Kansas City Royals at Toronto Blue Jays (-171. 9.5)

Considering Kansas City's ace suffered his worst outing of the season in the series opener against the Blue Jays, the Royals could have trouble ending their eight-game losing streak in their remaining contests in Toronto.

Before facing the Blue Jays' top pitcher in the series finale, the Royals are expected to recall Luke Hochevar, who didn't have much success in his first stint of the season with Kansas City, to start Saturday at Rogers Centre.

On Friday, the Royals' Zack Greinke tried to join the Blue Jays' Roy Halladay, Sunday's scheduled starter, as the only nine-game winners in the majors. Instead, Greinke was tagged for a season-high seven runs - five earned - and nine hits in five innings of a 9-3 loss. His major league-leading ERA rose from 1.10 to 1.55.

"I don't think you can expect a pitcher to go out and give you eight innings of shutout baseball," designated hitter Mike Jacobs told Kansas City's official Web site. "(Greinke's) been doing more than what he needs to be doing for this team."

The Royals (23-31) have lost eight straight and are just 5-21 since May 8. They had a three-game lead atop the AL Central on May 7, but have since dropped 5 1/2 games back of the first-place Tigers.

The Royals had only five hits Friday, and are batting .192 while being outscored 58-19 in their last eight.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres (+120, 7.5)

Chris Young's success at the plate has usually led to Arizona Diamondbacks wins.

Problem is, he hasn't had much luck at the plate this season.

Young, though, looks to build off his best game in weeks and help the Diamondbacks string together consecutive victories Saturday night when they continue a four-game series versus the slumping San Diego Padres.

After hitting a career-high 32 home runs in 2007 when Arizona won the NL West title, Young had 22 last season. Home runs have been more scarce this season for Young, but the center fielder could be breaking out of his slump.

In Friday's 8-0 win at Petco Park, Young finished with two walks and two hits - including his fourth homer - for his first multihit game since May 22. He was just 8 for 60 (.133) with a homer and four RBIs in his previous 20 games.

"(Friday) I did feel comfortable," Young told Arizona's official Web site. "It's the first game in a while that I've felt comfortable at the plate. I've got to take it a day at a time. I've just got to keep that going."

The Diamondbacks have lost seven of 12 and are 13 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers, but they're tough to beat when Young is hitting well. Arizona is 5-1 when Young has at least two hits in a game and 3-1 when he homers.

Young will try to carry some momentum into Saturday's game versus Kevin Correia (1-4, 5.37 ERA), against whom he's 4 for 15 with three home runs in his career. On Monday, Correia yielded four runs and a season-high 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings of a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia.

Max Scherzer (2-4, 4.47) takes the ball for Arizona looking to bounce back from the worst outing of his career. He was pounded for career highs of eight runs and 10 hits in a career-worst 3 2-3 innings of a 9-3 loss to Atlanta on Sunday.

Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox [4:10 PM ET]

Indians: The White Sox have lost four in a row, including being shut out in three of their last four games, but the Indians haven’t had much recent success against Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field. Cleveland is 3-8 there in its last 11 games. The Indians are going to try to take advantage of the White Sox’s scoring slump by trying to get away with pitching Jeremy Sowers, who has a 6.16 ERA. Sowers has allowed just one run on six hits in nine innings since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus on May 23. Sowers has walked six and struck out four during this span. Sowers was sent down to the minors last month following two disastrous starts against the White Sox and Red Sox when he allowed 12 runs in nine innings versus those two teams. The Indians are 3-14 the past 17 times Sowers has been a road underdog.

The Over has cashed in 19 of the past 26 times the Indians have been on the road.

The White Sox could be forced to play small ball in this matchup because they are missing injured slugger Carlos Quentin and once again are without suspended outfielder Jermaine Dye. He’s sitting out the second of a two-game league suspension. Gavin Floyd has come on to make three straight quality starts after a slow beginning. He’s lowered his ERA the past three weeks from 7.71 on May 17 down to 5.75. Floyd yielded two runs on four hits in seven innings on Monday in a 6-2 victory over the A’s. Floyd is 2-2 lifetime versus Cleveland with a 6.56 ERA. The White Sox have won 18 of Floyd’s last 24 starts at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Over is 13-5-1 in Floyd’s last 19 home starts.

