Daily Sports Roundup: June 8
Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Diamondbacks take on the Padres, the Yankees meet the Rays, and the Tigers and ChiSox hook up in a doubleheader.
Meeting up on the diamond . . .
There are just four games on tap in the National League on Monday, with Colorado at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, San Francisco at Florida, and Arizona at San Diego. The Diamondbacks will go with Jon Garland (4-5, 5.34 ERA) in their west-coast contest; the righthander has lost three straight starts, but tossed seven shutout innings against San Diego back on May 6. The Padres will counter with Jake Peavy (5-6, 4.10 ERA), who was pushed back a day as he recovered from a respiratory infection. Peavy pitched his team to a win over the Diamondbacks on May 27 despite allowing four earned runs over 6 1-3 innings.
There are more games over on the American League side of things on Monday, including a doubleheader between the Tigers and White Sox in Chicago. Game 1 of that twinbill is expected to be a matchup between Detroit's Armando Galarraga (3-6, 5.31 ERA) and Chicago's Clayton Richard (2-1, 3.97 ERA). The nightcap will then have Chicago's Jose Contreras (0-5, 8.19 ERA) taking on Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Righthander Bonderman will be making his 2009 debut; he's been out for a year recovering from shoulder and rib surgeries.
Elsewhere on the Junior Circuit's Monday slate: Toronto at Texas, Minnesota at Oakland, and Tampa Bay at the Yankees. Andy Sonnanstine (4-5, 7.07 ERA) will get the ball for the Rays, and he's won three of his last four outings. The righthander has faced the Yankees twice this season, picking up two no-decisions (four earned runs in 12 1-3 innings). New York will turn to Andy Pettitte (5-2, 4.33 ERA) in the series finale. The lefthander has two no-decisions against the Rays so far this season, surrendering eight earned runs over 13 1-3 innings.
Rounding out the Roundup . . .
Finally, there's just one game on the WNBA's schedule for Monday, with Los Angeles at Detroit. The Shock and Sparks met out in California on Saturday, with Los Angeles rolling to a 78-58 home victory. Tina Thompson had a game-high 18 points for the Sparks, who are playing without Candace Parker (maternity leave). Suspended Shock center Kara Braxton won't be back in the lineup until June 28.

Hot Lines: Monday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (-154, 11)
New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte earned a victory in the final game at the old Yankee Stadium, but he hasn't seemed at ease in the team's new home lately.
Pettitte will try to get more comfortable Monday night and help the Yankees win their rain-shortened, three-game series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.
Pettitte is 15-4 with a 3.85 ERA in 26 career starts against the Rays but is 2-3 with a 4.95 ERA in the last seven matchups. In an 8-6 home loss May 7 to Tampa Bay, he gave up five runs - on four homers - in six innings but did not factor in the decision.
With some help from the visiting team on Sunday, the Yankees (33-23) kept the Rays from making themselves too comfortable at their new stadium by rallying for a 4-3 win - their major league-leading 20th comeback victory this season.
Tampa Bay's scheduled starter, Andy Sonnanstine (4-5, 7.07), kept the ball inside the park in New York on May 6. The Yankees failed to go deep against Sonnanstine in a 4-3 loss in 10 innings - their only home game without a homer this season.
The right-hander, 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in six career starts against New York, allowed two runs over 7 1-3 innings in that game and also yielded two runs to the Yankees over five innings April 15 in Tampa Bay. He didn't factor in the decision in either start.
Pick: Rays
Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves (-145, 8)
The Pittsburgh Pirates weren't happy after finding out Nate McLouth was traded to the Atlanta Braves, and they've spent the past few days voicing their frustration.
They won't have to wait long to get reacquainted.
Just five days after the Pirates' surprising decision to trade their All-Star outfielder, Pittsburgh will visit Turner Field on Monday night to open a four-game series against McLouth and the Braves.
With 16 consecutive losing seasons, the Pirates (26-30) have long been sellers at baseball's July trade deadline. Making a major move in early June, however, is unusual, particularly with a 27-year-old center fielder who signed a three-year, $15.75 million contract extension in February on the heels of an All-Star season.
But that's what Pittsburgh did Wednesday, dealing its leader in homers and RBIs to Atlanta (27-28) for three minor league prospects, a seemingly glaring sign the club is committed to completely rebuilding.
