    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, June 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Boston tries to grab an interleague win in Philadelphia, while the Mariners and Rockies continue their series in Colorado.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Red Sox will send Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-4, 7.33 ERA) to the mound in their interleague matchup in Philadelphia on Saturday night. Righthander Matsuzaka was knocked around for five earned runs on 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings of work in a loss against the Rangers in his last start, and he hasn't pitched into the seventh inning all season long. The Phillies will counter Dice-K with lefthander Antonio Bastardo (2-0, 2.45 ERA), who has won both of his Major League starts this year.

Out west on Saturday the Rockies will send Jason Marquis (8-4, 3.98 ERA) to the mound at home against the Mariners and Brandon Morrow (0-3, 6.38 ERA). Righthander Morrow was expected to be sent to AAA to join their rotation, but Erik Bedard's sore shoulder will push him into action on Saturday. Righthander Marquis grabbed his eighth victory of the season last time out against the Cardinals, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits in 6 2-3 innings pitched.

Elsewhere on the diamond on Saturday it'll be Minnesota the Cubs, Florida at Toronto, St. Louis at Cleveland, the White Sox at Milwaukee, the Mets at the Yankees, Washington at Tampa Bay, Detroit at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Baltimore, Cincinnati at Kansas City, the Dodgers at Texas, San Diego at the Angels, and Oakland at San Francisco. As well, the Astros and D-Backs continue their NL-only set, with Roy Oswalt (2-3, 4.66 ERA) taking on Jon Garland (4-6, 5.61 ERA).

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA schedule for Saturday, with Sacramento at Phoenix and New York at San Antonio. The Liberty will be trying to secure their first victory of the season, having fallen to Connecticut and Phoenix in their opening two contests. New York guard Shameka Christon is day-to-day with an ankle injury and considered questionable for Saturday night.

      SCOREBOARD

      Saturday, June 13

Los Angeles Dodgers at Texas (8:05 p.m.). The Rangers go for their third consecutive home shutout, after getting back-to-back ones for the first time since 1981.

      STARS

      Friday

-Joe Mauer, Twins, homered and drove in three runs to lead Minnesota to a 7-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

-Tim Lincecum, Giants, pitched a seven-hitter for his third career complete game and first this season, helping San Francisco win 3-0 against the Oakland Athletics.

-Brian McCann, Braves, tied a career high with four hits to help Atlanta win 7-2 at the Baltimore Orioles.

-Jacoby Ellsbury, Red Sox, hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 13th inning and Boston beat the Phillies 5-2 in Philadelphia.

-Rick Porcello, Tigers, threw seven crisp innings and had a pair of RBI singles for his first major league hits, leading Detroit to a 3-1 victory at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

-Luke Hochevar, Royals, tossed a three-hitter in his first career complete game, needing just 80 pitches to complete Kansas City's 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

-Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales, Angels, homered to help Los Angeles beat the San Diego Padres 11-6.

-Corey Hart, Brewers, drove in three runs and saved two more with a diving catch in Milwaukee's 7-2 win against the Chicago White Sox.

-Shin-Soo Choo, Indians, had three RBIs in Cleveland's 7-3 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals.

-Cody Ross, Marlins, hit a tiebreaking grand slam in Florida's 7-3 win at the Toronto Blue Jays.

-Ubaldo Jimenez, Rockies, pitched his second career complete game and had an RBI single, leading Colorado to a 6-4 win over the Seattle Mariners.

      WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

Mets second baseman Luis Castillo dropped Alex Rodriguez's lazy popup with two outs in the ninth inning as two runs scored, helping the Yankees escape with a wild 9-8 victory over the Mets on Friday night. Castillo allowed the ball to pop out of his glove as he tried for a one-handed catch on the right field grass. The Yankees ran onto the field as Derek Jeter scored from second and Mark Teixeira from first.

