    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, June 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Stanley Cup final continues in Detroit, the WNBA tips off its season, and Mine That Bird guns for a Belmont Stakes win.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA Finals are idle on Saturday, leaving the day's hoops spotlight for the opening of the WNBA season. There are six games on the WNBA's slate, including Washington at Connecticut; the Sun are the biggest favorite on the day, giving eight points at home to the Mystics. Rounding out the schedule: Seattle at Sacramento, Indiana at Atlanta, Chicago at Minnesota, San Antonio at Phoenix, and Detroit at Los Angeles. The Sparks are 2/1 Vegas favorites to claim the title.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Phillies and Dodgers will kick off the National League slate on Saturday afternoon with a 4:10pm ET contest in Los Angeles. Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.86 ERA) will take the mound for Philadelphia, with the righthander having won each of his past three outings. Los Angeles will counter with Hiroki Kuroda (1-1, 2.53 ERA). The righthander has made just two starts in '09, returning from the DL on June 1.

Elsewhere around the National League on Saturday: San Francisco at Florida, the Mets at Washington, Pittsburgh at Houston, the Cubs at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at Atlanta, Colorado at St. Louis, and Arizona at San Diego. D-Backs starter Max Scherzer (2-4, 4.47 ERA) was pounded for eight runs in 3 2-3 innings in his last outing versus Atlanta. Josh Geer (1-1, 5.44 ERA) starts for the Padres.

Over in the American League on Saturday the Rays and Yankees continue their series in New York, with David Price (1-0, 3.00 ERA) taking on CC Sabathia (5-3, 3.46 ERA). As well, it'll be Kansas City at Toronto, Cleveland at the White Sox, Minnesota at Seattle, the Angels at Detroit, Texas at Boston, and Baltimore at Oakland. Righty Jason Berken (1-1, 2.25 ERA) will get the ball for the Orioles.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Stanley Cup final is knotted up at two games apiece as the series heads back to Detroit for Game 5 on Saturday night. The Penguins grabbed their second straight win over the Red Wings in Game 4 on Thursday, getting a goal and an assist each from Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 37 of 39 Detroit shots in the win, while Wings counterpart Chris Osgood made 27 saves. Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk sat out Thursday with his bad foot.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

With Rachel Alexandra taking a pass on Saturday's Belmont Stakes the favorite to win the third jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown is Mine That Bird. Jockey Calvin Borel will be back on Mine That Bird for the Belmont Stakes after he rode Rachel Alexandra to victory in the Preakness Stakes. Borel and Mine That Bird combined to win the Kentucky Derby last month, meaning the jockey has a chance to sweep the Triple Crown events. The top challenger for Saturday's race at Belmont Park is expected to be Charitable Man, with Dunkirk the third favorite.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Streaking

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox, (3-5, 5.75 ERA)

After a slow start to the season, Floyd is finding his groove on the bump. The righty has tossed at least seven innings in each of his past three starts after doing so only twice in his first eight starts of the year.

White Sox bettors were rewarded with a 2-1 record during the recent uprising and under bettors cashed their tickets in all three games thanks to Floyd’s 1.96 ERA. The under might be worth a strong look against the Indians Saturday. The White Sox have the third-worst batting average in the American League (.253 BA).

Nick Blackburn, Minnesota Twins, (5-2, 3.50 ERA)

You go Nick Blackburn. The Twins hurler has won his last three starts and has pitched for a tiny 1.35 ERA during the win spurt.

Blackburn has made for a solid bet all season, going at least six innings in all but one of his 11 starts so far. He’s even better in the day time when his ERA drops to 2.41 compared to 4.54 in the evening.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. local time in Seattle.

        Slumping

Derek Holland, Texas Rangers, (1-2, 6.33 ERA)

Holland is learning the hard way what it takes to be a major league pitcher. The rookie, who worked his way through the minor leagues last year and then through the bullpen this year, has given up six home runs in 27 innings.

