Odom had 19 points, 14 boards in Game 5 win; now Lakers go to Finals if they win Game 6 here, where they split Games 3-4. Denver got to the foul line 37-49 times in its two series wins, 35-31-30 in losses, so they have to take ball to basket and make it a foul shooting contest. LA subs kicked Denver's butt in Game 5 (Nugget subs were combined -41). The home team has yet to trail at halftime (4-0-1) in series. Underdog is 6-4 vs spread so far in this round of the playoffs.

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets [ESPN | 9:05 PM ET]

Lakers: The Lakers finally discovered ways to get more balanced play, especially from their bigs. Derek Fisher said, "It's possible something clicked for us as a group last night against this team. We may have found some things we can do that allows us to attack them from everywhere. We feel we can't be beat when everybody's getting a chance to play." Kobe Bryant said, "We've had stretches where we've played excellent defense, but the competition we're facing with this Denver Nuggets team is unlike anything we've ever seen. They have so many scorers, they have an inside presence. So ... I'm very proud of how we performed in that stretch."

The Lakers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU win.
The Under is 9-1 in the Lakers' last 10 Conference Finals games.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Nuggets (-5.5, O/U 208.5): Denver must win two games in a 48-hour span against the Lakers, who haven't lost back-to-back games since March. "For most of the series, we outplayed them for most stretches of the game," Chauncey Billups said. "We just couldn't get over the hump in the fourth quarter in a few different situations." Denver has committed 11 technical fouls in this series and defensive stud Dahntay Jones is one more flagrant-1 foul away from a suspension. Coach George Karl said he won't rein in his players for Game 6 in Friday night in Denver.

The Nuggets are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 playoff games as a favorite.
The Nuggets are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games following a SU loss.

    Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 109 (Side Play of the Day)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-5.5, 208)

The Lakers return to Denver with a chance to eliminate the Nuggets and move on to the NBA Finals. Los Angeles took Game 5 at the Staples Center Wednesday night in large part because of a wakeup performance from Lamar Odom.

The normally passive player took more shot attempts than any other Laker (including Kobe Bryant) and finished with 19 points along with 14 rebounds and four blocks.

Odom has been criticized for his lack of production in this series even though he’s playing with a badly bruised and swollen back.

“You know, I won’t make no excuse about playing well or not playing well,” Odom told the Los Angeles Times. “If my back is hurt or isn’t hurt, I’m just going to go out there and give it 100 percent.”

Odom wasn’t the only Laker proving he still had a pulse. Veteran point guard Derek Fisher, who has endured one of the worst shooting stretches of his career, scored 12 points.

Denver’s problem is the same as the Cavs. Late in the fourth quarter when they really need a hoop, the Nuggets don’t stick to their offensive system. Instead, Carmelo Anthony takes it on himself to go 1-on-5 against the Lakers.

For Melo and Co. to finish with a different result in Game 6, they’ll need a better effort from Chauncey Billups. The Nuggets are at their best when the former Finals MVP is controlling the offense and directing traffic – ensuring that his team gets quality chances with each possession.

Denver’s bench players are night and day with their performances at home and on the road. Chris Andersen is a perfect example. The Birdman feasts on the energy the home fans give him – kind of like when the Ultimate Warrior used to grab the ropes and shake them to build up his power.

The Lakers won’t repeat the same mistake they made last series against the Houston Rockets. They don’t want to come back home for a Game 7 and restore Denver’s confidence.

    Pick: Lakers +5.5

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: L.A. Lakers at Denver Nuggets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-5, 208.5)

    The betting line

The Nuggets opened as 6-point favorites, but that line was quickly adjusted to -5. It's the most that Denver has been favored by in this series after laying 4.5 points in Game 4.

The total continues to fluctuate between 208 and 209 points. Four of the first five games in this series have played under and the oddsmakers have adjusted accordingly. Game 1 featured a posted total of 214.

Early money has come in on the Lakers and the over. That's been a constant trend throughout this series.

