      Daily Sports Roundup

      Wednesday, June 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Royals send out their ace to take on the Diamondbacks, and the Yankees turn to an ice-cold pitcher against the Nationals.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Zack Greinke (8-2, 1.72 ERA) and his Royals will play host to Max Scherzer (3-4, 3.63 ERA) and the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Righthander Greinke has slowed down considerably since his hot start to the season, allowing 11 earned runs over his last 19 1-3 innings pitched (for one loss and two no-decisions). Righthander Scherzer didn't allow a run in either of his past two starts against the Padres and Giants, surrendering just six hits over his 12 2-3 innings.

As well, the Yankees will try to coax something out of struggling starter Chien-Ming Wang (0-4, 14.34 ERA) on Wednesday when they host the Nationals and John Lannan (3-5, 3.51 ERA). Righthander Wang lasted just 2 2-3 innings in a loss to the Red Sox last time out, giving up four earned runs on six hits. Lefthander Lannan has been a bright spot for the lowly Nationals this season; Lannan has surrendered three or fewer earned runs in nine of his last 10 starts.

Rounding out the MLB schedule for Wednesday: the White Sox at the Cubs, the Angels at San Francisco, Toronto at Philadelphia, the Mets at Baltimore, Milwaukee at Cleveland, Florida at Boston, Houston at Texas, Pittsburgh at Minnesota, Detroit at St. Louis, Tampa Bay at Colorado, Seattle at San Diego, Oakland at the Dodgers, and Atlanta at Cincinnati. Javier Vazquez (4-5, 3.31 ERA) starts for the Braves, and Micah Owings (3-7, 4.64 ERA) goes for the Reds.

      Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Elsewhere, there's just one game on the WNBA schedule for Wednesday night, with Minnesota at Phoenix. The Mercury have been unbeatable at home so far this year - going 3-0 both straight-up and against-the-spread - and they're coming off a 106-95 home win over Sacramento on Saturday. Diana Taurasi had 31 points for Phoenix in that victory, while Nicole Ohlde sat out with a foot injury.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

-- There are two D-I hoop jobs open; Holy Cross, USC; right now, the Crusaders have much better shot at being in the NCAAs next March.

-- Game 7 of Stanley Cup Finals got NHL's best TV rating since 1973.

-- 1,000,000 people voted for Manny Ramirez as an All-Star; why?

-- The odds of being dealt suited hole cards in Texas Hold 'em: 23.5%

-- Gas is 12 cents a gallon cheaper at a Hess station here, half-mile up the road from a more expensive Mobil station. How can this be?

-- Back in 70's, June 15 was interleague trading deadline, the way July 31 is now; that was awful early time to end interleague trading, and a very smart move to switch it to where it is now. .

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's Den: Umpiring statistics you might care about....

All these stats are through games of Saturday June 13.......

-- An average of 295.7 pitches are thrown in a big league game. with each hitter seeing 3.83 pitches per plate appearance.

-- The average half-inning lasts 16.5 pitches, which means that average pitcher throws 104 pitches, if he lasts six innings.

-- An average of 9.27 runs are scored in each game, with 4.7 walks and 13.6 strikeouts.

-- So far, 460 games stayed under the total, 425 went over.

-- Umpires whose games behind plate have gone over a lot: Gibson 6-2, Crawford 8-3, Johnson 7-3, Meals, Reilly, Cooper all 8-4.

        -- Under umpires: Fletcher 10-2, Hirschbeck 10-3, Gorman 9-3, Barrett 8-3.

-- Umps where home team wins a lot: Knight 12-2, Crawford 9-2, Scott, Everitt, both 10-3.

-- Umps where road team wins a lot: Reilly 9-3, Davidson, Diaz both 8-3, Nauert, Reliford both 8-4.

