    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, June 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: David Wright and the Mets take on the Rays, the Cardinals battle the Royals, and the U.S. Open continues at Bethpage Black.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Mets ace Johan Santana (8-4, 3.29 ERA) will be looking to bounce back from an awful outing when he takes to the mound at home against the Rays and James Shields (5-5, 3.52 ERA) on Saturday afternoon. Lefthander Santana was pounded for nine earned runs on nine hits over just three innings of work by the Yankees last time out. Righthander Shields picked up a no-decision against the Nationals in his last outing, surrendering four earned runs over his 6 1-3 innings.

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter (4-1, 1.59 ERA) will face the Royals' Brian Bannister (5-3, 4.10 ERA) in their matchup in Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. Righthander Carpenter was tagged with his first loss of the season in his last trip to the mound, giving up three earned runs over seven innings against the Indians. Righthander Bannister pitched a gem last time out against the Reds, surrendering just a single unearned run on four hits over eight innings of work.

As well, the Los Angeles teams will pit brother vs. brother on Saturday night, with the Dodgers' Jeff Weaver (3-1, 3.72 ERA) taking on the Angels' Jered Weaver (7-2, 2.08 ERA) in Anaheim. Righthander Jeff Weaver has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation for the Dodgers this season; in his last outing against the Padres he tossed 2 1-3 scoreless innings. Righthander Jered Weaver has won four straight games, tossing a shutout against the Padres in his start last Sunday.

Also on the MLB schedule for Saturday: Cleveland at the Cubs, Milwaukee at Detroit, Baltimore at Philadelphia, Toronto at Washington, Atlanta at Boston, the Yankees at Florida, Houston at Minnesota, the White Sox at Cincinnati, Texas at San Francisco, Oakland at San Diego, and Arizona at Seattle. The non-interleague matchup for Saturday has Pittsburgh continuing their set in Colorado.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The first round of the U.S. Open was finally completed on Friday, with Mike Weir shooting a 6-under 64 to take the early lead. Tiger Woods finished his opening round at 4-over. The second round began late on Friday and continues Saturday.

Finally, there's just one WNBA game on the schedule for Saturday night, with Chicago at Washington. Both of those teams also played on Friday night (Chicago was at Connecticut, Washington was at Atlanta) as they jostle for position at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Mystics forward Marissa Coleman is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Aaron said progress has been made, but he'd like to see MLB do more to promote black involvement and opportunities in the game.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at Philadelphia Phillies (-158, 9.5)

Are the world champions ever going to get things figured out at home?

The Philadelphia Phillies (36-28) are in first place in the National League East, mainly because of their major league-best 23-8 road record. At home, they are just 13-19. Only Arizona and Washington are worse.

In 11 home series this year, the Phillies are 2-8-1, with both series wins coming against the lowly Nationals.

On its current homestand, Philadelphia has dropped two of three at home to Boston before being swept by Toronto, which has nearly half its pitching staff on the disabled list. Its lone win came Sunday against Josh Beckett, the first time the Phils have been home underdogs this year.

Philadelphia's awful return rate as a home favorite is costing bettors. The Phillies have the fourth-best winning percentage but are just eighth in money at $272 for the season. With a similar overall record, Milwaukee (37-29) has returned $743.

In town are the Orioles (29-37), who are 8-20 on the road and have been road favorites just twice this year. Overall, Baltimore has won four of five - all against the NL - and might be worth a look.

            Pick: Baltimore

Milwaukee Brewers at Detroit Tigers (-103, 10)

Welcome to The Show, Alfredo Figaro.

With Dontrelle Willis on the disabled list, Figaro makes his major league debut for the Detroit Tigers against the suddenly bopping Milwaukee Brewers.

A 24-year-old Dominican righthander, Figaro has a fastball in the 90s and has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning over the last year and a half. He is the cousin of Tigers pitcher Fernando Rodney.