A little help from his friends

Kobe Bryant didn't have to carry his team to victory in Game 5. His supporting cast finally showed up, with four other players scoring in double figures. Kobe himself scored only 22, his lowest total of the series, but also dished out a series high eight assists.

Kobe said after the game it was all a part of his plan.

“It was a big gamble for me coming in, but I wanted to change my approach this game and be more of a decoy,” Bryant said. “The past couple games they really were loading to my side and I figured I could be a decoy and try to give chances to my teammates.”
Whether it was his call or not, the gameplan worked. Although to the Nuggets’ credit, they were tied entering the fourth quarter.

    Bouncing back

The Nuggets have been an excellent bounce-back team in these playoffs, posting a perfect 4-0 record (both straight-up and against the number) after a loss.

Going back to the end of the regular season, they've won and covered in eight consecutive games following a loss.

Carmelo Anthony is confident that his team can keep that streak intact and force a seventh and deciding game.

“We’re excited about this. We’re going home. We got a chance to win at home and see what happens in Game 7.”

    Foul trouble

The officials have been major players in the direction of this series - which is nothing new when it comes to the NBA.

Nuggets head coach George Karl wasn't happy with the way Game 5 was called, this one game after Lakers boss Phil Jackson was fined for speaking out about the Game 4 officiating.

“Every player in my locker room is frustrated, from guards to big guys. Gasol goes after at least 20 jump shots, 20 shots to the rim and gets one foul; our big guys have 16. Nene has six fouls, three or four of them don’t exist.”

It remains to be seen whether Karl's comments will have any effect, but the Nuggets certainly can't afford to have Chauncey Billups and Nene in early foul trouble again on Friday.

    Facing elimination

The Lakers failed to close out the Rockets on the road in Game 6 last round.

Road teams are just 4-5 straight up in series clinchers prior to Game 7 in the playoffs to date.

Throw in the fact that the Nuggets are 40-9 SU at home this season, including 7-1 in the playoffs, and you have to like their chances of forcing a seventh game.

The question is - can they cover the number?

Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Reds: Johnny Cueto (4-2, 2.37 ERA) went 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA in three starts against Milwaukee as a rookie last year. He's lasted at least seven innings in seven consecutive starts. Cincinnati will take a 13-8 road record into Miller Park to begin a seven-game trip. The Reds won the final four games of their nine-game homestand. "We came in here and took care of business," said Jay Bruce, a .333 hitter (18 for 54) with eight homers in 16 games against Milwaukee. "We'll go on the road on a roll with some momentum. We plan on coming back (home) in first place."

The Under is 11-2-1 in Cueto's last 14 road starts.
The Under is 10-2-2 in the Reds' last 14 games following an off day.

Key Injuries - 2B Brandon Phillips (thumb) is QUESTIONABLE.
3B Edwin Encarnacion (wrist) is on the 15-day DL.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Brewers (-110, O/U 8.5): Milwaukee has lost five of six while averaging 2.0 runs. Milwaukee is hitting .204 in the past six games and has homered once in that stretch. "There are absolutely no excuses when you go out and play - you go out and you lay it out there and your results are your results," manager Ken Macha told the team's official Web site. "(But) our travel and sleep (and) rest situations over these last nine games have been difficult." The Brewers are 22-9 when they hit a home run and 5-11 when they don't. Braden Looper (4-3, 4.47) is 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in two starts versus the Reds this season.

The Under is 20-6-2 in the Brewers' last 28 games following a loss.
The Brewers are 10-1 in their last 11 in game 1 of a series.

Key Injuries - 2B Rickie Weeks (wrist) is OUT for the season.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Hot Lines: Friday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Phildelphia Phillies (-162, 10)

The Philadelphia Phillies may find the cure to their home woes when the Washington Nationals visit this weekend.

The Phillies look to beat the Nationals for the fifth straight time Friday night when they open a three-game series.