-- Umpires where favorites win a lot (figures based on $100 play on the favorite in each game): Hernandez +870, Meriwether +845, Iassogna +841, Guccione, +833

-- Umpires where underdogs fare well: Joyce +945, Hoye +830, Wendelstedt +788, Wegner, +763, Reilly +729

        -- Umps with highest pitches/batter: Knight 4.08, Everitt 3.97, Fletcher 3.96, Davis, Meals both 3.952, Barry 3.950.

        -- Umps with lowest pitches/batter: Bucknor 3.590, Tschida 3.592, Wolf 3.61, O'Nora 3.67, Hirschbeck 3.69.

        -- Umpires with highest walk/strikeout ratio: Marsh .748, Runge .746, Johnson .723, Crawford .687, Cousins .680.

        -- Umps with lowest walk/strikeout ratio: BWelke .370, Miller .375, Campos, .390, Scott .395.

-- Umps with most runs/game in their games behind dish: McClelland 12.6, Crawford 11.6, Gibson 11.22, TWelke 11.21, Iassogna 11.0.

        -- Umps with least runs/game: Fletcher 6.38, Hudson 7.0, O'Nora 7.21, Barry 7.36, Gorman 7.38.

His numbers don't reflect it so much yet this year, but not only is Jim Wolf a pitcher-friendly umpire, his brother Randy is a starting pitcher for the Dodgers. He, Hirschbeck, Gorman are always pitcher-friendly.

Arizona at Kansas City (8:10 p.m. EDT). Zack Greinke (8-2, 1.72 ERA) goes for his ninth win when the Royals host Max Scherzer (3-4, 3.63) and the Diamondbacks.

          STARS

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, hit his fifth home run in five games to help St. Louis rout Detroit and ace Justin Verlander 11-2.

          STILL GOING

Houston's Ivan Rodriguez tied Carlton Fisk's record for most games caught in a career with his 2,226th as the Astros lost 6-1 to the Rangers, Rodriguez's original team. Rodriguez shares the record and the nickname "Pudge'' with the Hall of Famer.

          SNAPPED

Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Tampa Bay snapped the Colorado Rockies' 11-game winning streak with a Rays' record 11 extra base hits. Longoria and Pena hit two of the Rays' five homers. Gabe Kapler, Ben Zobrist and B.J. Upton also homered. Colorado's winning streak was tied with Boston for the longest in the majors this season and also tied for the longest in Rockies' history. ... The Toronto Blue Jays earned their first interleague victory of the season, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 in 10 innings to break a seven-game skid against NL teams.

          STREAKS

The San Diego Padres set a major-league record with their 12th straight loss in interleague play when they fell 5-0 to Seattle. The Padres had been tied with the New York Mets for the longest interleague losing streak. The Padres have lost four straight interleague games this season and last won in 2007. San Diego is 5-22 in interleague games since June 20, 2007.

          SUPER AL

Albert Pujols hit his fifth home run in five games - and the longest homer at Busch Stadium this season - in the St. Louis Cardinals' 11-2 victory against Detroit. Pujols leads the majors with 23 homers. His latest traveled an estimated 446 feet. He was also intentionally walked twice, giving him a major league-leading 20.

          MUSCLING UP

Washington second baseman Anderson Hernandez hit the second home run of his career, a three-run shot against Yankees ace CC Sabathia in New York's 5-3 victory against the Nationals. Hernandez's last homer was Sept. 19, 2006, for the New York Mets against Florida.

          POWER OUTAGE

Adrian Gonzalez, tied for second in the NL in homers with 22, went without a home run for the 11th straight game. It's the longest long ball drought for the slugging first baseman this season.

          SPEAKING

"You could always tell he was going to be good. But he is starting to mature and you can see it in his pitching. He doesn't seem like he's 23.'' - Mariners catcher Jamie Burke on Felix Hernandez who pitched a two-hitter to beat San Diego 5-0.

