    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, June 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockies meet the Angels and the Giants take on the A's in MLB matchups, and the U.S. Open continues for one more day

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

There are just four games on tap around Major League Baseball on Monday night, including the Rockies starting a three-game series in Anaheim. Colorado will send Aaron Cook (6-3, 4.23 ERA) to the mound in that contest. Righthander Cook has won three straight starts, allowing just five earned runs over 21 innings of work. Los Angeles counters with Matt Palmer (6-0, 4.13 ERA) on Monday. Righthander Palmer has one win and four no-decisions in his past five outings.

The other interleague matchup on Monday has San Francisco at Oakland, with the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez (2-7, 5.43 ERA) taking on the Athletics' Trevor Cahill (4-5, 3.89 ERA). Lefthander Sanchez has lost three straight starts, and he was knocked around for seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2-3 innings against the Angels last time out. Righthander Cahill has given up three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 trips to the mound, beating the Dodgers in a start last Wednesday.

The Cardinals and Mets will start an NL-only series in New York on Monday night, with St. Louis' Todd Wellemeyer (6-6, 5.36 ERA) set to take on New York's Tim Redding (0-2, 6.27 ERA). Righthander Wellemeyer bounced back from a couple of bad outings to beat the Tigers last time out, allowing two runs over 5 1-3 innings. Righthander Redding has two losses and four no-decisions in his six trips to the mound this season, allowing seven runs over his last 12 1-3 innings.

Finally, the Cubs and Braves will play a makeup game in Atlanta to round out the Monday schedule, with Chicago's Ryan Dempster (4-4, 3.92 ERA) facing off against Atlanta's Javier Vazquez (4-6, 3.41 ERA). Righthander Dempster hasn't picked up a win since May 30, but he's surrendered just four earned runs over his last 19 innings of work (three no-decisions). Righthander Vazquez is winless since May 20, taking a loss versus the Reds (eight innings, four runs) last outing.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The U.S. Open will conclude on Monday (weather permitting), with Ricky Barnes looking to claim the major championship. Barnes finished the third round on Sunday with a one-stroke lead on Lucas Glover. David Duval and Ross Fisher were both five strokes back at the end of Round 3. Phil Mickelson shot a 69 in the third round to remain on the edge of contention, while Tiger Woods shot a 68.

      Six-pack for Monday

Your major league leaders, after eleven weeks of play.........

BA-- Suzuki Sea .358; Wright NYM .349; Sandoval SF .338.

RBI-- Pujols StL 68, Fielder Mil 67; Bay Bos 66.

Runs-- Pujols StL 56; Scutaro Tor 53; Braun, Damon, Pena all 52.

      Walks-- Gonzalez 57, Dunn 55, Pujols 52.

Strikeouts-- Verlander 118; Vazquex, Lincecum, both 112.

Pitches Thrown-- Millwood 1,666; Billingsley 1,647; Verlander 1,611

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend...........

      13) TV golf starts at 9am Monday on ESPN, and switches to NBC at 11:30. Hopefully the weather will hold up and they can finish.

      12) David Duval's last top 10 finish in any tournament was in Las Vegas back in 2002, quite a comedown for someone once ranked #1 in world; he was ranked 882nd in the world coming into the US Open. Looks like he's on his way back after the way he's played so far this week.

      11) Colorado Rockies are now 16-1 in their last 17 games, as they head out for an interesting week, at Anaheim/Oakland-- they'll see old friend Matt Holliday when they get to northern California.

      10) Frank Anderson, father of A's pitcher Brett Anderson, is Oklahoma State's baseball coach; he replaced Tom Holliday, Matt's father-- the two sons are teammates, for one year. Little bit unusual.

      9) Albert Pujols hit two more homers in Tony Larussa's 2,500th win as a manager-- Pujols now has eight homers in his last ten games.

      8) Tampa Bay's Jeff Niemann is luckiest guy going; in his last twelve starts, Rays have scored 102 runs (8.38), winning 10 of the 12 games.

      7) Phillies have to be glad to head to Tampa, since they just went 0-6 at home against Toronto/Baltimore this week- they play better away from home, but they miss Ibanez badly, and their pitching has been subpar.