Figaro was 12-2 with a 2.05 ERA with Single-A West Michigan before moving on to Single-A Clearwater in 2008. This year, Figaro was 5-2 with a 4.10 ERA at Double-A Erie, twice winning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, including last week.

On Saturday, the Tigers just need Figaro to be pitcher of the day. He will be facing the free-swinging Brewers, who compiled 30 runs and 40 hits - including five homers - in a three-game sweep at Cleveland.

Milwaukee has topped the total in five of its last seven games.

            Pick: Milwaukee

              (published 6-19-09)

              MLB Betting: Weekend Series Preview

A couple of baseball's postseason hopefuls hook up for an interesting interleague series when the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays hit the Big Apple for three games with the New York Mets beginning Friday night at Citi Field.

Andy Sonnanstine (5-6, 6.65, 1.55 WHIP) gets the start for Tampa in Friday's series opener (7:10 pm Eastern), against Fernando Nieve (1-0, 2.08, 0.81 WHIP) for New York. As of early Friday morning, BetJamaica.com is listing the Rays and Sonnanstine as -106 favorites for Friday, with the Mets and Nieve “getting” -104 as home underdogs. The game has been tagged with an over/under of 9.5.

James Shields (5-5, 3.52, 1.32) will take the hill for Tampa Saturday vs. Johan Santana (8-4, 3.29, 1.22) for the Mets (4:10 pm E, Fox). And Jeff Niemann (6-4, 4.21, 1.45) will go on Sunday for the Rays against Mike Pelfrey (5-2, 4.56, 1.46) for NY (1:10 pm E).

Tampa just dropped two of three games to the Rockies in Denver this week, but has won six of its last eight. Going into Friday's play, the Rays sit in fourth place in the AL East, six games back of the division-leading Boston Red Sox.

The Mets just lost two of three games to the Orioles in Baltimore, capped by a 5-4 loss Thursday in which closer Francisco Rodriguez coughed up a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth. In losing their last three series, New York has gone 3-6, and dropped to three games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East.

TB is two games over .500 on the season, but just 14-21 on the road. The Mets, meanwhile, are also two games above .500, and are 18-11 at home this year.

Tampa is a collective 21-19 when Sonnanstine, Shields and Niemann start this season, with the totals going 17-21. On the other side of this matchup, the Mets are 16-9 when Pelfrey and Santana start this season (Nieve has started just once), with the totals going 11-12.

These two teams have not met on the diamond since 2001.

Games played at Citi Field have averaged 8.6 total runs this season, which ranks 19th among all ML ballparks, as the totals have gone 13-14-2 in Mets home games. And only 48 home runs have been hit at Citi Field, the fourth-fewest total this year among all ballparks.

On the injury front, New York is still without 1B Carlos Delgado, SS Jose Reyes and RP JJ Putz, who are all sidelined with various ailments.

The totals are 33-32 in Rays games this season, as the majors' highest-scoring offense has helped Tampa games average 10.3 runs. The O/Us are 29-30 in Mets games this year, which are averaging 9.3 total runs.

The Rays rank 5th in the majors in team BA at .275, 4th in team OBP at .356, and 4th in home runs with 92.

New York ranks 3rd in the majors this season in team BA at .279, 28th in home runs with just 41, but 1st in team OBP at .359.

Just before this season started, the Mets were at +115 to win the NL East this year, +275 to win the NL pennant and +600 to win the World Series, with a regular-season wins over/under of 89.5. As of Friday morning the Mets were at +1,200 to win the Series, and were on a pace to win 84 games.

Tampa began this season getting +275 to win the AL East, +500 to win the pennant and +1,200 to win the World Series, with a season wins O/U of 89.5. As of Friday morning, the Rays were getting +2,000 to win the Series, and were on a pace to win 83 games.