          SEASONS

          June 17

1915 - George "Zip'' Zabel of the Chicago Cubs was called into the game against the Brooklyn Dodgers with two outs in the first inning. He won 4-3 in the 19th inning in the longest relief effort in the majors.

1960 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox connected for his 500th career home run off the Cleveland Indians. Williams, the fourth to accomplish the feat, hit a two-run homer off Wynn Hawkins in a 3-1 win.

1971 - Don Kessinger of the Chicago Cubs went 6-for-6, with five singles and a double, in a 7-6, 10-inning decision over the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

The Diamondbacks, who allowed 10 runs in the sixth inning on June 15 in Chicago, became the first team since the 1969 Mets to allow 10 runs in an inning in consecutive games. The Mets did it on one day - during a doubleheader against Houston.

2007 - Frank Thomas hit his record-breaking 244th homer as a designated hitter in Toronto's 4-2 loss to Washington. The solo shot in the third inning moved Thomas past Edgar Martinez for the most homers by a DH in major league history.

2008 - Seattle's Felix Hernandez struck out the side on nine pitches in the fourth inning of a 5-4 win over Florida, becoming the 13th pitcher in American League history to accomplish the feat.

            This Day in Baseball

On June 17 in Baseball History...

1941 - Joe DiMaggio is credited with a hit in his 30th consecutive game when an easy grounder to short bounces up and hits Luke Appling on the shoulder. Chicago beats the Yankees 8-7.

1943 - Player-manager Joe Cronin of the Red Sox hits two three-run pinch home runs, one in each game of a doubleheader, as Boston beats the St. Louis Browns 5-4 and loses 8-7. He had hit a three-run pinch homer two nights before against the A's, giving him three home runs in four at-bats. He will pinch-hit 42 times this year with 18 hits, including an A.L. record five pinch-hit homers.

1960 - A two-run home run off Wynn Hawkins at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium makes Ted Williams the fourth player in major-league history to hit 500 home runs. The Red Sox win 3-1.

1962 - Lou Brock of the Cubs hits a home run into the right-center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, 460 feet from home plate, in the first game of a Chicago doubleheader sweep, 8-7 and 4-3. He is the second player to reach those bleacher seats, Joe Adcock being the first.

1967 - A nine-hour and five-minute doubleheader between the Tigers and Athletics is the longest ever. The first game includes a rain delay, and the second goes 19 innings before a Dave Duncan home run wins it 6-5 for the A's. Detroit takes the opener 7-6.
1978 - Ron Guidry strikes out 18 batters in a four-hit 4-0 shutout of the Angels, setting an A.L. record for lefthanders. The victory raises the Yankee southpaw's record to 11-0.

1987 - Dick Howser dies at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. He led the Royals to their first World Championship in 1985, but was forced to give up managing during the 1986 season because of a brain tumor. His uniform number, 10, will be retired by the club on July 3.

1997 - 'The Freeway Series' hits the street in LA, and the Dodgers drive home with the first win in this interleague series on Todd Zeile's second home run of the game. The Dodgers trailed the Angels by one run in the ninth, but tied it on a wild pitch and won it 4-3 on Zeile's homer.

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Minnesota Twins (-180, 9)

                    Fear the Metrodome.

Not only are the Twins among the American League leaders in home victories, but they also entered the week with a sparkling, 5-1 record in interleague play against the Brewers and the Cubs. In the comfy confines of their own ballpark, the Twins are batting .281 as a team – nearly 15 points higher than their road average – and have scored 184 of their 315 runs in front of their home fans. Conversely, the Pirates are among the worst road teams in the league. Pittsburgh is hitting a horrendous .244 away from home – 22 points lower than their season average – and has hit a league-low 18 home runs in opponents’ parks.

If you’re still not sold, just look at Pittsburgh starter Ian Snell (1-7, 5.25 ERA). Snell is struggling this season, but has been even worse away from the Steel City. Opposing clubs are hitting .291 in their own parks and forcing Snell out before the seven inning in most cases.

