Detroit Tigers in a game that lasted 7 hours, 22 minutes. It was the only homer Reed hit in the majors.

1968 - Jim Northrup tied a major league record by hitting two grand slams in one game as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 14-3.

1983 - Don Sutton of the Milwaukee Brewers became the eighth pitcher in major league history to strike out 3,000 batters. Sutton's 3,000th victim was Cleveland's Alan Bannister in a 3-2 win over the Indians.

1984 - Oakland's Joe Morgan hit his 265th home run as a second baseman, breaking Roger Hornsby's career home run record for the position. Morgan's homer off Frank Tanana was the 267th of his career and led the A's to a 4-2 win over Texas.

1994 - Jeff Bagwell hit three homers, two in one inning to tie a major league record, as the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 16-4.

1997 - Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners struck out 19 batters - one short of Roger Clemens' major league record for a nine-inning game. He became the first AL left-hander to fan 19, but the Oakland Athletics won 4-1.

1998 - Sammy Sosa tied the major league record for homers in a month, hitting his 18th of June in the first inning of the Cubs' 7-6 loss to Detroit. Sosa, with 31 homers overall, matched the mark set by Detroit's Rudy York in August 1937, and broke Willie Mays' NL record set in August 1965.

2002 - Both starters in the first game of the Anaheim-Texas doubleheader - Joaquin Benoit and Aaron Sele - threw 96 pitches, 53 strikes and 43 balls. Benoit and the Rangers won 8-5.

2003 - Brad Wilkerson hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, in Montreal's 6-4 win over Pittsburgh. It was the first cycle in the majors this season and was performed in sequence - single, double, triple and homer.

2007 - Dustin McGowan pitched a one-hitter to lead Toronto to a 5-0 victory over Colorado. Jeff Baker singled leading off the ninth inning to spoil McGowan's no-hit bid. He retired the next three batters to finish off his first career shutout. He struck out seven and walked one over 109 pitches.

        Today's birthday: Phil Hughes 23.

          This Day in Baseball

On June 24 in Baseball History...

1947 - The Dodgers win 4-2 over the Pirates as Jackie Robinson swipes home for the first of 19 times in his career.

1955 - Washington rookie infielder Harmon Killebrew hits his first home run in an 18-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

1970 - The Reds play their final game at Cincinnati's Crosley Field, beating the Giants 5-4.

1972 - Culminating a long battle to reach pro baseball, Bernice Gera umpires the first game of a doubleheader between Auburn and Geneva (New York-Pennsylvania League). Several disputes take place and she ejects the Auburn manager. Gera resigns before the second game, leaving in tears.

1974 - Steve Busby retires the first nine White Sox to set an A.L. record with 33 consecutive batsmen retired. The Royals lose, however, 3-1.

1979 - Rickey Henderson makes his major-league debut for Oakland in a 5-1 loss to Texas in the first game of a doubleheader. Henderson has a single and double in four at-bats and steals the first base of his big-league career.

1983 - Milwaukee's Don Sutton strikes out Alan Bannister in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win over Cleveland to become the eighth pitcher in major-league history with 3,000 career strikeouts. County Stadium is packed with 46,037 fans for the game, mostly to welcome back popular outfielder Gorman Thomas, who was traded to Cleveland earlier in the month.

1989 - Cardinals outfielder Vince Coleman steals his 39th and 40th consecutive bases in a 5-2 loss to the Pirates to break the major-league record set by Davey Lopes in 1975. Coleman has not been caught stealing since September 15, 1988.

1992 - Commissioner Fay Vincent permanently bans Steve Howe from baseball after he pleads no contest to misdemeanor charge of attempting to buy cocaine. The ban is subsequently overturned and Vincent resigns September 7 after a vote of no confidence from owners. Howe will pitch for four more years.

1994 - Jeff Bagwell of the Astros becomes the 28th player to hit two home runs in one inning when he connects twice in the sixth against the Dodgers. Bagwell adds another homer in the eighth.

1997 - Randy Johnson ties Steve Carlton's major-league record for lefthanders with 19 strikeouts against the Oakland A's. He breaks Ron Guidry's A.L. mark for lefties, but like Carlton, Johnson takes the loss in his 19-K game. Mark McGwire's 538-foot home run powers Oakland to a 4-1 victory.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Arizona Diamondbacks (-165, 8)

The Texas Rangers are in a serious hitting slump.

The Rangers are 11th in the major leagues in runs, third in slugging and second in homers but have been struggling to break out for more than three weeks.

Since scoring 14 runs vs. Oakland on May 30, the Rangers haven’t scored more than six runs in their last 19 games. Meanwhile, they have been held to two runs or less six times and are averaging a measly 3.37 runs in that span.

