    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, June 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sprint Cup Series hits the road, the U.S. Open continues at Bethpage, and the Angels host the Dodgers under the lights.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Brewers and Tigers will both send their aces to the mound on Sunday afternoon when Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo (7-3, 2.93 ERA) takes on Detroit's Justin Verlander (7-3, 3.39 ERA). Righthander Gallardo is 3-1 with a no-decision over his last five starts, allowing just five earned runs over those 31 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Verlander was tagged with a rare loss in his last trip to the mound, surrendering five earned runs over his four innings against the Cardinals.

The primetime matchup for Sunday has the Dodgers closing out their road series with the Angels, with Clayton Kershaw (3-5, 4.13 ERA) taking on John Lackey (2-2, 6.10 ERA). Lefthander Kershaw held the Athletics scoreless on four hits over 5 2-3 innings of work last time out, but settled for a no-decision in that Angels win. Righthander Lackey bounced back from a rough outing to beat the Giants in his last trip to the mound; Lackey held San Fran to three runs over his seven innings.

Also on MLB's interleague slate for Sunday: the White Sox at Cincinnati, Tampa Bay at the Mets, Baltimore at Philadelphia, Toronto at Washington, Atlanta at Boston, Houston at Minnesota, St. Louis at Kansas City, Cleveland at the Cubs, Oakland at San Diego, Texas at San Francisco, Arizona at Seattle, and the Yankees at Florida. As well, the Pirates close out their series in Colorado, with Paul Maholm (4-3, 4.23 ERA) set to take on Jorge De La Rosa (2-7, 5.81 ERA).

    Roaring around the track . . .

Kyle Busch is pegged as the 4/1 Vegas favorite to pick up a Sprint Cup Series victory on Sunday in the Toyota/SaveMart 350 at the Infineon Raceway road course. Busch is the defending champion at this event. Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon, who have combined for seven Infineon victories over the course of their careers, are listed at 6/1 and 7/1 odds, respectively, for Sunday. Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards round out the race's top contenders at 10/1 odds to get the win.

Meanwhile, the Formula 1 circuit will be at Silverstone on Sunday for the 2009 British Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton won this race last season, but it's been all about Jenson Button on the F1 track this year. Button won each of the last four races in Bahrain, Spain, Monaco, and Turkey, and he'll be looking to make it five in a row on Sunday. Sebastien Vettel will start on the pole at Silverstone, with Rubens Barrichello in the second spot, and Button starting from the sixth position.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The U.S. Open continues on Sunday, with tournament organizers hoping for clear skies. Ricky Barnes completed the second round on Saturday as the leader; Barnes was 8-under after 36 holes to sit one stroke ahead of Lucas Glover. Mike Weir, who shot a 64 in the first round, ended up with an even-par 70 in the second round. Phil Mickelson went 69-70 over the first two rounds of the tournament, while Tiger Woods followed up a first-round 74 with a 69 in Round 2.

Finally, the WNBA offers up five games on Sunday, with New York at Atlanta, Detroit at Indiana, Sacramento at Los Angeles, San Antonio at Connecticut, and Seattle and Phoenix. The Mercury have been the most profitable team in the league for bettors so far this season, pairing up a 5-1 straight-up record with a 5-1 against-the-spread mark. Phoenix is also a perfect 5-0 ATS at home this year. The Silver Stars have been the worst option so far for bettors; they're at 0-3 ATS.

      Six-pack for Sunday

-- In their last ten games, Washington Nationals have a 2.88 ERA; they won their last four games, allowing four runs.

-- Albert Pujols has six home runs in his last nine games.

-- 81,454 fans went to the first two Bronx-Florida games, proof that the people of south Florida at least know where the stadium is.

-- Cubs rallied from behind to win for third day in a row, this time in the 13th, scoring two runs off old friend Kerry Wood to win, 6-5.

-- Phillies lost six of their last seven home games.

-- When he starts at USC, Kevin O'Neill will be on his 16th job in the last 31 years, and maybe his toughest one. National writers agree that his hiring is a shock-- his people skills have never been very good.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a soggy Father's Day

      13) No team has ever started a baseball season 13-20 in its first 33 home games and gone on to make playoffs; the '09 Phillies are in that boat.

      12) Josh Beckett's shutout Saturday was his third in regular season, his first since 2005-- he also has three postseason shutouts.

      11) Alexi Ramirez went 4-5 Saturday, with a homer, double, four RBI at Cincinnati; he only saw nine pitches all night, and still got four hits.

      10) Carl Crawford could add a hit a week to his average if he became an expert bunter; thats 26 hits a year; in 2007, his last full season, adding a hit a week would have raised his batting average from .310 to ,360.

