Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs (-138)

The Dodgers send the surgically repaired arm of Eric Milton (1-0 3.00) up against Sean Marshall (3-3 3.70) and the Cubs in the conclusion of their four-game series in Chicago.

Chicago's bat woke up, scoring seven runs in the 7-0 shutout of the Dodgers Saturday. The two teams traded 2-1 victories in the first two games of the series.

    Ram up

The Dodgers haven’t missed a beat since Manny Ramirez was suspended for 50 games on May 7. He's eligible to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 3, 11 days before the All-Star game in St. Louis.

Speaking of the All-Star Game, MLB is growing uneasy with the fact that Manny is climbing the All-Star ballot. It would be uncomfortable for the league to see him named a starter to this year’s contest.

“The All-Star game is for the fans and I think if he got voted in, then it would be appropriate for him to play," said Charlie Manuel, Philadelphia’s manager and NL boss for this year’s event. "Once he serves his suspension, he's paid his penalty and he's just like every other player."

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa doesn’t agree.

"The fans have a right to vote, but I think it's probably not fair to the guys who are out there playing," he said. "It's pretty tough to do what he did and then miss a good part of the season. But it's up to the fans."

    And the countdown continues.

    Ram down

The frustration being felt by Cubs 3B Aramis Ramirez continues to amplify with each loss. Ramirez was hitting .364 BA with four home runs and 16 RBI when he dislocated his left shoulder May 8 diving to stop a line drive. His teammates continue to struggle through their worst losing streak in years.

''It's hard watching because I can't help. All I can do is watch,'' told reporters. ''Everyone is frustrated. We know we're better than we are playing right now. That's why everyone is frustrated.''

The All-Star third baseman is not expected back until after the All-Star break. The hole at third base has been glaring, not only for the lack of a true third baseman to fill in defensively but because Ramirez is one of the National League's best hitters.

With Ramirez sidelined, the loss of Mark DeRosa from last year's club has become especially noticeable. DeRosa hit 21 homers and drove in 87 runs for the Cubs in 2008 before being traded to Cleveland for three minor league pitchers in the off-season. This season, DeRosa has already hit seven homers and 30 RBI for the Indians.

Heading into this series, the Cubs were on a 6-10 slide since Ramirez was hurt.

    Empty plates

Neither pitcher brings a lot to the table Sunday.

Eric Milton did not make one start in 2008 and only started six games in 2007. He picked up his first win since 2006 in his most recent start, a 7-1 victory at Colorado this past Tuesday.

The 11-year veteran lasted five innings, allowing one run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. That win snapped a streak of eight straight team start losses for Milton, dating back to 2006. Milton is 3-10 in his last 13 team starts during the month of May.

Sean Marshall has struggled with the Cubs, dropping 13 of his last 16 team starts, including 10 of his last 12 at home. Marshall is also 4-8 with a 4.53 ERA in his career team starts during the month of May.

    Looking back

Heading in to this four-game showdown, the Dodgers had won five of the previous six games in this series. They've dropped two of the first three games during this four-game set.

The Cubs have found solace at home on Sundays, where they are 14-3 in their last 17 tries.

    SCOREBOARD

    Sunday, May 31

Washington at Philadelphia (1:35 p.m.EDT). The Phillies' Jamie Moyer makes his sixth try for his 250th win, against the foundering Nationals.

    SEASONS

    May 31

1914 - Joseph Benz of the White Sox pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians for a 6-1 victory.

1927 - Detroit first baseman Johnny Neun made an unassisted triple play against Cleveland. He caught Homer Summa's liner, tagged Charlie Jamieson between first and second and then touched second base before Glenn Myatt could return. The Tigers beat the Indians 1-0.

1937 - Carl Hubbell's 24-game winning streak ended with a 10-3 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hubbell's last defeat came on July 13, 1936, 1-0 to the Chicago Cubs.

1944 - Al Unser's only home run of the year, a pinch-hit grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, helped the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 6-2.