Philadelphia (25-20) owns by far the best road record in the majors at 16-6, but has won only one of its first eight series at Citizens Bank Park. That lone victory came when it took two of three from Washington (13-33) April 27-29.

The Phillies lost two of three to Florida earlier this week, dropping Wednesday's finale 6-2 after going 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. They went 3 for 23 in the series.

"It seems like that's been the common theme at home," slugger Matt Stairs told the Phillies' official Web site. "We can't really figure it out."

That lack of production hasn't been a problem for the Phillies against the lowly Nationals, who were swept at home by Philadelphia in a four-game set May 15-17. The Phillies scored 33 runs, hit .327 and batted .411 (23 for 56) with runners in scoring position in that series.

Philadelphia is 7-2 against Washington this season, and the top third of its batting order has done plenty of damage. Chase Utley is batting .380 (10 for 26) with 11 runs scored and six RBIs against the Nationals, Jimmy Rollins is hitting .350 (14 for 40) with seven runs scored and Shane Victorino is 11 for 37 (.297) with eight runs scored and seven RBIs.

          Pick: Philadelphia -162

Atlanta Braves at Arizona Diamondbacks (+118, 9)

Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox has plenty of confidence in the pitcher he'll send to the mound to try to snap his club's losing streak. It's safe to say he's not quite as sold on his team's offense.

The Braves look to snap out of their funk at the plate and give Jair Jurrjens enough support to end their four-game losing streak Friday night when they continue a four-game road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Derek Lowe and Javier Vazquez have been solid additions to the front of Atlanta's revamped starting rotation, but the emergence of Jurrjens (4-2, 2.07 ERA) has been just as important. The 23-year-old right-hander is fourth in the majors in ERA and ranks near the top of the NL in opponents' batting average (.228) and innings pitched (61).

While Jurrjens arguably has been Atlanta's most effective starter early in 2009, he hasn't always gotten a lot of help from the Braves' bats. He held Toronto to two runs in six innings Sunday but got two runs of support or fewer for the fifth time in 10 starts. The Braves (23-24) went on to win that game 10-2, but Jurrjens didn't get the decision, and Cox took notice.

"I can't say enough about (Jurrjens)," Cox told the Braves' official Web site. "He was outstanding. He deserves better. We're not getting him many runs, that's for sure."

Jurrjens shrugged it off because the team won, but Atlanta's offensive inconsistencies have become more of a problem lately. The Braves, near the bottom of the majors with 4.23 runs per game, have totaled seven runs and batted .177 while dropping four straight games, one shy of their season high.

Atlanta had seven hits and eight strikeouts against Arizona starter Dan Haren in a 5-2 loss in the series opener Thursday night.

"You can say 'Well, we didn't hit the ball tonight,' but he was hard to hit at," Cox said of Haren. "A lot of teams wouldn't have hit him tonight at all."

The Diamondbacks (21-27) are barely ahead of the Braves with 4.27 runs per game, but they've been connecting lately, averaging 5.75 runs and batting .287 while splitting the first four games of their seven-game homestand.

          Pick: Under 9

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streaking

          Jair Jurrjens (Atlanta Braves)

The attention of the baseball world is focused on the pitching performances of Zack Greinke and Roy Halladay in the American League while over in the NL, Jair Jurrjens quietly develops into one of the best arms in the majors.

The Braves righty has an ERA just over 2.00 has allowed more than two earned runs just once in his 10 starts this season. Jurrjens' early efforts were spoiled by a lack of run support but now Atlanta's bats are backing him up, scoring 18 runs in his past two appearances. He boasts a 4-2 record despite going six or more innings deep in seven of his 2009 starts.

"I can't say enough about (Jurrjens)," manager Bobby Cox told reporters. "He was outstanding. He deserves better. We're not getting him many runs, that's for sure."

          Cliff Lee (Cleveland Indians)

After a bumpy start to the year, Cy Young winner Cliff Lee is beginning to look like his old self. The Indians lefty is just 2-3 in his past eight starts but has given up only 12 total runs in those 58 innings of work. In his most recent start, Lee allowed three runs in six innings but was dealt his third no decision of the season.