      6) Yes, that table above is correct-- Marco Scutaro is second in major leagues in runs scored. Guy gets the most out of his ability.

      5) Indians have now lost their last six games, giving up 51 runs.

      4) Rangers are hanging onto first place in AL West by a thread after bad weekend in San Francisco, where they scored seven runs in three games.

      3) CC Sabathia left with tightness in his bicep in second inning in a 6-5 Florida win; Sabathia is a terrific innings-eater, so if he is out for a long time, it will have a domino effect on the rest of a fragile pitching staff.

      2) 16 of 30 starting pitchers finished the 7th inning Sunday, with two of them finishing the 8th. Only six relief pitchers got decisions Sunday, as ten of the fifteen games stayed under the total.

      1) If the baseball playoffs started Monday morning, these would be the playoff teams: AL-- Boston-Detroit-Texas-Bronx
      NL-- Philadelphia-St Louis-Los Angeles-San Francisco.

        SCOREBOARD

        Monday, June 22

Chicago Cubs at Atlanta (7:10 p.m. EDT). The Cubs' Ryan Dempster has gone at least six innings in all but one start this season. The Braves' Javier Vazquez is tied for the NL lead with 112 strikeouts.

        STARS

        Sunday

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, hit two homers and drove in six runs, helping the Cardinals rout the Kansas City Royals 12-5 in win No. 2,500 for manager Tony La Russa.

-Nick Green, Red Sox, homered just inside the Pesky Pole in right field on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth to give Boston a 6-5 win over Atlanta.

-Barry Zito, Giants, carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and helped lead San Francisco over Texas 3-2.

-Justin Verlander, Tigers, allowed two runs on five hits in 7 2-3 innings to lead Detroit to a 3-2 win over Milwaukee and improve to 8-1 since April 27.

-Lyle Overbay, Blue Jays, homered and drove in five as Toronto avoided a sweep by Washington with a 9-4 victory.

-Mark Buehrle, White Sox, pitched seven shutout innings as Chicago beat Cincinnati 4-1 and the left-hander improved to 19-6 in interleague play.

-Kevin Correia, Padres, carried a shutout into the seventh inning and combined with three relievers on a two-hitter, leading San Diego over Oakland 4-1.

        POWERFUL PUJOLS

Albert Pujols hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in the St. Louis Cardinals' three-game sweep over their cross-state rivals, the Kansas City Royals. The two-time NL MVP had four hits Sunday and delivered the decisive blow in the Cardinals' eight-run fourth inning, pounding his club record-tying third grand slam of the season. He also had a run-scoring single in the first and added his major league-leading 26th homer in the fifth.

        MANAGING MILESTONE

St. Louis' Tony La Russa joined Connie Mack (3,831) and John McGraw (2,763) as the only managers with 2,500 victories following a 12-5 win over Kansas City on Sunday. La Russa is 2,500-2,177 in 31 years as a big league manager with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland and St. Louis.

        SLUMPING CHAMPS

The World Series champion Phillies have lost a season-worst six straight, getting swept at home in consecutive interleague series by Toronto and Baltimore, including a 2-1 loss Sunday. Philadelphia fell to 13-22 at home, but the Phillies are a major league-best 23-9 on the road.

        ROCKIN' ROBERTS

Baltimore's Brian Roberts had the decisive hit for the second straight game, a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning Sunday that helped the Orioles to a three-game sweep of Philadelphia. Roberts hit an RBI single off Cole Hamels (4-3) that made it 2-1 and sent the Orioles to their fifth straight win. Roberts hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth off Ryan Madson in a 6-5 win Saturday night.

        OOPS

Arizona's Tony Clark dropped a routine throw to first base Sunday, allowing Ronny Cedeno to score the winning run for Seattle with two outs in the ninth inning. Chad Qualls got Franklin Gutierrez to ground slowly toward third where Mark Reynolds charged, fielded cleanly and fired a perfect throw to Clark. The ball hit Clark's mitt in the palm and popped out for an error, giving Seattle a 3-2 win.

        RED-HOT ROCKIES

Colorado completed a sweep of Pittsburgh on Sunday, beating the Pirates for their 16th victory in 17 games. Since having their 11-game winning streak snapped, the Rockies have won five straight. They improved to 18-5 under manager Jim Tracy, who took over when Clint Hurdle was fired.