                    Pick: Minnesota

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds (+129, 8.5)

                    Two words: Javier Vasquez.

The best pitcher in baseball you don’t know about, Atlanta’s Vasquez has been fantastic in his first season down south. The right-hander has a phenomenal 3.31 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP (second-best in the NL) and has struck out a staggering 105 batters (tops in the NL) in 84.1 innings.

The 32-year-old’s 4-5 record is deceiving. He's been on the unlucky end of several tough decisions and the victim of poor run support. But that won’t be an issue against the Reds.

Cincinnati is the worst right-handed pitching hitting team in the majors, batting a wretched .241 against righties. The team’s .316 on-base percentage against right-handers also is among the worst in baseball.

And the Reds already proved once this season they have no answer for the 11-year veteran. Vasquez was fantastic in a late-April start at Cincinnati, going six innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out nine against one walk, in a 4-3 win.

                    Pick: Atlanta

                      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

                      Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants)[/b]

Any doubts that Tim Lincecum’s Cy Young season was a flash in the pan are officially dead.

After a rough start to the schedule, the Giants' flame thrower has settled back into his familiar form, going undefeated in his past 11 starts. He is 6-0 and posting an ERA 2.15 during this span.

In his most recent outing, Lincecum went the distance, giving up seven hits and striking out eight batters in a complete-game shutout of the Oakland Athletics. Six of those K’s were against the final batter of an inning.

"He was in his own world tonight," center fielder Aaron Rowand told the San Jose Mercury News. "He made it easy for the rest of us."

That win improved Lincecum’s season count to 6-1 and trimmed his 2009 ERA to 2.66. He is second in the National League in strikeout with 103 whiffs on the year.

                      Gavin Floyd (Chicago White Sox)

Chicago’s Gavin Floyd is getting hotter with the weather. After a rough first month and a half of the schedule, Floyd has been nearly untouchable in his past five starts. He boasts a 1.67 ERA in that span and has helped the White Sox go 4-1 in those starts.

That’s a huge turnaround from his dismal 2-4 mark and beefy 7.71 ERA through his first eight appearances of 2009. In his most recent trip to the bump, Floyd pitched eight innings and allowed just one run on five hits against the Detroit Tigers.

"I hadn't been performing very well," Floyd told the media. "I was able to mentally block it out and just focus on where I've been going. I've been working at it in the bullpen and pretty much transferring it in the game. I think I was able to do that tonight."

                      Slumping

                      Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees)[/b]

The Yankees are hoping facing baseball’s worst team will spark something in struggling starter Chien-Ming Wang. The right-hander is winless in his five starts this season, posting a 0-4 recorded and an ERA over 14.00 in 21 1-3 innings split between starting and bullpen work.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters that Wednesday’s start will help the team determine what they want to do with Wang. If he continues to slide, New York could send the former 19-game winner back to the minors.

"We need Chien-Ming Wang," Cashman told the press. "This is an important step. We know what he's capable of. The velocity and the sink are there. Maybe his confidence isn't there."

                      Todd Wellemeyer (St. Louis Cardinals)

The St. Louis Cardinals are frantically searching the clubhouse for the five miles per hour missing from starter Todd Wellemeyer’s fastball. The righty is lacking the same pop on his pitches, leading to his recent funk.

In his past three starts, Wellemeyer is 0-2 and lugging an ERA of 7.00. His most recent appearance was a six-inning, 11-hit, five-run drubbing at the hands of the Florida Marlins (St. Louis actually won 6-5, earning Wellemeyer his second no-decision of the season).

"Last year I was throwing 94-96 (mph), this year I'm topping out at 90-91," he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I don't know what it is but there's definitely a difference. It makes things more of a challenge, that's for sure."

Wellemeyer is 5-6 and is posting a 5.50 ERA this season.