New York Mets at Washington Nationals [7:05 PM ET]

Mets (-$1.35, O/U 8.5 over -$1.15): Mets pitchers have dominated the Nationals this season winning six of seven with a team ERA of 2.81. While the Nationals continue to have serious bullpen problems, New York closer Francisco Rodriguez is 15-for-15 in save opportunities while allowing just two runs and striking out 28 in 25 2/3 innings. The Mets have defeated the Nationals in 25 of the last 32 games in Washington. Mets starter John Maine has defeated the Nationals four straight times, holding their hitters to a .143 average during this span and compiling a 1.52 ERA. Maine, though, has never pitched at Nationals Park. Maine has been in good form yielding three earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. He has given up only one run on seven hits in his last 12 innings. The Mets do have several key injuries, missing injured shortstop Jose Reyes and first baseman Carlos Delgado.

New York is 27-7 in Maine’s past 34 starts versus National League East Division teams.

Outfielder Austin Kearns is in a real slump batting .167 in his last 54 at bats and not driving in a run in his last 19 games. Southpaw John Lannan tries to end Washington’s slump. The Nationals are 7-26 in Lannan’s last 33 starts. Lannan has a 7.20 ERA in losing his last two starts. He has walked eight batters in the last 10 innings. During his past nine outings, though, Lannan has turned in five quality starts with a 3.23 ERA. He can expect little help from a bullpen that has a 5.74 ERA and lacks a true closer.

The Nationals are 12-39 in their last 51 games against National League East Division competition and 3-16 in Lannan’s past 19 starts versus NL East clubs.

TONY LA TWITTER

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and Twitter have reached a settlement in his lawsuit against the social networking site. La Russa said Friday that Twitter has agreed to pay legal fees and make a donation to his Animal Rescue Foundation. La Russa filed suit last month in the Superior Court of California, claiming an unauthorized page that used his name caused emotional distress by making light of the manager's DUI charge and two Cardinals pitchers who died in recent seasons. The organization is likely to take control of the name twitter.com/TonyLaRussa. La Russa is founder and chairman of ARF, an organization in northern California that finds homes for pets.

THE WRIGHT STUFF

David Wright went 4 for 5 with a two-run double in the 10th inning for a 3-1 win over the Nationals on Friday night. Wright leads the Mets with 20 multihit games and has 27 RBIs in 34 games, and his key hit helped the Mets snap a three-game losing streak.

ATLANTA APOLOGY

Braves president John Schuerholz apologized Friday for the club's approach to releasing Tom Glavine, who was still seething when he said the Braves knew they were going to release him on Tuesday afternoon but "still paraded me out in Rome to a sold-out crowd'' for his minor league start that night. Glavine was due a $1 million bonus by being added to the 25-man roster.

TIGER STADIUM SURVIVES

The demolition of Tiger Stadium was halted by a judge Friday, just hours after crews began tearing down what's left of the historic ballpark. Wayne County Circuit Judge Isidore Torres issued a temporary restraining order that was requested by the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy, a nonprofit group that had tried to raise money to preserve and redevelop the ballpark.

STREAK SNAPPED

Ichiro Suzuki's hitting streak ended at 27 games after he went hitless in four at-bats in Seattle's 2-1 loss to the Mariners. ... The Dodgers ended the Phillies seven-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory.

SO LONG

Richard E. Jacobs, who stepped up along with his brother in the 1980s to rescue Cleveland's baseball franchise, died peacefully at the age of 83 on Friday. The team's new ballpark in downtown Cleveland became Jacobs Field when it opened in 1994, and the Indians made it to the World Series in 1995 and 1997. Jacobs owned the club until 2001.

SAY YOU'RE SORRY

Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios apologized after he was caught on video yelling profanities at a fan. The incident happened Thursday night as Rios was leaving a gala dinner for the Blue Jays' charity. He is seen walking to his car when he appears to ignore an autograph request from a young fan. An older man yells, "The way you played today Alex, you should be lucky somebody wants your autograph.'' Rios responded with a profanity.

I don't think I've ever seen a guy cross over like that and hit a home run, and that ended up being the game-winner.'' - Reds manager Dusty Baker, after Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano homered while winning his 100th career game, 2-1 over Cincinnati.

1918 - Casey Stengel, after being traded by Brooklyn in the offseason, made his return to Ebbets Field a memorable one. In his first at-bat, Stengel called time, stepped out of the batter's box and doffed his cap. A bird flew out and the fans broke into laughter.

1934 - Myril Hoag hit a major league record six singles in the New York Yankees' 15-3 rout of the Boston Red Sox.

