    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, June 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cubs will send their ace to the hill against the Tigers, the Giants will battle the rival A's, and Wimbledon continues.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Carlos Zambrano (4-2, 3.44 ERA) will get the ball for the Cubs on Tuesday night as they open a series against Detroit and Edwin Jackson (6-4, 2.39 ERA). Righthander Zambrano has been let down by his offense lately, allowing more than three earned runs in just one of his past 10 starts but going just 3-2 with five no-decisions over that span. Righthander Jackson has also been holding down scores lately, allowing three or fewer earned runs in each of his last eight outings.

Out west, the Giants will send Tim Lincecum (6-2, 2.72 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday night to take on the Athletics and Vin Mazzaro (2-1, 1.75 ERA). Righthander Lincecum took a loss against the Angels last time out, giving up four runs (three earned) over eight innings of work. Lincecum blanked the A's in a victory on June 12. Righthander Mazzaro has allowed just five runs over 25 2-3 innings of work on the season, but he fell to Lincecum and the Giants on June 12.

And the Braves will send righthander Tommy Hanson (2-0, 4.08 ERA) to the hill at home on Tuesday night to take on the visiting Yankees and Chien-Ming Wang (0-5, 12.30 ERA). Hanson impressed with six shutout innings against the Reds last time out, and the Braves are 3-0 in his three outings so far this season. In contrast, the Yankees have picked up the win in just two of the nine games in which Wang has pitched so far this year; he lost to the Nationals in his last start.

Also on the MLB slate for Tuesday: Cleveland at Pittsburgh, Boston at Washington, Cincinnati at Toronto, Philadelphia at Tampa Bay, Baltimore at Florida, Kansas City at Houston, Minnesota at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at the White Sox, Texas at Arizona, Colorado at the Angels, and San Diego at Seattle. As well, the non-interleague contest for Tuesday has St. Louis at the Mets, with Joel Pineiro (5-8, 3.76 ERA) all set to take on Livan Hernandez (5-1, 4.18 ERA).

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Wimbledon continues on Tuesday, with men's tournament favorite Roger Federer having advanced to face Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round. Federer knocked off Lu Yen-hsun 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 in his opening match on Monday. The men's side did see an upset on Monday, though, as No. 17 James Blake was knocked out by Andreas Seppi 7-5, 6-4, 7-6. On the women's side, Maria Sharapova managed to get past Viktoriya Kutuzova 7-6, 6-4 in the opening round on Monday, and she'll get Gisella Dulko of Argentina in her second-round match.

Finally, the WNBA gets back on the floor on Tuesday, with Chicago at Atlanta, Phoenix at San Antonio, and New York at Minnesota. The Lynx have started the season 4-3 straight-up (and 4-3 against-the-spread) but they were thumped 90-62 by Seattle last time out and will have to make due the rest of the way without their star forward; Seimone Augustus tore her left ACL and needs knee surgery.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Odd baseball facts, thanks to espn.com.......

-- Nate McLouth is only active big leaguer to hit leadoff home run for two different teams in the same season (ninth in MLB history).

-- Adam/Andy Laroche are 11th set of brothers to homer in the same game.

-- Phillies didn't lose a game last year, once they led in ninth inning; they've already lost six of those games this season.

-- Phils have already lost 22 home games- the '77 Phils lost 21 home games the whole season. Philly is weird, starting year 23-9 on road.

-- Kerry Wood blew one save in 51 chances as a Cub at Wrigley Field; he blew saves in his first two chances there as a visiting player.

-- Dan Haren has a 0.82 WHIP, but only six wins in 14 starts; there's a guy who will win a Cy Young the year someone scores runs for him.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on another cloudy day.....

      13) When Donald Fehr became boss of the players' union in 1986, the average salary for a major leaguer was $289,000; last year, average salary was $2.9M, so the players profited from his leadership, even if fans or the game itself didn't. Fehr is going to retire next year, at age 61.

      12) We have worlds colliding later this week, with NBA Draft and NHL Draft on consecutive nights (Thurs/Fri). Talk about cultural diversity.