Run support has also plagued the Tribe's ace. Cleveland has provided under four runs per start for Lee, whose 3.04 ERA is the seventh-best in the American League.

"You see how guys handle situations like that," Lee told the media about the lack of production. "There is a right way to handle things. I just try to control what I can control. Everything else is pointless to worry about."

          Slumping

          Bradley Bergesen (Baltimore Orioles)

The Orioles young arm is finding life tough his first year in the bigs. Bergesen is winless since his April 21 debut and has allowed four earned runs in each of his last three starts. The rookie looked impressive to start his last game but fell apart in the middle innings versus the Nationals.

Bergesen doesn't have overwhelming stuff but that hasn't stopped him from going after batters. That recklessness has served up three home runs in his past three games and six total dingers in his seven starts this year.

          Debuting

          Tommy Hunter (Texas Rangers)

The Rangers are playing two Friday, forcing the club to call up pitcher Tommy Hunter from the minors after Matt Harrison was scratched due to a sore shoulder. The right hander pitched three games for Texas last season, going 0-2 with a disastrous 16.36 ERA.

Hunter is 1-2 with a 4.82 ERA in his four starts in Triple-A. His stay in the bigs will be brief. The Rangers are expected to send him back down after Friday's opener and call up a relief pitcher for the night game.

Baseball Odds: Lilly, Billingsley Square Off In Wrigley Matinee

Before taking a look at this week's Indy Car odds, players will see a pair of pitchers on the mound that will be as exciting as the race on Friday afternoon, when the Chicago Cubs host the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field in the second of a four-game weekend set. The Cubs should be favored at home, but they'll be sending their ace out against a pitcher that could be facing a suspension after this start.

Dodgers vs Cubs odds - Friday, May 29, 2:20 PM ET

Chad Billingsley (6-2, 2.82) is coming off his worst outing of the season, as he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits over six innings of a 10-7 loss to the Angels at home, striking out six with only a single walk. The 24-year-old righthander is off to a splendid start, but he can have some control problems as he is fifth in the National League in strikeouts, but also sixth in walks. On the road, Billingsley has been sharp with a 2-0 mark in four starts and a 1.63 ERA while holding the oppsition to a .188 average. In his four career outings against the Cubs, including a pair of starts, Billingsley is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA.

Ted Lilly (5-4, 3.77) gave up five runs for the third time this season in a 7-2 loss at San Diego, as he was tagged for eight hits over 6.1 innings. He must have been still upset by that game, because he was ejected for arguing a call in a game he wasn't even playing, a 6-1 wiin at Pittsburgh on Monday. After that, Lilly left the dugout and confronted the umpire, which will surely earn him a punishment. But until then, he'll get the call at Wrigley, where he is 3-1 in four starts with a 1.29 ERA. The 33-year-old southpaw is 2-0 in four games (three starts) against the Dodgers in his career with a 5.21 ERA.

Baseball odds should favor Chicago at home, and heading into Thursday's series opener, the two had split their last 10 meetings at Wrigley, and five have gone over the posted total. However, the Dodgers thumped the Cubs in last year's NLDS in Chicago, winning both games by a combined score of 17-5.

          SCOREBOARD

          Friday, May 29

San Diego at Colorado (9:10 p.m. EDT). The surging Padres will try for their 12th win in 13 games when they begin a three-game set against the slumping Rockies, who have lost five straight at home and fallen a season-low 10 games under .500.

          STARS

          Thursday

-Jason Varitek, Red Sox, hit two solo homers in Boston's 3-1 win over Minnesota.

-Dan Haren, Diamondbacks, tossed eight sparkling innings, yielding two runs and seven hits in Arizona's 5-2 victory over Atlanta.

-Victor Martinez, Indians, drove in both of Cleveland's runs in a 2-1 win over Tampa Bay.

