    Len’s Top Five

    Wednesday, June 10

    Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 10, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

    1. Quick Hits

The Magic beat the Lakers 108-104 and now trail the NBA Finals 2 games to 1. Game 4 is tomorrow night in Orlando.

Pittsburgh beat Detroit 2-1 to force a 7th game in the Stanley Cup finals Friday night in Detroit.

The Red Sox dumped the Yankees 7-0. They are 6 and 0 against the Yanks this season. The two teams are tied for first place.

The Washington Nationals chose San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg with the #1 pick in the baseball draft. Washington hasn't had an ace pitcher since Walter Johnson retired in 1927.

Mike Tyson marries girlfriend Lakiha Spicer. It's his third bout with marriage.

    2. Another Strikeout

We don't like to cover the play by play of marital strife, but it bears noting that Barry Bonds' wife has filed for a separation. They have a 10-year old daughter, Aisha. Aisha was the most endearing part of Bonds' persona. He would drag her to news conferences after big home runs so the focus would be on her "cuteness" instead of his "cheating." Bonds wasn't the first to use this ploy, but it's always the kids who suffer from divorce. More so, in the public eye.

    3. Going for the Gold

The USA wrestling team was a big disappointment in Beijing, so what to do? Throw money at the problem. $250-thousand for a gold medal. That's the American way. Through a quirk of fate I was the announcer who interviewed Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner after the biggest wrestling upset of all time at the Sydney games. A big farm boy who somehow beat an undefeated Russian. What a story that would have been sullied by "Hey Rulon, you just won $250-thousand, whatcha gonna do now?"

    4. Happy Birthday Jackie

Yesterday was comedian Jackie Mason's birthday. I had him at 73, but others have him at 78 or more. Anyway, I ran into Jackie at Mickey Mantle's restaurant during the baseball strike of '94. You'd think being an employee his whole life he'd side with the players. But he was squarely on the owners side. Players in all the major sports get over 50 per cent of the revenue. Jackie said, "name me one other business where the workers make more than the bosses?" And he wasn't joking. Jackie for commissioner!

    5. Me, Myself, and I

The tiny town of Rochelle Texas won the state high school track title for the second straight year. Rochelle High School beat 56 other schools for the team title. Pretty amazing when you consider that Rochelle doesn't have a track. One other small detail. The entire team is composed of Bonnie Richardson. Just one girl. That's all they need. Bonnie won the long jump and high jump, finished second in the discus, and third in the 200 meters. I'm guessing team meetings don't take long.

Today's Birthday: Former Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts. 58.
Bonus Birthdays: A couple of randy guys. John Edwards. 56. Elliot Spitzer. 50.

Today in Sports: Reds Pitcher Joe Nuxhall becomes the youngest pitcher in major league history to appear in a game at the age of 15. 1944.
Bonus Event: The great Sammy Davis, Jr. finally has a # 1 hit. "The Candy Man." 1972.