He has earned a respectable nine strikeouts in his only two starts so far, but he also gave up three homers and eight earned runs in 10 2/3 innings in those efforts. Texas manager Ron Washington told the Dallas Morning News that Holland won’t ever back down against a hitter but that he also has a lot to learn about location.

He might get another lesson against a Red Sox squad Saturday that’s hitting .281 BA against lefties at home this season.

                  Ice Picks: NHL best bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (-150, 5.5)

The Red Wings might be able to rattle Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury again in Game 5, but it probably won't be enough to grab the momentum again if they can't slow down Evgeni Malkin. The NHL's regular-season scoring champion is tops in the playoffs with 35 points, and his 14 goals are second only to Crosby (15).

Malkin energized Mellon Arena in Game 4 by staking the Penguins to a 1-0 lead in the first period, then nearly brought that old building down by setting up Crosby's go-ahead goal - and first of the series - in the decisive second period.

That marked the fourth time Crosby and Malkin scored in the same game during these playoffs. Malkin has the most points in the playoffs since Wayne Gretzky had 40 in 1993.

The Penguins shook off Detroit's 2-1 lead in the middle frame and scored three goals in a span of 5:37 - a spurt that started with Jordan Staal's short-handed tally at 8:35.

Making that momentum stick will likely be necessary for the Penguins to come all the way back from their 2-0 hole. They have the experience, having pulled it off that comeback against Washington in a seven-game series in the second round.

Keeping an even keel through the ups and downs isn't easy.

''We're so focused on playing the right way and doing the right thing,'' Crosby said. ''We take a lot of pride in that, so we don't let our focus sway too much. That's probably the biggest challenge of the playoffs, mentally.

''We've been in this situation before and we know that it gets more difficult as the series wears on. We've done a good job here at home, but we've got to move on.''

                  Pick: Pittsburgh +130

                    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Stanley Cup finals Game 5
                    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (-150)

                    Sid the Kid

Arguably, the biggest name in hockey, Sidney Crosby, has risen to the challenge of facing off with Hockey Town. A spectacular Game 4 performance has sent the Stanley Cup finals back to Joe Louis Arena tied 2-2.

With his back against the wall, Crosby finally got in the scorebook, tallying an assist to go along with his second period goal.

"The last couple have been desperation [games] for us," Crosby told reporters. "It's going to be like that all the way through."

Crosby’s goal was his first against Detroit since the two teams met in a 7-6 overtime win for the Penguins at home in November - which begs the assumption: If Sid scores, the Pens can't lose.

                    Home sweet home

After opening Game 4 with a 1-1 tie into the first intermission, Pittsburgh exploded for three goals in the second period and held off a strong Red Wings’ attack in the third.

For those who played the under, assuming that both teams would not combine to top the 5.5-goal total, that strong second period caused many unhappy campers. Previously, the under had been 10-3 for the Red Wings when facing the Eastern Conference.

Lucky enough, the under still bodes well for Detroit fans. The Under is 4-0 in the last four Red Wings home games, as well as home games where the Wings are favored. Goalie Chris Osgood has allowed seven goals in the back-to-back road losses while only giving up two goals the Detroit’s two home wins.

                    Far from melancholy

If the entertainment value was ever in question concerning the Stanley Cup finals, no game has been more exciting than Game 4.

Obviously the excitement weighs heavily towards Pittsburgh thanks to the raucous atmosphere provided by another Pennsylvania White-Out. When Jordan Staal scored on a shorthanded goal at 8:35 of the second period, Mellon Arena went absolutely crazy.

"That was a big momentum changer for us," said Maxime Talbot, who assisted on the play. "The building was so loud, it gave us a lot of emotion."

Staal’s was the first of three second period goals, marking the 17th time the Penguins have scored three goals or more in this year's playoffs. The over had been kind to the Pens as well, playing to a 4-1 record in Pittsburgh's last five home games. Hitting the road shouldn't hurt the Penguins either, as the over/under is 27-21 when traveling.