      9) Arizona pitcher Dan Haren is one of the best, but he claims to never have read a book from cover-to-cover; if that is true, how the hell did he get into Pepperdine, which is a pretty good school?

      8) Crummy weather flooded clubhouse and lobby at Miller Park, one of baseball's few domed stadiums; supposedly, everything will be OK for the Brewers' next home series, but weather has been awful this spring.

      7) Why would the Mets have FOX News' Greta van Susteren throw out the first ball (for the second time) Saturday? She's from Wisconsin, so she probably roots for the Brewers-- are they that desperate for money that they use the ceremonial first pitch as an advertising ploy?

      6) I wonder if the Bronx Bombers' head honchos had any idea their new ballpark would be such a bandbox; the outfield walls are shorter-- some of the power alleys are a few feet closer to home plate, but did they have a clue so many HRs would be hit there? There is school of thought that things could change when they take the old stadium down, as far as the wind and all that. Doubt they'll move the fences back next year, though.

      5) North Carolina hoop coach Roy Williams was in Omaha to root for the Tar Heels at the College World Series.

      4) Butler had two guys make the 19/under team that will play overseas this summer, making Bulldogs early favorite to be best mid-major team in college hoop next winter, especially with Patty Mills headed to NBA.

      3) There is new four-team football league starting October 8; they'll play each other twice, for six-game season. Former Buffalo QB JP Losman is going to be Las Vegas' QB, playing for former Giant coach Jim Fassel.

      2) NBC shows less live golf than CBS or ABC, choosing to pick good shots from whomever and show them on replay; they've been dealt one lousy hand this weekend with the rain on Long Island- we'll see how they handle what promises to be a very long Sunday of televised golf.

      1) Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there. You deserve it.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies (-142, 10.5)

It's getting more expensive for bettors to ride Jim Tracy's Colorado Rockies.

Tracy is 16-5 since taking over for Clint Hurdle, and the Rockies are seen as a different team by handicappers than they were three weeks ago.

In Tracy's debut on May 29, ace Jason Marquis took the mound at Coors Field against San Diego's Chris Young, who was coming off two solid starts. Marquis pitched well and got the win in a 3-0 victory as a -118 favorite.

Marquis went 1-1 with a no-decision in his next three starts before Friday, when he took the mound at Coors Field against Pittsburgh's Russ Ohlendorf, who was coming off two solid starts. Marquis pitched well and got the win in a 7-3 victory, this time as a -158 favorite.

Under Tracy, Colorado is a balanced 8-2 at home and 8-3 on the road. The Rockies have run off three straight wins since their 11-game winning streak ended. Those are signs of a good team.

So is a rise in the price to back them.

          Pick: Colorado

Cleveland Indians at Chicago Cubs (-159, NA)

One trend that carried throughout the season is the over in games involving the Cleveland Indians, who hit well and pitch poorly.

Cleveland is third in the majors with 363 runs and last in runs allowed with 369.

In the Indians' last 11 games - all played in Cleveland or Chicago - the over is 7-3-1, with a total average of 11.5 runs.

During that stretch, one game that came up short of the total was a Cliff Lee-Chris Carpenter matchup. Another involved Kansas City Royals ace Zack Greinke.

For the season, the over is 39-28-2 in games involving the Indians. It is not more than five games above the break-even mark for any other team. The over is also 23-10 in Cleveland's road games.

The forecast calls for Sunday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs calls for the wind to be blowing in from left field at Wrigley Field, but only at 6 miles per hour.

          Pick: Over

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

            Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals)

Gil Meche is sometimes forgotten in the Royals rotation after what Zack Greinke has accomplished this season. That diversion could be why the right-hander has quietly built a 2-0 record and an ERA under 1.00 in his past four starts.

Meche hasn’t given up an earned run in his last two outings, most recently pitching a complete-game shutout against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He allowed just four hits and struck out six batters. During this current hot stretch, he has totaled 26 K’s while walking 11 batters.

"The crowd kind of carries you through it." Meche told reporters after Tuesday’s start. "It's kind of funny, I was running out there and the crowd stands up and starts cheering.”

            Ricky Romero (Toronto Blue Jays)

No rotation has been bitten harder by the injury bug than the Toronto Blue Jays. However, if Ricky Romero continues to perform at his current level, the Jays may just weather this storm.

The rookie is coming off an impressive display against the defending World Series champs. He went seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out a career-high nine batters in Toronto’s 8-3 extra-innings win over Philadelphia Tuesday.