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Braves at Red Sox
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Boston Red Sox (-163, 8.5)

                Braves battle BoSox

The Atlanta Braves try and salvage an America- League road schedule that has been less than kind this month. After a three-game sweep of Toronto at Turner Field, the Braves traveled to Baltimore to meet the Orioles, who weren't impressed by Atlanta's success against their fellow AL East counterparts.

In a three game series at Camden Yards, the Braves went 1-2 and were outscored 19-6 in both losses combined. With the pair of loses, Atlanta is now 1-4 in its last five interleague road games. It is also 1-4 in its last five overall.

For the Red Sox, National League opponents started to bring trouble as the Mets took two of three from Boston at Fenway as interleague play began this season. Since, Boston's won back-to-back interleague series, first taking two of three in Philly and then taking two of three from Florida in Boston (Game 3 of the Florida series was called in the sixth inning due to rain. It was Florida's only win, 2-1). Coming off of a loss, the Red Sox are undefeated in their last four contests, they are also 7-1 in their last eight after scoring two runs or less in their previous game.

                On the Lowe down

The return of longtime Atlanta Braves pitcher and first-year member of the Red Sox, John Smoltz, absolutely looms over Boston. Though Smoltz is slated to return next week against the Nationals, he was considered for a weekend start against his former club.

Instead, the intrigue falls onto Derek Lowe, who will be playing in Boston for the first time since 2004 when he helped the Red Sox win their first World Series in 86 years. Lowe finished 3-0 in the 2004 post season, recording an ERA of only 1.86. He remains the only pitcher in major league history to record wins in the final game of each series (beating the Angles in the ALDS, the Yankees in the ALCS and St. Louis in the World Series).

Lowe comes into Fenway with a 7-4 record in 2009, registering just one win in his last four outings. He was roughed up by Baltimore his last time out, being tagged for eight hits and seven earned runs over 2 1-3 innings. The right-handed Lowe could be troublesome on the mound as Boston's 4-1 in its last five games when facing a right-handed starter. The Braves are also 2-8 in their last 10 against Boston.

                Book it Beckett

You can dwell on Josh Beckett's last start in Philadelphia all you want, but save yourself the aggravation and simply throw it out. Before the Boston right-hander was slammed for six earned runs on 11 hits, Beckett strung together an impressive streak of seven consecutive quality starts.

Though Beckett enters Saturday's start with a lifetime record of 6-7 against the Braves, he's 3-0 currently on the season when he starts at Fenway. Hitters are only swinging for a .245 BA when he takes the mound in Boston as well. Considering that Atlanta is 1-4 in its last five when facing a right-handed starter, Beckett and the BoSox seem to be the easy choice here.

The under is 10-1-2 in Boston's last 13 home games. The under is also 7-1-2 in Boston's last 10 interleague home games. The under favors Atlanta as well, going 6-1-1 in the last eight interleague road games against a team with a winning record (Boston's well over 10 games above .500).

                Three strikes

Head to head, the under is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings in Boston.
Under is 4-1-1 in Red Sox last six interleague home games vs. a right-handed starter.
Braves are 4-1 in their last five interleague games vs. a right-handed starter.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Mets [4:10 PM ET]

Rays: The Rays are 6-0 in their past six Saturday games. Tampa Bay, though, historically struggles away from Tropicana Field. The Rays have lost 22 of 36 away from home this season. They are 2-10 in their last 12 road matchups. James Shields is Tampa Bay’s No. 1 starter, but he’s usually far less effective away from home. Shields is 13-19 with a 4.73 ERA in 47 career road starts. Tampa Bay is 6-21 in Shields’ last 27 road starts as an away underdog. Shields is 1-3 on the road this season with a 4.15 ERA, compared to a home mark of 4-2 with a 3.07 ERA. This is Shields’ first away start since May 24 when he allowed four earned runs on 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings against Florida in a 5-4 loss where he didn’t factor in the decision. Shields has never faced the Mets before.