MLB Notes: White Sox at Cubs
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crosstown rivals: Cubs set as big faves for Game 1

CHICAGO (AP) -White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen swears he sees rats bigger than pigs in the batting cage and gets sick whenever he visits Wrigley Field.

Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano acknowledged this season he turns ivy green with envy when he sees the facilities at other stadiums.

The old ballpark, for all its charm, certainly has its flaws. But it's going nowhere.

So, for that matter, are Chicago's baseball teams at the moment.

''It might be the battle of who's the worst in town,'' Guillen said over the weekend in Milwaukee.

                        He was joking. Sorta.

Division winners a year ago, both teams are big disappointments heading into their three-game series at Wrigley that starts Tuesday. Oddsmakers have the Cubs set as -155 favorites with Zambrano set to start. No total has been set on the game, as usual for games at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are 30-30 after winning back-to-back NL Central titles and just fired their hitting coach in an effort to jump-start their sputtering lineup. The news isn't much better on the South Side, where the White Sox are 30-34.

The White Sox rank 24th in the majors with a .251 batting average, while the Cubs are 26th at .246. A healthy and productive Carlos Quentin would certainly help the White Sox, but he was struggling before he went on the disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

The Cubs miss Aramis Ramirez, who was batting .364 when he dislocated his left shoulder last month. Compounding matters is that Alfonso Soriano (.229), Milton Bradley (.227) and Geovany Soto (.223) are stuck in season-long slumps. Kosuke Fukudome is in a 3-for-36 skid after another quick start, but apparently this rut is nothing like last year's freefall.

''It is definitely different from last year,'' he said through an interpreter.

Manager Lou Piniella would like him to shorten his swing. He also had another request.

''Why don't we focus on the positive thing, which is our pitching has been good?'' Piniella said before Sunday's 3-2 win over Minnesota. ''Why don't we talk about pitching? Why don't we talk about some of the good defensive plays that we make and the fact that these kids are playing hard and they're trying? Why don't we focus on those things?''

About a half hour after he made that request, general manager Jim Hendry announced hitting coach Gerald Perry was fired. So much for that warm, fuzzy, feel-good moment.

For all their struggles, the Cubs are just 2 1/2 games out of first place and the White Sox are only 4 1/2 off the AL Central lead.

''We've been trying to tell ourselves stay positive no matter how much negativity we hear because we're still right there,'' the Cubs' Derrek Lee said.

Now they're heading into what figures to be an emotionally charged series even if both teams are struggling. It usually is whether they're both in first place, as they were a year ago, or not, and the White Sox's A.J. Pierzynski often winds up in the middle of the drama.

Three years ago at U.S. Cellular Field, he barreled over Cubs catcher Michael Barrett and smacked the plate. Barrett punched him in the face, one big swing sparking a bench-clearing brawl, and there was more drama the next day.

Pierzynski had a conversation with Barrett during the seventh, a few innings after a heated exchange with Zambrano.

That happened when Pierzynski clapped his hands after hitting a home run in the fourth, and the pitcher yelled and gestured. As he crossed the plate, Pierzynski thumped his chest twice and pointed toward the sky, as Zambrano does after innings.

Teammates restrained Zambrano as he shouted at the White Sox dugout, and the White Sox lined the top step but stayed put. Zambrano later said he made a mistake acknowledging Pierzynski and that he was actually yelling at third-base coach Joey Cora.

Pierzynski landed another big hit a few weeks later at Wrigley Field when he drove a three-run homer off closer Ryan Dempster to cap a two-out rally in the ninth and lift the White Sox over the Cubs 8-6. Fans showered the field with cups, plastic bottles and other items, causing about a five-minute delay.

''There's just been so many things that's happened,'' Pierzynski said. ''The fans get into it. In the five years I've been a part of it, there's been so many crazy things that have happened, it's just good times.''

But right now, it's rough times for both teams. Will it last?

''In the end of the season both teams should be in the pennant race - both teams, no doubt,'' Guillen said.