      LONG TIME COMING

Vicente Padilla worked five effective innings and the Texas Rangers blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 to record shutouts on consecutive nights at home for the first time in 29 seasons. Texas, which beat Toronto 1-0 on Thursday night, had never posted shutout victories on back-to-back nights at home since Rangers Ballpark opened in 1994. The last time the Rangers held visitors scoreless on consecutive days was April 1981, when they had four in a row.

      THIS PITCHER CAN HIT

Rick Porcello threw seven crisp innings and had a pair of RBI singles for his first major league hits, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 victory at Pittsburgh. Porcello became the first Tigers pitcher with a multihit game since Jeff Weaver had two hits on June 23, 2002, against Florida. He also was the first Detroit pitcher to collect more than one RBI in a game since Joe Coleman drove in three on Sept. 21, 1972, at Boston, the season before the designated hitter was adopted by the AL.

      GO THE DISTANCE

Tim Lincecum, Luke Hochevar, Ubaldo Jimenez and Dan Haren each threw a complete game. Lincecum pitched a seven-hitter to lead San Francisco to a 3-0 victory over Oakland. Hochevar needed just 80 pitches to finish a three-hitter, picking up his first career complete game in Kansas City's 4-1 win over Cincinnati. Jimenez pitched his second career complete game to help Colorado beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 in Denver. Haren tossed a two-hitter to lead Arizona to an 8-1 victory over Houston.

      HURTING ACES

Toronto right-hander Roy Halladay left his start against the Florida Marlins with a sore groin. Halladay, who leads the majors with 10 wins and 103 innings, has won seven straight decisions and entered having thrown back-to-back complete games, but left two pitches into the fourth. He tried one warmup pitch before heading to the dugout. ... San Diego right-hander Jake Peavy is expected to miss at least a month because of his injured ankle. He was scratched from Saturday's start against the Los Angeles Angels after an MRI revealed a torn tendon behind his right ankle.

      REJUVENATED

Milwaukee snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Chicago White Sox 7-2 Friday, one night after four starters sat out due to hitting slumps. The Brewers came in batting .195 with runners in scoring position in the previous 10. Corey Hart, one of the four starters benched, sparked a rally in the sixth after his diving catch of Chris Getz's liner ended the top half. Hart drove in three runs on a double and a triple.

      NO GULLS ALLOWED

A day after a gull may have helped decide a game in Cleveland, the Indians responded by setting off fireworks every half inning to keep the flocks at bay. Thursday night, Shin-Soo Choo's single in the 10th inning struck one, allowing the winning run to score without a throw in a victory against the Kansas City Royals. On Friday night, the seabirds were largely absent. A few flew around the ballpark's upper deck, but none landed on the field.

      SPEAKING

"We hear that everywhere because he's a rock star, a teen idol, the package,'' Twins manager Ron Gardenhire on catcher Joe Mauer, who was greeted with "M-V-P!'' chants in Minnesota's 7-4 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

"As soon as I slid in, I hugged Jete and I said, `What just happened?' because I couldn't believe it,'' - Mark Teixeira after scoring the winning run from first when Mets second baseman Luis Castillo dropped a popup with two outs in the ninth to give the Yankees a 9-8 win Friday night.

      SEASONS

      June 13

1905 - Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants pitched his second no-hit game, beating the Chicago Cubs and Mordecai Brown 1-0. Mathewson and Brown matched no-hitters for eight innings. The Giants got two hits in the ninth for the win.

1912 - Christy Mathewson recorded his 300th career victory with a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs.

1921 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees pitched the first five innings and hit two home runs in an 11-8 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1948 - Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium drew 49,641 fans who saw Ruth's No. 3 retired and the Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3.

1957 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hit three home runs and drove in five runs in a 9-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians as Williams became the first AL player to have two three-homer games in a season.

1973 - The Los Angeles Dodgers' infield of Steve Garvey (first base), Davey Lopes (second base), Ron Cey (third base) and Bill Russell (shortstop) played together for the first time in a 16-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The quartet would set a major league record for longevity by playing 8 1/2 years in the same infield.

2001 - Texas' Ruben Sierra homered from both sides of the plate for the sixth time in his career, but the Rangers lost 5-3 to the Dodgers.