      11) The NHL has the best draft- they move it around the league, and all the teams' honchos are present, sitting at huge tables on the arena floor. Kids and their parents sit in the arena seats and wait to be called. Of all the leagues, they definitely do their draft the best.

      10) Tennessee hoop coach Bruce Pearl, one of the all-time great talkers. will be working on ESPN's coverage of the NBA Draft.

      9) Potential bad news for Cavalier fans-- Lebron James is moving his basketball camp from Akron to San Diego. Camp costs $650 for kids who stay overnight, $510 for day campers, but the move out of Akron surely has to send chills down spine of hoop fans on Lake Erie.

      8) Hard to believe Miami Hurricanes are 9-15 in ACC football the last three seasons- they're supposed to be better this season.

      7) Auburn hired Gene Chizik as head coach this winter- the guy had a
5-19 record in two years at Iowa State; in fairness, people in Ames say he was rebuilding the right way, but still, for an SEC team to hire a guy with a 5-19 career record, when Turner Gill was available, well, lets just say it raises some eyebrows.

      6) Green Bay Packers went 6-10 last year but fans don't seem outraged; only 192 people didn't renew their season tickets.

      5) If I was a Viking fan or player, especially Sage Rosenfels, I wouldn't be happy about the Favre-to-Minnesota soap opera. How would you like to be a Viking veteran, having to go to all the offseason stuff that is mandatory, then have the new star QB waltz in whenever he feels like it, which is ezxactly what is going to happen. It doesn't breed winning.

      4) Dodgers are now 25-16 without Manny Ramirez, with nine games to go before he comes back. Interesting thing will be how they handle four quality outfielders-- someone has to sit, or get traded. Very tough to sit Juan Pierre, who has been a stellar leadoff hitter.

      3) CBSSports.com reports that when brothers are the starting pitchers in a big league game, the older brother is now 12-9 against the younger one, after Jeff Weaver beat brother Jered in Anaheim Saturday night.

      2) Looks like Cardinals may have lucked into finding a third baseman, as Khalil Greene has been crushing the ball since coming back from anxiety problems that sent him to the DL. They moved him to 3B, and now he looks like the player the Padres thought he was four years ago.

      1) PGA Tour moves to Hartford this week; if you're going, recommend sitting by the driveable par-4 15th hole. Great fun, and you're close to the 17th green and 18th tee. Also a good place to stand is by the driving range and the putting green, so you can how hard these guys practice.

        SCOREBOARD

        Tuesday, June 23

Philadelphia at Tampa Bay (7:08 p.m. EDT). The first meeting of the season between the teams from last year's World Series, which the Phillies won in five games. Rays designated hitter Pat Burrell will face his former team after playing for the Phillies his first nine seasons.

        STARS

        Monday

-Brad Hawpe, Rockies, celebrated his 30th birthday with a three-run homer and Colorado beat the Los Angeles Angles 11-1 for their 17th victory in 18 games and club-record ninth straight on the road.

-Tim Redding, Mets, pitched into the eighth inning for his first win with New York as he beat St. Louis 6-4.

-Omar Santos, Mets, went 4 for 4 as New York topped St. Louis 6-4.

-Bobby Crosby, Athletics, drove in three runs, and Oakland ended a five-game losing streak in the Bay Bridge Series with a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

        SO LONG

Donald Fehr announced his retirement Monday as head of the baseball players' association after a quarter-century marked by a strike that canceled the World Series, record salaries and finally 14 years of labor peace. Fehr, who turns 61 next month, said he will leave the powerful union no later than the end of March. Fehr recommended that he be succeeded by union general counsel Michael Weiner, the No. 3 official and his longtime heir apparent. The move is subject to approval by the union's executive board and possible ratification by all players.

        SIDELINED

Carlos Beltran was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, an enormous blow to a struggling New York Mets team already decimated by key injuries. The All-Star center fielder has an aching bone bruise on his right knee, the same injury that sidelined him for a couple of games in late May. An MRI exam Monday showed the bruise has gotten worse and Beltran said the doctor told him it just about doubled in size from last month.