While he earned a no-decision in that game, Romero has given up seven earned runs in his last 20 1-3 innings of work for 1-1 record and an ERA just over 3.00. Run support has spoiled many of the left-hander’s gems this season and put a damper on his strikeout-to-walk tally of 20-to-6 in the last three games.

            Slumping

            Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox)

Mark Buehrle has dominated the headlines this past week. However, none of the attention is due to his pitching.

The ChiSox ace has been vocal over two of sports’ biggest issues this week, commenting on Sammy Sosa’s steroid use and Michael Vick’s return to the NFL. Buehrle even got some praise for belting his first-career home run in his most recent start.

What the papers didn’t tell you is that the southpaw gave up four runs – on three home runs – in six innings of work, dropping his record to 0-1 in his past three trips to the mound. The White Sox are 1-2 in those games, watching Buehrle serve up five dingers and post an ERA of 5.75 in that span.

            Wandy Rodriguez (Houston Astros)

In a down year for the Astros, Wandy Rodriguez was a ray of hope for bettors. Behind faltering ace Roy Oswalt, the left-hander started the season by helping Houston win seven of his first nine 2009 starts.

Since recording his fifth win of the year on May 20, Rodriguez hasn’t added to that total. In his last five starts, he is 0-4 with an ERA just below 7.00.

His most recent trip to the mound lasted only four innings. Rodriguez surrendered six hits, including three home runs, for six runs to the Texas Rangers.

Sunday Night Baseball: Dodgers at Angels
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Los Angeles Angels (-126, 8.5)

The City of Angels serves as the backdrop for Sunday night’s MLB on ESPN, where the Angels host the Dodgers in a battle of cross-town rivals.

The Halos send staff ace John Lackey (2-2 6.10 ERA) to the mound against Dodger left hander Clayton Kershaw (3-5 4.13 ERA) in a matchup of two arms that appear to be rounding into form.

              Take two

These inter-city rivals squared off earlier this year when the Angels won two of three games at Chavez Ravine, improving to 12-5 in the previous 17 meetings in this series. Prior to the start of this series, the Halos had won seven of the last eight games as a series host.

The Los Angeles Angels were prohibitive favorites to win the American League West but struggled early on. The starting pitching staff has been the main culprit, as they sent a league-high 11 starters to the hill this season.

To make matters worse, the bullpen suffered a major setback when Scot Shields’ season was cut short with a knee injury.

"I wanted to keep playing, but the pain didn't go away at all,” Shields told reporters.

Shields pitched 425 innings between 2004 and 2008, the most of any reliever.

              Look out, here we come

The Angels entered the weekend riding a season-high six-game win streak. During the surge they plated 47 runs (7.8 per game) on 78 hits, including 35 extra-base hits (15 home runs) and a .421 batting average with runners in scoring position.

Torii Hunter has been having the best year of his career. The gold glove CF was hitting .321 BA with 16 HR’s and 51 RBI’s and a slugging percentage of .615 prior to the start of this series.

Hunter has filled the void left by Vladimir Guerrero this season. Guerrero was limited to pinch hitting in the series at San Francisco, where he delivered pinch singles in all three games. Guerrero was cleared to begin a throwing program for the first time since suffering a torn pectoral muscle in the spring.

Meanwhile, Dodgers entered the weekend with the majors' best record. They have been in first place in the National League West for 67 consecutive days and held a nine and a half game lead over the San Francisco Giants.

Outfielder Juan Pierre has filled in admirably for Manny Ramirez. But manager Joe Torre realizes the pop in Pierre’s bat (0 HR’s and a .422 slugging percentage) pales in comparison to Ramirez, who is eligible to return from a 50-game suspension on July 3.
Torre said it was possible that Ramirez would start out playing for Class-A Inland Empire next Thursday.

"That's what we're thinking about. Just for the convenience of the whole thing," Torre told the media. "That's still conversational right now. There's nothing been scheduled. We've got to get him back on the field first."

Prior to taking on the Angels, the Dodgers were 23-14 since Manny’s suspension began.

              Holding form

While he’s struggled since straining his forearm in the spring, Lackey struck out a season-high 10 batters in seven innings of work and got the win over the Giants Monday. It was his best performance of the season and the Angles are hopeful he has turned the corner.

Lackey is 12-3 in interleague play during his career, the fourth highest win percentage of any pitcher with at least 10 wins in interleague play. Sunday will mark Lackey’s seventh start of the season, only his second at home.

Kershaw scattered four hits over 5 2-3 scoreless innings and struck out eight against Oakland Tuesday. He left with the no-decision, as the Dodgers blew a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning. Kershaw is now winless in his last three starts (0-2).