2003 - Roger Clemens reached 300 wins and became the third pitcher with 4,000 strikeouts, leading the New York Yankees over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2. Clemens, the 21st pitcher to make it to 300, allowed two runs in 6 2-3 innings and struck out 10, raising his total to 4,006. Clemens joined Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) in the 4,000-strikeout club.

2008 - Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell hit consecutive home runs in the first inning of Philadelphia's 20-2 rout of St. Louis.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

            Josh Outman, Oakland A’s, (4-0, 3.17 ERA)

Outman has perhaps the best name for a pitcher in major league history and so far this season, he’s lived up to it. The lefty hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his seven starts and that has helped under bettors win in six of those outings.

He’ll get his first taste of the Bay Area rivalry this weekend when the A’s take on the Giants. Outman picked up a win in his only other interleague start this year, a 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Erik Bedard, Seattle Mariners, (5-2, 2.47 ERA)

Nothing inspires outstanding efforts like a contract year. Seattle Mariners lefty Erik Bedard is singing for his supper in recent starts, going 3-1 in his last six starts with an ERA of 2.33.

Bedard hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his 11 outings this year but has only gone past the sixth inning in six of those appearances. In his most recent start, he had trouble with his control and allowed four walks before leaving the game in the fifth.

However, he’s done a good job limiting the damage from those mistakes and is posting a strikeout-to-walk count of 65-to-22 on the season. This will be Bedard’s first-career start in Coors Field, which ranks first in the majors in runs and hits.

            Slumping

Anthony Swarzak, Minnesota Twins, (1-2, 5.23 ERA)

You can forgive Swarzak for slumping recently. He is a rookie after all. And like many big league rookies, you can have some success for a little while but once the opposition has had a chance to see a bit of what you’ve got, things can unravel.

He started the year with a pair of quality starts going 1-1. The Twins lost his last two starts though and Swarzak failed to make it past the fourth inning in either one. He also threw more than 80 pitches in each game.

It’s going to take this 24-year-old righty a little long to learn how to get outs in the bigs and until then, you might want to fade him.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Arizona Diamondbacks (+101, 9)

Roy Oswalt is struggling to find consistency and coming off one of his worst performances of the season. A start against the Arizona Diamondbacks could be just what he needs to get on track.

With their lineup struggling to produce runs, the Houston Astros hope their ace can continue his dominance of the Diamondbacks in the middle game of this series Saturday.

Oswalt (2-3, 4.66 ERA) battled through six innings last Saturday, giving up six runs and nine hits on 105 pitches in a 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh. That outing came five days after he yielded one run and six hits with a season-high eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 4-1 win over Colorado.

"I pitched myself into that trouble," Oswalt said of allowing three runs in both the second and third against the Pirates. "That was probably the most out of place I've ever felt on the mound during the second and third innings. I couldn't throw the ball anywhere I wanted to. I was scared to throw a breaking ball."

Oswalt then saw his next scheduled start pushed back due to a wrist problem, according to the Astros' official Web site.

The three-time All-Star will try to overcome that injury by continuing his dominance of the Diamondbacks (27-35). He's 7-1 with a 2.25 ERA in nine career starts against them.

Oswalt may not get much help from the Astros' lineup, though, after it was two-hit in Friday's 2-1 loss at Arizona in a matchup of last-place clubs.

Houston (27-32) has scored six runs and is batting .169 in splitting its last four games after hitting .312 to win seven of the previous 10.

                Pick: Under 9

Seattle Mariners at Colorado Rockies (-106, 9)

The Colorado Rockies haven't been this hot since their improbable late-season run to the playoffs two years ago.

Looking for a 10th straight victory Saturday night, the Rockies won't have to face the ace of the Seattle Mariners' staff in the continuation of this three-game interleague series at Coors Field.

Colorado (29-32) rallied from an early three-run deficit to win 6-4 in Friday's series opener. The Rockies are 11-4 since Jim Tracy replaced the fired Clint Hurdle as manager on May 29.