1964 - The New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants played the longest doubleheader in major league history - nine hours, 52 minutes - with the help of a 23-inning game in the nightcap that was won by the visiting Giants 8-6 on run-scoring hits by Del Crandall and Felipe Alou against Galen Cisco. The second game took 7:23 to play.

1970 - Chicago's Luis Aparicio and Walt Williams each collected five hits in a 22-13 rout of the Boston Red Sox. Williams also scored five times. The two teams had 40 hits, one short of the AL record set in 1950.

1980 - Ken Landreaux went 0-for-4 in Minnesota's 11-1 loss to Baltimore, ending his hitting streak at 31 consecutive games. It was the longest streak in the American League since Dom DiMaggio's 34-game streak in 1949.

1997 - Ila Borders became the first woman to pitch in a regular-season professional game, in the sixth inning of the St. Paul Saints' Northern League game against Sioux Falls. She gave up three earned runs without getting an out.

1999 - Umpire Frank Pulli used TV replay to take away a home run from Florida's Cliff Floyd in the fifth inning of the Marlins' 5-2 loss to St. Louis.

2008 - Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox hit career homer No. 500, a drive off Baltimore right-hander Chad Bradford to become the 24th major leaguer to reach the milestone.

Today's birthdays: Andrew Bailey 25; Jake Peavy 28.

    This Day in Baseball
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 31 in Baseball History...

1937 - A Memorial Day crowd of 61,756, the second-largest crowd in Polo Grounds history, sees the Dodgers end Carl Hubbell's consecutive-game winning streak at 24 over two seasons. Brooklyn routs King Carl in the fourth inning and wins 10-3.

1942 - Before 22,000 at Griffith Stadium, Satchel Paige pitches five innings to defeat the Dizzy Dean All-Stars 8-1. Dean pitches just the first inning. The game a week earlier, in which Paige won 3-1 at Wrigley Field, drew 29,000. Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis will prohibit a scheduled July 4 matchup because the first two games outdrew major-league games.

1948 - A lefthander for Schenectady (Canadian-American League) named Tom Lasorda strikes out 25 in a 15-inning game against Amsterdam.

1964 - After Juan Marichal's 5-3, first-game win, San Francisco holds a 6-1 lead in the nightcap until New York rallies for five runs to tie it in the seventh. Eventually, with two down in the 23rd inning, pinch-hitter Del Crandall delivers a run-scoring double off Galen Cisco, and the Giants prevail 8-6 after a record seven hours and 22 minutes. Gaylord Perry pitches ten scoreless innings to get credit for the win. Thirty-two innings and an elapsed time of nine hours and 50 minutes are doubleheader records, as are 47 strikeouts.

1975 - The Royals beat the Brewers 7-5 in a game bridging the generation gap. Hank Aaron and Harmon Killebrew are in their 22nd major-league seasons and winning pitcher Lindy McDaniel is in his 21st. All three were playing in the majors before Brewers shortstop Robin Yount was born.

1979 - Pat Underwood makes his major league debut for Detroit, pitching 8 1/3 innings in shutting out Toronto 1-0. The losing pitcher is Pat's brother, Tom.

1980 - Ken Landreaux goes 0-for-4 in Minnesota's 11-1 loss to the Orioles to end his hitting streak at 31 consecutive games. Baltimore southpaw Scott McGregor does the honors. It is the longest streak in the A.L. since Dom DiMaggio's 34-game stretch in 1949.

1981 - Playing before their tenth consecutive home sellout, the Dodgers pound the Reds 16-4 and raise their season attendance to 1,026,725 in 22 dates. It is the earliest any team has cracked the one million attendance barrier.

1983 - A.L. President Lee MacPhail suspends Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for one week, citing "repeated problems" with the outspoken owner's public criticism of umpires. Steinbrenner, who had been fined $50,000 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn during spring training for berating some N.L. umpires, cannot attend games or be in his Yankee Stadium office during the suspension.

1984 - Mario Soto is suspended for five days by N.L. president Chub Feeney for his role in a 32-minute melee that marred the Reds-Cubs game on May 27. After shoving third base umpire Steve Rippley, who had signaled that Ron Cey's long fly ball was a three-run home run (it was later ruled foul), a bat-wielding Soto then tried to attack a park vendor who had thrown a bag of ice at him. Soto will be suspended again for five more days later in the season for his June 16 fight with Claudell Washington.