"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't," second baseman Freddy Sanchez told the Pirates' official Web site. "We're four games under .500 and playing OK. I think if we could have gotten a little more offensive output from us then I think we could be right in the thick of things. It's definitely tough to look at it not as rebuilding."
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington wrote an open letter to the team's fans saying the move was not made just to save money.
"I understand why some people, at first glance, may believe this move was financially motivated," Huntington wrote. "In fact, our owner, Bob Nutting, was as surprised as some of our fans when we sought his approval for this trade.
"The decision to trade Nate was perhaps the most difficult one personally and professionally that we have made to date."
McLouth is 2 for 10 in his first three games with the Braves, but his second hit in his new uniform was a big one. He hit a tying double in the eighth inning Sunday against Milwaukee and scored on Yunel Escobar's single in Atlanta's 8-7 victory, ensuring Chipper Jones' four hits - including two homers - and five RBIs wouldn't be wasted.
Jones might be happy to see Zach Duke (6-4, 2.62 ERA) on the mound Monday. The switch hitter is batting .474 (9 for 19) in his career against Duke.
Duke, 2-3 with a 3.72 ERA in six starts against Atlanta, had his worst outing versus the Braves on April 19. He gave up six runs and 12 hits over six innings in an 11-1 loss in Pittsburgh.
Lately, however, Duke has been outstanding. The left-hander is 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last five starts, and he gave up a run over seven innings Tuesday in a 3-1 win over the Mets, outdueling Johan Santana.
One reason McLouth was deemed expendable was the emergence of top prospect Andrew McCutchen, who's taken over in center field. McCutchen had three hits Sunday but Pittsburgh lost 6-4 to Houston.
He and the rest of the Pirates will get their first look at Atlanta's Kenshin Kawakami (3-6, 4.63). The right-hander gave up four runs - three earned - over seven innings Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs as the Braves won 6-5 in 12 innings.
Kawakami has not given up more three earned runs in six straight starts.
Pick: Atlanta

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking
Randy Johnson, San Francisco Giants
After achieving his latest milestone, Randy Johnson is poised to continue his most successful stretch of the season for the San Francisco Giants.
Pitching on three days' rest, the veteran tries for his third straight victory while looking to continue his dominance of the host Florida Marlins in the conclusion of a four-game set Monday night.
Johnson (5-4, 5.12 ERA), who turns 46 in September, became the 24th pitcher to record 300 victories after allowing an unearned run and two hits in six innings of a 5-1 victory over Washington in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
Two months into his 22nd season, Johnson become the first pitcher to get 300 on his first try since Tom Seaver in 1985. He's the sixth left-hander to reach the milestone and the second-oldest pitcher to do it.
"It's a long-range achievement," Johnson said. "It's not a one-game or a one-year achievement, it's a career achievement. I'm going to think about this for a long time.
"I get more gratification out of that because of the way I'm doing it now than the way I did it 10 years ago."
No longer as overpowering as he once was, Johnson is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA with 14 strikeouts over his last three starts. Despite bruising his shoulder Thursday, Johnson volunteered to make this start rather than force the club to call up a pitcher from the minors for one outing.
Slumping
Armando Galarraga, Detroit Tigers
Detroit, which is coming off Sunday's 9-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels, will give the ball to Armando Galarraga (3-6, 5.31) as he tries to win for the first time in eight starts.
The right-hander is 0-6 with a 7.61 ERA in his last seven outings, including a defeat at Chicago on May 7 when he allowed six runs and six hits in six innings of a 6-0 loss. That rough stretch comes after he went 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in his first four games of 2009.
Galarraga lost again Wednesday, allowing four runs in seven innings of a 10-5 loss to Boston.
Returning
Jeremy Bonderman, Detroit Tigers
The Tigers hope to get a lift in the second game with the return of Jeremy Bonderman, who is expected to be activated from the disabled list after being sidelined since June 1, 2008, following the discovery of a blood clot in his pitching shoulder.
The right-hander went 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 12 starts last year prior to undergoing surgery.
Bonderman was solid in four minor league rehab starts, going 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and using his changeup more often."It's going to be a different style of game than what I'm used to," Bonderman told the Tigers' official Web site.