The Under has cashed 12 of the past 14 times in Shields’ last 14 starts as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Akinori Iwamura (knee) and Troy Percival (shoulder) are on the DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (-$1.25, O/U 7.5 over -$1.20): The Mets are 11-3 in Johan Santana’s last 14 home starts. Santana, however, is coming off the worst start of his career. Santana was battered for a career-worst nine earned runs in three innings against the Yankees on Sunday in a 15-0 loss. The lefty with the great change-up, opened the season in high style going 4-2 with a 0.78 ERA in his first seven starts. But during his past six starts, Santana has a 6.50 ERA. The Mets are 19-7 (73 percent) in Santana’s past 26 starts. The Mets are playing well at their new Citi Field, winning 13 of their last 18 home contests. The Mets are 7-1 in their last eight games as a home favorite. The Mets have been winning despite missing the power-hitting of injured first baseman Carlos Delgado and the all-around play of star shortstop Jose Reyes, out with a calf injury.

The Under is 11-4-1 in the Mets’ last 15 home games versus a team with a losing road record.

Key Injuries - Carlos Delgado (hip), Jose Reyes (calf) and J.J. Putz (elbow) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)

New York Yankees at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-$1.10, O/U 8): Yankees manager Joe Girardi is familiar with the Marlins and National League baseball having managed the Marlins three years ago. Yankees starting pitcher A.J. Burnett also knows the Marlins well, having spent seven seasons with them. Burnett was brilliant in his last start, tossing seven shutout innings on Sunday while allowing four hits and striking out eight in a 15-0 thrashing of the Mets. The right-hander is 14-6 with a 3.19 ERA in 28 interleague starts. Star shortstop Derek Jeter returned to New York’s lineup on Friday after not starting the previous two games because of a sore ankle. Alex Rodriguez won’t be in the Yankees’ lineup. He’s benched for the second of two games for what the Yankees are calling fatigue. Rodriguez’s is batting just .145 this month and is hitless in his last 15 at bats. The Yankees have won 21 of their last 31 games when favored.

The Under is 7-1-1 in New York’s last nine games versus a right-handed starter.
The Under is 8-2-1 in the Yankees’ past 11 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - None.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Marlins: Josh Johnson has won his past three decisions. The 25-year-old right-hander has a 3.11 ERA in his last five starts, all Florida victories. The Marlins are 11-3 in Johnson’s 14 starts this season. Florida is 22-6 in Johnson’s past 28 starts. Johnson threw a complete-game seven-hitter in his last start on Sunday, beating Toronto on the road, 11-3. It was Johnson’s sixth consecutive quality start. Florida is 9-2 in Johnson’s 11 home starts. This is Johnson’s first start versus the Yankees. The Marlins entered this series with the second-highest team batting average in June at .289. Only the Angels ranked higher. However, two of their key batters are in slumps. Outfielder Jeremy Hermida is hitless in his last 16 at-bats, while cleanup hitter Jorge Cantu has just one homer in his last 39 games. The Marlins are 2-9 in their last 11 games as a home underdog.

The Over is 21-6-5 in Florida’s last 32 interleague contests.

                      Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

                        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

                        Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs)

While the Indians have hit the ball well, they'll be in for a challenge against Ted Lilly (7-4, 2.94 ERA).

Lilly allowed two runs and nine hits while striking out six in 7 2-3 innings of a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Sunday. He is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA in his last four starts, and 4-1 with an NL-best 1.48 home ERA in six at Wrigley.

                        Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals)

St. Louis will turn to ace Chris Carpenter (4-1, 1.59), who looks to bounce back from his first loss. He gave up three runs over seven innings Sunday, getting outpitched by reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee in a 3-0 loss at Cleveland.

The right-hander fell to 2-4 with a 5.10 ERA in seven career interleague starts with St. Louis. That includes a 9-6 win over the Royals on May 19, 2006, in which he allowed six runs over six innings.

That was Carpenter's only start against Kansas City since 2002.