        PROTESTING

The New York Yankees filed an official protest with the commissioner's office after a disputed loss to the Florida Marlins. New York manager Joe Girardi protested Sunday's 6-5 defeat at Florida because of a Marlins substitution mix-up in the eighth inning. Teams have 24 hours after a game to submit a protest, and Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney confirmed Monday that the Yankees met the deadline. Courtney said Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer, will rule on the protest. A decision is expected this week.

        SITTING OUT

Chicago manager Lou Piniella held outfielders Alfonso Soriano and Milton Bradley out of the starting lineup in Monday night's 2-0 loss to Atlanta so both could rest. Bradley struck out as a pinch hitter. With a makeup game with the Atlanta Braves, the Cubs are playing 22 straight days, a streak that began after a June 16 rainout against the White Sox. Soriano, who leads the team with 14 homers, is hitting .153 in 118 at-bats over his last 27 games, dropping the left fielder's average to .224. Piniella also gave his leadoff hitter a day off May 23.

        RED-HOT ROCKIES

Colorado beat the Angels 11-1 for their 17th victory in 18 games. Since having their 11-game winning streak snapped, the Rockies have won six straight. They improved to 19-5 under manager Jim Tracy, who took over when Clint Hurdle was fired.

        SPEAKING

"We have to believe. We have to be optimistic that we can stay competitive. We have to guard against that particular mind-set that might permeate in the clubhouse that, man, there's not much left.'' - New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel after the team put Carlos Beltran on the 15-day disabled list.

        SEASONS

        June 23

1917 - In baseball's greatest relief effort, Ernie Shore of the Boston Red Sox retired all 26 batters he faced to gain a 4-0 victory over Washington. Starter Babe Ruth walked Eddie Foster to open the game and was ejected after arguing with umpire Brick Owens. After Shore relieved Ruth, Foster was cut down stealing.

1950 - Hoot Evers' game-winning home run in the ninth inning gave the Detroit Tigers a 10-9 victory over the New York Yankees as the teams combined for 11 home runs, a major league record. The Yankees hit six and the Tigers five.

1963 - Jimmie Piersall, playing for the Mets in New York, hit his 100th career home run and celebrated by running around the bases backward.

1971 - Rick Wise of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds and hit two homers. Wise became the first pitcher to hit two homers while throwing a no-hitter.

1973 - Pitcher Ken Brett of the Philadelphia Phillies hit a home run in the fourth consecutive game that he pitched in June. He beat Montreal 7-2.

1984 - Chicago's Ryne Sandberg hit two late-inning home runs off St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bruce Sutter to tie the game twice as the Cubs went on to win 12-11 in 11 innings. Sandberg led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to tie the game 9-9 then hit a two-run, two-out homer in the 10th to tie the game 11-11. Willie McGee hit for the cycle and drove in six runs for St. Louis.

2000 - Bret Boone hit three home runs along with six RBIs in San Diego's 10-7, 10-inning victory over Cincinnati.

2006 - Jose Contreras won his 16th straight decision, leading the Chicago White Sox past Houston 7-4. Contreras, 16-0 in his last 21 regular-season starts, last lost to Minnesota on Aug. 15, 2005. He surpassed the club mark for consecutive wins held by LaMarr Hoyt and Wilson Alvarez.

2008 - Felix Hernandez hit the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years, then departed with a sprained ankle before he could qualify for a win in Seattle's 5-2 victory over the New York Mets. The shot to right-center off Johan Santana was the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an AL hurler since Cleveland's Steve Dunning went deep against Oakland's Diego Segui on May 11, 1971.

        Today's birthday: Mark Hendrickson 35.

          This Day in Baseball

On June 23 in Baseball History...

1917 - Boston pitcher Babe Ruth starts against Washington. He walks leadoff man Eddie Foster, griping to plate umpire Brick Owens after each pitch. On ball four, Ruth plants a right to the umpire's jaw. He is ejected, and Ernie Shore relieves. Foster is caught stealing, and Shore retires all 26 men he faces in a 4-0 win, getting credit in the books for a perfect game.

1932 - Lou Gehrig plays his 1,103rd successive game in a Yankees uniform, equaling Joe Sewell's record with one team (Cleveland).