1996 - Albert Belle uses a forearm to break up a double play and nearly breaks Milwaukee second baseman Fernando Vina's nose in the process. The Cleveland slugger is suspended for two games.

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals (-169, 7.5)

The level of dominance Zack Greinke is showing hasn't been seen in the majors in more than four decades. The Chicago White Sox have experienced twice already how tough the Kansas City right-hander is.

Greinke look to become the first nine-game winner in the majors Sunday afternoon as the Royals try to avoid being swept at home by the Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City (23-26) entered this series having lost six of eight, but hoped to continue its success this season against Chicago (23-25) after winning four of the first five meetings. Instead, they'll turn to their ace, hoping he can help salvage a victory in the finale.

Greinke (8-1, 0.84 ERA) is tied with Toronto's Roy Halladay for the major league lead in wins. He leads the majors in ERA and complete games and has yet to give up a home run in 75 innings this season. Greinke pitched his fifth complete game Tuesday against Detroit, allowing one run and six hits while striking out eight in a 6-1 victory.

Greinke is the first pitcher since San Francisco's Juan Marichal in 1966 to have an ERA under 1.00 through his first 10 starts. Marichal was 9-0 with a 0.59 ERA over 92 innings pitched.

The White Sox were unable to figure Greinke out in two previous matchups. He's pitched 15 scoreless innings in two wins against them, allowing nine hits with 17 strikeouts. Greinke tossed a six-hitter in a 3-0 home win over Chicago on May 4.

"Best pitching performance I've seen in a long time by a major league pitcher," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He's got great stuff."

        Pick: Kansas City -169

Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers (-191, 8)

With a lineup boasting sluggers Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun, it was only a matter of time before the Milwaukee Brewers broke out of their offensive slump.

The Brewers look to build off their highest-scoring game in weeks and sweep the Cincinnati Reds for the first time in three years Sunday in the finale of their three-game set at Miller Park.

After scoring six runs in its three previous games combined, Milwaukee (29-20) plated six in the fifth inning of Saturday's 9-5 victory over the Reds (26-22).

Fielder, Corey Hart and Craig Counsell each had three hits for the Brewers, who pounded out 16 hits after scoring 15 runs and batting just .195 in their previous seven games. Fielder, Braun and Mike Cameron all homered as Milwaukee scored its most runs since a 12-6 win over the Chicago Cubs on May 9.

"Guys are shaking loose a little bit,'' manager Ken Macha said. "Let's hope we have a carryover.''

        Pick: Over 8

What Bettors Need to Know: Stanley Cup Final Game 2
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings

              Faceoff domination

It was the type of domination that you might see once in a while in the NHL preseason, rarely during the regular season, but never in the Stanley Cup Final. The Detroit Red Wings won 71 percent of the faceoffs in Game 1.

Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma says they have done their home work and need a more complete effort from everyone in the faceoff circle.

“The wingers need to jump in and help out, rarely does the centre win it back clearly, that’s an area we can do a better job of,“ said Bylsma during the postgame press conference.

              The bounces

All the talk following Game 1 was how the Red Wings got the bounces but was it really the bounces or poor goaltending by Marc-Andre Fleury?

He will need to make adjustments Sunday evening or the Pens will be heading home down 2-0. Chris Osgood said he knows how Fleury feels and says at times this season he was a victim of the Joe Louis bounce.

“It’s tough for goalies, especially if it goes back one side and then out the other, all you can do it just get back to your post as fast as you can,” Osgood told the media.

An optimist would point out that the Red Wings deserve their bounces, because they intentionally create them.

“When you are on the point and you can’t see the net, sometimes you try to bank it short side to get a bounce to bring it out in front of the net, the pucks bouncing a lot out there,” Nicklas Lidstrom told reporters.

              Depth delivers

Depth was one of the clear-cut advantages that Detroit had coming into Game 1 and it paid off in the third period.