Bonderman has lost his last three starts against Chicago, posting a 6.52 ERA.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]
Rays: Andy Sonnanstine was in danger of losing his spot in Tampa Bay’s starting pitching rotation and possibly being sent to the minors, but he responded well in his last start. He held Kansas City to two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings in a victory on Tuesday. Sonnanstine didn’t walk a batter, while inducing 11 groundball outs. Keeping the ball on the ground is a key at the new Yankee Stadium where the Yankees have homered in 16 consecutive games. The last time the Yankees failed to go deep at home was against Sonnanstine on May 6 during a 4-3 loss in 10 innings. It’s the only time the Yankees have not homered at home this season. Sonnanstine is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in six career starts versus New York. Evan Longoria pinch-hit on Sunday. He had been out since leaving Tuesday’s game with a sore hamstring.
The Rays are 8-3 the past 11 times they’ve been an underdog.
The Over has cashed in 8 of Tampa Bay’s past 10 road games.
Key Injuries - Evan Longoria is day-to-day with a hamstring.
Jason Bartlett (ankle) is on the DL.
Akinori Iwamura (knee) is on the DL.
PROJECTED SCORE: 5
Yankees (-$1.55, O/U 11): The Yankees are convincing people they could be the best team in baseball winning 17 of their last 23 games. New York is 20-8 since Alex Rodriguez returned on May 8. The Yankees are 75-34 (68 percent) in Andy Pettitte’s last 109 home starts. New York is 15-6 in Pettitte’s past 21 starts versus Tampa Bay. The 15-year veteran, though, hasn’t been sharp in his last five home starts with a 6.53 ERA. The lefty has allowed at least four runs in each of those games. Pettitte has a 5.79 ERA in six home starts on the season. He is 15-4 with a 3.85 ERA in 26 career starts against the Rays, but is 2-3 with a 4.95 ERA during the last seven times he’s faced Tampa Bay. This season, Pettitte has two non-decisions against Tampa Bay. The Rays have gotten to Pettitte for eight runs in 13 1/3 innings.
The Under is 19-9-1 in Pettitte’s last 29 home starts.
The Over has cashed 9 of the past 12 times these two teams have met.
Key Injuries - Relief pitchers Brian Bruney (elbow) and Damaso Marte (shoulder) are on the DL.
PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)
San Francisco Giants at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]
Giants: Randy Johnson nailed down his 300th victory in his last start. Now he’s going for No. 301 on just three days rest after throwing 78 pitches in six innings during his historic 5-1 victory at Washington on Thursday. Johnson bruised his non-throwing shoulder in the win, but says he is fine to go. Both Johnson and the Giants are hot. Johnson is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 14 strikeouts during his past three starts. San Francisco is 9-3 in its last 12 games, including 4-1 in its past five contests. Johnson has a strong history against the Marlins with an 8-1 mark and 1.78 ERA in 13 starts. The Giants are 8-3 in their last 11 road games against Florida. Outfielder Aaron Rowand has a 17-game hitting streak, longest active streak in the majors. Rowand is batting .411 during this period. He is a career .363 hitter versus Florida.
The Under is 8-1-1 in the Giants’ last 10 games as a road underdog.
The Under is 15-3-2 in San Francisco’s past 20 road games against a left-handed starter.
Key Injuries - None.
PROJECTED SCORE: 4
Marlins (-$1.25, O/U 8.5): The Marlins have shown resiliency going 6-0 in their last six games following a loss. They’ll try to bounce back from Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Tim Lincecum with rookie southpaw Sean West. This will be his fourth big-league start. West is striving to improve his command and pitch more consistently. But he’s considered a big-time talent. The oddsmakers think enough of him to make him a favorite. Florida has won five of the past six times it has been chalk. West has a 3.31 ERA and 1.22 ratio through three outings, but is looking to get his first win. The Brewers roughed him up in his last start on Wednesday. West couldn’t get out of the fifth inning, surrendering four runs in a 9-6 loss. He struck out two and walked three. The Marlins may be without team RBI leader, first baseman Jorge Cantu. He’s been bothered recently by dizziness.
The Under is 7-0-1 during the past eight games Fieldin Culbreth has been the home plate umpire.
Key Injuries - Jorge Cantu is day-to-day with dizziness.

MILESTONE MAN
Bobby Abreu doubled for his 2,000th hit in the Los Angeles Angels' 9-6 loss at Detroit.