-Josh Beckett, Red Sox, pitched seven sharp innings to lead Boston to a 3-1 victory over Minnesota.

-Randy Wolf, Dodgers, allowed one run and six hits in seven-plus innings to lead Los Angeles to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

-Luke Scott, Orioles, homered twice and had four RBIs in Baltimore's 5-1 win over Detroit.

ALL OF YOU ARE OUTTA HERE

The Twins and Red Sox had their managers and catchers ejected during separate arguments in the seventh inning of Boston's 3-1 victory Thursday. Minnesota catcher Mike Redmond was tossed by 32-year-old umpire Todd Tichenor, up from the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, for disputing a play at the plate. Manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected, too. In the bottom half, catcher Jason Varitek and manager Terry Francona of the Red Sox were kicked out after Tichenor called a close pitch from Josh Beckett a ball.

          PUNISHED

Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano was suspended for six games by Major League Baseball, a day after his tirade during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Zambrano said he won't appeal the penalty, which included a fine. Barring rainouts, he is eligible to return next Thursday and start that night at Atlanta. Zambrano threw a baseball into left field, slammed his glove against the dugout fence and took a bat to a drink dispenser after he was ejected Wednesday.

NOT A BAD START AT ALL

Nolan Reimold homered again in the Baltimore Orioles' 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The rookie has connected in three straight games and has five in 14 games since being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on May 14.

          SPEAKING

"Maybe next time we come in, we'll have some candles and holy water. I have no good explanation for this.'' - Rays manager Joe Maddon after his team lost its 17th consecutive game in Cleveland, the longest road losing streak against one team in club history. The Indians won 2-1 Thursday to complete a four-game sweep of the defending American League champions.

          SEASONS

          May 29

1916 - Christy Mathewson defeated the Boston Braves 3-0 for the New York Giants' 17th consecutive road win.

1922 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled organized baseball was primarily a sport and not a business, and therefore not subject to antitrust laws and interstate commerce regulations.

1956 - Dale Long went hitless for the Pirates, ending his major league record streak of home runs in eight consecutive games. The Brooklyn Dodgers beat Pittsburgh, 10-1.

1965 - Philadelphia's Richie Allen hit a 529-foot home run over the roof of Connie Mack Stadium off Chicago's Larry Jackson in the Phillies' 4-2 victory.

1976 - Houston's Joe Niekro was the winning pitcher and hit a home run off his brother, Phil. The Astros beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1. It was the only home run hit by Joe in his 22-year major league career.

1990 - Oakland's Rickey Henderson broke Ty Cobb's 62-year-old American League stolen base record, but the Toronto Blue Jays still beat the Athletics 2-1. Henderson's 893rd steal came in the sixth inning.

2000 - Oakland second baseman Randy Velarde turned the 10th unassisted triple play in regular-season history during a 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees. With runners on first and second in motion, Shane Spencer hit a line drive to Velarde, who caught the ball, tagged out Jorge Posada (running from first) and stepped on second to beat Tino Martinez.

2002 - Roger Clemens recorded the 100th double-digit strikeout game of his career, fanning 11 in seven innings against Chicago. Nolan Ryan (215) and Randy Johnson (175) were the others to have 100 double-digit strikeout games.

Today's birthdays: Cha Seung Baek 29; Jerry Hairston Jr. 33; Trever Miller 36.

          This Day in Baseball

On May 29 in Baseball History...

1976 - The only home run of Joe Niekro's 22-year career comes at the expense of brother Phil as the Astros tie the Braves in the seventh, then win 4-3.

1989 - Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt, 39, retires. He is seventh on the all-time home run list with 548, but was hitting just .203 this season before making his tearful farewell speech.

1990 - Rickey Henderson steals his 893rd career base in Oakland's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays, surpassing Ty Cobb as the A.L.'s all-time leader. Lou Brock's mark of 938 is next.

1992 - Tim Raines of the White Sox swipes his 700th career base.