        OUTTA HERE ... AGAIN

Atlanta manager Bobby Cox was ejected for the 145th time - increasing his major league record - when J.D. Drew gave Boston a short-lived 5-4 lead Sunday with an RBI single in the seventh one pitch after he took a pitch that appeared to be over the plate for a third strike. Cox came out of the dugout, argued and was thrown out by plate umpire Bill Hohn. Pitcher Eric O'Flaherty and third baseman Chipper Jones were also tossed. Boston won 6-5.

        WHO'S IN LEFT?

New York manager Joe Girardi protested the Yankees' 6-5 loss to Florida on Sunday because of a mixup with the Marlins lineup in the eighth inning. Chris Coghlan was removed in a double switch, but took his position in left field anyway. Leo Nunez threw a pitch, then Girardi came out to protest. After about a 5-minute delay, Coghlan was removed, Jeremy Hermida went to left field and the Yankees played the rest of the game under protest.

        STREAKS STOPPED

Philadelphia's Ryan Howard sat out the Phillies' 2-1 loss to Baltimore on Sunday after spending another night in the hospital with flu symptoms, ending his streak of 343 straight games played since May 25, 2007. It was the longest active streak in the majors. ... Minnesota's Justin Morneau had his first day off since June 27, 2007, ending his streak of 319 consecutive games played that was second in the majors to Howard's. San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez played in his 275th consecutive game to take over the lead among active players.

        SIDELINED

Struggling Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a mild shoulder strain and could be sidelined much longer. ... Plate umpire Jerry Crawford left the game between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets in the second inning because of lower back pain. Both teams were pulled off the field during a 14-minute delay while first-base umpire Scott Barry went inside to put on protective equipment. ... CC Sabathia left the New York Yankees' game against Florida in the second inning with tightness in his left biceps. The team said Sabathia is day to day and that no tests are planned. ... St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Khalil Greene limped off the field after being hit by a pitch on the right knee against the Kansas City Royals. Following the Cardinals' 12-5 victory, Greene said he'll be fine.

        SPEAKING

"He does it over and over again and it's impossible to describe how great he is. Albert's amazing.'' - St. Louis manager Tony La Russa on Albert Pujols, who hit two homers and had six RBIs in the Cardinals' 12-5 rout of Kansas City on Sunday. Pujols hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in the Cardinals' three-game sweep of their cross-state rivals.

        SEASONS

        June 22

1925 - The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 24-6 with Kiki Cuyler and Pie Traynor each hitting a grand slam and Max Carey getting two hits in the first and eighth innings.

1930 - Lou Gehrig hit three home runs to lead the New York Yankees to a 20-13 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics in the second game of a doubleheader. Ruth tied major league records for five homers in two games and six homers in three games.

1947 - Cincinnati's Ewell Blackwell almost duplicated Johnny Vander Meer's double no-hit record by following up his June 18 gem over Boston. Brooklyn's Eddie Stanky singled with one out in the ninth to end Blackwell's bid. Blackwell ended up with a 4-0 two-hitter.

1962 - Baltimore Orioles first baseman Boog Powell became the first batter to hit a home run over the center-field hedge at Memorial Stadium. The 469-foot clout came off Don Schwall of the Boston Red Sox.

1994 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 31st home run of the season in Seattle's 12-3 victory at California, breaking Babe Ruth's record for most homers before the end of June. Ruth needed 63 games to reach 30 homers in 1928 and 68 games in 1930. Griffey did it in the Mariners' 70th game.

1997 - The Atlanta Braves, behind a four-homer, nine-run third, beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-5. Chipper Jones, Fred McGriff, Michael Tucker and Jeff Blauser homered in the inning.

2002 - The Detroit Tigers ended Luis Castillo's 35-game hitting streak. Castillo went 0-for-4 and was left on deck when the Florida Marlins finished off a four-run, ninth-inning rally to beat the Tigers 5-4.

2006 - Anthony Reyes pitched a one-hitter in just his fourth major league start, but St. Louis fell to the Chicago White Sox 1-0. Jim Thome homered in the seventh inning for Chicago's only hit.