              History says

Lackey is 13-4 with a 2.74 ERA in his 17 career home-team starts in June. He is also 11-3 in his last 14 starts overall in June. On the flip side, Kershaw is 2-4 with a 6.70 ERA in his last six road teams starts, issuing four or more walks in five of those games.

The Angels have had their prayers answered at home on Sundays, winning 15 of the last 16 games.

Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins [2:10 PM ET]

Astros: Houston is just 5-12 in its last 17 interleague matchups. The Astros have lost seven of their past nine games to Minnesota. Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez does not have a strong interleague mark and is in bad form right now. Rodriguez is 5-6 with a 5.02 EA in 14 interleague starts. Houston is 7-19 in Rodriguez’s last 26 road outings versus a team with a winning record. Rodriguez opened with a 5-2 record and 1.83 ERA during his first nine starts this season. Since then, though, he has dropped four of his last five appearances and has a 6.93 ERA during that span. Rodriguez was whacked around in his last start. He yielded six runs, six hits and five walks in just four innings during a 6-1 loss to the Rangers Tuesday. The Rangers smacked three home runs against him. Lance Berkman is 3-for-30 against American League opponents this season.

The Astros are 5-16 in their last 21 games versus American League Central teams.
The Under is 14-3-1 in Houston’s past 18 interleague matchups.

Key Injuries - Geoff Blum (hamstring) is on the DL

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Twins (-$1.25, O/U 8.5): The Twins have yet to lose an interleague series this season. Minnesota is 8-3 in interleague competition. The Twins have won 11 of the past 12 times in interleague play when home against a left-handed starter. The Twins have won 72 percent (39-15) of their past 54 interleague home contests. Twins starter Glen Perkins is rounding into shape after coming off the DL because of elbow inflammation. Perkins allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings during an 8-2 win against the Pirates in his last start Tuesday. Perkins has never faced the Astros. He is 3-0 with a 3.96 ERA in four career interleague starts. Joe Mauer is batting .417 with 42 RBIs in 45 games since returning from the DL because of kidney surgery. Dodgers: The Dodgers have won 12 of their last 17 road games. The Dodgers are 1-4 in Clayton Kershaw’s past five interleague starts. Kershaw bounced back from his worst start of the season by blanking the Athletics for 5 2/3 innings Tuesday. Kershaw, though, walked three and threw 105 pitches. He did fan eight. In his previous start June 10, Kershaw was roughed up by the Padres in just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs on five hits and walked four. The 21-year-old lefty is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in one career start versus the Angels.

The Dodgers are 16-5 in the finale of a three-game series.

The Angels have won 17 of Lackey’s last 22 interleague starts. Lackey has been brilliant versus the Dodgers. He’s 5-1 against them in eight starts with a 1.50 ERA in 54 innings pitched. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Dream at Connecticut Sun (-7.5, 153)

Atlanta (1-2) dropped its second straight Friday night, 81-73 at Chicago.

After averaging 17.5 points in her first two games back in the league since 2007, Chamique Holdsclaw was held to seven against the Sky.

Top draft pick Angel McCoughtry and Sancho Lyttle, acquired along with Michelle Snow from Houston, are the only two players to score in double figures in each game for coach Marynell Meadors' revamped team.

"Everybody has to remember we're a work in progress," Meadors said. "This is our second year, but we've got a lot of good players who just haven't played together.''

                            Pick: Connecticut -7.5

Seattle Storm at Chicago Sky (+1, 143)

The Seattle Storm have been the busiest team in the WNBA this season. So far, it hasn't seemed to bother them.

Playing their fifth game in nine days and fourth on the road, the Storm look to continue their hot start and stay unbeaten against the host Chicago Sky on Sunday night.

After suffering its first loss of the season, 73-66 at Indiana on Tuesday night, Seattle (3-1) bounced back to hand Minnesota its first defeat in Friday night's 88-71 road victory. The Storm held the Lynx, the league's top-scoring team at 95.0 points per game, to 10 in the first quarter and never trailed after that.

"They've proven they can score, and they do a good job in transition," said Seattle guard Sue Bird, who had 15 points and nine assists. "Early on, we sent three, four players back at a time. We didn't want them to get off to a good start in transition, especially on their home court because that can really energize a team."

Lauren Jackson led the way with 22 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. After re-signing with the Storm last month, the two-time MVP is second in the league with 22.8 points per game.

She was held to 14 on May 17, 2008 in a season-opening 67-61 home win over the Sky, and Seattle won 70-62 at Chicago on Sept. 4 without Jackson, who missed 13 games due to the Olympics and an ankle injury. The Storm are 6-0 against the Sky in Chicago's three seasons.

                            Pick: Seattle -1