1993 - Jose Canseco, who three days earlier had a ball bounce off his head for a home run, pitches an inning in a blowout in Boston. The result? Besides the Rangers' 15-1 loss, Canseco winds up having to undergo season-ending elbow surgery from his ill-advised outing.

            Daily Sports Roundup

            Friday, May 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kobe Bryant and the Lakers try to finish off the Nuggets, and the Bronx Bombers head to Cleveland in search of some wins.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It's curtains for the Nuggets on Friday night if they can't get past the Lakers in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. Denver trails Los Angeles 3-2 in the best-of-seven third-round series after falling 103-94 on the road in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Bryant led the Lakers with a team-high 22 points in that win, while Lamar Odom contributed 19 points and 14 boards off the bench. Carmelo Anthony had a game-high 31 points on just 9-of-23 shooting for the Nuggets in the loss. Chauncey Billups and Kenyon Martin each put up 12 points Wednesday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be a battle of lefthanders in Cleveland on Friday night as Cliff Lee and the Indians host Andy Pettitte and the Yankees. Lee (2-5, 3.04 ERA) has given up three or fewer earned runs in each of his last eight outings, but his team is just 2-6 in those contests. Pettitte (4-1, 4.30 ERA), has given up four or more earned runs in four of his past five outings, but the Yankees have compiled a 4-1 record.

Also on the AL schedule for Friday: Boston at Toronto, Minnesota at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at Kansas City, Seattle at the Angels, and Oakland at Texas (in a doubleheader). As well, the Tigers and Orioles will continue their series down in Baltimore, with the O's expected to debut their top prospect, catcher Matt Wieters. Dontrelle Willis (1-1, 3.57 ERA) heads to the hill for Detroit Friday night.

Over in the National League on Friday things will get underway early with a 2:20pm ET game between the Dodgers and Cubs in Chicago. Chad Billingsley (6-2, 2.82 ERA) is expected to get the start for Los Angeles in that contest; the lefthander gave up five runs (four earned) over six innings in a loss to the Angels last time out. Chicago will send lefthander Ted Lilly (5-4, 3.77 ERA) to the mound.

Rounding out the Senior Circuit slate for Friday: Houston at Pittsburgh, Washington at Philadelphia, Florida at the Mets, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, Atlanta at Arizona, and St. Louis at San Francisco. The Giants will turn to Matt Cain for that west-coast matchup; the righthander is 5-1 with a solid 2.40 ERA on the season, and his team is 4-0 in his last four outings.

              Six-pack for Friday

-- Michigan, Ohio State will no longer print sports media guides- it is expected to save each school $250,000 a year.

-- NBA has 13 referees who are 54+ years old. Not good.

-- Toronto just finished an 0-9 road trip where

-- Atlanta Braves got shut out in both of Kris Medlen's first two major league starts-- it only gets easier from here.

-- The centerfield scoreboard at Chase Field in Phoenix cost $14M.

-- OK, two players, no names-- Here are their 2009 stats. Which one of these two would you vote to put on the All-Star team?

              Player A-- .297 BA, 7 HR, 22 RBI, 30 R, .372 OB%
              Player B-- .291 BA, 5 HR, 29 RBI, 41 R, .403 OB%
If you care about defense, Player B is considered to be better.

              ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13.......

              13) Cubs 23-23-- Get feeling Soriano isn't so popular in Chicago.....

              12) Angels 24-22-- Getting healthier, still favored to win AL West.

              11) Giants 23-23-- Starting pitching is the most important thing.

              10) Reds 26-20-- Play lot better on the road than at Great American.

              9) Mets 26-20-- Boy, they've got awful lot of injured players......

              8) Phillies 25-20-- Myers' injury could become a major problem.

              7) Tigers 26-19-- Young Porcello's rapid rise to majors sign of times.

              6) Brewers 27-20-- Will they trade for Jake Peavy in July?

              5) Rangers 27-19-- Harrison has bad arm; will be interesting to see if their pitchers hold up under Nolan Ryan's directive that pitchers are to go deeper into games.