2008 - Atlanta's Mark Teixeira hit three home runs and finished with four RBIs in an 8-3 win over Seattle. Teixeira hit solo drives batting left-handed in the second and fourth innings, and a two-run shot from the right side in the seventh.

Today's birthdays: Ian Kinsler 27; Jason Motte 27; Brad Hawpe 30; Willie Harris 31; Kenshin Kawakami 34.

          This Day in Baseball

On June 22 in Baseball History...

1926 - The Cardinals pick up 39-year-old Grover Cleveland Alexander on waivers from the Cubs to help in the pennant chase. He'll go 9-7 down the stretch.

1932 - The N.L., at a meeting of club presidents, finally approves players wearing numbers. The A.L. had started in 1929.

1946 - Bill Veeck heads a syndicate that purchases the Cleveland Indians. This launches Veeck on a long career as a lively promoter.

1947 - Ewell Blackwell just misses pitching back-to-back no-hitters when Eddie Stanky of the Brooklyn Dodgers singles with one out in the ninth inning. Blackwell then gets Al Gionfriddo before Jackie Robinson bangs out a single. Blackwell wins 4-0, his ninth straight win to improve to 11-2. Stanky's hit ends Blackwell's hitless-inning skein at 19.

1976 - Randy Jones pitches the Padres to a 4-2 win over the Giants, and ties Christy Mathewson's 63-year-old N.L. record by going 68 innings without a base on balls. He receives a standing ovation from the home crowd after striking out Darrell Evans to end the seventh. His streak ends when he walks catcher Marc Hill leading off the eighth. It is Jones's 13th win of the year.

1982 - Pete Rose doubles off John Stuper in the third inning of a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals for his 3,772nd career hit, moving him past Hank Aaron into second place on baseball's all-time list.

1984 - In a teary home plate ceremony before the Twins-White Sox game at the Metrodome, Calvin Griffith and his sister, Thelma Haynes, sign a letter of intent to sell their 52 percent ownership of the Twins to Minneapolis banker Carl Pohlad for $32 million. Griffith and his sister had been involved with the franchise since 1922, when owner Clark Griffith of the then-Washington Senators adopted them.

1987 - Tom Seaver abandons his comeback attempt with the injury-riddled Mets and retires with a career record of 311-205, an ERA of 2.86, 3,640 strikeouts, and 61 shutouts.

1990 - The last-place Braves fire manager Russ Nixon and replace him with general manager Bobby Cox, who last managed Toronto in 1985.

1994 - Mets reliever John Franco earns his 253rd career save to break Dave Righetti's record for most saves by a lefthander.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets (-111, 9.5)

Albert Pujols decided to remind everyone that he’s the most fearsome batter since Tom Selleck in Mr. Baseball. The All-Star first baseman clubbed out two homers in St. Louis’ 12-5 win on Sunday, capping off a three-game sweep of Kansas City that included three Pujols bombs.

The player nicknamed the Machine by ESPN has eight jacks in his last 10 games and the Cards are now 17-4 when the big fella goes yard.

Pujols isn’t the only Red Bird showing off muscle at the plate. Infielder Khalil Greene, who had missed 19 games with a social anxiety disorder, knocked out a big fly for a third straight game. He left in the fourth inning after his right knee was hit by a pitch.

St. Louis began the month of June on a sour note, going 2-7 in its first nine contests. The club has since turned things around and sit atop the National League Central.

Expect Pujols and Company to rattle Mets starter Tim Redding early and often on Monday.

                Pick: St. Louis

Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves (-139, 8)

Just when it seemed like the Chicago Cubs forgot how to cross home plate, the defending NL Central champs snapped out of their offensive slump to score 26 runs in four games.

The Cubbies, who accumulated just 10 runs in their previous six games, have won four games in a row. The added offensive production can be attributed to Milton Bradley and Derrek Lee.

Bradley, who has already had some rocky moments in his first year with the Cubs, is getting on base and giving his teammates more chances to knock in runs.

Lee, meanwhile, isn’t just hitting, he’s also hitting more out of the park. He’s riding an 18-game hitting streak and has two home runs in his last four contests.