1939 - The New York Giants hit five home runs in the fourth inning in a 17-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds at the Polo Grounds. With two out, Harry Danning, Al Demaree, Burgess Whitehead, Manny Salvo and Joe Moore connected as the Giants scored eight runs in the inning.

1965 - Tom Tresh of the New York Yankees connected for three consecutive home runs in a 12-0 rout of the Chicago White Sox. Tresh hit his first homer right-handed off Juan Pizzaro in the first inning, then went to the other side of the plate and hit two against Bruce Howard in the third and fifth innings.

1986 - San Diego Padres manager Steve Boros was ejected before the first pitch of the game with the Atlanta Braves when he tried to give umpire Charlie Williams a videotape of a disputed play in 4-2 loss to Atlanta the previous night.

1992 - Eddie Murray drove in two runs at Pittsburgh to pass Mickey Mantle (1,509) as the all-time RBI leader among switch-hitters.

1995 - J.D. Drew of Florida State hit a record-setting three homers in his final three at-bats in a 16-11 loss to Southern California in the College World Series. Drew finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and 12 total bases, also a series record.

1996 - For the second time in major league history and first in the AL, a cycle and a triple play took place in the same game. Boston's John Valentin hit for the cycle, while Chicago turned a triple play in the Red Sox's 7-4 victory. In 1931, Philadelphia's Chuck Klein hit for the cycle in the same game that the Phillies turned a triple play against the Chicago Cubs.

1998 - Jason Lane's grand slam capped a five-run ninth inning as Southern California won its first NCAA title in 20 years, beating Pac-10 rival Arizona State 21-14 in the College World Series.

2003 - The New York Mets ended Seattle's 13-game road winning streak with a 3-2 win in the first meeting between the teams. It was the longest streak in the majors since Detroit's 17 straight road wins in 1984.

2006 - Baltimore's Corey Patterson had his run of successive games with a stolen base stopped at nine in a 6-4 loss to Toronto. It was the longest run in the majors since Rickey Henderson had an identical stretch in 1986.

2007 - Trevor Hoffman became the first major leaguer with 500 career saves when he closed out the San Diego Padres' 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1921 - The Detroit Stars' Bill Gatewood pitches the first no-hitter in Negro League history, defeating the Cuban Stars 4-0.

1941 - The Giants use plastic batting helmets for the first time against the Pirates but lose a doubleheader to the Bucs 5-4 and 4-3. In the nightcap, Pittsburgh pitcher Rip Sewell sets an N.L. record by totaling 11 assists.

1944 - All major-league games are canceled as the country's focus is turned toward Europe while allied forces invade occupied France.

1958 - Ozzie Virgil, acquired from the Giants in January, becomes the first black player to appear in a Tigers game. He goes 1-for-5 in the 11-2 win over Washington.

1971 - Willie Mays strokes a 12th-inning home run off Joe Hoerner of the Phillies in the second game of a doubleheader, his 22nd — and last — career extra-inning homer, a major-league mark.

1975 - Nolan Ryan's bid for a second no-hitter in a row is foiled by Hank Aaron's single in the sixth inning. Ryan gives up one other hit in overpowering the Brewers 6-0.

1983 - The Twins select pitcher Tim Belcher with the first pick in the annual June free-agent draft, but Belcher will reject their $125,000 signing bonus offer and pitch for Team USA in the Pan American Games instead. Belcher will be the first person selected in the January 1984 draft. The Reds take Kurt Stillwell with the second pick. Roger Clemens is taken with 19th pick.

1990 - For the second time this season, Cecil Fielder belts three home runs in a game, as Detroit beats the Indians 6-4. Fielder becomes the fourth A.L. player to have two three-homer games in a season.

1991 - Albert Belle is shipped to the minors for not running out a ground ball in Cleveland's 2-1 loss to the White Sox.

1992 - Eddie Murray of the Mets becomes the all-time leader in RBI by a switch-hitter. He passes Mickey Mantle with his 1,510th RBI.

Howard scored one basket in Game 1, going 1-6 from floor, 10-16 from line, so he only tried 14 shots; Orlando starters combined to go 11-46 in game from floor, so unless that gets lot better, this will be a short series. Magic forced Bryant to take 34 shots in Game 1 (no one else took more than 12), but he was 16-34, too high a percentage. Lakers were 1-1 after two games in last two series-- this isn't a must-win for Orlando, but they have to compete here at least, play a close game.