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Boston Red Sox [7:10 PM ET]

Marlins: Marlins starter Andrew Miller is one of those young pitchers with lots of potential. The Marlins are waiting for that potential to become consistent. Miller did impress in his last start. He left Thursday’s start against St. Louis ahead after allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. The Marlins’ bullpen couldn’t hold the lead, though, and Miller was denied a second straight win in a 6-5 loss. Florida has lost nine of the past 13 times Miller has pitched. The Marlins are 1-8 in Miller’s past nine starts as an underdog. The former Detroit lefty faced Boston once while he was in the American League. He yielded just one run in seven innings of a 9-2 victory on July 6, 2007. Mark Kotsay is the only Red Sox to record a hit against Miller. Florida is 2-6 in its last eight matchups at Fenway Park.

The Marlins are 3-7 in their last 10 interleague contests when facing a right-handed starter.

The Over is 7-0-2 in Florida’s last nine interleague road games.

                              Key Injuries - None.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Red Sox (-$1.70, O/U 10 under -$1.20): Boston has the best home record in baseball at 22-8 and has won 45 of its last 59 interleague matchups. Boston is 11-3 in its last 14 games. The Red Sox are averaging 6.4 runs in their last nine games. Brady Penny has a 5.32 ERA, but has pitched much better than he did early in the season. If you discount Penny’s second-to-last start – in which he gave up five runs in a 5-1 loss to Texas – the right-hander has allowed just seven runs in his last four starts spanning 24 innings. During this time frame, Penny has a 19-to-four strikeout-to-walk ratio. Penny didn’t give up a run in his last start against the Yankees on Thursday. Penny threw six scoreless innings, while allowing six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He didn’t get a decision in Boston’s 4-3 victory. Penny did throw a season-high 117 pitches in that game.

The Under is 20-7-3 in the Red Sox’s last 30 games.

Key Injuries - Jed Lowrie (wrist) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Astros: It’s not Roy Oswalt or Wandy Rodriguez who holds the Astros’ longest scoreless pitching streak this season. It’s Russ Ortiz. He puts his 17 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak on the line tonight. The veteran right-hander pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his previous start against the Cubs on Thursday. Ortiz had been pitching in relief, but rejoined the Astros’ starting rotation when Felipe Paulino had to miss a start because of an injured groin. Ortiz has a 2.49 ERA in relief this season, compared to 4.43 as a starter. He is 7-6 with a 3.75 ERA lifetime in interleague competition, including 22 starts. Astros second baseman Kaz Matsui came off the DL on Tuesday. He had been out since May 26 with a strained right hamstring. However, third baseman Geoff Blum was put on the DL because of a hamstring injury. Houston is 0-5 versus Texas this year.

The Astros are 2-9 in their last 11 games when playing a team with a winning mark.
The Under is 10-2-1 in Houston’s past 13 interleague contests.

Key Injuries - Geoff Blum (hamstring) is on the DL.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Rangers (-$1.50, O/U 10.5 over $1.25): Southpaw Matt Harrison makes his first big league start since May 25 when he went out with an inflamed shoulder. Harrison was 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA in his last two starts before suffering the injury. Before then, though, he had won four straight outings with two complete games in a row. Left-handed hitters are batting just .185 versus Harrison. The 23-year-old made two rehab starts with Double-A Frisco, giving up two earned runs in seven innings during those games. Harrison is 5-2 with a 5.94 ERA in his career at home. Texas is 1-5 in Harrison’s last six starts as a home favorite. Designated hitter Andruw Jones, a former Atlanta Braves center fielder, loves to bat against Ortiz. He’s 10-for-24 (.417) against him in his career. The Rangers are 15-4 in their last 19 home games against a team with a losing road record.

The Over is 7-0 in Harrison’s last seven starts as a home favorite.

Key Injuries - Josh Hamilton (abdominal) and Frank Francisco (shoulder) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)