1961 - Ernie Banks voluntarily takes the bench as a sore knee brings his 717 consecutive-games-played streak to an end.

1962 - Larry Doby, retired from the Cleveland Indians, signs on with the Chunichi Dragons. He becomes, with Don Newcombe, the first former major league player to toil for a Japanese team. Doby's season batting average will be a mediocre .225.

1963 - Jimmy Piersall of the New York Mets hits the 100th home run of his major league career and celebrates by running around the bases backwards. Dallas Green of the Phillies, who gave up the home run, is not amused. Neither is Commissioner Ford Frick, who is in the stands.

1971 - In a spectacular performance, Phillies pitcher Rick Wise no-hits the Reds 4-0 and hits two home runs in the game. Wise gets Pete Rose for the last out.

1973 - Phillies pitcher Ken Brett beats the Expos 7-2 and hits a home run for a major-league record for a pitcher fourth consecutive game. He hit home runs on June 9, 13, and 18: he will total ten for his career.

1981 - Dave Koza scores Marty Barrett with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 33rd inning, giving Pawtucket a 3-2 win over Rochester and ending the longest game in professional baseball history. The game had been suspended April 19 after 32 innings and eight hours, seven minutes of play, but the continuation took only eighteen minutes to complete. Bob Ojeda pitches one inning to earn the win.

1988 - George Steinbrenner fires Billy Martin for the fifth time, replacing him with Lou Piniella. In 1985, Piniella was fired and replaced by Martin. In 1985, Martin was fired and replaced by Piniella. New York's 40-28 record is the fourth best in the big leagues, but the Yankees had just completed a 2-7 road trip.

1994 - Replays show that A's pitcher Bobby Witt beat Kansas City's Greg Gagne to first base in the sixth inning, but umpire Gary Cedarstrom sees it differently. The infield hit is the only blemish on what otherwise would have been a perfect game.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Toronto Blue Jays (-145, 9)

The Toronto Blue Jays managed to end their batting slump over the weekend. They've never had much trouble at the plate against the Cincinnati Reds.

After salvaging the finale of a series against the major leagues' worst team, the Blue Jays look to continue their hitting success against the Reds in the opener of a three-game interleague set Tuesday night.

Toronto (38-33) is coming off a 4-2 road trip, but dropped the first two games of its series with Washington before winning the finale 9-4 on Sunday. The Blue Jays had scored a combined four runs in their two losses against the lowly Nationals.

Toronto could use another big game from its lineup with untested rookie Brad Mills (0-0, 9.82 ERA) set to take the mound. He lasted just 3 2-3 innings in his major league debut, giving up four runs, six hits and walking four in Toronto's 8-7 win over Philadelphia on Thursday.

Despite posting a 1-8 record and 4.48 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A Las Vegas, the left-hander was called up Wednesday to replace injured Casey Janssen in the rotation and became the fourth Blue Jays starter this season to make his major league debut.

Toronto's taxed bullpen may not get much relief. Blue Jays relievers have had to pitch at least four innings in six of the team's last nine games, posting a 4.30 ERA during that stretch.

There's a possibility Toronto may have to contend with Reds slugger Joey Votto, who has been on the disabled list since May 30 with stress-related issues. The first baseman, who has been feeling good at the plate in his rehab assignment at Single-A Dayton, grew up in Toronto and is eager to help slumping Cincinnati.

                Pick: Cincinnati

Kansas City Royals at Houston Astros (+120, 8.5)

Zack Greinke tries again to recapture his early season form and help the Royals avoid a sixth straight defeat Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series with the Houston Astros.

Kansas City (29-39) had sole possession of first place in the AL Central with an 18-11 record May 7, thanks in large part to Greinke's dominance at the start of the season.

The Royals, however, have plummeted in the standings with an 11-28 record since, and Greinke (8-3, 1.96 ERA) has been part of the problem over the last three weeks. After opening the season 8-1 with a 0.84 ERA in his first 10 starts, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA in his last four - all Kansas City losses.

"You go through streaks like that throughout the year," Greinke said after being reached for six runs - four earned - in 6 2-3 innings of a 12-5 loss to Arizona on Wednesday. "I'm better than what I've done the past couple of starts.