                Pick: Over

MLB Notes: “ - - to the Disabled List”
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Struggling Matsuzaka placed on disabled list

BOSTON (AP) -Struggling Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Boston made the move Sunday, citing a minor right shoulder strain. It came one day after the right-hander had an MRI and two days after he was shelled for six runs in four innings, raising his ERA to 8.23 and lowering his record to 1-5. Opponents are batting .378 against him.

                  Matsuzaka was 18-3 last year.

He won the MVP award in the World Baseball Classic with Japan for the second time in March. After he returned to the Red Sox, he went on the disabled list from April 15 to May 22 with a mild right shoulder strain.

The Red Sox recalled catcher Dusty Brown from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Rockies: Colorado is the hottest team in baseball. The Rockies have won 16 of their last 17 games. The Rockies own the best record in June and are 7-2 in interleague competition. They also have won their past eight away contests, which is the longest road winning streak in the majors this season. It also ties their franchise best for consecutive road victories. Colorado starter Aaron Cook is coming on after a slow start, having won his past three starts. Cook yielded three runs and eight hits in seven innings during his last start, a 5-3 home victory over Tampa Bay. In his last three starts, Cook has allowed five earned runs and 19 hits in 21 innings. His strikeout-to-walk ratio during this span is 17-to-three. Cook has walked more than one batter only once during his past seven starts. The over is 17-7-2 in Cook’s last 26 starts.

The Angels are 7-1 in their last eight interleague games versus a right-handed starter. The Angels also have won seven of the past nine meetings versus the Rockies. Len’s Top Five

Happy Monday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 22, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                            1. Quick Hits

The 4th round of the U.S. Open resumed at 9am this morning at Bethpage. At the start of play, Phil Mickelson was 5 shots off the lead. Tiger Woods was 7 back.
Wimbledon got underway today, but the tournament took a big hit when defending champ Rafael Nadal dropped out with achy knees.
Manny who? The L.A. Dodgers have rolled to the best record in baseball. They are 25-16 since Manny Ramirez's drug suspension.
Perennial powerhouses LSU and Texas begin a best of three series tonight to crown the NCAA baseball champion.

                            2. Void at the Top

What the sports world lacks is true leadership. The definition? A problem arises, and smart decisions are made that benefit all, even the lowly fan. The USGA screwed up last week and told waterlogged Bethpage fans "tough luck," you saw some golf, go away. Fan complaints fell on deaf ears. But surprise surprise, when the N.Y. Attorney General got involved refunds and rainchecks for today were offered. Just once I'd like to see sports honchos not wait 24 hours to see which way the wind's blowin'.

                            3. A Cold Wet One

Final proof that beer and golf don't mix. According to Newsday all the rain and consumed beer at the U.S. Open on Saturday turned golf fans into.... well, ordinary sports fans at the ballpark. Late in the day, no golfer was spared. One fan yelled to Tiger Woods, "Suck it up, you've got your own video game!" That's the best they could do? He's got his own video game? No mention of his gorgeous wife, his incredible golf talent, or his gazillions? How disappointing. Who would have thought that drunk golf fans can't touch their hockey buddies when it comes to creativity?

                            4. A-SPN

Regular readers of the Top 5 know that Alex Rodriguez is probably mentioned here more than any other athlete, although Plaxico Burress was giving him a run for his money for awhile. A-Rod is the so-called "best player in baseball," yet he had to be benched for a couple of games this weekend because he's fatigued. How easy would it be to say Kate Hudson is tiring him out? But I'm not gonna do it. We take the high road here.

                            5. Lemme in Coach

So they were having this little game of dodgeball at an elementary school in New Rochelle New York. A 10-year old kid complained to his gym teacher that he wasn't in the game, and you know how these things go. One thing led to another and the teacher took down the kid and put him in a "choke-hold." The kid is OK. The teacher got arrested. From what I hear, "dodgeball" in prison is tons o' fun.

Today's Birthday: Knicks 1999 draft pick bust from France, Frederic Weis. 32.
Bonus Birthday: Actress Meryl Streep. 60.
The great Pistol Pete Maravich would have been 62 today.

Today in Sports: Joe Louis knocks out Max Schmeling in the first round at Yankee Stadium. Over 70,000 on hand. 1938.
Bonus Event: Judy "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Garland passes away. She was just 47. 1969.