Rookie Justin Abdelkader scored his first NHL playoff goal in the final frame. Abdelkader played just over five minutes in the opener, the least of any player on either team, but managed to find the back of the net. Wings bench boss Mike Babcock started to show confidence in his fourth line by playing them more regular in the second half of the third period.

              Quick turn around

The rest between games will be just 21 hours and Wings Captain Nicklas Lidstrom says his team’s depth could play a key role in Game 2.

“When the game starts, you have to keep the shifts short, get your legs going and try to get all four lines moving,” said Lidstrom.

If the Wings fourth line can earn their ice time early, a guy like Henrik Zetterberg may be able to save his legs for a little later in the game.

              Dastyuk update

Pavel Datsyuk has skated two days in a row now but the Wings are keeping hush hush on when he will be ready to return.

“When he first gets on the ice, his foot is stiff and it takes a while for him to get going,” Babcock told reporters. “He’s tried a few things and it hasn’t responded. Our medical people are trying as hard as they can. He’ll be back as soon as he can. That’s all I can tell you.”

                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals

Wainwright tries to match his career-high winning streak on Sunday when the St. Louis Cardinals conclude their three-game road set against the San Francisco Giants.

Wainwright has been outstanding in winning his last two games, allowing two runs and 10 hits with 16 strikeouts in 15 2-3 innings.

The right-hander claimed he wasn't at his best on Tuesday, striking out a career-high nine while yielding one run and five hits in an 8-1 win at Milwaukee. The right-hander even helped himself out with a solo homer in the fourth.

"My arm was just not in a position to throw a baseball correctly (Tuesday), but I just said I was going to fire it up there and let my defense work," said Wainwright, who has reached at least the seventh inning in each of his last three starts, going 2-1 with a 1.14 ERA.

                Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals

The level of dominance Zack Greinke is showing hasn't been seen in the majors in more than four decades. The Chicago White Sox have experienced twice already how tough the Kansas City right-hander is.

Greinke looks to become the first nine-game winner in the majors Sunday afternoon as the Royals try to avoid being swept at home by the Chicago White Sox.

                Slumping

                Mike Hampton, Houston Astros

Once among the best in the majors, Mike Hampton hasn't been effective enough to be involved in any pitching duels this season. Matching up with Paul Maholm and the Pittsburgh Pirates may give him a chance to revisit past glory.

Hampton takes the mound for the Houston Astros on Sunday seeking his eighth straight win against the Pirates, who hope Maholm can continue his success against their NL Central rivals in the finale of a three-game set.

After going 73-41 games with a 3.35 ERA from 1996-00, Hampton (2-4, 5.63 ERA) had a rough two-year stint with Colorado followed by two decent seasons with Atlanta before various injuries sidelined him for most of the past four years.

While he may be headed to playing in his first full season since 2004, the left-hander has been unreliable. Hampton has surrendered five runs or more in four of his last five starts. On Sunday, he gave up five runs and eight hits in five innings of a 5-0 loss to Texas.

"He's not consistent in the strike zone like he needs to be," Houston manager Cecil Cooper said.

Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado Rockies

Colorado hopes Jorge De La Rosa (0-5, 5.26) can show improvement after failing to get out of the fourth inning in each of his last two outings.

The left-hander lost a career-high six consecutive decisions over seven games from May 24-June 22, 2007. De La Rosa got closer to that dubious mark Monday, getting pulled after recording two outs in the fourth while giving up seven runs in the inning and seven total hits in a 16-6 loss to the Dodgers.

He was victimized by another big inning in his previous start on May 20, allowing six of seven runs in the fourth before exiting with two outs in a 12-4 loss at Atlanta.

"(On Monday) he did it for the first couple of innings, and that inning he just started overthrowing again," Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba told the club's official Web site. "When you start overthrowing, it's going to be ball one, ball two. Then you have to come very much right in the middle."

De La Rosa, who was 10-8 with a 4.92 ERA last year, didn't get the decision in his last start against the Padres on May 4, allowing six runs - three earned - and three hits in five innings of a 9-6 win at San Diego.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (NA)

The Detroit Red Wings opened the Stanley Cup finals with an easy win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Neither team will have much time to rest, reflect or make adjustments.