              4) Red Sox 28-20-- Ortiz now batting sixth; team struggling on road.

              3) Cardinals 28-19-- St Louis paper concerned that they won't add to roster in July, that their early success clouds fact that this team still has lot of flaws.

              2) Bronx 27-20-- Teixeira has turned into Lou Gehrig since A-Rod is active; there are only five AL teams whose record is 4+ games over .500, and freefalling Toronto is one of those.

              1) Dodgers 33-15-- Martin still hasn't hit a home run this season.

                Len’s Top Five

                Friday, May 29

                Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone here's my Top 5 for May 29, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                1. Quick Hits

LeBron James was sensational (37 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists) as Cleveland beat Orlando 112-102. The Cavs still trail 3 games to 2.

Possibly setting the record for longest time between news conferences, Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady spoke to the media for the first time since knee surgery saying: ""I feel as good as I can possibly feel."

The NCAA is investigating the Memphis basketball program. Somebody reportedly took the SAT for star player Derrick Rose. You mean they actually cheat in college sports?

                2. Goodnight Jay

After 17 years, good guy Jay Leno does his last Tonight Show tonight. One of my career hilites was appearing as a guest (sitting next to Diane Lane) in July of 2005. My Spanning the World bloopers were well received, and Jay asked me what I'd do if I were commissioner for a day? I said I'd make sure there were a few reasonably priced seats available for every game so that families could actually go to the ballpark. The audience broke into applause. I had struck a nerve. Four years later, it's worse than ever.

                3. When ya Gotta Go

Now I've heard it all. There's a website RunPee.com that advises movie (and bathroom) goers when there's a dead spot in a movie, so they can make a mad dash to the john and not miss much. They think it might work in sports. You could get an alert when there's going to be a TV timeout, for example. Of course if everyone is on the website, the lines will be ridiculous. Hey, maybe your nearest bathroom can send out an email. "One empty stall, no waiting."

                4. Friday Mailbag

The New York ballparks continues to draw ire: From subscriber Rich: "When I asked my 12 year old nephew if he liked the new Yankee Stadium he replied, 'No I don't. It appears to be a baseball field surrounded by a shopping ****.' "
                Editor's Note: Smart kid.

My comments that Michael Vick should now be free to do whatever he wants with his life drew heavy fire. From D.S. "Torturing, killing, maiming and disabling hundreds if not thousands of helpless animals in pursuit of blood sport money is not just any old crime.... it was sufficiently heinous to warrant a permanent ban from the NFL."
Editor's Note: I fear I'm now a permanent resident of this subscriber's doghouse.

On the flip side, subscriber J.H. writes: "Regarding Michael Vick – I AGREE!! At least he did time for his transgressions unlike many of our overpaid, underperforming juiced-up baseball players!"

As for the "female friendly" Dodgers broadcasts that will inform and educate, several men wondered what about us? Male subscriber K.F. wrote: " When announcers talk about split-T formations or nickel-backs or other arcana, I wonder where I was when everyone else was being
                taught what that stuff meant."
Editor's Note: Maybe we've hit on something.

And the joke that keeps on giving. When I mentioned a horse named "Bodacious Tatas," a rabbi wrote: "Perhaps you can keep us 'abreast' about this!!!" W.W. responded: "Let's hope that after that comment, the rabbi's job doesn't go bust."

                5. Genius of the Week

A German man shot himself in his "manhood" (that's what newspaper articles called it) when the gun in his pocket accidentally went off. According to reports, and I'm not making this up, the "gun was half-cocked." Plaxico Burress would be proud.

Today's Birthday: 4 time Indy 500 winner Al Unser, Sr. 70.
Bonus Birthday: Actress Annette Bening. 51.
Bob Hope and JFK were also born on this date.

Today in Sports: The first Indy 500 was run. 1911.
Bonus Event: An airplane raced a train from Albany to New York City, and surprise surprise... the plane won.