MARATHON MEN
Arizona's 9-6 victory over San Diego lasted 5 hours, 45 minutes. The Padres were held hitless through nine extra innings by four relievers. Their only baserunners in extras came on three walks. It was the longest big league game by time and innings since San Diego beat visiting Cincinnati 12-9 in an 18-inning game that took 5 hours, 57 minutes on May 25, 2008, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Padres have played the two longest games in the majors this year. They beat the Reds 6-5 in a 16-inning game May 16 that lasted 5 hours, 14 minutes.
DEAR ABBEY
Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington wrote an open letter to fans on the team's Web site explaining the decision to trade All-Star center fielder Nate McLouth to Atlanta for three prospects wasn't financially motivated. The Pirates, who traditionally have one of the majors' lowest payrolls, are averaging a major league-low 16,588 in attendance.
BEANTOWN BOOGIE
Texas took two of three from the Red Sox to win a series in Boston for the first time in 12 years. The Rangers hadn't won a series at Fenway Park since a three-game sweep in August 1997. They were 0-12-3 in their last 15 series at Boston and 1-9 in their last 10 road games against the Red Sox before Sunday's win.
NATIONALS NEMESIS
Livan Hernandez allowed four singles in seven innings and the New York Mets scored five runs in the first to beat Washington 7-0. Hernandez (5-1) walked four and struck out four to win for the fifth time in seven starts. The right-hander has won seven consecutive games against the Nationals and improved to 10-5 lifetime against his former team. Washington lost for the 10th time in 12 games and dropped to 2-7 against the Mets this season.
TOUCH 'EM ALL
Clete Thomas' grand slam broke an eighth-inning tie and Detroit beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-6. ... Indians rookies Chris Gimenez and Luis Valbuena hit consecutive homers off former Cleveland ace Bartolo Colon in an 8-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Victor Martinez and Shin-Soo Choo also hit back-to-back homers off Colon, helping Cleveland win a road series for only the second time this season.
LAUNCHING PAD
Nick Swisher hit the 100th home run at the new Yankee Stadium, helping Joe Girardi earn his 200th win as a manager in New York's 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay. There has been at least one homer in all 28 games at the stadium, extending the record for a major league ballpark. Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico opened with long balls in 22 straight games. There were 160 homers last season at the old Yankee Stadium.
QUICK STATS
Oakland has three shutouts this season - all in the last six games. ... Texas slugger Nelson Cruz hit his 17th homer, and 10th in his last 17 games, to tie Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena and New York's Mark Teixeira for the AL lead. ... The White Sox are 2 for 39 with runners in scoring position over their last six games. ... The Yankees have a major league-high 20 comeback wins. ... Philadelphia beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2, handing ex-Phillies pitcher Randy Wolf his first loss in 12 starts since April 7, his season debut. ... The Rockies have scored 38 runs during their first four-game winning streak of the year and are 6-4 under manager Jim Tracy after going 18-28 under Clint Hurdle.
SPEAKING
"Day in and day out, everybody that gets on first base says he's the best. The Yankees, the Red Sox, they're like, 'It's not fair.' I'm glad I'm on his side, not the other side.'' - Toronto first baseman Lyle Overbay on teammate Roy Halladay (10-1), who pitched a seven-hitter in a 4-0 victory over Kansas City to become the first 10-game winner in the majors.

This Day in Baseball

On June 8 in Baseball History...
1920 - The Reds' Edd Roush falls asleep in center field during a long argument in the infield. Heinie Groh goes out to wake him, but the ump ejects Roush for delaying the game.
1921 - Babe Ruth is arrested for speeding in New York, fined $100, and held in jail until 4:00 PM. Game time is 3:15, so a uniform is taken to him. He changes in jail and follows a police escort to the ballpark where he enters with New York trailing 3-2. The Yanks rally for a 4-3 win.
1933 - Jimmie Foxx homers in his first three at-bats as the A's outscore the Yankees 14-10. He had homered his last time up the previous day to give him four consecutive home runs.
1935 - Lou Gehrig collides with Carl Reynolds on a play at first base and leaves the game with arm and shoulder injuries. His consecutive streak is preserved, in part, by a rainout of the next day's game and an open date.
1955 - The Dodgers option pitcher Tommy Lasorda to Montreal to make room on the roster for bonus baby Sandy Koufax, who has been on the injured list.