"I think you can say we're playing very good baseball and doing things that give us an opportunity to get back to .500," Tracy told the Rockies' official Web site. "These kids deserve to be talked about right now."

In the midst of their longest consecutive stretch without a loss since winning a franchise-record 11 in a row from Sept. 16-27, 2007, the Rockies could catch a break by not having to face Seattle's Erik Bedard (5-2, 2.47 ERA) in this contest.

The left-hander, who has won his last three starts, was scratched due to left shoulder inflammation. Bedard could pitch next Friday against Arizona at home.

"This is precautionary," manager Don Wakamatsu told the Mariners' official Web site. "He could probably pitch, but it's safer to push him back. To keep him healthy all year, we felt it's best to push him back one start."

Former closer Brandon Morrow (0-3, 6.38) will make his first start since Sept. 26 after appearing in 16 games out of the bullpen this season for the Mariners (30-31).

The right-hander, who is 2-2 with a 5.79 ERA in five career starts, could be limited to around 60 pitches. He has never faced Colorado.

                Pick: Colorado -106

Game of the day: Twins at Cubs
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Chicago Cubs (-162)

                  Setting the table

Interleague play strikes up again sending the Minnesota Twins south for a weekend within the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

For Minnesota, this is the second set of three games against the National League Central. The Twins swept the Milwaukee Brewers back in mid-May, outscoring the Brew Crew 23-8. For the Cubbies, this will be their first action against the American League this season.

After Minnesota leaves town, the Cubs will continue their nine-game interleague home stand, welcoming the cross-town rival White Sox followed by another AL Central foe in the Cleveland Indians.

                  Minnesota Masterpiece

Outside of the Milwaukee sweep at the Metrodome, the Twins are 4-1 in their last five interleague contests. Minnesota also swept the Cubs the last time these clubs met in June 2006. The Twins are 21-6 over the last 27 games played against the NL Central.

The Twins have just shown dominance across the National League and, despite a losing record, they still hold second place in their own division. When playing on the road against the NL, Minnesota's 20-8 over the last 28 games.

Pitching has played a big part in those victories, as the under was 4-1 over their last five against the NL Central. Oddly enough, right-hander Anthony Swarzak became the only Twins pitcher to toss seven scoreless innings in his major league debut for a 6-2 win over Milwaukee on May 23. It was Swarzak's only win to date.

In front of the second-largest crowd since opening day at the Metrodome, the 23-year-old starter calmed the Brewers’ bats while receiving help from Joe Mauer and Joe Crede. Since that first win, Swarzak has failed to last more than six innings and hasn’t held an opponent to under three earned runs in an outing. Minnesota is also 1-5 in its last six meetings in Chicago.

                  Cubbie Blues

The Cubs bullpen is struggling heading into the third month of the season. Whether it is closer Kevin Gregg, the inconsistency of Carlos Marmol or the recent collapse of Jose Ascanio, the Cubs pen has faulted on the mound.,

They’re almost as bad as the Cubs bats. During its recent eight-game road trip, Chicago finished 4-4 and is now hitting just .248 BA as a team. Adding insult to injury, the Cubs suffered back-to-back walk-off extra-inning defeats at the hands of the Houston Astros their past two games - both thanks to Geoff Blum.

With Swarzak slated to start for Minnesota, Chicago's 6-1 at Wrigley Field when facing a right-handed starter. Conversely, the Cubs are also 1-4 in their last five interleague games when facing a right-handed starter. Having not played an interleague contest this year heading into this series, the Cubs are 0-4 in their last four games against the American League.

With Rich Harden scheduled to make his first start since being put on the 15-day DL (May 18, back strain), more hope will fill the stands on the North Side. The Cubs are 5-1 in Harden's last six starts, as well as 8-2 in Harden's last 10 starts at Wrigley.

                  Three strikes

Strike 1: Under is 4-1 in Twins last five vs. National League Central.
Strike 2: Under is 5-1 in Cubs last six home games.
Strike 3: Over is 5-0 in Cubs last five interleague games vs. a right-handed starter.

Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox: The Red Sox have been outstanding during interleague winning 53 of their past 71 (74 percent) matchups. They have captured 16 of their last 21 interleague games versus a team with a winning record. They’ll try to add to that impressive record with right-handed Daisuke Matsuzaka, who has not looked good since coming off the DL on May 22 following a shoulder injury. Dice-K has allowed 13 runs in 20 2/3 innings and failed to complete six innings in all four of his starts since returning. Boston is 1-5 in Matsuzaka’s starts this season. Dice-K struck out eight and didn’t issue a walk in his last start on Sunday. However, he allowed five runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in that 6-3 home loss to Texas. Boston has won 16 of the past 21 times Matsuzaka has pitched away from Fenway Park. This is his first start versus Philadelphia.

Boston is 45-22 in their last 67 games against a left-hander.

Key Injuries - Jed Lowrie (wrist) is on the DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phillies (-$1.15, O/U 9.5 over $1.20): The Phillies have won six of their last seven games when facing a right-hander starter. Philadelphia, though, has lost eight of its past 10 home games to Boston. Rookie left-hander Antonio Bastardo makes his third big-league start since replacing injured Brett Myers in the starting rotation. Bastardo is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in his first two starts. Those outings came in Petco Park in San Diego and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, two very friendly pitcher parks. This is his first challenge in a hitter’s park against a power club. The Red Sox rank in the top five in runs scored and home runs. Bastardo has a nine-to-two strikeout-to-walk ratio and has given up one homer in his 11 innings pitched. Boston is 15-7 when facing a southpaw starter. The Phillies have by far the best road record in baseball, but are a miserable 12-15 when playing at home.

The Phillies are 15-6 in their last 21 games on Saturday.
The Under is 13-5-1 in the Phillies’ last 19 games.

Key Injuries - Brad Lidge (knee) is on the DL

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Detroit Tigers at Pittsburgh Pirates [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers: Armando Galarraga is battling a sophomore slump. After a strong rookie season, Galarraga opened this year going 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in his first four starts. Since then, he’s gone 0-6 with a 7.06 ERA in eight outings. Detroit is 0-7 the past seven times Galarraga has been a road underdog. This is his first starts against Pittsburgh. Galarraga is 3-1 with a 3.10 ERA lifetime in interleague competition. Detroit has won 81 percent of its past 34 interleague games when facing a team under .500 going 28-6. Detroit is 45-17 overall in its last 62 interleague matchups. The Tigers have won six of their last eight games. However, they came into this series batting just .217 during their last 13 games. Their 11 hits against the Pirates on Friday were the most they had in their last 13 contests. Miguel Cabrera is 5-for-9 with four doubles against Zach Duke.

The Tigers are 18-6 in their last 24 interleague games when facing a left-handed starter.
The Under has cashed in 19 of Detroit’s past 26 games.

Key Injuries - Carlos Guillen (shoulder) is on the DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Pirates (-$1.12, O/U 9 under $1.20): While Detroit has been highly successful in interleague competition, the Pirates are just 16-39 (29 percent) in their last 55 interleague matchups. Pittsburgh has scored five runs in four interleague games this season. Zach Duke is having a nice comeback season, but he was rocked in his last start on Monday against Atlanta. Duke surrendered six runs and 11 hits in six innings of what turned out to be a 7-6 15-inning loss to the Braves. Duke allowed three homers in that game, after giving up just four during his first 11 starts. This is the left-hander’s first start ever against the Tigers. Duke is 1-3 with a 3.83 ERA in nine interleague starts. Pittsburgh is 2-11 in Duke’s past 13 starts when he’s had four days of rest. The Tigers have a losing mark versus right-handers this season, but are 14-5 when facing a southpaw starter.

The Under has cashed 8 of 11 times during Duke’s past 11 starts as a favorite.
Pittsburgh is 9-3 in its last 12 home games versus a team with a winning road mark.

Key Injuries - Catcher Ryan Doumit (wrist) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)