"I felt like I started pitching better today. I just didn't finish it. For some reason, I'm having trouble doing that lately when usually I can finish off innings real good. That's what's really been the problem the last four starts is getting two outs and then not getting the last guy out."

The Astros (32-35) have been doing very well in one of those areas, posting a 3.73 ERA while winning 13 of 20. Prior to this stretch, they were near the bottom of the league with a 4.66 ERA.

Russ Ortiz (3-2, 3.60) will try to continue that success on the mound Tuesday. The right-hander has a 2.38 ERA in two starts since returning to the rotation from the bullpen.

                Pick: Under

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Struggling

                  Chien-Ming Wang (0-5, 12.65), New York Yankees

It’s been a season-long battle for Wang. The former 19-game winner is struggling with his location in just about every trip to the bump. Wang, whose best pitch is his sinker ball, has been leaving far too many balls up in the zone.

His most recent start was probably his best this season, but the big righty still picked up his fifth loss of the season. He got 10 outs on grounders before getting yanked after the fifth inning with his team down 3-1 to the Nats.

“We wanted to see some good things out of him and we did,” Yankee manager Joe Girardi said following the contest. “The ground-ball outs is a real good sign.”

Wang is fighting to keep his spot in the rotation and if he reverts to his form from past starts he could be bullpen-bound.

Francisco Liriano (2-8, 5.91), Minnesota Twins

This lefty hasn’t been the same pitcher since undergoing Tommy John surgery in the fall of 2006. He still has swing-and-miss stuff, but he walks too many batters and gives up too many long balls.

"It's really frustrating, because every time I miss one pitch it just changes the whole game," Liriano said after the Pirates took him out of the park twice last Wednesday. "I don't know what to do anymore."

He hasn’t picked up a win since May 15 and the Twins have exchanged congratulatory high fives in only two of his last seven outings.

                  Streaking

Max Scherzer (4-4, 3.58), Arizona Diamondbacks

There haven’t been too many bright spots to the 2009 campaign for the D-backs, but the development of Scherzer takes a bit of the sting away for Arizona fans.

The righty has surrendered just two runs in his last three appearances, with ‘Zona winning two of those games.

“I think we’re seeing the maturation of a good major league pitcher,” Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch said following Scherzer’s victory against the Giants on June 11. “When he’s under control and in the strike zone, he’s a difficult guy to face.”

Brad Penny (6-2, 4.94), Boston Red Sox

This former Dodger ace was thought to be a long relief or emergency starter after the Sox signed him in the offseason. But he won a job in the rotation and has been one of the most consistent hurlers in the big leagues thus far.

He already has seven quality starts to his credit and the velocity on his fastball appears to jump each time he takes the mound.

Penny has given up just one earned run in his last two starts and under bettors have cashed in each of his last four outings.

Baltimore Orioles at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]

Orioles (-$1.10, O/U 9): The Orioles are playing well, winning seven of their last eight games following a 2-11 slump. Baltimore has won five in a row. The Orioles have won nine of their last 12 interleague contests, batting .295 and averaging a home run per game during interleague. Baltimore, though, has dropped 36 of its past 51 road games. Rookie Koji Uehara is looking for his first win since April 13. The 34-year-old right-hander won his first two starts of the season, but is winless in his past nine outings. Baltimore is 2-7 in these games. Uehara, who played in Japan for 10 years, has a respectable 3.73 ERA during his past nine starts. The Orioles have averaged just 2.3 runs for Uehara during his last nine appearances. The Orioles’ bullpen could get a boost with former closer Chris Ray re-joining the team following a successful minor league stint with Triple-A Norfolk.

Baltimore is 10-4 as a road favorite.
The Under is 9-2-2 in the Orioles’ last 13 games as chalk.