1961 - Milwaukee sets a major-league record with four consecutive home runs in the seventh inning against the Reds. Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron hit back-to-back home runs off Jim Maloney. Joe Adcock greets reliever Marshall Bridges with another home run, and Frank Thomas sets the record. When these four teammates end their major-league careers, they will have hit a combined total of 1,889 homers. For all the bombardment, the Braves lose 10-8.
1965 - Arizona star sophomore Rick Monday, selected by the Athletics, is the first player chosen in the initial major league free-agent draft of high school, college, and sandlot players. Picking second, the Mets take pitcher Les Rohr. In the tenth round, they finally take Nolan Ryan. Cincinnati picks Johnny Bench in the second round.
1968 - Don Drysdale works four scoreless innings against Philadelphia before finally allowing a run, after 58 2/3 shutout innings, on Howie Bedell's sacrifice fly. Bedell has no other RBI in 1968. Drysdale breaks the major league record of 56 consecutive scoreless innings set by Walter Johnson in 1913. The Dodgers win 5-3.
1969 - Mickey Mantle Day in New York. With 60,096 fans on hand, Mantle's number 7 is retired and plaques he exchanges with Joe DiMaggio will hang on the center field wall at Yankee Stadium. DiMaggio's plaque comes as a surprise to the Yankee Clipper. The Yankees then sweep the White Sox 3-1 and 11-2.
1970 - Players and management end their labor dispute by agreeing to a new standard player contract. Among the players' victories is a raise in the minimum salary from $10,000 to $12,000 per year.
1971 - Danny Goodwin is chosen as the first player in the June draft and turns down a reported $50,000 offer from the White Sox to attend Southern University. He will be chosen number one again in 1975. The Padres select pitcher Jay Franklin with the second pick. Future M.V.P. Keith Hernandez lasts until the 42nd round.
1972 - Shortstops are the first two picks in the June draft. The Padres make Dave Roberts the number-one selection and the Indians pick Rick Manning number two.
1976 - The Houston Astros, picking first in the baseball draft, select Arizona State pitcher Floyd Bannister. Bannister is one of 12 eventual major leaguers from the ASU team, which finished third in the College World Series. The Tigers take pitcher Pat Underwood with the second pick. Outfielder Rickey Henderson lasts until the fourth round.
1977 - Nolan Ryan notches his fourth career 19-strikeout game, hurling the first 10 innings of a game against Toronto.
1978 - Bob Horner, the College Player of the Year, is selected first in the free-agent draft by the Braves. The Blue Jays make Lloyd Moseby the second selection.
1979 - The Mariners make Al Chambers the number-one pick in the free-agent draft. The Mets take UCLA pitcher Tim Leary with the second pick. The Blue Jays, picking third, take high-school catcher Jay Schroeder, who will play football for UCLA and in the NFL but will never catch in the majors.
1981 - The Seattle Mariners take Oral Roberts University righthander Mike Moore with the first pick overall in the annual amateur draft. The Cubs take Wichita State's Joe Carter with the second pick. The Yankees use their first-round pick to take Stanford quarterback John Elway.
1989 - After taking a 10-0 lead in the top of the first inning (Pittsburgh's best inning since 1942), the Pirates lose to the Phillies 15-11. Lady Luck: Monday's WNBA best bet
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Sparks at Detroit Shock (Pick, 144)
The Detroit Shock are the WNBA's reigning champions, but a loaded Los Angeles Sparks club figures to be perhaps their greatest threat to defending their title.
One game in, it's hard to imagine the Shock threatening the Sparks.
Los Angeles looked dominant in its blowout of Detroit in the league's season opener, but the Shock will get a chance to redeem themselves Monday night when the teams complete a home-and home set at The Palace.
Detroit claimed its third championship last season with a three-game sweep of San Antonio, but it was the team that the Silver Stars beat in the Western Conference finals that had the busiest offseason.
The Sparks added stars Tina Thompson and Betty Lennox via free agency to a team that already boasted 2008 MVP Candace Parker and three-time MVP Lisa Leslie.
Parker is out until July after giving birth last month and Leslie had just six points as Los Angeles hosted Detroit on Saturday in each team's season opener, but the Sparks' new additions shined. Thompson had 18 points while Lennox added 17 points and 10 rebounds as Los Angeles blew out the Shock 78-58.