For the first time in more than 50 years, finals games will be played on back-to-back nights as the Penguins and Red Wings meet in Game 2 on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit got the go-ahead goal from Johan Franzen - his team-high 11th of the postseason - in the final minute of the second period and Chris Osgood finished with 31 saves in Saturday's 3-1 victory.

More important for Mike Babcock's club, though, was slowing down Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who were tied for the postseason scoring lead with 28 points coming into the finals.

"We knew coming into this series that these guys, when you've been here before, you know what to expect so you're ready to start on time," the Detroit coach said.

After being blanked by Osgood in the first two games of last year's finals, the Penguins said they had a different mind-set. Still, only Ruslan Fedotenko scored off an assist from Malkin.

"We can do a better job," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "I think there are some areas that we can keep at. But that's the challenges. And getting back at it (Sunday) is a good thing for us."

Crosby entered Detroit on a six-game point streak and with an NHL-high 14 postseason goals, but managed only two shots. A third-period drive by him rang off the post, ended up on Osgood's back and was smothered.

"I've never seen that happen before. I've never seen the puck stay on a goalie's back like that and just sit there," the Penguins captain said.

It's been 12 years since the last repeat Stanley Cup champion - Detroit in 1997 and 1998 - and 25 years after the most recent finals rematch as Edmonton and the New York Islanders squared off.But generations have passed since finals games were played on consecutive nights.

On April 9, 1955, the Red Wings and Canadiens met in Montreal with the Canadiens winning 5-3 to even the series at 2-all. The next night in Detroit, the Red Wings posted a 5-1 victory, and went on to win the Cup in seven.

A big reason for the short turnaround this time is NBC and the league didn't want to stunt excitement about a matchup with the potential to draw nontraditional viewers.

Preparing to play two high-pressure games in a 24-hour span also will be a little different.

"You've got to make sure you get a lot of food in you tonight and get a good night's sleep," said 39-year-old Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who returned after missing the final two games of the Western Conference finals with an injury. "When the game starts (Sunday), I think you have to keep the shifts a little bit shorter.

"Keep your legs going again, but keep your shifts shorter and try to get the four lines rolling as well so everybody gets into it again."

Looking to move halfway toward their fifth Cup in 12 years and 12th overall, the Red Wings haven't lost in Game 2 of the finals since falling to the Canadiens in 1954. Detroit has outscored its opponents 22-8 in Game 2s against Montreal (1955), Philadelphia (1997), Washington (1998), Carolina (2002) and a 3-0 win last year over Pittsburgh.

"It's a race to four," Bylsma said. "They got one."

Falling into an 0-2 hole, though, could doom the Pens' hopes of hoisting their first Cup since the Mario Lemieux-Jaromir Jagr heydays in 1992.

Since the best-of-7 format was introduced in 1939, teams that have gone up 2-0 in the finals are 41-3. No team has blown a 2-0 lead since Chicago against Montreal in 1971.

"This is tight hockey," Crosby said. "We didn't expect to come in here and have it be easy. But the good thing is we've got a short period of time here to prepare and get ready for Game 2. We're confident that we can get one here and go home."

Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

                    Pick: Pittsburgh

                      STRUGGLING RED

The Cincinnati Reds have placed first baseman Joey Votto on the 15-day disabled list, citing stress-related issues linked to his recent struggles with an inner ear infection. Votto left Friday night's game against Milwaukee after missing 12 starts and leaving two other games early during a 17-game stretch this month. He was expected to head back to Cincinnati, and Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said Saturday the timeline for his return is unclear.

                      SNAPPED

St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter saw his scoreless streak end at 21 1-3 innings when Fred Lewis doubled and scored on Uribe's triple. Carpenter finished strong, allowing six hits with five strikeouts over six innings. He fell just short of Bob Gibson's team record of five consecutive starts without allowing an earned run.

                      SLAMMING AWAY

Philly slugger Ryan Howard surpassed Mike Schmidt's team-record with his eighth grand slam. The ball traveled 475 feet and became only the second ball to reach the third deck in right field. He also added a solo homer for his 19th career multihomer game.