                          Key Injuries - None.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Marlins: Florida lefty Andrew Miller is looking to rebound from his first loss in four starts. Miller is 2-0 with a 3.49 in five starts at home this season. The Marlins, though, are 4-10 in Miller’s past 14 starts. Miller is still striving for consistency and needs to cut down on his walks. He hasn’t gotten past the sixth inning since May 22. He allowed four runs and seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 5 1/3 innings during a 6-1 road loss to Boston on Wednesday. The Marlins are 13-5 all-time versus the Orioles. The Marlins are 8-1 at home against the Orioles, although they last hosted them way back in 2001. Florida is 12-27 in its last 39 games when facing a right-handed starter. The Marlins’ bullpen could be less effective with setup man Kiko Calero going on the DL with a shoulder injury.

The Over is 9-2 in Florida’s last 11 interleague home games versus a right-handed starter.
The Over has cashed 11 of the last 14 times in the Marlins’ interleague home contests.

Key Injuries - Relief pitcher Kiko Calero (shoulder) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago White Sox [8:10 PM ET]

Dodgers: The Dodgers are 25-16 since Manny Ramirez was suspended, the best record in baseball during this time span. Even though the Dodgers have lost 38 of their last 51 interleague games, they haven’t lost a series in a month. This includes capturing road series against the Rangers and Angels. Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda hasn’t won since coming off the DL on June 1 following a strained oblique that cost him nearly two months. In his last two starts, Kuroda has been touched for nine earned runs in 11 2/3 innings. He is 0-3 with a 4.43 ERA in his last four outings. His last victory came on opening day. Kuroda did reach 95 mph on his fastball, so he should be at full strength. Kuroda has never faced the White Sox. He is 0-3 with a 6.11 ERA in three starts versus American League opponents.

The Dodgers are 15-5 in their last 20 against teams with a losing record.
The Under is 39-17-3 in the Dodgers’ past 59 interleague road matchups.

Key Injuries - Manny Ramirez is suspended.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

White Sox (-$1.15, O/U 8.5): The White Sox are 3-8 in their last 11 home games. They are batting just .219 at U.S. Cellular Field, while averaging just 3.4 runs in 34 home games. Chicago has won eight of its last nine interleague matchups at home. Lefty John Danks is off one of his best games of the season. He held the Cubs to one run on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in seven-plus innings en route to a 4-1 victory Wednesday. Danks is 5-5 and has a 4.48 ERA. However, he’s been lights out lately when facing National League clubs. Danks has allowed two runs in 25 innings, for a 0.72 ERA during his last four starts versus National League foes. He faced the Dodgers once, giving up no runs on four hits in six innings last June 26. The under is 7-1 in Danks’ last eight starts as a favorite.

The Under is 10-1-1 in the White Sox’s last 12 games against NL West Division foes.
The Under has cashed 15 of the past 22 times in Danks’ starts versus a team with a winning mark.

Key Injuries - Carlos Quentin (foot) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Phoenix Mercury at San Antonio Silver Stars (-3, 167.5)

Becky Hammon couldn't lead San Antonio to a win over the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month. The Silver Stars, though, like their chances to win Tuesday night's rematch better with their star guard expected back in the lineup.

Hammon should on the court for the Silver Stars after missing two games as San Antonio faces the Mercury at the AT&T Center.

Hammon was absent for her WNBA team's last two contests while playing for Russia in the European women's championships. Without her, the Silver Stars (1-3) lost 77-61 at New York on Friday and fell 71-58 at Connecticut on Sunday.

Hammon averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 assists in her first two games and should provide an offensive boost for San Antonio, the lowest-scoring team in the WNBA at 65.3 points a game.

While Hammon is expected back, guard-forward Vickie Johnson and reserve guard Shanna Crossley are uncertain for Tuesday. Johnson missed Sunday's game following a death in the family while Crossley sat out with a sprained left knee.

Without those three players, the Silver Stars were outrebounded 38-31 by the Sun and held to 10 points in the fourth quarter, going scoreless for the first 3:21 of the period.

Hughes' team looks to avoid a third straight loss when it faces the Mercury, who dropped into a tie with Seattle for the Western Conference lead with a 93-84 loss to the Storm on Sunday. That snapped Phoenix's three-game winning streak.

Playing their third game in five days, the Mercury were outscored 34-20 in the first quarter. They closed to within three late in the game before suffering their first home loss in nine contests.