"It's great," Leslie said. "We have a lot of weapons and I think it's going to be like an orchestra - any given night anybody's going to have a solo and Tina and Betty have played well all training camp. ... I just hope to join them."
Though the final margin wasn't close, the game wasn't without some intrigue. Detroit's Plenette Pierson got tangled up with Thompson in the second quarter and it appeared Thompson threw the Shock guard down. Pierson left clutching her already injured right shoulder and coach Bill Laimbeer wasn't happy.
"You can't intentionally pull them over your back and injure them, that's not good," Laimbeer said. "They targeted Plenette today and that's unfortunate. Tina did it on purpose. She had her and she took advantage of her."
Pierson was also at the center of a memorable altercation with Los Angeles the last time the Shock and Sparks met at The Palace. On July 21, she got tangled with Parker underneath the basket and a fight ensued. Pierson, Detroit assistant Rick Mahorn and nine others were suspended for their roles in the altercation.
Shock forward Cheryl Ford tore her ACL while trying to restrain a teammate in the Sparks' 84-81 win and hasn't played since. She's expected to miss Monday's game before likely making her return.
In addition to the absences of Ford and Pierson, the short-handed Shock are also dealing with the six-game suspension of forward Kara Braxton, who pleaded guilty to drunken driving charges.
That means Detroit will need even more production from stars Katie Smith and Deanna Nolan, who combined to shoot 9 for 27 in the opener. The Shock shot a woeful 30.6 percent (19 for 62) overall.
"It's alright. We'll make more," said center Taj McWilliams, who had 12 points. "It's our first game and now we have a basis and we can go from here."
Pick: Detroit

Len’s Top Five
Happy Monday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 8, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.
1. Quick Hits
The Lakers beat Orlando again last night 101-96 in overtime to lead the NBA Finals 2 games to 0. Game 3 is tomorrow night in Orlando.
Roger Federer wins the French Open for the first time, his 14th major title tying Pete Sampras' record. (Sampras never won the French.)
Tiger Woods birdies the last two holes with tremendous approach shots to win The Memorial by one stroke. The U.S. Open is in two weeks at Bethpage.
2. Nothing but the Truth
How refreshing. The trainer for Mine That Bird didn't like the way his jockey ran the race in the Belmont. Carlos Beltran says the Mets should feel embarrassed losing to Pittsburgh. Adam LaRoche of the Pirates calls Beltran classless. Mariano Rivera publicly questions his manager for having Rivera issue an intentional walk.
Suddenly, sports is hit by a spate of honesty. Keep it coming boys.
3. Shuffle Off
If I told you some of the most exciting nights of basketball in front of packed houses were played in Buffalo, you'd laugh. But in the 70's I called some Celtics/Braves games at "The Aud" that were scintillating. The joint was jumpin'. Havlicek, Cowens and the rest of the Celtics against Ernie DiGregorio, Bob McAdoo and the Buffalo Braves (who no long exist). Randy Smith played on that Buffalo team. He died over the weekend at the age of 60. His passing recalls some long forgotten nights and the good fans of Buffalo who got ripped off by lousy ownership.
4. Meet and Greet
Wow, the mighty Yankees have gotten the message. You sorta have to be nice to your fans as you sit on your throne in the castle. The other night Joe Girardi, Brian Cashman and reliever Brian Bruney greeted fans before the game. And they didn't even make the riff raff kiss their rings. Oh wait, they haven't won any in years.
5. Lotsa Support
The story that just won't die. A former volleyball star is urging Romanian teenager Simona Halep not to undergo breast reduction surgery to help her tennis. According to the British tabloid The Sun, Alena Schurkova told Simona ""Don't do it. You can be a champion with big boobs."
Words to live by.
Today's Birthdays: Tennis stars Lindsay Davenport. 33. Kim Clijsters. 26.
Bonus Birthdays: A couple of musical peas in a pod. Nancy "These Boots Are Made for Walking" Sinatra. 69. Rapper Kanye West. 32.
Today in Sports: Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium. The Mick's # 7 is retired. 1969.
Bonus Event: Tommy Lasorda is sent down by the Brooklyn Dodgers to make room for some pitcher by the name of Sandy Koufax. 1955.