                        Slumping

                        David Bush (Milwaukee Brewers)

Milwaukee, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, sends right-hander Dave Bush (3-3, 5.31 ERA) to the mound. Bush will try to bounce back from his worst outing of the season after matching a career high with eight runs allowed in 3 1-3 innings of a 14-12 win at Cleveland on Monday.

"Somehow mechanically I'm out of sync," said Bush, 0-3 with an 8.64 ERA in his last five starts.

Bush is 0-1 with an 11.05 ERA in two career starts against Detroit. He last faced the Tigers in 2005 when pitching for Toronto.

                        Johan Santana (New York Mets)

New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel says he's not really concerned about ace Johan Santana, but it's safe to say he'll be looking for improvement Saturday.

Coming off the worst start of his brilliant career, so will Santana.

The star left-hander will return to Citi Field to face the streaky Tampa Bay Rays, who will be hoping to put a stop to their latest three-game skid.

Santana was almost untouchable through the first two months of the season, going 7-2 with a 1.77 ERA and striking out 86 in 66 innings.

The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner has looked like a different pitcher lately, losing two of his last three starts. None was worse than Sunday's outing at Yankee Stadium, when he gave up a career-high nine runs in three-plus innings of a 15-0 loss.

"Everyone hits a bump in the road every now and then," Manuel said.

                        Debuting

                        Alfredo Figaro (Detroit Tigers)

In 11 starts at Double-A Erie, Figaro was 5-2 with a 4.10 ERA. The 24-year-old right-hander, a cousin of Tigers closer Fernando Rodney, had 59 strikeouts in 68 innings for the SeaWolves.

"He's a talented kid," Leyland told the team's official Web site. "Is he ready? I don't know."

                        Returning

                        Charlie Morton (Pittsburgh Pirates)

Pittsburgh's Charlie Morton (0-0, 0.00) is looking to bounce back from an injury suffered in his debut with his new team. Morton, who was acquired from Atlanta in a four-player deal for Nate McLouth on June 3, left after one scoreless inning one week later against his former team because of a strained left hamstring.

"I was disappointed," the right-hander told the team's official Web site. "All I can do now is try to get better."

The Pirates (31-36) are trying to avoid their sixth straight loss in Denver and longest road skid since the series began in 1993.

Chicago Sky at Washington Mystics (-4, 148)

Two of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference last season, the Washington Mystics and Chicago Sky are off to surprisingly strong starts in 2009.

Each team, however, hopes to bounce back from a loss when they meet Saturday night at Washington's Verizon Center.

After allowing an average of 70 points in winning its first three games, Washington (3-1) fell 93-81 at Atlanta on Friday to become the last WNBA team to record a loss in 2009.

Alana Beard had 20 points for the Mystics, who shot 39.7 percent (25 for 63), but couldn't stop the Dream from shooting 45.9 percent (34 for 74) or outrebounding them 46-31.

"They killed us on the offensive boards and in the paint,'' said Beard, who's averaging 17.2 points. "We have to protect the paint. Those are the easy baskets and we did not do that.''

Despite this setback, Washington still leads the East after losing its final nine games during a disappointing 10-24 season in 2008.

Chicago (3-2), meanwhile, is only one-half game behind the Mystics after finishing 12-22 a year ago. Now in their fourth season, the Sky didn't record their third victory until the eighth game the last two years, and their 18th in 2006.

Despite having its three-game winning streak snapped in a 91-61 loss at Connecticut on Friday, Chicago still has confidence as it tries to maintain the best start in franchise history.

"We are not going to settle here, we are going to continue to improve," said guard Jia Perkins, who was held to nine points Friday after scoring 25 against the Sun at home on Tuesday. "We want to be a playoff team."

For that to happen, the Sky must play better on the road, where they've allowed 193 points while suffering their two losses. Connecticut shot 47.9 percent (35 for 73) Friday and forced 20 turnovers.

                              Pick: Over 148