                      WELCOME BACK

CC Sabathia didn't allow the Cleveland Indians a hit until the fifth inning, working seven strong innings to beat his former team for the first time since signing a $161 million, seven-year contract with New York as a free agent in December. He allowed three runs, five hits and three walks, striking out eight in the Yankees' 10-5 victory.

                      HIT MACHINE

Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki was 1 for 4 with a first-inning single that extended his hitting streak to 23 games, equaling the second-longest of his big league career and putting him within two of the franchise record he set in 2007.

                      STELLAR IN THE FIELD

The New York Yankees played their 16th straight errorless game, one short of the major league record set by the Red Sox in June 2006, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                      SPEAKING

"His command was so much better today. His stuff was really good, too. On Monday he had good stuff, he just didn't have the command and he was pitching behind the count the whole time.'' - Cubs manager Lou Piniella on starter Ryan Dempster, who rebounded from an awful start to pitch seven sharp innings in Chicago's 7-0 victory over Los Angeles.

                      SEASONS

New York Yankees at Cleveland Indians [TBS | 12:40 PM ET]

Yankees (-130, O/U 10.5): Phil Hughes (3-2, 5.16) tries to win his third straight start. The righty is settling down after going 0-2 with an 11.81 ERA in his first three May starts. "I think I've got a clearer mind-set now," Hughes said. "When you start letting other things leak into your head about managerial moves or what's going to happen, it's negative. I just try to think about pitching. One pitch, one game at a time." In his only career start against the Indians on 8/10/07, Hughes allowed one run and four hits with six strikeouts in six innings of a 6-1 victory. The Yankees have won 14 of their last 17 games.

The Yankees are 25-9 in their last 34 vs. a team with a losing record.
The Yankees are 13-3 in their last 16 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - OF Xavier Nady (elbow) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Melky Cabrera (shoulder) is DOUBTFUL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Indians: Carl Pavano signed a one-year, free-agent contract with Cleveland in January and after going 0-3 with a 9.50 ERA in four April starts, Pavano is 5-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six outings this month. "I'm feeling better, getting deeper in games," Pavano said. "I didn't exactly know what to expect this year, but I worked hard and stayed positive. There's still a long way to go for me to be remotely settled in." Pavano has made one start against the Yankees since his disastrous tenure with them concluded. On April 19, he yielded one run and four hits in six innings of a 7-3 loss, but didn't factor in the decision.

The Over is 20-6 in the Indians' last 26 games as an underdog.
The Under is 10-3 in the Indians' last 13 home games vs. a right-handed starter.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Dodgers: LA has scored 279 runs - by far the most in the NL - but been held to three in this series. "We have to look at this, we're very fortunate that we've scored three runs in three games and we have one win. We're certainly more capable of doing more damage but we haven't done it. But you have to give most of the credit to the two guys who pitched against us these two days," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. LA has not lost three straight all season. Eric Milton is 3-1 with a 6.70 ERA in eight career starts at Wrigley Field, where he hasn't pitched since 2006.

The Dodgers are 20-8 in their last 28 games vs. a left-handed starter.

Key Injuries - OF Manny Ramirez (suspension) is OUT.
3B Casey Blake (hamstring) is QUESTIONABLE.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cubs (-145, O/U N/A): Sean Marshall (3-3, 3.70 ERA) will make his third career start versus the Dodgers. The left-hander is 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA in the first two, and hasn't lasted past the fifth inning. Marshall pitched all five innings in a rain-shortened 6-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Tuesday, giving up four hits while striking out six. Facing Eric Milton may help Alfonso Soriano, who is 6 for 12 in his career versus the southpaw. The slumping Soriano is 6 for 45 (.133) with 17 strikeouts in his last 11 games. The Cubs have won four of five since losing a season-worst eight straight games.

The Cubs are 2-12 in Marshall's last 14 starts as a favorite.
The Cubs are 3-13 in Marshall's last 16 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - 3B Aramis Ramirez (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)