In Texas’ first 49 games, it scored at least six runs 22 times.

Rangers have played under the total in 14 of their last 15 games, and adjustments by oddsmakers haven’t slowed the streak. The stretch began with seven straight games with the total at double digits. For the last three contests, the number has been 8.

A breakout will be a challenge Wednesday, when the Rangers face Arizona righthander Dan Haren, who has pitched at least seven innings and given up no more than two runs in his last five starts.

                Pick: Under

Kansas City Royals at Houston Astros (-165, 8.5)

The Kansas City Royals aren’t just losing games. Their pitching is getting pounded.

Kansas City has lost five in a row and has been outscored by at least five runs in each game. During the slide, the Royals have been outscored, 53-21.

And here’s something else: The Royals have held the lead just twice in their slump, giving it away in the ensuing inning each time.

The starters have pitched just 24 2-3 innings, overworking a bullpen that is last in the majors in saves and near the bottom with a 4.76 ERA. The relievers have an awful 7.97 ERA during the slump.

Kansas City also is an American League-worst 10-19 on the road as it faces Houston and ace Roy Oswalt.

                Pick: Astros

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday is chalk full of quality arms. We searched high and low for jobbers tossing today, but even old reliables like vincent Padilla and Jason Marquis have been performing half decent lately.

We still found one hurler to avoid today, though:

                    Slumping

                    Carl Pavano, Cleveland Indians

Carl Pavano has been giving up hits early and often recently.

After being hit hard in his past few starts, Pavano looks to bounce back Wednesday night when the Pirates and Indians continue their three-game set at PNC Park.

Pavano (6-5, 5.73 ERA) had a rough April after signing a one-year deal with the Indians (30-42) in the offseason, going 0-3 with a 9.50 ERA.

The veteran right-hander then went 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA over his next eight starts, but has since reverted back to his early-season struggles. He gave up nine runs over 4 2-3 innings in a loss to Kansas City on June 10, then allowed six runs and nine hits over five innings without getting a decision on June 15 in a wild 14-12 loss to Milwaukee.

"I was inconsistent," Pavano told the Indians' official Web site. "They put up runs for me, and my job is to put up zeros, but I didn't do it."

Right shoulder soreness pushed back Pavano's turn in the rotation to Wednesday, and he'll be looking to help the Indians string together consecutive wins for the first time since June 11-12.

                    Streaking

                    Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox

Lester had been 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his previous three starts, striking out 34 in 22 innings while limiting opponents to a .099 average, but he wasn't as sharp Thursday against Florida. The left-hander gave up two runs and eight hits over five innings - throwing 110 pitches - in a rain-shortened 2-1 loss that was called in the sixth.

"I think it was a difficult night," Francona said. "Things were rushed. He was even a few minutes late getting ready, just because it was difficult for him. I didn't think he commanded very well. ... (But) he still found a way to give us a chance to win. I think that says a lot."

Lester's lone start against the Nationals (20-48) came June 21, 2006, when he gave up a run and three hits over six innings - striking out 10 - in a 9-3 win.

                    Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox

Chicago gives the ball to Gavin Floyd (4-5, 4.65 ERA), who is 2-1 with a 1.61 ERA in his last six starts. The right-hander was denied victories in his last two outings as the bullpen failed to hold the lead.

Bobby Jenks gave up a game-tying homer in the ninth to Detroit on June 11 after Floyd yielded one run in eight innings. In Thursday's 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs, Floyd allowed one run in seven innings before the White Sox bullpen gave up five in the final two.

Floyd is 1-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two interleague starts this season, but he is 0-3 with a 10.50 ERA lifetime against the Dodgers.

                    Nick Blackburn, Minnesota Twins

Nick Blackburn continues to make his case for becoming the new ace of the Minnesota Twins' rotation.

Coming off his first complete game, the right-hander looks for a fifth consecutive winning decision while trying to help the Twins record a sixth straight victory over the struggling Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Blackburn (6-2, 3.09 ERA) allowed one run and six hits in a 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday for Minnesota's first complete game since Kevin Slowey did it July 28.

Though Slowey has won 10 games for the Twins (36-36) this season, his ERA is almost a run higher than that of Blackburn, who's 4-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his last eight starts.

"(Blackburn's) basically been the stabilizer," pitching coach Rick Anderson told the Twins' official Web site. "It's always nice with a sinkerball guy, because they've got a chance to get you deep in the game."

Blackburn's also fared well in interleague action, going 3-0 with a 3.25 ERA in four starts. His only rough outing came against the Brewers last season when he gave up six runs and nine hits - including four homers - in 4 2-3 innings of a 7-6 win over Milwaukee.