While Phoenix took the first meeting with San Antonio this year, the Silver Stars swept the three-game season series in 2008. The Mercury, though, have take three of the last four matchups at the AT&T Center.

                            Pick: Under

New York Liberty at Minnesota Lynx (+2.5, 155)

It took a few games before the New York Liberty got into a groove. The Minnesota Lynx appear headed for their own adjustment period with Seimone Augustus out for the season.

After a poor effort in their first contest without Augustus, the Lynx look to slow down the hot-shooting Liberty on Tuesday night.New York (2-3) has won two straight - both by double digits - after losing its first three games and has an excellent chance to continue its momentum against a Minnesota team that looks lost without Augustus.

The Lynx (4-3) learned Friday they would be without the All-Star forward for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL in her left knee, and they went on to shoot just 29.3 percent (17 of 58) in a 90-62 loss to Seattle that evening.

Minnesota averaged 87.0 points in six games with Augustus, who was named the Western Conference's player of the week Monday.

Augustus, who was averaging 21.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals, was injured Wednesday during a loss at Phoenix.

Veteran forward Shameka Christon continues to lead the Liberty offensively, averaging 16.5 points and shooting 45.0 percent from beyond the arc. Christon had 17 points versus the Dream, going 3 for 5 from 3-point range.

Janel McCarville has stepped up over the last two games to give the Liberty a strong presence in the post, averaging 16.5 points in that stretch. She was held to four points in New York's 91-69 loss to Minnesota last June 24, the most recent meeting between the teams.

The Liberty won 77-76 in their only other matchup with the Lynx last season.

                            Pick: Liberty

                              Len’s Top Five

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 23, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

Unknown Lucas Glover wins the rain delayed U.S. Open at Bethpage by 2 shots. Phil Mickelson faded, as usual, to finish 2nd for the 5th time, tied with David "what a comeback" Duval, and Ricky Barnes.
By the way, Tiger Woods finished 4 shots back. If he had parred the 15th hole in every round, he and Glover would be staging an 18 hole playoff today.
At Wimbledon, defending champion Venus Williams was an easy first round winner this morning.
Well that didn't take long, 17th seed James Blake was dumped in the first round at Wimbledon in straight sets. No American man has won Wimbledon since Pete Sampras in 2000.

                              2. Fehr and Loathing

I always used to side with the baseball players union. It goes back to the days when Marvin Miller headed it up. Players were screwed by the owners when it came to salary and Miller tipped the balance. Donald Fehr replaced Miller in 1983 and resigned yesterday after 26 years. Under Fehr the players union fought drug testing tooth and nail. Under the guise of privacy he helped enable the steroid era. That's not a legacy to be proud of.

                              3. The Ladies Draw

A raging debate in jolly old England. Former Wimbledon champ Michael Stich stirred things up when he said the ladies side of the draw isn't about tennis, it's about selling sex. He took dead aim at the "grunters" who make all the noise saying it detracts from their sex appeal. He joked the only way to stop the "grunters" is to shoot them. Needless to say his comments got feminist knickers in a twist. They want women players judged on their "athletic performance." In a perfect world, sure. But that's like saying female movie stars are judged solely on their acting ability. (Now I've stepped in a hornets nest.)

                              4. A-Rod Update

C'mon, admit it. You can't live without it... the latest A-Rod celebrity chatter. The night that Alex Rodriguez was benched in Miami for fatigue, The Palm Beach Post reports he was partying until 2:30am with Kate Hudson. The Miami Herald claims it looked like Kate Hudson was giving him a lapdance at the Fountainbleu. The Yankees say they'll rest A-Rod once a week. Sounds like he could certainly use it.

                              5. Creative Math

The Chinese government reports the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing turned a profit, not counting the construction of the venues or infrastructure.
Yeah, and I shot even par the other day, if you don't count the bogeys and double bogeys.

Today's Birthday: Former Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell. 84.
Bonus Birthday: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. 61.

Today in Sports: Jimmy Pearsall of the Mets hits hits 100th career homer. He runs facing backwards around the bases. 1963.
Bonus Event: Lorena Bobbitt....well, you know the rest. 1993.