                    Visions of greatness

Evgeni Malkin opened scoring in Game 4 with a power-play goal at 2:39 of the first period. In the second, Malkin assisted on Sidney Crosby's goal, pushing his points total to 35 - more than any player since Wayne Gretzky in 1993.

It was the 12th time Crosby and Malkin have each notched multi-point games in this postseason. That pace is now second all-time to the Great One and Mario Lemieux, who each recorded 14 in 1988 and 1991 respectively.

With the efforts in Game 4, Pittsburgh is now 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games against the Western Conference. Aside from trying to capture Lord Stanley's Cup, Malkin is also trying to become the first player since Lemieux (1992) to lead the NHL in both regular season and playoff scoring.

                    Datsyuk watch

Heading into Game 4, there were conflicting reports surrounding the status of Detroit’s leading scorer Pavel Datsyuk. Many news sources indicated the Hart Trophy nominee was returning to action and appeared to be correct when he took the ice for **** warm-ups.

However, after a few trips around the ice, Datsyuk was scratched from the lineup. He hasn’t played since Game 2 of the Western Conference finals due to what could be a broken foot. According to the Red Wings, Datsyuk was a game scratch before he even took the ice Thursday night and his status for Game 5 is very much up in the air.

"It was a smart move," Detroit centre Henrik Zetterberg told reporters. "Definitely, he wasn't ready or he would've played."

While the training staff isn’t giving Datsyuk the green light, Red Wings bettors are getting anxious after watching the team’s offense struggle to match Pittsburgh’s production. Before his injury he had one goals and six assists in the playoffs.

"We're hoping to have him back in the next game," Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom told the media of Datsyuk’s presence. "We didn't know if he was going to show up tonight for the game.

"It was questionable. But if he comes back for the next one, he just adds that extra dimension to our team.

"He works really hard defensively. He's just tough to play against."

Chicago Sky at Minnesota Lynx (-2, 152.5)

The timing wasn't ideal for the Minnesota Lynx, who were forced to replace their coach just three days before the season opener.

The Lynx will play their first game under new coach Jennifer Gillom on Saturday night when they host the Chicago Sky, who enter their fourth season in the league looking for their first winning record.

Minnesota suffered its fourth straight losing season in 2008 with a 16-18 mark, but opted to bring back coach Don Zierden for a third season. The Minneapolis native, though, surprised the franchise Wednesday when he resigned to become an assistant with the Washington Wizards.

That left the Lynx in a bind, and they turned to Gillom, who played in the WNBA from 1997-2003 and was an assistant under Zierden last year.

                        Pick: Chicago +2

San Antonio Silver Stars at Phoenix Mercury (-2, 163)

After its first WNBA finals experience ended with a major disappointment, San Antonio has championship expectations in 2009.

The defending Western Conference champion Silver Stars open their season Saturday night at US Airways Center where they'll face a Phoenix Mercury team looking to regain its championship form.

San Antonio finished with a franchise-best 24-10 record last season, going 14-0 versus Eastern Conference teams. The Silver Stars, though, lost the first two games of the finals at home then were swept in three by the Detroit Shock.

However, with Becky Hammon, Sophia Young and Vickie Johnson back, San Antonio is targeting much more than just the league's best regular-season record and another conference championship banner.

"We're going to continue to grow and try to win a championship," Johnson said.

Hammon averaged 17.6 points and 4.9 assists per game last season while Young finished fourth in MVP voting, averaging 17.5 points and 5.6 rebounds.

The Silver Stars will be without center Ann Wauters until later in the season due to personal reasons. She scored 14.7 points per game in 2008 and was sixth in the league in rebounding (7.5).

Ruth Riley and 6-foot-8 Katie Mattera, signed in the offseason, will try to fill the void left by Wauters.

Guard Shanna Crossley is back after missing last season with a torn ACL, and Belinda Snell signed with San Antonio in the offseason after not playing in the WNBA in 2008. She averaged 3.4 points in three seasons (2005-07) with the Mercury.

                        Pick: San Antonio +2
